Lohagad Fort Trek: A Day trip from Pune

Lohagad Fort Trek: One day trip from Pune

Last Updated on March 5, 2024 by admin

Lohagad Fort is a popular day trip from Pune and especially visited in monsoon. Check out this guide on Lohagad Fort Trek.

Monsoon season in Pune means heading to the Western Ghats. The first rains are especially special and if it is a weekend then day trips around Pune are for trekking, nature walks, camping and chasing waterfalls.

Pune’s surroundings are nature’s bounty thanks to the Sahyadri hills of Western ghats. I reminisce about one such day trip from Pune to Lohagad wherein I contemplated if the Lohagad Fort trek would be as easy as they say it is.

About Lohagad Fort

Lohagad is one of the historical citadels situated on a hillock in the Lonavala region of Maharashtra.

Lohagad Fort is said to be one of the must-visit places in Maharashtra, especially for trekking enthusiasts.

Lohagad in Marathi translates to ‘Iron Fort’ and is backed by the rich history and architectural brilliance which makes it a favourite and a quick getaway for the students, IT professionals and BPO employees of Pune. Don’t get me wrong, others enjoy it equally!

Lohagad Fort divides the river basins of Indrayani and Pavna and is situated at an elevation of 1,033 meters above mean sea level.

Lohagad is connected to the neighbouring Visapur Fort which is on its eastern side. The fort is still intact and in a good condition as compared to many others in Maharashtra. Lohagad has been declared a protected monument by the Archeology Survey of India (ASI).

Talking about climbing forts how about walking on the Second Longest Wall in the World?

About Lohagad Fort

History of Lohagad Fort

The history of this fort is associated with the great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji. Shivaji Maharaj had captured Lohagad in 1648 and it was handed over to Mughals in 1665 according to the Treaty of Purandar. After five years, the Marathas recaptured it in 1670 and it was used as storage to keep wealth.

It is believed that several other dynasties, such as Rashtrakutas, Nizamshahis, Yadavas, Chalukyas, Mughals, Bahamanis, Satavahanas , have used this fort for several purposes. This is the reason why the fort plays a prominent role in the history of Maharashtra.

Most forts in Maharashtra offer breathtaking views from the top after a hike. Read about Hike to Sinhagad Fort , a half-day trip from Pune that can be combined with a visit to Khadakwasla dam. The kanda bhajjis (onion fritters) are a must eat at Sinhagad fort.

Lohagad Fort Trek: My experience

4 friends on 2 bikes started from Pune on an early Saturday morning towards Lohagad via NH48. An hour into the ride and our stomachs already grumbled for some breakfast. We stopped in one of the roadside shacks selling ‘Chai’ and ‘Pohe’ overlooking the beautiful countryside. After the pit stop, we started again towards Kamshet.

The mundane highway traffic noise was rattled by high-speed bikers who zoomed past us.

It took us over 2 hours to cover the 55km stretch from Pune to Lohagad including the breakfast stop. We reached the Malavli village and upon asking the villagers (works so much better than GPS!), they guided us towards Lohagadwadi village. Lohagad Fort trek starting point is Malavali village for people coming by train and Lohagadwadi village for people on bikes/cars.

We came across the Gaimukh Khind exactly as the villagers had told us the directions and took a right turn towards Lohagadwadi. We promised ourselves to take a left turn soon so as to do the Visapur fort trek , next time.

A small parking area on the foothills near Lohagadwadi village makes it easy to keep the vehicles. It is possible for bikes to go up to the parking area near Bhaja caves. It is generally safe to park there. We found the stairs toward the end of the trekking trail, which would lead us straight to the fort.

500 Stairs to the top of Lohagad fort

We started on the first stairs at about 10:30 am and enquired from the visitors who had already descended the Lohagad fort steps and an enthusiastic guy replied ‘ About 500 EASY steps!

So we started climbing those easy steps breathing in the fresher air with every stair higher.

As we neared the top we came across four doors – the first one is called ‘Ganesh Darwaja’ which houses a broken shrine of Ganapati.

The second one is called ‘Narayan Darwaja’ which houses the shrine of Goddess Parvati postured in crossed legs.

The third one is called ‘Hanuman Darwaja’ which has Lord Hanuman carvings in a dilapidated state, probably because it is known to be the most ancient of all the doors in the fort.

The fourth one is called ‘Maha Darwaaja’ which has a wooden structure built in the Mughal style and the opposite of it houses the cenotaph dedicated to Aurangzeb.

