The pandemic’s toll on the global tourism industry continues, our go-to airline in Mexico – Interjet – has ceased operations to stave off bankruptcy but expects to resume operations in 2022. For the most up-to-date flight information we start our search  here .

How to Get a Cuba Visa (Tourist Card)

Visitors to Cuba from pretty much every country in the world will need a visa to visit Cuba.

Known as officially as a “Tourist Visa Card” there are two types of Cuba Visas – a green tourist card and a pink tourist card.

A pink tourist card applies to anyone flying to Cuba from the United States and it costs over $100.

The good news for travellers flying from Cancun to Cuba is you only need a green visa which costs much less.

There are two ways to get a Cuba visa in Mexico:

1. Buy an Interjet Tourist Card for Cuba at the Airport

You can purchase a Cuba visa at the airport from the Airline customer service counter.

The price is around 250 mxp ($13) which is the cheapest Cuba visa around.

That said, the thought of being denied entry to Cuba because things have changed, or simply because Mexican authorities don’t have enough forms on the day worried me.

So, I called our airline Interjet to inquire about whether we could buy a Cuba Visa from the airport in Mexico City ahead of time.

We were told we couldn’t do this but we were reassured it would be no problem at all buying a visa from Interjet at check-in in Cancun.

Fast forward 2 weeks and we found ourselves without a visa as we arrived to check-in to our flight. As we approached the line an Interjet staff member asked (in English) for our Cuba Visa.

When we said we didn’t’ have one he whipped out one which we could purchase for 400 MXP or $25 USD (cash only).

He then took our passports and wrote in our information which is great because it’s  his problem if he writes the information incorrectly and needs to start again.

So we can tell you first-hand as of February 2020, it’s perfectly safe to buy an Interjet Cuba Visa at Cancun Airport.

2. Buy Cuba Visa Online

If you think buying a Cuba visa at the airport seems risky – we share(d) your thoughts.

The cheapest way to get a Cuba visa is from this agent .

You simply enter your details into the form and they will send you a Visa within 1 business day.

Note this only applies for visitors (including US citizens) travelling from Mexico.

If you’re travelling from a US airport you will need to obtain a pink tourist card from a Cuban embassy .

Essential Information for Visiting Havana

Entry Requirements include the aforementioned Tourist Card, which allows you to stay in the Cuba for 30 days and is valid for only a single entry.

You will also need to have:

  • A passport valid for 2 months beyond the length of your proposed visit.
  • Proof of a confirmed return flight and booked accommodation.
  • Proof of accommodation for at least the 1st night in Cuba.
  • Travel insurance which covers medical expenses.

Remember, June is the rainiest month in Cuba – so be sure to pack the umbrella! Read about the best time to visit Cuba .

Here’s a fun fact about flying into Cuba: shortly before landing cabin stewards walk down the aisle to spray bug spray into the air to decontaminate the plane before landing.

This aircraft disinfection” is a stipulation of the World Health Organization for inbound aircraft to Cuba.

It won’t hurt and won’t kill you, so don’t be alarmed. At least now you know what they’re doing and why.

Havana Airport to Havana City

After arriving in Havana Airport and passing through immigration, head straight our the doors and turn left. Ignore all the touts offering you

About 100 metres away you will see a rank of yellow taxis which are the official taxis in Havana. Before jumping in a taxi make sure to agree on the fare because meters are not usually used.

A taxi from Havana Airport to Havana centro costs between 25 – 30 CUC (pesos cubano convertible) which is roughly $25 – 30 USD. The drive from the airport to Havana is about 30 minutes.

We paid $30 cuc for a maxi-taxi for four people to Vedado which is a suburb 10 minutes drive from Havana Vieja (aka Old Town).

For the return journey from Havana Old Town to Havana Airport we paid $20 cuc. Next time we visit Havana, if there’s just the two of us we’ll try to negotiate $20 cuc for a taxi to the center of town.

These are the best hotels near Cancun Airport with a free airport shuttle:

Courtyard by Marriott Cancun Airport : The closest hotel to Cancun Airport. Restaurant & Gym. Free shuttle to it’s beach club.

Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott : Second closest hotel to Cancun Airport. Restaurant & Gym.

