Fall on the Oregon Coast

This article may contain referral links. Read our DISCLOSURE

Have you considered an Oregon Coast fall trip? I know what you’re thinking—why visit in the fall ? The water’s too cold in Oregon for swimming—actually it’s too cold and rough most of the year for swimming. And it will be rainy, right?

I had the same thoughts about visiting the Oregon Coast in October when Alan suggested one. But we were desperate to escape the smoke from forest fires that had been lingering over Montana’s Bitterroot Valley since mid July.

After a week of last-minute planning, we were on our way to one of the most delightful boomer trips of the year. Since then, we’ve enjoyed several fall trips to the central Oregon coast.

September and October are wonderful months for visiting the coast of Oregon. The weather is usually sunny and mild, although rainy periods move in toward the end of October.

I’m sharing our original road trip experience plus other Oregon coast adventures we’ve experienced in the last several years. Alan and I aren’t done exploring Oregon , yet!

Table of Contents

Where to stay on an Oregon Coast fall trip

A sunset pinks the sky a pinky beige, reflecting into the water on an Oregon Coast fall trip.

When planning our first visit, we discovered that Oregon coast hotels , vacation rentals and bed and breakfasts get booked up early for the summer and into fall. Of course this makes finding a last-minute place to stay challenging.

After days browsing the online listings at VRBO , Alan finally found a vacation home in the Bayshore community north of Waldport on Oregon’s central coast. Staying in a vacation rental is our first choice for a coastal visit.

But the rental wasn’t available as early as we wanted—we were really desperate to get away from the oppressive smoke. So Ocean House Bed and Breakfast in Newport, Oregon, became our home for the first three nights of this boomer travel adventure .

Boomer Travel Tip

We use the Benchmark Oregon Road & Recreation Atlas to plan our Oregon road trips.

Where to eat in Newport on an Oregon fall vacation

Fish layered over poblano peppers at Local Oceans Seafood in Newport, Oregon

This trip introduced us to restaurants that will become favorites as Alan and I continue to visit the central Oregon Coast. Yes, we’ve designated this area of Oregon as our new last-minute escape when we need a break from exploring Montana .

Hummus, vegetables and clam chowder served in a wooden tray.

In Newport, Taphouse at Nye Creek provided a sunny deck for lunch that included Oregon crafted beer. We also enjoyed a late lunch/early dinner at Local Ocean Seafood followed by sea lion watching in the Newport Harbor. I’ll be returning to Local Ocean for the seasonal special of grilled halibut and peaches. Yum!

Since first writing this article, we’ve added new restaurant favorites in Newport:

  • Clearwater Restaurant , also on the Bayfront
  • Nye Beach Café at historic Nye Beach
  • Georgie’s Beachside Grill overlooking Nye Beach
  • Azul is our go to Mexican restaurant. You’ll find it in Waldport.

Continue down the Oregon Coast for more good food

In the Bayshore community near Waldport, we met a couple from Helena, MT —can you believe that? They introduced us to excellent Mexican food at Fresco Mexican Food in Waldport. If you go, I recommend the chicken molé. We’ve since discovered Azul Mexican Restaurant which has become our new favorite.

And we enjoyed breakfast at Hilltop Café-Bistro , also in Waldport.

A lunch at Luna Sea Fish House was our first introduction to the charming seaside village of Yachats. The drive was so pleasant that Alan and I returned to Yachats and the Drift Inn & Cafe  for dinner and breakfast.

If there’s a long wait for dinner at Drift Inn, ask if you can sit at the bar. We were seated immediately, enjoying a fun dinner accompanied by an education in cocktail making from the bartender.

Luna Fish House now has a second location in Seal Rock , which is closer to Newport.

What to do on the central Oregon Coast

You won’t be bored on a trip to the coast. Take your pick: beachwalks, coastal range hikes, scenic drives, lighthouse exploring and covered bridge searches are just a few of our favorite things to do on the Oregon Coast.

Walk the many beaches

Grasses cover sand dunes in front of the blue Pacific Ocean.

Since this was a smoke escape, the goal of this Oregon Coast fall trip was mostly to breathe fresh air on long beach walks. And we found plenty of beautiful beaches and wayside parks between Newport and Yachats to do just that.

The beach at the Bayshore Community in Waldport was our main beachwalking site. After a short path over the dunes, Alan and I enjoyed a flat beach that went on for miles. South Beach State Park , near Newport, offers another expansive beach for walking and beachcombing.

wide expanse of beach with stormy clouds overhead

Small state park beaches are located all along Highway 101. Ona Beach, part of the Brian Booth State Park complex, has become another of our favorite beaches to walk.

Located almost halfway between Waldport and Newport, this state park offers a large parking lot and restrooms. Those looking to spend the day will appreciate the shady picnic grounds with tables.

Explore Cape Perpetua

Ocean waves wash up onto black sand beaches bordered by a mountain headland.

At Cape Perpetua Secnic Area , a unit in the Siuslaw National Forest, hike in a coastal range forest or on trails above the beaches, photograph the Devil’s Churn or explore tidepools. Cape Perpetua deserves an article dedicated to all there is to see and do. I promise, one is coming.

Visit the Central Coast lighthouses

Yaquina Lighthouse stands on the headland at Newport, Oregon.

On our first trip, Alan and I enjoyed the hike to Yaquina Head Lighthouse that was accessible directly from Ocean Head Bed and Breakfast. Although we didn’t pay to explore inside the lighthouse that dates from 1873, whales provided a free show in a nearby bay.

Tidepool exploring at Yaquina Head is another fun activity. It’s on the list for next time.

Although we didn’t explore Heceta Head Lighthouse on this visit, we drove past it’s Cape Perpetua location south of Yachats. There’s a darling bed and breakfast located in the former lightkeepers house. A stay at Heceta Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast is definitely on our to do list.

There are eleven lighthouses on the entire Oregon Coast. Hmm, that sounds like a wonderful theme for the next road trip.

Take a hike in the coastal range

forest trail between big trees

Harris Ranch Trail was our introduction to coastal range hikes. Getting to the Harris Ranch Trailhead in the Drift Creek Wilderness proved to be quite the adventure. We turned onto a forest road east of Waldport that wound around and around until finally reaching the trailhead.

I can’t describe the quiet beauty of standing among Sitka spruce and western hemlock in the largest rainforest stand of old growth in the Oregon coastal range. Although we didn’t hike far, it was worth the drive.

Hiking is a wonderful way to experience Oregon in the fall. And there are plenty of trails to choose from. Alan and I have barely scratched the surface.  Drift Creek Falls Trail near Lincoln City is on our list for next time.

Search for covered bridges on an Oregon scenic drive

A white covered bridge surrounded by green trees in Oregon.

On a fall trip to coastal Oregon, try a scenic drive in the mountains when it’s too windy to enjoy the beach or when the marine layer has moved onto shore. That’s what we do!

You’ll find 50 covered bridges in the state of Oregon. It’s the largest concentration of covered bridges in the West. And I’m determined to visit every one of them.

Of course I’ll write about it so that you can enjoy them, too. Stay tuned!.

There’s so much to see and do on the Oregon Coast. Check back as I add more tips for your Oregon Coast fall adventure.

Fans may recognize Astoria as the setting of "The Goonies," and you'll find several iconic film sites in town, such as the original Goonies house and the Oregon Film Museum, which was featured in the opening scene. But beyond its film history (more than a dozen movies have been filmed here), Astoria holds rich heritage. Its location on the Columbia River near the Pacific Ocean made it a prime fur trading post in the 1800's, and many of Astoria's attractions are dedicated to maritime history. Today, visitors can take in the town's Victorian houses, climb the 125-foot Astoria Column or dine at local breweries and bistros.

Florence appeals to travelers keen on spending their next vacation outdoors. Visitors can explore Sea Lion Caves, the largest sea cave in the country, ride horses on the beach, fish on the area's many lakes and play golf on a coastal course. Don't forget to save time for visiting the Heceta Head Lighthouse and Historic Old Town Florence, where you'll find shops, art galleries and the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum.

With 4,300-plus skiable acres and the highest skiable elevation in the state, Mount Bachelor is one of the country's top ski destinations . While there are plenty of trails for experienced skiers, Mount Bachelor also offers runs designed for beginners, as well as free and discounted ski lift tickets for first-timers. The mountain, which is a dormant volcano about 20 miles southwest of Bend, receives an average of 462 inches of snowfall annually from late November to May. The fun doesn't stop after ski season, though, when visitors can trade their ski poles and snowboards for mountain bikes and hiking shoes.

This endless sea of sand is best described as otherworldly. In fact, this locale inspired Frank Herbert to write his sci fi book, "Dune." To catch an eyeful of the park's tallest dunes, hike the John Dellenback Dunes Trail. Once you've exhausted yourself from walking on dry sand (trust us, it won't take long), opt for a high-speed ATV or dune buggy ride, or hop on a sandboard. Then, enjoy some shade in the coastal forest at Tahkenitch, or look for wildlife at the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area.

