Callaway X-Tour Irons Review

Martin Hopley

When we picked up the Callaway X-Tour irons you could see immediately from the back that it was a Callaway, with the notch design and undercut cavity.

However when you put it down at address it looked like any other premium iron with a compact head, thin top line and no cavity in view. Amazing (for a Callaway).

It had a very classic offset and lie and the feel from the forged head was very solid, if a little heavy due to the cavity system that keeps the weight low and behind the face.

We tested it with a True Temper Dynamic Gold stiff steel shaft and the club felt heavier than competitors. Overall we think low handicappers should go for this over the X-18 Pro Series and if the price is right, then it could open up a new market for Callaway.

User reviews.

I purchased a set of these off Ebay after having played the Titleist 680CB's for about 14 years. The thing that interested me about this set is that the previous owner had Graphite matrix shafts put in them and had the loft and lie adjusted for all of them as they are like the PXG's and every club is set to a 37" length. Granted, I haven't hit them yet, but based on these reviews, I'm really looking forward to it and how could I go wrong for $175? The shafts are almost that much, let alone the mid-size Winn Dry-tack grips. I will update after a few rounds. And yes, I agree...great look at setup and doesn't look like a big bertha or a shovel on the ground. Very attractive, classic setup.

Love these irons. Look great and feel great. I've made some of the best shots of my life with these irons. Can get a more than normal loft on these irons which makes it great for landing shots on the green and them staying on. Thank you Callaway.

I have a 22 handicap and find my Callaway X-Tour steel shaft clubs easier to use than so called game improvement irons. They are beautiful to look at and have a massive cavity which makes them so easy to get airborne, thus creating a very long carry distance. A beautiful iron which although a bit on the heavy side can be used by high and low handicappers alike.

Tried these Callaway X-Tour Irons out down at my local range/shop along with pretty much everything else in the shop and the only thing that came close was the Wilson Pi5, but enough of them more about these beasts!!!! These Callaway X-Tour Irons are truly awesome, stupidly easy to use given they are forged and perfectly balanced to shape around the pin, almost every shot I look at with one of these in my hands looks acheivable and, this is where I got confused, they are made by Callaway!? the most hated brand by any better player yet here I am loving them!! really are a great buy as they'll be around for a while, the forged feel is excellent, once you have tried forged irons. you'll never go back...

When the new Callaway X-Tour irons first appeared a couple of months ago, I hit the 6 iron several times per day and really got to enjoy the "feel" of the club. I then played 4 rounds with the Callaway X-Tour irons with a Stiff Dynamic Gold Shaft to evaluate their performance. I made some of the best iron shots I've ever made almost right away. The irons performed admirably with a mid-high trajectory and very straight. These are arguably the "softest" irons I've ever hit. Their performance actually improved with each round so I purchased a set with the same Dynamic Gold shaft but in Regular flex. I have now played more than 10 rounds with my new Irons and continue to get excellent performance. I particularly like the look of the club at set-up. They are unlike the customary clunky, bulky looking, thick top- lined Callaway?s. I actually enjoy knowing where the clubhead is at all times. I find them to be much softer and more accurate with more spin and ball stopping ability than any of my former irons. They are very forgiving and yet allow me to "work" the ball. Needless to say that I am thrilled with their performance...they are definitely keepers. I would recommend them to anyone with a low to mid handicap that wants to experience the feel of a Forged club.

At address you are amazed that this is a Callaway. The X-Tour looks like any other iron, albeit a bit heavier. The strike is very solid and the feel is very good, although not up there with a forged Mizuno. However the Callaway X-Tour irons are a good alternative to the X-18 Pro Series and worth a hit.

Best Callaway Irons I've hit, basically because these Callaway X-Tours didn't look like typical Callaway Irons. They have a thin top line and have a Titleist or Mizuno iron look about them. Very easy to hit and gave me a penetrating flight at a decent height. They look good from above and sit behind the ball well.

50 Words or Less

The Callaway X Forged irons are a perfect option for players who want great looks and feel with a little forgiveness.

Introduction

With the release of their two new players irons – the X Forged and the Apex MB – Callaway has added to an already substantial line up.  Knowing how impressive both the Apex CF 16 and the Apex Pro irons are, I wondered what these latest releases would be bringing to the table.  My testing revealed that the X Forged is different iron entirely, truly geared for the better player.

x tour forged irons

The Callaway X Forged irons are everything a better player could want at address.  The top line is thin, and there’s very minimal offset .  The head is just large enough to frame the ball, and the overall shape is a bit tighter without being boxy or graceless.

One of the most interesting visual aspects is the finish.  It’s somewhere between satin and chrome , and I think it looks great.  You get the glare reduction of satin but a little of the bling of chrome.

Comparing it to the Apex irons, the X Forged is much more of a players iron than the Apex CF 16 – less offset, thinner, smaller.  It’s nearly identical to the Apex Pro in size and offset, but the finish is different and the toe is more square.

x tour forged irons

Sound & Feel

When you catch the X Forged on the center of the face, you’re rewarded with a classic feel – soft and crisp .  These irons have better feedback than many others in this category .  When you move off the sweet spot, the feel gets substantially firmer.