Things to do in Cuba

Visiting Havana was the highlight of our time in Cuba. Walking the old town feels like you’ve fallen into a time machine set to 1940s. It’s amazing.

A few bucket list activities you can’t miss (which we’ve taken from our list of the 50 best things to do in Havana ) are:

  • take a city tour in a classic American car (preferably a pink convertible)
  • sip a Mojito or Cuba Libre in one of the famous hotels frequented by stars of the 40s including Frank Sinatra, Errol Flynn, and the writer whose now famous for drinking at bars from Paris to Havana to Key West: Ernest Hemingway
  • take a day trip to Vinales where you can ride horseback and roll a Cuban cigar

Riding in a pink vintage car around Havana Old Town is an essential activity on every Cuba itinerary

Where to Stay when you get to Cuba?

There are not many hotels in Cuba and the ones that are there are run by the government.

If you choose not to stay at one of these hotels, your other option is to stay in a Casa Particular aka someone’s apartment.

While this is a fun and very local experience, for Western comforts we would recommend booking one of the few hotels in Cuba, especially if it is your first time visiting:

  • Hotel National De Cuba – a clean and comfortable 5 star hotel in Havana
  • Hotel Plaza – a beautiful 4 star hotel in Havana Cuba
  • Hotel Carribean – a budget, air conditioned hotel in Havana

Read our guide for to get the run down on the best neighborhoods in Havana plus tried and tested hotels where the wifi actually works.

Yes this means wifi in Casa Particulars rarely works, no matter what the Airbnb reviews say based on our personal experience after spending hours trying to find a good Airbnb with wifi.

This is so helpful! Thank you! Do you happen to know if US passport holders flying from CUN-HAV qualify for the green tourist card? I am planning a trip for December and would love to know if I can get the visa I need in Mexico or if my US passport will require a pink card.

Thanks again! Happy travels :)

Hi there, thanks for the great information here. I’m wondering if you know a way to currently book airfare from Cancun to Havana. Since we are in the United States, none of the booking sites will allow me to book this leg of the trip because of “regulatory reasons.” I’m willing to book the tickets once we are in Cancun, but of course worry about not being able to get such a last minute flight. Any info would be great. Thank you!

Cancun to Cuba: This You Need to Know!

Cancun is a beautiful tourist destination on the tip of Mexico and the clear waters of the Gulf. Cuba is a historic and charming country with a vintage flair, just a short distance to the east. Could Cuba be the perfect day trip during my Cancun vacation? Can I travel to Cuba from Cancun?

Traveling from Cancun to Cuba for a day trip or part of a longer vacation is possible, but travel options between the two are limited. Planning is helpful but not necessary. Trips to Cuba from Cancun can be booked last minute with the required documentation.

Below we explore how to mix a bit of vintage Cuban flair into our next Mexican resort vacation as we learn the best way to travel from Cancun to Cuba.

Cancun to Cuba

How far is Cuba from Cancun?

The distance between Cancun and Cuba can be measured in a few different ways. From shore to shore at the closest point, the distance from Cancun to Cuba would be just over around 120 miles. This is longer than Cuba’s 90-mile proximity to the island of Key West in Florida.

By boat, the distance will increase to 250 miles and almost 10 hours in travel time. The mileage from Cancun to Havana is measured as 585 miles. Despite the increase in distance, the travel time is shorter, taking only one hour and twenty minutes. Flying is the only current travel option.

Can you see Cuba from Cancun?

There is an old saying that on a clear night, you can see the flickering lights of Cuba from the beaches of Cancun. This may sound beautiful, but it just isn’t true. The two may be a close distance together in millage, and it is much too far for the human eye to see lights across the Gulf.

A few issues prevent someone in Cancun from seeing the lights of Cuba. The curve of the Earth plays a big role in how far a human eye can see. Even from the tallest building in Cancun, it would not be enough for our eyes to spot Cuba in the distance.

Ferry Boats from Cancun to Cuba

Traveling to Cuba from Cancun by boat seems like it should be a short, easy trip. The truth is there are no currently available ferries traveling to Cuba from Cancun. The distance between the two coasts is too great for most boats to complete the ten-hour trip on one tank of fuel.

