  • ahendren 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous Castle-BaggingTour Castle Bagging is Castle Hunting and there are about 300 castles in Aberdeenshire. Karl, our tour guide has taken people all over the UK and Europe and now he only takes people around his home turf in Scotland. Lucky for visitors to Aberdeen as Karl is unbelievably knowledgeable, only does small groups and makes sure every single person has a good time. Had lunch at Fraser Castle. Saw 5 castles, then Karl took us to a hidden castle ruin, way off the tourist trail, and a Pictish circle! An excellent tour with an excellent guide. He even knows where the pet cemeteries are. • ahendren 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous Small Group Tours Went on a lovely drive through the Highlands with stops at a very nice cafe and arrived at Loch Ness having been entertained and informed of everything we could ask by Karl, our great guide. Karl has been touring people around the UK and Europe for years and now sticks to his home county of Aberdeenshire. A true professional, Karl makes sure everyone in his groups is having a nice time. Took a boat to Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness, has time to climb around, went back, and had a lovely, informative ride through the Highlands back. No monsters tho! Read more Written 30 August 2019
  • Karen W 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Two great tours! We booked two tours - each on a different day. Our guide on both days was Carl. Carl was great!! Carl shared his knowledge of the area and took us to beautiful places. He went out of his way to make sure we were able to see things we were interested in seeing. He had great recommendations on meals. Can't say enough about how good Carl was as our guide. Read more Written 26 August 2019
  • Ming S 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Balmoral Castle tour Today, my husband and I did the Balmoral Castle tour. This was an excellent way to spend the day. It's about a 1.5 hour drive to the castle where our guide Carl filled us in with all kinds of stories and facts about the area. Once there, we explored the church and then headed to the castle. I loved that we had over 2.5 hours to explore the grounds on our own and still have plenty of time for lunch and a walk around the river. We chose the option of going to the distillery which was a quaint and personalized experience. We were also lucky enough to set the salmon jumping in the river. Overall, it was an excellent tour, loved our guide, the mix of sites was good, as was being with a very small group. Read more Written 25 July 2019

  • TammyB0416 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An incredible day seeing castles! I did a private tour with Karl (he does groups of no more than 8, but I booked him out for the day). I had a list of castles that had been recommended to me, and he reviewed it and I let him decide where to go. Which was a good idea. We stopped at a number of different, incredible castles - each with deep history that he knew a lot about. We also went to Old Aberdeen, stopped at some fantastic churches, a Stone Circle, a waterfall where we saw salmon trying to get upstream and through amazing country roads and breathtaking vistas. We finished the tour with some delicious ice cream at a lovely beachside spot. Carl had great insight into not just the history, but current status of the landowners, how the castles are maintained and he is an expert in identifying the local flora. It was a delightful day and I highly recommend using Karl and his service. Read more Written 16 July 2019

I had the pleasure to have Karl guide us to the Castle of Balmoral and there was not one single moment when this man was not unwinding stories of Scotland and its surroundings. He explained everything in a wonderful and lively storyteller manner. Absolutely worth the price. A must do when coming to Aberdeen. Read more Written 23 April 2019
  • Nicki M 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A mystery tour that did not disappoint Pick up point was by the information centre in Union Street. Karl was a great tour guide had a wealth of knowledge and a good sense of humour. He asked us before the tour what we would like to see so he had an idea where to go .The vehicle was very comfortable 6 people on trip nice number. Everywhere we went was beautiful scenery and was given time to take photos. We stopped for a break in Ballater for something to eat own expense ,we eat in Victoria's café had a lovely roast beef never tasted such flavours and beef melted in your mouth very reasonable. Moved on to other areas around Royal Deeside again great views. This time of year it gets dark quicker but the weather was kind to us enabling us to see what we saw .On return to Aberdeen it started to rain but it was dark so we did not miss anything Karl dropped us back at our hotel which helped us not get wet. It was a great trip and as we have not been to Aberdeen before it gave us an insight beyond Aberdeen. Read more Written 8 December 2018

