Ali Garland, Berlin expert & long term resident What to Do

Exploring Berlin at night can show you a whole different side to the city. Whether you’re interested in the Berlin nightlife or you want a quieter experience, there are plenty of fun things to do at night in Berlin . You can still enjoy a lot of this city after the sun goes down, and for some people, Berlin’s famous nightlife is their top reason for visiting.

Keep in mind that sunset time varies greatly from summer to winter. That won’t matter for some activities, but for others, when it gets dark can affect what you want to do. Check before you plan your evening activities in Berlin .

Where to go in Berlin at Night

Let’s take a look at some of the best things to do in Berlin at night.

Berlin skyline - Berlin night time activities

Go up the TV Tower

The TV Tower has some of the best views of Berlin from above . If you go up to the observation level a little before sunset, you’ll get to see the city while it’s still light out, and then watch how the sky and the views change as the sun sets. It’s quite impressive.

Location: Panoramastraße 1A, 10178 Berlin Opening hours: November – March 10 am to 10 pm, April – October 9 am to 11 pm Entrance: starting at 22.50 euros for adults and 12.50 euros for children for viewing platform only

Take photos at Brandenburg Gate

Many Berlin attractions at night are lit up, including Brandenburger Tor, one of Berlin’s most famous landmarks . You can get some really nice pictures here around sunset time, or if you visit after dark, you’ll get a different experience with the lights.

Location: Pariser Platz, 10117 Berlin Opening hours: Open 24 hours a day Entrance: Free

Go to the Liquidrom Spa

Spas are very popular in Germany, and Berlin has several good ones. But the Liquidrom is an interesting place to go in Berlin at night because it’s not your typical spa. Here you can listen to techno music underwater, because Berlin loves its techno, and a few nights a week there’s even a DJ.

Location: Möckernstrasse 10, 10963 Berlin Opening Hours: Sunday – Thursday 9am – midnight; Friday and Saturday 9am – 1am Entrance: starts at 22.50 euros, depends on services

Visit the Reichstag Building

The Reichstag Building is the seat of the German government. Not only that, but you can actually take a free audio tour into the unique glass domed roof.

Berlin Reichstag Buiding at sunset

I recommend visiting while there’s still some light so you can enjoy the views from the rooftop terrace, but since the last entry is at 9:45pm, you can plan your visit to arrive shortly before sunset. That way you can see the views with some daylight and enjoy the sunset as well.

Note that this popular activity must be booked in advance. Read my full guide to booking and taking the Reichstag free audio guide tour .

Location: Platz der Republik 1, 11011 Berlin Hours: Varies Admission: Free for audio guide tour

Stroll down Unter den Linden

One of the most well known streets in Berlin is Unter den Linden. Many important monuments, museums, and other sights are located here. The buildings are gorgeous any time of day, but enjoying these Berlin attractions at night gives you a different perspective. Grab a beer and go for a stroll. Unter den Linden runs between Brandenburger Tor and the Berliner Dom.

See the East Side Gallery

If you’re looking for the best places to visit in Berlin at night, the East Side Gallery is a good one. It’s well lit at night, and since it’s open 24 hours a day, it’s an easy sight to save for after hours when most other museums and attractions are closed. Check out my full article about visiting the East Side Gallery , including how to get there and more.

Location: Mühlenstraße 3-100, 10243 Berlin Opening hours: Open 24 hours a day Entrance: Free

Listen to music

Berlin is also a city that loves music. See a big concert at Olympic Stadium or Mercedes Arena, or for a more intimate setting, seek out a music club. A-Trane is a well known jazz club in Berlin. Exberliner is a good place to look for live music.

Have dinner at Street Food Thursday

This is a hidden gem in Berlin is well known by locals but often missed by tourists. Markthalle Neun is an indoor market in Kreuzberg that focuses on local and organic (Bio in German) produce, meats, cheeses, and other products.

The main market runs on Saturdays and there are some stalls open every day except Sunday. But come on Thursday night for Street Food Thursday. This is a popular event where you can try lots of different and interesting food. It gets crowded though, so bring some patience.

Location: Eisenbahnstraße 42/43, 10997 Berlin Opening Hours: Thursdays 5pm – 10pm (hours are only for Street Food Thursday) Entrance: Free

Berlin is an excellent city for enjoying the arts, so if you’re looking for cultural places to go in Berlin at night, a theater might be perfect. At Friedrichstadt Palast you can see Vegas-style productions and musicals. Listen to an impressive concert at Berliner Philharmonie. Or see an opera at Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Deutsche Oper, or Komische Oper. Fun Berlin fact : Berlin is the only city in the world with three operating opera houses.