Cruises and day trips from Cancun to Cuba were available at one time. Cancun Plus offered a day trip to Ocho Rios, Cuba, but currently, it’s temporarily out of service. There are available cruise lines that stop in both Mexico and Cuba, but these are part of a larger itinerary package.

Flying from Cancun to Cuba

Flying is the only current travel option available from Cancun to Cuba. With a short travel time of one hour and thirty minutes and round-trip flights to Havana, Varadero, and Holguin, Cancun has become a hotspot for travel into Cuba. Trips can be planned in advance or at the airport.

Airlines such as Copa Airlines, Avianca, VivaAerobus, and American Airlines offer round-trip daily flights between Cancun and Havana. Flight prices can range from a few hundred to over a thousand. Check with Skyscanner for the latest prices and flight availability.

What to know about the flight

Most flights from Cancun are to Jose Marti International in Havana. It is possible to fly into Frank Pais in Holguin or Juan Gualberto in Varadero when traveling to Cuba. You will need a passport with at least two blank pages that will be valid for 6 months past your travel date to enter Cuba.

You will also need a Cuba Visa before traveling. Cuba visas are relatively inexpensive when traveling from Cancun and easily attainable online here or at the airport before you travel. To obtain the visa at the airport, you will need a passport, health insurance, and your travel tickets.

Can Americans travel to Cuba from Cancun?

There are no restrictions to prevent Americans from traveling to Cuba from Cancun. Some Americans have found it cost-effective to travel to Mexico before traveling to Cuba. Charges for tourist visas in Cancun can be significantly less for Americans than if purchased in the US.

Americans traveling to Cuba are still required to possess their passport, travel visa, and fall under one of the 12 categories required to travel.

Air Travel and COVID-19

Some airlines may have certain policies in place due to the COVID-19 virus. It is important to check with the airlines to get the latest updates on travel restrictions at airports, on airplanes, and at your final destination due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Airlines also may offer flexibility with cancellations due to the COVID-19 virus. Check online while booking your tickets or contact the airline directly to find out their policies on ticket cancellations and travel plan changes due to COVID-19 infections or outbreaks.

Swimming from Cancun to Cuba

With what seems to be such a short distance between the two destinations, it is not probable for the average tourist to swim in the shark-infested waters to visit Cuba. The feat, however, has already been accomplished.

Read more about the sharks here: Does Cancun Have Sharks?

Susie Maroney is an Australian swimmer and contestant on the 6th season of Survivor. She managed to swim the 122-mile distance on June 1, 1998, in just under 39 hours without flippers.

Traveling to Cuba from Cancun, as a one-day trip or for a longer vacation is only possible with air travel. There are no ferries currently operating between the two destinations. The short flight time and multiple destinations in Cuba would still make flying the most practical option.

Flight prices can vary, making booking your trip in advance helpful but unnecessary. With a valid passport and insurance, you can book the trip and obtain the required permit at the airport on the way to your destination in Cuba. Happy Travels!

Hummingbird at anchor off Cienfuegos, where classic Chevy is still an everyday form of transport

“If someone has to go to prison, I volunteer,” said new first mate, Neal, with a grin as we sat on Hummingbird in Cancun discussing our upcoming Cuba expedition. “Really?” I asked incredulously.

“It’s a life experience, isn’t it? I’ve never been to prison,” he replied. Neal is not short on life experience: from being headmaster of a school in Tanzania to summiting unclimbed mountains in east Greenland , he is quite the adventurer. A little brush with the Cuban authorities wasn’t going to cause him too much anxiety. I, on the other hand, was having last minute misgivings.

We’d been planning the Cuba trip for months: I’d joined every forum and Facebook group and dug up every contact I could find to research the current situation, but there was little information available. “Just don’t fall foul of any local rules or regulations,” was the scant advice we got.

I tried for the umpteenth time to get through to the Cuban authorities to triple check the arrival procedures, but to no avail. There appeared to be no requirement for pre-registration and everyone had their tourist cards already, so that was all we could do.

cruising-cuba-Hummingbird-yacht-cancun

Hummingbird set sail for Cuba from Cancun

It’s an upwind slog from the lovely marina on Isla Mujeres, Cancun, to Cuba with the easterly trades blowing consistently. After filling the boat with food we watched the weather for some northing in the wind and set off. On port tack with the Gulf Stream on the leeward bow shunting us northwards, we made due east for 120 miles across the Yucatán Channel.

