Climbing the Alpspitze Klettersteig | Via Ferrata Alpspitze

One of the highlights near the Bavarian town of Garmisch Partenkirchen is the Alpspitze Klettersteig that brings you to the summit of the mountain.

This Via Ferrata takes you from the top of the cable car station up to the Alpspitze summit at 2,628 meters / 8,622 feet high. Once you reach the summit, you can enjoy the endless mountainous landscape in every which direction before making the hike back down.

Read on for everything you need to know about the climb.

1) Alpspitze Klettersteig Overview

While there is a cable car that takes you up Alpspitze mountain, it does not reach the summit. The cable car takes you up to around 2,020 meters / 6,630 feet in elevation and from there you will need to do the rest on your own.

Climbing to the summit of Alpspitze can be broken down into two parts – first is the Klettersteig / Via Ferrata that starts just beyond the cable car station to the summit.

A Via Ferrata is essentially a fixed line route, where you must have special climbing equipment to clip into the line during the duration of the climb.

The second part of the day is the hike down from the summit back to the top cable car station (a different route than the Via Ferrata up).

The hike down is not easy as it is done on uneven slippery rocky terrain before flattening out as you approach the cable car station.

Alpspitze Ferrata Sign

» Note: from the cable car station to the starting point of the Via Ferrata, you will need to follow a 20-minute walking trail.

Klettersteig / Via Ferrata Portion

  • Route Name : Alpspitze Klettersteig
  • Route # : 7 (found on local hiking maps)
  • Length : 530 meters / 1,740 feet
  • Duration : 2 Hours
  • Difficulty : B (Easy)
  • Terrain : Rocks, Pegs, & Ladders

Hiking Portion

  • Route Name : Nordwandsteig -> Osterfelderkopf
  • Route # : 8 (found on local hiking maps)
  • Length : 2.5 km / 1.6 miles
  • Difficulty : Moderate
  • Terrain : Uneven, Steep & Rocky -> Flat & Rocky

Overall, you are looking at a day comprising of around 4-5 hours of Via Ferrata climbing and hiking. If you also consider the amount of time spent resting, taking photos, and enjoying the summit, you will need to add some additional time to your day on the mountain.

For those that want a bit different and more technical hiking experience, I feel as this day at Alpspitze is the perfect option.

It is a relatively easy Klettersteig route and at the same time gives you that thrill of mountaineering.

2) Alpspitzbahn Cable Car

While you can make the hike up to the starting point of the Via Ferrata from ground level, that will require an additional 1000+ meters of elevation gain.

Instead just head on over the Alpspitzbahn Cable Car Station. Be careful here, as there are actually two different cable cars that go up Alpspitze – the Alpspitzbahn and Kreuzeckbahn.

The Kreuzeckbahn takes you only about 75% of the way up while the Alpspitzbahn takes you to the main viewing platform, where you can begin the hike from. These two cable cars are right next to each other so just be certain when going on.

There is another mountain also called Alpspitze, which also has an Alpspitzbahn. The map below though has the correct points of interest for you to follow when planning your trip.

You can purchase what is called a Garmisch Classic Ticket for the day which costs 33.50 Euro round trip for adults, 27 Euro for ages 16-18, and 17 Euro for ages 6-15.

Alpspitze Map

Below you can find a map that includes all the necessary points of interest for the cable car and via ferrata.

Renting a Car : When it comes to car rentals, I would highly recommend checking out Rentalcars.com for potential options. By going through Rentalcars.com, you will have the chance to compare car prices among a variety of rental companies, and choose the best option for you.

3) Alpspitze Hiking Map

Below you can see the zoom in of the local Garmisch Partenkirchen hiking map that can be found at the cable car stations.

From the top of the Alpspitzbahn you will make the 20 minute walk towards the beginning of the Via Ferrata, where you can then take route #7 up the Ferrata Klettersteig.

Once you reach the Alpspitze summit you can take the #8 Nordwandsteig trail down the side of the mountain and then wrap back around to the cable car station.

4) Where to Stay in GP

The town of Garmisch Partenkirchen is full of hotels and guesthouses that are frequented both in the winter months for skiing and the summer months for hiking. Below are some highly rated options that you can choose from when visiting Alpspitze:

  • Luxury: Obermühle 4*S Boutique Resort | Hotel Zugspitze
  • Mid Range: Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten | Biohotel Garmischer Hof
  • Budget: Hostel der Athleten | moun10 Jugendherberge

→ You can hike Alpspitze as part of a longer Bavaria Itinerary

Biohotel Garmischer Hof

5) What to Bring on the Climb

There are three main pieces of Via Ferrata equipment you will need – 1) Climbing Harness 2) Via Ferrata Lanyard with Two Carabiners 3) Helmet. Also having gloves can be very helpful for your grip.