We were hoping that they would guide us to all of the "must see sites and locations" in Aberdeen area. Our expectations were completely exceeded! Karl was a very knowledgeable guide who provided options for our agenda, local lore and interesting facts. He was extremely flexible and very patient with our many questions and the diverse interests of our group. He also willingly provided suggestions for additional items to see, do, and places to enjoy local libations on the days we were on our own. I would highly recommend Aberdeen Tours to anyone looking for a fantastic Scottish experience. On our Royal tour today we depart from Scotland's 3rd largest city, Aberdeen, and follow in the footsteps of Royalty to the Queen's holiday castle - Balmora l. The tour follows the River Dee as we head towards the castle and watch the rich agricultural landscape change to the mountains of the Highlands. We will experience the journey taken by the lady who put the "Royal" into Deeside, Queen Victoria . Her heart was captured by the Highlands and people continue to be enchanted today. Balmoral Castle was built in the 1800s by Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert and both worked closely with the architect, John Smith to create the home of their dreams. It has been a haven for our Royal family ever since. We can explore the grounds and visit the ballroom exhibition. Refreshments are available in the café and the gift shop offers the opportunity to find that unique gift or souvenir. After the castle tour we visit Crathie Kirk. This is the church where the Royals worship when staying at the castle. It has also been the venue for a Royal wedding as the Queen's daughter Anne was married here. Our lunch stop today is in the nearby village of Ballater . This is where the Royal family shop - evidenced by the largest display of Royal warrants outside of Windsor. There are many options for dining which is independent. Our return to Aberdeen takes us along the other side of the River Dee. We stop at the Falls of Feugh . If we are lucky we may see salmon leaping against the current of the rushing waters as they return to their spawning grounds after 7 years at sea. A cup of tea and a traditional Scottish scone with jam sends us on our way back to Aberdeen.

This is home to some of Scotland’s most brilliant creatives and is a showpiece of our talent for design, both current and historic, and how our design talent has made its mark within Scotland and throughout the rest of the world.

From here we will head onwards to Blairgowrie one of the largest towns in Perthshire, sitting to the north of the city of Perth on the banks of the River Ericht. This handsome market town was once known for its trade in flax and these days is known best for fruit growing activity (mainly raspberries).

Our tour reaches Balmoral Castle

We will then move further north over the Spittal of Glenshee where you will pass through the Glenshee Ski area and on to Balmoral. We will set aside at least one and a half hours for your visit to Balmoral. This will give you time to visit the grounds, gardens, exhibitions and shop.

Onward from Balmoral, we will visit Braemar, situated in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. This lovely village is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, beautiful glens and home to the ancient Braemar Gathering tradition. Known colloquially as The Games and originating from those believed to have been held by Malcolm III, annual Highland Games Gathering is held at Braemar in September and is traditionally attended by the British Royal Family.

This completes our fine day out in Royal Deeside heritage mixed with a twist of design exploration at the Dundee V&A.

11 whisky tasting experiences for Father’s Day across the north and north-east

Father's Day is on June 16, so raise a glass to your dad by treating him to a whisky tasting experience

Glen Garioch whisky

With Father’s Day not far away, the race is on to find that perfect gift, snack or beverage.

But what about something a little different which could possibly tick all the boxes? Whether you are looking to do something on the day or book a day to treat your dad to later – there’s plenty of places offering whisky tasting to choose from.

We have rounded up a handy list of some whisky tasting experiences available in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Highlands and Islands.

Amuse by Kevin Dalgleish, Aberdeen

Amuse run by Aberdeen chef, Kevin Dalgleish on Queen’s Terrace offers an “unforgettable” whisky experience . The restaurant, tucked away in the granite townhouse basement, has something to offer for whisky connoisseurs and beginners alike.

Boasting a curated selection of whiskies from around the globe, the establishment also provides a variety of incredible dishes to help make it a truly memorable occasion. Options for an Amuse whisky experience voucher start at £50.

For more information please email [email protected] or call 01224 611909.

CASC, Aberdeen

The concept bar CASC in the heart of Aberdeen’s Merchant Quarter focuses on cigars, craft beer, artisan coffee and whisky. The business on Stirling Street offers two hour whisky tasting sessions.

Whisky tasters would be taken through a selection of five of CASC’s finest whiskies with one of their connoisseurs. A specialised notebook will also be provided for each person attending.

A two hour whisky tasting session at CASC costs £50 per person. For more information visit the CASC website or call 01224 822222.

Glen Moray Distillery, Elgin

The only thing better than whisky tasting is surely whisky tasting with chocolate.

Centred in the heart of whisky country in Elgin, Glen Moray Distillery has been crafting the Scottish elixir for over 120 years.

These days, four Glen Moray whiskies can be enjoyed in the private tasting room at Glen Moray House with a selection of chocolates from Edinburgh-based chocolatier COCO for £50 per person.

