It’s been especially important to protect our travel investments recently. You’ve likely had to cancel at least 1 trip in the past couple of years, and there’s still the uncertainty of whether future trips could face the same fate.

As a result, seeking out travel insurance that’s both affordable and provides the right combination of coverage has become an essential element of the trip-planning process versus a mere afterthought.

When it comes to purchasing travel insurance , it can be difficult to know where to start. Whether you conveniently buy the coverage offered when you purchase your trip, compare travel insurance companies and policies in-depth, or rely on your credit card with travel insurance , having as much information as possible can be helpful in making a decision on travel insurance.

Today we’re going to focus on 1 specific travel insurance company, International Medical Group, Inc. (known as IMG or IMGlobal). We’re also going to talk briefly about travel insurance in general, give you some tips on finding the best travel insurance value, and provide some direction when faced with the decision of whether you need to purchase coverage.

We’ll get to our review of IMG in short order, but let’s start by briefly discussing why you’d want to consider purchasing travel insurance.

Travel insurance provides protection for economic loss should unexpected covered events occur prior to and during your travels. The more money you have at risk, the greater the need to consider travel insurance.

If you’re simply purchasing a domestic flight and hotel for a weekend away, you may not need to purchase travel insurance.

However, if your trip includes a lot of non-refundable expenses or your itinerary is complex (increasing the chances that something could go wrong), you’ll want to be fully protected.

In addition, if your trip includes potentially dangerous sports activities , you’re visiting remote locations, or if you will not have medical insurance during your travels, you’ll also want to strongly consider travel insurance.

Here are some sample situations where travel insurance could provide protection:

  • You’re on safari, become seriously ill, and need to be evacuated to the nearest hospital.
  • There is severe weather, your flights are canceled and you must stay at a hotel overnight before continuing your trip.
  • An immediate family member passes away causing you to cancel your trip.
  • You’re skiing, fall, and break your leg.
  • There is a flood, your home becomes uninhabitable, and you must cancel your trip.

Bottom Line: If your trip is expensive, has a complex itinerary, you’re visiting a remote location, or you need medical coverage during your travels, you should consider a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

There are a lot of companies from which to select when purchasing travel insurance. The bottom line, however, is whether the company is financially sound, can pay its claims, offers a policy that is affordable, and has coverage matching your needs.

IMG checks all those boxes as a leading provider of international health insurance, travel medical insurance , and comprehensive travel insurance. The company’s parent company, SiriusPoint America Insurance Company, is rated A- (Excellent) by prominent insurance financial rating company A.M. Best . Additionally, IMG has been around for over 25 years, so you know you’re dealing with an established company.

IMG has also been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since 2005 and has an A- rating. The company has had 59 complaints in the past 3 years, the majority of which were concerns with products/services typical of other insurance company complaints, including claims processing.

Whether IMG has the exact policy that matches your needs and is affordable for you requires more research. We’ll be digging deeper into examples of its policies and pricing later in this article.

First, however, let’s talk about COVID-19 and how IMG may provide related coverage.

In the light of the pandemic, we’ve all become more aware of the need for travel insurance. Perhaps you’ve had to cancel a trip due to the fear of getting ill while traveling, or borders were shut down, making it impossible to travel to your destination.

Unfortunately, travel insurance does not cover these situations unless you have purchased Cancel for Any Reason insurance . This add-on to your travel insurance policy offers protection when you feel the need to cancel for any reason . The coverage can be expensive and only 50% to 75% of your trip expenditure will be covered.

Many travel insurance companies include coverage for COVID-19 for medical coverage, trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay. Some companies exclude COVID-19.

IMG treats COVID-19 as any other illness on the company’s iTravelInsured travel protection plans. It also offers a Cancel for Any Reason insurance add-on, depending on the policy you select. IMG may exclude coverage from some of its medical plans if your destination is designated as having a Level 3 warning by the Department of State (DOS) or the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Bottom Line: Travel insurance does not cover voluntary trip cancellations due to fear of getting ill or cancellations for borders that have been shut down due to COVID-19. You would need to purchase Cancel for Any Reason insurance to have coverage. IMG offers this add-on option with some of its plans.

IMG Global Plans

IMG offers 25 different insurance plans, ranging from basic travel medical insurance, comprehensive travel insurance, cruise and sports coverage, international medical insurance, and more.

The company is known for its international medical insurance offerings , including plans for visitors to the U.S. (including non-U.S. citizens, students, and exchange visitors). U.S. citizens traveling abroad will find several comprehensive travel insurance plans that include medical coverage or plans that have strong medical coverage with ancillary travel insurance.

The company also offers insurance that complies with Schengen visa requirements, specialized plans for government service workers, for marine captains/crew, and for those doing mission work.

Let’s look at a comparison snapshot of a few of the most popular plans offered by IMG and some of the coverage combinations you can expect to find.

This is just an overview of the core coverage offered by 3 of IMG’s travel insurance plans. Descriptions are abbreviated and are meant for comparison only.

Bottom Line: IMG offers a large variety of plans that allow you to select the type and level of coverage you prefer. In addition to comprehensive travel insurance plans, the company offers travel medical plans for visitors to the U.S. and plans for U.S. citizens when traveling both internationally and in the U.S.

IMG Global Quote Request

Obtaining a quote from IMG for your trip is simple. You’ll need to provide your age, where you reside, and your primary trip destination. You’ll also need to provide the dates of your trip and the total cost of your trip.

Once you hit submit, you’ll receive an instant quote for several different plan options. You can compare coverages, pricing, and then select the plan that fits what you’re looking for.

You can then purchase the plan and coverage will start on the date you selected.