The sound is one of the major differences between the Apex irons and the X Forged.  Both Apex irons have that crisp “snap” of a distance iron.  They feel long.  The X Forged has a more traditional forged sound and feel that communicates control.

x tour forged irons

Performance

Callaway typically does a good job of explaining which of their irons fit each type of player.  In the case of the X Forged, they explain it by saying very little.  Whereas their other irons have high tech features like the 360 Cup Face, Exo Cage, or Tungsten Loaded Standing Wave, the X Forged is billed as having “Precision Grooves, Classic Shaping, and Exceptional Feel.”  These are irons for the player that’s consistently hitting the center of the face and is more concerned with control than distance.

That isn’t to say that the X Forged is short, not be a long shot.  The lofts of the X Forged are similar to the Apex Pro, and I found the distances to be nearly identical.  If you want the longest 6I in your foursome, you can opt for other Callaway models like the Epic .  However, the X Forged can go yard for yard with any iron in the players cavity back category .

One important, if under appreciated, technical aspect of the X Forged is the CG Progression .  What this refers to is that the CG is lower in the long irons and higher in the short irons .  This is important for two reasons.  First, in the long irons, you want a low CG to get the ball airborne and maximize carry distance.  With the short irons, you want a higher CG to create a stronger ball flight and better consistency.  I found that the X Forged irons gave me a consistent, playable peak height throughout the set, which is the hallmark of a good CG progression.

x tour forged irons

The  Callaway  X Forged irons were a finalist in my recent iron fitting, and it’s easy to see why.  They offer all the forgiveness that a better player would need or want without compromising on feel or aesthetics.  Combine that with great turf interaction and the ability to control trajectory and you have an iron you can expect to see frequently on Tour.

The iblades getting kicked out of the bag? What’s replacing them?

' src=

Potentially. I have a story coming out about that, hopefully in the near future.

' src=

Matt: Any chance of a post about your recent fitting? Would enjoy reading about the other clubs you tried and your overall experience. Many thanks.

Yes, I will have a story about it. Hopefully it will be out in the next month.

' src=

Just bought the x forged and been playing golf for 25 years with titleist and Taylor made irons ..these are the best irons I have ever hit bar none! Truly remarkable and i never ever thot I’d put callaway in my bag..true blue titleist iron guy and that is no longer the case!

' src=

Hi Matt really good review, I was thinking about buying a set of mizuno´s jpx 919 tour but I´m a little concerned about forgiveness. How do this callaway´s x forged compare to the mizuno´s jpx 919 tour in terms of feel. Are the mizuno´s noticeably softer? or I would not feel any difference? Thank you in advance. Greetings from the Canary Islands. (Spain)

I think the X Forged is slightly more forgiving. Feel is subjective. To me, the Mizunos are slightly softer, but not much.

' src=

Would a 15 handicap who is a picket struggle with these?

I’m guessing you meant “picker.” If so, I’d say that there are better choices. A steady diet of thin shots is not what these irons were made for.

' src=

How would these do for somebody with a higher handicap (let’s leave it over 20+)? I’m working on my consistency at this point. My game has improved this year and I’m ready for the next level club. Would these be a good fit?

I can only recommend a fitting for you to get that specific information for your swing. Generally speaking, I would not recommend these irons to a 20+ handicap player.

' src=

Being a 8 handicap who doesn’t take a divot be ok to use the x forged? Love the look of them.

I would recommend a fitting to find out for sure.

The X-Tours produce tremendous distance and a powerful trajectory. As they're forged you get a great feel from the face and, although not the most forgiving club on the market, a centre strike will be crisp and solid. Purists may find the top edge a little thick but in terms of feel and strike they excel. Well balanced and relatively easy to hit they are expensive but worth the investment.

These irons produce tremendous distance and get a crisp centre strike.

Forged cavity backed iron with two piece head design and steel shafts. Callaway's brand new forging uses a two piece head design with the face welded to the main body and rear cavity section. “Extreme Notch Weighting” should boost forgiveness and stability whilst helping to lower the centre of gravity and make long irons more playable.

Forged Golf Irons

Callaway x-tour forged irons.

Callaway X-Tour Forged Irons

The Callaway X Tour Forged Irons were the first forged iron to be developed by Callaway. Designed by Roger Cleveland, the X Tour Irons combines the added benefits of forged irons with the features that Callaway enthusiasts have come to expect.

The X Tours have a cavity back that actually takes up the entire back of the club–a fairly rare feature, but one that maximizes the club’s forgiveness. Also, the 1020 forged carbon face is laser welded on the body, thereby providing a soft, desirable feel and a very forgiving clubhead. There are some who say, however, that while the X Tours do have a soft feel, it’s not as good as a Mizuno forged iron.

The two-piece design of the X Tour irons makes it so that Callaway was able to incorporate their 360 degree undercut channel with notch weighting, which allows for higher moment of inertia to make the club more forgiving as well as consistent. In addition, the slightly modified design of the hosel gives these irons a lower center of gravity for better playability.

Aesthetically, the X Tours have a cambered topline, making them look more traditional. However, compared to the Taylor Made TP forged irons, the X Tours seem a little bulky, but the added thickness increases these clubs’ forgiveness. Also, many golfers prefer the smaller head and squarer toe look that the X Tours feature. The standard shaft is True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shafts in flexes of R300, S300, and X100.

