Srinagar in Two Days – How to Plan and Where to Stay

Srinagar

When I reached Srinagar and got out of the shared taxi a man approached me and asked to stay in his houseboat. He started to regard me as his sister.

I had food along with his fam ily – elder brother, a wife, a son, and a daughter.

Kashmiris treat tourists with respect! Below, you will find all the details regarding Srinagar and how you can spend your two days here, including accommodation, budget, itinerary, and places you can visit.

Accommodation

Shangri La House Boat – 9906629903

There are many accommodation options in Srinagar. You can stay in a hotel or in a hostel as well since Zostel has now opened in Srinagar. I personally prefer staying in a houseboat and especially in Shangrilla House Boat! I haven’t met such a kind family! In them I trust! They took care of me like their little sister and I am truly thankful for it! Further, their rooms, washroom, and amenities are perfect and hygienic! They also serve home cooked food and have a separate dining area where you can sit and enjoy Dal Lake while munching your food.

Cost: In the off-season, the cost of one room is INR 1,500 while during the peak season (mostly in May and June) the cost goes up to INR 3,000. This also includes all the meals as well (lunch, dinner and breakfast).

Contact: You can contact them on 9906629903 (Wahid) or 9831183948 (Ajaz) for bookings.

Best Time to Travel to Srinagar

Srinagar is a gem of a place and can be visited in any season or month. Of course, the winter months are extremely cold. So cold that at times Dal Lake freezes as well. I visited Srinagar in the month of September which I feel was the best month because it was not too cold and mostly pleasant. So if you are not very fond of the colder season visit Srinagar between April to October.

How to Reach Srinagar

Srinagar can be reached either directly from Delhi or you can also break the journey in between at Jammu. The roads between Jammu and Srinagar are properly constructed.

Delhi to Srinagar

There is no way to book this bus online, however, there are buses that leave from Sarai Ala Khan of Delhi that drops you off directly to Srinagar’s TRC bus stand. The cost of a Sleeper non AC bus is INR 1,500 while the Volvo costs about INR 2,000. You can find the prices here in the link – JKSRTC Bus .

Note that, if you plan to get down in the middle of your journey, you still would have to pay the full amount which is INR 1,500 or INR 2,000.

Delhi to Jammu to Srinagar

Overnight journey on a bus can easily be done to Jammu. You can book the bus online or catch a bus directly from Majnu ka Tilla or RK Ashram. The cost of the bus is about INR 1,000/-

From Jammu, you can catch another bus or a shared taxi that runs regularly to Srinagar. The shared taxi usually charges about INR 1,000 and takes about 10-12 hours to reach Srinagar. You can book a shared taxi on the go, however, if you want to travel more economically you can book a bus as well instead. JKSRTC buses run daily and have a fixed time of departure. You can find the prices here in the link – JKSRTC Bus .

The closest train station to Srinagar is Jammu. You can take a train to Jammu and then a bus or a shared taxi till Srinagar. The train will take about 10-13 hours to reach Jammu. Then from Jammu, buses are infrequent and have fixed timings of departure. However, you can get a shared taxi easily. It takes about 10-12 hours to reach from Jammu to Srinagar’s TRC area.

Don’t forget to book the train well in advance on www.irctc.co.in since the seat fills up fast.

Srinagar has an airport and is connected to all the big cities in India. If you book well in advance the difference of cost between a flight to and fro from Srinagar and bus to and fro from Delhi is not huge. The cost comes down to almost the same as both the modes of transport. So I think taking a flight to Srinagar is your best bet until you are planning it at the end minute.

Note that, when you are leaving Srinagar and have a flight from here, ensure that you reach the airport a little early because the checking here is stricter as compared to the other airports of India.

From Airport to TRC

There are several shared taxis that operate between Airport and various places of Srinagar. The charge is very nominal of INR 100/-. In fact, if you want to reach the airport, then you can take an airport shuttle that runs from TRC. There are 3 airport shuttles – 9 AM, 10 AM and 11 AM and takes INR 90/-.

