Hi, I wonder what the difference is between 'trip over' and 'trip on'. For example, 1.Clary tripped over a cable and broke his foot. 2.He tripped on the bottom step. (I got the two examples from online dictionary.) Thank you very much.

Generally, tripped on just says where the trip occurred. You can trip on the step without the step being in any way defective. Tripped over indicates exactly what caused the trip. The cable was where the tripper didn't expect it to be.

Hi Lexphile, Many thanks for your response. I'm still confused their meanings. Do you mean they are a little different? Do the two terms mean someone fell or almost fell? When do we use trip over and when trip on? Thank you very much.

Whether or not the tripper falls is not expressed in either of these two forms. If you walk around backstage in a theatre, in the dark, it's possible that you might trip over a cable, or a flat, or a pair of illicit lovers. That just means that you catch your foot on it (or on them). You may well continue walking, after you have regained your balance. Generally, I use trip over , since it points directly to the obstruction that precipitated the trip. In fact, except for "the step" or "the stairs" (or similar), I can't think of any construction that sounds better with trip on . Many people use trip on in all circumstances, suggesting that, for them, there is no distinction at all between the forms. You can also use trip over figuratively. You might, for example, trip over a word in a text, if the word seems out of place or is unfamiliar. I don't think anyone would say he tripped on a word. However: we do say "he tripped up on question 15 in the test."

The man tripped over the toy on the floor or The man tripped on his way across the room . There is a difference as Lexiphile said: the first is saying what caused the trip (the toys in this case), while the second says where or when it happened (while crossing the room). You choose which to use by what you are describing, the cause or where/when. In both cases the man may have hit the floor, or recovered from the stumble. More information in the sentence would be needed to clarify that.

Hi Lexphile, Many thanks for your more and clear explanation. Could you please check if 'step on' is fine in the following sentence? And is 'trip over' also fine here? "He tripped on a stone and injured his foot." Do you mean "He tripped on the bottom step" here 'the bottom step' means a place(where) not a obstruction? Hi out2lnch, Many thanks for your response. Thanks a lot.

'Step' here means 'stair'.

Thank you very much out2lnch. Is it fine to use 'trip over' in the example? 'He tripped over the bottom stair.'

linlon said: And is 'trip over' also fine here? "He tripped on a stone and injured his foot." Yes, if he caught his toe on the stone and lost his balance, I would in fact prefer "tripped over." "Step on" doesn't really work here. If you step on a stone and it tips up so that you twist your ankle, that isn't the same as tripping. Do you mean "He tripped on the bottom step" here 'the bottom step' means a place(where) not a obstruction? For me, yes. Since steps are intended to be walked on, up or down, I would not consider them to be an obstruction. You can't blame the step if you're too drunk to walk properly, even though you do, in tripping on the step, actually catch your toe on some part of the step. The step is where you tripped, when you say "tripped on the step." Click to expand...

Hi Lexiphile, Thank you very much for your kind and helpful answer. I'm getting the hang of it. Do you think 'trip over' is fine here? 'He tripped over the bottom step.' Many thanks

If I may jump in as well, I agree with Lexiphile about the circumstances causing the trip being the reason to choose one over the other. If the man were walking backwards, for example, not paying attention to what he was doing and tripped over the bottom step of a ladder he didn't see, "over" makes sense. If he were walking down the stairs and tripped on the last step simply because he was not surefooted, "tripped on" would make sense. You keep asking if it's fine. The short answer is: it's fine in certain circumstances. If you want to communicate that some unexpected object caused him to trip, then "trip over" is fine. If he is walking down the steps, "tripped over" sounds very odd to me.

Ashraful Haque said: If someone's walking down the stairs, do we say "he tripped on the stairs?" Isn't it wrong since 'over' is used to identify the object that caused the trip. Yes, it's wrong. And what about 'tripped' without any preposition. If I'm walking down the stairs can I simply say "I tripped while walking down the stairs." Click to expand...