Bhaja caves as seen during Lohagad fort trek

We crossed a room-like looking structure between the Narayan & Hanuman Darwaja. In the yesteryears, these were two godowns that were used for the storage purposes of ammunition. After entering the Maha Darwaja we came across an old mosque. Towards the right of Maha Darwaja, we came across ‘Laxmi Kothi’ which had many rooms. Two cannons are placed here.

We noticed that the entire Lohagad consisted of numerous structures, carvings and caves, some intact and some ruined.

The hill extended to the northwest to a fortified spur which is a 1500 meter long & 30 meters wide part of the mountain, separated from the main part. Viewing from the fort this area looks like a scorpion’s tail and hence it is called Vinchu Kata. This part of the fort acted as a watchtower to keep tabs on enemy activity and attack a launch if required.

We spent the early part of our afternoon and our grumbling stomach reminded us that we need food. The Lohagad fort trek does not have food stalls and the snacks and water that we carried were about to get over. So we decided to climb down and reach the base at 4 pm. We considered going to the nearby waterfalls but we were too tired and hungry and decided to pass it for next time.

All this trekking reminded me of trek to Triund hill .

I never heard of this place before but I’m so glad I came across your post. These photos are so lovely. I will have to add this to my never ending bucket-list. Hopefully when travel restrictions become normal again I will be able to experience this place myself one day.

' src=

Why do you go in Monsoon season? I have never experienced one, but it isn’t dangerous? I love the idea of a day with caves, waterfalls, biking and hiking.

Jamie, monsoon is huge in India as the rains make the waterfalls swell and makes the mountains green. It is only in the monsoon that we get rains so we really look forward to travelling in that season.

' src=

Wow, I loved the views of the River basins from the top of Lohagad. That must have been even better in person especially after biking for 2 hours and then trekking up 500 “easy” steps! That one gate view you captured is really beautiful. It always amazes me when you find structures in hard to reach or hidden areas that have such amazing architecture because that means great workers had to carry all of that up there & then build it!

' src=

I have fond memories from my time in Pune too, I miss the city so much! Lohagad was a trip we made often but never actually did the hike – too lazy for that! Wish I could go back now and do the hike though, it sounds amazing!

' src=

Wow, the fort really is stunning built into the rock like that! A bike ride sounds like the perfect way to start the day and get the blood flowing for the hike. And I can see what you mean about visiting during monsoon season. The surroundings really are so green and lush!

' src=

Thank you for such a detailed post! Saving it so I can refer to it when I plan a trip there, of course after the pandemic ends

Glad to know that Pooja. Lohagad is a lovely place with a short trek. I hope you have a good time, whenever you go!

You have to walk through 4 doors to enter the Lohagad fort. At first, there will be ‘Ganesh Darvaja’ then the ‘Narayan Darvaja’. You will get to see two warehouses. Then there is ancient ‘Hanuman Darvaja’ and finally entering through the ‘Maha Darvaja’ you will reach on the top of the fort.

One of the major landmarks of the Lohagad fort is the old ‘Darga’ (Mosque). You will see remnants of the court besides it. There is also a historical structure called ‘Laxmi Kothi’. You will also see cannons in front of ‘Laxmi Kothi’.

The aerial view of the fort looks like a scorpion’s tail. This extended part of the hill is called ‘Vinchu Kada’. It is well fortified and will take 15-20 minutes to reach at the very end. If you want to get a rousing 360-degree view of the surrounding, you got to visit the place.

Vinchu Kada at Lohagad fort

The history of Lohagad goes back to the period of Satvahana. Several other dynasties such as Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Chalukyas, etc. had a hold on this mighty fort.

This fort was under the Maratha Empire for most of the time. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj surrendered it to the Mughals by the treaty of Purandar in 1665. He recaptured the fort in 1670 and used it to keep the loot from Surat.

In Marathi language, Lohagad means Iron fort and it stands tall to its name.

In Peshwa time, Nana Phadnavis was living on this fort for some time. They built many structures on the fort such as a big tank and step-well in his period.

How to reach Lohagad

By private vehicle

If you are coming from Mumbai then you can come to Lonavala and from here head towards the Dudhivare Khind. It will take around 1 hour from Lonavala to reach the Lohagadvadi base village.

There is well-constructed road available till the base of the Lohagad fort.

In rainy days, there will be huge traffic due to single lane. If you are going in the monsoon, I will recommend you to park your vehicle at Bhaja village and start your trail from there.

Although there is a well-constructed road, there are many rough patches and steep turns. I have seen many experienced drivers struggling at those patches.

There are 2 different routes available from Pune. You have to take old Mumbai – Pune highway and head towards Lonavala. Just before the Lonavala, you will reach Malavli village. Take a left and then there will be a 6 km drive till the base. You can park your vehicle at Malavli village and start the trail from there.

