What people love about Peru Tours

It’s been very good all around. Thank you ?
I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Leonard Ms. Roxiana(Lima), Mr. Daniel(Inca), Mr. Percy( Cusco), Mr. Alex (rainbow mountain) and all the drivers for orchestrating such a flawless trip. This journey has been unlike any other I've experienced, thanks to the impeccable execution and attention to detail provided by both of you. Your daily updates and prompt responses truly set the standard for customer service. Each of our tour guides was a consummate professional, ensuring our well-being and going above and beyond to accommodate any anything we encountered or wanted to explore. This trip has truly been worth every penny spent. From the moment of our arrival to our departure, we were impeccably cared for. Thank you once again for an unforgettable experience!
My husband and I traveled with Kantu Tours back in March for our honeymoon. Waldir and all tour guides that they paired us with were amazing. All tour guides were knowledgable, all hotels we stayed at were close to the town centers and clean. One thing to be mindful of for this tour is it is a lot more walking and hiking than you may think. Rainbow mountain and Lake Humanty are steep hikes on uneven gravel. We are from Florida so we were worried about elevation sickness but took elevation sickness meds and also drank or chewed coca leaves any time offered or in the morning and never got sick. Peru is absolutely beautiful and all locals are very nice from our experience. I would highly recommend Kantu Tours to anyone wanting to visit Peru.

Kantu Peru Tours

"The tour was excellent and the guides were amazing . I would not recommend to do two long 15-16 days back to back . Some individuals on our tour group had the lake and Mountain tours days separated with shorter days in between giving them time to rest . Where as our tour , we were not given the option . I would highly recommend this tour and will use this tour agency again in the future but will Analyze the itinerary in detail prior to sending in deposit .

Waman Adventures

"We enjoyed the 10 day trip, seeing everything we hoped to see, but it was a packed on schedule and quite demanding. It is definitely a tour made for seeing everything, but never relaxing other than the boat ride on Titicaca. The various independent tours and transfers that made up this tour were well coordinated. Wilbert, who led the Machu Picchu leg of the tour, was the best of the guides, with his insights, historical knowledge and the photos and videos he took for each member of the touring group. The Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain trips were to spectacular locations but very physically demanding beyond what we were aware of when reading the tour program. Also, on the Rainbow Mountain tour, we were given walking sticks. One of our walking sticks must have fallen off when we took a motor bike back down the mountain and we asked to pay 300 Peruvian solos to replace it, which was pretty disappointing as the circumstances causing this were beyond our control. But overall we enjoyed the entire tour.

Peru - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca city in the Andes of Peru

You might only know about Machu Picchu , but the fabled city is just the beginning. Peru was once home to a thriving pre-Columbian civilization that dominated the region before the Spanish. The Incas were responsible for creating some of the most beautiful archaeological wonders, combining striking architecture on the land of great natural beauty. To this day, Peru retains its alluring and enchanting features that were carved by the ancient Incas.

Tour Highlights

  • Hike the Inca Trail , or its other famous alternative routes like the Lares Trek or Salkantey Trek .
  • Visit Machu Pichhu
  • Go sandboarding in the Peruvian desert
  • Look for macaws in the Amazon jungle
  • Explore the deep canyons of Colca
  • Visit the floating islands of Lake Titicaca
  • Trek the Cordillera Blanca, the highest range of the Peruvian Andes

Travel Tips

  • Machu Picchu can become very crowded during high season. Beat the crowds by staying nearer the site the night before your visit, and be sure to book your tickets ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
  • Stores often shut down for the afternoon siesta, so always plan your meals in advance.
  • It's advisable to not drink the tap water. Many hotels provide bottled water, which should also be used for brushing your teeth.
  • Altitude sickness can be a real issue for some people visiting Peru. Try combatting it with coca leaf tea, a Peruvian remedy that is readily available across the country. Chewing the leaves can have the same effect.
  • On a holiday to Peru, don't skip a visit to Lima . Peru's largest city is often overlooked for hotspot tourist destinations but is full of great food and interesting museums that you'll regret missing out on.
  • Always carry cash when travelling through Peru as many shops will not accept credit cards.

Peru has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Peru before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Peru, do check out our Peru Travel Guide for more information.

Tours in Peru - Questions and Answers

The best time to visit Peru is between the months of May and September. Corresponding with the dry season, temperatures in the country at this time hover between 16°C to 22°C. But more importantly, traveling to Peru during this time means that there is little fear of getting caught in the country’s torrential monsoon. Another less popular but still good time to visit Peru is between October and December. A shoulder period between dry and monsoon seasons, the climate during this time of year is generally fine, although skies are cloudier and you might have to dodge the odd shower. The wettest months are January and February. It is still possible to visit destinations such as Lake Titicaca during the rainy season, but the Inca Trail is closed for travelers. Find more information here .

Given its wealth of attractions, there are many reasons why you should consider Peru trips that last between ten days and two weeks . This will give you enough time to see top-rated sites, such as Manu National Park, while also discovering the country’s history and culture in more far-flung and as-yet-unknown destinations. You can still take in a number of attractions even if you can only spare one week in Peru , however, the time constraint would mean that you will have to limit your exploration to a destination or two. For a more detailed rundown, check out our travel guide on how many days to spend in Peru .

