Simple Flying

A brief guide to alaska airlines' baggage policy.

An overview of Alaska Airlines' baggage policy before the next time you fly.

Perhaps you are getting away to take in the wonderful magnificence in nature of the last frontier, or you are simply catching a ride to somewhere in the United States after arriving on an international flight to Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA). Either way, you are going to have baggage.

While the amenities offered and any points you might earn on the one world alliance member might be able to handle any emotional baggage you might have, Alaska Airlines has distinct rules and guidelines for all the items you bring with you. Here is an overview.

Like many carriers, Alaska Airlines will allow you to have one carry-on bag plus one personal item free of charge. For Alaska Airlines’ purposes, that personal item would include a laptop, purse, or briefcase. In any case, full flights, or flights with smaller regional aircraft, may demand consolidation of bags and personal items prior to boarding.

Carry-on size rules

For carry-on items, Alaska recently changed its limit to 22” x 14” x 9”, including any handles and wheels related to the item. When passengers are flying on aircraft operated by Horizon Air and SkyWest (Bombardier Q400s or CRJs), they may have to check bags planeside before boarding.

Planeside-checked items will be offloaded and returned to passengers within five minutes of deplane their aircraft at their destinations, according to Alaska Airlines . At some airports, the exact procedure will change, so it’s advisable to listen to cabin crew for any instructions.

There are always exceptions to any rule, and Alaska Airlines will allow carry-on items that exceed the size limitations as long as they can be safely stored in the aircraft. These items include human organs, art, paintings, delicate scientific equipment, fishing poles, and small musical instruments. Alaska Airlines additionally offers free downloadable ID tags for carry-on baggage.

Baggage fees

Alaska Airlines recently changed its baggage fees, and, as of January 2nd, 2024, the airline charges $30 for the first checked bag and $40 for the second checked item, with any item in addition to the first two checked items costing $150 each. Alaska Airlines passengers can check strollers and car seats for no extra charge.

Additionally, Alaska Airlines passengers are allowed to bring one properly packaged box of pineapples from Honolulu (HNL), Kona (KOA), Maui (OGG), and Kauai (LIH) for no fee.

However, customers traveling in first class, Elite Mileage Plan members, oneworld Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald members, and Club 49 members all get their first two bags free. Alaska Airlines Visa cardholders may get their first bag free with certain restrictions. one world Emerald and MVP Gold 75K members get a third free bag.

Checked bag policy

For Alaska Airlines, checked items are expected to be 13” by 24” by 15” or less. Overweight items, which are items between 51-100 lbs, cost $100 to check, while oversized items with dimensions of 63”-115” are $150.

Personal item size guide

There isn't much in the way of description for the size allowed when it comes to personal items. However, Alaska Airlines gives some examples, including FAA-approved child restraints, a reasonable amount of reading material, and food for immediate consumption. Pillows, coats, hats, and umbrellas all qualify as personal items as well.

Seasonal limits

Alaska Airlines has some seasonal limits for its baggage policies. The airline restricts passengers to no more than two checked bags per person year-round on all flights to and from Barrow (BRW), Bethel (BET), Dillingham (DLG), Kotzebue (OTZ), King Salmon (AKN), Nome (OME), and Kodiak (ADQ) in Alaska.

From November 15th to March 1st, Alaska Airlines has a limit of one checked bag per person on all flights to and from Billings (BIL) and Bozeman (BZN). Kalispell (FCA) also has a limit of one checked bag per person from November 15th to March 1st, and Kelowna (YLW) has the same limitation through March 31st

Alaska Airlines Carry On Size, Fees & Limits: Everything You Need To Know

posted by James Brockbank on July 24, 2022 // last updated on July 24, 2022

Packing for a trip is exciting until you realize that you might need more weight or space than you thought. So, if you’re traveling with Alaska Airlines and are trying to bring everything in a carry-on bag, or if you’ve used every last inch of luggage allowance among your bags, it might get you wondering about their carry-on policy.

If so, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll give you the Alaska Airlines carry-on size low-down so that you can have a smooth experience and don’t get hit with unexpected fees.

Carry-On Size Allowance on Alaska Airlines

Alaska airlines baggage fees, what can you pack in an alaska airlines carry-on bag, what can’t you pack in an alaska airlines carry-on bag, non-traditional luggage that counts as a carry-on, luggage that doesn’t count as a carry-on, understanding battery policies, a note on pets as carry-ons, are you ready to fly with alaska airlines.

Let’s start with defining what a carry-on bag is. Technically, a carry-on is a larger bag that fits in the overhead bin above your seat. However, many people refer to “carry-on” as both the textbook version of a carry-on suitcase and a personal item, a smaller bag you can bring on the plane that fits beneath your seat.

Alaska Airlines allows all passengers to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item, regardless of the type of ticket you book. Below are the maximum dimensions these bags can have:

  • Carry-on : 22” x 14” x 9”
  • Personal item : The size of a purse, briefcase, or laptop

Take note that for the carry-on size, the dimensions include the handles and wheels, and they can’t add up to more than 45 inches. We recommend measuring any soft-sided carry-on bags after you pack them, for they might exceed Alaska Airlines’ carry-on limit depending on how much you stuff them.