Another route is from Paud- Kolvan and Lohagad fort. This route is not that popular and you need to drive across Pawna Lake.

There is no direct bus service available to Lohagad. You need to catch a bus till Lonavala. From here you can hire a cab to Lohagad.

The road from Lonavala to Lohagad is very scenic and passes through the famous Dudhivare Khind.

Dudhivare Khind

The nearest railway station to Lohagad fort is Lonavala railway station which is around 13 km away from Lohagad. You can take a suburban train from Lonavala till the Malavli stop if you are coming from Mumbai.

There are many suburban trains available from Pune to Lonavala. You can get off the train at Malavli station. The fort is around 6 km away from Malavli.

You can take a shared auto or taxi from here till the base. Most of the trekkers start the trail from the station itself. There is a well-constructed road from the station to the base of the fort.

There two different routes available to reach till the base of the fort. The trail from Malavli railway station is quite popular and you can cover Bhaja caves, Visapur fort and Lohagad fort in a day.

The total distance you need to cover is around 6km from Malavli station to Lohagad. In 2-3 hours, you will reach the base of the fort.

The second route is from Lonavala side. This route will take you through amazing Dudhivare Khind.

Both the roads are very scenic and end up at Lohagadwadi which is a base village for the Lohagad fort trek. From here, there are well-constructed steps to reach the top of the fort. It will take roughly 45 minutes to reach the top.

There are many historical structures, temples and Darga on the top.

One of the major highlights on the Lohagad fort, Darga (Mosque)

To go to the Vinchu Kada you need to walk towards the North-west side of the fort. In around 15 minutes you will reach the mighty Vinchu Kada.

Most of the trekkers wander only at the gate and around the temple, but the main attraction on Lohagad is Vinchu Kada and you must explore it if you want to enjoy the real beauty of the Lohagad.

You can visit the Lohagad round the year. But the best time to visit the fort is in monsoon. Lohagad fort trek is magical in monsoon days.

You will come across many waterfalls and will get splendid views as the fort is covered in the fog and mist. Don’t forget to enjoy the reverse waterfall on the fort.

Remember, there will be a huge crowd on rainy days. Avoid weekends if you don’t want to wait in a queue to climb the fort.

There are many food stalls available at the base of the fort. You will get snacks, water bottles and delicious Maharashtrian Thalis.

Camping is not allowed on the Lohagad fort. They close the doors of the fort in the late evening.

You can camp near Pawna Lake. There are many lake camping organizers available.

If you want to explore the surrounding region then stay at a hotel in Lonavala. There are many worth seeing places in the area.

Bhaja caves, Lonavala

There is a total of 22 ancient rock-cut caves and stupas built in the 2nd century and used by the Buddhist Monks. This place is very peaceful and far away from urbanization.

To go to this place you need to take a little detour from Bhaje waterfall. It’s around half km away from the main trail. It almost takes a half hour or so.

First view of Visapur fort

A small range connects Visapur Fort and Lohagad and divides the basins of the Indrayani River and Pavana River.

Visapur Fort is larger compared to Lohagad. You can visit both the forts in a single day.

During the Lohagad fort trek, you will come across the ‘Gaimukh Khind’. The left side route will take you to the Visapur Fort.

The road is well marked so there will not be any confusion.

Well, it’s always good if you start the trek as early as possible.

There are many worth seeing places on this trail. You can visit Bhaja caves by taking a little diversion from Bhaje Waterfall. It will take a maximum of an hour.

Bhaje waterfall during the Lohagad fort trek

After walking for some time you will come across ‘Gaimukh Khind’. Take a left from here and head towards the Visapur Fort. In the monsoon days, there is water flowing down from the steps and the view is stunning.

You can explore the fort and after spending an hour or so you can again come back and head towards the Lohagad Fort. This detour will take around 2 hours.

After reaching to the base of the Lohagad fort, take a rest for a while. Have your meal and then climbing around 350 rock steps you will reach the top of the Lohagad.

Precautions for Lohagad fort trek

You are going to come across our ancestors (thanks to Mr Darwin) during the trail. Yeah, monkeys. You don’t want the monkeys to steal your food, so avoid carrying any food or snacks in your hand. Beware of the monkeys. Yes, I mean it. Haha!

Wear a pair of good quality shoes, as there is lots of walking involved in this trail.

You will come across many waterfalls during the trail. The most famous one is Bhaje waterfall. And I will recommend you to enjoy the waterfall from a distance.

There are no protective bars at the edge of the cliffs. So stay away from the edge. The wind is so strong during the monsoon and it may cause an accident.