Personal contact is an important part of Peruvian culture. Not only do Peruvians tend to stand closer to each other than you might at home, but physical contact (especially on one’s arms and back) is also common. You should avoid the desire to step away, as this is considered offensive. Greetings are important, with handshakes along with a few words of greeting being common. Give the elderly your respect if you are young and leave your seat on public transportation for them.

If you live close to sea level, then you will realize what a significant effect higher elevations can have on your body upon arriving in Cusco. Doctors recommend at least two days of acclimatization before considering any strenuous activities, such as going for the popular two or four-day hikes to Machu Picchu. A nice way to spend this time would be by exploring the historic center of Lima or taking one of the many less-demanding day hikes that are available in the country. If you plan on trekking, you can read our article on the ultimate trekking guide in Peru .

You should ensure you are up to date with any vaccinations that are standard in your home country, such as those providing protection against tetanus and measles. A medical professional may suggest boosters for these vaccinations. Other diseases they may suggest vaccinations for are hepatitis B, diphtheria, and rabies, all of which are potentially deadly. Yellow fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, is a risk in the country’s east. There is a risk of malaria in the country’s northeast, around Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon. Since there is currently no vaccination against this disease, prophylactic drugs are recommended. Find more information here .

Peru is not expensive for travelers and we recommend it as a top pick for visitors on a budget . Most travelers can get by on USD 30 to USD 40 per day, including transport, accommodation, and food. Tackling the Inca Trail and exploring Machu Picchu are must-do attractions but also relatively costly. ATMs are the quickest way to withdraw neuvos soles, as the country’s currency is called, on the road and visa cards are easily accepted. Many ATMs have an English language option, too. They can be found in some airports, inside banks, and as stand-alone units in major towns and cities. If you are looking for other destinations to visit on a budget, find more information here .

Spanish is the most-spoken European language in Peru, alongside several local languages like Quechan and Aymara. Those involved in the tourism industry and those in popular destinations such as Lima and Cusco will speak some English, while guides leading tours for English-speaking travelers will have a good hold of the language. However, knowing a few words of Spanish is always useful.

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

The 4 Best Tour Companies in Peru

Three travelers hiking the Salkantay trek in Peru on a guided tour

Peru is one of the most popular destinations in South America, owing to the fact that it’s home to the bucket-list favorite and Wonder of the World Machu Picchu . Around 500,000 people visit the ancient Incan citadel each year — a number that would be much higher if it wasn’t for the mandates put in place to prevent overcrowding.

But there’s more to Peru than just Machu Picchu. And there’s more to the Andes than the Inca Trail.

Peru is very geographically and culturally diverse (it’s the third-largest country on the continent) so there’s a lot more on offer here than most travelers expect. From the great dining destination of Lima to the floating islands off the Uros to the Peruvian Amazon to the pyramids and tombs of Batán Grande to the desert oasis of Huacachina, there is so much to see in this South American nation that limiting yourself to the Sacred Valley would be a missed opportunity.

For the intrepid traveler with plenty of time, many of these destinations can be explored solo. However, getting around Peru can be challenging and budget travelers with limited time should consider opting for an organized tour. And there are plenty of reputable and affordable tour companies in Peru that can make your journey smoother, allowing you to focus your attention and energy on the sites, people, culture, and history of the place.

To help you save money and make the most of your time, I’ve put together a list of the best tour companies in Peru. From walking tours to multi-day excursions to adventure-laden guided tours, these tours might not be as cheap as traveling solo but they will absorb the headaches that often come with traveling in a foreign country (especially one as large and slow to navigate as Peru).

Here are the best tour companies in Peru:

1. Intrepid Travel

Intrepid runs tours in every corner of the planet and they’re always a solid choice thanks to their focus on sustainability and responsible travel. I’ve been on a few of their tours over the years and they never disappoint. And while Intrepid offers tours of Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail, they also emphasize the other parts of this beautiful country too.

Their Classic Peru tour ($2,053 USD), for example, spans 9 days and circles the country, covering many of the major highlights, including Machu Picchu, Cusco, and Lake Titicaca.

Intrepid is one of my go-to companies for multiday tours. Whenever I book a multi-day trip I go with them. You should to. I can’t recommend them enough!

Learn more about Intrepid Travel here!

2. Alpaca Expeditions

Hikers on an Alpaca tour in green shirts at Machu Picchu in Peru

There are also trekking tours to the seven lakes of Ausangate, and other spots around the Sacred Valley. Their classic four-day Inca Trail hike is $695 USD per person while their five-day Choquequirao trek is $650 USD.

Learn more about Alpaca Expeditions here!

3. Choquequirao Trek

A narrow staircase built into the mountainside along the Choquequirao trek in Peru

You can do the classic four-day trek to Choquequirao for $520 USD or you can mix things up and do a longer eight-day hike that goes from Choquequirao to Machu Picchu for $1,250 USD, or you can combine it with a jaunt on the Incan Trail. There are tons of affordable options!

Learn more about Choquequirao Trek here!

4. Colca Tours

Learn more about Colca Tours here!

Peru is such a geographically and culturally diverse place, it would take a lot of time, energy, and money to see it all on one trip — especially if you plan on hiking. If you’re short on time, consider a tour for some or all of your trip. After all, money returns; time does not.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Want to Travel for Free? Travel credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and accommodation — all without any extra spending. Check out my guide to picking the right card and my current favorites to get started and see the latest best deals.

Need Help Finding Activities for Your Trip? Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can find cool walking tours, fun excursions, skip-the-line tickets, private guides, and more.