We abandoned our original plan of making landfall at Los Morros, the Customs point on the western tip of Cuba, as the open roadstead needs settled weather, which meant sailing on to the next port of entry at Cayo Largo, 200 miles further east.

It was a shame to have to bypass much of the south coast, but I wasn’t going to make landfall somewhere other than a port of entry, even for a rest in an anchorage. I’m sure Neal is a man of his word, but I didn’t fancy testing his gaol offer. Cayo Largo turned out to be a good place to check in. An easy approach through a large gap in the reef and well-marked channel led to a decent marina.

The azure water and white sandy beaches were a welcome sight after the upwind passage and I had a struggle keeping the crew from jumping into the bay. The deputy marina manager Embellio met us on the pontoon. “Don’t go swimming”, he said with a smile. “There are crocodiles in the marina.” We weren’t sure if he was joking.

Soon the authorities arrived. The Guarda Frontera (Border control) checked our despacho from Mexico, issued us with an internal despacho for Cuba and stamped our tourist cards. You need permission to move from one port to another in Cuba, so over the next few weeks we’d become very familiar with their green uniforms.

The customs officer had a less conventional outfit: short skirt, fishnet tights and heels. She had a spaniel by her side, which jumped aboard. After various questions including how many mobile phones we carried and what type, our satellite phone was sealed in a bin bag with Cuban Customs tape around it. The spaniel took a good look around, decided we were smelly but innocent and departed. Finally the health officer took our temperatures while the agriculture officer inspected our provisions, sifting through our rice for weevils. We were given a clean bill of health and welcomed into the country. Phew!

Lines to Hawaii: a dream cruise chasing the Pacific surf from Tahiti to Honolulu

That night we ate at the marina bar, which served grilled fish, chicken and lobster while a local band serenaded us. The band was superb and it was very much the taste of things to come. As budding revolutionaries, we sang along and soon knew the lyrics off by heart.

Afterwards the waitress scraped the plates over the decking, straight into the open jaws of enormous tarpon fish below. They swallowed the chicken carcasses whole. We all stood transfixed when suddenly a scream went up: a crocodile had appeared on the scene. Embellio hadn’t been joking.

‘What’s the crocodile policy?’ Michelle, veteran of many Rubicon 3 expeditions, asked. I had to confess that although we have a procedure for everything from polar bear attack to man overboard, we didn’t have a crocodile policy. All I could offer was some advice from a friend who grew up in Zimbabwe: “You’ve got to stick your arm all the way into its throat. If you get your fist far enough down you’ll lock its jaws open and it won’t be able to swallow.”

In my professional opinion, things have probably gone a little too far by that stage. However I did discover that crocodiles are endangered and unlikely to be found in the places where you might swim, so I didn’t begrudge it the remains of my lobster.

Freedom to roam

Once checked in we had a little more freedom to roam. We were given permission to cruise the Jardines de la Reine, an extensive coral reef system further east. There are no permanent settlements, just coral, mangroves and perfect white beaches. The nearest town is 80 miles away so self-sufficiency is essential and we became heavily reliant on our watermaker. In four days’ cruising we saw only three yachts and a fleet of identical, grey fishing boats, which looked straight out of the USSR. We were all sheltering from a strong north easterly in Cayo Cuervo, a huge circular island with excellent shelter inside.

As soon as the wind dropped we set off for Cayo Algodon Grande. It was poorly charted so the dinghy went ahead and found a deep water channel into a mangrove-fringed lagoon. Once inside we had perfect solitude and set about exploring. The pilot guide mentioned a mile long dinghy channel to an abandoned holiday camp. Neal returned after an hour. “It’s more of a ditch than a channel,” he reported. It had clearly silted up since Nigel Calder was writing 20 years ago. There wasn’t much left of the resort, just a few lumps of concrete, but there was a beautiful windswept coral beach.