You will have 10 days to review the plan. If you’re not satisfied, you will receive a full refund.

Bottom Line: You can receive an instant quote on the IMG website by providing minimal information. You can also immediately purchase the policy and be covered for the date you selected.

Chances are we wouldn’t purchase a new vehicle without shopping around to find the best value. Fortunately, comparing travel insurance policies to find the best value requires a lot less effort.

Travel insurance comparison websites simplify the process making it easy to compare dozens of companies and hundreds of policies, all in a few minutes.

You’ll need to input your trip and traveler information including where you reside, the cost and dates of the trip, whether you want an annual multi-trip policy, and the date you wish coverage to begin.

Also, all of these comparison sites offer click-through links to COVID-19 coverage information for each featured company.

Here are some of the best travel insurance comparison websites to get you started:

  • Squaremouth — Squaremouth compares a wide variety of policies, including annual plans that cover every trip you take within a 1-year period, medical travel insurance, single-trip coverage, and plans that cover sports/special activities.
  • Insure My Trip — Insure My Trip is a good source for comparing comprehensive single- or multi-trip plans that include medical coverage.
  • TravelInsurance.com — While the site does not compare medical-only plans, it offers comparisons of comprehensive travel insurance plans.
  • AARDY.com — We like AARDY as it does a great job of comparing dozens of highly rated travel insurance companies. We don’t like having to provide our email in order to obtain a quote, however.

Bottom Line: Travel insurance comparison websites help you compare the best companies and policy options in a minimal amount of time. You can also purchase the policy after your search and receive immediate coverage.

Let’s look now at how IMG compares to the complimentary travel insurance coverage on your credit cards, to other travel insurance companies, and to the point-of-sale travel insurance offerings you might find when purchasing flights or travel packages.

Here’s how IMG compares:

To Credit Card Travel Insurance

If your trip is simply a flight and a short hotel stay, the travel insurance that comes with your credit card could provide you with all the coverage you need.

Once your trip becomes more complex, or more expensive, the need for travel insurance becomes greater. In either of these situations, or if you need medical coverage for your trip, the coverage that comes on your credit card will not be sufficient.

One important element is that most of the coverage provided on your credit card is secondary , meaning you must file a claim with other insurance first. You could potentially have to deal with the travel provider, the credit card company, any other insurance that may cover the loss, and the claims administrator.

Having a comprehensive travel insurance policy, like those sold by IMG, could simplify the process, especially for a complex trip involving several providers.

To learn more about the best credit cards for travel insurance , we invite you to check out our informative article.

Bottom Line: The travel insurance that comes complimentary on your credit card may be sufficient enough to cover a simple trip, perhaps just consisting of a flight and hotel. Expensive, more complex trips, or those requiring medical coverage, will be better served by purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

To Other Travel Insurance Companies

IMG Global Quote Compare

Using a travel comparison website like the ones mentioned previously allows you to compare companies and policies quickly .

While plans and prices will vary widely depending on your trip and personal criteria, we created a quote based on a single-trip, 1 week in length, involving a traveler 40 years of age, with a total trip cost of $2,000.

The above quote does include CFAR insurance. But even without it, IMG came out higher than most competitors. Policy coverage was identical in most cases but IMG did offer $1,000,000 evacuation coverage, $10,000 in search-and-rescue coverage, and coverage for rented sporting equipment.

IMG Medical

When we look at travel medical coverage plans, IMG becomes more competitive (using our limited example). You will find some travel insurance coverages are also provided, making this option a consideration if you’re looking for a medical-specific plan.

Your criteria could change the comparisons entirely. That’s why a travel insurance comparison website is an essential tool when seeking out the best value in travel insurance.

Bottom Line: While our limited comparisons showed IMG plans as being higher than the competitors, this may not be the case for your specific trip and policy preferences. Plans that focused on medical coverage tended to be more competitive. Always compare options to find the best value for you.

To Point-of-Sale Coverage

Point of Sale Travel Insurance

The coverage options provided at checkout when you purchase a flight, vacation package, or other travel, can be limited. Additionally, the coverage is focused on cancellation and interruption coverage and only for the specific reasons listed.

Point of Sale Travel Insurance 1

To illustrate how IMG would stack up against point-of-sale coverage, we looked at the coverage and cost of insuring the same flight as the point-of-sale coverage above. For just a few dollars more, with IMG you would have emergency medical and evacuation coverage, and trip delay coverage. The point-of-sale plan covers just trip cancellation/interruption for up to 100% of the trip cost.

Bottom Line: In our limited example, even a budget policy purchased from IMG offers more coverage than a point-of-sale policy of a similar price. Always compare prior to purchasing, as rates will vary based on trip criteria.

IMG Claims

If you need medical treatment during your travels, in many cases IMG can work directly with the medical provider. But if you also need to file a medical claim, the best way to get started is to complete the online claim form .

As the filing of a claim for a baggage delay can be quite different than filing a medical claim, and the documentation required will certainly differ, you’ll want to begin by using a claim form designed for your specific type of loss.

You can select the associated form on the company’s claim center website . Each individual claim form lists the unique required documentation you will need to submit for that type of claim.

You can also contact the company by calling 866-243-7524, 317- 655-4500, or 317-655-9796. On each claim form, there is also an address, phone number, fax number, and email that may differ depending on the type of claim.

Be aware that there are deadlines for reporting claims and submitting all of the required documentation and these timeframes can differ depending on the type of claim.

Bottom Line: The best way to submit a claim is by completing the online claim form specific to the type of claim, which is available on the company’s claim center website. On the claim form you will find the associated phone number, address, email address, and fax number to help facilitate your claim should you need this additional information.