The Best Inca Trail Tour Operators in Peru

TripSavvy / Chris VR

If you are beginning your search for an Inca Trail tour operator, this list is a good place to start. There are more than 150 licensed Inca Trail operators in Peru with new agencies springing up each year. This list includes some of the most well-established and reputable Peru-based companies. The agencies featured here also offer alternative treks to Machu Picchu as well as other treks and tours in the Sacred Valley.

The list takes a variety of recommendations into account including Machu Picchu tour companies that are featured regularly in the latest Peru travel guidebooks, review sites, travel forums, as well as some personal insight.

Explorandes

Since its foundation in 1975, Explorandes has received plaudits for both its commitment to responsible tourism as a Rainforest Alliance-certified tour operator and certification for its environmental management system.

Explorandes runs tours and treks throughout much of Peru including private departures and tailor-made tours. Its five-day/four-night Inca Trail trek departs on Sundays and Wednesdays. Although the trek can be done in four days, the tour company insists its pacing makes for a more enjoyable, less crowded trip.

Valencia Travel Cusco

Valencia Travel Cusco focuses on its quality of service, customized attention, and special deals, with treks and tours suited to both young adventure travelers and potentially less mobile baby boomers.

The trek chefs are miracle workers, the Quechua-speaking porters are well cared for, and the guides are dedicated and knowledgeable. Reassurance is a part of the package as each staff member from porters to guides to senior management has a genuine desire to see every trekker realize his or her dream of reaching Machu Picchu. You can choose from two-day to five-day Inca Trail treks.

Peru Treks specializes in the classic four-day/three-night Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu, a focus that has made it a consistently recommended operator. As well as frequent appearances in various Peru travel guides, the company has also received accolades from Peru’s Ministry of Tourism and honorable mentions in most major guides like Lonely Planet and Moon Handbooks. Peru Treks prides itself on porter welfare (all 250 of them), it's 20 bilingual Peruvian guides, and a large percentage of the profits made by Peru Treks goes toward community projects like schools for the local population.

Andina Travel

In 2001, a Cusco native with 20 years of experience in adventure tourism in Peru joined forces with his North American business partner to found Andina Travel. The company has been an authorized Inca Trail operator since 2002, while also running numerous alternative treks and tours to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and other destinations throughout Peru.

Andina Travel offers a two-day, four-day, and five-day trek on the Inca Trail. Also, the tour operator has “non-trekking soft adventures” through Cusco , the Sacred Valley, and on to Machu Picchu. Inca Trail prices are slightly higher than average, but Andina takes good care of its trekkers, as well as its guides and porters.

United Mice

Founded in 1987, United Mice has built a strong reputation over the years for trekking, horse riding, rafting, and jungle trips in southeastern Peru. You can expect plenty of local knowledge from the porters and guides, as well as no-nonsense trekking with good food and equipment. The company also donates one percent of its profits to a foundation helping street children in Cusco.

Llama Path is one of the later additions to the Cusco circuit, but the agency has built a big reputation since its foundation in 2004. It offers group and private treks to Machu Picchu, including a variety of Inca Trail alternatives. Groups contain a maximum of 16 people, but the average group size (according to the Llama Path website) is from eight to 10 people. Llama Path offers two- to five-day Inca Trail tours.

Enigma Adventure

Founded in Cusco in 2002, Enigma Adventure is an adventure travel and trekking specialist with one foot placed firmly in the luxury market. It's classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (four day/three night) is more expensive than many, but clients can expect a highly personalized experience, with a maximum of 12 people in each group (no minimum) and two guides for groups of more than eight people. Enigma also prides itself on the treatment of its guides and porters, as well as the quality of its food.

Q'ente has been operating in the Peruvian Andes since 1995, primarily as an adventure tour and trekking company. Trekkers can choose from five different Inca Trail excursions ranging from a short two-day/one- night option to the seven-day Salkantay Inca Trail. Q'ente also offers a wide range of alternative routes to Machu Picchu, as well as five- to 20-day package tours. Inca Trail group sizes range from two to 16 people.

Amazonas Explorer

With its five-day Inca Trail departures starting at over $1,600, Amazonas Explorer can put quite a dent in your travel budget . But if you’re looking for luxury, you’ll probably like the agency’s attitude, “We believe in the finer things in life and as our guests, we want your time with us to be as luxurious, relaxing, and enjoyable as possible.”

The five-day duration lends itself to a more relaxed trekking experience (many Inca Trail treks last for four days), while also giving you more time to explore Machu Picchu on the final day. Price includes a return from Machu Picchu to Cusco via the luxurious Vistadome train and private bus.

Do not let the no-frills website put you off; SAS Travel is a solid option with almost two decades of experience leading tours and treks in Cusco and Peru. The company prides itself on its responsible outlook, including a dedicated “leave no trace” tourism work ethic and concern for porter welfare.

SAS also has a reputation for providing its trekkers with above average food. Trek prices for the standard four-day/three-night Inca Trail trek are competitive with reliable daily departures.