Overall, the Callaway X Tour Forged Irons are very forgiving, very versatile, and despite being a little on the bulky side, ideal for traditional, more accomplished golfers who are looking for maximum workability.

Callaway X Forged Irons Review

Today I’ll be reviewing the Callaway X Forged iron , a gold medal winner on the 2019 Golf Digest Hot List.

After a couple of previous iterations in 2009 and 2013, the X Forged made a return in 2018. It’s is described by Callaway as “Tour-inspired look and performance”, and it’s the model that Phil Mickelson currently has in his bag.

As a forged cavity-back, it was designed based on extensive feedback from Tour players, and is meant to deliver precise shot-making with a classic finish.

I was excited to get my hands on these irons and try them out. How do they perform? Do I recommend them over similar forged iron offerings?

Read on to find out what you need to know before putting these in your bag.

Note:  Unless otherwise stated, stock shafts and stock grips are used when evaluating this club. In most cases, the golf clubs reviewed on Golfstead are acquired temporarily for testing purposes and are not purchased. The review that follows is based on the personal experience and research of the author. Because everyone’s swing and body are different, results with a particular club may differ from person to person.

What are the reviews like?

The X Forged irons have been received extremely well by both recreational golfers and professionals.

They currently have average ratings of 4.9/5 on Global Golf and 4.8/5 (99% recommended) on the CGPO website with over 75 reviews.

What People Like

  • excellent club weighting
  • looks beautiful at address
  • feel is soft
  • still long despite being a players iron
  • great accuracy and consistency

What People Don’t Like

  • mishits can feel harsh

What are the features?

Tour players had a hand in designing the Forged X, based on what they think would perform well for better players.

Triple Net Forging & Tour Soles

High performance and excellent feel is the result of very precise triple net forging.

The soles are Tour configured for exceptional turf interaction out of a variety of lies.

Progressive CG & Precision Grooves

Firstly, the center of gravity is progressive — lower on the long irons, greatly improving control.

The X Forged irons also feature 20V grooves that produce high spin for even more control, as well as reduce fliers out of the rough.

Classic Shaping

The X Forged irons have a classic, clean, smooth look at address. The design was based on some of Callaway’s most popular forged irons.

You can buy the X Forged irons individually and in sets 3-PW, 4-PW, or 5-PW.

The stock shaft is the Project X Steel . You can choose from several different steel and graphite shafts.

The stock grip is the Lamkin UTx CHEV , one out of many options.

If you’re interested, full information on shafts, grips and their specs can be found on the Callaway website.

Below are the specs of the X Forged irons. Click or zoom to enlarge.

Callaway X Forged Irons Review - Specs

How do these irons perform?

Distance control.

Distance control with the X Forged irons is excellent, as I expected it would be. Distances are comparable to the Apex Pro .

Although my skill level isn’t sky-high to where I can hit yardages bang on, I can definitely see how the iron can be relied on in pressure situations to fly the right distance.

Contributing to this great consistency is the progressive CG, which produces optimal ball flights all throughout the set.

Forgiveness

Yes, I know, forgiveness shouldn’t be a top consideration in a players iron, but I want to mention it anyway. Everyone could use a little forgiveness, after all.

Sure, you’ll definitely know if you strike the ball off the center of the face — fat, thin, towards the heel or toe — but the forgiveness isn’t that much worse than many game-improvement irons I’ve played.

There is some forgiveness there despite the fact that this is a full-on players iron, and that’s a nice bonus that I think deserves mentioning.

Ball Flight/Playability

Overall, I found ball flights with the X Forged to be very consistent and highly controllable. Capable golfers should have no trouble flighting the ball, hitting draws, fades, and straight balls.

During my testing, I was easily able to dial in my short irons and hit precision shots into the green.

One thing I should also mention is that these irons go through the turf beautifully. Whatever grass you’re hitting from, you can count on the X Forged to get you to where you want to go.

The X Forged irons aren’t going to put lipstick on your mis-hits, but when you do hit it solidly, you’ll be handsomely rewarded.

What about look, sound & feel?

I really love the look of these irons, both in the bag and at address. It just screams “professional” and “performance”.

There’s hardly any offset, the top line and soles are quite thin, and the clubhead frames the ball very nicely.

I love these kinds of looks much more than chunky game-improvement heads, even though I’m aware of the benefits GI irons offer. It all just looks really clean and good. For me, I feel better over the ball when I’m setting up with a thinner clubhead.

The X Forged irons have a satin chrome finish, with a very straightforward, no-frills badge design.

The Sound & Feel

As is typical with players irons like these, the feel gets firmer and harsher as you move away from the center of the face.

Hitting the sweet spot with the X Forged irons feels crisp and stable, with a hint of softness to it. The sound can be described as a solid snap, whack, or a combination of the two.

And feedback is some of the clearest that I’ve felt — you’ll be able to tell where you made contact with the face with great precision.

All in all, I would say that the sound and feel are above average for a players iron.

Where should I buy these irons online?

The X Forged irons can no longer be ordered from the official Callaway store because of their age.

Now, the best places to get them online (new or used) are eBay , Callaway Golf Pre-Owned , and Global Golf .

For example, CGPO has a fairly large selection of used sets with a 12-month warranty, 90-day buy-back policy, and condition guarantee.

The X Forged is a premium players iron that doesn’t compromise on control, precision, or feel. And the truth is that there’s hardly anything I can criticize about it.

