Around the World in 80 Days (More or Less): Circle the Globe by Ship

By Heidi Sarna

If you can clear your social calendar for two to three months and have wads of cash burning a whole in your Hermes wallet, then you sound like the perfect candidate for a world cruise. Long, leisurely and pricey (try anywhere from $20,000 to $200,000 per person!), you can literally traverse the entire globe and never have to change planes, unpack twice or figure out where to have dinner.

A world cruise is the ultimate way to travel for the gilded armchair adventurer.

Cunard Line's Laconia made the first circumnavigation in 1922, and ever since "world cruise" has been synonymous with the ultimate in cushy, over-the-top travel. How else can you spend the winter months exploring the far corners of the earth, from Mumbai to Machu Picchu, all the while lazing in a luxurious cabin and attended to by a staff of doting do-gooders?

The world cruise crowd is a well-traveled, like-minded bunch to be sure, but don't expect elderly retirees who drool in their soup. Okay, many are over 60 because older folks tend to have the time and flexibility to be at sea for months at a stretch; as more people retire earlier or run their businesses remotely, the demographics have opened up. Radisson Seven Seas, for example, reports that there were 50 guests on the full world cruise this year under age 60. After all, 60 is the new 50.

For those with the luxury of precious time, some world cruises literally circumnavigate the globe in about 100 days, while others focus on regions like Asia or South America on journeys of 60 or 70 days. If you don't have time to do the full journey, which the majority of passengers don't (Cunard reports that about 20 to 40% book the line's full world cruise), shorter segments are typically available.

Count on about half of the trip being spent at sea, as the ships make their way between ports, often across vast bodies of water like the South China Sea and the Red Sea. During those looong, lazy days in transit, you can visit the gym and spa; or head to the library, casino, Internet center, observation lounges and bars. To keep your brain from turning to mush, lectures on history, culture or current events are offered frequently from a variety of prestigious guest speakers, from well-known journalists to authors and academics.

When in port, expect some overnight stays in a number of the world's most famed places, from Ho Chi Minh City to Hong Kong, Venice, St. Petersburg, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires. Excursions offered during the longer calls include journeys in-land for two- and three-day trips to fabled sites like Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal, Cambodia's Angkor Wat, the Great Wall of China, Egypt's Valley of the Kings, and the great game preserves of Africa.

If booking a full world cruise, you get lots of perks, often including complimentary first-class round-trip airfare to the port of embarkation, generous onboard credits for use in the ships' spa and boutiques, bon voyage parties in luxury hotels the night before departure, and private car transfers between home, airport and the ship.

As you might expect, you pay for what you get. Anyone willing and able to part with this kind of dough gets catered to big time. Special requests are rarely a problem. In their zeal to please world cruise guests, Radisson Seven Seas President and CEO Mark Conroy recalls installing a second safe in a gentleman's suite to accommodate his ample jewellery collection and in another instance, transporting and installing special wardrobes that a frequent world cruise guest had custom built to fit her suite.

World Cruise Offerings for 2006

If you like to stay active while wending your way around the globe , Crystal Cruises ' Crystal Serenity (tel. 800/446-6620 ; www.crystalcruises.com ) offers one of the most extensive rosters of activities you can find. While the two-year-old, 1,080-passenger Serenity spends 106 days sailing from Los Angeles to Southampton, England, enjoy pastimes such as merengue lessons, wine tasting and computer classes -- not to mention outstanding dining venues, including an excellent Asian venue, Silk Road, that's overseen by famed chef Nobu Matsuhisa. If you've never uttered the word budget in your life, then book a one-bedroom 1,345-square foot Crystal Penthouse with veranda. Each has a small gym, butler service, and ocean-view master bath complete with flat-screen television. If you can pry yourself away from all this, there will be plenty of opportunities to go ashore and explore some of the world's most coveted places. The journey begins by heading south to Mexico, Ecuador, Peru and across the South Pacific to New Zealand and Australia, before crossing the Indian Ocean and on to the eastern coast of Africa. Perhaps the most exciting segment may be the next one, which includes calls to Egypt and a first-time visit to Tripoli (Libya). If you can't quite commit to the full four months, seven shorter segments are available.

