DESCRIPTION

Fish like a local.

Ice fishing has been   part of local culture   in the Far North for centuries. Traditionnally it was one of the rare ways to get food in wintertime when the conditions are the roughest. After being collected from your hotel, your guide will drive you to some   good fishing spots outside Rovaniemi . No need to drive far when you know where to go!

You will be shown the basics of ice-fishing,   how to drill your hole in the ice , and the different techniques to catch a fish. If you are lucky and get a good catch, your guide will even show you how to prepare it.

ICE FISHING EXPERIENCE WITH SNACKS AROUND THE FIRE

This tour offers a longer experience in the morning to enjoy the silence and peacefulness of Lapland nature farther away from Rovaniemi city. The fishing time is approximately 2h. Typical Finnish snacks and hot drinks are served around an open fire. If you catch a fish of a decent size, your guide can prepare it and add it to the menu!

Although we provide you with thermal outer clothes, it greatly enhances your experience if you dress correctly before you arrive!

So our tips are very simple:

– Layer up, but not too tightly

– Wear tight thermals and on top of that wool or fleece clothes

– Thin finger gloves and wool socks are a worthwhile investment for any trip to Lapland, but remember no cotton

– A pair of winter trousers and jacket can be worn under the overalls when it is very cold outside

- Can i drink alcohol before or during tours?

Before and during activities on the multi-day and/or snowmobile tours consumption of alcohol is prohibited. If we suspect that a participant is intoxicated, we will prohibit them from joining the activity.

Please note that Finnish law prohibits driving a snowmobile under the influence of alcohol or any narcotic product. As responsible tour operators, we reserve the right to change the route and duration of the tour if deemed advisable for the sake of safety and comfort of the participants. We also reserve the right to discontinue the tour if a participant is seen as a potential danger to him/herself or to others, or is in poor health.

Voyage à Rovaniemi en laponie

Ice fishing on Kemijoki

Ice fishing in Rovaniemi

Content of  article:.

In that article, you will find prices comparison of ice fishing safaris in Rovaniemi as well as recommendations on how to dress on the day you go. We will also list all the gears that you will need if you want to go by yourself and their translation into Finnish language.

Introduction:

One of the picture we all have in our mind when we come to Lapland is people sitting on frozen laked and rivers and fishing through the ice. But how to prepare and how much does it really cost?

Without knowing much about it, everyone want to try it . Drilling through this ice and staring at this little hole hopping to catch whatever might be living under those layers of deep snow, ice and water …

1) How to dress for ice fishing

First of all, let answer to that question which is  crucial when you go for such activity. Moreover, it is basically the question that you should ask yourself for any outdoor activities when you come for holidays in Finnish Lapland. Depending on the temperature on the day you go fishing, you should put really warm clothes as you will mostly be seating and it can sometimes be really cold.

What to wear list:

  • Thick socks,
  • Warm boots with enough room to wiggle your toes,
  • Thermal long underwear,
  • Good winter pant and jacket,
  • Good gloves and warm winter hat.

2) Fishing gears

Whether you go ice fishing on your own or with a guided tour, it is useful things to know. In the hereunder table, you fill find the list of ice fishing gears with both English and Finnish names.

[table id=4 /]

Good to know:

In Finland, you don’t need fishing license for ice fishing if you use only one fishing rod. For more information about all fishing licences in Finlande, click here.

Apart from these equipments, it is of course very useful to have a good knife when you go fishing. This  can be useful in many kind of situation such as cutting a line, killing a fish,  or even carving a wooden stick. Indeed, a fishing expedition usually give you the chance of grilling some sausages on the fire. If you are interested in buying typical Finnish knives, I invite you to read this article where I give you a tip to buy  Marttiini knives at a reduced price.

3) Prices of ice fishing safaris – 2018

Spending your vacation in Finnish Lapland is something unique. But who really wants to waste a day going around the safari companies to find the more suitable? In the following table, you will find information about different ice fishing safari options proposed by local companies. You will then find all specificities at one glance:   prices, durations, transportation and extra. Check out their websites for more details about provided services.