If you’re a better player (or even if you’re someone who wants to challenge yourself with better clubs) and you want a top-quality players iron with a touch of forgiveness, I strongly recommend you give the X Forged a try.

What have you heard about Callaway’s X Forged irons? What have your results been with them? Let us know in the comments below.

I’ve had my 2018 X forged irons for almost a year now. I’m about a 16-18 handicap and I love them! I hate big bulky club heads and could benefit from a more forgiving club, but honestly my scores haven’t gone up and I feel like I’ve become a better ball striker because these are less forgiving. If I didn’t have this thing called a job, my handicap would have gone done due to these clubs. I would definitely recommend them.

' src=

I definitely know where you’re coming from there. Some people really like the chunky GI stuff but it can be very beneficial for your game in the long run if you learn to hit with less forgiving irons. I really do like the X Forged. Thanks for commenting.

Choosing The Right Golf Club For Your Game

Callaway Golf Certified Pre-Owned stocks a wide range of pre-owned Callaway Golf, Odyssey Golf and Odyssey Toulon golf clubs. On every product page on the site, there is a grid which displays all of the available stock of that specific club we have for sale. The grid features a number of columns which describe the specification of the golf club, starting with 'Head Hand' on the left-hand side (which always displays either 'Left Hand' or 'Right Hand'). The right-hand side of the grid displays the condition options we have available, from 'Like New' through to 'Average' condition.

Choosing the correct loft in your driver is critical in producing a proper launch angle. Golfers with a slower swing speed will benefit from a higher lofted driver (as it helps to get the ball in the air more easily) and the result will be higher trajectory, longer carry, and greater distance. Look at your average swing speed in order to determine the proper loft for your driver:

*Most Callaway Golf drivers come with a loft setting of 9, 10.5 or 12 degrees of loft, and can be adjusted to either -1 or +2 degrees of loft.

Shaft Flex:

Choosing the right shaft flex for your game is crucial: without the correct flex, golfers will have a harder time making solid contact with the ball on a consistent basis, affecting the direction and distance of their shots. As a general guide, you can determine your shaft flex based on your clubhead speed:

*If you're at the lower end of your clubhead speed category, select a shaft weight at the lower end of the scale, and vice versa.

Shaft Length:

Choosing the correct length of shaft will ensure you have the optimum level of control over your driver. The standard length of a driver is 45.75'' for men and 44.75'' for women. Your height and your level of control over the driver will determine the correct shaft length for you. A shorter golfer should go down 0.5'' to 1''. A golfer with less control over their driver might also consider going down by 0.5'' to 1''.

Shaft Material:

Irons come with either graphite or steel shafts. Golfers with a lower swing speed would generally perform better with a graphite shaft, as it can help with getting the ball in the air.

Choosing the right shaft flex in your irons is vital in making solid contact with the ball on a consistent basis. With the correct flex, golfers will see more accuracy and longer distance on the shots. Follow this guide for determining which flex and weight is right for your game:

Head Lie Angle:

Getting the correct lie angle of your iron will ensure the position of the club head at address and impact will strike the ground, rather than the heel or toe. A club which is too upright for a golfer will cause the clubface to close, resulting in a pull or a hook (for right-handed players), which a club which is too flat will hit the ground with the toe, causing the clubface to open and resulting in a push or a slice (for right-handed players).

Use this guide to determine which club length and lie is right for you, based on your height and wrist-to-floor measurement:

Selecting the correct club length will ensure the golfer is in the address position which can be maintained throughout the golf swing. Too long a club length will cause a shorter player to stand too upright, while too short a club length will cause a taller player to stoop over the club.

The degrees of head loft in a wedge determine which type of wedge it is. The higher degree of loft in a wedge, the higher the shot.

Head Bounce:

Head grind:.

Wedges come with either graphite or steel shafts, although steel shafts are more common. Golfers with a lower swing speed would generally perform better with a graphite shaft, as it can help with getting the ball in the air.

A club which is too upright for a golfer will cause the clubface to close, resulting in a pull or a hook (for right-handed players), which a club which is too flat will hit the ground with the toe, causing the clubface to open and resulting in a push or a slice (for right-handed players).

Callaway Golf did something brand new when it introduced the X-Tour irons: It made a set of forged irons. The Callaway X-Tour irons were the company's very first forged irons when they debuted in 2005. (Related: What is the difference between forged and cast irons? )

That was a departure for a company that made its mark in game-improvement golf clubs , which included all of its earliest iron sets with their focus on extreme perimeter weighting .

Today Callaway makes premium sets, forged sets, players' irons, along with what it continues to be well-known for: golf clubs that help recreational golfers "miss better."

But that original X-Tour iron set is where Callaway's entry into the premium forged irons segment of the market began.

Finding/Buying Callaway X-Tour Irons Today

The X-Tour irons can still be found through resellers and sites/shops that focus on used golf clubs. According to the PGA.com Value Guide, the resale value of X-Tour irons today is around $70, but you might find them for more or less depending on the source and the condition . We've seen them listed on CallawayPreOwned.com, where they tend to be more expensive — but you are getting them semi-direct from the source that way. (Given how old the set is today, the original X-Tours are getting harder to find. But Callaway made multiple follow-on X-Tour sets in later years, too.)