Departing January 18, 2006, the full 106-day world cruise in a standard 226-square-foot cabin with a picture window starts at $42,790 per person (around $404 a day), while the biggest abode, the Crystal Penthouse, starts at $210,940 per person ($1,990 a day!).

If tradition and experience mean anything to you, then Cunard Line's Queen Elizabeth 2 (tel. 800/5-CUNARD ; www.cunard.com ) gets big points. Built in 1969, the 1,740-passenger ship is considered by many to be the last true ocean liner to be built. QE2's long sleek hull, painted a deep almost-black midnight blue, stretches from a slim pointed bow built to slice through vast open seas to a set of classically-tiered stern decks. In this age of boxy white ships, the QE2 's classic profile is a head turner all right. Below decks, Cunard's storied past comes alive in a collection of grand paintings and memorabilia, which ranges from old menus and luggage tags to black and white snapshots of the many celebrities and world figures who have sailed with Cunard. It's all the perfect backdrop to the QE2' s grand 109-day journey, which circles the globe on route to exotics like Fiji, Bali, and Cairo, with overnights in Auckland, Sydney, Hong Kong, Bombay and Dubai. The ship sails round-trip out of New York, which no other circumnavigation is doing. There are more than 20 different types of cabins, from tiny inside staterooms for single travelers to the best in the house: a pair of Grand Suites, aptly named Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. Feel like royalty in the elegant wood-panelled one-bedroom split-level apartments that measure 1,184-square feet. Tucked high up in an ultra-private part of the ship that's accessible only through a private staircase, each one has two verandas, walk-in wardrobe, marble bathroom, dining area, and a raised lounge that leads to a cozy glass-covered conservatory and forward-facing veranda.

If you haven't got the time, there are nearly a dozen shorter segments available, from 37 to 107 days.

Departing January 9, 2006, the full 109-day world cruise in a category H single inside cabin starts at $28,559 (a more affordable $262 a day) and goes up to $239,999 for a Grand Suite ($2,202 a day).

Radisson ' 700-passenger Seven Seas Voyager (tel. 800/285-1835 ; www.rssc.com ) is a great size, small enough to be intimate and large enough to offer plenty of onboard amenities. The 108-day world cruise from Los Angeles to Ft. Lauderdale, covers practically every corner of the globe, calling at 45 ports in 28 countries. As you sail from one exceedingly fascinating port, like Rangoon (Myanmar), to another, say Tripoli (Libya) and Aqaba (Jordan), you'll be surrounded in luxury. The Voyager has four dining venues, plus a two-deck-high show lounge, cigar bar, Internet center, gym, spa and roomy pool deck. Then again, who needs any of it, chances are you'll want to spend as much time in your appealing stateroom as possible. The smallest staterooms are 306-square-foot suites with private verandas, walk-in closets, stocked mini-bars and CD/DVD players. For high rollers, the two-bedroom Master Suite is apartment-sized at 1,152 square feet. There's a large 183-square-foot balcony, plus butler service, fully stocked bar, and CD/DVD players.

Six shorter segments are also offered.

Departing January 10, 2006, the full 108-day world cruise in a standard suite starts at $49,995 per person ($463 per day), with a Master Suite going for $179,995 per person ($1,667 per day).