So how do I say that I tripped while walking down the stairs, "I tripped on the stairs?" On= location. Over= the object that caused the trip. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

In 'the simpsons' I heard Lisa complaining "she tripped me." What does that exactly mean? Was it intentional?

Probably, but without seeing the cartoon...

I would say it was deliberate.

Transportation Prepositions: In, On, By (Uses, Examples, Practice, and Audio Reading Included)

Updated: Jul 27, 2023

trip on usage

Recommended level: Intermediate

"Is it 'ON the bus' or 'IN the bus'?"

Quick Reference

Use "on" for large vehicles which you can stand and walk around in (a bus, an airplane, a train, a metro/subway car, a cruise ship, a boat).

Use "in" for (usually) smaller vehicles or crafts that you have to enter and sit in (a car, a taxi, a truck, a helicopter, a canoe, a kayak, a small boat, a carriage, a rickshaw).

Use "on" for smaller vehicles which require you to sit on a seat with one leg on each side, and which typically have handlebars (a motorcyle, a scooter, a bicycle, an ATV, a snowmobile, a unicycle).

Use "on" for vehicles which require you to stand to use them (a Segway, a skateboard, a hoverboard, etc.)

Use "by" for almost all forms of transportation to mention how you traveled somewhere (Example: "Is it cheaper to travel there by car or by train?")

In English, choosing between on and in is important, and knowing which one to use when talking about transportation can be tricky--but it doesn't have to be. Today, we'll learn how to use each one, and I'll make it easier for you to express yourself accurately when discussing different ways of getting around. So, let's begin and let's make things clearer.

(By the way, "getting around" means traveling or moving between different places. You can "get around" by bus, by car, by train, etc. Oh, and there will be more on this topic later.)

Okay, so the basic difference between on and in for transportation is this:

On is typically used for larger forms of transportation, such as buses, planes, trains, subways or metros, cruise ships, and big boats . If you can stand up and walk around a form of transportation in order to find a place to sit, you are on that form of transportation. Here are some examples:

"We were on the bus for over 45 minutes."

"You can eat all you want on a cruise ship."

"Have you ever been on a plane before?"

"I've never been on a train."

"Sorry about the connection. I'm on the subway."

In is typically used with smaller vehicles or crafts that you have to enter and sit in, such as cars, taxis, trucks, carriages, rickshaws, canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, or smaller boats in general . If you don't have a lot of room to move and you can't really stand up and comfortably walk around to find a place to sit, you are in that form of transportation. Note these examples:

"I'm in a taxi right now. I'll see you in 15 or 20 minutes."

"How many people can fit in your car?"

"I've never been in a rickshaw."

"Don't stand in the canoe! It's going to tip over!"

"I saw Tom and Dina in a carriage around Central Park."

Basically, for most modes of transportation, on equals more freedom of movement, and in equals less freedom of movement .

But wait! What about motorcycles, skidoos, skateboards, ATVs, and snowmobiles? That's a great question, and this one is easier to understand because it's also more logical than saying "I'm on the bus."

In short, if you can stand on or sit on a (usually) single-person or two-person vehicle or piece of sports equipment, use on . This includes vehicles which require you to place your legs on either side of the seat--and which have handlebars--such as bikes, motorcycles, ATVs, Vespas, and snowmobiles, and vehicles which you stand on and partially control with your body weight, such as skateboards, Segways, hoverboards, and scooters. Once again, you don't have a lot of freedom of movement with these vehicles.

Now is a good time to practice what we have learned so far. Answer these questions:

When was the last time you were on a bus?

Have you ever been on a cruise ship?

What's the longest amount of time that you have ever spent in a car? How about in a taxi?

Have you ever been on a motorcycle?

Just a few more things about "on" and "in"

You can be on an elevator or in an elevator, but you can only be on an escalator. To practice talking about elevators, answer this question:

Have you ever gotten stuck on/in an elevator?