Be aware that some of the plans IMG offers may provide secondary coverage versus primary coverage. This means that you must first file a claim with any other insurance that may apply.

You can feel comfortable purchasing a policy from IMG as you’ll have 10 days from the date of purchase to review the plan and get a full refund if you’re not satisfied.

We were able to obtain a quote for travelers up to and including age 99. Coverage levels and pricing vary by age.

While we have focused on individual travel and medical insurance in this article, IMG does have an Enterprise division that provides services to corporations and other organizations.

IMG is a good choice as a travel insurance company due to its financial stability and the fact it has been in business so long. However, you’ll need to compare plans and pricing with competitors to make sure the company provides the best value for you personally when purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance plan.

If you’re looking at insuring a single trip of short duration, the company can provide solid value over point-of-sale policies by delivering more coverage for similar economic outlay.

Additionally, the company’s travel medical insurance plans with primary coverage could provide you with solid medical coverage during your travels for minimal cost.

How Much Does IMG Global Medical Insurance Cost?

The cost of your IMG Global Expat Medical Insurance plan is based on several factors. Your age and your destination will each affect your IMG health insurance premium. You can also make choices in several areas to get the precise coverage you need at the right price.

Choose from two coverage areas:

  • Worldwide or
  • Worldwide Excluding the U.S., Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Singapore, and Taiwan

Select the coverage area that best reflects your geographic area of need. Each provides full coverage, but premiums reflect the cost of care in different parts of the world. Regardless of your coverage area, you maintain the freedom to choose your provider.

Multiple deductible options—A deductible is a cost you agree to pay out of pocket before your insurance begins to pay for services. Your premium will be reduced, but you may have to pay some bills alone.

IMG offers seven different deductible options, all with different premium levels. Additionally, your deductible can be reduced up to 50% to a maximum of $2,500.

Four premium modes – You can pay your entire premium upfront for bigger savings or monthly to spread costs throughout the year. Choose one of these four premium modes.

  • Annual (biggest savings)
  • Semi-annual

IMG Global Medical Plan FAQ

For who is img global medical plan designed.

  • Coverage for expatriate professionals, individuals or families living or working abroad
  • Contract employees living and working abroad
  • Seniors who reside six months or longer outside the U.S. per year
  • Digital nomads who travel the globe and need coverage worldwide

We recommend a group international plan for groups of 5 or more. A business travel insurance plan may be a better option for your organization's employees if they are abroad for less than a year.

What are other eligibility criteria?

This plan is available to individuals and families of all nationalities.

U.S. citizens must plan to leave the U.S. on or before their effective date (or renewal date) and reside outside the U.S. for at least 6 out of the next 12 months.

Coverage for non-U.S. citizens is worldwide, although certain eligibility restrictions may apply to non-U.S. citizens residing in the U.S.

Persons from 14 days to 74 years old may apply for coverage.

What should I expect during the underwriting process?

The IMG Global Medical Insurance plan is a medically underwritten plan, which means that your family’s medical status and history will be used to determine your eligibility for coverage. Once you submit your application, an underwriter will review it within five business days. Within that period, you will hear back from the underwriters, and they will do one of the following:

  • Issue coverage and complete your application
  • Request further documentation regarding your past medical history
  • Apply a rider to your coverage that limits or excludes certain medical conditions
  • Apply a premium increase due to your medical and/or family history
  • Deny coverage

You will be notified of the status of your application once complete or if further information is needed. You will be notified if a rider or premium increase is added to your plan. If you are issued a rider, you will receive a 30-day ‘free look’ period. If you do not like the proposed coverage terms, you can cancel coverage within the 30-day free look, and you will receive a full refund of your premium.

For short-term coverage or a plan without underwriting requirements, consider an IMG Travel Insurance plan.

Can I renew IMG Global Medical Insurance coverage each year?

Subject to the plan's terms set by the plan administrator, International Medical Group , this policy is annually renewable , and coverage is continuous when renewed. Before the end of each period of coverage (12 months), you will receive renewal information. You must continue to meet the eligibility requirements outlined above to renew. You have the option to renew online, or you may complete a paper application. There are no additional medical questions at renewal, and IMG can work with you to provide flexible renewal options. Please select your deductible and plan option carefully, as you cannot select a lower deductible or increase your plan option when you renew your coverage.

Lifetime medical coverage is available if you are enrolled in the Global Medical Insurance program by your 65th birthday and maintain continuous coverage to age 75. Before your 75th birthday, you will receive a summary of benefits for the Global Senior Plan®, and an enrollment form for coverage. There is no additional medical underwriting. You simply need to review the benefits and promptly complete and return the enrollment form with your premium. Your benefits may be limited once you transition to the Senior Plan.

What are my payment options?

The IMG Global Medical plan can be purchased online using a credit card or debit card. When applying for the plan, you will be able to choose your frequency of payment from paying annually, semi-annually, quarterly, or monthly, with discounts available when you pay for a larger period of time at once. While your payment details are required to be included on your online application, your card will not be charged until the underwriting review process has been completed.

What about coverage for those over the age of 75?

Lifetime medical coverage is available only if you are enrolled in the plan by your 65th birthday and maintain continuous coverage to age 75. Before your 75th birthday, you will receive a summary of benefits for a new plan, Global Senior Plan® , and an enrollment form for coverage. There is no additional medical underwriting. You need to review the benefits and complete and return the enrollment form with your premium.

When you request a quote for coverage from our licensed agents, they will provide you with different options for your situation. You can ask your agent about coverage for people over age 65.

What is the refund policy or quality guarantee?

