We are currently planning/thinking of days out that we would like to experience during our stay. We are particularly interested in visiting Pompeii/Vesuvius, Capri/Anacapri and the Amalfi Coast . So far we have budgeted for the TUI excursions but have heard these are sometimes a lot more expensive compared to other tours. I was just wondering if anyone had experienced any of these; if so is it worth the money? After reading other posts I have seen that you can book to go on tours when you are out there with your TUI rep at your hotel - are these cheaper than paying online before hand?

Sometimes, if you book three excursions you get a fourth free, or something like that but they may have stopped doing it. I think Goldentours still do it. The only cheaper excursions, that I know of, have no hotel pick up. Some excursions operate from Sorrento bus/train station and they can be cheaper, again with no hotel pick up.

However, it can be cheaper doing the trips DIY. For example, two local trains go from Sorrento bus/train station to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples and cost peanuts. The Campania Express train is the best, tends not to get overcrowded or attract pickpockets, but it's not frequent. You can join a guided tour at the entrance to Pompeii and a local bus can take you to Vesuvius.

There are regular ferries from Sorrento to Capri and cost roughly between 34 euros and 41 euros return. Then you can get a bus, (usually packed full with standing only) or a taxi, about 23 euros to Anacapri but you can share a taxi with someone in the queue. Then you've got to get back to Capri and back to the port for the ferry. We recently did a TUI excursion for 80 euros each which included a minibus on Capri. We've also been DIY and Capri can be very crowded with day trippers and can be very expensive.

We used the Sita bus along the Amalfi Coast many years ago but these days they can be packed full with standing only. We've also used the ferry and it's a great way to travel but lately there have only been two a day from Sorrento. We now use the Coast To Coast Coach and another bus or coach can take you from Amalfi bus station up the hill to Ravello. We have also done the Amalfi Drive coach trip with TUI twice but you don't stop in Positano . Other organised excursions do stop in Positano.

It's a personal choice whether you do the organised excursions or go by public transport. There are also boat trips, boat hire and private drivers.

Sorrento is a labyrinth of cobbled streets dotted with limoncello stands, gelato shops and lively street vendors. We’ll explore together, taking in highlights such as the greenery-draped 14th-century monastery, Chiostro di San Francesco. Soak up the sea views from Sorrento Park - with views of Mount Vesuvius in the distance. After all that sightseeing, you might be feeling peckish. Perhaps opt for an afternoon of pizza-making at a local restaurant, where you’ll learn the art of creating delicious traditional Neapolitan pizzas. Delicioso.

Day 3 - Pompeii

We head out to explore Pompeii today. This Roman resort town was buried in AD 79 by a sudden and massive eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Most of the locals weren’t able to escape and many reminders of their day-to-day life have been well preserved under thick layers of ash and lava. Our guided tour will give us a glimpse into the lifestyle of this once thriving town. Many household items are on display to view - as they were hundreds of years ago - providing a fascinating insight into ancient Roman customs, art and trades. Even the walls themselves, with shops signs and graffiti of electoral propaganda, are completely compelling.

Day 4 - Amalfi Coast

Brace yourself for one of the world’s most spectacular and famous drives. Italy's Amalfi Coast is a 50km stretch of stunning coastline that winds its way along the Sorrentine Peninsula from Sorrento to Salerno. Soak up the breathtaking seascapes at every twist and turn - you’ll want to keep your camera at the ready for this. Our first stop is pretty Positano, awash with pastel-painted houses clinging to the cliff edge. From here, we’ll take to the water and speed over to iconic Amalfi by boat, so you’ll have the added bonus of seeing the coastline from the sea. Later, we’ll return to Sorrento by boat.

Day 5 - Sorrento

Today is at leisure to explore the tangled streets of Sorrento under your own steam. Perhaps join our optional excursion to mighty Mount Vesuvius to learn about the history and geology of this restless mountain. After, you’ll stop for a leisurely wine tasting and light lunch at a winery on the fertile slopes of the volcano. This famous Neapolitan wine, Lacrima Christi (tears of Christ), is grown right here giving the grapes a unique flavour.

Day 6 - Capri

We’ll journey to the ‘jewel of the Bay of Naples’ - the idyllic island of Capri. As we approach by private boat, you’ll see the island’s famed limestone cliffs soaring from the sparkling blue water. Take in the sights of the island from the water on a private guided boat tour. We'll then travel up to Capri town via funicular for some free time to wander the harbour and many gelato shops or simply take in the fantastic views.

Day 7 - Sorrento

Spend your final day soaking up the sights of Sorrento or perhaps wander down to one of the bathing platforms for a spot of relaxation. This evening we’ll enjoy a traditional farewell dinner together at a local restaurant on Sorrento Pier. The beautiful views across the sea will only enhance Sorrento’s renowned sunsets.

What to expect

A playground for everyone from the ancient Greeks to Hollywood stars, Capri is the dazzling gem of the Neapolitan Riviera. You'll speed across by hydrofoil in the afternoon to pass the evening on Italy's most glamorous island doing exactly as you wish. Giovanna, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Before the sun goes down – or even better, at sunset – take a short walk to Augustus Gardens for the best views over the Faraglioni Rocks. When evening falls, most day-trippers have left the island, and you can enjoy strolling through Capri town's chic piazzas in search of an aperitivo.'

You'll start your Capri adventure with a tour around the island by boat, so you can take in the drama of its cliffs and grottoes. Then, as dusk descends, you'll be escorted up to Capri town for the evening. Explore the maze of car-free lanes under your own steam, dipping in and out of designer shops or stopping for a gelato under the twinkle of the night sky.

Once you have your bearings, you'll be able to dine out in one of the many upmarket restaurants dotted around town. Giovanna says, ‘The local cuisine is tempting, with fresh seafood, pasta dishes and regional wines always reliable choices. For a light option, try a caprese salad – a simple combination of mozzarella, tomatoes and fresh basil which was invented here in the 1950s.' After your evening in Capri, you'll return to Sorrento late at night.

The tour was good. Not enough time in Positano. The ride has excellent views of the Amalfi Coast. Enjoyed the boat ride around Amalfi.

Date of trip changed st last minute, lucky I had access to Internet and was checking emails. Minibus rather cramped and rather dark inside. This is significant since we spent more than half our time on the road. Had four one hour stops. Tour guide OK but not up to usual standard. She handled a request by other couple for a boat trip vey poorly. Have had much better tours through Viator and given the cost of the trip I do not believe it is good value and would not recommend to others.

Excellent small group tour. Amalfi, Positano and Ravello were excellent. Lunch was very disappointing.

Fabulous! This is exactly the tour as described and what was expected. Laura was a wonderful guide and Matteo was a great driver given the winding, narrow and steep roads. Each town was unique and beautiful - we enjoyed Positano, Amalfi, Lunch in Pontone, and Ravello - all were breathtaking. We took the optional boat ride in Amalfi and it was so worth it. Laura was fantastic at pointing out the sights of interest and was a wealth of knowledge. I would highly recommend this tour.