Foodies and outdoor lovers will love visiting Tillamook. This small town in northwestern Oregon is an outdoor recreation hub where you can enjoy hiking, kayaking, crabbing, clamming and fishing, among other activities. After an active day, you'll find no shortage of places to satisfy your appetite. Tillamook is perhaps most famous for its dairy industry, so no trip here would be complete without touring the Tillamook Creamery and sampling its cheese and ice cream. Also save time for trying local brews at one of downtown Tillamook's breweries.

Situated roughly 12 miles south of Bend in the Deschutes National Forest, Newberry National Volcanic Monument features one of Oregon's most unique landscapes. The monument's nearly 55,000 acres are filled with lava flows and other fascinating geological features, including a lava river cave and a lava field where NASA astronauts trained to walk on the moon in the '60s. There's also Paulina Peak, which you can climb to the top of for incredible views. When you're not hiking, go biking, boating or fishing.

Although many people think of Oregon as one big forest — or equate the Pacific Northwest  with Portland , its unabashedly weirdest and biggest city — this massive state offers so much more.

Whether you’re a fan of outdoor adventure, or more into food and wine, you’ll find plenty to experience in Oregon. Here's our guide to the best places to go and why you should spend your time there.

Crowds line up to buy food at street carts

1. Portland

Best place for foodies

Portland is most people’s introduction to Oregon, and as the largest (and quirkiest) city in the state, it’s got plenty to see and do. It’s where you’ll find the state’s best museums and public parks, and the celebrated  Powell’s City of Books is located right in the heart of the city. Portland is also a nationally recognized culinary hub, and plenty of people travel to the City of Roses with one activity in mind: eating. While it is known for its street food scene, with hundreds of  food carts all around town, Portland also has a swankier side, with high-end restaurants such as the James Beard Award-winning Haitian spot  kann drawing in visitors from across the USA and beyond. There is hardly room to do justice to all the wonderful places to eat in Portland in this article, so check out our suggestions for all the best locally-owned and loved restaurants in Portland.

Insider tip: If you’re planning a food trip to Portland, be aware that many local restaurants are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

2. The Oregon Coast

Best place for scenic drives

Another one of Oregon’s particularly gorgeous areas, the Oregon Coast is not your average beach destination. Throw out all notions of long days lounging on hot sands and instead embrace the opportunity to enjoy nearly 400 miles of public-access coastline fringed with massive cliffs topped with windswept conifers and huge expanses of sand virtually devoid of loungers and tawdry beach cafes. Nature and scenery are the big draws here, with numerous natural areas and state parks – including the  Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and  Humbug Mountain State Park – enticing hikers and campers.

Planning tip: While you can theoretically drive the Oregon Coast in a day, it’s wise to give yourself a bit more time to explore. This is a region that merits slow drives and lots of extra time to pull over and take in the scenery.

3. The Columbia River Gorge

Best place for hikers

While it would be unfair to say that one part of Oregon is the most scenic, the  Columbia River Gorge is definitely up there. Straddling both the Oregon and  Washington sides of the Columbia River (which forms a partial border between the two states), the Gorge as it’s affectionately shortened to, is a fantastic place for day hikes, and most trailheads are within a 30- to 45-minute drive from downtown Portland. Even if you aren’t feeling like exerting much energy, it’s worth visiting to check out Multnomah Falls (the highest waterfall in the state) or to take in the views from the  Vista House , a rest area built in the art nouveau style.

Planning tip: Summer weekends in the Gorge get incredibly crowded and are best avoided if possible. If you don’t have any other options, arrive as early as you can to make sure you can at least snag a parking spot.

Best place for runners and cyclists

Nicknamed “Track Town USA,” Eugene is considered a de facto capital of track and field, and it hosts numerous running events, particularly in the summer. It’s also a great place for more casual joggers, with numerous trails and a mix of hilly and flat terrain. Cyclists will find that the college city’s numerous bike lanes – including the Ruth Bascom Riverbank Trail System, which runs through sprawling  Alton Baker Park – make it easy to get around town on two wheels.

5. The Willamette Valley

Best place for wine lovers

You don’t need to venture to  France or  Italy  — or even to California’s  Napa Valley  — to immerse yourself in all things viticulture. Oregon’s  Willamette Valley is among the best places to go wine tasting in the country. This region, which runs from just south of Portland all the way to Eugene, has all the trappings of a postcard-perfect wine destination, complete with rolling hills covered with vine plantings, lovely bistros, and loads of comfy-cozy bed and breakfasts. Best of all, tasting fees tend to be a little lower than in some other parts of the country, and are typically waived if you buy a couple of bottles or more. If you're thinking about a trip to Willamette Valley, check out our first timer's guide to the region.

Planning tip: Visit in the late summer for great weather and to see grapes on the vines. If you do end up coming during the harvest season (usually in September and October) expect some delays due to slow-moving farm equipment on country roads.

Best place for all-weather adventurers

The Central Oregon city of  Bend is a magnet for outdoorsy folk, and its position east of the Cascade Mountains means that the climate is a bit drier and sunnier than what you’ll find in the western reaches of the state. Bend draws in skiers and snowboarders in the winter due to its proximity to Mt Bachelor, but it’s a particularly great base for summertime adventures. Popular activities range from rafting the Deschutes River to setting off on backpacking adventures in the  Three Sisters Wilderness . Bend is also just a short drive from  Smith Rock , one of the top destinations in the state for rock climbing.

7. Crater Lake National Park

Best place for lake lovers

Protecting the deepest lake in the country,  Crater Lake National Park is the only national park in Oregon. It's worth taking a boat ride out to  Wizard Island , a cinder cone islet in the center of the caldera, and going for a spin  along Rim Drive, a 33-mile loop that offers motorists (and cyclists) the chance to see Crater Lake from every angle. For particularly great views of the lake and the woods that surround us, take the 3.4-mile hike up to the top of Garfield Peak, accessible via a trailhead at the park's Rim Village.

Planning tip: Crater Lake National Park is incredibly popular, and campsites and lodging at the park fill up well in advance, so book as early as you can. If you can’t secure a spot, nearby Diamond Lake is a good alternative and is within an easy drive of the national park.

Best place for theater fans

A short drive from the  California border, the  Southern Oregon city of Ashland’s biggest claim to fame is the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, a theater company that’s been presenting the works of the Bard himself since launching back in 1935. The season lasts for most of the year, taking a break in the cooler winter months, and features a solid annual lineup of Shakespeare’s classics along with a smattering of plays from other playwrights. For more of the best things to do in Ashland, check out our guide to this fun city.

A winter adventure, a summer surfing season, gushing waterfalls to chase in spring, and a temperate lowkey fall with hikes nearly to yourself… It’s your Oregon adventure to choose!

Visiting Oregon in Winter

Oregon is a winter wonderland for anyone wanting some legendary powder paired with incredible peaks for skiing. Of course, there are also impressive coastal storms and snowy bizarre alien landscapes that await you. Don’t let the chill scare you off; winter is an amazing time to visit Oregon.

The Willamette Valley is one of the best destinations in the Northwest over wintertime!

Due to its temperate climate, the temperatures don’t get anywhere near as frosty as other destinations in the winter. It has temperatures of up to 46 degrees in the wintertime and usually doesn’t dip below 33.

However, winter can be the rainiest month, with 15 days of rain in December. So pack your rain jacket!

The Detroit Lake Recreation Area is open year-round, spanning over 3,500 acres. A little higher up, there are opportunities to snowshoe.

Plus, if the weather is cooler, there are plenty of cozy accommodations to curl up and watch the snowfall. It is the quietest time of year, but there are still chances to enjoy wine tasting with a professional winemaker or chase after waterfalls .

While you won’t be sunbathing on the beach in the winter, it’s still a great time to visit. Crowds are virtually non-existent, and you’ll get the odd crisp winter day that’s great for exploring and photography!

Waves at Monolith Rock during winter in Oregon

If you’re into storm watching, spend some time looking out onto the coastline before returning to your accommodation with a hot drink. Although the days are quite short in Oregon, it’s a great time for whale watching!

If you want to hike, coastal Oregon’s relatively mild temperatures (they rarely go under freezing and can be as high as 52 degrees!) in the wintertime mean that some trails stay open year-round.

If you want to try out snow sports, there’s no better time to visit Central Oregon than the wintertime! Pull on your bib and take them to the slopes, either skiing , snowboarding, sledding, or snowshoeing.

It doesn’t usually get too cold in the lowlands, with temperatures hovering around freezing.

However, some roads and hikes will be closed during the winter months, so we’d recommend visiting in a different month if you want to do activities other than snowsports.