Tip for you:

If you are coming by train then there will be a huge crowd and you might not get a place to even stand up in the train.

What you can do is, get on the train which is heading towards the Lonavala from Pune. The same local will come back again to Pune, so you need not be worried about the seat. Thank me later!!

Lohagad fort trek is one of the best one-day treks near Pune and Mumbai . The trail is simple and straight forward. If you are looking for a quick escape from the busy city life then head towards the Lohagad fort. The complete trail is a long walk till the base of the fort. After climbing well-constructed steps, you will reach the top of the fort.

Lohagad Fort trek is a standout amongst the most prevalent trek points near Pune/Mumbai followed by Sinhagad, Rajmachi , Torna , Tikona , Rajgad and many more. Unlike other forts, it has stone steps leading right to the top of the fort which makes it easy even for a novice climber. Out of the numerous forts located in the region, I would rate this as one of the most effortless and secure forts to climb.

How to reach Lohagad Fort from Pune/ Mumbai

Lohagad Fort is located around 100 kms from Mumbai and 60 kms from Pune. The cheapest and convenient way to reach the fort is via railways. The nearest railhead to Lohagad Fort is Malavli station (approx. 6 kms) which is connected to Mumbai and Pune via local trains. From Malavli station,  the base of the fort “Lohagadwadi” is about an hour walk. For train bookings visit IRCTC . What I would suggest is to rent a bike from Pune/Mumbai (around 300 INR/per day). The road trip would add more fun to your entire journey.

My journey to Lohagad Fort trek from Pune

I began for Lohagad from Pune around 4:00 AM. You might be wondering why I started so early? I had been to Lohagad fort twice before this visit but couldn’t experience the sunrise from the fort. From last few weeks, the sunrise and the sunset view have been absolutely magical. I wanted to experience the same from the top of Lohagad fort.

There are mainly 2 routes to reach Lohagad – Mumbai Pune old Highway and the village route (Paud – Hadasi – Tikona). As I started a bit early, I took the highway route as they are considerably more secure. On reaching Kamshet , check Gmaps or ask a local the route of Pawna lake. Lohagad base village “Lohagadwadi” is in the close-by area to Pawna lake.

It takes around 1.5 hours to reach the base of Lohagad from Pune. If you want to avoid the trouble of asking people the exact point where the steps start for the top, just type in Loahgarh Car parking in Gmaps. To reach the top, one needs to climb around 500 steps. It can take something close to 25 minutes to 50 minutes’ contingent upon an individual’s fitness level.

Amid the climb, you will be honored with some extraordinary views of the beautiful Pawna lake and the close-by Visapur Fort. The steps lead right up to the main entrance of the fort – the Ganesh Darwaja which is opened only from 7 AM to 5 PM. Sunrise was expected to be at 7:05 AM so I was desperate to reach the top before that. With a bit of request to the guard, he opened the fort gate 15 minutes early from the designated time.

Amazing sunrise at Lohagad Fort near Pune Mumbai

The sunrise view from the top was absolutely majestic and all my endeavors to reach the fort early were justified. The fort is enormous but there is nothing much to see on the top except the encompassing area and the famous Vinchukata – a long and narrow wall-like fortification which resembles a scorpion’s tail. Apart from this, there are few temples and small ponds at the top.

Previously when I visited the Lohagad fort trek in monsoon season, the experience was totally different. It was extremely windy at the top and visibility was almost zero. This visit was more about experiencing the sunrise from the top and gazing at the nearby surroundings.

Food and stay options at Lohagad Fort

Generally, no one stays overnight due to lack of proper accommodation options. Also, the fort can be visited on a day trip from Pune/Mumbai. But if you are planning to stay, there is a village at the base where you will find a few budget options.

There are not much food options on the way to top. But yes you can find eating joints at the base of the fort where the locals serve the Maharashtrian food.

Are you a beginner looking for an easy trek for a one-day trip near Pune? The Lohagad Fort Trek is the perfect escape for you this weekend! This beautiful trek is designed in one of the strongest forts of the Maratha reign and will give you the thrills you need for your day out. Let’s explore the trek in detail!

The Long-Reigning History of Lohagad Fort

Located close to the Lonavala hill station in Maharashtra, India, Lohagad Fort is a living reminder of the region’s rich past as well as a trekker’s paradise perched atop the rugged hills of the Western Ghats, narrating tales of a bygone era and showcasing the natural beauty that envelopes its ancient walls.