Looking Back at the Callaway X-Tour Irons

How were the Callaway X-Tour irons described at the time of their debut? That debut was in 2005. Here's what we wrote about them in real time:

March 21, 2005 — The new set of irons from Callaway Golf is new not just for consumers, but for the company, as well. The Callaway X-Tour Irons represent the entry of Callaway — a company built on game-improvement — into the forged irons marketplace.

The X-Tour Irons were designed by Roger Cleveland and, while forged, still feature many of the qualities that have made Callaway irons so popular.

"It has been very exciting for me to work on Callaway Golf's first iron offering in a category that appeals to so many passionate and skilled golfers," Cleveland said. "I believe the X-Tour Irons bring a new level of performance in shot-making that can be easily discerned and enjoyed by better golfers."

The Callaway X-Tour Irons begin shipping to pro shops on April 15, 2005. The MSRP for the set (3-PW) is $1,280.

Callaway says the X-Tour set offers the best of both worlds, "... the playability and feel that better golfers demand (along with) proprietary technologies that have established Callaway Golf as the world's leader in golf equipment."

The Callaway X-Tour Irons feature a notch-weighted, cavity-back head to which the face plate is laser-welded. The back cavity is precision-milled to perfectly fit the face. Both pieces of the clubhead are forged from soft, 1020 carbon steel.

The 2-piece forging allows Callaway, the company said, to incorporate the other technologies well-known to Callaway fans: the 360-degree Undercut Channel, Extreme Notch Weighting and a modified bore through hosel .

The 360-degree Undercut Channel and Extreme Notch Weighting are designed to maximize perimeter weighting, moving more weight to the heel and toe. These qualities help stabilize the club through impact, helping improve the ball flight on mis-hits. These features also provide a deeper center of gravity for more ease of use with the long irons and a higher launch angle .

The modified bore through hosel is longer than typically found in Callaway's S2H2 Technology. The location and length of the hosel further influences the center of gravity, moving it more toward the heel. This quality, Callaway says, helps workability.

The Callaway X-Tour Irons have been in use on professional tours for a while already, with Phil Mickelson and Annika Sorenstam among those pros using them.

The standard shaft is True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shafts in flexes of R300 (regular), S300 (stiff), and X100 (extra stiff). A 2-iron can be special-ordered to add to the 3-PW standard set.

What we say...

Callaway have introduced the x forged irons – a forged cavity back iron that has already proved very popular with tour players.

Compared to the Apex MB, X Forged is more forgiving with a slightly longer blade and slightly larger head size, to instil confidence in both Tour players and accomplished amateurs.

Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed and Branden Grace have all been fans of the previous Callaway X Forged irons model, so it’s possible they’ve played a role in this new design. Callaway says this style of forged cavity is very popular with tour players, as it offers a sprinkling of forgiveness missing from the new Apex Muscleback.

Callawasy X Forged iron

Its sole sculpting, progressive centre of gravity locations and precision grooves have been set up to optimise shot making, turf interaction and accuracy. And the super-clean and classic look at address will appeal to many.

The truth about strong lofted irons

With a clean and classic look at address, the new X Forged Irons are engineered for high performance and exceptional feel from a precise Triple Net Forging process.

This single piece, cavity back iron features Tour configured soles, CG progression for precision shot-making and accuracy, with just the right amount of forgiveness and a classic finish.

X Forged also features a similar precise and aggressive ’20V’ shaped groove pattern seen in the Apex MB, made possible through the forging process, promoting high levels of control and spin out of any playing conditions, whilst retaining the clean and classic look at address, inspired by some of Callaway’s most popular forged irons.

Callaway X-Forged Irons Review: You need to know

Designed with extensive input from Callaway’s tour staff, the X Forged incorporate a small cavity back for an extra degree of playability over Callaway’s Apex MBs. Tour configured soles improve turf interaction, and clean smooth lines give an appealing look at address. 20V grooves maximise spin consistency for controlled shot-making.

Everything you need to know about iron shaft weight. And why it’s now more important than flex.

Which Callaway iron suits me?

Callaway X-Forged Irons Review: We say

If there were awards for looks alone the X-Forged would surely win hands down, it’s a stunningly well shaped iron and the classic finish is out of this world. Decent golfers will love the straight and square leading edge, which our test pro reckoned would be great for alignment and help with shot-shaping.

With absolutely no fast face tech and a seven iron loft 2.5 deg weaker than the strongest on test, the Forged was never going to compete on numbers, but then it was never designed to. Rather their strength lies in tugging at heart strings, golfers who play them will do so because they’re forged, because they feel and look great not because they promise improvements in speed, launch or carry distance.

Callaway X-Forged Irons Review: Verdict

This is the furthest you need to go down the Callaway iron range, leave the Apex MB alone unless you’re name is Sergio Garcia. Much like a super-model you can bet your bottom dollar they’ll look the business in your bag but they’re likely to be a devil to live with, that is unless your ball-striking ability’s equivalent to a very low single figure ability or better.

Callaway X Forged Irons: Precision And Performance For Enhanced Golfing Experience

Brenda draughn.

January 8, 2024

Explore the and performance of Callaway X Forged Irons. With advanced technology, customization options, and positive reviews, these irons offer enhanced control, accuracy, and distance for a versatile golfing experience.