2 Days Itinerary

If you are taking a flight directly to Srinagar, you can leave from your respective place early in the morning and reach Srinagar by 10 AM. From the airport, there are regular buses, private taxis or shared taxis (that costs INR 100/-) that runs to all the corners of Srinagar. The ride to ghats from where you will take a shikara for your houseboat will take about an hour. Rest, get freshen up and enjoy the shikara ride today to the places as mentioned below –

Char Chinar

Seen as an island in Dal Lake, the corners are decorated with Chinar trees (Maple trees). The reflection of these trees in Dal Lake is so mesmerizing. In fact, you can take your snacks or lunch here and enjoy a meal sitting on this small island as I did. Plus, if you are visiting this place during the month of October (basically winters), you will see the red colour trees sparkling in Dal Lake. Google it and you will know what I mean 🙂

From Char China, move towards Dargah. In between, you will cross several beautiful gardens and reflections of other houses and trees. Hazratbal Shrine is a heaven on Earth. It is so peaceful with such glorious vibes. Women are not allowed to enter, however, even from outside the white marble has something spectacular speaking out and you stand there in awe marveling the glory of its structure. In fact, nearby you can stroll around the market and eat street food (especially for non-vegetarians). I am a vegetarian so I bought their sweet halva wrapped inside a roti and walked around the nearby garden savoring the moment.

TIP:   Ladies, do not forget to carry dupatta to this place and cover your heads even if you are strolling in the market. It Marks a sign of respect among the community.

Nigeen Lake

A eutrophic lake that is connected to Dal Lake through a narrow strait. This lake is so full of greenery due to grass and algae that you feel you have entered a whole new world! In fact, many tourists prefer staying here as well because of the calm and serenity as compared to Dal Lake. It can be easily reached by shikara once you turn from Dargah. You can also reach this lake directly from the ghats itself.

After the shikara ride, you can spend your afternoon having lunch or snacks at Chai Jai. Chai Jai is a really authentic cafe and one should not miss this place. The vibe of the cafe is really tremendous and we spend the evening while playing jenga over a cup of tea. You can have snacks here – from pizza to shakes, this place offers everything. Not only the food, but even the interiors of this place is also commendable.

Strolling Through the Market

From Chai Jai, move out to the streets to explore the market area. You can shop and buy Kashmiri dresses here. The lane is full of such shops and has European vibes during the sunset time.

Start today early to get the best of the Vegetable Market. You can also go for some Kashmir Tour Packages on this day for a seamless experience.

Vegetable Market

Today, start the day early at 5 AM. This is because the Vegetable Market happens only early in the morning for an hour. We left on shikara from the house boat itself early in the morning. Here you can buy seeds of various plants and see shikaras strolling from one corner to another selling vegetables. The early morning hues and chirping of the birds add a peaceful essence to the entire scene. It is something one should not miss in Srinagar.

After the vegetable market, come back to the house boat, have breakfast, freshen up and leave for the roadside adventures. Pari Mahal cannot be reached with the help of a shikara. You have to hire a cab to reach here but the place is worth every penny. From here, you will be able to see the entire stretch of Srinagar along with the beautiful Dal Lake. This place is an abode to fairies.

Shankaracharya Temple

This temple is the highest point in Srinagar and can be seen from the farthest off the location. Half of the journey needs to be commenced on foot to reach this temple. A bus or a taxi can drop you off midway. Note that, cameras are not allowed here but you can capture the beauty of Srinagar by going a further down on the roadside.

What to Wear and Things to Carry

I really wanted a local touch and be as involved in the culture as possible. Hence decided to wear ethnic. The colour of the suits was perfectly blending with the subtle colours of Dal Lake and I felt comfortable as well. Of course, if you will see the tourists, you will as well see them in shorts. So its up to you what you chose.

For men, it is simple, isn’t it? But maybe try wearing kurta for a day to blend in the culture.  TIP:  In Nehru Park (which is near Shangri La house boat), you can also get yourself clicked in the local Kashmiri suits and dresses.