The castle, known as Lohagad Fort or “Iron Fort,” was strategically positioned to watch the trade routes that passed through the Sahyadri mountain range. It is thought to have been built in the second century and has seen the rise and fall of several dynasties, including the Marathas and the Mughals. Over the years, it changed hands multiple times and became a formidable military outpost.

A fascinating part of the history of Lohagad Fort is its connection to the fabled Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji took control of the castle in 1648 but later gave it to the Mughals. The Marathas, led by Nana Phadnavis, reclaimed it in the 18th century. During the British colonial period, the fort’s strategic significance declined, and it eventually became a historical and trekking destination.

The architectural design of Lohagad Fort is a remarkable demonstration of the mastery of its builders in engineering. The castle comprises four main sections: the Vinchukata (tail of the scorpion), the Ganesh Darwaja, the Hanuman Darwaja, and the Maha Darwaja. Each section has distinctive features, from grand gates to elaborate stone carvings. The Maha Darwaja, in particular, is a testament to the military prowess of those who built it.

The castle’s layout and design synthesise military strategy and artistic beauty. The castle’s elevated position offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys, offering an insight into the difficulties faced by its defenders centuries ago. Remaining remnants of ancient structures, including reservoirs, temples, and storage rooms, become visible as one explores the fort.

In addition to being a historical relic, Lohagad Fort is a starting point for exploring the alluring natural beauty of the Western Ghats. The hike to the castle passes through verdant landscapes, thick forests, and winding pathways. In the monsoon, the area is bathed in vivid hues, with waterfalls tumbling down the hills and the air heavy with the earthy scent of moist soil. The castle’s environs become a photographer’s dream, capturing the interaction of mist and mountains and producing a surreal atmosphere. The varied flora and fauna further enhance the allure, with various birds and butterflies appearing.

In the morning:

Departing from Bhaje village, the 4-kilometre drive sets the stage for an immersive experience. The morning sun illuminates the landscape, and the roads are remarkably clean, adding to the joy of the journey. Start your day early and take advantage of the cool morning weather. The roads leading to Lohagad are not just practical routes but picturesque avenues, offering a prelude to the beauty that awaits.

· The drive to Lohagad offers a peaceful experience of nature’s peace. The cool, pleasant surroundings create a refreshing atmosphere. The roads blend into the natural beauty, meandering through hills and valleys and revealing snippets of the allure of the Western Ghats. As you drive along, you catch the first glimpse of Visapur Fort, rising majestically from the morning sky in an awe-inspiring silhouette.

Towards the Lohagad Fort Trek:

· As you approach Lohagad, the sight of Visapur Fort sets the tone for the day’s exploration; the intricate fortifications of Visapur, visible to the unaided eye, serve as a teaser of the historical richness that awaits. The scene is not just a visual delight; it sparks anticipation and curiosity about the stories hidden within the walls of these ancient forts. The journey towards Lohagad is not just a physical movement but a gradual immersion into the historical and natural tapestry of the area.

As the journey continues, Lohagad Fort’s imposing presence becomes more apparent. The surrounding landscape reveals the massive building, inspiring awe and wonder. The view of “Vinchukada,” a crucial component of the castle, is pleasing to the eye and speaks to the historical significance of the location. Imagining the sensations and thrills felt in the fort during ancient times becomes more vivid against the backdrop of this alluring scenery.

The Base of Lohagad Fort Trek—Lohagad Wadi:

Reaching the base village of Lohagad, or ‘Lohagad wadi,’ signifies the journey’s end. The village greets you with a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, a potent representation of the historical significance associated with this area. The well-arranged shops along the path provide a window into the local way of life, enabling hikers to experience the essence of rural life before beginning the last ascent.

Doing the Lohagad Fort Trek:

· The journey towards Lohagad is not just a physical climb but a voyage through time and history. The historical significance of the castle is marked by a check post run by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), where a nominal fee of Rs 25/- is charged, a small contribution towards the upkeep of this ancient marvel.

· The scenery opens as the trek continues, offering a stunning view of Pawana Lake behind the castle. This mid-trek viewpoint offers a peaceful moment for hikers to take in Lohagad’s natural beauty as the lake sits amidst hills and verdant surroundings, contrasting with the castle’s historic grandeur to create a picturesque scene.

Exploring the Gorgeous Fort:

· The four Darwajas (Ganesh Darwaja, Narayan Darwaja, Hanuman Darwaja, and Maha Darwaja) each hold a fragment of history, and passing through them is like passing through a portal into the past, revealing the glories of the fort gradually.

· Going a little farther, the fort opens into what is called ‘Vinchu Kada,’ which is like a scorpion’s tail. This section, because of its distinct topography, is a visual treat. The historical significance and the natural formations leave a memorable impression.

