Just like many resident Victorians, Phillip Island has been a long-standing summer destination for my family for many years. The popular coastal island in South Gippsland is the go-to for a beach holiday, with a rugged coastline indented with sandy beaches, waves worthy of surfers of all levels, and the bubbly main hub of Cowes. However, not until I really got to explore the island on my own recently, did I realise that there’s actually so many things to do on Phillip Island.

It really is a destination for everyone and at any time of the year, with incredible wildlife encounters (and it’s not just the famous Penguin Parade), interesting windswept rock formations, and some of the most spectacular sunsets on the south coast.

Whether you’re planning a weekend away or a longer holiday, here’s a comprehensive look at the best things to do on Phillip Island, from all the best beaches and walks to cafes to visit and events not to miss.

Why You Should Spend a Weekend at Phillip Island

It’s not hard to convince people to head to Phillip Island. In fact, it’s one of the most popular holiday destinations in Victoria with many families heading down to “the island” over summer. The permanent population is about 10,000 but this swells to more than double as the island comes to life in the warmer months.

But there’s much more to Phillip Island than the Penguin Parade. This is undoubtedly the main attraction. Many people drive all the way from Melbourne on a day trip or for a weekend just to see the fairy penguins come ashore, but I can wholeheartedly say that you should leave enough time to explore the rest of the island.

From its wild and rugged coastline indented with sandy beaches and hidden coves to the vibrant hub of Cowes with plenty of cosy cafes and unique boutique shops, the island offers something for everyone. The laidback island lifestyle means surfing, beach hopping, coffee sipping, sunset watching, and long walks on the beach are on the menu. So, grab your bathers, pack your walking shoes, and bring a sense of adventure to explore Phillip Island.

Bit of History

Phillip Island belongs to the Custodial Land of the Yallock Bulluk people of the Bunurong/Boonwurrung clan of the Kulin nation. They referred to the island as Millowl, and it was an important hunting ground for fish and small marsupials. Ochre was also available on the island, a natural clay used for body decorations during ceremonies. 

George Bass was the first European to visit the island in 1798 on his voyage of the south coast. The island was named after Sir Arthur Phillip, who was the first governor of New South Wales.

How to Get to Phillip Island

Melbourne to Phillip Island: 142 km or about a 2 hour drive via M1and taking the Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road Exit, then following the South Gippsland Highway from Koo Wee Rup to San Remo and across the bridge to Phillip Island

Cowes is the main town on the island. Once you cross the bridge from the mainland at San Remo, Phillip Island Road will basically lead you to Cowes on the northern coast of the island. This is where most people base themselves for a visit, with many accommodation and dining options found in the town.

However, there are other small towns on the island too, like the small fishing village of Rhyll, the surf village of Cape Woolamai, and holiday house haven of Smiths Beach.

It’s not a very big island, so getting around by car is pretty easy. You’ll be able to explore large parts of the island all within a day.

When to Visit Phillip Island

You can really visit Phillip Island at any time of the year. Summer can get very chaotic and busy, with traffic backed up from Cowes all the way across the bridge to San Remo and beyond. This also means the beaches will be packed and it’ll be hard to get a spot at one of the cafes. But, you will at least get to enjoy some warm weather!

Phillip Island does get pretty damn cold, especially on icy windy days in winter , when visiting the beaches can be quite unpleasant. For this reason, autumn and spring are great seasons to visit, especially if you want fewer crowds and cheaper prices.

I’ve visited mostly over summer, but my most recent trip was in early autumn and I have to say it was pretty magical. February to April probably presents the best time, in my opinion, the summer crowds have gone but some warmer weather tends to stick around a bit longer.

There’s so much to do down on the island. While most people might just head for a day trip to see the Penguin Parade, it really offers so much for people open to exploring the coastline. From the shopping and dining hub of Cowes to the stunning beaches all around the entire coast, you’ll find something to do for everyone from families to couples, and solo adventurers.

If you want to get outdoors and admire some of the most spectacular stretches of the island’s coastline, then heading out to Cape Woolamai is your best bet. While it’s known as being home to one of the best surf beaches in Victoria, Cape Woolamai also has the best walks to do on Phillip Island.

I’d highly recommend going for the full circuit hike. This 8.5km Cape Woolamai Circuit Walk takes in the best viewpoints and dramatic cliffs of the headland, including the highest point on the island at Woolamai Hill. The trail can be pretty quiet too, with few people opting to do the full loop, so you can gaze over the island without the crowds.

There are also shorter walking options at Cape Woolamai, like an out and back walk to the Pinnacles, or you can simply go for a walk along the surf beach too.

Watch the Phillip Island Pro Surf Contest at Cape Woolamai

Woolamai Surf Beach is home to one of the most soughtafter annual World Surfing League surf competitions in Australia: the Phillip Island Pro QS1000 . Held in November every year, the surf contest draws competitors from around the country and across the world who are looking to gain points for qualification into the Challenger Series, the pathway to qualifying for the World Tour.

With only a few hundred spectators expected each year at the event, it’s a much easier surf contest to get up close and personal with talented surfers than bigger events like at Bells Beach in Torquay .

Explore Churchill Island

A popular family activity on Phillip Island, Churchill Island is a small island off the coast. It was known as Moonar’mia by the Bunurong People, however, it was turned into a farming and holiday retreat for Europeans after Lt. James Grant disembarked there from Lady Nelson in 1801.

The historical buildings and Victorian gardens are now open for visitors to explore on foot. It’s also still home to an active farm, with farm animals in the paddocks around the island. To access the buildings and farm, however, you’ll need to purchase an entry ticket. But, the walking trails and cafe are free to visit.

If you park in the main carpark, you’re free to head off on the trails that circumnavigate the island or sit in the garden to enjoy a picnic. It’s a very popular place for families, especially with the farm animals and range of activities like milking a cow and sheep shearing for kids.

Find the Forrest Caves

And no, the caves are not actually in the forest. A hidden but now not-so-hidden gem on Phillip Island is Forrest Caves. While the turnoff to the carpark just before Surf Beach seems a little off the beaten track, it has become a popular little spot. Once you head down the steps to the beach, turn left and walk for a few hundred metres to find these sea caves created over thousands of years of erosion. 

It’s definitely an Instagram-worthy spot, with the unique caves as a beautiful backdrop to interesting photos. However, be sure to visit at low tide , as the caves can only be accessed at this time. It makes for a quick little stop on the drive to Cowes, so check tide times before arriving.

Escape the Crowds at Rhyll Wetland and Bird Sanctuary

For a peaceful retreat away from the crowds on the island, a wander through the Rhyll Wetland and Bird Sanctuary is ideal. Known as an important habitat for migratory waders and resident birds, the mangroves and wetlands are protected for international conservation efforts.

There are a couple of walks and boardwalks to explore in the sanctuary around the fishing village of Rhyll. The full trail from Rhyll to Conservation Hill carpark is 7km return, or you can just do the mangrove boardwalk from Conservation Hill for 1.2km return.

Learn to Surf at Smiths Beach (and YCW Beach)

I’ve never seen so many surfers in the water than I did at YCW Beach and Smiths Beach. On a weekend, this place is pumping full of surfers of all skill levels. It’s widely considered the best place to learn to surf on the island too, so you’ll see groups of groms with instructors out there.

Smiths Beach is the main beach with a small village of houses and shops. Parking can be full on a weekend, so arrive early. You’ll also find the Smiths Beach General Store and Island Surf Boards and Surf School just back from the beach for your morning coffee, board hire, and lessons.

The next cove to the west is known as YCW Beach. If Smiths Beach is too busy with surf school groups, you can head there for some waves too.

Check Out Pyramid Rock Lookout

One of the best lookouts on Phillip Island is Pyramid Rock. The pyramid-shaped rocky outcrop sits off the southern coast of the island, and is a landmark that can be seen from so many other places, like Cape Woolamai and The Nobbies.

While it requires a 3km drive on a dirt road off Back Beach Road, the short walk to the viewpoint on the boardwalk is well-worth it. You can gaze down both sides of the coastline of the island, and perhaps even spot some whales in winter.

Do the Pyramid Rock to Berrys Beach Walk

One of the best things to do on Phillip Island for outdoor lovers is the walk from Pyramid Rock to Berrys Beach. The 2.6km one way hike is not overly difficult, as it follows the top of the cliffs between these two scenic spots on a well-maintained trail. 

From Pyramid Rock, the walk heads west to Berrys Beach. There’s a great lookout about 1.3km along at Red Bluff, which can make for a shorter out and back option for those short on time. But, it’s worth continuing to Berrys Beach, if you can.

Berrys Beach is a really beautiful surf beach, that is often where you’ll find local surfers getting away from the crowds. There are also rockpools to explore at low tide around the edges. There’s a toilet at Berrys Beach carpark and Pyramid Rock carpark.

Head Out to S.S. Speke Ship Wreck at Kitty Miller Bay

A ship wreck is always an intriguing point of interest and Phillip Island has its own at Kitty Miller Bay. There’s a short walk from the beach carpark around the cliffs to reach a viewpoint of the shipwreck, from where you can scramble down to the beach to get a closer look.