» Since most people don’t actually own this type of equipment, here is a link to a Via Ferrata Kit that has the three required items included. I would highly recommend you purchase your own equipment if you are looking to enjoy Via Ferratas during your travels.

On top of the gear, I would also recommend bringing along some hiking essentials.

Hiking Packing List In general when it comes to hiking, there are a few main aspects to consider. These includes clothing layers, hiking shoes, hydration & fuel, electronics, and other essentials. Below in a breakdown of some of the top items, but be sure to check out the Hiking Packing List for a more comprehensive view. Clothing Layers Layering is going to be a top consideration when hiking. You will want to be prepared for all sorts of weather so you can be comfortable in different situations. Some items may include: → Hiking Shorts → Hiking Pants → Short Sleeve Shirt → Long Sleeve Shirt / Sun Hoodie → Mid Layer Fleece → Puff Jacket (not always needed) → Packable Rain Jacket ( Columbia Watertight II ) Note that your layers should be made of moisture wicking material as they are breathable and quick drying. Footwear Having appropriate footwear will also be very important. You will want to have shoes with the necessary grip and support to keep you safe on the trail. → Hiking Shoes ( Keen Targhee ) → Hiking Socks ( Darn Tough ) Other Essentials Whether it is hiking gear, electronics, or just some miscellaneous items, here are some other essentials to bring along on hikes. → Hiking Backpack ( Osprey Talon 22 ) & Rain Cover ( Joy Walker Cover ) → Hiking Poles ( Black Diamond Trekking Poles ) → Water Bottle ( CamelBak Chute or Katadyn Filter Bottle ) → Portable Charger ( Anker PowerCore 5000mAh ) → Action Camera ( GoPro Hero ) → Energy Bars & Snacks → Hat & Sunglasses → Sunscreen & Bug Spray

6) Alpspitze Klettersteig

Once you arrive at the lower Alpspitzbahn station, you can park your car, purchase tickets, and take the quick ride up the mountain.

At the top station, you can enjoy the view from the AlpspiX viewing platform before following the signs towards the Alpspitze Klettersteig.

This will be an easy 20 minute walk away from the top station towards the starting point of the Via Ferrata route. As you are walking this route, you can see the cross way up above that sits on top of the Alpspitze summit.

Once you reach the steel rope, you can put on your gear, clip on your carabiners, and get ready for your climb up.

Alpspitze Mountain

I should note that while this is a Via Ferrata, you may find that many sections of the route are easy enough to complete without clipping on. So, depending on your experience and comfort level you may decide to clip in the entire time or just the more technical ones.

During the few first sections of trail you will be welcomed to some vertical ladder and peg climbs as you begin to get continuously higher.

When you are off those ladders and pegs, things get a bit easier as you are able to just hike normally from one section to the next.

Behind you will be the Alpspitzbahn station, the city of Garmisch Partenkirchen down below, and plenty more mountain peaks coming up all around you.

Alpspitze Klettersteig Ladder

As you continue to get higher you will also be able to get a glimpse of the top of Zugspitze and its viewing platform.

This is the highest point in all of Germany so if you are looking to head there too be sure to check out the Hiking Zugspitze Guide up on the site.

Alpspitze View of Zugspitze

The Via Ferrata route will continue with some back and forth sideways climbs, some rocky terrain, and some more vertical peg sections sprawled throughout.

The views will continually get vaster behind you as you get to see further and further out in the distance.

Alpspitze Via Ferrata Route

During the last bit of the route, you will have one more long ladder section to get yourself through before the summit cross begins to come into view. From there it is just a few more steps until you reach the summit of Alpspitze.

Klettersteig Route Alpspitze

7) The Summit

Before hiking back down, you will get to enjoy the 360 degree views from the top of Alpspitze. Once up top you not only will be able to see the views out in front of you but you now will be able to see the backside of the mountain and way into Austria.

It is a fantastic summit experience to have and I recommend taking your time to fully enjoy the top of the peak.