What An Afternoon Looks Like on the Lohagad Fort Trek:

· Trekkers can take in the natural and historical beauty around them during the midday break. Take a moment to relax at Mahadev Mandir, where the divine and the ancient meet in the heart of Lohagad. Think back on the layers of history etched into the stones of the castle and the breathtaking views that appear around every corner.

· During the day, those looking for a more daring experience can see glimpses of neighbouring forts from Lohagad’s viewpoint. These include Visapur, Tikona, Tung, Morgiri, and others, creating a panoramic view that stretches beyond the limits of Lohagad. Each fort’s unique history adds to the region’s rich historical tapestry.

· Before starting the descent, take a moment to rest and revitalise at Mahadev Mandir. The spiritual atmosphere provides a peaceful place to consider the day’s findings and recognise the connection between history and the environment.

Concluding the Lohagad Fort Trek:

· The Lohagad Fort closes promptly at 5:30 p.m. Trekkers are advised by the castle’s guards to finish exploring by 5:15 p.m. to ensure a timely departure. This rigorous schedule guarantees the fort’s preservation and the safety of its visitors.

What to Pack for the Lohagad Fort Trek?

Clothing:  Pack additional clothes in case the weather unexpectedly changes. To be comfortable throughout the trip, choose lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing. Opt for long sleeves and slacks to guard against sun exposure and any scratches from plants.

·       Trekking Shoes:  A smooth trip requires comfortable, well-fitting shoes that help avoid blisters and pain. Invest in a nice pair of trekking shoes with ankle support to handle the uneven terrain.

·       Backpack:  Bring a durable backpack to store your belongings. Look for one with cushioned shoulder straps to be comfortable on the hike. Ensure the bag has enough room for drinks, food, a first-aid kit, and extra clothing.

·       Water Bottles:  The hike to Lohagad Fort may be physically taxing, so it is important to carry enough water to stay hydrated. You may want to consider using a reusable water bottle.

·       Snacks:  Bring energy-boosting foods to nourish you during the hike, such as fruits, granola bars, and nuts. Trail mix, a handy blend of nuts and dried fruits is another great choice.

·       Weather-Appropriate Gear:  When packing for a trip during the monsoon, make sure you have a waterproof jacket, poncho, and quick-dry clothes; in milder months, carry a jacket or sweater for cold evenings. Before the journey, check the weather prediction.

·       Sun Screen:  This high terrain can expose you to harsh sunlight, so carry basics like sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat or cap to shield yourself from the sun’s rays.

·       Trekking Poles:  Trekking poles improve your balance and offer stability and support, especially on steep ascents and descents. It would help if you thought about getting foldable poles for convenient storage.

·       Navigation Gear:  Before trekking, familiarise yourself with the trail to prevent getting lost. Carry a thorough trekking route map or use a GPS gadget to guarantee you remain on the right path.

·       First-Aid Kit:  Assemble a simple first-aid bag with bandages, painkillers, antiseptic ointment, blister patches, and other personal drugs you might require. This kit can come in handy for treating small injuries or discomfort that may arise throughout the walk.

·       Trash Bags:  Follow the Leave No Trace philosophy by packing your rubbish in little trash bags, maintaining a clean trekking track, and protecting the area’s natural beauty.

·       Flashlights:  A headlamp or flashlight is necessary to explore the fort or descend after dusk. Ensure it has enough battery life, and consider bringing extra batteries.

·       Knives/Multi-Tools : A small multi-tool or knife can be useful for various tasks, from cutting rope to minor repairs. Pick a tool that will fit into your backpack with ease.

All About It

  • 1 Days

Lohagad Fort means Iron Fort in Marathi. Situated close to the hill station of  Lonavala  Khandala and 52 km northwest of Pune, Lohagad rises to an elevation of 1,033 meters, or 3,389 feet, above sea level. The Lohagad Killa is connected to the neighbouring Visapur Fort, which is on its eastern side by a small range. The range divides the basins of the Indrayani River and the Pavana River. Lohagad Pune overlooks the Pawna lake, located to the south of the mountain. The hill extends to the northwest to a fortified spur, called Vinchu Kata Scorpion's Tail, because of its resembling shape. The four large gates of Lohagad are still in good condition and reasonably intact. The fort has been declared as a protected monument by the Archaeology Survey of India. The best trekking routes near Mumbai and Pune for beginners. On the bucket list of all Mumbai hikers are places near Lonavala to visit.