Once you are accepted into the plan, IMG gives subscribers 15 days to review the fulfillment kit contents. If during that 15-day period you find that you are not satisfied with the plan, you may submit a written request for cancellation and a full refund of your premium. See the Certificate of Insurance for full details.

Cancellation requests received after this 15-day period will be granted at the sole discretion of IMG as the plan administrator. Any refund you may receive will be based on an established refund schedule, not a pro-rated basis. See the Certificate of Insurance for full details.

What does Usual Reasonable and Customary (URC) mean?

Usual Reasonable and Customary, or URC, is a term that insurance companies use to describe a limitation on their responsibility to pay for eligible medical expenses. Basically, URC refers to the fee typically charged by a provider for a specific procedure in a specific geographic area.

International Medical Group (IMG) Travel Insurance Review (2024)

Sarah Horvath Photo

Sarah Horvath is a finance writer and researcher based in New York City. She specializes in writing about home warranties, insurance and home financial protection.

Tori Addison Photo

Tori Addison is an editor who has worked in the digital marketing industry for over five years. Her experience includes communications and marketing work in the nonprofit, governmental and academic sectors. A journalist by trade, she started her career covering politics and news in New York’s Hudson Valley. Her work included coverage of local and state budgets, federal financial regulations and health care legislation.

If you’re looking for comprehensive medical insurance for your upcoming trip, International Medical Group (IMG) is worth considering. Founded in the late 1980s, IMG is a worldwide travel insurance provider offering up to $8 million in emergency care and medical evacuation coverage — more than 10x that of many competing insurance providers. Special policies are also available for students and seniors, with premiums below $100 per person on many basic plans.

With lower premiums and higher-than-average coverage limits, IMG can be an appealing choice to insure your next international excursion. However, we believe there are other better options for travel insurance coverage.

Our Take on International Medical Group (IMG)

In our comprehensive review of travel insurance providers , we awarded IMG a total score of 4.4 out of 5 stars, with its standout offering being a diverse range of plan options. From students traveling with a visa requiring medical insurance to sports professionals who need equipment insurance, IMG offers a selection of more than 10 plans for most international travelers. Comparatively, many travel insurance providers only offer up to three plan options.

IMG’s policies also have coverage limits that go above and beyond most other travel insurance providers. For example, medical limits go up to $8 million with IMG, while most other companies offer options up to $1 million or less. This can make IMG an appealing choice for travelers concerned about potential medical emergencies. IMG also offers a wide range of added coverages not seen with most other providers — like benefits toward missed flights and pet kennel bills — though inclusions vary by plan.

However, be sure to read IMG customer reviews before you buy. Negative customer reviews on the company’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot profiles consistently mention a failure to pay out claims and negative experiences with customer service professionals. IMG also does not include baggage delay benefits in its most economic plans.

IMG is not the only travel insurance provider available — and the best provider for your needs will vary depending on the details of your trip. Browse the table below to learn more about additional coverage options from other providers.

The destination you are traveling to can also play a role in the best travel insurance provider for your needs. For example, if you are traveling to a rural area with limited access to a hospital, you might want to prioritize a policy with comprehensive medical evacuation benefits.

Explore travel insurance providers based on destination using the dropdown below.

What Does IMG Travel Insurance Cover?

One of the most unique features of IMG travel insurance is the variety of policy options it offers. In most parts of the U.S., you can access 15 unique travel insurance plans, which vary based on the level of coverage and types of benefits included. Medical coverage limits are available with benefits up to $8 million, and you can also find millions worth of evacuation coverage. If you are an older traveler or traveling to a more remote area where you could need medical care, IMG’s higher-tier plans could be worth the cost.

IMG also offers specific plan options for students traveling on visas that require a certain level of medical insurance, visitors to the Schengen area and even sports travelers looking for equipment protections. If you are a student or need unique coverage inclusions, IMG’s range of policy choices might offer a more customized fit than other providers.

Let’s take a look at a few of IMG’s most popular travel insurance policy options and what each covers.

iTravelInsured Travel SE

The iTravelInsured Travel SE policy is IMG’s primary option for travel medical and cancellation coverage. This plan includes the following major benefits:

  • 100% trip cancellation coverage
  • 150% trip interruption coverage
  • $125 per person per day trip delay benefits (up to $2,000)
  • $150 to cover airline change fees
  • $250,000 worth of primary medical expense coverage ($1,000 limitation on dental care)
  • $500,000 worth of medical evacuation coverage

The policy also includes extra benefits, like a supplement for pet kennel expenses and missed connection costs. Overall, the iTravelInsured Travel SE policy is an affordable option that provides competitive benefits compared to other major travel insurance providers.

Patriot International Platinum

The Patriot International Platinum plan is a medical-oriented travel insurance policy offering customizable medical insurance with up to $8 million worth of coverage. This maximum benefit is significantly higher than other providers, making the Patriot International plan a strong choice for anyone concerned about international health insurance bills. This plan also offers benefits for:

  • Emergency medical evacuation up to your total medical coverage limit
  • $25,000 toward natural disaster evacuation services
  • $100,000 toward politically-oriented evacuations
  • $50,000 worth of accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage

With lower premiums and customizable medical maximums, this policy can also be a strong choice for students who need to maintain medical coverage as a term of a study abroad visa.

IMG’s comparison platform makes it easy to determine which plans best fit your coverage needs and budget.

iTravelInsured Travel LX

Travelers looking for both comprehensive travel and medical coverage can explore the all-inclusive iTravelInsured Travel LX plan. This plan includes:

  • $250 per person per day trip delay benefits (up to $2,000)
  • $300 to cover airline change fees
  • $500,000 worth of primary medical expense coverage ($1,000 limitation on dental care)
  • $1 million worth of medical evacuation coverage
  • Up to $10,000 toward search and rescue expenses
  • $2,000 in sports equipment rental coverage

Like the SE plan detailed above, the iTravelInsured Travel LX policy includes extended additional benefits for pets and other considerations you might have abroad. This policy can be most beneficial for covering a high-value trip or adventure travel to a rural destination thanks to the extra evacuation and emergency search benefits.

