2023 Ford Excursion Comeback: More Than Rumor

2023 Ford Excursion

Today’s market is full of SUVs with pretty impressive dimensions but back in the day, there were even bigger models. This primarily refers to Ford Excursion, which was in production between 1999 and 2005. It is one of the biggest SUVs ever made, based on the F-250 Super Duty pickup . These days, we are getting reports about the possible comeback of the nameplate. Allegedly, the blue oval company is already working on the new model, which could come as the 2023 Ford Excursion.

At this point, the revived Excursion is just a rumor. The officials are still quiet, so it’s hard to talk about details. On the other hand, we may presume some base design solutions and features. More precisely, we expect to see the same design approach as in the case of the original model, though everything will be adapted to the modern era of the automotive industry

2023 Ford Excursion Design

The comeback of this large SUV has been rumored and if we can trust rumors, the all-new 2023 Ford Excursion could arrive already in the next year. At this point, we don’t know anything about design and features, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make some predictions, especially in terms of base design characteristics.

This particularly refers to the base design approach, which would be the same as in the case of the original model. We would see a design that’s based on Ford’s Super Duty pickup, the F-250. The two models would share most of the parts, though we presume that the new SUV would come with slight revisions regarding suspension setup and similar things.

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind about the exterior is its gigantic size. If you remember the original model, you know it was the biggest SUV on the market, with more than 137 inches in wheelbase. Meanwhile, the competition got bigger as well, so models like GMC Yukon XL now feature 134 inches in wheelbase. Therefore, we may expect the 2023 Ford Excursion to be even bigger. Some sources suggest that the new model could feature more than 140 inches between the axles.

In terms of styling, we don’t expect bigger surprises. The 2023 Ford Excursion would come with a familiar design approach, especially in terms of the front end. Of course, we are talking about the same front face as on the F-250, with the same grille, headlights etc. The rest of the body would come in a typical wagon manner, long and extremely spacious.

Without any doubt, the first thing that comes to mind about interior design is the amount of space. With the expected dimensions, there is no doubt that the 2023 Ford Excursion would feature tremendous amounts of space. We would see three extremely spacious rows of seats, where even the third row would feature more than 40 inches in legroom. As result, the new model would be able to accommodate eight adult passengers with ease. The cargo area would also bring tons of space, as the overall volume would probably go way over 150 cubic feet.

2023 Ford Excursion Interior

On the other hand, the dashboard design would feature the same shape as the one found in the F-250. Still, we might see minor upgrades for this occasion, in the form of nicer materials and new tech features. Speaking of the tech features, we presume that the new SUV would come standard with the company’s new, vertically-oriented screen.

2023 Ford Excursion Engines

It’s relatively easy to predict what would happen under the hood of the 2023 Ford Excursion. We presume that the engine lineup would be the same as in the pickup sibling, which indicates three powertrain options on the offer. Base models would come with a 6.2-liter V8, which puts out around 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The upgrade would come in the form of a 7.3-liter Godzilla V8 engine, which comes with a max output of 430 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

Finally, we also expect to see a diesel version of the SUV. That model would come with the monstrous 6.7-liter turbodiesel, which puts out around 475 horsepower and 1.050 pound-feet of torque.

All three engines would come coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

I want….when can I order?

Early fleet production data for the 2023 Expedition points to an estimated production start date of November 2022. That may change, so stay tuned for possible updates.

I Own a 2008 F350 and I love it. The wife and I both our looking to purchase a new family vehicle in 2023. We would love to see the new excursion that will be our first choice.

With the changing market toward the woke EV market, please don’t ignore the Thousands of normal American truck customers that would line up to buy an excursion. I sold my 2003 7.3L Excursion when it didn’t fit in the garage in my new house. I have had 17 years of sale remorse and while I owned one of the 6 L disaster engines, I would buy a 2023 Excursion without hesitation. 113K miles on my RAM 3500 and this one would just take the place of the worthless diesel grand Cherokee I am stuck with.