Alpspitze Summit

8) The Hike Down → Nordwandsteig → Osterfelderkopf

It is now time to make the treacherous hike back down to the cable car station. About half the trail is done on steeper rocky terrain with some ladder and rope sections as well, while the second half of the hike is more hiker friendly.

With your back towards the summit cross you will want to catch the trail on your left-hand side. There will be red markings on the rocks that will help you make the traverse down the mountain.

It can get pretty slippery in certain parts so take your time and watch your step as you are heading down.

Alpspitze Hiking Markers

At a certain point, the loose rocks will end and you will be welcomed to another fixed rope section. You don’t necessarily need to clip on here but you can do so if you feel like it’s necessary.

Alpspitze Hike Fixed Line

As you continue along be sure to follow the signs that say Nordwandsteig / Alpspitzbahn as there are some intersections here that can take you in various directions.

From here you will traverse the mountain on some easier and more navigable terrain. There will be one ladder section to head down followed by a tunnel built into the side of the mountain.

All you need to do is follow the path back towards the main platform area from the beginning of the day and you should be done in no time.

You can sit back and relax, and grab some food and drinks while taking in the view before heading back down the cable car to end a successful day on Alpspitze.

Bernadeinkopf

With that all said, I hope you now have a much better idea on how to conquer the Alpspitze Klettersteig on your own and you are all ready for your time in the Bavarian Alps.

Be sure to also check out some of the other things to do in Garmisch Partenkirchen during a visit.

If you have any questions or comments feel free to write them in below. Have fun out there and safe travels!

Hi! I’m doing this ferrata in a couple of weeks time, is there a map I can buy before hand as I’m nervous that the route down won’t be easy to follow and I do not want to get lost! Is the route down after the ferrata easy to follow? And do you know of a map that I can buy if not? Thank you, Anna

Hi Anna - I am not certain on purchasing a map but you can certainly download a navigation app like AllTrails or Maps.me. That way you will be able to navigate using GPS on your phone to be more certain on the route. I did not have much trouble following the route but I also did have the navigation app handy too. Enjoy the hike!

Alpspitz Ferrata

Alpspitze Ferrata with mountain guide

One of the most beautiful via ferratas of the Wetterstein mountains

The Alpspitze is the landmark of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Looking at the steep flank, it's hard to believe that it's relatively easy to climb via the picture-book side. But the via ferrata skilfully avoids all the steep steps and leads purposefully to the summit. Caution: On the descent via the east shoulder, there are still some airy climbing passages to come! In the morning, your mountain guide will meet you at the valley station of the Alpspitzbahn and check the necessary equipment with you.   You then complete the warm-up program with a short climbing passage on the half-hour hike to the ferrata. The technical, almost vertical crux (B) with many iron clamps is the entrance to the 600 m high steep flank. The route now climbs steadily up to the summit of the Alpspitze on well-secured paths. The ascent repeatedly offers breathtaking views of the green alpine pastures towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen and wonderful views of the Zugspitze or the Jubiläumsgrat. At the summit itself, you will be rewarded with beautiful distant views of the Wetterstein and Karwendel mountains and, in good visibility conditions, as far as Munich and the foothills of the Alps. alpspitz tour

"At 600 meters in altitude, the Alpspitz Ferrata is not a short via ferrata. It is more strenuous than it appears at first glance. There I like to take my guests on the rope at the one or other passage or I support them with breaks at the appropriate places. As is so often the case, the tour does not end at the summit. Full concentration is required again on the east ridge and further down on the north face climb. But as I said, I help my guests with the right tips, even with rope support if necessary."

Zustieg Klettersteig Alpspitze

alpspitz tour

The Alpspitzbahn takes you to the striking rock massif of the Alpspitze in around nine minutes. Directly on the Osterfeldkopf is a summit adventure trail and the Alpspix, a newly built viewing platform with glass fronts and a view 1000 metres down.

Different mountain and hiking tours start from the summit station.

In winter, the Alpspitzbahn is primarily used for skiing in the Classic area. From Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau, it is best to take the  RVO bus to Garmisch-Partenkirchen station and continue by local bus to the Alpspitzbahn. You can find up-to-date timetables and information at www.zugspitze.de .