We made it ashore for sundowners and started ferrying everyone back to Hummingbird a little before sunset. It was a weird and wonderful spot, magical because there aren’t many places in the Caribbean that are getting wilder. The mosquitos were glad to see us according to Matt, Rod and Nick, who were in the last dinghy ride home.

From wilderness to civilisation

After five days cruising this desert island paradise we made for civilisation. The UNESCO world heritage site of Trinidad is just inshore of an approved yacht port, Casilda. The small marina couldn’t be raised on the VHF so we made straight for the commercial port. I employed my usual berthing tactic – seek forgiveness not permission – and tied alongside an official looking wharf.

It didn’t go down very well: “You’re in a military zone!” Barked an irate security guard, “Leave, now!” Juan, our Spanish speaker, tactfully apologised and with incredible charm asked how to proceed. We had to anchor in the bay and take the dinghy in to the shallow marina two miles away, where the Guarda would meet us.

Three hours later we were checked in and two taxis arrived to take us into town: an immaculate pink Chevy and a red Cadillac. Trinidad is a much-loved time warp with a well preserved old town, ochre-coloured buildings and cobbled streets.

We were hoping to pick up some supplies but our first taste of Cuban supermarkets lacked promise. Long shelves were stacked one row deep with a single brand of tinned tuna.

The next aisle was devoted entirely to bags of rice and beans. “Cornflakes?” I enquired, “No.” “Fruit?”. “No.” “Eggs?” “No”. I asked where to buy vegetables. “I just saw the guy with the tomatoes go past the window,” the shop assistant replied.

I hurried out after him, and so began a long day hunting barrow loads of vegetables in a warren of streets, not helped by the fact that Cuban streets all have two names: pre- and post-revolution.

Cienfuegos, our next stop, was a short sail further west, where we’d make a crew change. It is another colonial town with grand pastel-coloured buildings arranged around neat central squares. By sea it is accessed through a narrow entrance but the harbour opens up into a vast inland waterway, although much of it is off limits.

We were allowed alongside briefly at the marina to re-fuel and check in before anchoring off with the rest of the ‘transients’. The nightlife was fantastic – there were rooftop bars and an open dance school where salsa students (who ranged from 18 to 80) were dancing the night away.

cruising-cuba-Cienfuegos-bar-Hummingbird-yacht

Disaster struck the next day when the rubber flexi-coupling between our Perkins Perama M30 generator and the PTO shaft for the watermaker pump failed. I couldn’t find the spare on board. Cursing myself for being so stupid we ran through the options. “Life without the watermaker will be miserable,” pointed out Neal.

“Yeah,” I agreed, “there’s only one marina with a hosepipe between here and Havana.” In any other country you could probably ship a part from the UK but the embargoes would have made that very difficult. Our only hope was that there might be one here – but it was a long shot.

Engineering ingenuity

We explained the situation to a friendly engineer on one of the tourist boats. He took one look at the coupling and shook his head. “The last time I saw one of these was on an old Soviet water pump in a 1960s apartment block. It failed and we couldn’t get another one.” My heart sank.

“But I did fix it with some rubber strips, and it’s still working. I’ll try to get some of that special rubber for you.”

“We’re planning to leave tomorrow morning…” I said. “Oh, I don’t think I can get it in time, not by tomorrow,” he said apologetically.

Reluctantly we decided to move on – the new crew were keen to escape the city heat and explore the islands. Besides, there was no guarantee we’d fix the coupling if we stayed. So we limited fresh water use to drinking and set off on the second leg of our trip: westwards to Havana.

cruising-cuba-trinidad-artwork-che-guevara

In Cuba, you’re never far from the image of Che Guevara

Knowing the scarcity of supplies in Cuba, Neal offered the marina manager some of our old alternator belts and asked if they’d like them for their boats. “For the boats?” she exclaimed. “No, no, no, I’ll take them home, my husband might finally be able to fix our washing machine!”

After checking in to Cayo Largo again we continued to Cayo Rosario, an uninhabited island with fine white sand and a sheltered anchorage through a gap in the reef. It was quite windy and although the echosounder gave some indication of the isolated coral heads below we couldn’t see them clearly due to the disturbed water.

