Cruises from Bergen

Bergen is an arrival and departure point for many cruise ships on their way to Northern Europe. This includes cruises to Norway and the Norwegian fjords, as well as Scandinavia and the Baltic. Cruise lines including Viking Cruises, and others all provide departures from Bergen.

Bergen is a destination that should be on the itinerary of each cruise through Norway due to its alluring setting in the middle of Fjord Norway. Around 330 cruise ships make port visits in Bergen each year, bringing in a total of more than 600,000 cruise passengers. Cruise passengers frequently stop at Bergen on their way to or from the Norwegian fjords. Skolten Cruise Port, also known as Vagen Harbor, is where smaller cruise ships dock when they arrive in Bergen, whereas Dokken Port, located next to the Fish Market, is where the larger cruise ships land.

Bergen, Norway

The Bergen Card is available for either 24 or 48 hours and grants the holder free rides on the city’s buses and Bybanen (Bergen’s light railway) as well as free or subsidized admission to a wide variety of museums and attractions. Beginning your exploration of Bergen’s rich cultural scene with a stroll around the city’s ancient Bryggen neighborhood is a great way to get started. This section of the town runs parallel to the harbor and was a major center of trade back in the 17th century. These days, it is filled with plenty of quaint museums and cafes, and it is famous for the brilliantly colored buildings that line its streets.

Aside from that, the Bergen Art Museum is home to some of the most impressive works of art in the entirety of Norway, and the Buergen Kunst Museum features artworks by the likes of Picasso, Munch, and Miro, in addition to a large number of works by local artists.

Bergen’s Seven Mountains

The Seven Mountains, which surround the city of Bergen, hold a special place in local lore and are a symbol of the region’s reverence for nature. Hiking in the varying mountainous and forested terrain that surrounds Bergen is a popular pastime. The mountains provide not just wide hiking pathways for people of varying levels of fitness but also breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings. You can choose from a variety of activities, from a casual 15-minute stroll in the sun to more challenging ones like day hikes and steep inclines. There are many more than seven mountains in the Bergen area, but these are the ones most often thought of as the “official seven.” They are: Ulriken, Flyen (sometimes called Flyfjellet), Lvstakken, Damsgrdsfjellet, Sandviksfjellet, Lyderhorn, and Rundemanen.

If you don’t feel like making the ascent on foot, you can always take the cable car from the city center up to the peak. The most popular peak is Mount Fyen, which can be reached from the city via the Flibanen Funicular, though the fitter among us are more likely to choose the 40-minute hike. From the top, you can see the fjords and the shoreline as you make your way to the other mountains, such as Mount Rundemanen and Mount Ulriken. The Ulriken cable car is conveniently accessible via regular bus service and the seasonal sightseeing bus.

Our cruise docks

A sustainable cruiseport.

The Port of Bergen actively works towards developing a more sustainable and environmentally friendly cruise tourism industry and features Europe's largest shore power facility for cruise ships. This facility allows three ships to connect simultaneously and operate emission-free while in port. The port also imposes restrictions on the number of ships and passengers, capping it at a maximum of four ships and 8,000 cruise passengers per day. Furthermore, the Port of Bergen has together with other Norwegian ports developed the EPI (Environmental Port Index), a system to calculate environmentally differentiated port fees based on the emissions of ships while they are in the port. By rewarding ships with the lowest emissions and thus the lowest environmental impact, the goal is to attract precisely these types of ships. EPI is now implemented by 19 Norwegian ports, as well as the ports in Reykjavik and Lisbon.

Berth reservation

The Port of Bergen will confirm requests for quay reservations if the ship meets one of the following criteria:

For 2024 and 2025, all ships must be Tier 2 compliant. Ships that do not meet these requirements can apply for quay space but must use shore power when docked.

When ordering a quay, the ship's data must be provided, including power type, consumption, location of power hatch (Stb/port), and distance from hatch to aft in meters.

From 2026, the requirement is for all ships to be on shore power.

The Port of Bergen follows international standards for shore power connections:

IEC 80005-3 low voltage (completed in 2024)

IEC 80005-1 high voltage

An EPI score above 45 provides a discount, while below 45 incurs a surcharge.

A 15 percent discount on quay fees for 2024 is granted when connected to power.

Bergen, Norway

Bergen: tourist information

A city with its feet in the sea, its head in the skies and its heart in the right place... full of infectious enthusiasm, and happy to share it with visitors. Welcome to Bergen, the old city with a young outlook.

Bergen grew up around its colourful harbour – it was the hub of commerce, seafaring and craftsmanship. It became the north’s largest city, Norway’s first capital city and the seat of royalty.

Bergensers have an in-born love for their city and even newcomers quickly fall under its spell. Bergen is a charming city full of small wooden houses. They scramble up the mountainsides and compete for space with wealthy mansions, flaunting themselves all the way into the city. Clusters of old houses cling together in among the new quarters. Bergensers take a keen interest in protecting their grass-root traditions and building styles, and Bergen architecture is distinctive yet diverse. Though Bergen has suffered many fires over the centuries, it still has one of Europe’s largest conglomerates of wooden houses.