Visiting The Alpspitze Mountain Peak by Cable Car and Hiking in Germany

Visiting The Alpspitze Mountain Peak by Cable Car and Hiking in Germany- The Alpspitze Cable Car, also known as Alpspitzbahn, is on the Alpspitze mountain, at 2,628 meters, in Bavaria, Germany. The mountain’s pyramidal peak is the symbol of Garmisch-Partenkirchen town.  Even though Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany, Alpspitze right next to it gets a ton of attention for its cable cars, stunning views, hikes and skiing.  This article will give you all you need to know, prices, times what to do at the top, hikes at the top to the bottom and much more about the Alpspitzbahn, Hochalmbahn and the Kreuzeckbahn cable cars.

Where To Stay

How to get there to the cable car station, the cable cars, time & costs, what to do at the top, our route (cable car + hike down), other hikes on alpspitze, other hikes in the area that you might like, what to bring, other things to do in the area, other articles you may be interested in.

alpspitz tour

The summer will give you better temperatures to be able to walk around more and enjoy the views with a more mild temperature. You can enjoy the restaurants and biergarten in the warmer months.

The winter will be colder, but if you are interested in skiing down from one of the highest points in Germany then this is perfect for you. Prices may vary for the winter season. Use this link to check winter season ski prices. I bet the mountain views are incredible from the top, covered in snow.

In either scenario make sure you go on a clear day. We had a good day at the top of Zugspitze but didn’t get lucky for a clear view at Alpspitze.  Not much to see if it’s cloudy the entire time you are there. I wouldn’t think it would be worth your money to go if you ant see anything.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is where we stayed when visiting Alpspitze. This was super close to getting to Alpspitze and an adorable ski town.  The town had many restaurants and shopping areas.   You can also visit this area very easily as a day trip from Munich or Innsbruck.  Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a great area. I would highly recommend staying a few days there as you can spend a full day on this mountain alone.

The Garmisch Partenkirchen areas can be accessed as a day trip from many other sightseeing locations in Germany and Italy.

About an 1 hour and 15 minute drive from Munich to the Garmisch Partenkirchen area.

About an 1 hour drive from Innsbruck to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area

Berchtesgaden

We came to stay in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area for a few days from Berchtesgaden, which was about a 2.5 hour drive.

The parking lot was free when we visited in 2018.  You can also use this parking lot to have access to the Hochalmbahn cable car as well.  The bottom of the Alpspitzbahn and Hochalmbahn are a walkable distance from each other.

By Public Transportation

There is a train from Munich to Garmisch Partenkirchen every hour.  For more information visit Deutsche Bahn or ÖBB .

You will get off at the Hausberg stop. From the train station you can walk around the base of the mountain through the field on the trail to the Alpspitzbahn, which would be about a 30 minute walk.  You can also hire a taxi.  The train station will be right by the Hausbergbahn Cable Car if not wanting to walk.  This cable car will take you to a mountain peak with a restaurant and hiking areas.  Read more about this cable car here.

The Cable Cars

Alpspitzbahn cable car .

The Alpspitzbahn Cable Car will take you up to 2050 meters to the Osterfelderkopf, the summit in Wetterstein range mountains.  At the top there is a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating to enjoy a small meal or beer.  There are also many hiking trails along with the AlpspiX overlooking viewing platforms.   This cable car will hold quite a few people up, so try to get a space by a window if you can.

Kreuzeckbahn Cable Car

This Kreuzeckbahn cable car station is located right by the Alpspitzbahn Cable Car, so you can make a loop and use the same parking lot if returning on the round trip ticket.  This cable car takes you up 1650 meters, so a little lower than the Alpspitzbahn.  There are hiking paths up to Alpspitzbahn and to Hochalmbahn to make a round trip in either direction.

Hochalmbahn

The Hochalmbahn cable car will lessen your hiking distance in between the Alpspitzbahn and Kreuzeckbahn cable cars.  The distance is not too long so I would recommend hiking in between these too if you can.  This cable car holds just enough for a small ground for a family.  Drinks and light fare might be found here as well.

AlpspiX Overlook Platform

AlpspiX or also called Aussichtsplattform is a viewing platform to see for miles over the Bavaria Alps. Just above the summit station of the Alpspitzbahn cable car, two steel beams form a floating X over a vertical drop of almost 1,000 meters.

Get a bite to eat and a German beer at their biergarten , they have some at almost every cable car station at the top of the mountain.

So many hiking trails to choose from, from short hikes, day hikes and over night hikes. Or even try out a via ferrata !