I am also listing down some key things that you should not miss while in Srinagar –

  • Identity Proof –  It is always better to keep an identity proof with you all the time. It is not because something might happen or due to something I faced. Srinagar is heavily guarded and you will notice this as soon as you enter here. At every road and every corner, you will see policemen. And I was told at times they do ask for identity proofs just for a simple check
  • Postpaid Sim Card –  In Kashmir, the local sim of your city won’t work, especially the prepaid sims. Please have a postpaid sim ready before leaving for Kashmir (More on that below)
  • A Sweater or Warm Clothes –  Even if you are planning to travel to Kashmir during summers, do carry a sweater despite the weather. Early mornings and nights gets colder and if you are going to the Vegetable Market or riding in a shikara, you will feel very cold due to the cool breeze from the Dal Lake

If you are going to Ladakh after Srinagar read our Ladakh guide here – Leh Ladakh Itinerary

For Leh Ladakh Packages check this out – Leh Ladakh Tour Packages

Connectivity in Srinagar

In Srinagar, prepaid sim cards do not work, unless the prepaid sims are bought from Kashmir itself. So it is better to carry postpaid sims along with you while travelling to Srinagar.

I bargained from a local who was ready to give me a sim card for 10 days for INR 100/-. Otherwise, you can also go to a mobile store in Srinagar to get a sim for yourself.

Note , Jio has a network in Kashmir in case you have Jio postpaid sim.

Typical Cost for Two Days Stay in Kashmir

Transportation to and fro from srinagar.

You can easily commute from Delhi to Srinagar and back within INR 3,000 to INR 4,000. In fact if you book in advance you can easily get flights (including return) for INR 4,000.

Stay in Shangri La House Boat

Shangri La House boat during the off-season costs INR 1,500 and in the season it costs INR 3,000. This costs also includes food.

Alternatively, if you are travelling on a budget you can also check out the hotels on www.booking.com or Zostel.

Shikara Ride

A full day Shikara ride will cost about INR 1,000 to INR 1,500. In this ride, you would be able to cover most of the places like Dargah, Char Chinar and Nigeen Lake.

One can only reach Pari Mahal and Shankaracharya Temple by taking a cab which again would cost INR 1,200. To visit Shankaracharya Temple you can also take a bus that goes halfway to the temple and rest half way you can cover on foot.

Chai Jai would cost about INR 300-400 for a full meal. If you stay in Shangri La house boat, the cost of your food is covered in INR 1,500/INR 3,000 itself. However, you can easily go to the market and have meals for INR 200.

Hope this was helpful! Kashmir has my heart but if you have any questions, please drop a comment below! Enjoy Srinagar!

Places to Visit in Srinagar and Things to Do

Places to Visit in Srinagar and Things to Do

When you talk about places to visit in Srinagar city, the list can really be a long one. From beautiful gardens to gorgeous lakes, vibrant markets to places of religious significance, colorful Shikaras to snow-capped mountains, Srinagar has them all.

Most of the tourists visiting Kashmir rush towards places like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. Not a lot of them want to spend time in Srinagar. A common notion is that it is just another city and there isn’t much to see here which is not true at all.

If you are visiting Kashmir and skipping Srinagar, you are really missing a lot. It is not just a base to explore Kashmir but rather a place that deserves to be explored, a place of both natural and man-made beauty.

In this list, I will provide detailed information on places to visit in Srinagar and things to do. For other details on visiting Kashmir, including information like what to see, public transport, where to stay, mobile connectivity, itinerary planning, taxi rates, etc., please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Kashmir – A Complete Travel Guide .

Tourist Places to Visit in Srinagar and Things to Do

In the post below, I will provide a complete list of places to visit in Srinagar City and tourist activities that you can enjoy. How many of these are you able to cover will entirely depend on the time you have in hand.

In my opinion, you should plan your trip in a way that you are spending at least 2 days in the city itself. That is how you will properly be able to explore it.

Dal Lake is popularly known as ‘Srinagar’s Jewel’ or ‘Jewel in the crown of Kashmir’. Covering an area of 18 square kilometers, this is the second-largest lake in Kashmir. Over a period of time, has become the very symbol of the city and the valley.