Also, if you say "I'm in the subway" or "I'm in the metro," you mean you are walking underground, but not necessarily that you are traveling on a subway or metro train. However, you can refer to one individual section of a subway train by saying you are "in a subway car."

In addition, people will sometimes say "I'm in the bus" or "I'm in the plane" to emphasize that they are inside the bus, the plane, etc. However, on is still considered the most standard and common form in these cases. So, just to try to stick to using on .

Next, let's talk about entering and exiting modes of transportation.

"Get in," "Get on," "Get off," "Get out of"

The verb get is often used to talk about entering or climbing on to, and exiting or climbing off of these modes of transportation . Depending on the situation, "get on" and "get in" are used for entering something or for sitting on something. For example:

"Get in the car."

"Get on your skateboard and let's go."

"I got on the bus at 7 a.m."

"I'm getting in a taxi right now."

In a similar way, "get off" and "get out of" are used for exiting or climbing off of something. Note the examples:

"We need to get off the subway at the next station."

"Can I get out of the car, please?"

"Why are you getting out of the boat?"

"I would never try to get off a moving train."

With all of that in mind, if someone is encouraging you to enter a bus or train, they might say "Get in!" or "Get on!" with equal confidence. I'm sorry. I didn't make these rules. I'm just doing my best to explain what people actually say in these situations.

To finish, let's answer two more practice questions :

How much does it cost to get on a bus in your area?

Have you ever taken a bus, train, or subway and accidentally gotten off at the wrong stop?

The final stop: A quick word on "by"

The word by is used with almost all forms of transportation. It is used for mentioning how you travel, traveled, will travel, or are traveling somewhere . Here are some examples to help you see it in action:

"Did you travel by bus or metro?"

"Should we go by bike or scooter?"

"We got here by car."

"Can we get there by train?"

"It will take us forever to get there by skateboard."

"Do you want to go to the park by bike or on foot?" ("On foot" is an irregularity when we are talking about transportation. If you travel somewhere on foot, it means you walk there.)

Well, now that's it! Whether you prefer to travel by bus, bike, or rickshaw, I hope you found this page useful.

If you did, and you would like to continue improving your English--while supporting my work at the same time--consider purchasing my book 100 Practical English Phrasal Verbs . It is available in PDF, e-Book, and paperback formats. Thank you, and good luck with your studies!

Fuel Needed & Fuel Cost Calculations

In order to calculate the amount of fuel for a given trip using our fuel cost calculator or otherwise, you need to know the total distance you will be covering and the expected average fuel consumption of your vehicle. It works the same way for cars, trucks, buses, vans, SUVs, and even boats and planes. If you also want to calculate the fuel cost of a trip, then you need to know the price per gallon or price per liter at which you can by.

Our calculator supports entering distances in miles and kilometers. In terms of fuel consumption, it is very versatile as it accepts: miles per gallon, gallons per 100 miles, kilometers per liter and liters per 100 kilometers. In the US, miles per gallon and kilometers per liter would more frequently used, while in most of Europe the preferred metric would be liters to travel 100 km and gallons to cover 100 miles. The result in terms of fuel amount is in gallons or liters, and for fuel cost is in the currency you entered it in (you can simply ignore the currency sign, e.g. $ (USD)).

Make sure to account for the variation in fuel consumption when driving within city limits and on highways - usually the consumption is higher in the former case. Always fill your tank with more fuel than you anticipate you would need, especially during winter or when driving through desolate areas or when extreme weather conditions are expected.

    Formula for fuel amount

If you are using mpg (miles per gallon), then the formula for calculating the total amount of gas needed is:

Fuel = Distance / Consumption mpg

For example, if the distance is 500 miles and consumption is 20 miles per gallon, then the fuel you will need for the entire distance is 500 / 20 = 25 gallons.

If you are using gallons per 100 mi to measure consumption, then the formula for calculating the amount of fuel needed is:

Fuel = Distance / 100 x Consumption per 100 mi

For example, if the distance is 300 miles and the consumption is 5 gallons per 100 miles, you will need 300 / 100 x 5 = 15 gallons of gas.