Party at the clubs

Berlin nightlife is legendary due to its club scene. Some people plan a trip to Berlin simply to go to clubs, so if it’s high on your list, I totally understand. A few of the most popular clubs in Berlin are Berghain, Watergate, Tresor, Sisyphos, and KitKat.

Be aware that some are harder to get into than others, and not all of them are just about the music. Berghain is world famous and notoriously difficult to get into. And at KitKat, you’re required to leave your clothes at the coat check, so choose your underwear wisely. It doesn’t take too much imagination to understand what kinds of activities happen at that club.

Interested in a cheesy approximation of a club? Check out Teledisko, quite possibly the smallest dance club in the world. It’s basically a phone booth that plays music. You pay a few euros, pick a song, and dance your heart out. You can even pay a little extra for pictures or videos. There are three that I know of, although Google Maps only seems to know of two. They are at RAW , Holzmarkt , and Mercedes Platz .

Go to a bar

Clubbing not your scene? Trust me, I get it. But you can still enjoy the tamer side of Berlin nightlife by having a few drinks at a bar.

Berlin Friedrichshain bars Gallery Rooftop Bar - things to see in Berlin at night

There are great bars all over the city, but for a truly amazing experience, try one of these rooftop bars in Berlin where you can have a delicious cocktail with a spectacular view. Or check out Berlin’s craft beer bars for some creative brews.

Another interesting option is the Berlin Icebar. Everything in the bar from the furniture to the glass you drink out of is made of ice. They provide you with a warm coat and gloves, plus your entrance ticket comes with three drinks. You’re sure to have a unique Berlin evening here. Get tickets for the Icebar here .

Book a beer tour for your trip to Berlin

Berlin has a great craft beer scene. Taking a beer tour is the perfect way to try different beers and learn about craft beer here. A knowledgeable guide will bring you to several different places to try different beers.

We’re partial to this craft beer tour since it’s in our neighborhood (Friedrichshain) and we know the bars are top notch: 3.5-Hour Guided Original Craft Beer Tour in Berlin

Take a dinner cruise

A boat tour on the Spree River is a fun way to see some of the sights. But if you’re interested in something a little nicer, why not book an evening in Berlin on a dinner cruise like this one . It combines sightseeing with a 4 course meal and drinks as the boat takes you along the river and past attractions like the Reichstag Building and Museum Island.

Reichstag and Spree River in Berlin evening

Soak up some culture on Long Night of Museums

OK this one is only on one night in Berlin, but it’s a fun one. More than 70 museums stay open late from 6pm to 2am and hold special events like readings, talks, workshops, music, and more. There’s also a shuttle bus that takes you around to the different museums, all under one ticket . This year it takes place on August 24, 2024, so if you’re visiting Berlin in summer , check this out.

Another late night event like this is Botanical Night, this year on July 19-20, 2024. It’s when the Botanical Gardens turns into an enchanted place of lights, music, and illusions.

Enjoy the Festival of Lights

This is another seasonal event, which takes place in autumn in Berlin . For a little over a week, artistic light installations illuminate buildings and landmarks all around the city.

Berlin Brandenburger Tor Festival of Lights Berlin night activities

This is one of the free things to do in Berlin at night since the event starts after the sun goes down. The dates for 2024 haven’t been announced yet, but it’s normally in October. Check out my full guide to the Berlin Festival of Lights for more info.

Get festive at the Christmas markets

For several weeks in winter in Berlin , you can enjoy some really fun Christmas markets.

Charlottenburg Palace Christmas market Berlin places to visit at night

They typically start in mid to late November and end anywhere from December 22 to early January. And while they are enjoyable any time of the day, there’s something magical about going to Christmas markets at night in Berlin.

Relax at a beer garden

Any time from late spring to early autumn, beer gardens are fun places to go at night in Berlin. After a long day of sightseeing, rest your feet and do as the locals do. Grab a beer and chat at a beer garden while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. Here are a few of our favorite beer gardens in Berlin .

Where to stay in Berlin

Berlin has lots of great neighborhoods for you to stay in and explore. If you’re visiting Berlin for the first time, it might be best for you stay somewhere central.