The SS Speke was a huge three-masted steel ship built in Wales in 1891, and was one of the largest in the world at the time. In 1907, a navigational error meant the ship ran aground close to the reef. One passenger drowned, but the rest of the crew survived and made it to land safely. The ship was cracked in two by the strong waves, so it was left to wreck where it still lies today.

The bow or nose of the ship is the most prominent remaining piece, as it lies on its side on the reef. It’s obviously best seen at low tide when you can see more of the wreck.

To get to the wreck, park at Kitty Miller Bay carpark and walk down to the beach. Turn left and walk along the sand a bit, and you should see a path heading up and over the headland. Cross the rocks and reach the trail, which is easy to follow up to the top of the cliffs. At the end of the trail, you’ll have a good view looking down to the wreck, but to reach it you’ll have to walk a bit further down and around to the beach. It’s only about 2km return all together.

Drive Out to The Nobbies

At the very far end of the island is The Nobbies. If anything characterises the rugged coast of the island, then The Nobbie is it. This incredible outcrop of rock formations has been sculpted over time by high winds and strong swells that come directly from Antarctica to the south.

At the carpark, there’s the Nobbies Centre – Home of the Antarctic Journey , which has a paid entry ticket to its museum. But you can just simply access the boardwalk of The Nobbies for free. The short walk has a few lookouts over the rocky peninsula and back along the coast towards Cape Woolamai in the distance.

There’s usually plenty of sea birds to see, as well as seals and penguins if you’re lucky. It’s a great spot to explore before heading to the Penguin Parade (more on this below).

Join the Crowd at the Penguin Parade

Did I purposely not put this on top of the list… perhaps. Phillip Island Penguin Parade is undoubtedly the main attraction on the island. It’s also one of the biggest tourist attractions in Victoria, with people flocking towards Summerlands in the evening all year round to watch over 30,000 Fairy Penguins come ashore.

After spending the daytime searching for food in the Southern Ocean, these little penguins return to their protected nests on the far coast of Phillip Island. Amongst the dunes of Summerland Bay at dusk, there are viewing platforms and boardwalks to watch this natural wonder occur from a safe distance as not to disturb the little guys.

This is serious business now. It’s a heavily regulated experience, which means you must book tickets in advance to attend. These can sell out well in advance during summer and on weekends, but less so for the rest of the year. General viewing tickets start from $30 per adult, or there are more exclusive viewing options, including underground viewing from $85 per adult. Book a tour below.

Meet Local Surfers at Shelly Beach and Right Point

As part of the four breaks on Phillip Island recognised as a National Surfing Reserve, Cat Bay is where you’ll find experienced surfers catching left and right-hand reef breaks around the bay. Located on the north coast in Summerlands, just inside the gateway to the Penguin Parade and The Nobbie area on Ventnor Road, it’s one of the best surf spots on the island.

Of the breaks in the bay, Shelly Beach has a large carpark and a wide cove that is known for great surfing opportunities for beginners. Waves rarely get too crazy there, but it can get busy especially if the waves at the south coast beaches are onshore.

On the other hand, Right Point just over from Shelley Beach has reef breaks that local surfers prefer. There’s a good carpark there and viewing area, which is also great for surf photographers.

Find the Old Pier at Cat Bay

If you’re standing at Right Point, then you’ll see to your right in Cat Bay is the remnants of an old wooden pier. While this isn’t really anything that exciting, it does make for a stunning photography location.

The old wooden beams are still standing and very few people other than surfers venture onto the sand there, so you’ll likely have the place to yourself for photos. It’s obviously best at sunset time, although be aware of the closure of the gates on Ventnor Road after sunset time.

Visit Flynns Beach

Located on the north-eastern side of Cat Bay, Flynns Beach is a long stretch of sand popular for families, surfers and those looking to relax on the sand. There’s a decent carpark there and a lovely walk through overhanging trees to get to the beach. There’s a good viewpoint over the beach, from where you can watch surfers do their thing.

Otherwise, it’s a great spot to walk or relax on the sand. Although, the beach is not patrolled so swimming is not advised with strong rips present.

Watch the Sunset from Grossard Point Lookout

I think this actually might be a true hidden gem on Phillip Island. I stumbled upon this spot when I was driving around and looking for somewhere to watch the sunset. At the end of Grossard Point Road in Ventnor, I found a gravel carpark area and a little side trail that led to a viewing platform . It’s perfect for sunset!

You can also get down to the beach from the carpark and go for a walk along the sand. It’s far quieter than other places, although Ventnor is full of holiday homes so it can get busier in summer.

Relax on Red Rocks Beach

A unique beach on Phillip Island, Red Rock Beach is characterised by its distinct red-coloured cliffs. The unique red rocks provide a stunning backdrop to relatively calm waters and hard packed golden sand, perfect for laying a towel down for the day.

To reach the beach, park at one of the spots along Penguin Avenue to the west side of Cowes town. However, parking is limited there, so you may have to park along Church Street or walk up the beach from Cowes.

Spend the Day at Cowes Jetty and Beach

This is where you’ll find most people hanging out on a hot day. Cowes is the main hub of activity on the island and the front beach and jetty are where you’ll find everyone enjoying the sea.

The beach here is usually quite calm and protected and is perfect for families. There’s plenty of space on the sand or up on the grass slopes behind the beach to leave your towel while you go for a dip.

The jetty is one of the best places to be at sunset time, or you can just enjoy a stroll at any time of the day to watch the fishermen and get a nice view of town. It’s also where some of the tours and whale watching cruises leave from (more details below).

The esplanade along the main beach and jetty in Cowes is also where the fantastic Island Foreshore Market takes place. Scattered around amongst the trees and boardwalk behind the beach, you’ll find food, clothes, jewellery and other crafts for sale over the afternoon and evening. Dates vary throughout the year, but it happens weekly in the height of summer on Saturdays.

Browse the Cowes Shops and Cafes

The popular town of Cowes may feel a little tourist-oriented at first glance, but it has some incredible cafes, bars, and boutique shops that are worth checking out. Walking up the main street, Thompson Avenue, on one side and coming back down the other, you’ll find lots of hidden gems for shopping and eating, here are some not to be missed shops and cafes:

• Island Wholefoods: My fave cafe hands down. Serving fully plant based and organic ingredients, this small cafe is always busy with some delicious dishes on the menu that will even sway meat eaters. They also have great Gluten Free options, and their smoothies and hot drinks are to die for.
• Isola Gelato: Close to the pier at the northern end of Thompson Avenue, this is the best spot for some ice cream. They also have dairy free options, with the dark chocolate being the clear winner for me.
• Phillip Island Coffee Co.: Often considered to have the best coffee in town, Phillip Island Coffee Co on Thompson Avenue is your go-to for a take away or a cosy brunch spot.
• Luxe Isle: Close to Island Wholefoods, this boho chic boutique has stunning pieces, including jewellery, swim suits, and flowing dresses, all perfect for your island dream fit.
• Salvos Stores Cowes: Calling all op shoppers out there, this is definitely one of the best I’ve been to. I spent so much time browsing all the racks and came out with a bunch of new items for under $50 total. It’s a must visit!

Do a Lap at the Grand Prix Circuit

Taking up a large tract of land on the south of the island, the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit hosts famous motorsport events including the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and Superbike World Championships. 

When these events aren’t on however, the precinct is home to a go-kart track where you can imagine yourself driving an F1 vehicle around the circuit. The replica track is available for 10-minute sessions, from $35 per driver. It’s a fun activity for the whole family or for a special occasion.

Spot Koalas at the Koala Conservation Reserve

One of the best family-friendly places on Phillip Island is the Koala Conservation Reserve. Set amongst some beautiful native bushland, the reserve has a couple of treetop boardwalks where you’re guaranteed to see koalas in their natural habitat. 

Otherwise, there are other trails amongst the six acres of the reserve or you can learn more about the conservation efforts through displays in the visitor centre. Tickets start from around $15 per adult and can be bought online .

Discover the Farm-to-Table Culture

You might be surprised to find that much of the island is actually covered in productive farmland . From dairy farms to vineyards, there’s an active culture of farm-to-table cuisine and produce. Some of the best ways to explore this side of the island is to visit the farm stores and local cafes specialising in farm-to-table goodness.

The Store in Ventnor is a fabulous little cafe and shop, selling quality coffee, fresh sourdough, local cheeses, delicious toasties, fruit and veggies, fresh flowers and plants.

For something a bit more sophisticated, the Wild Food Farm in Rhyll is a cafe that focuses on native bush ingredients and local produce. Open for breakfast and lunch, it’s also worth heading into their shop where you can pick up homemade muesli, tea, spices, relishes, jams, and sauces.

Spot Whales and Seals on a Wildlife Cruise

During the winter months from May until October, you can spot migratory whales off the coast of Phillip Island. The best way to get closer to humpback whales, southern right whales and orcas as they migrate from Antarctica to Australia’s shores is on a whale watching tour.

If you’re not visiting during winter, you can still head out on a wildlife cruise to see seals and other birds that are at home on the island throughout the year. Departing from Cowes and Rhyll, it’s ideal to book in advance if visiting on a weekend. Have a look below.