Bergen, Norway

Norway's second-largest city, Bergen is the gateway to the country's mesmerizing fjords. Walking, Segway and double-decker bus tours bring you to Bryggen wharf, the 12th-century trade center that now is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the district's shops, galleries and art studios, and visit the Hanseatic Museum to learn about the merchants who once lived and sold here. The city is surrounded by seven mountains, and a funicular railway ride to the top of the tallest peak, Mount Floyen, reveals postcard-worthy views. Other notable attractions include St. Mary's Church, the town's oldest structure; the seasonal fish market, with its fresh seafood, fruit and vegetables; the Bergenhus Fortress Museum, which highlights Norway's role in World War II; and an aquarium, where you can observe sea lions, crocodiles and more. On a catamaran cruise to the picturesque Osterfjord and Mostraumen strait, sample ice-cold mountain water your captain captures from a waterfall.

Flam cruise port

Region Baltic - Norwegian Fjords - Russia

Local Time 2024-06-15 01:42

Port Flam cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Flam, Norway. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Flam is a small port village (population under 500) located in Flamsdalen, at the inner end of Aurlandsfjorden, a branch of Sognefjorden. It is situated in Aurland municipality, Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway.

Flam Church was built in 1670. The construction of Flam Line was financed by parliament in 1923. The decision to build the line was made in 1908. In 1942 ordinary operation of trains started on Flam Line. Cruise ships stayed on the fjord in the 1960s. The "new pier" was referred to in a Norwegian Government-issued document from 2000. The closest airport is Sogndal Airport, Haukasen, located approx 70 km (43 mi) from the cruise port. E16 highway from Oslo to Bergen runs through Flam. The route is approx 7 km (4,3 mi) southwest of Aurlandsvangen's downtown, 12 km (7,5 mi) south of Undredal, and 15 km (9,3 mi) east of Gudvangen (through Gudvanga Tunnel).

Flam has been a tourist destination since late-19th-century. Today it receives nearly 450,000 visitors per year. Most tourists ride the 20-km (12-mi) long Flam Line between (linking with Myrdal) ranked one of world's steepest railway tracks (at 1 in 18). There are a few spirals, as well. The former rail station building currently houses a museum dedicated to the railway (Flamsbana).

Among the newest cruise tourist attractions is the fully electric tour boat (launched in 2018) MS Future of the Fjords - LOA length 42 m (138 ft), with floor-ceiling windows and outdoor slanted promenades accessing all decks. The other large tour boat (hybrid vessel (Vision of the Fjords) is a hybrid ferry (running on LNG and MGO).

Main cruising season runs March through October. The harbor receives around 160 cruise ship calls per year. In recent years, cruise port's constant growth made it a year-round destination. In 2018, it scheduled 153 ship calls and ~250,000 passengers. For season 2019 were scheduled 159 ship calls (from the initially booked 176 berthings. SInce 2018, Port Flam limits cruise passengers' capacity to max 5,000 (in port at once).

In early-July 2020, ENOVA (2001-founded, Norwegian Government enterprise) granted to Port Flam NOK 27 million (EUR 2,53 million / USD 2,8 million) for building a shoreside power capability for passenger ships ( ferries and cruise vessels). The project includes laying of an underwater cable from Aurland Power Station (hydroelectric power station owned by E-CO Energi) directly to Flam. Project's total cost is NOK 83 million (EUR 7,77 M / USD 12,5 M). Shore-power supply allows docked ships to turn off their engines (while berthed), thus reducing Port Flam's emissions from passenger ships by 75%.

Flam cruise terminal

Large cruise ships to Flam dock on a wharf in the harbor area. The wharf is located at short walking distance from the port. Before the year 2000 (when the "cruise pier" was inaugurated), cruise vessels used to stay anchored on the fjord without reaching the port.

Occasionally, passengers are transported to the railway station via the ship's tender boats.

The port plans a cruise pier expansion (up to 160 m / 525 ft) and building new bollard (short post for mooring lines).

The Flam Line (Flamsbana) is a scenic railroad between Flam and Myrdal. The line is a branch of the Bergen Line (Bergensbanen), runs through the Flamsdalen valley and connects the mainline with Sognefjorden.

  • The line has 1 bridge, 20 tunnels and 10 stations.
  • The railroad's length is 20 km (13 ml), its elevation difference 863 m (2831 ft) and the max slope is 5,5%. The steep incline (1 to 18, fjord to mountaintop) and the amazing views of the passing unique countryside make the Flam Line Norway's 3rd most visited by tourists attraction.
  • Flam Line's departures are 10 per day during high tourist season (May through September) and 5 per day during the rest of the year.