We dropped the anchor in what looked like a clear patch, but when the chain abruptly pulled tight we knew we’d hooked one. Yorkshireman Ian jumped in with a snorkel: “You’ve got to unwind the chain by circling around it clockwise,” he said pointing to its position. To our relief it worked first time and he scouted out a clear patch of sand for take two.

While the crew explored ashore I thought about our predicament. We had a perfectly functioning watermaker and a perfectly functioning generator. Cubans wouldn’t wait for a supply ship; there probably wouldn’t be one.

They’d find a way around the problem with what they had to hand. I ransacked the repair box, eventually bolting some webbing to the flanges, realising that the webbing needed to be taut in the direction the shaft turns in order to minimise the shock-load as it started spinning. On the third attempt it worked! The webbing withstood an hour of running and looked like it would take more. With any luck we’d have enough webbing left to replace it every few days and make it to Havana without water rationing.

Out-of-the-way places

We continued westwards, exploring some of the coastline we’d bypassed on the way from Mexico. We had some fantastic downwind sailing in flat water in the lee of the islands underway to the Isla de la Juventud. Despite being Cuba’s biggest island it is also one of the least explored. The ‘marina’ is really just a shallow harbour that acts as a base for a dive centre.

It is 40 miles from the main town of Nuevo Gerona, but well worth the trip. We arrived on a Sunday when the town was in full party mode, with every variety of rum you could think of, a hog roast on every corner and families socialising in the streets. It was a very happy affair.

On leaving Juventud we’d hoped to visit the Cayos to the west before rounding Cabo de San Antonio and heading up to Havana. Unfortunately it was too windy and with no all-weather anchorages we pulled in to Maria La Gorda instead. The bottom was irregular and we were relieved to pick out one of the moorings in the moonlight. Ashore we discovered a small resort, a sandy beach (with pizzeria), dive school and great snorkelling.

For the final beat to Havana we had a choice: stay inshore for flat water but battle a one knot counter current, or head offshore to make use of the Gulf Stream but contend with the short seas of wind against tide conditions. There were a few longing glances at the Club Med cruise ship which floated past serenely, but there were also squeals of exhilaration as the boat rocketed on into the night.

At Hemingway Marina we were reintroduced to luxuries such as shore power, a walk ashore pontoon and showers with hot and cold running water (although you have to use a bucket to flush the loo). It is a vast, largely empty marina complex ten miles from the city.

Havana itself was a fitting place to end a remarkable month: it is a majestic, crumbling edifice to the rejection of capitalism. Cuba isn’t just another Caribbean island; it’s a completely different world where money can’t buy everything. In fact, it can’t buy very much but, as the Cubans are so quick to point out, everyone’s essential needs are cared for: despite the terrible condition of some of the housing, no-one is homeless, and although food supplies are basic, everyone is fed.

It left us wondering if we’d give up our material world for a simpler life, but in a way that’s why we go sailing. We have many things in common: self-sufficiency and an ability to live simply, taking care of what you’ve got and working with the environment rather than against it. And an appreciation of good rum. Perhaps the spirit of the revolution runs in sailors more strongly than most.

Is it possible to travel to Cuba from Cancun on ship/boat/ferry?

Question: I am going to a wedding in Cancun in August 2010 and wondering if there is a ship/boat/ferry to Havana from Cancun as a preference to flying and if so where I can get more information as I can’t seem to find same on the web?

Answer: Cuba’s strategic location makes it an ideal stop for Caribbean cruise routes, with Havana destined to become one of the most popular ports of call for cruise ships in the world. However, because of the U.S. blockade against the country and the fact that vessels calling at Cuban ports are prohibited from visiting the U.S. for six months, few cruise ships include Cuba. Nor can any U.S. company operate cruises to Cuba.

Until about five years ago, some dozen cruise ships were reported to call in Cuba, while others occasionally docked at the island’s ports. But from about 2005 on, numbers of cruise ships calling on Cuban ports decreased by about 90%.

Nonetheless, a few foreign cruise ships feature Cuba, principally Havana, on their itineraries. But of those that have been listed over the past ten years or so, it’s worth checking them out to find out if they’re still operating. You may well be able to find Cuba cruises if you have your heart set on one, but you may have to be flexible as to your departure point.