The table below summarizes IMG’s most popular plans compared to some other policy options.

IMG Add-On Options

Add-ons, or riders, are benefits you can include in your policy, often for an extra fee. Below are optional add-ons and features available in higher-value IMG plans:

  • Accident death and dismemberment
  • Cancel for any reason coverage
  • Change fee coverage
  • Interruption for any reason coverage
  • Natural disaster evacuation coverage
  • Political and personal security evacuation coverage
  • Rental car damage and theft coverage
  • Pet kennel coverage
  • Search and rescue coverage
  • Sports equipment rental coverage

What’s Not Covered by IMG Travel Insurance?

While IMG offers higher medical benefits than some other insurers, its policies do not cover every situation. The following are some exclusions laid out in IMG’s most popular travel insurance plans and where you might want to shop for coverage if these inclusions are important to you.

  • Pre-existing conditions: If you’re older or have a pre-existing medical condition that could affect your trip, you might want to look for a travel insurance provider that offers a longer window to add this coverage. With IMG, you must purchase travel insurance coverage 14 days after your initial trip deposit to have medical coverage extended to pre-existing conditions.
  • Business equipment: While IMG offers specialized policies with inclusive athletic equipment coverage, it does not have policies with business equipment coverage . If you are traveling for work, consider a provider like Berkshire Hathaway, which offers this coverage as an optional add-on.
  • Electronics and jewelry: Like most travel insurance providers, IMG’s policies include exclusions for the full value of expensive items like jewelry, cell phones and laptops. If you must bring these items, consider a provider like HTH Worldwide that offers added rider choices for high-value items.

Cost of IMG Travel Insurance

According to our review, the average IMG traveler can expect to pay about $224 for premium coverage. While this number is comparable to other travel insurance providers, IMG also offers medical policy options for as low as $30 per traveler. If you are shopping on a budget, we recommend browsing IMG’s large list of plan options, as customizable coverage choices can help you adjust pricing.

The type of trip you are planning also plays a role in pricing. Browse the table below to learn more about how trip details can influence the price you pay for travel insurance.

Use the chart below to compare IMG's average cost to competitors:

IMG International Travel Insurance Cost

The price of international travel insurance varies depending on the benefits offered. To help you get a better idea of what you might pay for IMG’s top travel insurance policies, we requested quotes for a 30-year-old couple planning a $7,000, week-long trip to the United Kingdom. The table below summarizes the quotes we gathered.

*Quotes in the table above were collected directly from the provider’s website, and are accurate as of November 2023. Pricing for Patriot plans reflects a $2 million medical coverage limit.

IMG Domestic Travel Insurance Cost

IMG’s most popular travel insurance policy options also offer coverage for U.S. travelers taking domestic vacations across the country. To help you get an idea of the cost of IMG’s domestic coverage, we requested quotes for a 35-year-old American traveler taking a domestic vacation valued at $2,000. The table below reflects the quotes we received.

*Quotes in the table above were collected directly from the provider’s website, and are accurate as of November 2023.

IMG's iTravelInsured Customer Reviews

IMG gets many positive reviews on review sites that say the company provides transparent policies that clearly list what’s covered. However, there are some negative reviews about glitches with the IMG website and general frustration with website performance. Others have complaints about canceling trips and not receiving expected coverage.

Overall, IMG Global gets 4.6 out of 5 stars from nearly 7,000 reviews on Trustpilot. Here are four examples:

“This website makes it very easy to find what type of insurance I need. I have been using IMG for five years for all my international trips.” — Tao “The process is clear and simple, and the product is well-priced for an extensive range of coverage. I use it for both business and personal travel.” — Meagan “The website application process is frustrating. I had to continue to clear my cache five times to get it to work… One more time of not working, and I was going with someone else. Fortunately, it worked on the sixth attempt…” — Warren “We never traveled to Turks and Caicos but they charged us the full amount even if we canceled more than one month before the trip!” — Luca Montebugnoli

We reached out to a representative by email for comment on the reviews above and received the following statement:

“At IMG, our mission is to be an exceptionally innovative partner that provides creative and practical solutions, and our staff strives to ‘Be There’ to protect and enhance the well-being of our customers every day.

We appreciate the time our customers take to share the experiences they’ve had with our company to further connect others to the travel and health safety solutions we provide for those traveling, living or working away from home.

We understand how important it is to provide high-quality service to our customers, which is evidenced by our overwhelmingly positive Trustpilot reviews, and we are committed to providing every customer with the best possible experience.”

How To File a Claim with IMG Travel Insurance

The fastest and easiest way to file a claim with IMG travel insurance is through your customer portal. Here is a quick breakdown of how to use it:

  • To file a claim, click the “My Claims” button in your customer portal. Here, you will be guided through next steps to provide documentation based on your claim type.
  • Gather supporting documents to upload to your portal. The type of documents you need will vary depending on the type of claim you’re filing. For example, if you need reimbursement for travel expenses, you can provide a trip invoice, itinerary or confirmation showing details of your trip.
  • After submitting your claim, a representative will review your documentation and compare it with coverage on your policy. The representative should get back in touch with you to arrange a reimbursement.

IMG also allows you to file a claim through the mail or using a fax machine. Explore policy documents and claims forms you might need using IMG’s claims center .

Is IMG a Good Choice for Travel Insurance?