Alaska Airlines doesn’t say that the bag must be within a certain weight. However, you should be able to lift your carry-on bag over your head to put it in the bin.

alaska airlines travel size liquids

All passengers can bring one carry-on and one personal item on Alaska Airlines for free.

But if you need to travel with more luggage, fees will apply for most passengers. For example, you’ll need to pay $30 for your first checked bag up to 50 pounds, $40 for a second checked bag, and $100 for each bag after that.

That said, if you’re in the U.S. military, have an Alaska Airlines credit card, or are an Elite plan member, you’ll have a baggage fee waiver.

Items Exempt From Fees

When you travel with Alaska Airlines, you can bring certain items up to the gate as if they were a carry-on. Then, they’ll check the items for free at the gate (versus at the check-in counter). Examples of these free items include:

  • Mobility aids

Given the Alaska Airlines carry-on size, you won’t be able to pack everything and the kitchen sink, but you can bring many items. Examples of things safe to bring in a carry-on bag include:

  • Electronics
  • E-cigarettes
  • Small liquids
  • Batteries (restrictions apply that we’ll talk about soon)

alaska airlines travel size liquids

A Note on Carry-On Liquids

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), passengers can bring one quart-sized bag of liquids onto the plane with them. The beverages must be in individual containers of no more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) each.

Items that count as liquids include:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner

That said, this restriction is placed on items before you pass through security. Once you go through the airport security screening, you’re free to purchase drinks inside the terminal and carry them on the plane with you.

Furthermore, you can buy alcohol once you pass through security. However, it must remain in a TSA-approved sealed bag until you arrive at your final destination.

Aside from items larger than the Alaska Airline’s carry-on limit, you’ll need to take care not to pack the following items in your carry-on bag. Some are intuitive, while others are easy to let go under the radar accidentally.

Examples of items you can’t pack in your carry-on bag include:

  • Weapons of other kinds (including axes and hatchets)
  • Alcohol over 140 proof
  • Baseball bats
  • Wallet chains
  • Scissors larger than four inches from the pivot point
  • Razor blades that aren’t in their cartridge

We encourage you to hold back if you want to bring any of these items on board and are on the brink of giving Alaska Airlines a hard time about it. TSA makes these rules , so it’s out of Alaska Airlines’ hands.

alaska airlines travel size liquids

Although it seems Alaska Airlines’ carry-on size restrictions are strict, they do offer some leniency. As long as you can reasonably store the following items in the aircraft cabin, you can carry them on board with you even if they exceed the standard dimensions.

  • Paintings and other art
  • Advertising portfolios
  • Human organs
  • Fishing poles
  • Small musical instruments
  • Scientific equipment

That said, keep in mind that these items replace the standard carry-on bag you’re usually able to take on the plane with you. So, plan accordingly.

Although it can feel that airlines are constantly making new, more restrictive rules, Alaska Airlines permits several items on board that don’t have to count towards your carry-on size allowance.

These items include:

  • Service animals
  • Prescription medicine
  • Coats, hats, and umbrellas
  • Child seats (must have FAA approval )
  • Mobility and medical assistive devices
  • Food and drinks purchased at the airport for immediate consumption

If you’re not a frequent traveler, batteries aren’t an intuitive luggage piece to think about. However, they have the potential to explode or start a fire, so you must follow Alaska Airlines’ policy regarding them.

Batteries Allowed in a Carry-On Bag

Luckily, you’ll have the most flexibility for carrying batteries on a plane compared to checking them under the plane. Following TSA’s guidelines, you can bring the following types of batteries in your carry-on, either installed in your device or as free-floating spares:

  • Small lithium-ion batteries (100 or fewer watt-hours)
  • Larger lithium-ion batteries (100 – 160 watt-hours)
  • Lithium metal

Smart Bag Batteries

Smart bags, which have a charging device or lithium battery, are growing in popularity, but there are restrictions around using them as your carry-on bag.

You must be able to remove the battery from your carry-on bag without a tool. Otherwise, Alaska Airlines won’t accept it as a carry-on or checked bag.

Drone Batteries

You’re welcome to check or carry on an appropriately-sized drone onto an Alaska Airlines flight. However, if you check a drone, you must remove the batteries and carry them on the plane with you.

Stroller Batteries

If you have a battery-operated self-folding stroller, you must remove the battery first. Otherwise, the airline attendants won’t accept it. Then, you’ll need to tuck the battery in your carry-on bag or personal item until you deboard the plane.

Self-Balancing Devices

If you have a hoverboard, glider, electric unicycle, or another motorized board that’s for pleasure that uses lithium or lithium-ion batteries, you won’t be able to take them on your Alaska Airlines flight. That’s because these aren’t personal electronic devices unless you can prove that you use them as a mobility aid.

Other Carry-On Battery Items

If you still own a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 or the older generation 15-MacBook Pro laptop, you can’t travel with these devices as a carry-on or check-through. That’s because they’re a fire safety risk, as there are numerous events where they overheated.

alaska airlines travel size liquids

Service animals with their proper documentation never count as a carry-on. However, if you want to take a pet on an Alaska Airlines flight with you, you’ll need to prepare accordingly.