Features of Callaway X Forged Irons

When it comes to the Callaway X Forged Irons, there are several standout features that make them an exceptional choice for golfers of all skill levels. From the precision forged construction to the multi-material medallion, each aspect of these irons has been carefully designed to enhance performance and provide an unforgettable experience on the course.

Precision Forged Construction

One of the key features of the Callaway X Forged Irons is their precision forged construction. Using advanced manufacturing techniques, these irons are meticulously crafted to ensure consistent performance and exceptional feel. The forging process involves shaping the clubhead from a single piece of high-quality steel, resulting in a solid and durable iron that delivers consistent performance swing after swing.

Tour-Inspired Shaping

The tour-inspired shaping of the Callaway X Forged Irons is another standout feature. These irons have a sleek and compact profile that appeals to both professional golfers and avid enthusiasts. The compact shape allows for precise shot control and the ability to work the ball in any direction. Whether you’re hitting a fade or a draw, these irons provide the versatility and control needed to shape your shots with confidence.

Tungsten Weighting

Callaway has incorporated tungsten weighting into the design of the X Forged Irons to optimize the center of gravity (CG) placement. Tungsten is a dense material that allows for precise weight distribution, resulting in improved forgiveness and a higher launch angle. The strategic placement of tungsten in the clubhead helps to stabilize the irons at impact, minimizing the effects of off-center hits and maximizing distance and accuracy.

Progressive CG Placement

Another feature that sets the Callaway X Forged Irons apart is their progressive CG placement. This means that the CG is strategically positioned differently in each iron within the set. The long irons have a lower CG to promote a higher launch and increased distance, while the short irons have a higher CG for enhanced control and accuracy. This progressive CG placement ensures optimal performance throughout the entire set, regardless of the shot at hand.

Multi-Material Medallion

The inclusion of a multi-material medallion in the Callaway X Forged Irons further enhances their performance and feel. This medallion is made from a combination of materials, including aluminum and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The medallion dampens unwanted vibrations at impact, providing a soft and satisfying feel that golfers crave. Additionally, the multi-material construction helps to optimize sound and feedback, allowing golfers to better assess the quality of their shots.

20V Grooves for Spin Control

One of the standout features of the Callaway X Forged Irons is the incorporation of 20V grooves. These grooves are designed to maximize spin control, giving you the ability to shape your shots with precision and accuracy. The advanced groove design ensures consistent spin rates across the entire face of the club, even on off-center hits. Whether you’re looking to add backspin for approach shots or control the ball around the greens, the 20V grooves provide the necessary control to elevate your game.

VFT Face Technology for Fast Ball Speed

Callaway is renowned for its innovative face technology, and the X Forged Irons are no exception. These irons feature Variable Face Thickness (VFT) technology, which optimizes ball speed and forgiveness across the entire face. The strategically positioned VFT pattern allows for maximum flex and trampoline effect, resulting in explosive ball speeds and increased distance. With the Callaway X Forged Irons, you can expect consistent and powerful shots, even on mishits.

Urethane Microspheres for Enhanced Feel

Feel is a crucial aspect of any iron, and the Callaway X Forged Irons excel in this department. These microspheres absorb unwanted vibrations, providing a soft and solid feel that resonates with golfers of all skill levels. The enhanced feel not only adds to the enjoyment of the game but also allows for better shot control and improved consistency.

Suspended Tungsten Core for Optimal CG Placement

Optimizing the center of gravity (CG) is essential for achieving optimal launch conditions and overall . The Callaway X Forged Irons utilize a suspended tungsten core to precisely position the CG for each iron in the set. This strategic CG placement allows for a higher launch angle, increased forgiveness, and improved control. Whether you’re looking to hit towering iron shots into greens or control the trajectory on approach shots, the suspended tungsten core provides the necessary stability and performance to elevate your game.

360 Face Cup for Consistent Distance

Consistent distance is a key factor for any golfer, and the Callaway X Forged Irons deliver in this aspect with their 360 Face Cup technology. This innovative design creates a flexible face that promotes faster ball speeds across a larger portion of the face. The result is improved distance and forgiveness, even on off-center hits. With the 360 Face Cup, you can expect reliable yardage gaps throughout the set, allowing for better distance control and scoring opportunities.

Custom Club Lengths

The length of your golf clubs can significantly affect your swing mechanics and overall performance. Callaway understands this and offers custom club length options for their X Forged Irons, allowing you to optimize your setup for maximum comfort and consistency.

  • The custom club length options available for the Callaway X Forged Irons include:
  • Standard Length : This is the default length for the X Forged Irons, designed to suit the average golfer’s height and swing mechanics. It provides a balanced setup and is a good starting point for most players.
  • +0.25 inches : If you are taller or have longer arms, adding 0.25 inches to the standard length can help you achieve a more comfortable and efficient swing.
  • -0.25 inches : On the other hand, if you are shorter or have shorter arms, subtracting 0.25 inches from the standard length can promote better control and accuracy in your shots.

Customizing the club length ensures that you have the correct posture and alignment at address, allowing for a more natural and consistent swing. It is essential to consult with a professional club fitter to determine the ideal club length for your game.