If you’re visiting Eastern Oregon in the wintertime, expect dramatic snow-covered landscapes that look like they should be off a Christmas card.

The average daytime temperature can be around 40 degrees, although it can be much colder in the skiing regions! Skiing and snowboarding opportunities are abundant, with plenty of pistes for all abilities, including kid-friendly slopes.

If you aren’t into winter sports, there are plenty of other things to do in the winter – although make sure that you wrap up warm, as the temperatures can be freezing.

If you’re interested in fossils, visit the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument or the Wheeler High School Fossil Beds.

Visiting Oregon in Spring

One of the best times to visit Oregon is in Spring! When the waterfalls are gushing, the tourists aren’t in full force, and the weather starts warming up. Not to mention you can still nab some deals on accommodation during these quieter months.

The Valley region of Oregon is a top destination to visit during the springtime! The region comes to life with blooming flowers and baby animals at this time of year. Temperatures generally hover around the 70s throughout the season, sometimes even rising to 80 degrees in the latter part of the month.

Columbia Gorge in spring best time to visit Oregon

There are also many events in the springtime, including McMinnville Wine and Food Classic, which runs in mid-march. There’s also Tulip Fest in late March and Memorial Weekend in Wine Country towards the end of the month.

The weather can be temperamental in Oregon in spring, but plenty of reasons to still visit. While you might not be sunbathing, the temperature rarely reaches 60 degrees until early May, there are plenty of coastal attractions.

Cape Ferrelo in spring best time to visit Oregon

April and May have the year’s lowest tides, adding complexity to photographs and giving an extra dynamic to coastal walks. You might still experience some wintery storms, but with warmer weather.

You’ll enjoy beautiful sky colors throughout the springtime and the chance to spot whales and orcas, whose migration continues throughout the springtime! You’ll also find that accommodation prices are affordable outside peak season.

When the snow starts melting, it can be a lovely time to take to the hiking trails – and if you’re the adventurous type, you can be among the first people of the year to go hiking!

Road with view of forest and Paulina Peak in Newberry National Volcanic Monument

The Oregon Badlands Wilderness is one of the best hikes to try during this time of year, as it doesn’t have the same snow or ice as those on higher elevations.

Also, the Tam-A-Lau Trail , Suttle Lake, and the Deschutes River Trail are excellent for spring hiking and are accessible quite early in the year!

Tam A Lau Trail in spring best time to visit Oregon

The roads to some other hikes are closed during this time of year, so you might need to trek a few miles to reach the start, but if you’re adventurous, this is a great chance to explore some of the region’s more popular treks before they get too busy.

Visiting in spring is also a great chance to get some cheaper lodgings than during the summer or peak ski season!

The average daily temperature is around 74, but it can vary dramatically depending on the month.

When the snow melts, Eastern Oregon becomes an incredible place to visit. This is some people’s favorite time to see the state, as the weather can be not too cold and not too warm! See Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in the USA, before the crowds arrive!

Hells Canyon in spring best time to visit Oregon

When the weather warms up, it’s possible to travel through the river gorge on a rafting boat. There are also plenty of opportunities to see wildlife, including elk, deer, and mountain sheep!

Rain is rare during this season – expect only two or three days per month. The temperatures can vary wildly, with snow up until March and warm weather beginning later in May. However, highs can reach up to 72 degrees, and lows are typically around 42 degrees.

Visiting Oregon in Summer

This is the peak season to visit Oregon, but we don’t blame you—The weather makes this time of year perfect for any adventure as the snow has cleared, the road are open, and the sun is out! This is also the perfect time of year to enjoy any water-related activities in the state.

Oregon in summer has cooler temperatures than elsewhere in the USA, and the Valley region is no exception.

Temperatures usually hover around the mid-80s, with lower temperatures reasonably common. There are also only 8-10 days of rain during the entire summer. This means it’s excellent weather for hiking and exploring!

Virtually all of the attractions in the Valley region of Oregon are available for anyone to enjoy during the summer. Go horseback riding , sample local wine, or visit small, local towns.

It’s no surprise that summertime is the busiest at the beach! Some of Oregon’s best beaches : Manzanita, Arch Cape, Cannon Beach , and Rockaway Beach, are all packed during this season.

While it doesn’t have scorching temperatures in the summertime, it’s usually sunny, with heat reaching the mid to high 60s.

People on the Oregon coastline know that this is the best season to visit, and they’ve started some festivals, like the Sandcastle Contest in June. Plus, you can enjoy plenty of activities, including fishing, cycling, surfing, and kayaking .

Unlike elsewhere in the state, Eastern Oregon can be scorching in the summertime! Weather can rise to over 88 degrees, particularly in July and August.

Camping in Alvord Desert is a fun thing to do on your Oregon road trip.

Although Oregon has a reputation for being wet, the high desert region is dry and desert-like. It only gets 10 inches of rain throughout the entire year. There’s a mix of desert, mountains, and plains.

While Oregon might be one of the best places to visit in August —This means that the eastern area of the state is the only part of Oregon where it might be a bit too hot in the summertime!

However, if you like the warm weather, there’s plenty to see in eastern Oregon throughout the summertime.

Enjoy Hells Canyon, which borders Idaho, the Pillars of Rome, which resembles ancient Roman ruins, and the dramatic Alvord Desert .

Visiting Oregon in Fall

We are quite partial to fall in Oregon. We often plan our road trips and activities during these months as the weather is ideal, the snow hasn’t started, so everything is still open, and the main rush of tourists has subsided.

Harvest season is a wonderful time to enjoy Oregon’s wine country.

Throughout the winter months, the weather can cloud over – in fact, November can be the wettest month with over 11 inches of rain throughout the 30 days. However, there are still plenty of accessible hikes during this season!

Thor's Well

Stroll along the beaches, hike the coastal path around the Cape Perpetua headland in the Siuslaw National Forest and explore the coastal range.

You can also take a scenic drive around Oregon’s highlights if the weather isn’t great. Try the stunning Alsea highway, which drives between Waldport and Philomath, with impressive vistas of the state’s best mountains as you trundle along.

The temperature starts to decline in the fall, and it can be a great time to visit the Eastern Oregon region. As fall is between the peak summer season and ski season, the prices can be lower, but there are still so many attractions to enjoy.

Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

If you like hiking, fall is the perfect season. Trails aren’t usually closed due to snow, but you won’t struggle with scorching midday heat like you could in the summer!

The harvest period in September is also a great time to visit. You’ll have the opportunity to sample plentiful local food, including delicious fresh fruits and vegetables.

The rainy season officially starts in September, although it’s never too rainy in this part of the state – a far cry from the western coastal regions!

Oregon is a complex state, with lots of different climates and weather patterns. Whether you want to traverse national parks, go skiing, enjoy local culture, or take some of the best hikes in the state, this guide should have you covered!

Whatever the season of your Oregon trip, there is always somewhere and something to enjoy!

There are innumerable outdoor activities to enjoy in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge: hiking to waterfalls, through the Mosier Twin Tunnels, and along the Pacific Crest Trail, to scratch the surface. Drive east along the Columbia River, and not only are you rewarded with spectacular scenery, but you’ll find more entertainment and fun in the towns of Hood River and The Dalles.

Fall, in particular, is a wonderful time to visit the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. Peak leaf color time is in mid-late October, according to the Fall Foliage Prediction Map . There are many great activities, restaurants, hotels, wineries, and spots of interest to enjoy as you marvel at this beautiful fall location.

Things To Do In The Columbia River Gorge During Fall

The Columbia River Gorge is filled with historic sites, waterfalls, hiking trails, and boating and fishing opportunities. There are dams and locks to visit, museums to explore, ample water access, and beautiful views to take in.

Pro Tip: Consider making Hood River your base of operations. It’s 60 miles from Portland but provides easy access to major attractions up and down Interstate 84, which hugs the river from Multnomah Falls to The Dalles. You’ll have spectacular views of the fall colors, the mountains, and the river as you make your stops.

Cascades Locks

Stop at historic Cascades Locks to walk or drive across the steel Bridge of the Gods, built in 1926. The toll is around $6 roundtrip. If you only want to park below the bridge and marvel at its unique cantilever engineering, drive into the town of Cascades Locks at exit 44 on I-84. It is worth it.

Hood River, OR waterfront park

Hood River Waterfront Park

Hood River Waterfront Park is home to parasailing and windsurfing on the river. Only 20 miles from Cascades Locks on I-84, you can watch hundreds of paddle boarders and windsurfers compete in events throughout the temperate months. Enthusiasts don wet suits in the fall to keep paddling and sailing.

The park has a sandy beach, a biking and walking promenade, and amazing views of the river and mountains. Several watersports equipment companies are headquartered here, and you can see their latest products as well as grab a snack from their cafes and food trucks.