Every Alaskan Airlines flight allows one carry-on pet in the First Class cabin and five pets in the Main Cabin. Your pet carrier counts as either your carry-on bag or personal item. So, you can’t board the plane with a pet carrier, carry-on, and personal item.

Alaska Airlines permits the following pets as a carry-on:

  • Household birds

Many more regulations around bringing your pet onboard exist, so we encourage you to check out Alaska Airlines’ pet page for more details.

But for now, know that your pet’s carrier can be hard or soft-sided. Soft-sided carriers have two extra inches of wiggle room, as the maximum dimensions permitted are 17” x 11” x 9.5”. In contrast, Hard-sided carriers have the smaller dimensions of 17” x 11” x 7.5”.

Alaska Airlines has a carry-on size policy in line with industry standards. Before we leave you to pack your bag, though, we encourage you to label it with your contact information.

Although it’s less likely that your carry-on bag will become lost compared to checked luggage, it’s easy to accidentally leave it behind when you’re in the airport terminal juggling kids, coffee, and more.

So, if you don’t already have an identification tag on your carry-on, you can download Alaska Airlines’ baggage ID tag for peace of mind.

TSA Liquid Rule for Carry-on Bags (100 ml or 3.4 oz)

The TSA Liquids Rule for Carry-on Bags (3.4 ounces)

Tsa 3-1-1 rule, exceptions to the tsa liquids rule, tsa liquids rule for precheck, does tsa consider makeup a liquid, converting 3.4 oz to ml – how many ml is 3.4 ounces, what does 3.4 oz (100 ml) look like, converting 100 ml to oz – how many oz are in 100 ml, 100 ml to cups, 100ml bottle size – how big is a 100ml bottle, wrapping up: tsa liquids policy, more carry-on content:.

Before you finish packing to head to the airport, always double-check your carry-on bags and make sure you don’t have any bottles or other items that don’t comply with the TSA liquids rule, (known as the 3-1-1 rule).

By the time the TSA finds that expensive bottle of perfume or lotion in your bag, it’s too late and you’ll have to say goodbye and hand it over to get through security and board your plane on time.  It’s happened to my family many times and could easily have been avoided with a quick check before leaving.

To help make sure this doesn’t happen to you, we’ve created this article that will tell you everything you need to know about the TSA liquids rule, including how much liquid is 100 ml, what are travel-sized bottles, what is considered a liquid, etc. Basically, all the stuff that could get confiscated when making your way through airport security.

What’s the TSA Liquids Rule?

The TSA liquids rule states that you can bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, creams, gels, and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the airport security checkpoint. However, you are limited to containers that are travel sized and contain less than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) per item.

TSA Liquids 3.4 oz or 100 ml

Items that are in packages or bottles larger than 100 milliliters (or 3.4 ounces) will have to go in your checked luggage .  In addition to larger liquids, any liquid that is more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml and is not contained in a secure, tamper-proof bag must be packed in your checked luggage.

Each liquid must be in a 3.4-ounce or less container (“3”), all containers must be placed inside one clear quart-sized plastic bag (“1”), and each passenger is only allowed one plastic bag (“1”).

TSA 3-1-1 Rule

There are 2 exceptions to the TSA 3-1-1 Liquids Rule

  • Medications, and
  • Infant/Child nourishment

Medications larger than 100ml

TSA allows larger-sized packages of medical liquids, gels, and aerosols in your carry-on. This also includes medical accessories such as freezer bags, pumps, syringes, etc. These items do not have to be in a plastic zip lock bag, but you will have to declare these items to TSA officers at the checkpoint prior to inspection.

Here’s a video that provides all the details you need about traveling with medication.

Formula, Breast Milk, and Juice

Formula, breast milk, and juice for infants and toddlers are allowed through the security checkpoint. These can be in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters and are allowed in carry-on baggage.

Similar to medications, just inform the TSA officer of what you have and remove the items from your carry-on bag so they can be screened separately from the rest of your belongings.

Ice packs, freezer bags, frozen gel packs, and other accessories required to cool formula and breast milk are allowed in your carry-on bag.

The TSA PreCheck Program allows registered travelers the ability to go through expedited screening lines at over 200 participating U.S. airports with over 80 participating airlines. Once you are approved in the program you don’t need to remove your 3-1-1 liquids from your bag.

TSA Pre-check liquids rule 100 ml

Actually, you can avoid removing any of the following items during the screening process:

  • 3-1-1 compliant bag
  • Light jacket/Sport coat/outerwear
  • Laptop / iPad from bag

To apply for PreCheck, go to tsa.gov/precheck . From here you can enroll and make an appointment online or walk in at any one of over 380 enrollment centers . It can take up to 30 days to obtain a TSA PreCheck known traveler number.

What does TSA consider a liquid?

According to TSA guidelines, any substance that is free-flowing or viscous is considered a liquid. This includes liquids, aerosols, pastes, creams, and gels.

According to the TSA, “Makeup in a solid or powder form is allowed in carry-on and checked bags with no quantity or size limitations. However, when packed in carry-on bags, makeup in a liquid, lotion, gel, paste, or creamy form, must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less. You can take as many travel-sized liquids as you can comfortably fit into one quart-sized, zip-top bag.”