A trip to Srinagar is definitely incomplete without spending some time at this beautiful lake. If you wish to, you can also rent a houseboat and stay a night on the lake itself.

The best time to visit Dal Lake in my opinion is during sunset. The drama in the sky that unfolds every evening as the sun goes down is truly a sight to behold. Take a look at Sunset at Dal Lake to see what I mean.

The pictures I posted in the post above were all taken on different days. You can see how the sight is different but beautiful every evening.

Places to Visit in Srinagar and Things to Do

  • Shalimar Bagh

Also known by the names of Faiz Baksh and Farah Baksh, this beautiful garden was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1616 for his wife Noor Jahan.

It has three terraces, fountains, and a canal that is connected to Dal Lake, for the purpose of watering the gardens. The Garden is considered the high point of Mughal horticulture and its beauty is unmatched in the Autumn and Spring seasons.

For more details, you can also take a look at Shalimar Bagh Entry Fee, Timings, and Trip Planning .

Places to Visit in Srinagar and Things to Do

  • Nishat Bagh

The name Nishat Bagh can mean ‘Garden of Joy’, ‘Garden of Gladness’ and “Garden of Delight”. It is the second-largest Mughal garden in Kashmir valley, located on the eastern side of Dal Lake.

Nishat Bagh was built in 1633 by Abdul Hasan Asaf Khan, brother of Nur Jahan and father of Mumtaz Mahal. It is a terraced garden that has around 12 terraces, fountains, flowerbeds, and huge lawns.

It is said that Shah Jahan was so impressed with the beauty of this garden that he hoped that his father-in-law would gift it to him. When this did not happen, the Mughal Emperor was so disappointed that he immediately closed the water supply to this garden leading the garden to be deserted.

He realized his mistake later and ordered full restoration rights for the supply of water to the garden to Asif Khan, his Prime Minister, and father-in-law.

Located on the bank of the Dal Lake and the Zabarwan Mountains as its backdrop, Nishat Bagh commands a magnificent view of the lake beneath the snow-capped Pir Panjal mountain range that stands far away to the west of the valley.

For more details, you can also take a look at Nishat Bagh Entry Fee, Timings, and Trip Planning .

Places to Visit in Srinagar and Things to Do

Pari Mahal Srinagar, also known as Peer Mahal, is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Kashmir. It is a seven-terraced Mughal garden that may not be the largest but definitely sits at the best location of them all. It is also one of the best points to view the sunset in Srinagar.

The name of the garden literally means the palace of fairies. It was built by Mughal Prince Dara Shikoh in 1650 as his personal library and residence. He is said to have lived here for several years and also used it as a place to learn astronomy.

Today, the garden sits on the slope of a mountain, overlooking the city of Srinagar and Dal Lake. It is beautifully built and maintained and is a great spot to spend some time in the evening.

The view of the setting sun that you get from Pari Mahal is really amazing which makes it a perfect spot for photography as well.

For more details, you can also take a look at How to Plan a Visit to Pari Mahal in Srinagar .

Places to Visit in Srinagar and Things to Do

Chashm-e-Shahi

The name of this garden is written in a few different ways. It is also spelled as Chashm-e-Shahi, Chashma-i-Shahi, or Cheshma Shahi. It was built in the year 1632 by governor Ali Mardan Khan, on the orders of Emperor Shah Jahan.

Shah Jahan intended this garden to be a gift to his favorite son, Dara Shikoh. A residence was also built for the prince near the garden and now is known as the Pari Mahal.

Hari Parbat fort was built in the 18 th century by an Afghan governor Atta Muhammad Khan and restored by Emperor Akbar in 1590. This fort is located on the west of Dal Lake. It hosts a famous Hindu temple, two shrines of locally venerated Muslim saints, and a Sikh Gurudwara.

  • Shankaracharya Temple

Overlooking the city of Srinagar, Shankaracharya temple sits at a height of 1,000 ft on a summit of the same name. The temple is also known as Jyeshteshwara Temple and Takht-e-Sulaiman. It is an ancient shrine, considered to be as old as 200 BCE.