When’s the last time you saw one of these three row SUVs hauling eight passengers? Total waste of money and gas, for size queens only

FORD, it’s about time…Thank you…

I had a 2000 Excursion with the V10 and it was the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. It was great in the snow, rain or just about anything I put it through. I kept it up to par. I just lost it on New Year’s morning to a drunk driver. She totalled the whole rear end. When the New Excursion comes out I plan on buying one and hopefully it upholds to the older models. They are beautiful and very dependable and stout. Love them

Hell No! I’ll take my 2000 v10 over that any day! This new version is bound to be more plastic and have more emissions crap on it! Not to mention the price tag! If the new Expeditions are $60k+ then how much is this thing going to cost?

2023 Ford Expedition Review

2023 ford excursion review

  • Cavernous interior with plenty of passenger and cargo space
  • Quick acceleration from strong V6 engine
  • Large standard display screen, or even larger optional screen
  • Tows more than similarly sized SUVs
  • Disappointing real-world fuel economy
  • Large size and slow steering make it cumbersome to drive

What's new

  • Larger Max model offered on all trims
  • Part of the fourth Expedition generation introduced in 2018

Planning on towing or hauling a lot of stuff with your SUV? The 2023 Ford Expedition might be just what you're looking for. This large three-row SUV offers seating for eight and is one of the biggest and most capable vehicles out there. But it's also plenty refined and offers just about everything Ford supplies these days in regards to technology, including BlueCruise, which is a helpful hands-free driver assist system for use on select highways.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2023 Ford Expedition XL STX 4dr SUV (3.5L 6cyl Turbo 10A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.17 per gallon for premium unleaded in North Dakota.

Much of the Expedition's robust capability comes by way of its truck-based underpinnings. Ford says you can pull up to 9,300 pounds with the Expedition when it's properly equipped. That's enough to pull a good-sized trailer or boat. Or if you need space for a family road trip or to help move house, there's the long-wheelbase Expedition Max body style and its substantial 121.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first-row seats.

The Expedition is one of just a few large SUVs around. The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon (plus the related Suburban and Yukon XL) are the Expedition's primary rivals, but you might also consider the relatively new Jeep Wagoneer or Wagoneer L. Toyota is out with a redesigned Sequoia, too. What's the best max-sized SUV for you? Read our test team's Expert Rating to find out how the Expedition stacks up.

Ford Expedition vs. Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevy Tahoe and its twin, the GMC Yukon, are the Expedition's closest competitors. GM followed Ford's lead when it redesigned the Tahoe with a rear independent suspension. As a result, its third-row seat is more spacious than before, though the Expedition's rearmost seats are slightly roomier. You get more engine choices with the Chevy, however, and the Tahoe's V8 returned better real-world fuel economy than the Expedition's turbo V6 in our tests.

Ford Expedition vs. Jeep Wagoneer

The Jeep Wagoneer is the brand's long-awaited three-row SUV. It's based on the same underpinnings as the Ram 1500 and is generally more luxury-focused than other body-on-frame SUVs in the class. As a result, it's more comfortable and has a more refined interior than the Expedition, but it also has a higher starting price.

Ford Expedition vs. Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada is a decent off-roader and a highly practical three-row SUV. Against the Expedition, however, it's at a disadvantage. The Armada's V8 engine is smooth but thirsty even for a big SUV. The Nissan is also not as roomy as the Ford and has less impressive tech.

2023 Ford Expedition First Impressions

2023 ford excursion review

What is the Expedition?

The Ford Expedition is the biggest and baddest vehicle in Ford's arsenal. This large three-row SUV is based on the Ford F-150, meaning it uses body-on-frame construction — the default choice for SUVs before the car-based crossover became ubiquitous. The Expedition's pickup truck underpinnings give it the strength to tow heavier equipment than the Ford Explorer crossover, yet its ride doesn't suffer as a result. This generation of Expedition dates back to 2018, and from its inception, Ford has done a great job balancing the need for a tough, capable SUV with the ride comfort buyers expect of a modern vehicle.

We don't expect the 2023 Ford Expedition to be significantly different from last year's model. That's because the 2022 Expedition introduced a slew of new changes, including a larger touchscreen, the addition of the BlueCruise hands-free driving system and the new Timberline trim, driven by a slightly less powerful version of the engine from the F-150 Raptor. If Ford does tweak the 2023 Expedition, it will likely be in the form of minor shuffling to standard or optional equipment. Buyers in the market for a family-friendly SUV now can check out the 2022 model.