[table id=2 /]

4) Ice fishing season duration

In northern Finland, the snow season begins in November. However, ice fishing is not an activity that you can practice too early. In fact,  even if the thermometer shows temperatures below zero, people have to wait before stepping a foot on a frozen lake or river. Indeed, it takes some time before the ice sheet get thick  enough that one can go safely walk on the ice. Therefore, the ice fishing season with safari companies in Lapland usualy starts in December and last until April depending of the year.

But what is the best time?

To keep good memories, any time will be suitable as it is really a great experience. However, locals usually wait for the end of January or even February. to enjoy more sunny days. This will for sure allow you to stay longer outside and it will also make fishes more active.

Reindeer Sleigh Ride to Ice Fishing

Try local winter fishing and a typical way of spending free time in rovaniemi, finnish lapland.

Our ice fishing excursions are a great chance to learn why we still value our personal space beyond reasonable measures in Lapland, where we have more reindeer than people.

You can choose if you go to the lake by snowmobile, reindeer sleigh, or foot – all these are used by the locals too. Well, the reindeer sleigh is not the most typical transportation nowadays, but it used to be the only one back in the day.

The first thing is to find the best spot on the frozen lake. Then it’s time to drill the hole into the thick ice cover with a special ice drill and prepare the fishing equipment. After all these preparations, you can try your luck at catching the fish. The catch is not the main point, though. The most important thing is having a great time outdoors with nice people.

All our activities launch from Apukka Resort, situated at Tutkijantie 28, 96900 Rovaniemi, and unfold within exclusive private lands.

The beauty of ice-fishing and why Russians can’t get enough of it (PHOTOS)

On December 28, 2020, 45 men from different parts of Russia, all armed with fishing gear, went out on the iced-up Kotovsky reservoir in Tambov Region (418 km from Moscow). Every couple of meters you could see ice-drilling tools and under each waterproof hood was a nose reddened from the cold. Nobody uses chum and bait these days — it is now prohibited, and only perch and pike at least 32cm long are considered worth catching.

“It’s not simply a case of drilling a hole, you have to tease the fish with jerking movements,” a reporter for Vesti.Tambov TV commented on the winter fishing competition that takes place annually in different regions of Russia.

The event is important for Russians who fish competitively. But, back in the day, Soviet men gladly fished on the ice purely for recreational purposes.

“Several times a year, from the 1960s till 1995, my father, Valentin Kozlov, went fishing in northern Russia in winter and sometimes he took me with him. Everything we brought back, we salted and dried. We were glad to catch anything, large or small. It was my favorite tradition,” recalls Olga, a resident of Moscow Region.

As she says, winter fishing was always a good excuse to drink, either during or after. It was difficult to sit for 5-7 hours on the ice, even in warm clothing.

Many avid anglers inherited the hobby from their fathers, says Yuri Mosolov, a 74-year-old resident of Moscow and an experienced fisherman himself.

“Everything started for me 69 years ago, when my parents took me to my grandfather’s village on the Volga for the summer holidays and everyone there was a fisherman. From first grade, they began taking me ice-fishing with them. Like it or not, it gets in your blood,” muses Mosolov.

In Russia, there are no major restrictions on fishing, with the exception of areas given over to fish farming. Therefore, every year, anglers go out on the ice anywhere in Russia where there is frozen water.

For fisherman Artem Vorovin from Kaliningrad Region, winter fishing is a key source of adrenaline:

“Fishing with an ice jig and getting the wires right requires talent, you get a real adrenaline rush from it. Plus, I love white snow, clear frosty air and real contact with nature. That’s the main thing, the rest is secondary,” says Vorovin.

Russian writer Vasily Avchenko, in his book ‘Crystal in a Transparent Frame: Tales of Water and Rocks’, describes his love of ice-fishing thus:

“It [love of fishing] demonstrates an unseen but solid connection with something vast and not entirely cognizable: nature? space? God? A connection that to me, a city boy, was not obvious for a long time. Now I know for sure what it is. Fishing is pretty much the only thing that connects me, who lives by illusions and conventions, with what’s real.”