When it comes to makeup, the following are some examples of liquid cosmetics:

  • Nail polish,
  • Moisturizers,
  • Foundation,
  • Mascara, etc.

How much is 3.4 oz?

Now that you understand the basic concepts of the TSA liquid rule, it may help to have an idea of what constitutes 3.4 oz or 100 ml, since most people don’t naturally know how big a 3.4-ounce container or a 100 ml bottle is.

So if you’re wondering exactly how much is 3.4 oz or how big is a 100 ml bottle, we will walk through that for you here.

3.4 ounces (oz) converts to 96.388 milliliters (ml). For purposes of simplicity, the TSA rounds this up to 100 ml

travel size toiletries less than 100 ml or 3.4 oz

Most of the toiletries you would bring on a trip come in travel-sized packages that can be bought at any drug store or grocery store. These travel-sized items are typically 3 ounces (90 ml) and generally provide enough lotion, shampoo, or toothpaste for a 5-day trip. If you’ll be traveling longer, you may need to stock up on a couple of extra bottles or plan on purchasing more upon arrival at your destination.

100 milliliters (ml) converts to 3.3814 ounces (oz). For purposes of simplicity, the TSA rounds this up to 100 ml

100 milliliters (ml) converts to .422675 cups, so it’s just under 1/2 cup.

how many cups are in 100 ml?

A 100 ml bottle is fairly small. To give you a visual, look at the image below that shows a 500 ml water bottle vs. a 100 ml spray bottle. The 100 ml bottle is about 3 inches tall and the water bottle is about 8 inches tall.

how big is 100 ml bottle

Hopefully, this guide will give you a better idea of what the TSA considers a liquid and what size they will let you bring on your carry-on. Knowing this information in advance can save a lot of headaches at the airport!

Alaska Airline's Carry-On Rules (Exact Size & Weight Limits)

"Get all the details on Alaska Airlines' carry-on size & weight limits before you fly! Perfect for travelers needing clear carry-on guidelines."

alaska airlines travel size liquids

Alaska Airlines is a prominent airline company based in the American Northwest. This company offers reasonable flights around the US as well as internationally. If you are a first-time flyer with this airline, it's best to understand their baggage policies before your flight! Some aspects of baggage restrictions are the same across all airlines, while others are specific to each company.

Alaska Airlines carry-on bags must not exceed the dimensions of 22" x 14" x 9" or 45 linear inches. The carry-on bag and personal items are free of charge. Your carry-on must weigh less than 50 pounds. You are allowed one personal item, such as a purse or backpack, and one carry-on item per person.

If you are traveling with clothes and toiletries in your small carry-on and a backpack with personal items, you should not run into problems during your travels. Just be sure your personal item can fit under your seat and your carry-on is not too big. There are certain restrictions for large checked baggage and particular hazardous items packed in your carry-on. Follow along to fully understand the rules and regulations for baggage with Alaska Airlines!

What Is The Carry-on Policy For Alaska Airlines?

alaska airlines travel size liquids

For carry-on luggage on Alaska Airlines, each passenger is allowed to bring a personal item and a carry-on on the plane for free ! Your carry-on time must not exceed 45 linear inches, including the handle and wheels. This means that the length, width, and height measurements of your carry-on when added can not be over 45-inches. Typically, this means the measurements should be roughly 22'' x 14'' x 9'' inches.

You are allowed a free personal item with Alaska Airlines! The personal item must be small enough to fit underneath the seat in front of you. This includes backpacks, purses, and other small bags. There are no restrictions to your personal item other than it must be small enough to bit under the seat.

For those looking to check their bags, certain fees increase with the number of bags checked. Generally speaking, checking one bag under 45 kilograms will cost about $30. If your luggage is overweight or oversize, there will be variable fees per bag. These fees depend both on weight and size categories. There are other prices for special luggage.

Overall, the guidelines for Alaska Airlines luggage are standard for the industry. The free carry-on is a great perk with this airline and the size is not too restrictive. Just be sure to measure your carry-on and personal item before the flight and you should have no issues. If you have special items like large luggage, golf clubs, or a wheelchair you will not have to pay an extra fee to check those onto the plane.

What Are The Size Limitations For Alaska Airlines?

The size limitations for Alaska Airlines are more strict with carry-ons than checked bags. You want to make sure your bag does not get denied at the gate. Making sure you have the right sizes can save you a lot of stress and hassle from the beginning. Ensuring you have a smooth and relaxing travel experience. Carry-on size limits tend to be universal across all airlines, but here are the specifications for Alaska Airlines.

The carry-on bag size limit for Alaska Airlines is 22'' x 14'' x 9'' inches and must include wheels and handles. When added up, these measurements must not exceed the number of 45 to judge the linear inches. This allows people with individual bags with slightly different measurements to bring their carry-on with them.

For your checked bag, you want to make sure it is not larger than 62 linear inches. Just use the same measuring principles as the carry-on! By measuring the length, width, and height of your checked bag and adding those numbers together you will know the linear measurements. Knowing this will prevent you from having to pay oversized fees at the ticket counter.

What Are The Weight Limitations For Alaska Airlines?

Weight is not the most regulated measurement for carry-on bags. Generally, carry-ons are not supposed to exceed 50 lbs. But for those who pack the usual clothes and toiletries, it is unlikely you will reach that limit.