More Inca Trail Companies to Consider

As noted earlier, there are plenty of Inca Trail operators out there, some good, some bad, some in-between. Here are some more companies with a generally positive reputation:

  • Alpaca Expeditions
  • Chaska Tours
  • Culturas Peru
  • Machete Tours
  • Naty's Travel
  • Peruvian Odyssey (luxury)
  • Sky Viajes Y Turismo
  • Sun Gate Tours
  • X-Treme Tourbulencia

best peru tour operators

Had a great trip with our guide Ray Herrera and driver Alfredo. Lots of good experiences in a short period of time 4 days. Learnt a lot not just about the main tourist destinations but Peru in general by Ray. Ray has a passion for Inca history and local produce. Ray knows all the good photo spots and we managed the sun out every day .. Good culture and if you want to get on a tour ask for Ray at Sams Travel = amazing

best peru tour operators

Ray was our Tour Guide and Alfredo was our driver for a 4 day tour we did with SAM Travel Peru. Ray's knowledge of the history of Cusco and Machu Picchu was outstanding. Ray was very accommodating with all our needs. He stayed alongside us when trekking and helped where he could. His sense of humour was pleasant to be around. Ray spoke very good English. He is such a nice guy. I would strongly recommend Ray to be your tour guide to visit Machu Picchu. Our 1 day tour thru the Sacred Vally with Danny was wonderful. He was very knowledgeable and able to answer all our questions in detail. I would recommend asking for him personally if you are able.

Wow. We had such an incredible experience in Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Our guide, Dayvit, is the most knowledgeable guide we have ever had. He has such an extensive knowledge of the history and is very friendly and helpful. If you are planning a trip to Peru, I highly recommend SAM travel and be sure to request Dayvit!

2 day tour sacred valley / Machu Picchu highly recommend! David was the best tour guide. He knows an incredible amount about Incan culture and is personable and funny. He also kept us up to date on a political situation happening when we were there and was informative. Overall, this tour checks all the boxes. Thank you!

We used SAM Travel for a 2D/1N trip from Cusco to Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu on Dec 25-26, 2022. The team was good with communication from the start - both Saul and Junior were very helpful and professional with answering any questions and clearing up any misunderstandings. Our guide, Miguel, was prompt, pleasant, and quite knowledgeable. We enjoyed his company and insight over the 2 day trip and recommend him to anyone booking with SAM Travel.

Powerful! This journey tests your humanity and leaves you in awe of yourself and the beauty that Pachamama provides. April 2024 We conquered the Inca trail and it was only made possible with the help and guidance from our expert guides Jean Pierre (JP) and Jimmy. The knowledge these gentlemen shared was admired by all of our group and the envy of other trail hikers who stopped to listen. The hike has many layers of challenges including language barriers, altitude sensitivities and food specifications. The team at Sam travel exceeded the needs and went above to ensure our comforts were met. A special mention must be made to Mario, the Chef who somehow performed magic with nutritious flavourful meals to satisfy even the pickiest consumers and Francesco who was our lead porter who orchestrated the harmony that happened behind the scenes to get everything done. Nothing less than marvellous from this team. Thank you to each of the group who made our trek a remarkable experience.

Jose and Henry were great guides for our first time exploring machu pichu! They were very attentive and kept everything on a smooth schedule. Highly recommend!

The whole experience was amazing. Ray, our guide answered all of our questions and definitely had our best interest in mind the whole time. Timothy the cook made fantastic food and somehow found a way to prepare a birthday cake with no notice! Boni our head porter and his whole crew were kind, accommodating, and had such upbeat attitudes which really made the experience great!

I spent two days with Sam Travel’s guide Raymier, who guided us through the one-day 12-km stretch of the Inca trail and then took us to Machu Picchu the next day. In my group, I was always the last one on the trail because I come from the coast and I’m not used to altitudes, and honestly I could also have prepared physically a little better. Raymier respected my pace, never rushed me, and supported me throughout the ardous trail. He had much knowledge to share. I speak Spanish, but ended up in an English tour, and Ray’s English was very good. He was funny, respectful, and versatile. He knew where to take all the best photos and patiently took photos of all of us. I would trust Sam Travel again especially if I was lucky enough to have Ray as a guide again.

Alpaca Expeditions 100% Peruvian Company

A lot of people ask us about the importance and meaning of being a local company and why are we feeling so proud about this feature. Cusco is the touristic city by excellence, almost of all the residents are involved in this industry in some way or another making it very important for their economy. This revolution caught the attention of a lot of businessmen all over the World and they started investing in Cusco due to the stock access they had and have.

Raul Ccolque Ccolque Alpaca Expeditions Owner

We can’t start to talk about our team without mentioning the founder first. The person who with an ideal and a lot of hard work started what Alpaca Expeditions is now. The owner and our proud boss, Raul Ccolque.

Raul Ccolque Ccolque , the owner and director of Alpaca Expeditions, was born in one small village near sacred valley. He was raised speaking quechua – the local language. His parents still live on his family farm coming into the city once a week to sell their vegetables. He studied his elementary and high school in the same village and when he graduated he went to the army as he always dreamed of being a police officer. Along the way, a friend from his village invited him to be a porter on the Inca Trail and he immediately changed his focus, falling in love with the sounds of the tourists – their language, their habits. He immediately enrolled in the University studying tourism and English while working as a porter at the Inca Trail. Once he graduated from University, he worked in a local company’s office for a bit and finally became a licensed tour guide. Working in all these different capacities in tourism and for several companies, he always felt the companies were too focused on money and less on people.

Who are the Alpaca Expedition's Green Machine

Alpaca Expeditions has been growing year by year, not only in number of clients, but also the number of employees. By the end of 2017, we were so happy to employ more than 300 people. Most of our staff works along the treks providing the best and safest experiences. Each one of them are part of the powerful Green Machine!