Many of the attractions are in Mitte or easily connected to Mitte by Berlin’s public transport , so you should stay somewhere in that region. Here are a few hotels we recommend.

BUDGET: Circus Hostel Popular hostel with a bar/brewery downstairs

MIDRANGE: Circus Hotel Centrally located near restaurants & transport

UPSCALE: Westin Grand Centrally located, can chisel off your own piece of the Berlin Wall

UPSCALE: Westin Grand Luxury hotel where you can chisel off your own piece of the Berlin Wall

APARTMENT: Adina Apartment Hotel Kitchenette; near grocery stores, shopping, Museum Island

For a more unusual evening out, head to Liquidrom, a futuristic spa that merges holistic therapies with techno music.

The building was built during World War II (which you can find out more about on this tour ) and served as a large train station.

The pool is surrounded by large arches and is dimly lit, allowing the colourful lights and music to take over the experience.

The music varies from classical to techno and can be heard from under the water.

Liquidrom is at 10 Möckernstraße, Berlin 10963.

Since its opening, Clärchens has served delicious dinners and put on lively performances from live bands with plenty of dancing.

During hectic periods, servers carry trays of dishes above their heads as they dance through the crowds.

Clärchens is the last remaining ball house from the 20th century.

Check out their Hall of Mirrors, which has been preserved in its original state.

Clärchens Ballhaus is at Auguststraße 24, 10117, Berlin.

VISIT THE BRANDENBURG GATE

If you are a history buff looking to explore the city’s nook and corners to learn more about Berlin, head to Brandenburg Gate.

Inspired by the Acropolis in Athens, this monumental structure boasts twelve majestic neo-classical columns.

Berlin night activities

It holds a profound place in Berlin’s history, making it one of the cool things to do in Berlin at night.

Built in 1791 under the patronage of the Prussian Hohenzollern monarchy, the gate served as a dramatic and ceremonial entrance to the Kingdom of Prussia.

Originally named the Peace Gate, it was commissioned by Frederick William II during the late 1700s.

The gate features five passageways, though citizens were initially only allowed to use the outer two on each side.

On the top of the gate was Quadriga, a magnificent chariot bearing the goddess of peace drawn by four horses.

berlin by night tour

In 1806, after defeating the city, Napoleon made a triumphant entry through the gate and carried off Quadriga to France.

Berlin eventually recovered it in 1814, transforming the gate and its triumphant goddess into a symbol of victory adorned with an iron cross and an eagle.

Subsequently, during the Nazi regime’s rise to power, the gate was co-opted as a symbol for their party.

Despite suffering damage during World War II, the Brandenburg Gate remained standing at the war’s end.

In 1989, it once again assumed a new role, symbolizing freedom and the reunification of Berlin when the Berlin Wall fell.

Head to the Watergate or Berghain , the most famous club in the city, but prepare for a strict door policy with a reasonable chance of being denied, particularly at the latter.

(10) Berlin in the Summer

With its mild summer nights and long hours of sunlight, Berlin seems to blossom in the summer.

Residents and visitors alike make use of the break from the gray winters to flock outside and enjoy seasonal entertainment and events.

(11) Open Air Theaters

Various open air movie theaters pop up throughout the city in the summer, showing anything from current Hollywood blockbusters to international art house movies.

Head to the theater at the Kulturforum to be close to the bars at Potsdamer Platz and Mitte for post-movie drinks.

(12) Enjoy a drink at a Beach Bar

Berliners are nothing if not resourceful, and that includes making use of the warm summer nights to fuel up on vacation feelings in the heart of a northern European city.

'Beach bars' have cropped up around the banks of the Spree and various green spaces, providing Berliners with an escape from the concrete jungle, with their imported sand and tropical cocktails.

Check out the Yaam in Friedrichshain for a Caribbean flair or the Strandbar Mitte with its gorgeous view of the lit up Museum Island.

8 Unmissable Things To Do In Berlin At Night

Berlin, Germany

Berlin is something of a cultural gem that is all too often overlooked by visitors choosing a European city to explore. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, it opened an entirely new aspect to the city. An abundance of cheap buildings to rent soon attracted artists, not only from Germany, but from many other parts of the world.