MegaRexx SVN Ford F-250 Excursion conversion

You Can Buy a New 7-Seat 2023 Ford Excursion

Ford hasn’t made a Super Duty Excursion SUV for years. But that hasn’t stopped enthusiasts from wishing it still did. That was the basis behind MegaRexx Trucks’ converting an F-250 into a new Excursion. And if you like it, you can buy one of these hulking seven-passenger SUVs .

The MegaRexx SVN Ford F-250 ‘Excursion’ is a murdered-out masterpiece

MegaRexx SVN Ford F-250 'Excursion'

Over-the-top trucks are a MegaRexx specialty. The Castle Hayne, North Carolina-based outfit calls this three-row extra-large SUV the “MegaRexx SVN.” We’ve covered the company’s other creations, including the MegaRaptor and MegaBronc . When it comes to Ford trucks on bath salts, MegaRexx delivers.

First, the company fashions a long roof from aluminum. Then it turns the F-250 bed into a part of the cabin. Easier said than done, we know. It’s integrated with the rest of the F-250 , not just a fiberglass bed cap.

The long expanse of tinted windows in the murdered-out presentation goes almost unnoticed.

Step into the luxurious MegaRexx SVN interior

MegaRexx SVN Ford F-250 'Excursion' conversion

Inside, the blackness continues with leather-trimmed Lariat Ultimate everything. That and more give the cabin an upscale appearance.

The front and second-row seating feature power bucket seats. And the rear uses a Ford Expedition third row, trimmed like the front and middle-row bucket seats. Additionally, the third-row passengers get a Vintage Air climate-controlled system. And with the Lariat Ultimate trim, the front seats come heated and ventilated.

Also, expect the Ford Sync 4 infotainment system and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system as part of the package.

This 7-seat Excursion conversion has other unique touches

Driver's side view of a black Ford F-250 'Excursion' conversion by MegaRexx Trucks

Outside, the MegaRexx SVN Super Duty receives a modest 2.5-inch lift, along with a Carli Suspension leveling system. The 20-inch rims are Fuel Militia wheels, supporting 35-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler off-road hoops. Thanks to those tires and lift, tubular side steps are also part of the package.

In addition, you’ll find plenty of MegaRexx ID badging on the exterior. The front and rear fenders get badges, as do the C-pillars. Also, the company name is emblazoned on the tailgate. Inside, the only identification appears on the dash, expected for a high-end custom SUV .

How much does a MegaRexx SVN Ford F-250 ‘Excursion’ cost?

The starting price is $179,950. At first, that’s enough to make you think twice. But this vehicle is truly unique, yet it can haul family, friends, toys, and more with ease. And it’s big. If you want big, the MegaRexx SVN is it.

Furthermore, this Excursion conversion looks like it came from Ford. Some other aftermarket creations look like hatchet jobs. MegaRexx has done plenty of similar conversions for the past few years. So don’t be afraid. Step up to a large, luxe, rugged 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty “Excursion.”

2023 Ford Expedition Timberline Review: The Do-It-All Daily That Does Even Better Off-Road

By Aaron Segal

Posted on Jun 9, 2023 10:15 AM EDT

2023 ford excursion review

If you’ve ever been to a ski resort in the U.S., there’s a good chance you passed, parked next to, or got cut off by a Chevy Suburban or something similar. These snow-filled gravel lots are littered with three-row SUVs transporting families up mountain roads. The massive people haulers all follow the same tried and true formula: Take a big SUV, and then make it a bit bigger—just in case. This rings true for the 2023 Ford Expedition Timberline, but in my time with it, I found it to be more than just a status symbol. It’s a wheeler.

Like many other automakers are doing, Ford developed the Expedition Timberline to be the adventure-ready option for people with more money and more seats at their dinner table. Some of these examples are just the same car with a slight lift and some cladding, but the Timberline takes it a bit more seriously. For my recent bro-trip to Breckenridge, Colorado, I enlisted the help of one to see if it can perform as well on the trail as it does in the ski resort parking lot.