Overall, IMG is a strong travel insurance provider for both international and domestic coverage. Its higher medical limits can be appealing to those worried about medical coverage or older travelers using Medicare, which does not offer primary health insurance benefits abroad. IMG’s policies can also be worthwhile options for students, athletes and anyone else with unique visa-based coverage needs.

However, customer reviews suggest some issues with customer service and claims handling. While not representative of every experience, this might be an issue for customers who value concierge-level coverage or those worried about traveling abroad for the first time. No matter your coverage needs, we recommend getting a quote from at least three competing providers to find the best plan at the right price for your trip.

A provider with robust coverage earns full points, including baggage delay and loss, COVID-19 coverage, emergency evacuation and medical coverage, trip delay and cancellation coverage, and more. Companies also receive points for offering a variety of policy add-ons like accidental death and dismemberment, extreme sports, valuable items, cancel for any reason coverage and more.

We also reward travel insurance providers that cover more than 100% of trip costs in the event of cancellations or interruptions.
  • Company service and reviews (17%): We look for indicators that a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. Companies with an established global resource network, 24/7 emergency hotline, mobile app, multiple ways to file a claim and concierge services score higher in this category. Planning a vacation can be an exciting endeavor. Regardless of where and why you're traveling, it's vital to ensure that you're protected if something goes wrong. And this is why travel insurance is important.

In this review of iTravelInsured Travel Insurance , a well-known name in the industry, we'll share the company's insurance offerings, look at premium costs, and let you know how to file a claim. We'll also share a couple of comparisons between iTravelInsured and some of the best travel insurance companies .

iTravelInsured Travel Insurance Summary

iTravelInsured is a collection of travel insurance policies provided by International Medical Group, more commonly known as IMG. One of the industry leaders in travel insurance, IMG provides policies for travel medical insurance , international health insurance, and comprehensive travel insurance. iTravelInsured offers trip protection and medical coverage across six plans.

With six plans to choose from, including a low cost plan and a plan for adventure sports travelers, customers are likely to find a plan that suits their needs. iTravelInsured's Travel Lite plan is particularly interesting, managing to keep its rates relatively low, even for older travelers.

We'll get into more details about iTravelInsured's customer reviews, but it's worth mentioning at the top that the claims process for iTravelInsured isn't great, with many customers reporting unresponsiveness, partial claims payouts, and months-long processing times.

Types of Policies Offered by iTravelInsured

iTravelInsured offers six primary plans: Travel Lite, Travel SE, Travel LX, Travel LX Basic, Travel Sport, and Travel Essential. Each plan has different coverage limits and various types of protection.

Here's a look at what you'll get with each plan:

Determining which of these plans will best suit your needs will depend on your budget and which coverages matter most to you.

For example, the Travel LX plan offers the highest coverage limits but will also cost the most. In comparison, the Travel Lite plan is designed for budget-conscious travelers. Its coverage limits are lower than the other plans, but you'll also pay less for your policy.

Additional Coverage Options from iTravelInsured

iTravelInsured only offers two optional add-ons to its top-tier Travel LX plan. These include CFAR (cancel for any reason) and IFAR (interruption for any reason) coverage. And these add-ons must be purchased within 20 days of the initial trip deposit.

iTravelInsured Travel Insurance Cost

The premium you pay will depend on various factors, including the age of the travelers, destination, and total trip costs. The  average cost of travel insurance  is 4% to 8% of your travel costs.

After inputting some personal information, such as your age and state of residence, along with your trip details, like travel dates, destination, and trip costs, you'll get an instant quote for iTravelInsured plans available for your trip. And from there, it's easy to compare each option based on your coverage needs and budget.

Now let's look at a few examples to estimate iTravelInsured coverage costs.

As of 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following travel insurance quotes:

  • iTravelInsured Travel Lite: $ 87.77
  • iTravelInsured Travel SE: $100.43
  • iTravelInsured Travel LX: $183.06
  • iTravelInsured Travel Sport: $194.01

Premiums for iTravelInsured plans are between 2.9% and 6.5% of the trip's cost, well within the average cost of travel insurance.

iTravelInsured provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • iTravelInsured Travel Lite: $117.74
  • iTravelInsured Travel SE: $135.36
  • iTravelInsured Travel LX: $235.53
  • iTravelInsured Travel Sport: $246.91

Once again, premiums for iTravelInsured plans are between 2.9% and 6.2% of the trip's cost, within and below the expected range of travel insurance costs.

A Texas family consisting of two 40-year-old parents with a 10-year-old and 4-year-old on a two-week trip to Australia for $20,000:

  • iTravelInsured Travel Lite: $687.18
  • iTravelInsured Travel SE: $807.78
  • iTravelInsured Travel LX: $1,270.92

Quotes for this trip cost between 3.4% and 6.4%, within and below the average cost of travel insurance.

A 65-year-old couple looking to escape New Jersey for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following quotes:

  • iTravelInsured Travel Lite: $423.86
  • iTravelInsured Travel SE: $449.74
  • iTravelInsured Travel LX: $662.28

Quotes for this trip cost between 7.1% and 11%, which is generally higher than the average cost of travel insurance. Older people often pay more for insurance, and iTravelInsured is no exception. That said, its policies for older travelers aren't as high as some of its competitors.

iTravelInsured Customer Service and Claims Experience

IMG, the company that operates iTravelInsured, is very well reviewed, receiving an average of 4.6 stars out of five on Trustpilot and a 4.22 on Squaremouth. Many customers spoke highly of the company's buying process, saying that the price was reasonable, the application was easy to complete, and customer service agents were polite and knowledgeable.