The smallest ship doing a partial world cruise is Seabourn 's Seabourn Pride (tel. 800/929-9595 ; www.seabourn.com ). The exceedingly intimate 208-passenger Pride is doing a 72-night circumnavigation of South America round-trip from Ft. Lauderdale, that heads south though the Panama Canal and clockwise around the continent. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ship's impressive culinary offerings and service all the while calling on spectacular colonial capitals like Lima, Santiago, and Buenos Aires, as well as sleepy old-world fishing towns such as Puerto Montt and Chiloe (Chile). Extended visits include three days in Manaus for excursions deep into the mighty Amazon. With as many sea days as ports of call, this miniature cruise ship is ideal for travelers most comfortable with a slow pace and lots of free time to simply relax. Most of the accommodations are 277-square-foot suites, some with sliding glass doors, others with bay windows. If you need something larger, consider a one-bedroom 530- to 575-square-foot Owner's Suite. Each has a fully stocked bar and a semi-circular couch that faces the sea through an arc of windows over the bow.

Three shorter segments of 29, 36 or 54 days are also available.

Departing January 2, 2006, the full 72-day South America circumnavigation cruise in a standard suite with a window starts at $19,678 per person ($273 a day), while you can book an Owner's Suite for $62,014 per person ($861 a day).

The humblest of the world cruise ships may be Holland America 's Prisendam (tel. 877/724-5425 ; www.hollandamerica.com ). The 793-passenger Prisendam is not dripping in luxury, but is cozy and very comfortable. The ship is slated to do a full circumnavigation round-trip out of Ft. Lauderdale that includes 36 ports of call on 22 different countries on six continents, including Antarctica. You'll be able to get more than a quick look at local attractions with overnight stays in Rio, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Mombasa and Bombay, plus calls to two ports in Libya, Tripoli and Benghazi. And there's more: this is the only world cruise to dip down to the South Pole, sailing to way-off-the-beaten-track places like Deception and Elephant Islands, where Shackleton's crew hunkered down for 105 days awaiting rescue. But there will be no roughing it aboard the Prisendam . The range of staterooms starts with small inside cabins and goes all the way up to a 724-square-foot one-bedroom Penthouse Veranda Suite, with an ocean view whirlpool tub, DVD player and mini-bar.

Departing January 5, 2006, the full 105-day world cruise in a standard inside cabin starts at $23,838 per person ($207 a day), while you can get the Penthouse Suite for $150,038 per person ($1,429 a day).

To book any of these grand world voyages, contact a travel agency specializing in high-end travel, including The Cruise Professionals (tel. 800/265-3838 ; www.cruiseprofessionals.com ) and Largay Travel (tel. 800/955-6872 ; www.largaytravel.com ).

* Note: Silversea Cruises plans to offer a world cruise in 2007.

11 epic around-the-world cruises that will check off all your bucket list travel destinations

Janice Wald Henderson

Imagine the joys of traveling seamlessly from one bucket list country to another without packing and unpacking, switching hotels, boarding countless flights or even doing laundry.

Think it's a fantasy? It's actually a world cruise, the nirvana of many ocean-going devotees. As a bonus, most of these around-the-world voyages include enviable perks, like pre-cruise hotel stays, alcohol, shipboard credit, exclusive-access shore excursions — and, yes, laundry service.

Retired, taking a job hiatus or working remotely? A world cruise is a safe, easy and exhilarating way to score a global adventure beyond compare. You might even make new lifelong friends sharing similar interests.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

So, pull out your travel wish list and find an itinerary for those coveted destinations.

Here, you can learn more about what's involved in an around-the-world cruise and drool over 11 terrific choices across a range of fares for an incredible monthslong voyage at sea.

What is a world cruise?

Never mind the moniker, a world cruise may visit several continents but not circumnavigate the globe. Cruise lines usually designate one ship (a few offer two) to sail about 100 days or longer — some even sail more than 200 days — without repeating ports.

World cruises traditionally start in January and end around April or May. They sail round-trip from one American city, such as San Francisco or Miami, or offer a choice of starting points on both coasts, making access easy.

What to know about world cruises

With so few world cruises available, book far in advance. Bookings open roughly two years in advance, and some small-ship cruises sell out within hours. You'll need the extra time to make arrangements to leave your home for months. For that reason, this story will focus on 2025 world cruises.

Related: Hot cruises you'll need to book at least 1 year in advance — maybe even 2!