If going in the winter months you can ride up and ski down ! What a dream.

alpspitz tour

We decided to ride the cable car up and hike down, being that we went later in the afternoon.  We were not sure if we would be able to complete many hikes at the top and make the last car down.  So we decided to ride up Alpspitzbahn and hike down.  It ended up being the best way to see the mountain.  We got to see the top and walk over mountain peaks, see the valley and walk through wildflowers and cow pastures.  We hiked this route that we chose down, I think it would be even more amazing if we had a more clear day.

Length: 5.97 miles

Time: 4 hours

Difficulty: Intermediate

Elevation: 4,575 feet decent

Trailhead: Top of Alpspitzebahn Cable Car Platform

Since it was evening with chances of light showers we got started pretty much right away after getting off of Alpspitzebahn.  We did take a few minutes to check out the overlooks at AlpspiX.  It was foggy and cloudy so we didn’t see a thing, that’s when checking the weather for the best day helps.

After those over looks we got on our way to Hupfleitenjoch.

Hupfleitenjoch

We didn’t start this route normally, we actually took a side trail to see Hupfleitenjoch.  We saw this spot on the way up in the cable car and thought it looked like a cool overlook.  Glad we took this route, it was a great spot and a perfect place for a snack break before the trek down the mountain.  After this we took the same loop back up to the Hochalmbahn station to start the rest of the trek down.

Hochalmweg Trail

After we made our way back up to the Hochalmweg Trail, making a loop. This trail is a very well maintained path, many use this trail to connect to the Kreuzeckbahn cable car station.  So widely used and heavily trafficked.

Kreuzeckbahn

If going during the day the Kreuzeckbahn cable car station has a great restaurant and hiking area as well. From here we stated our major descent down the mountain to the bottom. Hiking mostly under the cable cars, weaving in a out of the forests and meadows. I believe this was mostly under the Kandahar-Abfahrt cars.

As we got to the bottom we came close to many different cow pastures and the cows walking through the woods. The trail also started to become steeps with lose gravel, this is where my hiking poles definitely came in handy.

Eventually we came out of the woods and could see the parking lot and cable car station at the bottom.

alpspitz tour

There are so many hikes at the top of Alpspitze. Check out their site to find come various ones. You can choose to leisurely walk around the tops and seeing the viewing platforms. Or do a hike like us from top to bottom. You can even hike to Zugsptize !

Visit Zugspitze

You will be so close to the highest peak in Germany! And could drink a beer at the high biergarten in the world! Check out everything to know about the Zugspitze Cable Cars and Viewing Platforms .

Hike/Walk Around Lake Eibsee

We paired our trip to Zugspitze with a hike around Lake Eibsee in the afternoon.  This leisurely walk took about 90 minutes. Very much worth the stop at Lake Eibsee.

Via Ferrata

If you love a good adrenaline rush check out via ferratas, or also known as Klettersteigs. They are a fix rope hike, we did the Grunstein Klettersteig near Berchtesgarten. If staying in this area only check out the Alpspitz Ferrata .

Partnachklamm Gorge Hike

Visit the Partnachklamm Gorge . Unfortunately this was closed when we went due to a landslide. But it looks like a beautiful hike, and they have other hikes to biergartens in this area.

alpspitz tour

Snacks : we like jerky sticks, a peanut butter sandwich, granola bars, and trailmix to bring on our hikes.

alpspitz tour

Hat/sunglasses: not much shade at the top of the trail.

Visit The Town

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is such a great ski town, with lots of restaurant options. Along with some bars, lots of shopping and adorable bed and breakfasts.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle is about an hour drive from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. You can tour or hike around this 19th century castle. We paired their with a trip to Andech’s Brewery for a full day trip.

Andech’s Monk Brewery

Visit Germany’s Monk Brewery for some cold brews and delicious classic German food.  This is about an one hour drive from the Garmisch Area.

Hilter’s Eagle’s Nest

Another day trip would be to see the historic site of Hitler’s Eagles Nes t. This is near Berchtesgaden, Germany. You could also pair this day trip to see the town, Lake Konigssee or even Halstatt.

Lake Konigssee

This lake is absolutely stunning! It is about a 2.5 hour drive from Garmisch. I would highly recommend a day to see this lake and complete a few short hikes around it.

Ski tour: Alpspitze from Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Logo Outdooractive Editors

Explanation

Orientation is easy when visibility is good and there are tracks. With poor visibility and no tracks, however, it quickly becomes a challenge between the Stuibensee and the summit. In total, there are about 1100 metres of ascent. The Kreuzalm and Hochalm offer two places to stop for refreshments on the descent.