Travelers rarely run into scales to measure the weight of the carry-ons because the sizing dimensions are much more important. You simply must be able to live the suitcase over your head into the bins above the seats.

As for checked baggage, your suitcase must not weigh more than 45 kilograms or 50 pounds . If your bag is over this weight you will have to pay at least an extra $100 at the counter. The more overweight the bag is the more fees will apply. This fee is the same regardless of how many pounds over the limit you are.

But if you pay the fee they will still carry it for you.  If you have special baggage you want to fly with, such as a bike or golf clubs, those are often not subject to these fees on Alaska Airlines if it is on their list of exception items.

How Strict Is Alaska Airlines With Carry-On Size?

alaska airlines travel size liquids

Alaska Airlines is quite strict with the sizing limitations of its carry-on policy, as do most airlines. This is because if your luggage is larger than the set dimensions, it may not fit in the overhead bin. Which would cause many complications during the boarding process, and it is a fiasco you do not want to be responsible for. Additionally, if your luggage barely fits it will take away the ability of others to store their carry-on.

However, the weight limitations of Alaska Airlines are a bit more flexible than the size limitations for carry-ons. You likely will not come across as a scale to measure the weight of your carry-on. So it does not necessarily need to be under 50 pounds. Of course, this is still highly recommended because you will be required to lift the bag over your head to store it during the flight.

In terms of the number of carry-on items allowed in Alaska Airlines' policy, they are quite strict as well. You will never be allowed to bring on multiple carry-ons or personal items. There simply is not space for everyone to have three or more bags, so you are only allowed the carry-on and personal items. Attempting to push this limit could result in you leaving the extra bag behind. It also could mean you will not be allowed on the plane.

What Are Alaska Airlines Baggage Restrictions?

alaska airlines travel size liquids

The baggage restrictions for Alaskan Airlines are relatively standard. There are basic limitations for personal items, carry-ons, checked luggage, and special baggage. The personal item must be small enough to fit underneath the seat in front of you and not contain any hazardous items. You can keep entertainment, snacks, small pillows, and any other TSA-approved items in this personal bag.

The restrictions for carry-on items are largely related to size. The dimensions of the bag must not exceed 45 linear inches and can not contain hazardous materials that are such as flammable chemicals or weapons. The carry-on can be a soft/hard suitcase or a duffel bag, but can not be heavier than 50 pounds. Carry-ons are also fee-free for every passenger.

Checked bags can not be larger than 62 linear inches or be heavier than 50 pounds if you want to avoid extra fees. If you go over the weight or dimensions you will have to pay an extra $100 for the bag, unless you are checking an item on their fee exceptions list. You are able to pack more dangerous items in your checked bag versus your carry-on such as certain firearms, machines, and chemicals.

What Is Allowed In a Carry-On For Alaska Airlines?

alaska airlines travel size liquids

Alaska Airlines largely outlines what you are not allowed to bring on your carry-on, rather than what you can. You can pretty much pack anything you would like into your carry-on.  As long as you do not have any dangerous explosives, lighters, drugs, weapons, or flammable items.

However, as many travelers can report accidents can happen! Some travelers forget there are possible dangers in their bags. Simple items like a screwdriver, corkscrew, mini hairspray bottle, or a pack of lighters in your carry-on will get flagged at TSA and be confiscated. 3. Give yourself time.

Get to the airport at least two hours before your domestic flight departs, and three hours before your international flight. This should give you plenty of time to park, see one of our agents, check your bags and make your way through security.

Visit our airport guides  before your trip for recommended arrival times, ticket counter hours, airport services and more. Remember: We begin boarding flights 30 minutes before takeoff.

4. Enroll in a Trusted Traveler program.

Save time through security with SEA Spot Saver , a reservation program to get you through the security process quicker in Seattle. Similar spot saver programs are also at CHS, EWR, MCO, PHX, YYC.

You can also enroll in a  trusted traveler program like  TSA Pre✓ ® , Global Entry , Nexus , or SENTRI . Membership in these programs gives you access to dedicated TSA Pre✓ ® lanes at more than 200 airports nationwide.

5. Save time by checking your bags

You’ll likely make it through the security line quicker by checking your bags. You can pay for your bags in the mobile app, and print bag tags by simply scanning your boarding pass at an airport kiosk—if you’re flying out of San Jose , look for our tablets in the lobby.

Before you go, brush up on our  checked baggage policy  to save time at the airport. To make your vacation even more fun, you can bring most sports equipment for the cost of a checked bag. (Be sure to check the approved list of equipment .)

As a reminder, Alaska has a 20-minute baggage claim guarantee.

6. Follow the carry-on guidelines.

To ensure your carry-on bag will be accepted aboard all flights on your journey, we’ve changed our carry-on size limit  to 22″ x 14″ x 9”. When measuring your bag, be sure to include the wheels, handle and expandable pockets in the total measurement.

You are allowed one carry-on bag, plus one smaller personal item. TSA allows you to carry on one quart-sized bag of liquids – aerosols, gels, creams and pastes that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Keep the liquids bag easily accessible, so that it’s simple for you to drop it into the security bin without digging through your carry-on bag at the checkpoint.