Lie Angle Adjustments

The lie angle of a golf club refers to the angle between the club’s sole and the shaft. It plays a crucial role in determining the club’s impact on the ball, including direction and trajectory. Callaway offers lie angle adjustments for their X Forged Irons, enabling you to fine-tune the clubs to match your swing characteristics.

  • The lie angle adjustment options available for the Callaway X Forged Irons include:
  • Standard Lie : This is the default lie angle for the X Forged Irons, designed to suit the average golfer’s swing mechanics and posture.
  • Upward Adjustment : If you tend to hit shots that veer to the left (for right-handed golfers), an upward lie angle adjustment can help promote a straighter ball flight.
  • Downward Adjustment : Conversely, if you tend to hit shots that veer to the right (for right-handed golfers), a downward lie angle adjustment can assist in correcting your ball flight.

By making lie angle adjustments, you can ensure that the club’s sole makes proper contact with the turf, leading to crisper and more accurate shots. It is recommended to work with a professional club fitter to determine the optimal lie angle for your swing.

Loft Adjustments

The loft of a golf club refers to the angle between the clubface and the vertical plane. It directly affects the trajectory and distance of your shots. Callaway X Forged Irons offer loft adjustments, allowing you to fine-tune the clubs to match your desired ball flight and distance gaps.

  • The loft adjustment options available for the Callaway X Forged Irons include:
  • Standard Loft : This is the default loft for the X Forged Irons, designed to provide a balanced combination of distance and control.
  • Strong Loft : If you are looking to maximize distance, opting for a stronger loft can help launch the ball higher and achieve longer shots. This option is suitable for players who generate high swing speeds and desire extra distance.
  • Weak Loft : On the other hand, if you want to optimize control and trajectory, choosing a weaker loft can help lower the ball flight and provide more accuracy. This option is ideal for players who prioritize shot shaping and precision.

By adjusting the loft of your X Forged Irons, you can fine-tune your ball flight and distance gaps, allowing for more consistent and versatile performance on the course. It is advisable to consult with a professional club fitter to determine the optimal loft adjustments for your game.

Playing golf also teaches tstoto about responsibility and discipline. Every move and decision must be considered carefully. He learns to judge distance, choose the right club, and control the power of his shot. They teach caution, a skill that can be applied in everyday life.

no downsides....very good.

I can't believe I am the only one who suffers from this. Now let's talk about the forgiveness. Off center hits go dead straight with no distance loss. This is simply fantastic! The putter really helps me get the ball started on the line I want at the pace I want. transmission repair Merced

Absolutely love them, I have a fantastic feel to them and put plenty of spin on the ball, even if i top the ball it still rolls as far as if i hit it perfectly. Camarillo Green Tree Service

Can't find any.

These irons are the best I've ever played with! They are just forgiving enough but also gives great feedback like a forged iron should. I gained 10 yards and also have better accuracy. I love the ball flight I get with the project X 6.0 shafts. My handicap went down from a 14 to flirting with being a 10 this year. I'm sure they will help me go to a single digit! Won't change irons until I can find a used set of the 2013 X-Forged Irons.

I had been playing my old clubs for nearly 10 years so it was time for a change. I tried a set of Mizuno MP57 but they didn't work for me as well since I am a picker of the golf ball and not a digger. I looked around in some forums for advice and the golfwrx guys all said that the design of the x forged irons were very good for players like me that sweep the ball and don't take divots. They were right in that these irons are much better for me than the Mizunos. I bought them from Callaway preowned with Nippon 850 shafts but they were too stiff for me so I reshafted them with TT Dynalite shafts which were softer and also give me a higher ball flight. Now that are just about dialed in and they feel very good. Like any set of clubs find the clubhead design that fits your swing and abilities and most importantly find the correct shaft for your ballflight and swing speed.

Mizuno Mp57, Ping i3 Blade

I was playing with the X-Tours and was loving them but after watching my Brother-in-law hit nice shot after nice shot with the X-Forged I knew I had to upgrade. The club is smaller than the Tour so I like that about it. They hit nice and I picked up 10 yards with them. I can't wait to see how this season shapes up.

Callaway Preowned Golf is the best place for clubs period. Got my set 4-PW for $185 on clearance!

I would say the Callaway X-Tour and the Cleveland TA3 Form Forged.

Let me first start by saying that i have had my irons re shafted to TT dynamic Gold To lower the trajectory (high swing speed so the flighted really weren't my thing). Performance- I absolutely love the things I can do with these Irons, More than enough workability, and the distances are fine, I don't know the lofts offhand but I hit these Slightly Further than most of my Past Clubs, The Yardage Gaps Are near Perfect, about 15 Yds. per club slightly higher from 5i-3i. Forgiveness- Surprisingly High for a Thinner Forged Iron, but still by no means a club for someone with an inconsistent swing path. Off-center hits can go fairly straight but in the wrong direction by a few degrees. Feel- Amazing, plain and simple. I can tell you almost exactly how far off a miss hit is within 1/2 a Cm before looking at the club, And buttery smooth on a solid shot as with most Forged Irons. Cons- Very Few, but I am not a Huge Fan of the Looks, and occasionally if you play on Bermuda grass the clubs dig pretty deep and can sometimes stop after your shot (rare but it doesn't happen to me with some other clubs.)