Around-the-world cruise cost

Such lengthy sailings cost plenty. The bigger ship lines offer the lowest fares, although extra fees for what's not included (such as shore excursions and alcohol) can add up quickly. If contemplating a big-ship voyage, read the inclusions carefully, as they vary among lines.

Luxury vessels bundle many costly amenities into the fare, like business- or first-class plane tickets and luxury hotel stays, and charge the most. They also deliver fine dining, pampering service, glam surroundings and impressive special events. (Silversea Cruises has previously rented out an entire island to entertain its world cruise guests.)

Thus, expect considerable price differences. Count on spending about $20,000 per person minimum to score an entry-level accommodation on the bigger ships and approximately $80,000 to $90,000 per person for an ultraluxury vessel.

Note that for the poshest lines, "entry-level" may mean a spacious, elegant suite with a veranda. For other lines, the most basic cabin is a small, windowless room.

Thanks to an overwhelming response to its 2024 world cruise (which is currently waitlisted), Azamara announced itineraries for both 2025 and 2026, both aboard the 684-passenger Azamara Onward.

Azamara Onward is the newest ship to join the Miami-based line's four-vessel fleet. The ship's size provides an intimate experience and allows it to call on small towns bigger ships can't access.

For 2025, the 155-night, 37-country voyage begins in San Diego and ends in Southampton, England, with visits to exciting locales in French Polynesia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Italy, France and others.

Along the way, world cruisers can sample authentic Hawaiian cuisine; explore the unspoiled beaches and the lush rainforest on Stewart Island, New Zealand; and visit the world's largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia.

The itinerary will include a pre-sailing welcome party, exclusive cultural events, concierge service and other upscale perks.

The 2026 world cruise sets sail from Miami and concludes in Barcelona. The itinerary for this 155-night expedition features some of the world's most iconic landmarks and sites.

Cruisers will have the opportunity to explore the great pyramid of Kukulcan and other ancient Mayan sites in Chichen Itza, Mexico; wander among Rio de Janeiro's architectural gems and experience the awe of Iguazu Falls in Brazil; sample Peruvian cuisine and soak in the landscape of Machu Picchu in Cusco; scale the Great Wall of China; and enjoy other bucket-list worthy adventures.

The 2025 world cruise departs Jan. 6, 2025. Prices start from $89,001 per person.

Availability is limited on the 2025 150-night world cruise on the 700-passenger Seven Seas Mariner, sailing round-trip from Miami to San Francisco. This itinerary includes cruising in Antarctica, the Chilean fjords, French Polynesia, Taipei and Bali.

Fred. Olsen Announces New 80-Day World Sailing for 2023

  • March 4, 2021

world cruise 80 days

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has announced its new itinerary, entitled “Around the World in 80 Days,” which aims to follows the footsteps of a fictional explorer, Phileas Fogg.

The 80-day voyage will take place in the 150th anniversary year of the novel onboard the Borealis and call into many of the ports visited by Fogg, including Mumbai, Hong Kong, Shanghai and San Francisco, the cruise line wrote in a press release.

According to the press release, the Borealis will depart in February 2023 from both Southampton and Liverpool and is “timed to take advantage of a number of exceptional experiences, with a visit into Safaga coinciding with the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamen and calls into Japan specially-timed to capture the beautiful cherry blossom in bloom.”

According to Fred. Olsen’s Head of Destination Experience and Itinerary Planning. Martin Lister, the ship will be calling into Japan just in time to see the “seasonal cherry blossom in bloom, with chances to learn more about its connection with rice growing, and to take part in a local tea ceremony.”

“In India, guests can immerse themselves in the Hindu culture and traditions, or become a Dabbawala for a day in the bustling city of Mumbai and join in their seamless delivery operation,” Lister said. “A visit to the remote Pacific islands of Hawaii will offer the chance to witness the still active Kilauea volcano.”