With several tastings on offer, experiences start at £30 a head. For more information visit the Glen Moray Distillery website, email [email protected] or call  01343 550900.

Royal Lochnagar, Balmoral

For a truly royal experience, why not take a tour of Royal Lochnagar Distillery one mile from Balmoral Castle. Sat at the foot of the Cairngorm mountains, the distillery was originally called Lochnagar before it was renamed following a royal visit.

From tours with a few drams to a dedicated tasting session in the warehouse, the distillery in Royal Deeside combines the traditional pagoda kiln heads and techniques like the open mash tun with a whisky visitor centre to share the story of Royal Lochnagar and its malt whisky.

Tours start at £20 per person. To find out more visit malts.com

Duke of Rothesay, Prince Charles visited Royal Lochnagar Distillery, Crathie, Ballater. HRH meet operators at the distillery before touring the warehouse.

Tomatin Distillery, Inverness-shire

For somewhere further north with a lot of history, Tomatin Distillery in Inverness-shire is a good choice.

First established in 1897, it is a popular destination, boasting over 35,000 visitors in 2023 in a community which has rich whisky making traditions dating back to the 1500s.

The distillery produces single malt and blended Scotch whisky, six of which which can be sampled with a tutored “nosing and tasting” after a tour of the premises.

The Taste of Tomatin two hour tours are £40 per head. To find out more visit the Tomatin Distillery website.

Glen Garioch, Oldmeldrum

For one of Scotland’s oldest and most easterly distilleries, Glen Garioch in Oldmeldrum fits the bill.

Making malt in the Aberdeenshire town since 1797, the distillery offers a range of tasting experiences and Glen Garioch Highland Single Malt whiskies.

From bothy experiences to pairing drams with cheese to closed doors tour, there is something for everyone although it is best to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Events start at £20 per person. To find out more or to book a ticket, visit the Glen Garioch website .

The Glenlivet Distillery, Ballindalloch

For those looking to visit The Glenlivet near Ballindalloch for Father’s Day, they will not be the only ones celebrating a special occasion.

This year, the distillery is celebrating 200 years of being the original Speyside Single Malt. To mark the milestone, the Moray business is introducing new experiences, events and special bottle releases.

Among these is the 2024 The Original distillery tour. For £25 per person, visitors can find out more about the historic dram and meet the individuals who make it all happen.

To book tickets, visit the Glenlivet Distillery website or call 01340 821720

Cragganmore Whisky Distillery, Ballindalloch

Another popular Ballindalloch distillery is Cragganmore. Founded by Speyside legend Big John Smith, who chose the location for its plentiful spring water and connection to the Great Highland Railway line.

With its sister distillery Cardhu only a 15 minute drive away, the distillery has much to offer including guided tours followed by tutored tastings of three of Cragganmore’s finest Single Malt Whiskies.

Tours are £20 per person and can be booked at malts.com

Torabhaig, Isle of Skye

From former farm steading to working distillery, Torabhaig Distillery, whose parent company is Mossburn Distillers, on the Isle of Skye is certainly unique.

Only the second-ever licensed single malt Scotch whisky distillery on the Isle of Skye, the first release from Torabhaig, Legacy 1, was a complete sellout in 2021 .

Complete with a cafe and shop, visitors can book a tour of the distillery for a very reasonable price of £15. However, if sweet toothed hopefuls fancy something a little more indulgent, they can splash out on the £25 tasting and chocolate experience.

To book a tour, visit Torabhaig Distillery’s website  or call 01471 833447

Bunnahabhain Distillery, Islay

On the Isle of Islay, whisky lovers are not without choice. Boasting at least nine distilleries, a number which is set to increase, it is a haven for those wishing to try an array of flavours.

For those looking for something different, Bunnahabhain Distillery is one of the island’s most remote ones and is situated on the shore beside the Sound of Islay.

Reflecting its location, its malts are less peaty than others and reflect a unique blend. There are several tours and tastings on offer ranging in price from £30 per person to £275 a more mature and exclusive experience.

Tours are by appointment only and can be booked on the Bunnahabhain Distillery website or call 01496 840646 for more information.

Aberdeen Whisky Shop

The shop on Union Street has a range of whiskies to browse – and also offers tasting experiences.

Its tasting room has menus that offers a selection of three and five dram flights. The menu and prices are on the website. Vouchers for tasting room experiences can also be bought and prices start at £40.