2023 ford excursion review

2023 Ford Expedition Timberline Specs

  • Base price (Timberline as tested): $71,400 ($83,805)
  • Powertrain: 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 | 10-speed automatic | 4-wheel drive
  • Horsepower: 440 @ 5,000 rpm
  • Torque: 510 lb-ft @ 2,250 rpm
  • Seating capacity: 8
  • Curb weight: 5,368 pounds
  • Towing capacity: 9,200 pounds
  • Cargo volume: 104.6 cubic feet with seats down
  • Ground clearance: 10.6 inches
  • Off-road angles: 28.5° approach | 21.9° breakover | 23.7° departure
  • EPA fuel economy: 15 mpg city | 19 highway | 17 combined
  • Quick take: It’s not just an appearance package, the Timberline actually performs.
  • Score: 7/10

The Expedition is Ford’s biggest SUV—well, technically the Expedition Max is, but they’re in the same family. It slides neatly above the Ford Explorer in terms of space and size, while offering towing capacity closer to its pickup truck brother: the Ford F-150. The “normal” Expedition and Expedition Max come in many different trims but the Timberline—our focus in this review—is far more outdoorsy than any XLT you would find at a rental desk.

On the outside, Ford has taken a number of steps to separate the Timberline from the rest of the Expedition lineup. Available in a range of earthy tones, it sits noticeably higher than a standard Expedition thanks to off-road shocks and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler all terrain tires. The bumper is also beefed up with orange tow hooks and orange trim. Paired with a sizable skid plate and blacked-out trim pieces, Ford has done a solid job at setting the Timberline apart from the rest of the pack.

2023 ford excursion review

Moving inside, the rugged theme continues. Orange stitching lines the seats, while aluminum and orange accenting run across the dash. Some may be turned off by such a bright accent color, but it works well and isn’t overbearing to the overall wilderness theme. Beyond that, there aren’t many things on the inside that separate the Timberline from another upper-trim Expedition. This particular vehicle is optioned with a $9,000 equipment package, the only major option on the Timberline. It features a number of items worth spending your money on including an astonishingly large panoramic sunroof, heated second-row seats, and Ford’s signature iPad—er, 15-inch infotainment screen.

The Timberline trim only comes with one engine option: Ford’s high output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 making a healthy 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. Shifting gears is incredibly smooth thanks to the 10-speed transmission that’s mated to a two-speed transfer case with a button-operated locking rear differential. This same engine and transmission combination is used in the EcoBoost F-150 and provides more than enough power to get the Timberline up to speed, even while weighted down with eight dudes inside—ask me how I know.

2023 ford excursion review

Driving the Ford Expedition Timberline

On the road, the Timberline is noticeably gigantic. From someone who owns a lowered Mazda Miata , this was quite an adjustment. As I was still wrapping my head around the sheer size of this lifted beast, I began to navigate the city streets of Denver. At first I was nervous about blind spots in a vehicle this size, but surprisingly I only found one: a minor spot down the driver side that was easily solved via blind-spot monitoring. As I ran errands my first morning with the Timberline, the behemoth became more manageable. Its turning circle was impressively tight for such a big thing, and radar cruise control kept me comfortable in Denver rush hour traffic. It made sure I kept a safe distance—and more importantly—centered in the lane.

As my group began the drive up to Breckenridge, I set my sights on the notorious Loveland Pass via I-70. Going up in elevation, it became clear that while the 10-speed transmission is better for fuel economy, there is a significant delay between putting your foot down and the transmission actually kicking down to a usable gear. While I wouldn’t mind on a flat road, I found myself having to constantly give it the beans in order for the transmission to find the right gear on a climb. Once the transmission responded, the EcoBoost V6 had an impressive amount of power to get me, a bunch of guys, and all our snowboards up and over the 11,000-foot mountain pass.

The off-road suspension of the Timberline handled the twists and turns of the mountain highway equitably. Even loaded down, it didn’t lean too much or feel as though it was too soft for its own good. As I passed a couple lifted Jeeps with their off-road tires whining away against the asphalt, I was impressed at how quiet and refined the Timberline is inside, despite its ruggedness and Goodyear all-terrains.

2023 ford excursion review

Once in the mountains, we navigated to our Airbnb that sat atop a dirt road at 10,500 feet—almost 1,500 feet above Breckenridge. On one of the mornings there, I woke up to a surprise 8 inches of fresh snow. I departed the driveway in snow mode, and the Expedition handled the conditions so well that I barely noticed the powder. The tires seem to have really made the difference here. Even though the Timberline has the technology and clearance to bust through the snow, other AWD vehicles struggled to drive up the dirt road that day with all-seasons or standard snow tires.