That said, customer reviews of IMG's claims don't line up with the volume of outstanding reviews it has. Customers reported claims taking several months to process. Many of the five-star reviews of IMG's claims services are filed by people who have recently filed, but haven't heard back yet.

In addition to long wait times, customers also reported that claims agents were largely unavailable, and customer service representatives, while polite, were ultimately powerless in escalating a claim. Additionally, multiple customers reported only receiving partial compensation without explanation. One customer mentioned that mental illness was not included as a covered illness, writing, "Almost a medieval view of what constitutes an illness."

While IMG and iTravelInsured aren't alone when it comes to a long, uncommunicative claims process, it's even more concerning that IMG's customer service team doesn't respond to any reviews, which is often a good way to reach your insurance provider.

iTravelInsured vs. AIG Travel Guard

We'll look at a couple of different plans from both iTravelInsured and AIG Travel Guard  to compare and contrast the coverage between the two companies.

We'll start with iTravelInsured's Travel Essential and AIG's Essential plans.

AIG's Essential plan covers trip cancellations with up to $100,0000 in coverage, up to $150,000 in emergency medical evacuation expenses, and up to $100 per day ($500 total) for delays of 12 or more hours, and coverage for lost or delayed baggage.

In comparison, iTravelInsured's Travel Essential offers trip cancellation coverage of 100% of the trip cost, $0 of emergency medical evacuation coverage, up to $2,000 (with a $250 daily limit) for trip delays of 12+ hours, and no lost or delayed baggage coverage.

So in this instance, it's pretty easy to decipher the main differences between these plans. And to see that you'll get much better coverage with AIG's Essential plan.

Now we'll look at both of the highest-tier plans from each provider.

AIG's Deluxe plan, the highest-tier option, provides trip cancellation coverage of up to $150,000, emergency medical evacuation coverage of up to $1,000,000, up to $200 per day ($1,000 maximum) reimbursement for travel delays of 12+ hours, and coverage for delayed or lost baggage.

iTravelInsured's Travel LX plan provides trip cancellation coverage of 100% of the trip cost, up to $1,000,000 in emergency medical evacuation, up to $2,500 with a $250 daily limit )reimbursement for travel delays of 6+ hours, and relatively high limits on coverage for delayed or lost baggage.

In this instance, the Travel LX policy provides superior coverage. But it's important to always get quotes for your particular situation to find the policy that best fits your needs and budget.

iTravelInsured vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Both iTravelInsured and Allianz offer various plans with varying levels of coverage designed for different types of travelers. These include single-trip plans and policies covering those who take multiple trips per year.

Allianz's most popular single-trip option is the OneTrip Prime plan, which offers trip cancellation coverage up to $100,000, trip interruption coverage up to $150,000, emergency medical coverage for $50,000, coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000, and up to $800 in travel delay coverage.

iTravelInsured's most popular plan is the Travel SE plan, which provides trip cancellation coverage of 100% of trip costs, trip interruption coverage of 150% of trip costs, emergency medical coverage for $250,000 (primary coverage), coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,500 ($250 per item), and up to $2,000 ($125 daily limit) in travel delay coverage for delays of 12+ hours. Overall, it offers more coverage than Allianz in this example.

Again, it's best to compare quotes using your personal and trip details to determine which policy is the best for you. Various factors will determine the final cost of any of these policies.

iTravelInsured vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

If you have a travel credit card, check its insurance coverages before purchasing a travel insurance plan from iTravelInsured or another company. That way, you won't be paying twice for coverage you might already have! Some basic insurance coverages, like primary rental car insurance, are offered through many travel rewards credit cards.

It's worth considering whether your credit card travel protection is primary or secondary. Secondary coverage will only kick in after any other relevant travel insurance policies you have. And note that insurance provided through a credit card likely won't cover medical issues, just things like trip and baggage delays.

Once you're clear on the coverage you have through your credit cards, you can purchase travel insurance to fill in the gaps.

See our guide to the best credit cards with travel insurance.

iTravelInsured Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Yes, iTravelInsured is great for international trips, offering coverage for medical emergencies, evacuations, and adventure sports.

iTravelInsured offers adventure sports coverage in its Travel Sport plan, with coverage for sports rental equipment, medical emergency coverage for hazardous sports, and search and rescue.

Customer reviews typically indicate that iTravelInsured has an efficient claims processing system, characterized by timely responses and a supportive claims handling team.

Coverage for pre-existing conditions depends on the iTravelInsured plan you purchase. Its Travel Lite plan doesn't offer pre-existing condition waivers , but its Travel SE and Travel LX plans do, as long as you purchase your policy within the specified window. You must purchase a Travel SE policy within 20 days of your initial trip payment and your Travel LX within 24 hours of your final trip payment.

iTravelInsured stands out for its variety of plans, long trip lengths, and lower rates.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed iTravelInsured

We looked at a variety of factors in reviewing the travel insurance plans offered by iTravelInsured. We also compared them to plans offered by other reputable travel insurance companies. And considered things like coverage limits, premiums costs, available add-ons, and more.

Because the costs and available coverage depend primarily on the specific traveler's personal and trip details, it's best to compare a number of different options to determine which fits your needs. That way you'll know you're getting the right amount of coverage aligns with your needs and your budget.

Russian Federation Travel Insurance Requirements

Last updated: 03/07/2024

Russia Travel Insurance Requirements

The U.S. Embassy Moscow does not advise travel to Russia as the embassy has limited capacity to assist U.S. travelers due to the Covid-19 pandemic. There is currently also a Level 4 travel advisory for the country by the U.S Department of State, advising U.S citizens not to travel to Russia due to ongoing conflict.