See the Island from Above on a Scenic Helicopter Flight

While seeing the island and it’s dramatic coastline from earthside is worthwhile, there’s nothing quite like taking a helicopter ride over the sea cliffs. From the air, you’ll be able to see all the major attractions on the island from a birds eye view perspective, including Cape Woolamai, The Nobbies, Pyramid Rock, and the Grand Prix Circuit. 

From a few minutes to half an hour, there’s multiple options for flight paths around the island depending on what you want to see.

Indulge at the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory

For sweet tooth’s looking for a chocolate fix, the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory is one of the most popular places on the island. Families flock to the venue, open every day of the year except Christmas. There’s a lot to explore, from the shop and cafe to a tour of the factory, where you can delve into the magic behind making the delicious Belgian chocolates.

Another spot that can get busy during school holidays and weekends, I’d recommend visiting outside of peak times. It’s located on the main Phillip Island Road in Newhaven, so it makes for a nice stop before you get to Cowes.

Eat Fish n Chips at San Remo Fishermans Co-Op

Just off the island where the bridge begins, a must stop is at San Remo. If you time it well for lunchtime, you’ll be able to indulge in some of the best fish and chips you’ll find on the Bass Coast. Sitting back with the view of Phillip Island and the San Remo jetty, they serve some of the freshest fish you can get.

They also sell fresh fish in their shop, if you prefer to take some and cook it up yourself later. The kids will also love the pelican feeding event that happens right in front of the co-op every day at midday!

Hike the George Bass Coastal Walk

Technically not on Phillip Island, but close enough? The George Bass Coastal Walk is one of the best day hikes in Victoria. The 8km one way coastal trail links San Remo and Kilcunda along the Bass Coast. It’s a stunning walk, as it follows the clifftops and skirts around coves and beaches between the two towns.

It can easily be completed as a day trip from Phillip Island or on your way down to the island. Along with the Cape Woolamai Circuit, the George Bass Coastal Walk will have you in absolute awe of the rugged Gippsland coast.

Start with a visit to the Koala Conservation Centre – a large nature park which houses an array of koalas, kangaroos, echidnas and bats. This park is unique; unlike a zoo, the Koala Conservation Centre allows visitors get the chance to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Located right next to the popular Koala Conservation Centre on Phillip Island, A Maze’N Things is conveniently located and sure to keep your kids entertained for hours. Spend a few hours here and get lost in the challenging maze or play a game of minigolf with family and friends. For the more adventurous, try the challenging SkyTrail ropes course which is suitable for adults and kids alike.

Located on a picturesque landscape bordered by the Bass Strait, the Nobbies located on the south-west corner of Phillip Island. The Nobbies is a popular spot to see seals lazing around on Seal Rocks and viewing the magnificent landscape of Phillip Island in all its glory.

In the evening, head to the famous Penguin Parade which is located nearby. Here, visitors to the island will be able to see hundreds of tiny penguins as they emerge from the sea and waddle up to their nesting boxes in search of food and shelter. The Penguin Parade is a completely natural occurrence and the Phillip Island nature park has established viewing platforms and boardwalks so that visitors can watch this amazing spectacle without disturbing the penguins.

Growing up on the nearby Mornington Peninsula , visiting Phillip Island was a regular occurrence when I was little. When you’re surrounded by iconic Australian wildlife and gorgeous beaches, you take it for granted. It wasn’t until a recent trip back home that I saw it through the eyes of a visitor. Travelling the world has given me a fresh perspective and a newfound appreciation for my home country and where I grew up. Phillip Island is a popular holiday destination amongst locals, yet it’s still a hidden gem to outsiders which is why I created this in-depth Phillip Island travel guide, so you can discover it too!

Phillip Island is located 120 kilometres from Melbourne just off Australia’s southern coast. The easy drive down takes just 90 minutes. At its widest point, Phillip Island is around 24 kilometres long and 9 kilometres wide which makes it easy to see and do a lot in a short amount of time. At most, it takes just 20 minutes to reach the far corner of this 101 km2 (39 sq mi) island.

1. see the pelicans feeding at san remo beach.

Stingrays in the water at San Remo foreshore

Every day at 12 noon, the San Remo Fishermans Co-Op feed a group of pelicans on the nearby foreshore. Overlooking the Phillip Island bridge, a flock of pelicans arrive early and patiently wait for one of the Co-Op’s fishermen to come out and give them a fishy snack.

This tradition started back in 1985 when pelicans started to come here to eat the unwanted fish offcuts that fishermen would throw overboard. Today, the pelican feeding is regulated by the Department of Environment, Land, Water, and Planning and is undertaken by well-trained staff. 

The feeding lasts for about 10 minutes, during which the fisherman gives a short educational presentation that focuses on the Pelicans diet, lifestyle and how we can improve conservation and environmental efforts to protect them and similar species.

Keep an eye out on the water too because you may spot some large Stingrays which often glide through the shallow waters here.

Tips for seeing the Pelican’s feeding at San Remo Pier

• Travel tips: I recommend arriving by 11:30 to ensure you get a car park. Use this time to wander along the pier and foreshore and pick up any litter you find on the beach. In the car park, there is a large pelican sculpture where you can place any bottle caps you pick up.

3. See Cadillac Canyon at Bore Beach, San Remo

Bore Beach faces the Bass Strait which means the high waves and strong currents here make even the most skilled surfers think twice before taking to the water. This is definitely not a beach you should swim in.

• How to get to Bore Beach: Bore Beach is located at the end of a long dirt road. A staircase leads you down the hill to the beach.
• Safety: The strong waves here are no joke. It wasn’t until AFTER I took this photo sitting on the edge of the canyon that I a local told me how several people have gone missing over the years at Bore Beach and other beaches in and around Phillip Island due to the deadly currents. Please be safe at all times.

4. Walk along the Phillip Island Coastal Reserve and see Phillip Island Bridge

• How to get to Phillip Island Coastal Reserve: Immediately after crossing over Phillip Island Bridge, turn left down Old Bridge Drive. This narrow road will lead you down the Phillip Island Caravan Park. There is a small public car park where you can park your car. From here, walk inside the caravan park’s main entrance and keep left. Look out for a sign that says “Beach Access”. Follow the path to the beach.

5. Ride “The Big Wave”

Ok, I have to admit that this one is a bit cheesy, but it’s kind of a tradition. The Big Wave is a giant wave sculpture that you stand inside of and pretend you’re riding a wave. Since it’s located on the main road as you arrive onto Phillip Island and it’s hard to miss, it’s an easy stop to make. There are two surf shops here and a cafe so you can always use that as an excuse to stop.

6. Visit the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory

7. Visit Churchill Island Heritage Farm and Churchill Island Farmers Market

Churchill Island is a bit like Inception as it’s an island located just off an island. Sitting just off Phillip Island’s northeast coast, Churchill Island is connected by a short single lane wooden bridge.

As you cross over onto the island, Cape Barren geese appear out of nowhere and block your passage, Highland cows rest in the shade, lazy windmill blades turn in the breeze, and friendly Clydesdale horses grazing in the fields.

Visiting the Churchill Island Heritage Farm is the perfect day out. Activities and educational demonstrations take place daily, including wagon rides, sheep shearing, working dogs, cow milking, and whip cracking.

One of the best ways to explore the island is by taking one of the two family-friendly walking trails. The 5-kilometre Churchill Island Loop is a great way to see the beautiful lush scenery and wildlife on the island and will take around 2 hours to complete. Alternatively, you can take the 2-kilometre North Point Loop which takes around an hour to complete. 

I recommend arriving around lunchtime. Either bring a packed lunch and have a picnic or dine in the cafe with an outdoor seating area.

On the fourth Saturday of each month, the island hosts the Churchill Island Farmers Market with over 40 selling local produce grown and made in the Gippsland area.

8. Walk along Woolamai Surf Beach, Cape Woolamai

Cape Woolamai was named by George Bass who, after passing it on his whaleboat voyage in 1798 thought the headland resembled the head of a snapper fish. Having learned some of the language of the Eora aboriginal people of Port Jackson near Sydney, Bass used the Eora’s word for this fish to name the cape.

Woolamai Surf Beach stretches for approximately 5 kilometres and provides ideal surfing conditions. It’s also popular with windsurfers.

• Facilities: Located at Woolamai Surf Beach is a large car park, toilets, lifesaving club, and a kiosk serving hot and cold food.

9. Explore the Cape Woolamai Coastal Walk

Cape Woolamai can be explored via three trails which are all connected. Each walking trail is highlighted with coloured markers and shows a map with distance covered, remaining, and estimated timings.

Pinnacles walk

Follow the green markers

This track is approximately 4 kilometres in length with an estimated walking time of 2 hours return.

Old Granite Quarry Walk

Follow the blue markers

This walk is approximately 6 kilometres in length with an estimated walking time of 3 hours return.

Cape Woolamai Beacon Walk 

Follow the black markers

This route is approximately 6.6 kilometres in length with an estimated walking time of 3.5-4 hours return.

Tips for visiting the Cape Woolamai Coastal Walk

• Track conditions: No experience is required to walk the Cape Woolamai Coastal Walk. Sections of the walk are sandy or hardened gravel and include stairs and a gentle incline as you reach the tip of the cape at The Beacon.
• Access: No cars are allowed beyond the Woolamai Surf Beach, so park the car, throw on some comfortable walking shoes and enjoy this easy-moderate hiking trail. 
• Trailhead: The trailhead used to start from the car park, however, this is now restricted to park ranger vehicles only. You can meet up with the trail by taking the stairs down to the beach and continuing towards your left. Keep walking along the beach until you come to another set of stairs which leads up to the trail.