That influx of creativity gradually spread throughout the city leaving visitors with a wealth of exciting cultural opportunities to explore. The city already had a rich history, an abundance of markets, and some great architectural offerings. This new dynamic simply built on that. Modern Berlin is a city with a wealth of different neighborhoods, all with their own unique vibe, and you can get to know them better in our guide on where to stay in Berlin .

Today, any visit to Berlin is bound to offer wonderful new discoveries in everything from cuisine to culture. Although public transport options are plentiful, you need to be aware that if you’re carrying heavy bags your visit will be severely restricted. Berlin luggage storage services have been strategically placed both in this city and many others throughout the world. You may want to consider storing your bags and only carrying with you the luggage that you will need during your stay.

Walking Tours

Discovering a new city can sometimes be a slightly intimidating process, especially if you're doing so by night. One comfortable way to get a feel for this magical city is by taking a walking tour. Berlin offers a wide variety of guided night tours, most of which take place on foot. Walking through a city with a tour guide offers a perfect opportunity to really get a feel for Berlin.

As far as a walking tour is concerned, you will soon find that there are a plethora of options from which to choose. Berlin will always be associated with beer and a guided brewery tour is a great way to take advantage of local knowledge. Whether you opt for a craft beer tour or prefer something more in the way of the pub crawl, there is bound to be something that will match your desires.

If you would prefer your guided tour to offer more insight into the city’s history, there are a number of tours that you might want to consider. They range from free tours with a local guide through to private personalized tours, and even tours by cycle rickshaw. Some of the sites you will be taken to may not be open, but even those that are not tend to be illuminated at night so that you can still get a sense of them.

Most of these tours will take in more iconic Berlin landmarks such as Alexanderplatz, the TV tower and the Berlin Cathedral. You might also want to consider a dedicated culinary tour or, if you're there in September, a tour of Kurfurstendamm 's famous spectacle of lights.

Like much of Germany, the city is rich in museums. Most of these close at around 6 PM and so make for an ideal early evening visit. One notable exception to this rule is the German Spy Museum whose doors remain open until 8 PM. The only spy museum in Germany, this visit offers an interesting and often eye-opening insight into the world of espionage. Tickets cost seven euros although discounted prices can be attained by online booking.

If you are a museum fan then one cool thing about any Berlin trip is a visit to Museum Island . This UNESCO World Heritage site is built on the North of Spree Island and is home to half a dozen of the best museums in the city. This includes noteworthy sites such as the Neues Museum and the Pergamon Museum. Even if you are unable to visit all of them, Museum Island makes for an ideal nighttime stroll during which you can take in the fabulous architecture within which these museums are housed.

Café in Berlin, Germany

For decades, live music and live concerts have been synonymous with Berlin. Many new indie bands cut their teeth here and Berlin offers some great music venues, no matter what genre of music you are into. In this unique city, you can experience classical genius at the Berlin Phiharmonic or one of several other opera houses or you could take in something very different listening to music by international artists at one of the regular open air concerts that take place around the city or in its large concert halls.

One of the must-do things you can do in Berlin by night is head for Silent Green . Here, in the rather unusual setting of what was once Berlin's first crematorium, you can listen to a wide variety of different genres. The domed ceiling provides not only a unique setting, but some amazing acoustics. Today, Silent Green is also the base for renowned K7 records.

Boxhaugener Platz is a popular eating district and while you are there you are likely to feel the beat of music bouncing at you. It will almost definitely be emanating from Astra Kulturehaus where any night of the week you will be able to listen to pop music and indie rock. Concerts cost anything from eight euros to forty euros depending on who is performing.

Jazz is one genre of music one might not at first associate with Germany but, in fact, Berlin is home to some hidden gems of the international jazz scene. Both classical and experimental jazz venues have become established in the city.

The jazz connoisseur can experience great music at one of several popular jazz clubs scattered throughout the city. Look out for B Flat, A-Trane, Quazimodo and The Zig Zag Club. All play host to an interesting array of both local and international artists, so check to see what grabs you most.

If a long night of clubbing, bars, and music is more to your taste, Berlin offers a wide array of options to choose from. You won't need to go far to take advantage of the vibrant nightlife. The main nightlife party hotspots are City West, Hackescher Markt, and Orienbrunger Strasse in the city center, and Wranglestrake along the Spree River.

Each of these districts comes with its own unique atmosphere, but you will have numerous bars and clubs to explore. Bear in mind that Berlin clubs tend to adhere to a strict door policy so check in advance to ensure that you will be dressed appropriately. The good news is that public transport runs all night in Berlin so you shouldn't have any trouble getting home after a long night out.