Travelers from foreign countries are required to have a visa to travel to Russia. For travelers from outside countries to obtain the required visa for entry into Russia, medical travel insurance is a necessity. The policy is required to last for the traveler’s entire trip to Russia, but there is not a minimum amount needed.

Squaremouth’s Travel Insurance Recommendations

Although there is not a specific dollar amount required to visit Russia, Squaremouth recommends travelers buy a policy with at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage, and at least $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage. These are the standard amounts recommended for international travel. This coverage is reimbursement-based, meaning the traveler is typically required to pay their medical expenses upfront and then file a claim for reimbursement when they return home.

The Emergency Medical benefit of travel insurance can reimburse travelers for the costs of medical treatment in the event of an illness or injury during their trip. This includes physician services, ambulance expenses, and other costs of treatment.

The Medical Evacuation benefit can transport a traveler to the nearest adequate hospital in the event of a medical emergency. If the treating physician determines the traveler should return home for better treatment, this benefit can also cover those costs.

While medical benefits are the only requirement, many travelers may opt to cover their trip costs too. Travelers have the option to purchase Trip Cancellation coverage to protect their prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. This benefit can cover events such as cancellations or interruptions due to sickness, weather, or terrorism.

How road trip insurance works

How to choose between road trip travel insurance companies, best plans for road trip travel insurance, other tips for road trip travel insurance, top cards with travel insurance for road trips, road trip travel insurance recapped.

There’s nothing quite like breezing down a highway with the windows down, the wind in your hair and a cooler full of sodas in the back seat. Whether you’re traveling alone or enjoying a road trip with friends or family, you’ll want to be sure that you’re covered with travel protections on your drive. This is as true whether you're embarking on a classic American road trip — like U.S. Route 66 — are or braving the roadways in a foreign country, in your own car or a rented vehicle.

Let’s take a look at road trip travel insurance, how it works and the best plans for auto travel insurance to suit your needs.

Road trips aren't immune to disruptions, and road trip insurance works similarly to travel insurance . Most plans require purchase before your trip begins and cover your prepaid expenses.

For rental cars

Not all third-party travel insurance policies automatically include coverage for a rental vehicle. Seek out plans that provide rental car insurance specifically — or book your car with a credit card that offers these specific protections .

Rental car travel insurance policies generally protect against damage to the rental vehicle only. Causes not within your control, such as collision, theft, vandalism, windstorm, fire, hail or flood damage are typically covered.

Because of the limited scope of rental car insurance, know that you may be on the hook if you’re liable for damage to other vehicles or if there’s bodily injury.

When picking up your rental car, you will likely be offered the insurance sold by the rental car company at the counter, typically called a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). You can decline this protection if you have sufficient coverage elsewhere (e.g., via a third-party policy or a credit card).

For your personal vehicle

Getting road trip insurance for your own vehicle isn't as common as travel insurance for rental cars , but it can still be a valuable consideration depending on your situation. For instance, access to roadside assistance can provide peace of mind if you are driving for long stretches in rural areas.

Finally, road tripping doesn’t end at driving a car. Other trip protections you may consider including in a travel insurance policy include medical evacuation, trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption coverage and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance . This is true whether you opt to drive your own vehicle or rent one for your trip.

» Learn more: How to find the best travel insurance

With several travel insurance companies out there, it can be difficult to narrow down the one you really need. Before buying, always get quotes from multiple businesses.

This is because coverage levels and prices can vary dramatically. Insurance aggregators such as InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner) allow you to generate multiple quotes at once, plus they include filters for sorting so you can find the right policy for you.

Here are a few things to consider when looking for road trip insurance:

Whether you’re renting a car.

Where you're traveling.

Whether you already have car insurance.

What types of coverage you’re interested in.

If you’re also planning on flying, cruising or using a ferry.

How long you’ll be gone.

The cost of the plan.

To figure out the best road travel insurance, we combed a variety of insurance providers to check out their offerings.

Our quotes were built using a hypothetical 37-year-old from California taking a road trip throughout the United States. The total trip time was 15 days, and the total trip cost was $2,700. Here were the top contenders.

IMG’s iTravelInsured Travel SE plan came out significantly cheaper than competitors’ plans at just $100.43. This includes primary rental car coverage and a whole host of trip protections.

$250,000 in primary emergency medical coverage .

Pre-existing conditions covered.

Rental car coverage is only for collision, theft or damage to the vehicle.

$40,000 rental car coverage maximum.

HTH Worldwide

HTH Worldwide is another top option for travel insurance for car trips. Coming in at $185.29, the TripProtector Preferred plan provides up to $35,000 for rental car coverage, as well as other unique coverage options.

USI Affinity Travel Insurance Services

USI Affinity’s Diamond plan rang in at $187, just a little more than HTH Worldwide’s plan. While it includes rental car insurance, the limit is quite low, making this a better option for those who are driving their own vehicles.

Travel delay starting at six hours.

$1 million limit for medical evacuation and repatriation.

$50,000 limit for 24-hour AD&D.

$1,000 rental car insurance maximum.

$100 deductible for rental car insurance.

Maximum trip length of 30 days.

AXA Assistance USA

travel medical insurance img

AXA Assistance USA is our final recommendation due to its nonmedical evacuation policy, which will transport you to safety during a natural disaster or time of political or civil unrest. This can be especially important if you plan on driving somewhere remote with unknown weather conditions. The total for AXA’s Gold plan came in at $215.

$50,000 in nonmedical evacuation.

$35,000 in rental car coverage.

Includes coverage for sporting equipment.

Minimum 12-hour travel delay before benefits kick in.

$25,000 limit for 24-hour AD&D.

Max of $35,000 in rental car coverage.
