Not only was he our guide, we got a crash course on the nearby mountains (His hidden talent is that he knows them all by name), plant identification ( which my herbalist husband loved) and healing crystal collection. Apparently the trail has loads of Jasper, Agate, Quartz and a bunch of other crystals we usually pay money for in store! The trail was absolutely BEAUTIFUL, I mean I honestly have no words. We'd never driven a Can-am before and it was one hell of a ride. These things ride as smooth as Cadillacs yet still give you the rush of zooming down bumpy terrain. I'm pretty sure we'll be buying one of our own in the future. All in all, ASK FOR TYLER! He kept us laughing the entire time and shot some EPIC photos of us with an insane backdrop. Thank you so much Tyler, we thoroughly enjoyed spending the afternoon with you and will definitely be booking with you again in the future. We rented 4 machines total and rode directly from their Cohasset location. The machines were in great shape and the scenery was fantastic. Put 60 miles on them riding in the Ishi wilderness. Great family adventure.

Chico Offroad Rentals is about as real as you can get with their customer service. They answer all your questions, big and small, understand your concerns, etc... The gentlemen working behind the desk and out in the shop treat you like a friend. They're real people! We had no issues with our rentals, taking them out, bringing them back was a breeze. Our company trip was easy going thanks to Chico Offroad Rentals!

Easily a 5 star 7 days a week service department. Never a waiting list or were two weeks out it’s bring it to me and will work you in. Ben is very thorough and you actually get a phone call with an update. Thank for keeping my can-am going and running a great professional shop.

This was my first time riding/driving a UTV and it was really fun. Easy to pickup as you can go at your own pace. The lake trail had a combination of smooth/open and rough/rocky terrain. The views were gorgeous! Bring plenty of water and snacks.

We attended a group ride that was coordinated by Chico and their team, we went through the rubicon in a few days, stopping at a few lakes on the way and camping each night. We had an absolutely amazing time, they know what their doing, are excellent when it comes to unexpected mechanical issues or helping spot new drivers to assist in overcoming obstacles and just having good ol clean fun! I highly recommend them!

The Playground

The OHV Park is an area consisting of nearly 100,000 acres of open trails – talk about a playground prime for the outdoor enthusiast.

Johnson Valley is just North of the San Bernardino Mountains in the Mojave high desert region with an average elevation more than 3,000 feet.

The Landscape

A varied landscape is punctuated by vast valleys, sand dunes, large dry lake beds, sandy washes and massive rocky buttes. Vegetation consists mostly of Joshua trees, creosote scrub, and wild flowers that bloom with a rainbow of color in the spring time.

Are there age requirements to drive or be a passenger?

Minimum age to rent and drive is 26 with a valid driver’s license. However, licensed drivers between 18 to 25 years old are allowed to drive only if they are accompanied by their parent in the same vehicle at the same time (no exceptions).

In order to be a passenger you must be able to sit in the seat, with your feet flat on the floor, back against the seat and your hands firmly on the hand hold.  While we do not enforce a strict height requirement, typically if an individual is about 54 inches tall, they will fit and be able to ride. Minors must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian. All participants are required to wear a helmet with goggles (helmet and goggles provided to borrower during your rental period) and wear closed-toe shoes at all times while in the vehicle. Happy Trails Rental reserves the right to refuse service to anyone, even those meeting the qualifications above, based on our sole discretion.

What is the difference between Self-Guided GPS Tour Rentals and Private Guided Tours?

Self-Guided GPS Tour options are ideal for customers who want to use the aid of our sophisticated GPS technology and follow pre-planned routes to exciting destinations. Self-Guided GPS Tours are perfect for the novice rider who wants to enjoy their riding experience at their own pace to allow time to stop and take in the beautiful scenery. Book directly on-line at our website by selecting the “Book Now” button.

Private Guided Tours are also available if you want to play follow-the-leader on your trail adventure and experience the Mojave desert in a unique way with an expert trail guide. We offer both day tours and special Sunset and Stargazing tours. Call us for pricing and reservations.

Are you allowed to camp in Johnson Valley?

Primitive camping is allowed anywhere within the boundaries of the Johnson Valley OHV Area, except on private property and established dirt roads. There are also a few vault bathrooms located on Anderson Dry Lake and on the north side of Cougar Buttes. Responsible camp fires are allowed, however do not burn wood with nails (pallets prohibited). The burning of potentially hazardous materials e.g. (but not limited to) gas, oil, plastic and magnesium is strictly prohibited. Please avoid building new fire rings. Federally protected desert tortoises are located in the OHV area so please be vigilant to stay away from these protected tortoises. Johnson Valley OHV is managed by Bureau of Land Management, Barstow Field Office, 2601 Barstow Road, Barstow, CA 92311, (760) 252-6000.