Pinnacles walk, Cape Woolamai Coastal Walk

• How to get to The Pinnacles: As you take the stairs up from the beach, continue to your right along the path for about 15-20 minutes to The Pinnacles. Located here is a lookout, bench, and a precarious path down to the right.

Beacon Walk, Cape Woolamai Coastal Walk

Tips for visiting The Beacon, Cape Woolamai Coastal Walk

• How to get to The Beacon: With the Pinnacles behind you, continue along the same trail for about 1.6km. It will take you roughly 20 minutes to reach The Beacon.

Old Granite Quarry Walk and Gull Island Lookout, Cape Woolamai Coastal Walk

Approximately 700m further along the path you will pass through some thicker greenery with tall grass. Keep an eye out here for wallabies and kangaroos. It’s here you will come to a fork in the trail and the start of the Old Granite Quarry Walk. Decide if you would like to continue to the Old Granite Quarry (turn right) or return to the car park directly (keep left). 

The Old Granite Quarry is all that remains of this 19th-century quarry which was in operation for just 2 years. Melbourne builders were supplied with local granite that was split and blasted here supply before it was decommissioned. During low tide, you can see parts of the old jetty that was used to transport the granite and drill holes in the huge granite boulders.

Tips for visiting Old Granite Quarry Walk and Gull Island Lookout, Cape Woolamai Coastal Walk

• How to get to Gull Island Lookout: From The Beacon, continue along the path for about 10 minutes. The Gull Island Lookout, is located on your right.
• How to get to the Old Granit Quarry: Allow an extra 25 minutes to reach the Old Granite Quarry from where the trail begins. You can decide to loop back to the car park along Cleeland Bight Beach or return along the path you came.

10. Explore the Forrest Caves 

Tips for visiting the Forrest Caves 

• How to get to Forrest Caves: From the car park, take the path to the beach and turn left at the bottom of the stairs and continue up for about 1 kilometre.
• Visit Duration: Allow 10-15 minutes to reach the Forrest Caves and an hour or so exploring the area  and large sand dunes.
• Facilities: There are toilets and showers and a medium-sized gravel car park.

11. Get some koala-ity time at the Koala Reserve

Volunteers are on hand to answer your questions as you explore the Koala Reserve. Located in natural Australian bushland, there is plenty of other wildlife to spot during your visit including kookaburras, eastern yellow robins, cockatoos, echidnas, wallabies, and bats. Inside the visitor centre is an informative and interactive display where you can learn all about the lives of koalas.

12. Wander along Rhyll Jetty and Rhyll Inlet Wetland Boardwalk

Located nearby is the Rhyll Inlet Wetland Boardwalk where you can literally walk on water. Connecting Rhyll Inlet to Conservation Hill, this easy 1.8 km walk takes just 20 minutes one-way to complete.

• Trailhead: Start at either Conservation Hill Reserve, 411 Cowes-Rhyll Rd or from Mcilwraith Rd, Rhyll VIC 3923, Australia
• Visit duration: Allow an hour for the return journey which includes stopping at information boards and wildlife spotting.

13. Eat, Sleep, and Stock up in Cowes

Thompson Avenue is the main commercial hub of Cowes runs and is lined with golden cypress trees which shade the numerous shops, hotels, cafes, restaurants, and supermarkets. Cowes is also the only place on the island with service stations (gas station), so make sure you fuel up here.

14. Visit Pyramid Rock Lookout 

The best view of Pyramid Rock is from Pyramid Rock Lookout accessed via a coastal cliff-top track with sweeping panoramic views over Phillip Island’s breathtaking coastline.

If you feel like stretching your legs, there is a 5-kilometer return trail that leads down to Berry’s Beach where you’ll find even more excellent views.

15. Explore the Shipwreck SS Speke

Tips for visiting Shipwreck SS Speke

• When to visit:  For the best visibility and access to the wreckage, I recommend visiting at between medium and low tide.
• Trail conditions: Moderately difficult. Wear appropriate footwear and check tide times.
• How to get to The SS Speke Shipwreck:  Park at the Kitty Millers Bay car park and take the stairs down to the beach. Continue east along the beach. After approximately 50 metres, the path will narrow and you’ll hug the coastline. Look out for a steep dirt path that leads up the hill and continues for 800 metres around the cover. This will lead you to the shipwreck on the opposite side of the cliffs.

17. Stroll along Shelley Beach at Cats Bay

Located at the far westerly tip of Phillip Island, access to Summerlands closes approximately 30 minutes before sunset each day to ensure the returning Little Penguins and other wildlife aren’t disturbed. Park rangers patrol the roads and will escort you out if you’re still inside this gated area.

• Facilities : Two car parks are located along Shelley Beach – one in the middle and another at Right Point .

18. Explore The Nobbies View Point and The Nobbies Visitor Centre

There are plenty of sea birds here too. During spring and early summer, you’ll see Silver Gulls nests and their chicks and Little Penguins going about their business.

Located 1.5 kilometres directly offshore from The Nobbies are Seal Rocks, home to Australia’s largest Australian Fur Seal colony. The best way to see them is by joining this seal-watching tour .

Follow the boardwalk around to the left (east) for The Nobbies View Point where you’ll see an impressive blowhole created by a sea cave that erupts during big swells.

The Nobbies Visitor Centre is home to the Antarctic Journey, an interactive and virtual journey into the wonderful world of the Southern Ocean and Antarctica with engaging exhibits and immersive experiences. 

Tips for visiting The Nobbies

• Travel tips: It can get very, and I mean VERY windy here. Dress warm and keep your hair out of face with a hood or tight beanie.
• Facilities : Located inside the Nobbies Visitor Centre are accessible toilets, a cafe, and a gift shop.
• Nobbies Centre: Open daily from 10:00 until 1 hour before sunset
• Antarctic Journey: Open daily from 10:00 until 2 hours before sunset
• The Nobbies Coast Walk is free
• Admission to Antarctic Journey is Adult (16 years+) – $18.00, Child (4-15 years) – $9.00, Family (2 adults and 2 children) – $45.00, Australian Pensioner (ID required) – $12.60
• Alternatively you can save by purchasing the Phillip Island 4 Park Pass which also includes the Nobbies Centre, Penguin Parade, Koala Centre and Churchill Island (choose this option after selecting your dates) 
• Tickets include daily guided tours which run at 11.00, 13.00, 15:00. The tour lasts for 20 minutes.

19. Take The Blvd to Southpoint Lookout and Summerlands lookout

Continue for another 3.5 kilometers where you’ll reach the Summerlands lookout. From here you can see the beach where the Penguin Parade takes place.

Tips for visiting The Blvd

• Drive with caution: This is a one-way road so drive slowly and carefully when passing. Even if you can’t see them, there is a lot of wildlife in the area and are easily hidden in the tall grass. There are no speed limit signs, however, I recommend sticking to 20km/h and keeping your eyes on the road at all times as wallabies may jump out. I had an echidna cross in front of me as I approached so I gently put on my hazard lights and stopped. A car behind me decided he couldn’t wait and pulled out from behind me and sped off, not considering why I had stopped. Needless to say, I was fuming! I honked profusely as he sped off, narrowly missing the echidna. 
• How to access The Blvd: From The Nobbies main car park, turn left towards a small car park on Ventnor Rd. Continue straight and look for a blue sign that says “Alternative Route to Penguin Parade.

20. Go Whale Watching

Between May and October humpback whales and southern right whales migrate along the coast of Phillip Island. Whale sightings are often posted on several Facebook pages including Two Bays Whale Project and Wildlife Coast Cruises . For live alerts, you can join the Phillip Island Whale Watchers group.

From land, the best places to spot whales are from Cape Woolamai, Pyramid Rock Surf Beach, The Nobbies and Summerlands area. Be sure to check Facebook and head out to the lookouts with your binoculars.

22. Entertain the whole family at A Maze’N Things

A Maze’N Things is an award-winning theme park with plenty of activities that will keep you entertained for hours. Start by navigating the 1-mile (2-km) maze then head to the illusion rooms where everything is topsy-turvy and watch as your friends and family shrink, grow, and float sideways. 

On Puzzle Island there is a confusing mirror maze and a chance for you to test your balance on a flying boogie board as you try to stay upright in a rotating room. 

A Maze’N Things newest attraction is Magic Manor which features interactive magic displays, illusions, caves, magic rabbits, a time machine, scare rooms, treasures, and flying chandeliers.

For an additional fee, get a rush of adrenaline on the SkyTrail a high ropes course or test your skill on the Maxi Mini-Golf Course.

23. Test your driving skills on Phillip Island Go Kart Track

Phillip Island is home to major racing events held at the island’s Grand Prix Circuit including the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and Superbike World Championship. This is your chance to experience this iconic venue. Get behind the wheel of a Go-Kart and navigate the 750-metre replica track situated alongside the original 4.445-kilometre circuit. Afterward, pick up your individual lap time printout.