Fall Festivals

Hood River festivals in October include the Harvest Fest and the Quilt Show . The Harvest Fest is a cornucopia of local produce, crafts, live music, and prepared food; tickets are around $10 and are discounted for seniors. The Quilt Show features 100+ award-winning quilts and fills two fairground buildings Additional events throughout the month include a craft fair and Halloween events.

Historic Locks And Dams

You can visit several historic locks and dams on the Columbia River. The Bonneville Lock & Dam, Cascades Locks, The Dalles Lock & Dam, and the John Jay Dam are all available for you to visit. These sites are maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and include visitor centers. Some offer tours. You can picnic and fish at these sites as well.

Along the way, you will find many opportunities to stop and see waterfalls along this what was the first automobile road going west to Portland. The views are amazing, as it sits above I-84 looking out on the river.

Short hikes can be accessed from all the parking areas at each of the waterfall sites along the way. The most recognizable Oregon waterfall, Multnomah Falls, is the centerpiece of this drive. Stop and visit the falls and the lodge.

Columbia Gorge Discovery Center And Museum

This museum in The Dalles provides a wide range of history that includes the geologic formation of the Gorge, the evolution of birds and animals that inhabit the area, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the conclusion of the Oregon Trail (before wagons and travelers got onto boats and barges to head west down the river). See the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum website for admission prices.

National Neon Sign Museum

Try an offbeat attraction: the National Neon Sign Museum in The Dalles. Hundreds of real neon signs from gas stations, hotels, restaurants, and other unique places are housed here for the public to enjoy. Take a trip down memory lane as you view this collection of vintage Americana.

Best Restaurants In The Columbia River Gorge

The Gorge has a wide variety of culinary options. While local salmon is very popular, the fishing season only runs through mid-September for Chinook salmon. Many restaurants also offer great steaks from local cattle ranches year-round.

The most popular venues are the ones with a view, so plan ahead if you visit on a weekend. Don’t hesitate to try the wide variety of orchards and cideries, taprooms, distilleries, and wineries. Many serve food as well as beverages. Finally, take advantage of the seasonal produce by visiting local farmers’ markets and the Hood River Fruit Loop.

The Restaurant At Multnomah Falls Lodge

This lodge restaurant provides salmon and trout specialties as well as incomparable views of the falls. Sunday Brunch is a popular option here.

Bridgeside Restaurant

Bridgeside Restaurant at The Bridge of the Gods is casual with amazing views of the river and bridge. What better way to enjoy a meal and the scenery of the Gorge?

The Hood River Fruit Loop

Columbia River Wineries And Breweries

Wineries and breweries are plentiful in the Columbia River area. You’ll find a dozen tasting rooms and vineyard tours up and down the river.

Try Evoke Winery in Hood River; it also offers a package with a stay at the Hood River Hotel. Or try the 15 Mile Winery tasting room in The Dalles.

Local breweries are in both cities. Stop by Clock Tower Ales in The Dalles for a unique experience in the old county courthouse built in 1883. Or head to pFriem Family Brewers ; it is located next to the Hood River Waterfront Park, giving you a great way to watch the windsurfers or boat traffic on the river.

Full Sail Brewery prepared a special batch in honor of the Hood River Hops Fest on October 1, 2022. Even if you miss the festival, you probably can catch this small batch beer — or try one of the other fan favorites, like Cosmic Gorge Hazy Pale — at their brew pub .

Kickstand Coffee & Kitchen

For fun, try KickStand Coffee & Kitchen . This place is all about fun craft cocktails, from frozen favorites like the Sesh Margarita to the lemongrass mule. They offer lunch and dinner as well in a casual atmosphere in the heart of downtown Hood River.

Hi-Way House

Hi-Way House is a local favorite in The Dalles. It’s not much to look at on the outside, but inside, steak and seafood reign supreme. The ribeye has been their signature dish since the restaurant opened in the 1940s. Be sure to try the peppermint ice cream for dessert.

The area’s best on-the-river dining may be at Riverside at the Best Western Plus Hood River Inn . The views are incomparable and menu items are locally sourced and seasonal. It was a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice in 2021.

Columbia Gorge Hotel & Spa

Columbia Gorge Hotel & Spa , our third national historic site, was built in 1906. The hotel is on the West Cliff at Hood River overlooking the Columbia River and provides great views. Enjoy the on-site restaurant, Simon’s Cliffhouse for fine dining featuring pacific northwest seafood.

Inn At The Gorge

This bed and breakfast inn was built around 1906 and is possibly haunted. It sits a few blocks up the hill from downtown Hood River, making it a great spot to explore restaurants, bars, and shopping in the city center.

Oregon State Parks For Camping

Viento, Memaloose, and Ainsworth state parks sit along the Columbia River and provide great camping. These gem parks have beautiful full-hookup and tent campsites that are perfect for watching the sunset on the river.

Pro Tips: Be prepared for all kinds of weather in the fall. Temperatures can vary from the low 50s at night to the high 70s during the day. Winds off the river can kick up and chill the temperatures. Dress in layers for maximum enjoyment.

Best places to visit in October in USA

October is a fabulous time to travel, and these are some of the most ideal spots in these gorgeous United States to see. From popular fall foliage spots to destinations you’ve never heard of, let’s dive into the list!

1. The Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina to Virginia

best places to visit in October USA winding road with bright red orange and green trees

Average temp:  high 62, low 41

Stretching 469 miles from the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the entrance to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (where it turns into the equally scenic Skyline Drive), the Blue Ridge Parkway is widely regarded as one of America’s most scenic roads.

More than 15 million people using the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) each year, making it the most visited of all the national park units in the United States. So it’s also arguably the most popular!

The BRP’s origins date back to 1935, when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the historic initiative part of his New Deal. It was designed to improve American infrastructure and create jobs as a means to accelerate the nation’s economic recovery after the Great Depression.

It took until 1966 to construct the majority of the road, and another 21 years to finish the picturesque stretch from the Linn Cove Viaduct to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina.

The result is an epic and iconic road trip that dazzles with spectacular colors in the fall, when the leaves turn to sun-speckled gems in red, orange, and golden hues. It’s by far one of the most scenic fall drives in the US!!

An autumn drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway takes you through the Jefferson, George Washington, Nantahala, and Pisgah National Forests; numerous impressive state parks (including NC’s Mount Mitchell State Park, the highest peak east of the Mississippi); and countless hiking trails, waterfalls, rivers, lakes and streams.

There are also some 200 breathtaking BRP overlooks as well as charming mountain towns such as Banner Elk, Boone, and  Little Switzerland .

The best of the parkway’s landmarks include Grandfather Mountain State Park, the Linville Gorge Wilderness, Looking Glass Rock, and Julian Price Memorial Park. Each offers opportunities to savor the splendor of America’s wilderness at its most pristine, preserved by FDR for future generations.

2. Bend, Oregon (one of the most underrated and best places to visit in October USA)

Average temp:  high 62, low 33

While Bend, Oregon is a fantastic destination year-round, the fall is a great time to visit this Central Oregon town. You’ll find far fewer crowds than in the summer months and the crisp autumn air is perfect for many outdoor adventures.

Bend is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, and October is a great time to experience Oregon’s high desert. Cooler autumn temperatures make it the perfect time of year to hit the nearby trails.

There are a variety of  hikes in Bend, Oregon  for all skill levels and in a diverse range of settings, from pine forests to snowcapped peaks to juniper and sage dotted deserts. You can also get out onto the water on a SUP or kayak or cruise through some of the famed Bend mountain biking trails.

A fun fall activity is to head to nearby Smith Rock State Park for beautiful views and a lovely riverside walk. Once you’ve had your fill, head to the ranch just outside the park that has a large pumpkin patch, food trucks and festive games for all ages.

October is the perfect time of year to hop around the different breweries around town to sample the local brews. If you’re a real craft beer enthusiast, you may want to participate in the Bend Ale Trail, which is run by the local tourism board. Collect stamps at each brewery you visit for a prize!

3. Mammoth Lakes, California

Average temp:  high 60, low 30

One of the best places to visit in October in USA is  Mammoth Lakes . It’s located in Eastern California and is one of the most underrated places to visit in the USA in the fall. The beautiful colorful trees with the mountains in the background make this a wonderful place to stay in October.

June Lake Loop is one of the best spots to experience the fall colors. There are many lakes to explore on the loop like Silver Lake, June Lake, Gull Lake, and Grant Lake.

The whole loop is filled with stunning yellow Aspen trees, and there are many spots to explore with these beautiful trees. Make sure to stop by Silver Lake Cafe for lunch and watch the stunning views of Silver Lake while you eat.

Another great spot to see fall colors is Convict Lake which is located southeast of Mammoth Lakes . The yellow Aspens are situated at the mountain base, so it is best to walk the whole loop.

You can also visit many of the lakes that are located in Mammoth Lakes Basin. They include lakes like Twin Lakes, Lake Mamie, Horseshoe Lake, Lake Mary and Lake George. It’s a magical area to explore in the early cool fall morning.