Orientation & Prep Area

1.5 - 2 Hour Drive From LA or OC

Experience ATV rental Orange County in an unforgettable off-roading adventure as you and your group follow the tour guide on a 19-to-42 mile tour through the Mojave Desert's wildly diverse terrain.  We are located in Helendale California, but nearby counties include Orange County, Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County, San Diego County, & Riverside County.  

Drive some of Can Am's most extreme off-roading vehicles during the day OR at night!  These off-road vehicles are commonly known as Side-By-Sides or UTVs (and provide much more protection and safety than a traditional ATV). 

Our popular Jackrabbit Tour comes with 19, 25, or 42 mile options. Don't expect flat dirt trails for this tour.  Riding ATV rental Orange County California, Anticipate twists and turns, ups & downs, and uneven terrain with loose or hard packed sand.  Fauna seen on this tour include: lizards, squirrels, jackrabbits, snakes, desert tortoises, and foxes (from most to least common).  We can accommodate group sizes from 1 to 9 people.  Day or Night tours available.

If you have a little more time, our Kramer Hills Tour is quite an experience.  Similar to our Jackrabbit Tour in regards to the variety of terrain and fauna, this tour also includes many Joshua Trees and a few small mountain climbs.  One of the mountain climbs has a 3,350 foot elevation with an incredible view.  This tour is currently available for 2-3 people max and is only available during the day.  

We use the latest technology from Sena, the 30K headset.  These headsets let you have a real-time intercom experience with everyone on the tour even if they are in a separate vehicle.  Helmets are equipped with built-in sunglasses for bright, mid-day tours.

Hop on your own ATV and enjoy an adventurous, memorable thrill ride through our woods! Running Horse Ranch offers a challenging Off Road Trail leading you through some bumpy, rugged canyons, by spectacular mountain views and desert peaks.

For your convenience: All our machines have an electric start and are equipped automatically. Everyone will be provided with important safety rules while attending a short class, and practicing detailed driving instructions before we take off onto our charming maze of trails.

WE ENFORCE SAFETY RULES for everyone: If you looking for a memorable outdoor adventure thrill, having fun- exploring a part of Californias stunning wilderness, you welcome to join and ride our challenging, bold trails.

NO ACROBATIC STUNTS ARE ALLOWED, OR ANY FORM OF AGGRESSIVE DRIVING!

Great for beginners, however, our trail entertains also experienced riders as we have very technical terrain options- for skilled riders.

Your ride will be one hour , count 40 minutes additional for instructions. Please keep in mind as larger your group, so longer your instruction and preparation will take.

All our rides take off on our training road’s and lead later into more advanced technical terrain, depending on how well our riders learn to ride safe enough on some challenging grounds. Jacket, Sweats Rental Rates: for guests which have no protection for cold weather: 5$

Directions to Running Horse Ranch ( Take a picture of directions provided below ):

• dress in long jeans, ankle covering with fully closed shoes!  and something with long arms
• Bring Sunglasses: will protect you from the sun and dusk
• We provide, helmets, and gloves
• Bring your water or any other drinks to stay hydrated
• have breakfast, or something to eat- don’t come hungry

HOW DO I BOOK? please send a text, or call with your date, time, how many people: We use Zelle to secure deposits.

A half down deposit reserves your time slot only until three days prior your ride! The final payment is due three days prior your ride date. If you don’t pay on time your final payment, we assume that your party has no longer interest and we will give your spot possibly to another group. There is no refund

Write in the note section: your name, phone number, date, time, how many people, and which tour you wish to book: ATV, or Horse. Also write “I have read the booking rules and accept the terms”.

Your Final Payment is due three days prior to your arrival. Please make sure you set a reminder, as we don’t send reminders out.

PLEASE READ Booking Rules and make everyone in your party aware of payment rules:

Be aware, once you paid your deposit and we have you booked, there is no cancelation possible- for anyone in your party! We reserve that particular time slot for your party until three days prior your ride.  The final payment is due three days prior the tour. If you don’t pay on time- we assume your party maybe canceled the trip to LA and we wont be available for your time slot. We need the second payment from everyone in full for your reservation, even if some ppl in your party change their mind about going riding.

You can also pay the full amount and just show up to your appointment, but in those harder times we want to give ppl the opportunity to have easier payment options.

 Appointments can’t be switched around, as we have a lot of inquiries each day, which were mostly booked weeks in advance. Be on time for your scheduled appointment, if you want to ride- your paid full hour! 

We recommend highly once you booked- please take a picture with your phone, of the written directions above, as there is a possibility that you will loose internet connection for about three miles( Google Maps)coming out to the ranch. It will lead you easily to the ranch and you won’t be frustrated if you lost your internet connection, driving around in our mountains to find Running Horse Ranch.

If you bring young people under 18 years of age, and you are not a guardian, you must bring from a parents a signed waiver release form and a copy of the drivers license.