Alpaca Expeditions Guides

Our Porters

Our porters are known as the main gears of the “Green Machine” of the Inca trail . They will blow you away. They are the hardest working people in the company. They will carry all your belongings, all the food, tents – all logistical equipment. We thank them for this hard work by making sure they have the best treatment here in Cusco. All hiking gear including shoes, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and meals are provided free of charge from the company. We provide better wages than any company in Cusco so they can live from the wages and provide for their families. We are proud to say that we have at least 300 porters in total and they come from different villages from the Cusco region, such as Pisaq , Lares, Calca and Ollantaytambo.

Why is it Mandatory to have Porters on The Inca Trail

Before 1990, the Inca Trail was not regulated by the Peruvian government. Unfortunately many of these early hikers left a lot of trash along the way. The government took note of this problem and initiated a project to protect the trail. The Green Army All our porters are quechua language speakers who come from farming villages. Alpaca Expeditions will help them to keep growing their community, especially in education, health and culture. We have different ongoing projects and hope to add many more.

Alpaca Expeditions Goals

Every time we accomplish a goal, we can’t help trying to find new challenges and new ways to improve ourselves. But, as the beginning, we also keep our first goals as commandments.

  • Provide sustainable and informative tours of Macchu Picchu
  • Maintain the company as 100% locally owned
  • Educate about Incan culture and its history
  • Supporting our local community by giving back to our community
  • Offer a memorable and enjoyable trekking experience
  • Provide equitable services to the Green Army (our porters)

Alpaca Expeditions Values

  • Honesty and integrity
  • Clients become our friends
  • Commitment to the culture and society of the Andean world
  • Work as a team by sharing knowledge, experience and dedication

Our Vision

We offer quality and personalized tours, no matter the type. Those who choose to take a train to Machu Picchu are treated with the same dedication as those who spend days hiking through the mountains.

We are recognized as the leading tour agency and operator in the Cusco region, and one that contributes greatly to the development of the tourism sector.

Our Ambitions

Our Ambitions

We hope to build an entirely sustainable company that provides top-quality service to visitors, while at the same time, develop methods to provide children and families in the Cusco region with opportunities for education and support.

Hotel to Hotel service

Regarding the transportation provided by Alpaca Expeditions, we are committed to delivering a quality service. We strive to ensure that passengers feel supported throughout their journey. To achieve this, we coordinate closely with our guides and representatives to ensure timely pick-up at the start of their tours. Additionally, we have representatives responsible for escorting our passengers to their hotels at the conclusion of any tour.

hotel to hotel service

Our drivers are not only trained in customer service but also come properly uniformed, and many are fluent in English.

Typically, all transportation types are included in each of our services. For instance, if you have booked a trekking tour, we will pick you up early, typically between 4 AM and 5 AM. When visiting Cusco, it's important to note that traffic here is generally moderate. However, there are peak traffic times, such as between 7 AM and 8 AM, which coincide with school hours, and in the evening between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Therefore, if you have a flight during these times, it's crucial to be at the airport at least 2 hours in advance. The drivers of Alpaca Expeditions ensure their vehicles are prepared with all necessities before each service. They are acutely aware that delays can lead to missed trains, flights, or other connections. Consequently, they are always more than punctual, arriving at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time for any service, understanding the responsibility they carry in executing these tasks.

Personal Porter of 7KG

Remember that Alpaca Expeditions offers an extra 7 kg allowance for your personal belongings on any of our tours. We include a personal porter who is responsible for carrying your duffel bag without any additional fee. You will not have access to your duffel bag until you reach your evening campsite. The bag should not exceed 7 kg, which includes 4 kg for clothes and 3 kg for your sleeping bag and sleeping mat.

personal porter

Each Alpaca Expeditions porter is paid directly after each trek, allowing them to return home more quickly. They receive better wages than our competitors, health insurance, and all their equipment free of charge, including hiking boots, pants, jerseys, fleeces, jackets, hats, flashlights, sleeping bags, and high-quality food. We ensure each of our porters has a comfortable bed in a pleasant room to sleep in before and after each trek. We also visit the communities they live in, providing toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, and other necessary supplies to their families, along with books for their children.

This is just the beginning for us, and we are always looking for ways to do more. While the government allows each porter to carry up to 25 kg, we limit this to 20 kg to prioritize their health and safety. Each porter carries up to 15 kg of company equipment and 5 kg of personal items. This is why it is crucial to keep your personal duffel bag weight under our 7 kg limit. You might see other companies allowing their porters to carry more than the allotted weight, but at Alpaca Expeditions, we strictly adhere to these limits to ensure our porters' well-being.

Clases de Cocina

Alpaca Expeditions offers its passengers the chance to experience local cooking. We aim to immerse trekkers in Inca life by walking them through the original Inca paths and teaching them about Inca culture. Food is a significant part of Inca life, making it a special element in any tour or trek with Alpaca Expeditions.

cooking classes

In 2022, Alpaca Expeditions introduced a cooking class as part of each of our treks, conducted by our amazing trekking chefs and interpreted by our guides.

We will transform your dining tent into a makeshift kitchen, providing all the necessary supplies to prepare a Peruvian specialty. Your chef will guide you step by step through the process of making a traditional Peruvian meal, such as Lomo Saltado, and share some essential mountain cooking tips.

Peru is recognized as a top culinary destination, largely thanks to the popularity of our renowned beef dish, Lomo Saltado. This is most often the meal you will learn to cook, but there is also the opportunity to learn how to prepare other dishes like traditional Peruvian ceviche or even our signature drink, the pisco sour.