There are so many yellow colors in Mammoth Lakes. It is probably one of the most underrated areas to experience fall foliage, and one of the best places to visit in the US in October!

4. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado (one of the best October vacation destinations)

creek with snow yellow foliage on trees and mountains in distance

Average temp:  high 46, low 29

Colorado’s Rocky Mountain is one of the most beautiful (and popular) national parks in the country.

Located about 2 hours away from Denver, this park takes time ans effort to explore with countless trails, waterfalls and even one of Colorado’s most popular “fourteeners” Longs Peak.

Rocky Mountain National Park is pure magic during fall, when the incredible golden colors come out in full display. The best time to see them is from mid-September through early October.

Another thing you should know about visiting RMNP during the fall is that weekends still might be busy, as more people come to take pictures and see thousands of amazing golden-hue Aspen trees. Crowds begin to dissipate in the fall, and if you want the ultimate experience, try to plan your visit for weekday.

To see the fall colors in their full glory, take a drive along the Trail Ridge Road that is open from Memorial Day until late October. The alpine highway is a perfect way to enjoy the the fall scenery at RMNP without getting out of the car. In fact, the Trail Ridge Road is one of the top Colorado bucket list activity!

Still, try to explore some trails. Take a hike or two to enjoy the fall colors , and if you plan on doing a more challenging trail at a higher altitude, make sure to bring some layers . Temperatures begin to drop in the fall, and it’s a good idea to bring a jacket with you, especially if you plan on camping here.

Note: through most of October, the park requires a timed entry permit. Plan your trip in advance and grab your permit here .

5. Door County, Wisconsin

Average temp:  high 56, low 41

Door County, Wisconsin likely isn’t the first spot to come to mind when thinking of amazing fall colors in the United States. However, the colors here are breathtaking , and there are many wonderful activities to enjoy in Door County during fall!

The colors begin changing during the end of September, and visitors hoping to see the leaves during their peak color should plan to visit the area in mid-October.

To see some of the best fall colors in Door County, try hiking in Peninsula State Park, Whitefish Dunes State Park, Cave Point County Park and The Ridges Sanctuary, just to name a few spots.

For those looking for a less active leaf-peeping experience, be sure to take a drive along Highway 42. You can also see the leaves from above at viewing platforms, such as the newly constructed Sturgeon Bay Maritime Museum Lighthouse Tower.

Fall is also a great time to visit the apple orchards in Door County. Be sure to stop by Wood Orchard Market, where you can get awesome seasonal products such as their special apple cider donuts!

With the cooler fall temperatures, cozying up to a fire during a traditional Door County fish boil is one of the best  things to do in Wisconsin  at this time of year. Fish Boils are fun to watch and delicious. Each boil master makes theirs a little differently but, you can count on all recipes using white fish and various vegetables and spices boiled in a large kettle over an open fire.

Door County is an underrated destination, and definitely one of the best places to visit in October USA!

6. San Diego, California

Average temp:  high 74, low 61

Listen, San Diego has amazing temperatures most of the year, so there’s not really a ‘bad’ time to go. However, as someone who’s traveled to San Diego many times in the fall, I can truly say that October is a fantastic time to visit this amazing city!

Less tourists visit San Diego in the fall, so there’s not as many limitations to amazing activities because of overcrowding. For instance, the San Diego Zoo is a fantastic spot to explore. It’s really enjoyable in the fall when you can see what you’re there to see, instead of waiting all the time.

An amazing activity in the San Diego area is kayaking in La Jolla Cove in October. Other top things to do include Balboa Park, Old Town San Diego and Coronado Island.

By the way, here’s an idea of how to spend a weekend in San Diego if it’s on your short list!

7. Oahu, Hawaii (top of the list for warm places to visit in October in USA)

warm places to visit in October in usa view of beach looking down with palm trees and blue water

Average temp:  high 84, low 69

The island of Oahu has beautiful weather throughout the year but fall is one of the best times to visit. At this time of year, you can expect fewer crowds around the island, plenty of days with clear blue skies and the island is still really warm so you can spend your time lying on the beach.

While it may be hotter in the summer months, the fall actually offers a more enjoyable temperature so you can get out and explore the island.

One of the highlights of any visit to Oahu is exploring the many beaches dotted around the island. The most beautiful beach on Oahu is Lanikai Beach , which is a palm tree lined stretch of brilliant white sand and crystal-clear blue water.

As it’s on the east side of the island the water is usually quite calm so it is ideal for swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. If you are feeling energetic you can kayak out to the Mokalua Islands which are just a few hundred metres from shore.

Another great activity is to explore Kualoa Regional Park, which is where scenes from Jurassic Park were filmed. You can explore the park on foot or take a quad bike tour. The mountains here are unique with their deep ridges and tropical green coverings.

During a visit to Oahu you can also snorkel, surf, hike, visit local farms to try fresh fruit and so much more. It’s an amazing island and the weather in particular makes this a perfect fall getaway.

8. Acadia National Park, Maine (a top choice on this list of best places to visit in October in USA)

best places to visit in October USA view of multicolored fall foliage with ocean in distance

Average temp:  high 55, low 38

Acadia is among a very small group of US national parks with two genuine ‘peak’ seasons. Summer is naturally congested in Acadia, but fall is equally as busy and because of the spectacularly beautiful Autumnal foliage lighting up the park.

But striking colors aren’t everything and the fall season is loaded with other benefits in Acadia National Park.

Hiking conditions are cooler in September and October, which comes in particularly handy when climbing both of Acadia’s adrenaline pumping hikes – Beehive Trail and Precipice Trail.

Beehive and Precipice are the two outstanding hikes but there are a dozen other trails without ladder climbing elements. All of which summit with remarkable views over the Gulf of Maine, gorgeous lakes, tiny islands and of course mountain sides covered in vibrant orange, yellow, red and green trees.

Epic sunrises are one of Acadia’s greatest assets and from the summit of ultra-popular Cadillac Mountain, you can be among the first people in the US to see the sun rise over the eastern horizon. In fall, sunrise is over an hour later than in summer, which means a slightly less agonizing alarm time.

To see the richest and most vivid colors, simply get stuck into all of the  best things to do in Acadia National Park , including hikes, lakes and carriage roads.

Pro tip: Be sure to book Bar Harbor accommodation a long way in advance to avoid missing out and always be out in the park early, parking spaces are limited and fill quickly each day.

Without a doubt, Acadia National Park is one of the best places to visit in October in USA.

Moab, Utah is an adventure city in the Southwest USA. With countless national parks, state parks and recreation areas surrounding Moab, it’s truly an amazing place to vacation.

It makes this list of the best places to visit in October in the USA because the weather usually hasn’t turned too wintry yet to enjoy the outdoors. And in the summer, Moab is packed with tourism!

If you love hiking, October is the perfect time to explore Arches National Park by foot or hike Canyonlands National Park . There’s also white water rafting, canyoneering, wineries and breweries and so much more.

Visitors should still book accommodations as far out as possible to get the best pricing. And be sure to book any tours in advance since Moab is a hot spot!

10. Asheville, North Carolina

beautiful waterfall surrounded by orange and yellow fall foliage in Asheville NC

Average temp:  high 68, low 46

Asheville, North Carolina is one of the best places in the US to experience fall.  The mountains are blazing with red, orange, and yellow leaves, the weather is perfect and the orchards are open.

While it may be the busiest time of year, it’s well worth the visit, but try to time it for a weekday visit instead of the weekends.

Be sure to spend some time walking around downtown Asheville and wandering the shops of the hip West Asheville area.  Visiting the Biltmore Estate is also a must-do.

There are so many amazing places to eat in Asheville, you’ll be able to try new, delicious food for every meal. Tupelo Honey and Gan Shan West are great options.

One of the best things to do in Asheville is driving part of the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway and the best time to  drive the Blue Ridge Parkway is fall . There are tons of hikes to waterfalls nearby like Linville Falls, Looking Glass Falls, or Moore Cove Falls.

Visiting Asheville in the fall makes all of these things even better than they normally are because you get to see them surrounded by stunning fall foliage, and who doesn’t love that?

Alternatively, check out Naches Peak Loop, a part of the Pacific Crest Trail that traverses colorful subalpine valleys bursting with autumnal colors while snowy Mount Rainier looms overhead.

For a lower impact way to enjoy the fall foliage, take a scenic drive through the Chinook Scenic Byway. It’s a 107 mile road that will take you through both Mount Rainier National Park and Mount Baker – Snoqualmie National Forest.

This drive provides a gorgeous tour of rushing waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and of course, panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains’ beautiful fall colors.