The Phillip Island Circuit also offers a Guided Circuit Tour which gives you exclusive access to Race Control, Media Centre, and the winner’s podium.

From Melbourne

To get to Phillip Island by car from Melbourne, first take the Monash Freeway. As you approach Cranbourne, take the exit to Phillip Island which will take you along the South Gippsland Highway (M420). Follow the signs for Phillip Island onto the Bass Highway (A420). This road will take all the way down to San Remo where it turns into Phillip Island Tourist Road (B420). San Remo is the last town on the mainland before crossing over the bridge to Phillip Island.

From the Mornington Peninsula

To get to Phillip Island by car from the Mornington Peninsula, take Mornington Peninsula Fwy (M11) to Baxter-Tooradin Rd (C781). Turn right onto the South Gippsland Highway (M420). Follow the signs for Phillip Island onto the Bass Highway (A420). This road will take all the way down to San Remo where it turns into Phillip Island Tourist Road (B420). 

If you’re coming from the Mornington Peninsula, passenger ferries are available from Stony Point. Ferries operate all year around however they are not ‘all weather ferries’ and are subject to weather and sea conditions. Check weather conditions before travel for any cancellations. The V/Line coach services runs from Melbourne and stops at Grantville, Corinella, Bass, San Remo, Newhaven and Cowes daily. Plan your journey and check times on the official Public Transport Victoria website.

If you could think of one place in Victoria to be in that offers stunning coastal views the worlds largest australian fur seal colony and the most adorable colony of Little Penguins, then reading this guide to the best things to do on Phillip island is the only place you need to be.

Take a day trip south of Melbourne city centre past the Mornington Peninsula and enter Phillip Island – the tiny island nation completely geographically separated from mainland Victoria and connected via Phillip Island entrance bridge.

Sitting in the middle of WesternPort Bay surrounded by the western cape of the Mornington Peninsula and French island to the north, this small yet vast island is a weekend getaway you’ll be begging to return to.

At roughly 20km wide from the Nobbies in the far west to Cape Woolamai in the far east there is literally something for everyone, family’s, couples and singles alike!

But don’t take our word for it, taking a day trip to Phillip Island is a shining example of diversity and variety that we Melburnians love so much.

The road that leads into Phillip Island, (south gippsland highway) is used as a motorbike motorcade every year for the annual international MotoGP festival – famous international riders like Rossi come here to ride this world famous circuit.

Koalas find sanctuary and safety in the dedicated natural reserve, which is ideally located close to the Chocolate factory.

Where is Phillip Island

A short day trip from Melbourne just two hours from Melbourne CBD via the South Gippsland Highway due south you will wind your way down the western part of Gippsland passing Corinella and Grantville, eventually draining into San Remo on the eastern side of Phillip island.

The original custodians of what we now call Phillip Island are the Bunurong people of the Kulin nation. In Boonwurrung language it’s also known as Corriong or Millowl, of which the Indigenous people have a deep and spiritual connection to the land.

The Island itself is isolated from the mainland and joined by the Phillip island bridge between the two.

The islands population throughout the year is very low, however the summer months change this, increasing the number of people by around 300%

How to get to Phillip Island

From Melbourne by car

From the city take the Monash Freeway (M1) outbound towards Warragul, and merge onto the South Gippsland Freeway (left) towards Koo Wee Rup.

Continue right along the South Gippsland Freeway following the road along the Bass Coast highway towards Phillip Island and this takes you right into the Island. 

Coming from the Mornington Peninsula then you can also opt to take the ferry from Stony Point towards Phillip Island which runs 4-6 times daily at the time of writing.

There are also options to leave Stony Point for French Island if you so wish either on your way through or on return. The Western Port Ferries do not operate all weather ferries so make sure you check the weather forecast and ferry timetable before booking as all are subject to change. 

By car – From the Mornington Peninsula

Going by car to the Island from the Peninsula then find your way from the Mornington Peninsula freeway (M11) and exiting left onto Baxter-Tooradin Road, turning right at the roundabout onto South Gippsland Highway (M420)

The South Gippsland highway continues along the coast, make sure you follow the signs towards the Bass Coast Highway for 60km before reaching the San Remo to Phillip Island bridge. 

The road then turns into Phillip Island tourist road (B420).

There are a number of options to explore when visiting Phillip Island without your own hire car. We recommend any one of these day and overnight tours from Melbourne to Phillip Island to get the very best experience.

Best time of year to visit Phillip Island attractions

Generally speaking, the summer months from December till mid-March are always hotter on the island but that also comes with the crowds and more expensive accommodation – a general rule of thumb for nicer weather. 

However certain activities on Phillip Island like whale watching only run during the winter, cooler months – so it largely depends on what you’re looking to do on the island. 

We always visit in the summer months and stay in friend houses for a week or so and love the weather. We also find more stores are open in the summer and close for winter when it’s quieter. 

Where to stay on Phillip Island? 

If you’re looking for the best things to do on Phillip Island, then youll want to stay in some pretty amazing places jus to round it all off!

Stay a little further north on the island in Cowes for a much more affordable price, in the heart of the biggest city on the island not too far from Cowes front beach. You’re also super close to the Phillip Island coastal reserve and red rock beach.

Things to know before visiting Phillip Island

It is an Island and there is only one bridge in and out so plan in advance especially on public holidays and weekends as it can get a little crowded, particularly during the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix season.

Snakes are common throughout the island, particularly on walks along Cape Woolamai so make sure you wear protective footing.

The surf beaches are mostly safe, but rips and currents are an everyday presence so only surf within your limits and don’t push yourself.

The penguin parade.

If you’re wondering what to do in Phillip Island for a weekend then the penguin parade should be on the top of your list.

The Phillip island nature reserve was created by the State government of Victoria in the 1990’s and forms a part of the UNESCO western port biosphere that protects both wildlife and natural flora of the region.

In the deep south west of the island in the Summerland region, just before you reach the Nobbies Centre is Phillip Island’s Penguins parade viewpoint.

A dedicated underground and above ground viewing platform provides visitors a unique opportunity to see this 32,000 strong colony of Little Penguins, sometimes known as Fairy penguins march up the shore line to their burrows nestled in the sand on the dunes of the Summerlands.

How to get to the Phillip Island Penguin Parade

Take Back beach Road towards the Nobbies centre turning left at Ventnor road – the Penguin Parade info centre will be on the left hand side.

Cost: 

General admission for Adults are $27.25, Children $13.50 Underground tickets cost $75 and numbers are capped at 30 for this experience. You can also take a guided ranger tour of the penguin parade for $88.00

Opening hours:

The Visitor centre opens at 5pm and the Penguins generally arrive at sunset, hence you should arrive one hour prior to this. General ticket holders should arrive one hour prior as well, and underground visitors should arrive 30 minutes prior as space is less of an issue. 

Visit the Nobbies

Just past the Penguin Parade in the Summerlands is The Nobbies Centre, a collection of basalt formations and a rocky outcrop that overlooks The Nobbies itself on the far south western end of Phillip Island.

A long wooden boardwalk hugs the coastline of Bass strait that leads towards the Nobbies viewpoint. 

Seal Rocks sits roughly one kilometer out to sea and is home to Australia’s largest Fur Seal colony, but the real delight is finding the purpose built dens that the parks wildlife rangers have built into the side of the dunes for Little Penguins to rest and hatch their young during the breeding season.

The view from The Nobbies boardwalk is one of the best Phillip Island attractions for the whole family, giving you unprecedented views of Pyramid Rock, Cape Woolamai and Flinders.

Journey into Antarctica

The Nobbies Centre on Phillip Island has a cafe, a shop and a new virtual experience called the Antarctic Journey , providing a glimpse into one of the planet’s harshest natural environments. 

With a bunch of exhibitions, state of the art virtual reality programs and interactive displays, be transported back in time and walk the ice shelves with the Penguins of the Antarctic!

The displays focuses on showcasing the life of marine animals around Phillip Island’s natural marine environment and the journey they make from the Antarctic in seeking the warm Australian waters.

Ticket for the Antarctic journey are priced at $13.50 for adults and $6.75 for children 4-15 years old.

Hike Cape Woolamai

Not too many people venture to Phillip Island’s grasslands to do hiking, so if you’re looking for the perfect Phillip Island attraction to take incredible photos then you will want to do this hike!

The Cape Woolamai circuit is situated in the far south east of Phillip Island and one for the first towns you drive into across the bridge from San Remo.

Seeing Cape Woolamai beach is a must do during your travels to Phillip Island and is included in your Phillip Island full day tour from melbourne.

The hike is lined by Woolamai Surf beach to the south and takes roughly a half day to complete, as it will see you hike into Woolamai state reserve including Beacon lighthouse, Cape Woolamai beacon, Cowrie patch beach and Gull island lookout.

Personally speaking it’s one of our most favourite things to do when in Phillip island on a beautiful Summer’s morning or afternoon, depending on how far you intend on walking.

Either way, the hike begins at Cape Woolamai Surf life saving club car park where turn left heading along the sand towards The Pinnacles.

Half way down there is a large wooden staircase that leads up the beach and continues along the ridge of the cliffs with your first stop being The Pinnacles – 360 million year old rock formations that are the most beautiful natural feature of the Wooalami track; one of the most popular things to see on Phillip Island.

