Video: Themba Robin's satire on potholes in South Africa goes viral

The video “A truly South African Safari” by local comedian Themba Robin has gone viral.

A recent video in which Robin takes his audience on an “urban safari” riddled with potholes has received millions of views across multiple social media platforms.

Robin does emphasise that potholes are extinct in one SA province – the Western Cape!

The hilarious video pushes two campaigns to save tyres #savematayas and #wakeup.

Watch the video below:

Judging by the comments, the entertaining video addresses an issue most South Africans can relate to.

See some comments below:

  • “Today I had to use my indicator to go around one. I think they are mutating.”
  • “This is just too funny. Very well done .”
  • “I think this family is stalking me. They’re everywhere I go.”
  • “ Brilliant. Arriving back in Boksburg after the holidays, I said to my wife, “do you realize we never or hardly saw potholes in Cape Town?” Before she could answer I just heard “pasop potholes!” and low and behold the entire family of potholds were in front of me. Fortunately I went through without touching 1 of the family members of potholes. Ja ne. “

‘A single pothole can reproduce faster than two horny rabbits’ – hilarious pothole video goes viral

Potholes, like load shedding have become a norm south africans are slowly, but angrily, getting used to. a video going viral has brought some humour to the pothole pandemic..

South Africa’s electricity infrastructure is not the only thing crumbling, our roads are in equally bad shape, and when Mzansi’s middle class are not paying for diesel to cook dinner, they’re getting quotes for new tires when the lights and cell phone signal comes back on.

But like always, South Africans seem to find the humour in any ‘k*k’ situation thrown at them to put a smile on the rest of their people’s miserable faces.

Pothole video goes viral

South African voice artist, actor, MC and content creator, Themba Robin , took to social media to make light of a very frustrating situation in South Africa – potholes .

The video, which has already garnered almost 84 000 views not only provided South Africans with some laughter, but lead to some Johannesburg potholes being fixed.

Edenvale’s roads again thrust into spotlight

“I returned to where I shot the #pothole video a few days ago, my prayers have been answered. #JRA at work,” the actor tweeted on Tuesday afternoon.

Robin’s pothole video comes hot on the heels of Sanral denying that South Africa has 25 million potholes.

In the video, Robin can be seen appearing from behind a bush in his khakis next to a road riddled with potholes. In a David Attenborough impression he welcomes viewers to the urban safari.

“Standing behind me is a family of South African potholes, scientifically named the replicis mytyresis every f**king weekis ,” he explains while zooming into one of the water-filled potholes.

The video delves further into this new South African species, only extinct in the Western Cape , according to Robin. He then explains why this species of pothole is so superior to other potholes in the world.

“It has two secret weapons. It has learnt to take advantage of a crumbling infrastructure and lazy repair work. This coupled with the fact that it is asexual, means a single pothole can reproduce faster than two horny rabbits in a field full of horny rabbits,” Robin explains while hunching down next to a pothole, looking intensely at the camera.

The remaining 30 seconds of the video really brings out the giggles as the content creator talks about the fact that potholes have no natural predators and is thus free to pray on small to medium sized vehicles such as the i20, Fiestas and Polos.

Connect with local communities

There is more to an African safari than watching wildlife in the wilderness – and much more to Africa as well. We have made a specialty of curating Urban Safaris for travellers intrigued by the culture of our continent, with transformative opportunities for guests to connect with local communities along the way. According to recent reports, contemporary travellers seek profound experiences to enhance their emotional intelligence, pushing beyond their comfort zones to interact with local communities and gain deeper appreciation for people and their cultures around the world.

Africa is prime territory for such interactions, with cities unfolding as thriving cultural centers of incredible diversity offering a vibrancy, creativity, great food, and warm welcome all their own. Far from mere stopovers en route to exploring the bush, they are being rediscovered as destinations for immersive travel.

Often noted as one of the best cities for travel, Cape Town has it all: natural splendor, textured culture and history, world-class galleries and entertainment, outdoor pursuits, and well-deserved renown as the culinary and wine capital of Africa. Start your Urban Safari with a vintage side car ride from the center of the city, traveling through coastal towns en route to Miller’s Point where a local ‘eco-warrior’ will create a wildly delicious adventure tracking the edible landscape, with local flavors from wild mushrooms to seaweeds and shellfish. Back in the city, ride bikes through the V&A Waterfront to the Oranjezicht City Farm Market, where one can taste produce and products from local artisans and meet the vibrant duo who brought the market to life. A Sunday Jazz Brunch on the seaside promenade is a great plan, as is ending the day by watching or joining in a salsa dance class at the Sea Point Pavilion. Learn to Gum Boot Dance, as once practiced by mineworkers or picnic at world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens with a private guided tour, or join a local on a walking tour of the history of South African cuisine, from African Soul Food to Rose Milkshakes, boerewors to bobotie pie.

Johannesburg

Founded during a gold rush and built by adventurers, the sense of pioneering is part of the rich tapestry of the people and experiences of ‘Jozi,’ as South Africa’s largest city is known. Join two brothers – one an artist, the other a political analyst – as they weave together the city’s art scene and political history on a tour of galleries and significant historical sites. Enjoy an insider’s experience of Jozi’s most beloved townships, with a visit to an art studio/gallery that doubles as a music venue, with highlights such as sipping a ‘gemmerbier’ in a local home and playing basketball with kids in a youth social uplift program. See why Ponte City – the iconic, brutalist residential apartment building that dominates the skyline – has gone from symbol of urban decay to a high point of the renaissance sweeping South Africa, complete with a run up 900-plus stairs to the 54th floor – if you can make it.