In addition to snow driving, I was able to take the Expedition Timberline on the Switzerland Trail —a modestly technical route located in the hills outside of Boulder, Colorado. While the Timberline took up most of the rock-covered single track, it handled the bumps, steep climbs, and rocky trail with ease. At this point my testing had gone quite far past anything a typical family would endure, so I quickly returned to the glory of the ski resort parking lot.

2023 ford excursion review

Highs and Lows

If you’re looking for an SUV with a seemingly endless amount of space, then the Ford Expedition Timberline is a strong contender. I have never driven a rig that can fit so many people or bags so comfortably while also traversing most anything in its path. Almost all of the seats independently adjust and fold, making storage in the Timberline endlessly configurable. Every time I got in the car I was putting seats up and down to accommodate humans, suitcases, snowboards, or a little of everything. It works great.

2023 ford excursion review

Drawbacks specific to the Expedition were few and far between. After multiple generations making the rig, they’ve got the recipe down. Most of my gripes came in the form of industry trends, such as its gear selector. Like other companies, Ford fitted the new Expedition with a circular knob paired with a button-actuated manual gear selector next to it. When I tried to engage a lower gear to descend down steep roads, I found myself having to continuously take my eyes off the road in order to first find the shifter, select “M”, and then move my hand back to a less-than-ergonomic position in order to finally select a lower gear. For an SUV that is supposed to ease the gap between off road, on road, and towing, this does not work well. It’d be safer and easier to operate if it had a traditional gear lever like the F-150, or at least provide steering wheel paddles.

Ford Expedition Timberline Features, Options, and Competition

The base Timberline falls right in the middle of the Expedition trim offerings you’ll find from Ford, though with options, it costs nearly the same as a Platinum. While some of the core features are the same, Ford has done an excellent job leveling up this trim package. The Timberline comes fitted with a heavy duty skid plate, off road shocks and suspension, a 0.8-inch suspension lift, all terrain tires, and an all terrain management system. Additionally, my particular vehicle was outfitted with the pricey but worth it equipment package mentioned previously. This includes the massive 15.5-inch touchscreen infotainment, Ford’s impressive adaptive cruise control, a rockin’ 12 speaker sound system by Bang & Olufsen, and a digital gauge cluster with fancy graphics and useful displays.

2023 ford excursion review

While there’s a whole host of competitors in the three-row SUV space, when it comes to off-road ready versions, there are two major rivals for the Timberline: the Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro and the Chevy Tahoe Z71. The Sequoia takes the hardcore approach with Fox shocks, a coil-sprung rear axle, and tech features like Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select. It’s essentially a stand-in for the legendary Land Cruiser since we no longer get that in the States. The Tahoe Z71 takes a more conservative approach with alterations to the front bumper, all terrain tires, and a more mild set of off road shocks. In my view, the changes on the Expedition Timberline go farther to give you something that looks and feels more special than the Chevy Tahoe Z71, but it falls just short of the Sequoia TRD Pro in terms of off-road attitude.

2023 ford excursion review

There aren’t a ton of optional extras on the Timberline trim apart from complete option groups. If I were to spec it myself, I would go with my tester’s 501A Equipment Package and Ford Co-Pilot360 options, but swap out colors for the gorgeous Forged Green Metallic.

Fuel Economy

Let’s face it, the Expedition Timberline is not meant to be economical. I’m a big believer in the EcoBoost V6 because they perform well—even when towing. But when it comes to moving a 5,600-pound vehicle, there’s only so much you can do. Nevertheless, the Expedition sits right in the middle of the pack in terms of EPA estimated fuel economy.

In my time with this tank I averaged 15.6 mpg, which I found pretty impressive given that I was constantly driving up and down mountain roads. Given normal city driving conditions, I expect this number will go up.

Value and Verdict

For $83,805 fully loaded and delivered, there are plenty of options out there and the Expedition Timberline is an honorable choice. In all reality, buyers care more about driver assistance and interior features, as opposed to one-pedal trail driving and wheel articulation. However, like many vehicles, it’s nice to know that it could do it… if it needed to. The Timberline completes these tasks with ease.