Things to see at Lohagad Fort

We can reach the top of the fort by stairs. While reaching the top, we will come across four doors. The first one is called "Ganesh Darwaaja', the second one is called "Narayan Darwaaja', the third one is called "Hanuman Darwaaja" and the fourth one is called "Maha Darwaaja". Of these, Hanuman Darwaaja is the most ancient of all the doors. There are two godowns between Narayan and Hanuman Darwaaja that were used as granaries for storage. After entering the Maha Darwaaja, we come across an old 'Dargah'. Besides the Dargah, there are remnants of the court. Towards right, we come across 'Laxmi Kothi', which has many rooms. The treasury of Nana Phadnis was kept here. In front of this place are two cannons. On the western side of the fort is Vinchu Kata. It is a 1500 metre long and 30 metre wide part of the mountain, separated from the main part. Viewing from the fort, this area looks like a scorpion’s sting and hence it is called Vinchu Kata. As named, this portion was to keep a watch on the surrounding region, and any activity of the enemy in its vicinity could be tackled. Lohghad and Visapur are the most famous Lonavala Forts. Pune hikers prefer Lohghad fort near Lonavala for weekend treks.

History of lohagad fort.

Lohagad fort history over a long period of time confirms that several dynasties have been here such as Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Nizamshahis, Mughals and Marathas.

The great Maratha ruler Shri Raje Chhatrapati Shivaji captured it in 1648 CE & many other Maratha and Vidarbha rulers used this citadel, making it an important part of Maharashtra’s rich history.

This is  a historical citadel perched atop a hillock at an elevation of 3400 feet.

The fort can be reached from any of its four entrances, namely Maha Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja, Hanuman Darwaja and Narayan Darwaja.

Exquisite sculpting can be seen on the Maha Darwaja that speaks of the art and architecture prevalent in olden times. A step well and large tank constructed during the 18th century can also be found here.

About Lohagad Fort

Lohagad Trek Aerial View

To access the Lohagad Fort, one must pass through a series of four imposing gates. Commencing the journey, travelers encounter the 'Ganesh Darvaja', followed by the 'Narayan Darvaja', leading them to the sight of two ancient warehouses. Continuing the ascent, the route takes them through the venerable 'Hanuman Darvaja'. Finally, upon traversing the 'Maha Darvaja', adventurers emerge at the summit of the fort.

Among the notable landmarks adorning Lohagad Fort is the ancient 'Darga' or Mosque, serving as a testament to the fort's multicultural heritage. Adjacent to it lies the remnants of a court, echoing with whispers of historical significance. Not far away stands the 'Laxmi Kothi', an architectural marvel of yesteryears, flanked by cannons that once guarded its hallowed grounds.

Gazing down upon the fort from above, one is struck by its resemblance to the tail of a mighty scorpion. This elongated section of the hill, known as 'Vinchu Kada', stands as a bastion of strength, its fortifications guarding against the passage of time. A brisk 15 to 20-minute journey leads to its furthest reaches, where visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the surrounding landscape, an experience not to be missed.

Historical Facts about Lohagad

The historical significance of Lohagad Fort stretches back to the era of the Satavahana dynasty, with subsequent dynasties like the Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, and Chalukyas also exerting control over this formidable stronghold.

During much of its history, Lohagad Fort remained under the dominion of the Maratha Empire. Notably, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj temporarily ceded control to the Mughals as part of the treaty of Purandar in 1665. However, he reclaimed the fort in 1670, utilizing it as a repository for spoils acquired from Surat.

The name "Lohagad" itself, derived from Marathi, translates to "Iron Fort," a fitting moniker for the imposing structure.

During the Peshwa era, Lohagad Fort witnessed further development under the stewardship of Nana Phadnavis. His tenure saw the construction of significant structures within the fort precincts, including a large tank and a step-well, contributing to its strategic and logistical importance.

Best time to visit

Lohagad Fort Scorpion Tail View

Trekking to Lohagad Fort offers not only a thrilling outdoor adventure but also a chance to delve into the rich history of Maharashtra. With its breathtaking views, ancient architecture, and natural splendor, it stands as a reminder of the region's glorious past and enduring beauty. lohagad fort trek from pune

A Trek Worth Remembering - Lohagad Fort, Pune, India

Photo of Ashik Satheesh

I was in Pune for two weeks. There was a 3 day weekend coming up, and I had nothing to do. I started searching online to find out places worth visiting nearby, places that are not frequented by tourists, something historical, something worth my time. I came across a fort, called Lohagad (Iron Fort), which was pretty nearby and from what I read online, it was only a beginner’s trek. I had not trekked for a long time and my friend, who was to join me, had never trekked before. “Perfect”, I thought.