Both formulas are applicable for metric units - km and liters, just make sure you do not mix metric units. Using an online fuel calculator will make sure you do not commit that mistake.

    How to improve fuel economy?

Don't like the numbers you see when you use our tool? If you wonder how you can improve the fuel efficiency of your vehicle so you can cover more miles (or kilometers) with less fuel, we have some tips that can result in significant savings, especially when applied consistently over time. Here is our list of 10 fuel efficiency tips :

  • Drive sensibly - If you drive aggressively - too fast compared to other cars, constantly overtaking other vehicles, and rapid acceleration followed by braking, only to accelerate again wastes a lot of gas. By some estimates, quick starts and hard stops can increase fuel consumption by more than 30% ! This is why this is number one in our fuel efficiency list.
  • Observe the speed limit - Different vehicles have optimal fuel economy at different velocities, but one way to increase gas mileage is to avoid driving at higher speeds. A small reduction of your average speed , say from 70 mph to 60 mph (equivalently: from 115 km/h to 100 km/h) can help you save 10 to 20% due to lower fuel consumption.
  • Follow the leader - drive at about the speed of the vehicle in front of you, if they are following the first 2 tips above. This will make sure you need to accelerate and decelerate as little as possible. If possible, overtake drivers who do not follow them, as it will make it very hard for you to do so. This will result in smaller numbers from our fuel cost calculator.
  • Check your tires - make sure your tire pressure is at optimal levels as indicated in the owner's manual provided by the auto manufacturer. If the pressure is too low your mileage will decrease significantly, not to mention that the car may become dangerous to drive.
  • Smart routing - make sure you take optimal paths to reach your desired destination. Learn the different modes of route selection your GPS employs - the shortest is not always the fastest and idling stuck in traffic will waste fuel. Use services such as Google Maps to check for traffic congestions on the planned route. Using a route you know well can also help improve fuel efficiency, since you will know in advance where it makes sense to increase speed and where it does not, because of a traffic light just ahead.
  • Air conditioning - turning it off will most likely improve your fuel efficiency by 10-15%, and will result in you having more power to accelerate quicker when needed. If it is necessary, make sure you do not set it to unreasonably low or high levels. Air temperature in the range between 64°F - 75°F (18°C - 24°C) is comfortable for most people. Due to the law of thermodynamics, each subsequent degree of heating or cooling requires progressively more energy to accomplish and maintain.
  • Remove excess weight - make sure you remove any unneeded heavy items you have in your trunk. One of the untold benefits of losing weight is that your car will be a bit more efficient as well.
  • Turn cruise control ON - when on a highway, make sure to use your cruise control option. By keeping your speed constant, it will most likely save gas and result in lower fuel costs.
  • Avoid idling - idling means 0 miles per gallon and the larger the car engine, the more gas is wasted when idling. Avoid excessive idling, when possible, in line with point #5 above to keep fuel costs low.
  • Maintain your vehicle - a well-maintained car, truck, van, SUV, etc. will operate at greater efficiency. Exact fuel savings are hard to calculate, as it will depend on the type of maintenance work your vehicle needs. However, good maintenance is sure to lead to fuel savings and smaller cost numbers coming out of our calculator.

fuel cost

All the above advice is fine, but what do you do if you have been following the above advice, yet our tool still shows you numbers that are so high you want to cry? Well, it is most likely time for a new car, or it could be just the fuel price fluctuations over which, unfortunately, neither you nor we have much influence, individually. Fuel prices in most places contain license fees and other state or local government taxes, in some places reaching as much as 50% of the final price. Financial market fluctuations, natural disasters or extreme weather, crisis, as well the geographical area you are in and the local fuel suppliers all influence the price of gas. All you can do is try to observe them and predict when you can get a more decent price.

Related Gas Mileage Calculator | Mileage Calculator

The price of gas may go up or down, but it's always a major expense for most drivers. The average American driver spends about $3,000 per year on gas, according to the American Automobile Association. Some of the practical ways to reduce fuel costs are listed below.