Either continue for the duration of the walk to Gull island and the Old Granite Quarry, or choose to turn around at the Pinnacles and head back to the life saving club.

The hike from the Beacon to Gull Island lookout will take approximately 10 minutes and is located on your right. Continue onwards for another 15-20 minutes until you reach Old Granite Quarry and Cleeland Bight Beach. 

If you make it as far as Cape Woolamai Beacon (just after the pinnacles) you’ll be afforded incredible views stretching out over the horizon of the southern ocean, with the Nobbies to your left, and San Remo behind you.

The hike in total covers 8km and takes around 2.5 hours to complete. 

Depending on your level of fitness you can opt for the shorter Pinnacles hike at 4.4km, or the Old Granite Quarry walk which is 5.6km. 

In total you will ascend a max altitude of 105m, not very high considering you get views across the Island but not the least impressive!

If you want to get a bit more intimate with the ocean and see the land from afar then there are boat tours of Cape Woolamai that might be the perfect option for you.

This once in a lifetime experience above the beautiful coastline of the southern ocean in a Helicopter flight is one of the most incredible things to do on Phillip Island.

Join a seal watching tour on Seal Rocks

If you’re game enough and love wildlife, heading out to Seal Rocks is the perfect way to spend a few hours, watching Australia’s largest colony of Fur Seals play, sun tan and frolic on the rocks and the cool waters of the southern ocean below. 

The seals find refuge here from their predators like Great White Sharks and Orcas, but they’re rarely seen right here.

Explore Forrest Cave

Formed by sea erosion over hundreds of years, the Forrest caves have been shaped into the cliffs and can only be accessed on low tide.

The Forrest caves are a fantastic place to get a glimpse of short tailed Shearwater birds.

Located just outside of Surf Beach and just after Phillip Island airport on Phillip Island road, the easiest access is by walking up the steps and turning left at the beach.

Learn to surf

Perfect for the novice surfer, this beach is renowned for its easy surfing conditions with one of Phillip Islands most established surf schools; Island Surf School .

Laura and I have previously had lessons from the instructors at Island surf school a few years back and loved our time learning not only about surfing itself, but how to read the water and the swell.

One of the best things to do on Phillip Island is an early wake up call to drive down Smiths Beach road at low tide and spend the better half of your morning on the water – you can even rent a surfboard and wetsuit from the friendly staff at Island Surf School as well. 

Cost: Soft board $40/day or $12.50/hour – Wetsuit $30/day or $10/hour

Walk around Cowes 

The largest of all the towns on Phillip Island is Cowes in the north of the island and by far the most populous town.

Whilst there aren’t too many things to do and see in Cowes it’s worth spending a few hours exploring and grabbing a bite to eat before heading off for coffee and gelato. 

For a delicious bite to eat we recommend Pino’s Trattoria . In operation since 1991 serving hoards of motorcycle fans during March for the annual MotoGP festival, head a little further down the street towards Cowes beach and pop into Isola Gelateria for a delicious italian gelato.

Find Whales from Pyramid Rock

Few things bring us more joy than seeing wildlife in their natural habitat and Pyramid Rock is just the place to do so.

As it’s so named, Pyramid Rock is indeed shaped like a Pyramid and sits on a rocky outcrop at the end of Pyramid Rocky road just south of the Phillip Island Grand prix circuit

The winter months of June through to October play host to migratory pods of both southern right whales and humpback whales as they make their way from Antarctica into warmer waters to give birth and raise their young and can be seen from the viewpoint. 

Splashing, breaching and tail slapping makes for the perfect day for these giant creatures and should be high on your list of Phillip island activities when you visit.

Southern right whales and humpbacks may not be Australia’s largest whales but seeing these beautiful creatures up close is a sight to behold.

Best to check the local council website to see when sightings become more and more frequent using  their self reporting service. 

Make sure when you’re down here to stop at the Bass Coast Whale discovery Trail sign, as it’s also a great vantage point for spotting whales.

Get up close and personal with our furry friends at Phillip Island’s Koala Conservation Centre in Rhyll.

One of the top things to do in Phillip Island is by paying a visit to this dedicated Koala Reserve aimed at koala conservation & protecting the Koala species whilst providing guests with a unique opportunity to see Koala’s through an eco-friendly experience across 6 hectares of natural Aussie bushland.

You’ll be able to get up close with our iconic native marsupials who are very accustomed to human interaction.

There are two tree-top boardwalks over 800m and 600m long respectively that take under an hour to complete that give you intimate access to not only Koalas walking along the trees and branches, but other native Australian wildlife such as Wallabies, Echidnas and birds like Eastern yellow robins and Cockatoos.

Whilst the list above is by no means an exhaustive list we firmly believe having done all of these ourselves these are the best things you can do whilst on Phillip island.

As an added bonus if you find yourself needing to explore more and you have a bit more time on your hands then these attractions below should fill your cup just right.

Churchill Island

Sightseeing on Phillip island doesn’t have to stop on the coast, in fact you’ll have to cross the ocean to get to Churchill Island.

The Churchill Island heritage farm is completely separated from Phillip Island that is only accessible via a single lane wooden bridge across Western Port Bay.

To give you an idea of what to expect, picture being greeted by Cape Barren geese everywhere blocking the road ahead, driving past green pastures of Highland cows – the type that have become famous on Instagram.

The heritage listed buildings and farm house on site make this the place of the first European garden in Victoria and make customers step back in time to a bygone era.

Take a guided tour through the historic farm and restored cottages dating back to the 1860’s and a homestead from 1872.

Explore the Churchill Island cafe and have a vegetarian or vegan cake with a delish coffee, whilst enjoying the picturesque views or walk around the 50 hectare island.

Phillip Island chocolate factory

The perfect entry or exit strategy for the island should include a stop at the Phillip island chocolate factory.

Receive a complimentary chocolate on admission to the shops and be greeted with the widest selection of hand crafted chocolate anywhere in the state. 

Panny’s world of chocolate celebrates all things chocolate with fun, interactive machines to try. You might even be lucky to experience chocolate making yourself!

Afterwards head into Panny’s chocolate cafe and chocolate retail shop and purchase a selection of truffles, gift boxes and so much more!

Make sure to spend roughly 45 minutes to an hour or so to really get the full experience of the Chocolate Factory.

Grand Prix circuit track

Most notably, the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit holds the annual MotoGP, where international motorbike riders from all over the world including names like Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez come to compete on the world stage.

You also have the unique opportunity to drive on the circuit yourself in one of the many driving opportunities with an experienced guide right here.

The Grand Prix circuit visitor centre and go-karting is your chance to experience what it feels like to drive on an iconic racing track in the heart of Phillip Island, with go karting bookings available daily from 9am till 5pm, and range anywhere from $8.00 to $80.00 

During March every year this place gets very busy so if you’re not interested in the traffic be sure to avoid Back Beach road in the morning.

The go-karting track offer package deals, for example 1×10 minute sessions for $35, 2×10 minute sessions for $60, or 3x 10 minute sessions for $80.

Watch the Pelican Feeding in San Remo

An occurrence steeped in tradition, the staff of Fishermans co-op in San Remo ritually feed an enormous group of Pelicans that come to the shores at noon hour every day and take the fresh seafood brought in from fisherman.

It attracts crowds far and wide and the staff of San Remo’s Fishermans co-op give a brief explanation into the tradition and provide listeners with invaluable information and the ability to get up close and personal with the Pelicans!

Best places to eat on Phillip Island

Waterboy in Cowes

This newly renovated, high cieling touch of Melbourne-esk cafe is the perfect place to grab yourself a coffee on the go, or sit and enjoy an eggs benny with mushrooms before an Oat milk latte.

Porter fresh Poke bowls in San Remo

If macrames, eclectic artwork and hanging plants are your thing then you need to visit the former Porter Republic turned Porter fresh poke bowls down in San Remo.

These guys do excellent customer service, healthy vegan poke bowls filled with crispy fried tofu, eggs benny and zucchini corn fritters and a taste of Melbourne style coffee right in the heart of San Remo.

Visit The Store

This cute little hipster store is located right off the main road in Ventnor and is owned and operated by local Siann since 2019 and is not only a fantastic place to eat but one of the best things to do on Phillip Island.  

Your one stop shop for local island produce, veggies, floristry, quality coffee, sourdough, cheeses, keep cups, shoes, hats and an all round friendly atmosphere both inside and a tabled garden patio area outside.

Siann stocks a great range of zero-waste products from soap bars to deodorizers, reusable straws and makes for the perfect place to spend an afternoon on the Island.

Phillip Island Winery

What happens when three groups of friends come together to create something incredible?

Phillip Island winery, that’s what. Aside from food, wine and cider, these guys even have their own cellar door on a beautiful garden property to their very own fresh, locally sourced produce on sale at ‘The Yards cellar door’.

If you can’t make it to the winery itself then they have their entire selection of all Australian wines like Rose, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio.

Opening hours: 12:00-5pm Thursday till Sunday (kitchen is open 1200 till 4pm) 

Dogs are allowed, complete with a four-legged menu option. Phillip Island Winery also hosts a range of functions including weddings, birthdays and bah-mitzvahs. 