We visited the temple during a recent trip to Kashmir. The road from Dal Lake to Shankaracharya temple is a 5 kilometers long uphill drive that starts near Dal Gate. For more details, you can take a look at Dal Lake to Shankaracharya temple .

The Hazratbal Shrine is a Muslim shrine located in Srinagar, on the banks of Dal Lake. Also known as, Dargah Sharif, it contains a relic, Moi-e-Muqqadas, which is widely believed to be the hair of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

The shrine is a place of high religious importance and also has quite a bit of history related to it. But other than that, it is also a very beautiful shrine that has also been gaining tourist attention in the last few years.

For more details, you can also take a look at How to Plan a Visit to Hazratbal in Srinagar . Below is a video of Hazratbal shrine that you can take a look at.

Char Chinar

This is actually a part of Dal Lake. Char Chinar consists of four chinar trees standing on a small island within Dal Lake. Most of the Shikara rides from the area near Ghat No. 23 will take you to Char Chinar.

It is a small park-like area now. You can take a break at Char Chinar, rest for a while, and can also get something to eat and drink there.

Challi Point

It is a popular tourist spot in Srinagar. Located right next to Dal Lake. It is more of a place where you can get a lot of street food. What makes the place worth it though is that it is located right next to Dal Lake and a great spot to spend some time in the evening.

Astanmarg is a viewpoint, a meadow on top of the Zabarwan range surrounded by a couple of small villages. You drive up the mountain on a steep and narrow road and reach a point where the road ends, leaving you with an amazing view of the entire Srinagar city and Dal Lake.

It is located at a distance of about 10 kilometers from Dal Lake. To know more details on how to reach there and the best time, please take a look at Astanmarg – The Best Viewpoint in Srinagar .

  • Floating Vegetable Market

The floating vegetable market of Srinagar is really an experience in itself. Also known as the floating flower market of Srinagar, this small market takes its form every morning on Dal Lake for about 60 minutes to 90 minutes only.

The location of market is in a small village on the lake near Dal Gate. You will have to rent a Shikara to get to the market and it is only open in the early morning hours.

In the same area is the floating market of Srinagar that remains open all day, selling groceries and other day-to-day items. For more details, please take a look at How to Plan a Visit to the Floating Vegetable Market of Srinagar . Below is a video of the market that you can check out.

Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden

As the name suggests, this garden is famous for over 70 different varieties of colored tulip flowers. It is located approximately 8 kms from Srinagar. The only time it is worth visiting is actually in April when Tulips are in full blossom.

Pathar Masjid

Also known as Naev Masheed, this mosque was built by Mughal Empress Noor Jehan, the wife of emperor Jehangir. It is famous for its distinct construction like no traditional pyramidal roof, with nine mihrabs (arches), the central one being larger than the others.

Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Botanical Garden

Also known only as the Botanical garden, it is another beautiful garden located on the same road that goes towards Chasm-e-Shahi and Pari Mahal. You can cover it either while going to Pari Mahal or on your way back.

Nigeen Lake

Nigeen Lake is situated right next to Dal Lake and is often called ‘Jewel in the Ring’. There is a small causeway separating both these lakes but it is also sometimes considered a part of Dal Lake itself.

The actual name of this beautiful water body is actually Nageena, given because of the surrounding large number of willow and poplar trees. ‘Nigeen’ is a local variant of the ‘Nageena’.

Houseboats are available in Nigeen Lake as well. Some tourists actually prefer to rent a houseboat in Nigeen lake because it is less crowded than Dal Lake and quieter. Shikara rides are however mostly available in Dal Lake only.

Places to Visit in Srinagar and Things to Do

Things to Do in Srinagar City

Other than sightseeing at all of the places listed above, mentioned below are a few other tourist activities that you can enjoy in the city.

Go for a Shikara Ride

This by far is the most popular tourist activity that everyone looks forward to. The best time to go for a Shikara ride will either be at the time of sunset or in the early morning hours to the vegetable and flower market.

See the Sound & Light Show

Sound and light show in Srinagar is something that not many tourists know of. It is a beautiful event organized every evening on the banks of Dal Lake and by far is one of the best such programs that I have ever attended.