Use public transportation

Walking or biking does not consume fuel, and as such does not accumulate fuel cost. In most cases, public transport alternatives to cars such as buses, trains, and trolleys are viable options of reducing fuel costs. Due to the communal nature of ride sharing, the fuel costs of operating public transport are generally less than the fuel costs associated with each individual operating their own vehicle. In some places, public transport is free. Considering the costs associated with owning or renting a car creates even more incentive to use other modes of transportation.

Also known as car sharing, carpooling is the arrangement between two or more people to travel to a shared destination in a single vehicle. Although a heavier car consumes slightly more fuel, it is usually much more efficient than two people driving separate cars towards the same destination.

Use a more fuel efficient vehicle

Driving a smaller car makes a great difference – the fuel cost is about half for a small sedan than for a very large SUV. Similarly, drive with a less powerful engine than you need. Don't pay for an eight-cylinder engine when four cylinders work just fine. Unless you're hauling heavy loads on a routine basis, the extra cost of a bigger engine results in more money spent on gasoline.

Tune the engine

A properly tuned engine maximizes power and can greatly enhance fuel efficiency. But tuning the car engine is often done to increase horsepower – that's not the way to save on fuel. Make sure the tuner gets the message.

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent – this amount will vary depending on the nature of the repair.

Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.

Placing ornaments and ground effects, aerodynamics kits, and airfoils, such as deck-lid spoilers, may make you feel good, but they also increase the car's drag and make it require more fuel. Such accessories offer no real handling enhancements, although they may look nice on your car. Also, place signs or cargo on the roof so that the object angles forward. This will reduce the frontal area of the object, and it will cause less drag, and cause you to use less fuel.

Adjust tires

Make sure the tires are inflated to the right levels. Properly inflated tires can reduce fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. Your tires also lose about 1 PSI per month, and when the tires are cold (e.g., in the winter), their pressure will decrease due to the thermal contraction of the air. It is recommended to check tires at least monthly, preferably weekly. Having properly inflated tires will also help you avoid uneven wear on the tread.

Gas stations don't always have accurate equipment for this purpose. Sometimes gas stations use automatic air compressors that stop at a pre-determined level. To make sure you inflate to the right level, double-check pressure with your own gauge.

Recommended inflation pressures are for cold tires; put about 3 PSI more in if the tires have been driven on a while. Inflate to the pressure recommended by the car manufacturer, not to the level stamped on the tire.

Use the correct motor oil

Gas mileage will improve by 1 percent to 2 percent if you use the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can reduce your gas mileage by a considerable amount. Using 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1 percent to 2 percent. Also, look for motor oil that says "Energy Conserving" on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.

Plan trips carefully

There is no more obvious way to save gas than to drive a shorter distance.

Plan your route carefully. With today's GPS route planners, it's easy to calculate a straight route with the fewest stops and diversions. It is also possible to judge which route will have the least traffic. Take highways instead of local routes or city streets when possible – the steady speed maximizes fuel efficiency.

When driving in a city, try to park in a central location, and then walk from one appointment to another, or take public transportation. Ragged stop-and-go city driving is terrible for your gas mileage. This also saves the high level of gas used in parking and pulling out in a parking lot.

Factors that determine the fuel price

Government intervention.

Governments may intervene in gasoline (referred to as petrol in some parts of the world) markets by taxation, which may raise prices for consumers within or outside the governmental territory. Similarly, certain industries may receive financial support from the government to promote commercial enterprise (a subsidy). Generally, subsidized products or services can be sold at lower prices.

Financial markets

The global oil price fluctuates constantly. The key crudes quoted are Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) in the unit of US$ per barrel. The retail fuel price is closely related to the global oil price fluctuation.