Previously tarnished by profound tragedy, Rwanda’s elegant capital has been reinventing itself for a quarter century and now radiates African charm. Clean, safe, and wonderfully lush, the city is known for excellent coffee, basket weaving and a lively night life. Kigali is also leading the tech revolution of East Africa, and as the gateway for gorilla trekking. The streets are filled with young students, well-dressed professionals, and a sense of purpose, with low crime, a vibrant dining scene, and friendly locals. Start at Nyamirambo Women’s Center, which provides education and vocational training for women to gain better opportunities, where guests transform colorful kitenge fabric into dazzling souvenirs. Enjoy dinner at Heaven restaurant, whose owner, Josh Ruxin, wrote A Thousand Hills to Heaven: Love, Hope and a Restaurant in Rwanda. Visit a humble Rwandan home transformed into a colorful museum featuring works by local artists who share profits to aid and train local street children in traditional music, drumming, and dance. Shop at Go Kigali, offering the best ‘Made-in-Rwanda’ products from more than 50 designers.

Africa’s fastest-changing urban landscape glimmers with ultra-modern business ventures and endless diversions. Discover a true mix of wilderness and modernity in Kenya’s vast capital, which counts more than 400 species of birds offset by skyscrapers and passing airplanes. The hub of East Africa economically, socially, and influentially, Nairobi is full of life, with a people known for their entrepreneurship and fashion sense. Adopt an elephant at the local Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage, the first organization in the world to successfully raise milk-dependent orphaned elephants by hand and reintegrate them back into the wild. Visit Kunoa Trust, a cool workspace shared by artists and graphic designers where people buy art. Tour Brown’s Cheese, Kenya’s biggest cheese maker, followed by a delicious lunch with wine pairings. And don’t miss a chance to eat with your hands at Nyama Mama, an unpretentious, modern-day roadside diner serving meals full or a visit to the Kazuri Bead Factory.

DAR ES SALAAM

“Dar” is a thriving seaside metropolis and the commercial hub of Tanzania. Developed from a sleepy fishing village, today it’s East Africa’s second-busiest port along one of the world’s most important oceanic routes. The urban fabric of the city is highly decorative, with Arabic, African, Indian, and European architecture lining the streets. The people are as eclectic as the urban fabric, with many styles of dress, varieties of culture, and corresponding eateries and experiences making it easy for travelers to lose themselves in abundant markets, colorful happenings, and noisy, jostling crowds. A short boat trip takes one to palm-fringed beaches of nearby islands, where nothing compares to relaxing and enjoying sundowners from gracious homes while looking back on the city lights twinkling at dusk. Take a street-food tour of the city’s best fare, and visit the Mwenge Craft Market to watch artists make crafts to be sold throughout the country. Nafasi Art Space is aiming to become the country’s leading contemporary art center, providing a platform for training and cross-cultural discourse. If you’re visiting in September, don’t miss Dar’s famous Goat Race.

urban safari potholes

Set exactly halfway between Cairo and Cape Town, Arusha, Tanzania represents the middle of the Old British Empire marked by a monumental clock tower. Lush and green throughout the year thanks to it’s high altitude, the city’s population comprises more than 100 nationalities, creating a melting pot of Iraqe, Hazabe, Maasai, Swahili, and dozens of other indigenous and ethnic cultures. Expect to be spoiled by the wealth of no-frills street food at places such as Discovery Restaurant serving Nyama Choma (roasted meat and maize), and Khan’s BBQ with ‘Chicken on the Bonnet’. Arusha is also a great place for volunteering, with many opportunities for visitors to do charity work while traveling. Visit Meserani Snake Park to learn about some of the most dangerous snakes in the world, from Black and Green Mamba to Puff Adders, and check out crocodiles at feeding time with chance to touch a baby crocodile. Don’t miss a meal at the eco-restaurant Eat Wild in the Themi Living Gardens, a leafy spot run by a women’s community project.

The Urban Safari Rescue Society is a registered non-profit society dedicated to the rescue and care of exotic animals and to educating the public about animals, their environments and the natural world.

Our charity number: 80757 1047 RR0002  Our society number: S-0061328

Urban Safari Rescue Society was conceived from Cinemazoo in 2007 by Gary Oliver as an effort to make a difference in the lives of people and animals alike. Gary has dedicated his life to learning about, working with, and rescuing animals. It is his belief animal education programs about all kinds of animals will ultimately make a difference in the lives of animals in captivity and in the wild.

Some of the animals we rescue are near the bottom of the food chain, but without them, all other forms of life as we know it would slowly disappear. Saving these animals provides us with a unique opportunity to have them as living ambassadors in our outreach and in-house animal welfare education . Teaching people about animal conservation efforts is the priority, especially given the reality of today’s world of vanishing habitats and species.

Our Mission

To Rescue , care for, and maintain the health of rescued exotic pets and other animals.

To Educate children and adults about various animal species and the importance of all animals to our environment, the need for conservation, and the responsibilities that come with exotic animal ownership.

To Provide public awareness of worldwide animal conservation efforts and encourage people to take an active role in those efforts.

For our latest news, visit our Rescue Report page .

While foreigners might believe that Mzansi people have lions as pets, the truth is that some are not even big fans of wildlife at all.

Mzansi people make it clear that large angry animals are not their vibe

Yup, elephants are beautiful, but TikTok is as close as many people are getting to those majestic beasts. Many people claimed that their life would have instantly ended if an elephant charged at them like that.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