It made me feel like I was in a Cars movie, driving down the scenic California mountains. Our guide, Caine, was considerate and sweet as he navigated us through the road safely. We were given helmets that each included a headset to talk to the group on our ride. He was through guide as he informed us the next upcoming break or if there were bicyclist, cars, motor cyclists up ahead. Would highly recommend to anyone this was such a fun way to explore and experience a different side of California! Majestic Mountain Adventure (3 hours): There are several breaks throughout the journey. On the way up the mountain there are 2 breaks before we reached the top of Mount Baldy. At Mount Baldy, you get about 15-30 min break to go to the restroom, explore the small part of Mount, visit the inside of the restaurant, or walk along the road to take pictures. On our way down there were about 1-2 breaks. It feels pretty fast even though you're going around 20-30 mph up and down Mount Baldy. So don't be afraid to let your guide know that you need the group to slow down or coordinate on the speed. On our last break down the mountain, Caine passed around some sweet treats before we concluded the trip. Tip: Two people party. I would recommend sharing one ride and switch on the breaks. I would say that there was plenty enough time to experience driving a Ryker from the three hour journey. It's hard to experience the breathtaking views as you're very focused staying on the road.

Mount Baldy Nov 2023

Wonderful experience with fresh air and beautiful scenes! The Rykers were easy to ride and very comfortable in the front seat. Back seat kind of small and not very comfortable!

A group of us did the morning mountain tour and we had such a blast driving the Rykers!! We were blessed with such a beautiful morning - where the skies were clear, sun was shining, and the views were stunning!! We had Adam as our tour lead and Brian as our shepherd. Tom from Ohio, if you're reading this, can we exchange group pics for your 360 footage? Hahaha

I have to definitely give this experience 5 stars. Definitely want to try this again. The Can Am Rykers were perfect to maneuver around the winding mountain roads. Fun and exciting! Our Guide, Caine, was Awesome. Knowledgeable and funny! He really made our ride entertaining. There were amazing views. Always something to look at.

Absolutely legit! Completely exceeded my expectations. I completely surprised my wife as she loves motorbikes. This was amazing for both of us. I have to say that Brian was our team's lead and that made it even more memorable. He's very humble and hardworking. Very few business owners are actively involved in the daily operations and this is why it is a huge success. At first I was apprehensive at all the 5 star reviews however they hold true. My experience was authentic and I have already told my friends and family about it. We shall be back for another adventure soon. Shout out to Caine as he helped us out getting acquainted with everything. Brian's safety training was vital and very easy to remember and follow. His tips and continued guidance made it fun. I am more confident and plan to return back for another adventure for sure!

Had an absolute blast riding Rykers through the mountains! These things are insanely intuitive, easy to ride, and feel like you're driving a sports car! The trip began at CaliRide headquarters where the check-in process is super convenient. Check out the merch, take some pictures, and have some coffee while your group checks in. After everyone is geared up, you mount your Ryker, watch a safety video, and have an opportunity to get a feel for the ride on a practice route. Once everyone is comfortable with maneuvering, which by the way, is super easy (acceleration from the right handlebar, brake on the right side like a car), you're off to your ride through the mountains! We stopped at a couple picturesque locations on the route, had lunch at Mount Baldy Lodge Restaurant (great menu), and had an amazing ride back. Highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for an adventure in the area! I'll definitely do this ride again!

CaliRide is a great experience that'll take you up the winding roads, with nothing but beautiful views and fun riding. Our group was laughing and had so much fun the whole time! The little diner was a nice place for lunch. It was very tasty and had great portions so not packing a lunch worked out well. Make sure to pay attention to the safety video in the beginning, it's got a lot of helpful hints on controlling the Ryker. Bring some sunglasses and a jacket, it can get chilly.

Had such an incredible day riding the brand new CanAm Rykers up and down the backroads of Angeles National Forest! The team at CaliRides was extremely helpful and provided us with a wild adventure! I was a little nervous to drive up the winding roads at first, but quickly realized how easy it was to drive the Ryker. Feels like you're driving a small car or go kart. Anyone could do it! We had headsets on our helmets so we could talk to the group and guides throughout the ride which had us laughing the entire time! One of the highlights was our Ryker gang driving on the main roads next to all the regular cars. Everyone wanted to know how they could join in on the fun! Definitely recommend this for adrenaline junkies looking for a unique experience! Also... the views were RIDICULOUS!

Today was such a blast! It was a great adventure with friends up to Mt Baldy. The bikes rode great and were pretty easy to learn. Beautiful scenery the whole day. 10/10 would recommend!

It was a blast! This guided tour by Caliride made it so easy for me as a first time riding Can-Am Ryker. Adam was a great tour guide and knowledgeable of the area. Definitely I recommend this experience to everyone specially couples that just want to get out for an adventure.