The website  www.cruisehavana.com purports to keep a current list of Cuba related cruises, but it’s not clear if the site still has links to its various pages.  Cruiseserver ( www.cruiseserver.net ) is a site that includes cruise reviews, cruise line profiles and cruise ratings and has been known to include passengers’ reviews of cruises to Cuba.

Below is a list of cruise ships that have included Cuba on their itineraries in the past decade. The list is not complete, nor is it possible to access all the websites from Cuba to find out if the different companies still include Cuba as a port of call. Perhaps from outside Cuba, you will be able to obtain more up-to-date information.

  • Apparently the only cruise line that still stops in Cuba is England’s  Fred Olsen Cruise Lines ( www.fredolsencruises.com or   www.fredolsencruises.co.uk ) with ports of call in Havana and Santiago de Cuba. In Mexico, its ports of call are Cabo San Lucas, Costa Maya, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.
  • Spain’s  Festival Cruises ( www.festivalcruises.com ) began operating cruises in 2001, with Havana as the mother port.
  • British  Sun Cruises ( www.suncruises.co.uk ) has had calls in Havana and Santiago de Cuba.
  • Germany’s  Aida Cruises ( www.aida.de ) has occasionally featured Havana.
  • In early 2003,  Caribic Cruises ( www.caribicstar.com ) included Santiago de Cuba.
  • The Riviera One, formerly sailing from Cancún, initiated service from Jamaica and included calls in Havana and Isla de la Juventud.
  • West Indies Cruises formerly included Havana, and  Sea Cloud Cruises formerly included Cuba in its 2003 programs. However, CruiseHavana says that the  West Indies Cruises’ ship, Valtur Prima, is currently not offering cruises to Cuba.
  • Pullmann cruises used to have a cruise from Havana sailing to the Mayan Peninsula port of Cancun / Cozumel, but it was apparently bought out by a Miami-based American company a couple of years ago. As well, it appears that the Cancun-Havana cruise went out of business because it was not profitable.
  • In early 2008, the cruise ship Vistamar stopped in Havana on its way down to Peru.

Some specialist travel agents may be able to provide information about what cruise ships currently call at Cuban ports. There are no scheduled ferry services to Cuba.

As to cruise terminals in Cuba, there are plans to eventually expand the existing terminal along the waterfront of Habana Vieja. Cruise ship terminals also exist in Santiago de Cuba and on Isla de la Juventud, with plans to open a fourth passenger-ship terminal in Cienfuegos.

The question was about a mode of transportation from point A to point B. Was did the reply only involve cruises? I am sure there are Mexicans who travel to Cuba for business or pleasure and use that route.

There are several daily flights to and from Cancun to Havana on Cubana Airlines and Mexicana Airlines.

Hi, I am going on honeymoon to Cancun next August but would love to include Cuba as part of the trip. Do you know if there is any way to get between the two at the moment, even a small flight. It might only be for a couple of days but I would really like to see Cuba.

Thanks, Steve

Thanks for the interesting piece. Now the rest of the story:

The Cuban government pulled the plug on Festival / Pullman calls to Havana port. The cruise ships didn’t generate the expected revenue from accommodation, etc in state owned hotels and other enterprises. Hence the authority to enter Cuba’s ports was withdrawn. Communist or otherwise, Castro’s state does understand revenue. It is aggressively greedy in maximizing proceeds from foreign visitors.

When questions are asked, it is ALWAYS the fault of the US embargo.

hello friends of havana times we have been reading your articles since the beginning. thank you, very interesting. the issue on the cruise ships to havana is of great interest since our company CUBA REAL TOURS, a swiss owned and havana based touroperator, is presently organising the shore excursions of three cruise ships. last week came from hapag lloyd the number one cruise ship in the world the MS EUROPE. this week we have also from hapag lloyd the MS COLUMBUS and as of Dec. 31sth we do have the SEACLOUD II – one of the biggest sailing ship calling several ports in this country. there was also the LE LEVANT yacht of the french company ponant in cuba just these days, although this ship was handled by someone else. we do have the intention to bring in more cruise ships in the future but with the restrictions given, they have to be owned by non american companies and observe the 6 months rule of not returning to a US port after visiting cuba. kind regards,

CUBA REAL TOURS