If you are going to visit Kashmir anytime soon and had a day planned in Srinagar, I will highly recommend attending this show in the evening. It starts at around 8 pm, lasts for about 30 minutes, and is a perfect way to spend an evening on Dal Lake.

You can first go for a Shikara ride in the evening and then reach the open-theater-like area where this show is organized. For more details, please take a look at the Sound and Light Show in Srinagar City .

Stay at a Houseboat

If you have a couple of nights to spend in Srinagar, I will highly recommend staying in a houseboat for at least one night. It is really an amazing experience. The houseboats are very comfortable on the inside and you will really love the experience.

Most of the houseboats are lined up near Dal Gate but I will recommend choosing one that is in the open lake. Those are much quieter and offer a better view.

Paragliding

Paragliding is an adventure sport that has recently been introduced in Srinagar. Astanmarg is the point where the paragliding starts but you will have to book one in advance in Srinagar only. There is no readily available service at the paragliding point.

If you are in Srinagar, there is no way that you can skip the shopping part. The city is famous for its dry fruits, saffron, handicraft items, shawls, pashmina, woolens, and several other items that you will just love.

Places to Visit in Srinagar in 2 Days

Most tourists spend 2 days in Srinagar so let me lay out an example of a sightseeing itinerary that you can follow.

Start your Day 1 with a visit to Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh in the morning. After that, take a drive around Dal Lake and visit Hari Parbat fort. After that, return to your hotel for lunch.

Rest for a while and in the evening, go to Dal Lake again. Do a Shikara ride, then see the sound and the light show and spend some time at Challi point.

On Day 2, get up early in the morning and go to Dal Gate. Hire a Shikara and go for a ride to the vegetable market. From there, drive to Hazratbal Shrine. Drive back to Dal Gate again and visit the Shankaracharya temple.

In the evening, first, go to Chashm-e-Shahi garden. Then go to Pari Mahal and see the sunset from there. Return to your hotel after sunset.

Other Places to Visit in Srinagar

Mentioned below are some other places in Srinagar that you can visit if you had the time.

Manasbal Lake

Mansabal Lake is located at a distance of 30 km from Srinagar. This lake is a good place for bird watching as it is one of the largest natural stamping grounds for aquatic birds in Kashmir.

Though much smaller in size, the setting and surroundings of Mansabal Lake are very charming. It is not popular among tourists so hardly anyone goes this way. Most of the people you will find at Mansabal Lake will be the locals only.

Wular Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia and is considered the largest in India. It drains water from the Jhelum river and there is a lot of wildlife in and around this lake.

It is home to several species of birds which is because of the fact that it is located near the Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary. Several species of fish like Rosy Barb, Common Carp, and mosquito fish are found in this lake.

Another interesting thing is that the size of this lake depends on the season and can vary from 30 sq. km to 260 sq. km.

Please note that Wular Lake is not located within the city of Srinagar. It is at a distance of about 65 km from the city, on the way to Bandipora.

Built on the banks of River Jhelum in 1586 by Emperor Akbar, it is a popular camping site among tourists. The garden sits on the west side of Dal, overlooking the beautiful lake.

Chinar Bagh

Recently developed by the Tourism Department, this park is known for its musical fountains and holding an open theater. Several tourist activities like a campfire, fishing, and swimming competitions are also arranged here.

Harwan Gardens

Located about 15 kms from Srinagar, it is another one of the most beautiful gardens in Kashmir valley.

Badamwari Garden

Not many people have heard this name. This small quiet garden is situated on the banks of Nigeen lake and is named after Almond trees, planted by the ruling king at that time. The garden was revived by the JK Bank and formally thrown open to the public in 2008.

Dachigam Wildlife Sanctuary

A permit is required to enter this wildlife sanctuary. It is home to a variety of wildlife and is a popular tourist spot. It is located near the Shalimar area in Srinagar.

Sri Pratap Singh Museum

It is a historical place famous for several ancient artifacts as old as the 3 rd and 4 th centuries.