Berghain is situated in an abandoned power station and is one of the best-known clubs, not only in Germany, but also internationally. The building actually contains not just the Berghain Club, with its passion for techno music, but also the Panorama Bar with an altogether different atmosphere and a leaning more towards house music.

Berlin, Germany

Famous Landmarks

Any visit to Berlin will not be complete unless you take in some of the significant landmarks that the city has to offer. Even if all you do is walk past some of these iconic sites and snap a selfie as you do so, you will regret it if you don't take the opportunity while you have it.

The Brandenburg Gate is possibly the most iconic site in the city. It was built in 1791 and sits right above Pariser Platz which is a square that is home to many important buildings in Berlin. Another must-see that can be impressive at night is the Reichstag which houses the federal government and is covered in a glass dome that is lit up by night making for great photos. It is just a short hop from both the Brandenburg Gate and the Bundskanzleramt.

One obvious landmark, and one you will spot immediately, is the TV Tower. This 368-meter high needle dominates the skyline and affords spectacular 360° views of the city. It is the perfect place from which to get your bearings as you gaze down toward the concrete jungle at your feet. It is open from ten until ten and there is a restaurant where you can enjoy fine dining. If you prefer to keep your visit a little more modest then you can visit the viewing deck which includes a bar.

When you visit Museum Island, one building that is bound to catch your eye will be the Humbold Forum opposite. This 30 000 square meter building of five floors is home to the city's forum for art, science, and culture, and was once a baroque palace that was recently converted.

Another building that will catch your attention is the Reichstag Building which today houses the Bundestag and is situated in Platz der Republik. It was originally opened in 1894 but despite its opulence, it fell into disrepair and was mothballed until it was reopened after the cold war and became home to the lower house of the German Government.

Eating Out in Berlin

Along with the artists who migrated to this city after the fall of the wall, came the chefs. This city offers a very varied culinary palette. Whether it's just Bratwurst in a beer garden or a sit-down classic meal taken in the revolving restaurant of the TV Tower, you will not run short of eating options.

Some of the dishes to look out for include currywurst, of which Berliners are exceptionally proud. Maultaschen is a pasta stuffed with different meat options, while Spatzle is similar to pasta and is a dish that vegetarians may want to consider. In addition to meatballs, schnitzels, and bockwurst, you will find plenty of more exotic options such as Thai, Vietnamese and Turkish.

Restaurants abound throughout the city but a couple of areas you might like to try include Mitte, Savignyplatz, Potsdamer Platz, and Hackersche Markt where you can find reasonably priced dishes. One fun alternative is the rooftop restaurant at Hotel de Rome in Behrenstrabe which offers an island of tranquility from which to escape the city for a moment and offers gorgeous views. And if you're looking for the best things to eat in the city, look no further than our guide to the best street food in Berlin .

The Berlin Wall

Finally, no visit to Berlin at night would be complete without at least paying a brief visit to the infamous Berlin Wall. Originally built to prevent dissidents fleeing the East, this wall was arguably one of the most iconic features of the Cold War. Checkpoint Charlie is a name that will forever be associated with both Berlin and the Cold War.

The wall was up for twenty-eight years and ran for a total of 155 kilometers (96 miles). Today just two kilometers (1.2miles) of the wall is still standing but it attracts tourists in their thousands as they come to pay homage to this historical landmark and all that it represented.

The best place to visit is the 1.3 kilometers known today as the East Side Gallery. The name comes from the fact that it was painted on by international artists in 1990 and again in 2009. The East Side Gallery is a must-see visit and one that will provide you with lasting memories and some great photos.

Berlin, Germany

Berlin, Germany is a unique city that is packed with cool things to do. Nightlife here is both varied and dynamic, and in addition to the many well-known sites, Berlin is awash with secret places just waiting for you to discover them. Whether you fancy a pub crawl, live concerts, or a refined evening of dining followed by a visit to one of the opera houses, there are plenty of things to do in Berlin at night. Public transportation is cheap and there are many free things to enjoy there after dark.

You will have the choice of diving into the party hotspots or making new friends as you enjoy the famous landmarks from a different angle on a night cruise along the Spree River. In short, Berlin is definitely a city that should go onto any traveler's bucket list.