More questions? Read our guidelines for carry-on baggage . Also, don’t pack your carry-on bag too full, as densely packed, cluttered bags take longer to scan and screen at the security checkpoint.

7. Simplify going through security.

To breeze through the security line try this:

  • Have your boarding pass and ID ready to hand to screening agents.
  • Remove any outerwear, belts with metal buckles, larger metal jewelry and accessories, and the contents of your pockets. Secure these items in your carry-on bag before putting them through the X-ray tunnel or find a small bin to place them into.
  • In general screening lanes, remove electronic devices larger than a cell phone—including laptops, tablets, e-readers and handheld game consoles—and place in a bin for screening. Cell phones can stay secured in your carry-on bag.
  • In general screening lanes, place the one quart-sized bag of liquids, gels and aerosols in a bin by itself for x-ray screening. Doing this will allow the TSA officer to get a clear view of the items to ensure they don’t pose a security risk.
  • Wear shoes that are easily removable or untie/loosen shoelaces if you can.
  • Once your bags and bin have gone through the X-ray, be sure to retrieve all of your personal property. Take your items to a nearby bench or chair. You’ll have more time to gather/repack your items, while allowing those behind you to do the same.

8. Know what to leave behind.

As you pack, reference the  prohibited and restricted items checklist , and make sure you know what’s in your suitcase. You can also use the “Can I bring?” feature on TSA’s app, MyTSA, to learn whether an item is allowed in carry-on baggage, checked luggage or if it should be left at home.

If you’re heading on an outdoor adventure, certain items are prohibited from checked and carry-on bags because they are considered dangerous goods. Don’t pack camping stoves with the residue of flammable liquid, bear repellant, fuel (white gas, propane, sterno, etc.), lighters, matches or wet ice.

Be especially aware of restrictions regarding  lithium ion batteries , and devices that use them, including phones, cameras, e-cigarettes, drones, hoverboards and smart luggage/e-bags. If you plan to check a smart bag, the lithium battery must be removed and carried on the plane.

9. Kiddos can travel solo.

If you have kids who will be flying by themselves, visit our  site to learn about how to book their flights, download the required forms, and discover the different types of care we offer kids of all ages.

To expedite the process, fill out the Guardian Contact Form before arriving at the airport. This will ensure the safety of your child.

Be sure to allow extra time for check-in and plan on staying in the boarding area until the flight departs.

10. Plan ahead for pet travel.

alaska airlines travel size liquids

Be sure to familiarize yourself with our  pet travel policies well before you fly. An important note: pets cannot travel in the baggage compartment or in the First Class cabin on Airbus aircraft, which are flight numbers 1000-1999.

Feeling the summer heat? For the welfare of your pet, we may have to deny transportation of any animal when extreme temperatures are evident on the day of departure. To be safe, choose flights that depart and arrive during cooler hours of the day, avoiding midday flights if possible.

If you’re traveling with a service animal, be aware that only service animal permitted on Alaska Airlines is a service dog. Read through our  updated policy on support animals  for all the documents and timelines you’ll need.

Now, time to relax.

You just fought traffic all the way to the airport, parked like a pro and got through security with all your belongings. Reward yourself with a drink, snack and comfortable spot in airports with Alaska Lounges .

Passengers can carry one personal item bag. A personal item may be a laptop bag, a purse, or a briefcase as long as it fits under the seat.

Alaska Airlines has a penalty of $25 per item and will be tagged as checked luggage to be claimed at your destination. For a second checked bag, a standard fee of $40 is charged, helping manage the load and maintain safety on board.

Size check templates are available and are located at their ticketing counters and departure gates. However, to avoid any inconvenience, better to check the carry-on luggage dimension beforehand or use a carry-on or under-the-seat luggage with approved specifications. The airline maintains a standard size guide for carry-on luggage of 91422 inches, which passengers should adhere to for a smooth travel experience. Self-heating meals or beverages are not allowed for safety reasons, but you can still pack other types of food.

Alaska Airlines permits passengers to bring non-liquid, non-spillable food items on board. This includes packaged or homemade meals, snacks, fruits, and vegetables. Just make sure that any liquids, gels, or aerosols are in containers under 3.4 ounces and stored in a clear, quart-sized bag following TSA guidelines.

It’s essential to pack your food in spill-proof containers to avoid any messes during your flight. Transparent, resealable bags are perfect for storing your food items and snacks. Avoid foods with strong odors that may disturb other passengers or attract animals to maintain a pleasant environment onboard.

Alaska Airlines Prohibited Items With Liquid Limit

Alaska Airlines follows the list of permitted and prohibited items of the Transportation and Security Administration (TSA). In addition, Alaska Air included a few items on the list.

Every passenger may bring liquids, gels, and aerosols in 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters travel-size containers. Every passenger is restricted to one quart-size bag of liquids, gels, and aerosols. Everyday items that are under this category are toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, and lotion.

Any liquid that does not fit into the TSA 3-1-1 rule will either have to be checked with your luggage or will be thrown away at the security checkpoint.

Airlines are under pressure financially to offset the cost of rising fuel prices. Lots of airlines charge excess baggage fees for checking one or more luggage items. Some are even charging for a carry-on.