Cooking Class on the Inca Trail: These classes are voluntary and designed to be a fun, educational experience. Our clients consistently marvel at the amazing ability of our chefs to create culinary magic on a mountaintop. As you learn to prepare and cook Peruvian specialties, you will also see firsthand how such elaborate meals can be created on a small campsite stove.

Enjoy a cooking class in the mountains and be sure to take plenty of photos, just in case your friends won't believe your incredible experience.

Satellite Phones

The best way to hike in the mountains of Peru is to completely disconnect from technology, especially the internet and cell phones. The most impressive and exciting aspect is the opportunity to experience the true and wonderful nature that we often miss when we are at home, watching TV or absorbed in our cell phones during our leisure time. The feeling of being disconnected from work and the daily routine left at home is incredible.

satellite phones

However, this remoteness means limited access to emergency resources. That's why Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones for every trek.

We are prepared to assist you in case of any emergency, particularly health-related issues. For this reason, Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones, as they are one of the most crucial tools for any operator trekking in remote areas where telephone or television signals are absent. This means that every guide on our treks will be equipped with a fully charged satellite phone as well as radios. While these are primarily for emergencies, we allow our clients to use them at any time.

We ask that you cover the cost, which is $2.50 per minute. This fee can be paid in cash at our office or via PayPal once you have completed the trek.

Being just a phone call away from any doctor, hospital, or friend helps everyone feel assured of their safety. Radios, which all our guides carry, have limited reach, so Alpaca Expeditions includes satellite phones to ensure that we can connect no matter where we are on the mountain.

Portable private toilet

We understand that our clients will need restroom facilities at various times and locations during their journey. Along the Inca Trail, there are restrooms available, particularly those belonging to the communities near the trail. Alpaca Expeditions provides portable toilets to enhance this service, which will be set up at each meal site or campsite.

toilet tent

As with any mountain trip where we are exposed to nature, it is possible to use natural areas as restrooms. However, it is crucial to be mindful of the waste we generate, such as toilet paper or wet wipes used for cleaning. These should be carried with us and not discarded on the ground or left along the trail. Remember, the Inca Trail is a protected area overseen by a government institution. In places where garbage bins are unavailable, particularly at our camps, we provide special plastic bags for waste. Our porter team will be responsible for carrying out our waste.

Please be aware that although there are designated bathrooms for men and women, in practice, both genders often use the same facilities. Functionally, there is no significant difference between men's and women's bathrooms. Therefore, it is common for people of all genders to use whichever bathroom is available.

Best time to visit peru.

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.

Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs

Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.

This is a stark contrast to the   European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese   and Chinese immigrants.

Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.

What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or   futbol , as it’s called here.

Eating and drinking

Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.

Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.

The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Taste your way through Peru on our 10 day Peru Real Food Adventure.

Foods to try in Peru

Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chilli peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.

Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.

3. Lomo saltado

This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.

4. Pisco sour

Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.

5. Coca tea

Rumoured to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment

Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the centre of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organised civilisations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.

Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilisations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilisations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.

However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.

Recent history

Peru's more recent history has been dominated by military coups and regional disputes. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices levelling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.

New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.

Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

Must-visit places in Peru

Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:

1. Machu Picchu

No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.

Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day Inca Trail Express from Lima tour.

History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.

3. Sacred Valley

This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every colour, produce and animal imaginable.

Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day Sacred Land of the Incas trip.

4. Amazon Jungle

Spend mornings watching colourful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.

Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day Amazon Jungle Short Break.

Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.

Savour the flavours of Lima on our 20 day Peru Encompassed tour.

6. Arequipa

The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.

7. Colca Canyon

While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 metres, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.

Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day Peru Essentials tour.

8. Lake Titicaca

Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.

See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a Lake Titica Homestay.

9. Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometres. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.

10. Aguas Calientes

Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or travelled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.

Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our 9 Premium Peru trip.

You'll find vendors selling colourful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.

Things to buy in Peru

1. Alpaca wool clothing

As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.

The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has travelled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.

3. Jewellery

Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.

Festivals and events

Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organised), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:

Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)

The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic, two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.

Mistura Culinary Festival

Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.

Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

Each year before Lent, cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

Is tipping customary in Peru?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Peru, it's customary to add spare change or a small amount to restaurant bills. Although most restaurants and bars may already include a 10% service charge within the bill, feel free to add more if the service is really good. Taxi drivers generally don't expect tips.

What is the internet access like in Peru?

Internet can be accessed at hotels, restaurants and cafes in large cities, but it can be more limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Peru?

Mobile phone coverage is generally good in Peru’s cities, but may not be available in more remote and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home. You could also buy a local SIM card when you arrive.

What's the weather like in Peru?

The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit  Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this  South American  country.

What to wear in Peru

Wearing layers made of natural, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton is a good idea for Peru's varying climates. Merino wool is good for hiking and trekking as it wicks away moisture and regulates body temperature, and lightweight, quick-drying sportswear is a good shout for hot weather.

What are the toilets like in Peru?

Peru has a mix of both squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitiser, as they're not always provided. Toilet paper isn't supposed to be flushed, and most toilets have a bin next to them to dispose of the used toilet paper. Some public toilets charge a small usage fee. Expect to use squat toilets if travelling on the Inca Trail.

Can I drink the tap water in Peru?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Peru . I t's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating . Your local leader will be able to help you find filtered water, and for environmental reasons, we suggest filling a reusable bottle to avoid buying plastic bottles.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Peru?