“Plus, there will also be chances to enjoy explorations of many towns, cities and islands in-between, as well as transits of both the Panama and Suez Canals. It really is set to be a trip of a lifetime, and we can’t wait to take our guests on this journey with us in 2023,” he added.

The itinerary will be released on March 5. Passengers will also enjoy up to £500 per person to spend onboard, Fred. Olsen said.

And if this itinerary sells as well as the cruise line's past global sailings, this 180-day vacation could be fully booked in the coming weeks.

world cruise 80 days

Over the last two years, Viking's world cruises have booked exceptionally well.

world cruise 80 days

Its previous 2021 and 2022 around the world cruises sold out in a few weeks, records for the cruise line.

Demand for extended sailings has continued to stay "strong," Torstein Hagen, the company's chairman, said in a press release.

And very few itineraries are as "extended" as an around the world cruise.

world cruise 80 days

In December 2024, the 930-guest Viking Sky will depart from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and begin its 180-day journey.

world cruise 80 days

The vessel and its passengers will then visit 37 countries across five continents …

world cruise 80 days

… stopping at a total of 85 ports with 13 one to two-night stays in destinations like Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

world cruise 80 days

After departing Florida, the ship will travel through ports in Central America before heading through the Panama Canal and up the US West Coast.

world cruise 80 days

From the US mainland, the ship will sail through the Pacific Ocean with stops in Hawaii and French Polynesia on its way to New Zealand and Australia.

world cruise 80 days

After, it'll begin its long trek through Asia, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe …

world cruise 80 days

… before traversing the Atlantic Ocean to its final destination: New York in June 2025.

world cruise 80 days

Along the way, guests will get to explore destinations like Cartagena, Colombia, Yangon, Myanmar, Lisbon, Portugal, and Reykjavik, Iceland.

world cruise 80 days

But if living on a cruise ship for six months seems too long, travelers can also join the sailing when it stops in Los Angeles for a 163-day vacation.

world cruise 80 days

There's also the option for an even shorter 138-day and 121-day leg that will sail from Florida and Los Angeles, respectively, to London.

world cruise 80 days

There will be about 60 days at sea with no ports of call on the full 180-day itinerary.

world cruise 80 days

To stave off boredom, travelers can spend time exploring the cruise ship's amenities …

world cruise 80 days

… which include two pools, a spa, and several dining, lounge, and bar venues.

world cruise 80 days

And unlike most modern mega cruise ships, the Viking Sky's eight restaurants are all included at no extra cost.

world cruise 80 days

But this doesn't mean it'll be a budget cruise.

world cruise 80 days

The sailing starts at almost $80,000 per person for the 270-square-foot veranda stateroom.

world cruise 80 days

This price then shoots up to nearly $300,000 for the owners' suite.

world cruise 80 days

But if you're thinking of booking these ultra-luxurious accommodations, you're already too late. The 1,448-square-foot stateroom is already sold out, according to Viking's website.

Press Release

NEW P&O WORLD CRUISE ITINERARIES DEBUT FOR 2005

Passengers can choose to go "Around the World in 80 Days" or take the 103-day "Grand Voyage"

North American passengers looking for an around-the-world adventure have an opportunity to enjoy P&O Cruises' unique British-style cruise experience with two new two new world cruise itineraries for 2005. Potential world cruisers may choose to travel "Around the World in 80 Days" aboard Oriana, or take a 103-day "Grand Voyage" aboard Aurora.

Both vessels will sail roundtrip from Southampton, England giving travelers the opportunity to explore exotic ports of call in Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, North America and South America while crossing six of Earth's eight oceans. Oriana's "Around the World in 80 Days" adventure -- encompassing 29 ports in 20 different countries -- departs January 7, 2005, returning March 29. Passengers with fewer than 80 vacation days to space can choose from shorter segments ranging from 13 to 61 days. Aurora's "Grand Voyage" will depart January 9, 2005 and return April 22, taking in 40 ports of call in 23 countries. Segments of 13 to 83 days are also available to passengers who want to book a shorter trip.