How Strict Is Alaska Airlines With Carry-on? 2024

Photo of author

Heading to the airport without investigating your airline policy can end up with some hefty charges or cause your carry on bag to be gate checked.

Here is everything you need to know about Alaska airline carry on, checked baggage and excess baggage.

Before heading to the airport we recommend having an ideal carry-on bag or a backpack that adheres to the Alaska airline size regulations.

how strict is alaska airlines carry on-01

How Strict Is Alaska Airlines Carry on?

Nothing surprising, your carry on needs to follow Alaska airlines carry on limits.

Alaska Airlines is slightly strict about its carry on luggage, please make sure that you adhere to the airline carry on policies:

  • 1 main carry-on bag with 45 linear inches (22″ x 14″ x 9″) or 115 centimeters (61 x 43 x 25 cm) including handles and wheels and needs to fit the overhead compartment.
  • 1 personal item that can be one (purse, briefcase, laptop bag) per passenger fee free needs to fit under the seat in-front of you.
Please note that bulkhead seats do not have under seat storage, therefore, all carry-on baggage must be stowed in the overhead bin during take-off and landing. Alaska Airlines

Additional items

In addition of your main carry on bag and under-seat item, you can also bring additional small objects free of charge:

  • A jacket, umbrella
  • Books to read
  • Duty free items
  • Assistive devices (wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, strollers, child restraint seats, etc.) do not count towards your carry-on allowance.
  • Diaper bags are counted as the one personal item.

Alaska Airline Liquid Limits

Just like other US airlines traveling with liquids within or from the US, liquid limits are regulated with the TSA.

So you will have to follow the TSA 3-1-1 liquid rule.

Only 3.4 oz / 100 ml or less for each container, and placed in a single quart sized bag.

Large amount of liquids needs to be transported in checked luggage .

For more details on liquids you can search what can I bring section on this website or on the TSA official website .

Best Carry-on Luggage For Alaska Airlines?

There are so many carry-on bags that fit Alaska Airlines carry-on policies and in the overhead bin.

Soft-sided bags are always preferred to use as carry-on baggage, as they can fit easily in both under the seat and in the overhead compartment.

Try Checked Luggage

If you have a large carry-on bag and you don’t want to take the risk, it is better to think about checking your bag before the airline staff ask you to gate check it.

Alaska Airlines standard checked baggage allowance is as follows:

  • 2 bags free of charge with maximum dimensions : 62 inches linear or 157 centimeters (length + width + height) and Maximum weight : 50 pounds or 23 kilograms

Just watch out for oversized bags.

What Is Alaska Airlines Oversized Baggage Policy?

how strict is alaska airlines carry on-02

Alaska Airlines (AS) will charge $100 USD extra for bags that are from 63 to 115 linear inches or from 160 to 292 centimeters. Bags that go above 115 linear inches or 292 centimeters will not be accepted as checked baggage / hold luggage.

What is Alaska Airlines overweight baggage?

Alaska Airlines (AS) will charge the following fees for bags that are more than the standard 50 pounds or 23 kilograms:

  • 51 to 100 pounds or 24 to 46 kilograms: $100 USD extra per a single bag
  • Bags exceeding 100 pounds or 46 kilograms will not be accepted as checked baggage / hold luggage.

Final Thoughts

Alaska Airlines will be strict about its carry on size, mostly o a busy flight.

Overweight and oversized bags can cause chaos on board the airplanes, and that is a bad image for their customer service.

But if your bag exceeds the dimensions by only one inch or two, I don’t think that you will have a problem with the airline staff.

We hope this helps .

Happy travels.

Travel gear and packing tips to help you avoid rising checked bag fees

I n case you missed it, five of the six major U.S. airlines recently raised their checked bag fees . Alaska Airlines started the trend in December 2023 when it raised prices for checked luggage to $35 for the first checked bag fee (a $5 increase), which went into effect on Jan. 2, 2024. American Airlines , Delta , JetBlue and United followed suit with similar increases.

There are still ways to pay less for checked bags. United gives customers a $5 discount when they prepay for checked bags at least 24 hours before their flight, for example, but if you're looking for one surefire way to avoid checked bag fees altogether — cram all your belongings into a carry-on bag and a personal item.

Most airlines, save for ultra low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier, allow passengers to bring one carry-on bag and a personal item free of charge. Let's look at some must-have gear and a few travel tips to help you bring everything you need on the plane and save money on checked bag fees.

Carry-on only travel gear

Stuffable neck pillow.

This DreamShore Travel Pillow is no ordinary neck pillow. It's a pillow cover that you can stuff with up to two days' worth of clothing, freeing up space in your carry-on bag so you can avoid checked bag fees. The material is velvety soft, and the pillow is surprisingly comfortable when fully stuffed. You can also fold it into your carry-on bag and transport t-shirts or other souvenirs on your journey home.

One word of warning: If you are flying on an ultra low-cost carrier like Spirit Airlines, we have heard from other travelers that gate agents sometimes consider a neck pillow a personal item. If you can't fit your pillow into your suitcase or personal item, they may charge you a fee to check your bag at the gate.