Most hotels, large retailers and tourist attractions accept credit cards but will usually charge a fee (about 7%) for using them. Make sure you carry cash for when you're dealing with small vendors, family-run restaurants and market vendors.

What is ATM access like in Peru?

ATMs can be found in most of Peru's major cities and tourist areas. ATMs are far less common in rural areas and small villages so have enough cash to cover purchases when travelling away from the larger cities.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

What kinds of transport will be used in Peru?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Pedal along Lima’s incredible coastline, making your way through local areas and go on a cycling adventure to the epic Sacred Valley.

Spot exotic flowers, birds and mammals while enjoying a canoe ride down the mighty Amazon River.

Everyone gets a window seat while riding on the Vistadome train. The clear roof and windows allow maximum viewing for all.

What kinds of accommodation will I be staying in?

Experience home-grown hospitality and food while staying with a local family who live right on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

  • Jungle Lodge

Stay close to the wildlife action in a lodge located within the leafy wilds of the awesome Amazon Jungle.

Camping along the Inca Trail is one of the world's most sought-after travel experiences. Bond with new friends over delicious local food and rest up before another day of trekking.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Peru?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Peru but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Recommended travel vaccines for Peru:

1. Hepatitis A (transmitted through contaminated water) 2. Typhoid (transmitted through contaminated water) 3. Yellow Fever (transmitted by mosquitos): This vaccination is recommended if you’re visiting Puno or the Amazon. Some countries require a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate for entry after visiting Peru. Do your research before leaving home to see if you require this vaccine.

Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 m (6561 ft) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of travelling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Is Peru an LGBTQIA+friendly destination?

While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is in fact the flag of the Inca Empire and not a Pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQIA+ rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQIA+ community don’t publicly identify themselves and generally Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQIA+ travellers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when travelling in country areas.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.

Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Donations from our trips support the growth and development of their programs to lift more women into financial independence.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

Where to Get the Most Bang for Your Buck

American travelers going abroad this summer will find their money buys more in some unexpected countries, including Japan and Australia.

A chubby gray koala bear lounges in between two branches of a tree.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

It’s the backpacker’s call to India, the sunseeker’s attraction to Mexico, and the digital nomad’s drive to get to Thailand: Go where the dollar buys more.

The evergreen budget travel strategy is getting a boost this summer: The dollar has surged against a number of foreign currencies, including the Japanese yen, thanks to high interest rates offered by the Federal Reserve — attracting foreign investment, which bolsters the dollar.

“A destination’s weaker currency spells greater value for U.S. tourists,” said Erina Pindar, the chief operating officer and managing partner at SmartFlyer , a global travel agency based in New York City.

“This economic advantage could make far-flung bucket list destinations in Asia, such as Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan, or in South America, like Peru, Argentina and Chile, more accessible than ever before,” she added.

Distant destinations are usually more expensive to fly to, which, along with the physical toll of jet lag, helps make the case for the country’s North American neighbors, Canada and Mexico , where the exchange rates have long favored the dollar’s buying power.

But this year there are some new contenders with attractive exchange rates to consider, including the following destinations.

Currently, the U.S. dollar is worth about 1.50 Australian dollars, up about 16 percent over the last three years.

The hurdle, of course, is the long flight, which can easily run over $1,000 round trip. But the travel search engine Kayak lists some attractive summer round-trip fares between the West Coast and Sydney starting at $770, with the best availability in August.

Getting around Australia by air isn’t cheap either, especially since the recent collapse of the low-cost carrier Bonza. Jetstar offers lower fares, including, recently, $50 one-way tickets between Melbourne and Adelaide.

Camper vans can be an affordable way to take an Australian road trip, with companies like Jucy , Britz and Apollo offering vehicles that include beds and cooking facilities. Jucy recently priced a two-person van rented for a week in July at about $53 a night.

The Northern Hemisphere summer is Australia’s winter. If you’re planning a ski vacation in the Australian Alps, Tourism Australia suggests avoiding mid-July when schools are on break and many families head to the slopes.

Australia does not have a culture of tipping, potentially saving travelers 20 percent on restaurant meals, according to Craig Bradbery, the chief operating officer of Baillie Lodges, which includes the newly rebuilt Southern Ocean Lodge , a luxury property on Kangaroo Island.

Bali, Indonesia

Many destinations in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, offer compelling exchange rates. In Indonesia, the rupiah is at a four-year low against the dollar.

“I would send clients to Bali, Indonesia,” said Rob Huie, the owner of Luxury Travel Services by Rob , based in Millsboro, Del., noting that the cost of living is low on the island. “The caveat is a higher upfront cost to fly there, but once you’re there you are able to stay at three- and four-star hotels at very affordable rates, have meals for $10 to $25 per day and massages for $10 to $30.”

Travelers with Marriott loyalty points can cash them in at the Four Points by Sheraton Bali, Kuta (rooms from $57 a night). IGH Reward members can spend or earn points at Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach (from $138).

Tripadvisor’s list of the top budget hotels in the central highlands around Ubud includes options under $100.

Bali is a good place to look for a vacation rental, according to the home rental platform HomeToGo . Its data shows the median per-night price for a rental property on Bali this summer is $86, compared to the median price of a rental in the United States at $388.