12. Boston, Massachusetts

Average temp:  high 62, low 47

Fall is the ultimate time to visit New England. From “leaf-peeping” in parks to crisp weather and apple-picking, it’s no wonder that visitors flock to the region from all over the world. If you’re seeking a combination of a city break and a fantastic fall destination, consider Boston.

Boston is teeming with history, green spaces, restaurants, and quaint neighborhoods to charm any visitor. Known as the “Cradle of the American Revolution,” don’t miss the Freedom Trail .

It’s a 2-mile, largely flat walking path that traces various sites of historical importance, such as the site of the Boston Massacre, the beginning of Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride, and the Battle of Bunker Hill in Charlestown.

The Trail kicks off at the beautiful Boston Common, the oldest city park in the U.S., dating back to 1634! As you walk, you will also discover other lovely fall destinations, such as the Beacon Hill neighborhood, with its cobbled streets and romantic buildings. Be sure to stop at Acorn Street, said to be the most-photographed street in the U.S .

For some Victorian splendor, visit Copley Square and the Back Bay, gazing up at its two beautiful churches and the Boston Public Library – certainly one of the city’s most picturesque places. In particular, the Library’s Bates Room, with its glowing lamps and vintage books, will give you major “back-to-school season” vibes.

Nearby, the Commonwealth Avenue Mall has gorgeous trees in blazing fall colors – one of the best places to check out fall foliage in town . There are also a variety of parks to discover if foliage is what you seek, including the Fens, the Emerald Necklace parks system and the Public Garden.

Boston is certainly one of the best places to travel in October in USA, especially if you love history!

13. Napa Valley, California (a favorite of these fall vacation ideas)

Napa valley california in autumn view of winery with fall foliage and road with hills

Average temp:  high 77, low 47

It’s without question that the beautiful  Napa Valley  region in California is one of the most beautiful fall travel destinations in the USA. The normally vibrant green of the grapevines turns to shades of yellow, gold and orange in Napa Valley. And as the weather cools, the leaves start to fall, leaving a carpet of orangey gold underfoot.

Napa Valley is actually a region featuring a collection of towns in between the vineyards and rolling hills. The area is a really easy drive from the best things to do in San Francisco , and will take around 1.5 hours. Having a car is a great idea in Napa Valley so that you are able to hop between wine tastings and towns at your leisure.

For a spectacular view, Artesa Wines is a great choice for a wine tasting as the large-windowed cellar door sits stop a hill providing great panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

Auburn James, just outside St Helena, is also a beautiful winery to stop in at, with a gorgeous tasting room. It is worth noting that booking in advance for your tastings is always a good idea and usually involves a small payment.

Once you’ve finished your wine tastings, head into the township of St Helena for dinner at the Farmstead – a stellar farm to plate restaurant pairing local wines with delicious food.

If you’re looking for the best place to visit in October USA, look no further than Chicago!  This fun city is vibrant and full of fall foliage! Plus, there’s a ton of things to do, indoor and out.

While you could spend a week in the city, a Chicago 3 day itinerary would be just about perfect.

A must-see is Millennium Park and the world-famous “Bean.” October is the  perfect time to witness the ever changing colors of autumn against the Chicago skyline.  The Bean is sort of like the cherry on top of that whole experience!

If you’re into museums, Chicago has so many options to choose from. The Art Institute of Chicago is located downtown within walking distance of many other main attractions. Enjoy works by Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and so many others!

15. Kauai, Hawaii (another favorite on this list of best places to visit in the US in October)

kauai view of the napali coast rugged Ridgeline with colorful fauna and deep blue ocean

Average temp:  high 76, low 60

It sounds cliché, but Hawaii is such a gorgeous destination that it’s always worth the visit! However, as someone who has been to this beautiful island chain many times, visiting in the fall is one of my very favorite times to go.

Kauai is one of the best places to visit in October in the USA because it’s the shoulder season so it’s more affordable. Hiking trails and parking lots are generally less full, making it a great time to vacation on this island.

Highlights in Kauai in October

  • See the Waimea Canyon and NaPali Coast. It’s absolutely stunning!
  • Helicopter tour of the island . Since 80% of it isn’t drivable, this is the best way to see this gorgeous place.
  • Hike the first 2 miles of the Kalalau Trail . You’ll have to get advanced reservations to enter the park, but it’s a breathtaking experience!
  • Hike the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail in southern Kauai near Poipu. This is and easy walk and offers ocean views nearly the entire way.
  • Snorkel on Anini Beach. It’s one of the most calm spots on the island and a great spot to see sea turtles! (Just be sure to respect Hawaiian culture, keeping your distance from sea turtles and not walk on the coral.)

For the best places to eat in Kauai, it’s easier to get reservations for restaurants (which is recommended for Kauai since it’s a smaller island) in October.

Hands down, Hawaii is one of the very best states to visit in October, and Kauai is phenomenal!

Average temp:  high 58, low 46

Welcome to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the town National Geographic Travel has crowned “America’s Greatest Small Town.”

Portsmouth is the crown jewel of New Hampshire’s Seacoast and is perfectly situated within an hour from the White Mountains and an hour from Boston. Its location makes it the perfect New England destination for leaf peeping .

Downtown historical Portsmouth is very unique as it has colonial homes dating back to the 17th century. The most famous historical portion of the city is located in the south end. Strawbery Banke, an outdoor history museum, is New Hampshire’s oldest neighborhood to be settled by Europeans.

When visiting Portsmouth, be sure to check out all the small businesses downtown in an area of the city known as Market Square.

Portsmouth has more restaurants per capita than any other small town in the United States and is also home to dozens of charming boutiques. These boutiques come to life during the autumn with their seasonal decor and gift offerings.

Be sure to swing by Cup of Joe cafe for a cozy cup of salted caramel hot chocolate or their signature pumpkin spice latte. Lastly, the best thing about Portsmouth, NH is it’s a very walkable town, meaning no car is needed to explore this charming downtown this upcoming autumn season !

18. Eastern Sierra, California

lakeshore with waves yellow and orange trees with large cabins best places to visit in October USA

Average temp:  high 62, low 38 (varies)

The Eastern Sierra of California is a fabulous fall getaway destination in the USA. Fall color here is considered second only to New England , so you know you are in for a visual treat if you visit when the colors are at their peak!

From Lake Tahoe in the north to Bishop and Lone Pine in the south, the region is ablaze with foliage colors in the fall. You’ll be mesmerized by the show of yellow, oranges, and reds put on by aspens, willows and cottonwoods.

Taking a  Highway 395 road trip  is a great way to enjoy fall in the Eastern Sierra. If you prefer to have a base, Mammoth Lakes and Bishop are the largest towns in the area, and make for good bases from which to explore the beauty of the fall foliage all around you.

Doing scenic drives to enjoy the colors is the top thing to do in the fall. There are numerous paved and dirt roads you can drive. Both Inyo and Mono Counties offer the most beautiful drives. If you plan to drive the dirt roads, bring an appropriate vehicle.

The region is also known for its numerous spectacular lakes, so get out onto the water to enjoy the colors on the banks. Boating or kayaking is offered at many lakes. You can also go hiking, to view the colors up close: there are many legendary Eastern Sierra hikes from which to choose.

The Eastern Sierras are certainly one of the beset October vacations USA for lakes, mountains and hiking.

19. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia (another underrated destination on this list of beset places to travel in October in USA)

best October vacations usa view of mountains with green trees and red bushes on partly could day

Average temp:  high 58, low 39

You’ll hit gold if you visit Shenandoah National Park during the autumn . . . plus orange, red and burgundy.

Shenandoah’s trees shed their green attire. Autumn’s palette paints the forest rusty orange, reddish yellow, and burgundy. Woodland creatures abound, including black bears, deer, wild turkeys and bats.

Located less than two hours from Washington DC, Shenandoah National Park attracts hikers and drivers. It’s also a favorite for singles and families to spend a weekend. But book your reservations early for either the park campgrounds or the Skyland Resorts and Big Meadows hotels, as they routinely sell out for the weekend.

The best time to visit is Monday through Thursday as the 105-mile Skyline Drive can turn into a traffic jam in October at peak foliage times. Skyline Drive weaves its way across western Virginia. Speed limit is 35 mph.

Your best bet is to enter the enter at the Front Royal Entrance, stop at the Dickey Ridge Visitors Center to get a panoramic family portrait and then head down the road. Stop at a convenient parking lot so you can hike through forests, scale rocky ledges, explore Appalachian Trail stops and watch waterfalls.

Or you can spend 3 hours traveling the entire length of the park on Skyline Drive. It ends at Rockfish Gap Entrance Station, which is also the northern entrance to the  Blue Ridge Parkway .  Shenandoah National Park features 200,000 acres of protected land. Stony Man and Hawksbill peaks exceed 4,000 feet.

This beautiful fall destination is the perfect getaway for families, couples, solos or even a friends’ trip!

Fall vacation ideas

From big cities to wide open spaces, there’s still plenty more places to see on this mega list of the best place to visit in October in the US!