Bookings: There’s over 5 hectares of land so if you don’t make a booking then you can always set up a picnic rug and sip wine on the lawn (our favourite thing to do)

3 day Phillip island itinerary

If you’re pressed for time and want to see the most you can in the limited travel days available to you then we’ve created a few options for you to help see the most out of the island.

Day 1 – Smiths Beach to Cowes 

Start the day off bright and early and head to the surf beach and grab yourself a longboard and hit the morning waves around 6am. 

After working up an appetite you’ll probably want to head into town and grab a delicious breakfast and a coffee from ‘The Store’ and pick yourself up an oat latte and an avo on toast for $12.

Soak up the sun on the tabled outdoor section and revitalise before heading off to your next stop in Cowes.

Stroll up and down main street Cowes window shopping, admire the Cypress trees on the drive down Thompson Avenue and take a stroll along Cowes beach down by the Jetty.

Day 2 – Hike Cape Woolamai and do some whale watching

Once again start the day off bright and early and make your way down to Cape Woolamai and hike along the 8.4 km track to the Old Granite quarry viewpoint, stopping at the Pinnacles along the way before looping back to the carpark.

Time to get off the land and into the water as you jump on a Whale watching tour or a seal watching tour whilst enjoying a refreshing cup of coffee in the calm waters of Bass Strait. 

Day 3- The Nobbies to Churchill Island

Bring a windbreaker jacket and explore the rocky coastline of the Nobbies Visitor Centre in the south-western part of the island and keep an eye out for australian animals above and below the water.

Experience what it was like for early European settlers to run this heritage listed farm and the gardens over on Churchill Island, taking time to feed the sheep and stop by the cafe before beginning your journey back into Melbourne.

Phillip Island is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Australia, especially if you want to see penguins. However, they only march onto the shores early evening. So what else can you see during the day to make the most of your trip? Especially if you’re driving 2 hours from Melbourne. 1. Penguin Parade

Let’s start with the most obvious reason to visit Philip Island. A great tourist attraction for couples and families, the Penguin Parade is world-famous! Watch in wonder as the Little Penguins return to shore at sunset after a big day out fishing in the ocean. Every night, they waddle across the sandy shores and into their burrows in the dunes. See the penguins from boardwalks and viewing platforms in their natural habitat. Or head underground for an eye-level view up close. It can get very cold at night so make sure you wear appropriate clothing. A range of tours are available if you want to get the most out of the experience.

2. Nobbie Centre

On the western tip of Phillip Island, you’ll find the Nobbies Centre at Point Grant with stunning views over the Bass Strait. Wander on the boardwalks outside and look out to Seal Rocks about one kilometer offshore. It’s very likely you’ll see wildlife since it’s home to over 16,000 fur seals. You’ll also see The Nobbies and The Blowhole. Along the boardwalk, there are a number of picturesque spots so take plenty of photos. At the main center, you’ll see the interactive Antarctic Journey and various exhibits about penguin conservation. There is also a cafe and gift shop, making it an ideal place for a lunch break.

3. Churchill Island Heritage Farm

Visit the site of the first farm in the state of Victoria at Churchill Island This restored homestead, dating back to the 1850s, has the original cottages onsite. Around the property, you’ll see stunning gardens and orchards, perfect for lunch picnics on sunny days. There are plenty of farm animals to see like Clydesdale horses and highland cattle. Activities during the day include milking cows, shearing sheep, and whip cracking. Or if you want to explore the surroundings, follow the walking trails that loop around the property. There is the North Point loop which is just 2 kilometres and will take around an hour. For a longer walk, go on the Chirchill Island loop which is 4.5 kilometres and takes around 2 hours.

4. Koala Conservation Reserve

See koalas up close in their natural habitat at the Koala Conservation Centre. The Australian bushland area is also home to an abundance of bird life, wallabies and echidnas. At the entrance, you’ll walk through the interpretive centre. This is where you can learn more about koalas including their history on Phillip Island. Outside the centre, enjoy two boardwalks and see the koalas in their natural habitat – eating, sleeping, and playing. Both boardwalks are easy 20-minute loops so take your time. Or, go behind the scenes with a ranger on a ‘Koala Eco-Explorer Tour’ – you never know what you’ll discover!

5. Maru Koala & Animal Park

Maru Koala & Animal Park is a great place to visit, especially if you have young kids. Besides seeing all kinds of Australian animals, there are opportunities to get closer. You can pat koalas, feed kangaroos, and even reptiles after talk shows. Other animals you’ll see include crocodiles, possums, Tasmanian Devils, dingoes, and wombats. Check the times for keeper talks so you can learn more about your favourite Aussie animals. Cap off a fun day with 18 holes at Pirate Pete’s Mini Golf. There’s also a Homestead Bistro if you want to have lunch at the park.

6. Phillip Island Wildlife Park

If you want to enjoy a relaxing day with Australian animals, the Phillip Island Wildlife Park is a good stop. It’s located just two kilometres from the island’s main township, Cowes. Set over more than sixty acres, you’ll see a number of native animals. Visitors can feed and pat kangaroos in their free-range enclosure, from large red kangaroos to small wallabies. View the koalas at eye level, right up close, on the raised boardwalk. In the trees, you’ll see a range of birds including owls, parrots, and cockatoos.

Visit the factory shop where you can browse through the whole range of delicious handmade Belgian chocolate goodies. Alternatively, sit at the cafe and relax while the kids roam around the factory. 10. Phillip Island Winery

Be sure to stop by this family-owned vineyard to taste their award-winning wines including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They also have Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rose, Shiraz, and sparkling wines. Drop by for lunch and try cheese platters which match perfectly with the wines. Enjoy your wines indoors or perhaps take a seat in the courtyard and enjoy the outdoors. You’ll love the views over Bass Strait and Berry’s Beach. 11. Cape Woolamai

One of the most popular surf beaches in the state, Cape Woolamai is set against a brilliant pink granite backdrop. In fact, it’s the highest point on the island. Take a wander along the sandy shores or follow a walking track to the viewing platforms. Along the way, you’ll have the most stunning scenic vistas. Walking trails include the Pinnacles Walk, Old Granite Quarry, and Cape Woolamai Beacon. The complete walks range from 4 to 7 kilometers.

12. National Vietnam Veterans Museum

A volunteer-run museum, the National Vietnam Veterans Museum honours those who served during Australia’s longest war. It covers the experiences of veterans, as well as the impact of the Vietnam War on our society over the years. The museum is home to quite a collection of artifacts from the war and veterans. This includes helicopters, a tank, a bomber, and smaller items such as boots and a helicopter pilot’s helmet. The themed exhibitions are regularly updated for an educational, rewarding, and sometimes emotional visit. Don’t miss the Light & Sound show, as it helps gain a further understanding of the war and its impacts.

13. Phillip Island Grand Prix

An iconic motor racing venue, visitors can see it from the track or take a tour. For an adrenalin rush, do a few laps on the go-karts. Or you can even do a “Hot Lap” where an experienced racing driver takes you around the course. But if you’re just there to enjoy the scenery, check out the historical displays on a guided tour. There’s also “Champion’s Cafe” so you can enjoy a lunch break before exploring the rest of Phillip Island. Keep in mind, that there are events during the year for major races.

Best Time To Visit Phillip Island

If you’re visiting Philip Island, the best time to go is November through March. These are the warmer months, and it’s the best time to experience everything Philip Island has to offer. But it’s the peak period for the Penguin Parade, and you might end up fighting the crowds. School holidays are generally from the second half of December through to the end of January. A good time to view the Penguin Parade is late autumn or early spring. The weather is not too cold, and the sun sets earlier, so it’s not a late night for the kids. Plus, less crowded boardwalks and viewing platforms make for a more enjoyable experience.

How Many Days to Spend in Phillip Island

It’s common for many visitors to come here on a day trip. A typical itinerary could be a fun day at A Maze ’N Things , Churchill Island Heritage Farm , or one of the wildlife parks. Then head to Nobbie Center in the late afternoon, before heading to the Penguin Parade at night. If you want to make the most of your time there, three to four days should be enough to experience Phillip Island . You can swim at Red Rocks Beach or hike the trails at Cape Woolamai. Be sure to spend a day in Cowes, enjoying a variety of food and drink at the beachfront bars and restaurants.

How to Get to Phillip Island

Phillip Island is about 1 hour and 50 minutes drive from Melbourne. For most locals, this is a fun day trip, particularly on weekends. If you’re a first-time visitor to Melbourne, renting a car is a good option so you can enjoy a flexible itinerary. However, it might be easier and more relaxing to join a bus tour. Road rules and conditions are slightly different in Melbourne compared to the rest of Australia. Particularly when you’re driving out from the CBD and have to turn right! At some intersections, you have to do a hook turn from the left lane. A number of bus tours depart around midday, as they aim to stop by Penguin Parade at night. A n island getaway that's big on activities, with something for surfers, sand-castle builders, walkers and nature lovers. There's impeccably designed cabins to stay in, and providores and cellar doors to match the mainland.

Phillip Island is just under a two-hour drive from Melbourne, and yet it's a world away. It feels like regional Australia , with access to pristine beaches and extraordinary wildlife. Those looking for some peace and quiet should avoid arriving during the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, when fans descend on the island to see the world's best riders tackle one of the world's most difficult circuits.