Literally meaning “place of birth”, it is an archaeological site from where artifacts as old as 5000 years ago were recovered. Animal. Human skeletons of the Neolithic era have also been collected from this site.

Parihaspore

Located 22 kms from Srinagar, these are ruins of an ancient town built in 700 AD and served as the capital of Kashmir.

Khanqah-e-Moula

Popularly known as just Khanqah, it is the first mosque in Kashmir. It was built in 1395 by Sultan Sikander in honor of Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, who popularized Islam in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Situated on the right bank of the river Jhelum, it is famous for its wooden structure which has a covered roof and hanging bells.

Kheer Bhawani Temple

Located about 20 kms from Srinagar, it is a beautiful temple of Goddess Bhawani.

Jamia Masjid

This mosque was built in 1394 and destroyed and restored several times since then. It is one of the oldest mosques in Srinagar.

Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi

Located in the Rainawari area of Srinagar, it is a sacred site famous for a Gurudwara built by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.

The Roza Bal, Rouza Bal, or Rozabal is a shrine located in the downtown area of Srinagar. What makes it famous though is that several people believe it to be the burial site of Jesus Christ himself, a claim that is of course highly disputed.

Madin Sahib

It is an ancient mosque famous for its unique and rare tile work that is not seen in any other monument in the Indian sub-continent.

Dastgeer Sahib

This shrine was built in 1806 and is known for an old Quran written by Hazrat Abu Bakr Sidiqqi, Hazrat Ali, and the Mouia Pak, a piece of hair from Gous E Azam.

Makhdum Sahib

It is an ancient mosque built in the name of Sufi Saint Makhdum Sahib or Hazrat Sultan.

Masjid of Akhund Mullah

Considered a mosque within a mosque, it is a small mosque located close to Maskhdum Sahib Mosque. It is known for its stone lotus on top of the podium and a specially constructed prayer chamber.

Imambara Hassanabad

It is another ancient mosque in the region known for its distinct Indo-Iranian construction style. It was built in 1857 in the shape of an octagon with five entry points for women worshipers.

Khanqah of Khwaja Moinuddin Naqshbandi

Popularly known as just Naqshband Shrine, this mosque is known for being the place where the hair of Prophet Muhammad was kept before getting moved to the Hazratbal Mosque.

The places I listed above are just a few of the ancient and historical sites located in the city. I am sure there are many that I have missed here. You can probably spend a week just exploring these historical sites.

Me and wife going to Ladakh by self drive car . In between want to explore Kashmir in last week of April. Please guide should I book complete Srinagar trip hotel and cab by agent or book only hotel and use my own car or hire a driver for Kashmir trip. Will go Ladakh by own car of course self driving.

It will depend on how long you want to spend in Kashmir, Mr. Arora. In my opinion, if you are traveling in your own car, you do not have to book a cab or a tour. Just prepare an itinerary and explore those places on the way.

I am planning to go kashmir in 1st week of may with my wife…pls advise me that is this time is safe to go kashmir…

Hi Vivek – As of now it is safe but things change overnight in Kashmir so a bit hard to predict right now. Keep a close watch on the news and if things remain the way they are right now, you can definitely visit there.

' src=

Hello. I will be traveling to Srinagar on 25th April. I was hoping if you could help me and tell me if it would be safe to travel to Srinagar. I will be traveling to Srinagar via Jammu.

Thanks, Farheen

Hello Farheen – No it is not safe to travel as of now. Let the elections pass and then plan a trip. Please do not go as of now, situation is tensed up there.

' src=

Thanks Vargis When would be a good time to go ??

Give it another month Pasir, I would advise in January if it is snow that you are after. Srinagar is already way too cold so if that bothers you and you are not hoping to catch some snow, then you will have to wait until March – April.

May I know if it is safe to go Srinagar and Kashmir in December 2016 in this unrest situation.

It is not really an ideal time to go right now

Let's indulge into the city's top 5 soul-stirring attractions revealing distinctive Srinagar allure.