20. Austin, Texas

water falling over rock into pond on cloudy day

Average temp:  high 82, low 60

What a perfect city for a fall getaway! As someone who’s visited Austin a few times, I can honestly say October was my favorite! The weather is way better (i.e. way less hot) than during peak travel season.

Visiting Austin in the fall is the perfect time for outdoor adventures. There’s so much hiking in Austin, plus fall festivals, outdoor drive-in movies, pumpkin patches and more.

If you love being on the water, Lady Bird Lake is a great spot for kayaking or stand up paddle boarding. For easy hiking in Austin , consider McKinney Falls State Park, Barton Creek Greenbelt or the popular Mount Bonnell.

Of course there’s live music all over Austin, and let’s not forget the mural hunting, either. Whether you’re going for Insta-worthy shots or just happen to walk by them on your way to get epic cone at Amy’s Ice Cream, you’re bound to find some fun artwork in the downtown area.

October is the perfect time of year to spend a weekend in Austin .

21. Newport, Rhode Island

lighthouse along ocean at dusk best places to travel in October in USA

Average temp:  high 62, low 53

One of the best fall vacations in the US is definitely Newport, Rhode Island. The area has peak fall foliage throughout October.

It’s a small town located on Aquidneck Island and is surrounded by beautiful beaches and sea cliffs. During the fall, you can walk around and enjoy outdoor activities without the crowds.

The majority of people drive to Newport from somewhere on the east coast. If you’re visiting from further away, you can fly into Providence, Rhode Island, only 45 minutes away.

One of the best  things to do in Newport  is see the history of the area on the Cliff Walk. You can walk 3.5 miles past the Breakers, one of the Newport mansions, around sea cliffs, and past a few beaches.

Newport’s mansions are renowned for their architecture and history. Some of the mansions were constructed in the early 19th century. Walk around the Wharves (Bannister’s and Bowen’s) in the evening for a variety of food and shopping.

Newport has lots of delicious places to eat. For breakfast, head to Cru Cafe near the Audobain Museum – a great way to start the day is with their blueberry stuffed French toast!

Your New England vacation wouldn’t be complete without some seafood. At the Lobster Shack, you can find fresh seafood. You can stay at the Marriott Newport if you want to stay in the heart of Newport. The hotel is within walking distance of the wharves.

22. Aspen, Colorado (a top choice for best places to visit in October in the US)

Average temp:  high 58, low 31

Perhaps one of the most beautiful fall foliage settings is in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. The town of Aspen is perfect for a fall getaway because it’s surrounded by mountains and gorgeous aspen trees. I’m convinced it’s the among the best places to visit in October in USA.

Unlike some other destinations on this list which get vibrant reds and oranges during the fall, aspen trees turn a gorgeous yellow color. And when you get a mountainside full of them, it’s like eye candy!

A gorgeous day trip from Aspen is Maroon Bells Park. The feature is the mountain peak of Maroon Bells, which are surrounded by a lake and gorgeous aspen trees in the fall.

You could spend the day hiking the trails near the Maroon Bells if you love hiking and exploring the outdoors on foot. Note: you’ll want to plan ahead for this one, as reservations are now required to visit. Get your Maroon Bells reservations here .

Other things to do in Aspen include the Silver Queen Gondola, drive Independence Pass, visit the Ashcroft Ghost Town, and of course, shopping and dining in Aspen.

So whether you’re making the fall foliage in Aspen the focus of your trip or you’re combining it with an epic Colorado road trip , Aspen will surely be a highlight for a fall vacation!

23. New York City, New York

New York City skyline with pink sky and buildings lit up

Average temp:  high 64, low 50

New York City is amongst the best places to spend fall in the United States. The city is known for its beautiful fall colors and even a bit of Indian summer if you’re lucky.

New York can get very hot during the summer so the fall is the perfect time to enjoy the city without the heat. Fall is a lot more comfortable for sightseeing and you’ll love the views of the city.

If you’re traveling with older kids, this New York weekend itinerary with teens is the perfect mix of activities.

Head to the Highline Park which is a former elevated railroad track that has been converted into a walkway. It’s the perfect way to see the city without having to deal with the traffic and busy streets!

For an even better view of the city, you need to go all the way to the top of the One World Trade Center . This modern skyscraper is a must-see and truly the best place to take pictures of the city.

Afterward, head to the river for an evening cruise. There are tourist boats that will take you around the Hudson and East River.

However, for a more affordable option just take the ferry to Jersey or Staten Island. The ride won’t be as long but tickets only cost a few dollars and you’ll get to avoid the tourist crowds.

A trip to New York City is one of the best October vacations USA and one you’ll remember for a lifetime!

24. Zion National Park, Utah (another favorite on this list of best places to travel in October in USA)

Zion national park large canyon looking down with trees and road best places to visit in October USA

Average temp:  high 66, low 39

Zion National Park is simply stunning any time of year. However, it’s especially amazing to visit this national park in the fall.  With dwindled crowds and less intense weather to worry about, Zion is a great idea for a fall vacatio n!

If you want to hike the infamous Angels Landing, advanced planning is required, as the permit application process is during the summer. But, if you happen to get a permit for the hike, October is a phenomenal time to do it!

Of course, there are many things to do in Zion without hiking this challenging trail.  The much easier and yet equally rewarding Canyon Overlook Trail is a fun one, and can be completed for most fitness levels . At just a mile, this trail offers absolutely incredible views of the park!

A place for all ages, this park is magnificent for those young and old. An itinerary for Zion with kids includes other simple hikes like the Riverside Walk. Go further into the canyon by hiking The Narrows!

If you’re looking for a scenic drive in October, the Zion Mt. Carmel Highway Scenic Drive is incredible.  You won’t get the traditional vivid colors like some of the other destinations on this list of the best places to visit in October in US, but instead you’ll get amazing desert landscape and massive canyon views. So fun!

Be sure to pack plenty of water, layers for varying weather, hiking snacks and hiking gear like grippy hiking shoes , trekking poles and a hiking backpack .

Zion is absolutely one of the best places to go in October in USA, and a spot you’ll love!

25. Las Vegas, Nevada

best places in US to visit in October - Las Vegas strip with tall buildings at sunset

Average temp:  high 83, low 46

Las Vegas is the perfect destination to visit all year round but fall is a great time to visit. Temperatures begin to cool after the summer and so do the crowds. Plus, visiting mid-week will get you cheaper hotel rates, too.

Because temperatures are cooler, it means you can take advantage of some of the best outdoor attractions in the city, perfect for those visiting  Las Vegas for the first time .

Enjoy a Gondola ride at The Venetian, watch the Bellagio fountains or watch the volcano erupt outside The Mirage.

Rent a car or join a tour to visit the nearby national parks; Grand Canyon is the most popular day trip option from Las Vegas but October is a fantastic time to visit Death Valley, Red Rock Canyon and Bryce Canyon.

Alternatively, head to the unusual Magic Mountains or explore ‘The Neon Museum’ , a gallery of old signage from Vegas hotels of the past.

In the Bellagio hotel, you’ll find the gorgeous Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. This is one of the best free things to do in Las Vegas and a great indoor activity to enjoy.

Each season, the gardens get transformed and the fall display is the most breathtaking. Expect oversized pumpkins, woodland creatures and tall, entertaining trees.

For more natural fall colours, head to one of the nearby parks ; Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, Paseo Verde Park and Gilcrease Orchard are top choices for this time of the year.

We recommend staying at The Cosmopolitan; it’s an elegant, stunning hotel and rates are normally super high but drop during the Autumn time.

26. Washington DC (Rock Creek Park)

Average temp:  high 69, low 46

Washingtonians and visitors don’t even have to hop in a car to enjoy peak fall foliage in a forest. Rock Creek Park is situated in the nation’s capital.

It’s the nation’s third oldest national park. Rock Creek Park was authorized in 1890.

Come October, the oaks, American beech and tulip trees suddenly change into the colors of the sunset—golden, orange and red. The 1,754-acre park features hikes for the hardcore as well as weekend adventurer.

If time permits, hike the two primary trails – Western Ridge Trail and Valley Trail. They run side by side. Imagine walking along a ladder laid on the ground.

Half-day hikes include Boulder Bridge, Milkhouse Ford, Rapids Bridge and Chestnut Oak/Mountain Laurels.

Or, devote a fall weekend to exploring Rock Creek Park . Tramp around the Civil War fortifications, watch interpreters at the Peirce Mill and Barn and visit the horses.

Bring a carrot or pull on your boots to ride a horse at the Rock Creek Park Horse Center, which is the only public riding facility in Washington DC.

Families will definitely want to visit the Nature Center and Planetarium. There are picnic areas scattered across Rock Creek Park, so fill a basket with ciders, sandwiches and apples.