“Despite the strength of the U.S. dollar on a global scale, prices across the states continue to rise, prompting travelers to look to international destinations where their dollar can stretch further,” said Eleanor Moody, a travel expert at HomeToGo, who added that searches for rentals in Indonesia have more than doubled in the past year.

South America — including Argentina where inflation has spiraled, and Peru where the sol has softened against the dollar — is another place to look for value.

“Stop going to Europe,” said Cecile Blot, the owner of the travel agency Boundless Travels in Washington, D.C., praising “destination dupes” in South America. “Many of the countries on the southern continent offer the entire package — history, culture, nature, culinary delights, world-class accommodation — at a fraction of the price.”

One of these is Colombia , where the dollar recently equaled about 3,935 pesos, a gain of roughly 20 percent over the past five years.

“Colombia has something for everyone,” said Stefanie Pichonnat, the owner of AAV Travel , based in Terre Haute, Ind., citing Cartagena on the Caribbean as a budget-friendly substitute for a European capital, and coastal Tayrona National Natural Park as a cheaper alternative to Costa Rica.

“Coffee aficionados can spend days touring the coffee fincas, passionate hikers can challenge themselves with a trek to the páramo desert and bird watchers will find an abundance of options to explore,” she added.

Air service is frequent and affordable. A recent search for round-trip fares from the New York area turned up summer departures starting from about $290 to the capital of Bogotá and $320 to coastal Cartagena.

From Bogotá, visitors can reach Chingaza National Natural Park in the eastern Andes or spend a few days in the laid-back colonial city of Villa de Leyva . But Colombia’s mountainous terrain and perilous roads often require travelers to fly domestically to see other areas.

Among tour operators that do the planning for you, Responsible Travel , based in England, offers a customizable 12-day trip to Colombia that visits Bogotá, Medellín and the central coffee country, including the lush Cocora Valley with its nearly 200-foot-tall wax palm trees (from $2,990 a person).

The U.S. dollar is currently worth about 156 Japanese yen, a gain of more than 11 percent over the past year.

Demand for Japan was already booming when the economic picture improved. BWH Hotels , which includes Best Western Hotels, said occupancy and rates have grown steadily for the past two years because of demand and a shortage of employees, especially in popular destinations like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hokkaido.

But with careful planning, Americans can still exploit the exchange rate. IHG Hotels & Resorts , which operates hotel brands in the country from the design-focused Voco to the high-end InterContinental, suggested traveling by early July for the best rates (an overnight at the Voco Osaka Central starts at $135).

The Japanese-owned Hoshino Resorts tend to be upscale, but their OMO line offers more entry-level accommodations, from capsule hotels to full-service locations. The OMO5 Kyoto Gion , for example, offers rooms that sleep up to six people and include kitchens, starting at 24,000 yen, or about $153. Staff guides offer free tours to temples in the area.

While many temples, parks and shrines are free, travelers in the capital can get the Tokyo Museum Grutto Pass for 2,500 yen (about $16) that includes admission to more than 100 museums and attractions around town.

Among its tips for budget travelers, the tourism office of Japan recommends making lunch your big meal as many restaurants offer midday specials.

There are a number of cost-conscious ways to get around Japan, including trains (a Japan Rail Pass starts at 50,000 yen, or about $320, for seven days), low-cost airlines like Peach and Zipair and overnight buses .

Or consider walking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route that connects sacred shrines in the Kii Mountains. Walk Japan has a self-guided seven-day trip, including accommodations and most meals, starting at 224,000 yen.

"The City of Kings", as Lima is known, was founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro and became the center of Spanish power in Peru, during the colonial period. The urban planning of Lima is one of the colonial models in South America. Lima is known for its social, economical and cultural growth and stands out as the cultural center of Latin America; besides that, Lima is the home of San Marcos National University, the most ancient from America, founded in 1551.Lima is famous for being the viceroyalty capital of Peru and one of the cities most important of South America in the spanish regime period; after its independance in 1821 the city became the republic's capital. Before this period, the Baroque and Neoclassical style took the power on the streets, impregnating those architectural styles in the main constructions. The capital counts a high variety of tourist attractions that combine history and modernity, as you can see on the Historical Center. Another strong point of Lima is the food, there are many restaurants from the 3 Peruvian regions where you can live a complete gastronomical experience, given that the population is multicultural and mostly migrant. Live Peru from one of its corners, and enjoy tasting the culture that Peru offers you!

About Huaraz

The name Huaraz comes from “waraq”, a word in quechua which means sunrise. The origins of Huaraz go back to the Pre-Inca period, when the first human settlement took place close to the rivers Quilcay and Santa. It has been verified the human presence in the area of Callejón de Huaylas since 10.000 B. C., when the human beings were dedicated to harvest and hunting; this is testified by the Guitarrero cave in front of Mancos village. It was the chavín culture that was developed in this area during the Horizonte Temprano. Many years later, Spanish people founded the city as San Sebastián de Huaraz, in 1574 and Simón Bolívar called the city “noble and generous”, because of its support to the liberating army during the independence of Peru. It was also called the “capital of international friendship”, in recognition of its help to the victims of the earthquake of 1970 in Áncash; on the seism 20.000 people from Huaraz died and 95% of the city was reduced to ashes.Huaraz is the capital of Áncash department and is considered the “Peruvian Switzerland” for being located on the surroundings of the snowy mountain of Cordillera Blanca. The development of Huaraz is based in the agriculture, trade and tourism, because in Huaraz is concentrated most of the tourist activity of the Sierra de Áncash.