The Ford Expedition Timberline is cool, even if it doesn’t offer anything drastically better than the off-road ready competition. Buying the Expedition Timberline is a choice you won’t regret. It’s sharp, capable, and dependable. But it’s worth cross-shopping the competition. If I were in the market, it’d be a tough choice between this and that Sequoia TRD Pro.

2023 ford excursion exterior, interior, and specs, 2023 ford excursion: what we know so far.

2023 Ford Excursion – The Ford Excursion is a distant memory these days, and cars like the Ford Fiesta and Ford Escape rule the roads. But what if we told you the best SUV ever might be coming back to change that? And it has won tons of awards and tons of critical acclaim. This new model will come with an all-new design and an ambitious goal: to be the best SUVs on the market.

Rumors started to surface, excitement grew, and we decided to theorize about the 2023 Ford Excursion. It was clear that Ford already had a vision for their next Excursion, but the only thing we knew was that it would be heavy. Well, Ford has finally released information on what they were working on all these years. Let’s take a look at what they released.

2023 Ford Excursion

What’s New 2023 Ford Excursion?

The Excursion redesign by 2023 will be a significant milestone for the iconic SUV with a new look, a new engine, and a new technology. Ford has been the top-selling luxury vehicle for many years in North America.

New 2023 Honda Accord Redesign

The forthcoming 2023 Ford Excursion will have nearly identical proportions to its predecessor. Because the platform will be new, the Excursion is expected to be lighter and stiffer, improving its performance. Ford has previously said that it will use “EcoBoost” engines across the board in its future SUV lineup.

Is the 2023 Ford Excursion a Good Car?

The Ford Excursion is a full-size pickup truck, known as one of the most capable trucks ever made. It has been long out of production and resurrected as a premium trim option for Ford’s new Expedition SUV. Ford is not the only automaker to offer a ute-to-car crossover, but Ford is the first to provide a legitimate “excursion” trim.

How much does the 2023 Ford Excursion look like?

Ford Motor Company has plans to release the newest model of their legendary Excursion line. Recently, the Company released the current trends that are expected to shape the future of their vehicles, including the latest information on the types of new engines used by different manufacturers. How much does the 2023 Ford Excursion look like? This year, the new Excursion model will be released on the market and compete with other newly-released vehicles.

2023 Ford Excursion Redesign

Ford has released a teaser image for their redesigned Excursion, set to be released in 2023. This refresh will follow the release of the 2020 Ford Expedition. The new Excursion will have a wider stance and a sleeker look to it. It’s unclear if the Excursion will maintain the 3rd row or go to 2 rows like the Expedition.

Exterior Design

In July of 2022, Ford announced plans to release a new Excursion truck. This truck is a more rugged version of their pickup truck geared toward a commercial audience, a first for Ford.

The first official pictures of the redesigned 2023 Ford Excursion have been leaked to the public. The exterior design was revolutionary, the interior was luxurious, and the engine capability was unmatched. It’s no wonder that Ford was voted as the most popular American-made vehicle of the future.

How does the exterior of the 2023 Ford Excursion look?

Ford is a car company that has been around for more than 100 years, and the Ford Excursion is the newest addition to their lineup. The Ford Excursion is a high-class SUV with a sleek design and comfortable interior. It was designed to tackle any terrain while still looking good on the exterior.

What are the dimensions of the 2023 Ford Excursion?

The dimensions of the 2023 Ford Excursion are 5 inches wide, 20 feet long, and 18 inches high. We expect the new model is set to debut later this year.

Interior Design

So what do you think the interior of a 2023 Ford Excursion looks like? Well, if you’re a fan of cluttered and cluttered areas, then you’ll love this concept sketch.

We expect the upcoming 2023 Ford Excursion will offer quite a large and comfy interior. The designers try to take the best from the old Ford Excursion and add modern technologies and comforts. Interior The 2023 Ford Excursion will get a large cabin, which is needed because of its size. Most likely, it will be the same as the one in the future, Ford Bronco.

2023 Ford Excursion Interior

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The six-speed transmission is the only available option for the standard Excursion, and it’s responsible for making sure you can safely and comfortably transport both people and cargo. The 3. 5-liter Triton V8 engine and twin-turbocharged 3. 0-liter Duratec 35 V6 engine allows for two tiers of performance.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Ford’s Excursion is a sturdy vehicle with excellent gas mileage. One of the features of the Excursion is infotainment and connectivity. The interface includes a 10.2-inch display screen with several options to play music, videos, and more while on the go. The infotainment system also has a voice command function that can be used to dial a phone number or find a nearby restaurant.