I found out from Google Maps that it lies on the Mumbai Pune Express Way. So boarding a bus from Wakad, the nearest stop from my hotel, sounded logical. We just had to get off at Malavli , the nearest point on the Express Way.

On the eve of May 1, my friend ditched me. Devastated I lay on bed that night, unsure of what to do. Slowly it dawned on me, that this is what I plan to do, to travel alone for the next one year. The world was giving me a trial run before I actually started. I decided to grab the opportunity, for if not this, I would never have the courage to carry out my other plans. And so, on the first of May 2015, after a slow breakfast, alone, I left my hotel, in search of Lohagad, a fort that I had only read online.

From Bus to Train

My trip started failing even before it started. After standing at the Wakad bus stop for nearly an hour, asking various buses, I realised that there is no bus stop at Malavli! “Was I going to have to drop my plan”, I stood there, thinking under the blazing sun. I had to choose an alternate means, the Indian Railways.

I pulled out my phone, searched for the route to the nearest station. It was almost noon. I bought half a kilogram of bananas and gulped a glass of sugarcane juice before I boarded a local passenger train, crowded as expected, but I couldn’t care less. Stopping at every other station, the train slowly moved into Malavli, and I got off.

Resting before the Show

I walked out of the station. I asked around for the route to the fort. I found a shed on my way, and decided to rest there before I started the long 6 or 7 kilometre walk. I ate few of my bananas, watching the village women wash their clothes. I lay on the bench, for an hour and then started walking.

Far away was my destination, a fort at the top of a mountain. The more I looked at the distance, the more uncertain I became. The scorching sun drank all my juices. With each step I took, the weaker and frightened I became. I kept my head low staring at my legs. I told them, “Think not of the distance, think only of the next step”, step after step and I keep moving forward.

Chaityagruha, Bhaja Caves

A short detour took me to these rock cut caves, called Bhaja Caves. It is a indeed something to behold, when you learn that these were built in the second century BC! These caves were used by Buddhists monks. The roof above the stupa is wood, lined under the rock. The room vibrated with an echo. Long ago there used to be monks praying, their voices resonating off the walls.

Looking out from Chaityagruha

The huge curved arches gave a beautiful border as you looked out.

Monk’s Residence

Besides the arched Chaityagruha are these small caves. These were the resting places for the monks. There are two beds inside each cave, carved out of rocks. Some had only one bed. Some even had windows carved.

From the Monk’s Veranda

I took a minute to sit in the monk’s veranda, carved out from the rock. Once upon a time there were monks sitting and looking out into the open.

There were even more stupas and caves as one walks over to the side. There is even a waterfall, though only the path remains during summer.

The Walk Continues

As beautiful as they were, it was not my destination. I descended from my detour and returned on my journey. The sun was killing me and I had another 6 KM or more to walk. I tried hitchhiking, but without luck. An old man explained to me that the fort will close by the time I reach there, and something else in Marati, which I did not understand. I smiled at him, thanked for the advice and kept walking.

Tired, I Stopped

I slowly walked in through one of the gigantic gates. These windows were once used by the defending army to launch their cannons at approaching armies. The village below looked beautiful.

And I reached the top! Step after step. I couldn’t believe myself. I did it. The obstacles I crossed, the fears I faced. “The journey is not about the destination, but the journey itself”, turned out to be true after all.

The hours of pain, my fatigue, everything vaporised there. No longer was I aware of my aching legs, or of the straps of my bag burying into my shoulders. I was being lifted by the wind. I felt the adrenaline rush through my blood and I forgot everything else.

The Girl and The Fort

Atop the fort lay another surprise. Here was this old rusted fort, with grass and moss growing all over. A place that I worked hard to reach. And there sat this beautiful girl, radiating in her bright beautiful colours, disinterested in all that was around her. It was so contrasting an image that I had to capture it. To that day, I had never asked a stranger, if I could take their photo, and the least, a young pretty girl. Knowingly and unknowingly, that day was a day of facing my fears. I summoned up my courage. I asked her. For me, it turned out to be one of my best captures :)

Looking Back

Over the years many armies have marched through these doors. This was my day.

Walking Down

I started my descent, caring not for my return journey. For I knew just as I found a way up, I will find a way down.

Leisurely Walk

As the sun slowly went down, taking with it its harsh heat, I leisurely walked down the road that I went up, smiling heartily.

The World Beckons!

Moon Rise over the Fort

Back in my room, laying in my bed typing this out, giving my body its hard earned rest, I look back. My expenses for the day amounted to Rs 300/- everything included. But the experience I had, priceless! I write this to remind you, that the aim of life is to live. Live your life! Face your fears. The feeling is amazing.