27. Siesta Key, Florida (another favorite warm place to visit in October in USA)

Average temp:  high 85, low 67

A Florida beach may not come to the top of mind when thinking about the best October vacation destinations. However, it’s the perfect time to go! And what better way to end this list than one of the top-ranked beaches in the USA!

Siesta Key, Florida is home to turquoise water and some of the finest white powder sand you’ll ever step foot on. While you won’t see much fall foliage here, you’ll see wide open beaches and affordable prices, compared to the peak summer season and those looking for a winter escape.

Fall is the ideal time to visit Siesta Key. The weather is very comfortable and the water is still warm enough to enjoy.

From excellent restaurants, shopping, kayaking and beaching, there’s seriously so many things to do in Siesta Key. Whether you’re looking for a fall getaway as a couple, family, solo or friends trip, you’ll love spending time in Siesta Key!

While a bit unconventional in terms of fall colors, this is still one of the best places to visit in October in the USA.

28. New Orleans, Louisiana

city streets of New Orleans at night with blurred people and lights

Average temp:  high 81, low 62

New Orleans is one of the top warm places to visit in October in USA. It’s a fantastic walking city so it’s an ideal location to visit in the fall when the summer weather has cooled a bit and the crowds have left.

New Orleans is a very family friendly city , even in the French Quarter, or a great destination for a romantic getaway or a fun girls’ or boy’s weekend.

A trip to New Orleans wouldn’t be complete without exploring the French Quarter. Here you can aimlessly walk along cobblestone streets, poking your head into cute shops, or eating your way through delicious food.

One of the must-try treats is a beignet, a cross between a french pastry and a doughnut. They are easily found in the French Quarter.

If you’re curious about the history of this area, take one of the many walking tours that will ultimately take you to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Here you will learn all about the ghosts, the after-life and even voodoo, themes found all over New Orleans.

A fantastic experience is visiting the National WWII Museum, a short walk from the French Quarter.

This is an exceptional interactive museum that focuses on the United States’ role in Asia and Europe during WWII. It’s a thrilling experience that will grab the attention of anyone even those that aren’t normally interested in history or wars.

There are countless exciting activities to do within a short drive of New Orleans. You can visit a plantation, like Oak Alley Plantation, and learn about slavery and a difficult part of US history. The drive there is beautiful and exploring the grounds is a lovely thing to do in the fall.

In addition, you can take a swamp tour which is a lot of fun. You hop on a bayou boat and explore some of the many surrounding swamps filled with crocodiles and other wild creatures.

October is the perfect time of year to visit New Orleans due to the cooling weather and reasonable crowds.

25 Top-Rated Attractions & Places to Visit in Oregon

Written by Brad Lane Updated Aug 1, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Oregon is a state of adventurous landscapes. From the coast to the mountains and the Oregon high desert, vacations to the state traverse all types of terrain. The multitude of places to visit and things to do in Oregon can make planning a getaway overwhelming until you have a complete picture of everything Oregon offers.

View along the Pacific Coast Highway in Oregon

A few beautiful places in Oregon include an ancient lake created by a volcanic eruption, a luscious gorge streaming with waterfalls, and several impressive sea stacks jutting out of the ocean. These scenic attractions are spread throughout the state, leading to memorable road trips and excursions.

In addition to its natural beauty, Oregon is equally known for its urban charms. The state's largest city, Portland, has an international reputation for drawing tourists with an offbeat and welcoming culture. The top things to do in Portland range from visiting rose gardens and art museums to browsing an immense bookshop. And this cultural capital is only one of many of the best cities in Oregon .

Plan your summer or winter trip to Oregon with our list of the top attractions and places to visit.

1. Crater Lake National Park

2. columbia river gorge national scenic area, 3. cannon beach, 4. washington park, portland, 5. mount hood national forest, 8. hood river, 9. samuel h. boardman state scenic corridor, brookings, 10. smith rock state park, terrebonne, 11. oregon shakespeare festival, ashland, 12. newport, 13. sisters, 14. silver falls state park, sublimity, 15. depoe bay, 16. newberry national volcanic monument, 17. klamath falls, 18. oregon dunes national recreation area, 19. hells canyon national recreation area, 20. oregon coast trail, 21. willamette national forest, 22. willamette heritage center at the mill, salem, 23. jordan schnitzer museum of art, eugene, 24. oregon caves national monument and preserve, 25. medford.

Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake National Park lies in the Cascade Mountains of southwestern Oregon. Its landscape is like nowhere else. It's not actually a crater but rather an ancient caldera of an extinct volcano, Mount Mazama, which erupted over 7,000 years ago. Today, lava cliffs rise 2,000 feet around the sky-blue, seemingly bottomless lake.

The easiest way to see and visit Crater Lake is along Rim Drive , circumnavigating the entire lake. The route begins at Rim Village , home to the Crater Lake Lodge and Rim Village Visitor Center. Rim Drive is only drivable in the warm weather months (typically mid-July to Mid-October). Snowshoers and cross-country skiers utilize the unplowed road for winter travel throughout winter.

Crater Lake National Park is home to some of Oregon's best hiking trails . Stunning trails like Watchman Peak give great views of the caldera, while more moderate options stem from Rim Village via paved sidewalks. And extended hiking and backpacking opportunities, including the country-spanning Pacific Crest Trail, present themselves away from the rim.

To access the water in the summer, head to Cleetwood Cove , where cruises depart for Wizard Island. Camping is also available at two developed campgrounds, with most sites found at the Mazama Campground , located in the Mazama Village.

Southern Oregon has a lot more to explore outside the national park. Crater Lake is surrounded by wild places like Umpqua National Forest and Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest , featuring hundreds of more miles of hiking trails to explore. And Crater Lake is at the northern end of the spectacular 500-mile, state-spanning Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway .

Crater Lake National Park - Floor plan map

The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area follows the course of the Columbia River as it cuts through the Cascade Range. This stunning river gorge is the boundary line between Oregon and Washington. It falls within a thirty-minute drive from Portland and is best known for its spectacular views and numerous waterfalls.

Traveling along the Historic Columbia River Highway through the gorge offers a slower pace than the adjacent Interstate 84. This historic corridor has several roadside attractions and is a popular route to explore via bicycle.

The tallest waterfall in the state, Multnomah Falls, is perhaps the most iconic display of gravity in the Columbia River Gorge. Alongside a dazzling two-tier waterfall, the area around Multnomah offers a range of hiking and biking trails, plus camping facilities . It's also home to the historic Multnomah Falls Lodge , built in 1925, and is still a popular place to dine or stay the night.

Multnomah Falls is one of the most popular day trips from Portland , but not even close to the only waterfall to check out in the gorge. One of the many other great destinations to aim for is Punchbowl Falls on Eagle Creek. This iconic waterfall doesn't drop anywhere close to the same distance as Multnomah Falls, but it arguably leaves an even better impression.

Author's Tip : New Time Use Permits have been in place for the past few years, requiring visitors to reserve parking spots during peak visiting season (May 26 th – September 4 th ). You can bypass the need for a permit with different transportation means. Check out all the options with the From Portland to Multnomah Falls: 5 Best Ways to Get There guide.

Haystack Rock

Cannon Beach is a popular tourist destination on the northern Oregon coast with a vast stretch of sand and spectacular views of jagged coastal rocks. Haystack Rock is the largest of these sea stacks and is a constant presence during any visit to this coastal community.

Alongside spectacular ocean scenery, Cannon Beach also delivers cultural appeal with restaurants, boutique shops, and great hotels. This combination of culture, community, and ocean access earns Cannon Beach its reputation as one of the best small towns on the Oregon Coast ,

To the north of Cannon Beach, the enchanting Ecola State Park and Tillamook Head encompass historic and scenic landscapes to explore, including a trail that follows the path of Lewis and Clark. The charming city of Seaside is on the other end of Ecola State Park, offering more days of family-friendly travel along the coast.

Portland Japanese Garden in Washington Park, Portland

Portland offers a bevy of delightful parks and gardens, but none has quite the density of attractions as Washington Park. Within park grounds, the famed International Rose Test Garden is located near the impressive Portland Japanese Garden . Both display exceptional horticultural expertise and are favorites with green thumbs.

Washington Park is also home to the Oregon Zoo , Hoyt Arboretum , World Forestry Center Discovery Museum , and a popular Rose Garden Children's Playground . And even without these attractions, Pacific Northwest splendor imbues the entire park with a dense landscape of foliage and nature.

The park is also next to the expansive Forest Park , encompassing approximately 1,300 acres, and home to some of the best hiking trails in the Portland area . Plan to spend the whole day exploring this urban respite in the middle of the city.

Author's Tip : Parking is scarce in parts of Washington Park, particularly nearest the International Rose Test Garden and Portland Japanese Garden. A free Washington Park shuttle operates within the park daily between April and September, and several public transit options bridge the gap between downtown and the park.