To buy: DreamShore Stuffable Travel Pillow , $22.99 (normally $35.99)

Garment duffle bag

When is a duffle bag more than just a duffle bag? When it's the Ruima Convertible Garment Duffle Bag, which manages to be both a garment bag and a duffle bag in one. You can lay it out flat and hang any clothing you want to keep wrinkle-free and then zip it into a duffle to fill with your other travel necessities.

Most duffel bags have just one cavernous space that you throw your belongings into (and then have to painfully dig through to find your belongings), the Ruima Convertible Duffle Bag has ample pouches and pockets to keep your gear organized. There's even a dedicated shoe compartment and an exterior pocket to store travel documents and other items you may want easy access to at the airport. It's also perfectly sized as a carry-on bag for your flight.

Mini carry-on luggage

Good things do come in small packages. In this case, we're referring to a suitcase so small it fits under most airplane seats. The Take Off Luggage Personal Item Suitcase was designed to perfectly match the required dimensions for a personal item on ultra-low-cost airlines like Spirit and Frontier (18"x14"x8"). In fact, some Amazon reviewers mentioned that Spirit was so familiar with the brand that they no longer require people to test Take Off bags in their sizers. But, rest assured, if you do need to test it in the sizer, it would fit.

This bag has removable wheels (you will need to remove the wheels at the gate to meet the size requirements), an interior pouch for organization and slides easily under your airplane seat.

To buy: Take Off Luggage 18-Inch Suitcase , $119.99

Refillable travel containers

If you refuse to compromise your hair and skincare routines and make do with hotel toiletries, you'll need travel-size bottles that are compliant with the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) 3-1-1 guidelines for liquids . Essentially, when flying, liquids must be stored in a 3.4-ounce or smaller container; and those liquids must be placed inside one clear quart-size plastic bag. Each passenger is only allowed one plastic bag.

These Kitsch Refillable Travel Pouches are durable, compact and leakproof. Each set comes with three pouches so that you can pack your favorite shampoo, conditioner, styling products, lotions, creams and more.

To buy: Kitsch Travel Pouches , $8.49 (normally $9.99)

Jacket with hidden pockets

When you look at the SCOTTeVEST Women's Windbreaker, it's hard to believe this sleek jacket has 19 hidden pockets. If you're running out of room in your carry-on luggage, this water-repellant coat can hold a surprising number of items. When it's time to go through the security checkpoint, you can remove the jacket instead of emptying your pockets.

Interior pockets are sized to fit items like a tablet, phone, water bottle, ID or passport, earbuds, sunglasses and more. When you aren't using the jacket, it packs into its own back pocket for easy stowage.

To buy: SCOTTeVEST Women's Windbreaker , $149

Carry-on-only travel tips

Know the airline's maximum size for carry-on luggage and personal items.

Each airline has individual size guidelines for carry-on bags and personal items. Remember that each airline's carry-on policy accounts for the size of your entire bag, including your luggage's handles and wheels.

Before your trip, you can review the size guidelines on the airline's website or in our carry-on luggage size guide . In the case of personal items, most airlines will let you get away with any items that fit under the seat in front of you. The exception is low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier which have specific size requirements.

In addition to knowing which size items are allowed, you need to know which items are allowed with your fare class. Some basic economy fares, for example, only allow for a personal item, and you must pay a fee to bring a carry-on bag.

Know which items can't be brought onto a plane

Some items you cannot carry onto the plane with you, regardless of their size. These include flammable items like aerosol sprays, lighter fluid, fireworks or anything that could easily start a fire, liquids over 3.4 ounces, tools, sporting equipment or weapons that could potentially be used to cause harm and firearms. A few surprising items, like snowglobes, are on the list, too.

Read TPG's guide on what not to pack in your carry-on here .

Only bring what you need

This may seem obvious, but you need to be ruthless with your packing list when trying to bring everything on the plane. Do you really need three pairs of shoes, or will two do? Do you need your hair dryer from home or can you use the slightly jankier one in the hotel? Can you pack less by doing laundry while you are away?

These are all things to remember while culling your packing list to save space.

Wear your bulkiest items on the plane

If you are old enough to remember the "Friends" episode where Joey wears all of Chandler's clothes, you can put that sitcom moment to good use next time you travel. If you plan to bring a hat, jacket, boots or a sweater, wear them on the plane to save space in your luggage.

Don't break the rules

It can be tempting to bring a bag that's too big or hide a backpack under your clothing, but it's simply not worth the risk. You'll be stuck paying for a checked bag if you are caught. What's worse is that certain airlines will charge an additional fee if you pay for your checked bag at the airport instead of in advance.

Get a credit card with a free checked bag perk

Sometimes, checking a bag can't be avoided, no matter how hard you try. Luckily, there are more than 20 credit cards that come with a free checked bag perk . Which airlines accept this benefit depends on which card (or cards) you carry. Most major airlines have several card types that offer this perk. For example, Delta has six cobranded credit cards that offer free checked bags.

Several travel credit cards offer general travel reimbursements that you can apply to checked bag fees. For example, The Platinum Card® from American Express offers up to $200 in annual statement credits for incidental charges from one qualifying airline, and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card offers up to $300 in statement credits for travel purchases charged to your card each year.

Bottom line

Avoiding checked bag fees is one of the easiest ways to save money when you fly. You will have more money in your pocket and breeze through the airport with your extra-light luggage.