There are koalas, seal colonies, birds and penguins, which you can meet in their natural habits without disrupting them. Or if kids want a little more "epic" than "wild", take them go-karting on the replica Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

If you watched The Block this year, you may have seen the contestants visit Phillip Island to complete a challenge, that saw Steph and Gian win a hotlap of the famous racetrack. Cape Cabin is an original mud brick and timber A-frame home set in a quiet residential pocked of a wild and rugged nature reserve. Meander down a short path to a beach, or take in the views overlooking Bass Strait and Cape Woolamai Nature Reserve. The house itself has a handcrafted character and there is a carefully curated mix of old and new that gives it a sense of space and cosiness. The George Bass Coastal Walk

Walk the clifftop path along and overlooking the Bass Strait surf and stretches of secluded beaches. This popular walk traces the coast from the outskirts of San Remo at Punchbowl to the Bass Highway, near the hall at Peppermint Road in Kilcunda. This 7-kilometre walk suits most ages and fitness levels, and there's some beautiful bushwalking involved. There's some loose surface and a few steps.

Cape Woolamai Surf break

Catch a wave against the backdrop of ancient pink granite at Cape Woolamai. This is Phillip Island's highest point and one of Victoria's most well-regarded surfing beaches. The region was recently labelled a National Surfing Reserve in recognition of its rich surfing heritage and pristine natural environment. Follow one of the four coastal walking track loops at Cape Woolamai and stop at viewing platforms to take in breathtaking views of the Pinnacles.

Seal Rocks, Australia's largest seal colony

Some 35,000 seals make their home off the coast of Phillip Island at Seal Rocks, Australia's largest fur seal colony. Venture out on a boat cruise with Wild Oceans Eco Boat Adventures or Wildlife Coast Cruises to see the seals fish from the rocks, taking in the rugged coastline along the way.

Koalas and birds

Visit the Koala Conservation Centre and follow the woodland boardwalks to see Australia's cuddliest native dozing in the trees. Twitchers can visit the island in spring to see shearwater birds arrive from Alaska to breed.

Phillip Island Penguin Parade

Every night all year long, the world's most adorable invasion takes place on the shores of Phillip Island. As the sun goes down, hundreds (often thousands) of Little Penguins return to their beach burrows after days — sometimes even weeks — out at sea. Sure, finding penguins without the crowds and the infrastructure of a tourism board sounds great, but it's not so great for the penguins to have strangers trudge around their hiding places with no one to rein them in. The Phillip Island Nature Parks' Penguin Parade gives you access to boardwalks after dark, and you can see these penguins greet neighbours, partners and their chicks up close. Watch penguins dash home across the sand at dusk, while knowing that your visit help conserve their native habitat. Bonus: it's suitable for guests with wheelchairs.

Where to eat and drink on Phillip Island

Although surrounded by water, Phillip Island isn't a tropical isle where you sip coconuts under palm trees. It's wild, rugged and full of cosy eateries and bars. It's a place to meandering and stopping by, dropping in and picking up a bottle of local wine to take with you.

Kelp Bar + Eatery

Serving everything from beer battered rockling and pico de gallo tacos to local beef burgers, Kelp is a popular pit stop on Phillip Island. Located right by the bridge connecting Newhaven and San Remo, the charming bar and eatery has a rustic interior inspired by the surrounding seaside.

The Store, Phillip Island

In Ventnor, visit the so-quaint The Store, a one-stop shop for locally sourced gourmet staples, quality coffee, fresh sourdough and the likes of toasties, fresh flowers and plants. This place, with its little outdoor dining area and chic finds, has a Byron Bay vibe , without the chaos of the crowds.

Phillip Island Winery

Also in Ventnor is the 14-acre Phillip Island Winery, where you can stop for a grazing board at the cellar door and shop their beautiful homewares. Phillip Island Winery is located just minutes from the Penguin Parade and is open five days a week.

Three places to holiday by train from Melbourne

If you're planning a weekend getaway near Melbourne soon, why not leave the car at home?

For starters, you can enjoy a more relaxed journey without having to be behind the wheel — and with fuel prices the way they are, you might end up saving money, too.

Whether you're looking for a day trip, or a night or two away, we spoke to train enthusiast Marcus Wong to find out three of the best train holidays near Melbourne.

Art and history in Castlemaine and the Goldfields

Castlemaine was once a bustling gold-rush town. These days, it's known for its vibrant art scene and cafe culture.

Located in Victoria's Goldfields region, Castlemaine's rich history can be seen in the old buildings in town which date back to the mid-19th century.

A popular spot for Melburnians looking for a tree change, Castlemaine is sometimes referred to in the big smoke as "north Northcote".

Getting there

Castlemaine is about 90 minutes by train from Melbourne. You can jump on the V/Line service to Bendigo, which runs regularly from Southern Cross Station.

Off-peak fares are available on weekends and when departing Melbourne before 4:00pm or after 6:00pm on weekdays.

A one-way off-peak trip to Castlemaine costs $17.64 for adults and $8.82 for travellers with a concession. If you're a parent of young children, keep in mind children under five travel free on V/Line trains .

Getting around

The train station is close to many of Castlemaine's attractions. It's about a 10 minute walk to the Castlemaine Art Museum and cafes and restaurants on Barker Street.

If you're in the mood for walking, there are guided tours available on Saturday afternoons .

Mount Alexander Shire runs a bus service in Castlemaine  and there are taxis available too.

Where to stay

There are plenty of short-stay accommodation options in Castlemaine and surrounds, including bed and breakfasts, hotels, and self-contained apartments.

Penguins, seals and surf at Phillip Island

Phillip Island is a well-known holiday spot for Melburnians, but many wouldn't know it's accessible by train.

You'll need to jump on a train to Frankston, and then switch to the Stony Point line. Once you arrive at Stony Point, you can catch the ferry to the island.

"Once you get to Stony Point, the pier is right there. That's where the ferry departs from," Mr Wong says.

At sunset on the island, you can camp out to see the famous penguin parade , which draws tourists from all over the world.

If you keep your eyes out, you might also spot migratory birds , seals and even whales swimming nearby.

This is the longest trip of the three and it's too far for a single-day trip.

The trip to Stony Point will take about two hours from Southern Cross Station.

From there, you can catch the ferry, which takes another 30 minutes.  Be sure to check the ferry timetable , because there are only four services running each day

The ferry costs $13.50 each way for adults , but there are cheaper fares available for concession card holders and children. The train trip will set you back about $4.60 each way, and $2.30 for a concession card holder.

There is a bus service on the island and you can also book taxis.

There are plenty of accommodation options near the ferry terminal in Cowes, the island's main town.

The penguin parade is on the other side of the island, which is not serviced by bus or train. If you're keen to see the penguins, and you don't have a car, you'll need to book a taxi or arrange other transport from Cowes . 

Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula

Geelong is Victoria's second-largest city, and it's very accessible from Melbourne via train.

"If you get off at Geelong station itself, you can walk over to the waterfront," Mr Wong says.

"It's not a surf beach or anything, but it's a nice place to go for a walk and have lunch on a sunny day."

During the warmer months, Geelong's Eastern Beach is a great spot for a swim. There's a large park with barbecues and a playground to keep children entertained.

The trip from Southern Cross station to Geelong station on the V/Line takes just over an hour.

Again, if you're travelling on weekends or depart Melbourne before 4:00pm and after 6:00pm on a weekday, you can use an off-peak fare. The fare will cost $9.66 for an adult, or $4.83 for a concession fare. Travelling during peak periods is more expensive.

There are hotels and other accommodation options close to Geelong station.

The Bellarine Peninsula is home to several popular beach towns, including Torquay and Barwon Heads, which have plenty of holiday accommodation options and are accessible from Geelong or Marshall Station via bus.

Helping More Tourism Infrastructure Projects Take Off

The Allan Labor Government is making sure Victorian tourism operators have the support they need to build and upgrade infrastructure projects, with new grants to ensure operators can thrive for generations to come.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos today visited Penguin Parade at Phillip Island to open applications for a new round of the Regional Tourism Investment Fund .

The Fund provides grants of up to $5 million for small and large-scale projects and accommodation improvement projects, with the Labor Government’s investment of up to $62 million creating more jobs and a strong pipeline of demand-driven tourism infrastructure projects across the state.

Phillip Island Nature Parks is one of Australia’s most popular wildlife attractions with more than 900,000 visitors a year – and works are underway on the iconic Penguin Parade, thanks to a $5 million upgrade through a previous round of the Fund.

A new accessible boardwalk with penguin viewing stands and additional seating will improve the visitor experience, ensuring more people from across Victoria and interstate can enjoy this tourist attraction for years to come.

The works will also protect the penguins’ habitat by reducing erosion from visitors walking in the area, minimising the impact of visitors on the species.

Grants between $100,000 and $5 million are open to tourism businesses, not-for-profit and Traditional Owner organisations.

The grants will be delivered in three streams – between $100,000 and $1 million for small-scale projects, grants between $1 million and $5 million for large scale projects, and grants between $500,000 and $2 million for accommodation improvement projects.

The Fund is guided by the five priorities identified in the Experience Victoria 2033 strategic plan – First People’s led experiences, wellness, arts and culture, food and drink, and nature.