1. Dal Lake: Srinagar's Beating Aquatic Heart

Famed universally as the crown jewel amid Srinagar's many prized assets, alluring Dal Lake magnetises visitors through its iconic brightly painted Shikaras beckoning romantic rides past floating lotus gardens and villages still thriving upon its serene waters as they have for centuries, providing breathtaking vistas round the seasons.

Partake iconic rides in its decorated boats gracing Bollywood movies for decades, wander jewellery stalls in lively floating markets, glimpse interesting lake life paddling past kingfisher birds perched on half-sunken logs before finding Himalayan repose in beautifully ornate heritage houseboats with X o names still docked majestically over tucked away calm corners promising once-in-lifetime memorable stays afloat!

Top tip: Visit during Jan-Feb to feast eyes on snow-capped peaks getting reflected from icy blue waters.

2. Mughal Gardens of Srinagar: Historical Landscaping Excellence

From vast green terraces to delicately carved fountains, Kashmir's famed ornate Mughal Gardens masterpieces spanning Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi beautifully translate imperial courtyard aesthetics seamlessly upon lush slopes cascading gradually in geometric harmony towards scenic Dal lake's glittering expanse beyond.

Marvel at the Far East induced central water channel architectures lined by vibrant rows of flowers in full bloom, explore hidden royal pavilions still retaining faded fresco traces, and immerse your senses completely soaking eternally alluring fragrances and idyllic views promising tantalising tranquillity few landscapes can match.

Don't miss buying fragrant Kashmiri saffron and apple crates as souvenirs!

Top tip: Early spring blooms coupled with panoramic snow views make visit timing magical.

3. Shankaracharya Temple: Divine Hilltop Haven

Towering imperiously above Srinagar's proud skyline punctuated by majestic Chinars lies ancient Shankaracharya shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva overlooking entire lush valley literally at the peak point dedicatedly once to spiritual philosopher Adi Shankaracharya during 8th century though present architecture dates few centuries beyond too.

Climb steep well paved pathways by pony or walk past rings of prayer beads and bells through towering fortified entrances to reach inner sanctum entirely constructed from solid grey stones signifying timeless resilience showcasing earliest prominent mandir architecture still intact.

Don't miss panoramas at sunset!

Insider tip: Visit during the annual Shivratri festival for maximum spiritual high.

4. Hazratbal Shrine: Sacred Relic Infusing Syncretic Harmony

Fusing Hindu temple pagoda facade with Islamic interiors lies the dazzling Hazratbal Shrine glistening like a pearl by the scenic Dal banks enshrining the holiest relic- Moi-e-Muqaddas - believed by faithful locally to be a hair belonging to Prophet Mohammed himself.

Join devotees inside the gleaming white marble interiors offering chadar shawls respectfully, glimpse intricate Khatamband ceiling crafted by Persian artists once or just find silent solace in the magical ambience exuded when mid-day rays illuminate the central chamber housing the prized relic under bulletproof glass case emanating spiritual bliss spanning religions and geographies for centuries now.

Don't miss attending special night prayers!

5. Pari Mahal: Where History Meets Natural Allure

Across famed Chashme Shahi Mughal gardens lies the ethereal Pari Mahal palace construction started intriguingly in mid-16th century as an astronomical observatory later used briefly as a seminary college too before negligence and eventually restored beautifully into terraced architecture continuing its legacy still by University of Kashmir.

Walk past historic steps and gorgeous bloom beds onto arched stone observatory remnants still facing skywards while soaking picture postcard views over Srinagar city and distant snow peaks for making it today both atmospheric hangout rendezvous and history lessons rolled in one!

Watching sun set colours transform it into a majestic vision.

Lose yourself wandering silk carpeted houseboat lounges or narrow lanes where kebabs sizzle softly beside handloom shops hawking vibrant phirans tunics, sip soulfully fragrant noon chai across golden hay fields framed by mist veiled mountains, stroll happily savouring kahwa tea and stories by ancient chinar trees before finding divine solitude finally as twilight prayers resonate movingly from shrines standing strong since bygone beautiful eras.

As Srinagar reveals timeless treasures at every step patiently to persistent admirers who come seeking with an open heart!