2023 Ford Excursion Price Release

There is no official timeline yet regarding the release schedule of the 2023 Ford Excursion, the Company has taken care not to reveal any information about the model, so it is pretty challenging to find out the truth. The Company will release various specifications and details in the future, but it is pretty challenging to predict when that will happen.

We expect the brand-new 2023 Ford Excursion will cost around $50,000. As previously said, Ford will undoubtedly offer various trim options, which is a good thing. We anticipate receiving further information in the coming months. According to reports, the full-size SUV will come in the first half of 2022.

Thinking of leasing a Ford Expedition?

The U.S. News Best Price Program saves users an average of $2,287 off the MSRP, and a lower price equals lower monthly lease payments. That means you could see a savings of $90 a month on a 36-month lease.

Drive and Performance 7.7 /10

The 2024 Expedition handles securely and has a light and easy steering feel, but it won't let you forget that you're driving a big truck-based SUV. It can feel ungainly when taking turns at higher speeds, and body roll is fairly pronounced. The SUV has a smooth ride quality, especially when equipped with the available adaptive air suspension. The brake pedal can feel soft at times, but it provides quick and confidence-inspiring stops. The Expedition comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, rear-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Depending on configuration, the engine produces 375 to 440 horsepower and 470 to 510 pound-feet of torque. Four-wheel drive is available on all trims and comes standard on the Timberline model.

Whichever flavor of Ford's refined twin-turbo V6 you choose, you won't be left wanting for power. Every version of this engine provides plenty of pep for the hefty SUV, even when it's loaded with passengers and cargo. The Expedition pulls away from a stop reasonably quickly for a vehicle of its size. That juice doesn't diminish as you upshift, and a steady stream of power and torque stays with you as you approach highway speeds. The Expedition's transmission works well and delivers smooth and rapid shifts.

The Expedition can also handily tackle dirt and gravel trails thanks to its body-on-frame design, available four-wheel drive and high ground clearance. For more serious off-road adventures, consider the rugged Timberline trim. It's an especially capable rock crawler thanks to features like all-terrain tires, performance-tuned shocks and suspension, a two-speed transfer case and an electronic limited-slip differential. Its large size prevents it from traveling tight trails, however. Finally, when properly equipped, the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds, which is excellent for the class. All Expedition models can tow up to 6,000 pounds regardless of configuration.

Fuel Economy 7.9 /10

The 2024 Expedition gets OK gas mileage for a large SUV. Depending on engine and body type, the SUV gets between 16 and 17 mpg in the city and between 19 and 23 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Interior 8.3 /10

The 2024 Ford Expedition has a well-crafted interior with a rugged yet refined aesthetic. Upper trims incorporate luxe materials like Palermo leather, aluminum and open-pore wood. There are some noticeable hard plastics strewn about, but the Expedition still has one of the nicest cabins in the segment. The Expedition seats five to eight people across two or three rows, depending on configuration. There's not a bad seat in this Ford's cabin thanks to the SUV's deep interior. The first two rows are especially comfortable and supportive, with plenty of head- and legroom for adults. The third row is spacious enough to accommodate grown-ups, but the seats aren't as plush as those in the first two rows.

The Expedition has an average amount of cargo space for the segment. Depending on third-row configuration, the standard Expedition has 19.3 to 20.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. There's 57.5 to 63.6 cubic feet of room behind the second row and a maximum capacity of 104.6 cubic feet with the second- and third-row seats folded down. The extended-wheelbase Expedition Max is even more capacious, with 34.3 to 36 cubic feet of room behind the third row, 73.3 to 79.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 121.5 cubes with both rear rows folded. A manual liftgate comes standard, and a power liftgate is available.

Value 7.3 /10

The 2024 Ford Expedition has a below-average value rating for the large SUV class . We determine value based on the vehicle's estimated total cost of ownership, along with the vehicle's MSRP for its base and top trims.

Safety 8.7 /10

The 2024 Expedition gets mostly good ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Ford SUV comes with an average number of standard driver-assistance features, including forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist.

For installing child safety seats there are three complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear seats in Expedition models with two rows. Three-row models have up to five complete LATCH connector sets.