Broke a 5iron at the hosel, got back to me in a few days good as new, very friendly A+

Just about every forged iron out there, with the exception of some older models and some Mizuno's. P.S. picked mine up for about $250 used, so value for me is unsurpassed. Anything under $350 for these is 5 stars, anything above that is still 4.

0317 X Driving Iron

A beautiful addition to the 0317 family, the tour-inspired PXG 0317 X Driving Iron produces a low, penetrating ball flight designed for discerning players looking for incredible shot control.

The thinnest iron face in golf, a larger face area with a longer blade length, precision weighting, and our proprietary XCOR2 core material combine to create an incredibly fast and accurate, yet very forgiving weapon.

3X forged, robotic polishing, and a milled face and back surface ensure the 0317 X Driving Irons is made to the tightest tolerances possible.

Incredible design, performance, and quality combine to deliver the ultimate player preferred driving iron.

Benefits:

  • · Low Launch
  • · Extremely Fast Ball Speeds
  • · Penetrating Ball Flight
  • · Insane Accuracy
  • · Exceptional Distance
  • · Incredibly Soft Feel

Technology That Performs

PXG 0317 X Driving Iron Milled Face & Back

MILLED BACK SURFACE

Milling the back surface of each iron is a high-precision process that reduces the wall thickness more than forging alone could achieve, to create a high-performance body design and an enhanced aesthetic.

0317 X Driving Iron Precision Weighting

Precision Weighting

0317 Irons feature specially designed internal weighting for balance, and one large weight located near the CG on the back of the clubhead. The large center weight can be used to achieve optimal swing weight. Customers can experience Precision Weighting Technology adjustments during their in-person fitting with a PXG Fitting Specialist. Weighting is not intended to be adjusted after purchase.

0317 ST Blades 3X Forged

3X Forged Feel

Each iron is three-times forged from 8620 soft carbon steel, creating a tight grain structure that increases its strength, prolonging the life of the grooves and enhancing the overall feel and appearance.

PXG 0317 X Driving Irons Ultra Thin Face

ULTRA-THIN FACE

Since PXG’s inception, our brand has maintained the thinnest face in golf. An industry breakthrough, our ultra-thin face technology continues to deliver unmatched feel and mishit performance. Combined with our proprietary XCOR2 Technology, 0317 Irons offer our highest C.O.R. performance ever. Made from high strength HT1770 maraging steel and measuring a mere 0.058" (~1.55mm) thick.

PXG 0317 X Driving Iron Xtreme Dark Finish

XCOR2 TECHNOLOGY

A result of years of research and development, XCOR2 is PXG’s revolutionary polymer core material, designed specifically for GEN5 Irons. Extremely lightweight, XCOR2 helps reduce the mass of the core. This enables more weight to be positioned low and to the perimeter of the backside of the clubhead, dramatically increasing MOI and forgiveness. Combined with our ultra-thin face technology, XCOR2 enhances the C.O.R. for extreme face deflection and out of sight ball speed.

Nacho Elvira: What's in the bag?

Nacho Elvira made a change to both his putter and his ball prior to winning his second DP World Tour title at the Soudal Open .

Nacho Elvira-2154026792

The Spaniard switched his putter from the to the White Hot OG Rossie that he used towards the end of the 2023 DP World Tour season with good effect, finishing in the top five for 'SG: Putting' across the week on his way to victory.

He used the Odyssey Ai-ONE 6 F at the Volvo China Open and then had the Odyssey Ai-ONE Rossie DB for the seven events prior to China earlier in the year.

For the first event of the European Swing in Belgium, Elvira also went from the Callaway Chrome Tour X to the Callaway Chrome Tour ball.

Remarkably, he overcame the unsettling distraction of the face on his two iron cracking in the warm-up prior to his final round.

Elvira has only once veered away from his usual set up (driver, fairway wood, utility iron, 4-9 iron, 4 wedges and putter) this season, opting for a five wood instead of his utility iron at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January.

Check out the clubs he used for his one -stroke victory  in Belgium below.

At the 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge, Daniel Berger bested Collin Morikawa in a playoff, making four to the latter’s five at Colonial Country Club after the pair deadlocked at 15 under at the end of regulation.

After a three-month break, the tournament was the first of the Tour’s resumed season amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Berger saved par from off the green on the first playoff hole. Morikawa couldn’t convert a three-footer to par.

The victory was Daniel Berger’s third tour triumph.

  2. Callaway X-Tour Irons Review

By Martin Hopley. Mar 22, 2008. When we picked up the Callaway X-Tour irons you could see immediately from the back that it was a Callaway, with the notch design and undercut cavity. However when you put it down at address it looked like any other premium iron with a compact head, thin top line and no cavity in view. Amazing (for a Callaway).

  3. Callaway X Forged Irons Review

The Callaway X Forged irons are everything a better player could want at address. The top line is thin, and there's very minimal offset . The head is just large enough to frame the ball, and the overall shape is a bit tighter without being boxy or graceless. One of the most interesting visual aspects is the finish.

  6. ULTIMATE REVIEW!

As much as I hate to keep coming back to it, for a design that's intended for the tour level ball strikers, or at least really strong amateur players, Callaway's X Forged long irons performed admirably, even in my 12-point-whatever-mediocre-ballstriker-hands. Designed by Roger Cleveland, the X Tour Irons combines the added benefits of forged irons with the features that Callaway enthusiasts have come to expect.