"Around the World in 80 Days"

Following in the footsteps of Jules Verne's Phileas Fogg, the 1,800-passenger Oriana manages to cover the globe in just 80 days. The ship sets a westward course from Southampton to her first port of call Ponta Delgada, in the Azores, continuing to Barbados and Curacao. Oriana will then pass through the Panama Canal reaching Acapulco and San Francisco, before arriving at Honolulu. Next passengers will travel to the South Pacific, stopping at island destinations including; Pago Pago, American Samoa; Nuku 'Alofa, Tonga and Aukland, New Zealand. In Australia, the vessel calls at Sydney, Brisbane and Whitsunday Islands. Following the Australian ports of call, Oriana will take her passengers to Southeast Asia stopping in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia; Hong Kong; Da Nang, Vietnam; Singapore; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Phuket, Thailand. Next up is Colombo, Sri Lanka; and two ports of call in India -- Cochin and Mumbai -- before continuing to Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Oriana will then sail through the famous Suez Canal, before reaching her next ports of call -- Port Said, Egypt; Athens, Barcelona and back to her homeport, Southampton where the voyage ends.

"The Grand Voyage"

P&O's 1,870-passenger Aurora offers travelers on an even more extensive journey with the "Grand Voyage." This new itinerary starts by sailing west to Madeira from Southampton and continuing to St. Vincent, Cape Verde. Aurora will then cross the Atlantic making two calls in Brazil -- Recife and Rio de Janeiro -- before reaching Montevideo in Uruguay. Continuing her voyage along the coast of South America, Oriana will stop at Buenos Aires and Puerto Madryn in Argentina, the Falkland Islands and around Cape Horn to Ushuaia, Argentina. Next, the ship visits three ports of call in Chile -- Punta Arenas, Puerto Montt and Santiago -- before off across the Pacific to Easter Island.

In the South Pacific, Aurora passengers will enjoy stopping at Papeete, Bora Bora, Nuku 'Alofa and Auckland. The ship then travels to three ports of call in Australia--Sydney, Brisbane and Darwin-- before heading to the port of Singapore. Next up is a call at Nha Trang, Vietnam, followed by Hong Kong and two stops in Japan -- Osaka and Tokyo.

Aurora will then circle back across the Pacific Ocean stopping along the way at Midway Islands, Honolulu and Hilo, Hawaii followed by San Francisco. Heading south, the ship makes two stops in Mexico -- Acapulco and Huatulco -- before a transit through the Panama Canal. Aurora then carries passengers on a trans-Atlantic journey to Southampton, stopping at Aruba, Dutch Antilles; Barbados and Ponta Delgada, before returning home.

Fares booking early for Oriana's "World Cruise" and Aurora's "Grand Voyage" start at $2,350 for 13-day segments. Full world cruise rates begin at $12,200 for Oriana and $15,400 for Aurora. Bookings for these adventures can be made at http://www.pocruises.com or through one's local travel agent. Anyone lucky enough to go on one of these cruises has a moral obligation to write an extensive review for Cruise Critic, as well as detailed port reports for the destinations board, so the rest of us can kick back over our cups of coffee and dream!

I can't decide if it is my lack of money or lack of vacation time that is preventing me from going on this cruise (oh yea, it is both!).

srphnx

Some day when my age matches my old fogey attitutude, I am doing this... I swear. Right now... too many resposibilities... but I am getting in 35 days this year.

WOW - 35 days in impressive!

I thought I was going to get 21 days in but it looks more like 14 this year :( New car purchase is cutting into my cruise budget.

Posted response on similar thread - but will do so here again.

Would love to go, particularly on Oriana (been on the old Oriana, but not the newe), but can't convince wife to go for that long.

Longest I have gotten her to go was on old Sky Princess, 27 nights, San Fransico to Sydney - but she won't go for a full world cruise, so we are doing it in two or three week segments at a time.

Thanks Druke - after I posted the PR I started thinking about if I could actually do a 100 day cruise and then posted the other thread.