Quality and Reliability

The 2024 Ford Expedition has a predicted reliability score of 74 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

Critics’ Rating 8.9 /10

The 2024 Ford Expedition receives a critics' rating that is average for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.

How Much Is a 2024 Ford Expedition?

The 2024 Expedition starts at $55,525. It comes with two-row seating and features such as a 12-inch touch-screen infotainment system. The XLT (base MSRP: $59,590) gets three-row seating and niceties like power-folding and reclining third-row seats, while the Limited (base MSRP: $68,410) is loaded with luxury amenities that include leather upholstery and heated and ventilated front seats. The Timberline is priced from $71,700 and comes with off-road-centric features like all-terrain tires and a two-speed transfer case. The King Ranch has a starting price of $78,465 and gains a 22-speaker premium audio system and a 15.5-inch touch screen, among other equipment. Finally, the range-topping Platinum (base MSRP: $80,695) comes with premium amenities such as massaging front seats and Ford's BlueCruise partially autonomous driving system.

Which Is the Best Ford Expedition Model to Buy?

We recommend the XLT trim. Only one step above the entry-level XL STX, this model seats up to eight people, comes with additional standard amenities and is available with a plethora of comfort, tech and driver-assistance features that aren't available with the base trim. Synthetic leather upholstery and a panoramic sunroof make the cabin look and feel nicer, while wireless device charging, adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera system are useful and modern features worth the extra cost.

Is the 2024 Ford Expedition a Good SUV?

Yes, the 2024 Expedition is a very good SUV. It provides a well-crafted and wide-open interior with lots of passenger and cargo space, an easy-to-use infotainment system and near-luxury build materials in higher trim levels. It also has plenty of power for nearly any driving situation, a stellar maximum towing capacity and a smooth ride. It falls short in terms of handling – it's somewhat unwieldy – but the beefy Ford doesn't have many major faults.

The Expedition is a fine pick if you want a well-rounded and capable large SUV with tons of passenger room, good build quality, stout engine options and excellent towing and hauling abilities. If you want a slightly less expensive SUV with more cargo room, the Chevrolet Tahoe is worth checking out. It isn't as nice inside as the Expedition, but it's still a good overall choice. If you want a more upmarket (and more expensive) large SUV with similar passenger and cargo volume as the Ford and best-in-class towing abilities, the Jeep Wagoneer could be for you. For an SUV that straddles the line between midsize and full size, the Toyota Grand Highlander blends large SUV passenger and cargo room and crossover-like handling dynamics. It isn't as powerful as the Expedition and isn't especially fancy inside, but it's worth considering if a big body-on-frame SUV seems excessive for your needs.

2024 Ford Expedition Versus the Competition

Ford expedition vs. chevrolet tahoe.

The Chevrolet Tahoe is one of the Expedition's longtime rivals, and Chevy's big SUV stands out in a few ways. Compared to its Ford counterpart, the Tahoe provides more cargo room, slightly better on-road handling and better fuel economy with the optional turbodiesel engine. The Expedition has a more upmarket interior and a higher maximum towing capacity, and both have spacious passenger cabins and easy-to-use infotainment systems. You really can't go wrong with either of these SUVs, but be sure to consider each vehicle's specific strengths and weaknesses before deciding which one is best for you.

Compare the Expedition and Tahoe »

Ford Expedition vs. Jeep Wagoneer

The Jeep Wagoneer is an impressive SUV with a lot to like. It has a more modern and upscale cabin than the Expedition, and both SUVs provide similar amounts of passenger and cargo room. The Wagoneer also has a cushier ride than the Expedition and best-in-class towing capacity. On the flip side, the Expedition has better overall fuel economy, a lower base MSRP and better handling abilities in tight spaces. Overall, the Wagoneer is a classy and capable large SUV with a few minor faults. Deciding between these two vehicles will likely come down to personal preference.

Specs and Features

The Expedition has an easy-to-use infotainment system. Both of the available touch screens provide crisp graphics and snappy response times, and there are lots of physical controls for climate and audio functions if you opt for the 12-inch touch screen. However, selecting the larger tablet-style display eliminates these controls in favor of all digital inputs. These touch-screen controls aren't as user-friendly as the physical ones, but the learning curve is relatively brief.