Political elements such as structure, regime, personnel, and events can all affect the cost of fuel. For instance, a change in leadership from a leader who doesn't believe in climate change to one who does may result in changes to the cost of fuel for consumers based on different policies, such as choosing not to subsidize fuel. Political relationships between countries are also a factor; nations can go to war over resources, or form alliances in order to trade, both of which can affect the cost of fuel.

Geographic area

Certain geographical areas or countries in the world have an abundance of oil, while others do not have a single drop. Regional consumers within close proximity of high supplies of oil are more likely to have lower costs of fuel due to ease of access. Areas without their own supply of oil that are isolated from the rest of the world (such as islands in the Pacific) can find fuel to be relatively expensive.

Natural disaster or weather

Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, major floods, and other such nature-related phenomena can affect the production, manufacturing, and logistics of gasoline, which can possibly affect the price of fuel. For instance, a snowstorm may close certain roads, disallowing the transportation of the resource and driving up fuel costs in these areas. Hurricanes or earthquakes can damage oil refineries, abruptly halting production, which can also eventually increase fuel costs.

Gas Calculator

How much gas will i use, splitting the gas cost, related topics, cost of gas, gas prices and taxes, gas price history, gas price increase, gas price today, fuel economy, best fuel economy cars, cost of gas for trip.

This gas calculator is a handy tool for every driver who, when planning a trip, asks how much gas will I use? We prepared the gas estimator to help you find out how much fuel you will use on a car trip and how much it will cost you.

Our gas cost calculator is versatile and offers more then other web-based fuel cost calculators (e.g. splitting the gas cost). All you need is to enter the driving distance and the average fuel economy of your car - then, all the math is done automatically! In fact, your biggest concern will be how much gas costs at your nearest gas station.

That's not all, though. In the corresponding article, you can find information about gas price today, gas price history, and gas price increase. Also, check out the best fuel economy cars and how to do eco-drive properly. Finally, a user-friendly tutorial will ensure you're using the gas calculator properly.

Our gas estimator operates on a very simple premise:

  • Determine the distance you are about to travel. Let's say 295 km .
  • Find out what's your fuel economy. Let's use 8 l/100 km .
  • To work out how much fuel you will use in total, divide your distance by 100 (because we are looking at the fuel use every 100 km), so: 295 / 100 = 2.95 and then multiply it by your combustion, so by 8: 2.95 × 8 = 23.6 . Now you know that you will use 23.6 liters of fuel.

If we want to take this one step further and find out how much this trip will cost us:

  • Determine the price of the fuel. Let's say 1.6 €/L .
  • To find out the total price, multiply the total amount of fuel you will use by its price, so: 23.6 l × 1.6 €/L = €37.76 .
  • Now you know how to calculate the fuel use and its cost on your own, or you could use our gas calculator to make it so much easier and faster!

We finally know the answer to the question: how much gas will I use? However, we often travel with other passengers, so there is no need to pay for gas only by ourselves, we can split the cost among all passengers instead. All those calculations can be working awkward, so to spare you time and effort, our gas calculator can do it for you:

  • Find out the total fuel cost. Let's use the example above of €37.76 .
  • Determine how many people are there. Let's say 4 .
  • Divide the total price by the number of people to work out each person's share: €37.76 / 4 = €9.44 or let our gas estimator do it for you!

There is occasionally a situation when you need to convert liters into gallons, be it US gallons or UK gallons. Let's be honest, no one has ever learned to do it by heart, so we always seek out help, mostly online. Our gas calculator has the option of not only choosing whether you want to count liters or gallons but also what is the distance unit - kilometers, miles, etc. However, we encourage you to use our mpg converter for converting between liters and gallons.

You might also find yourself reluctant to drive everywhere. If you're planning to spend some time in a different city, for instance, it might be more economical to use public transport! Take a look at our ticket optimizer to choose the cheapest combination of tickets for your stay.

Gas cost

Every car user spends money on gas. It is one of the most noticeable vehicle-related expenses. You can drive a car that has old tires, but without a full fuel tank, you will not travel far. So, it is evident that we quickly notice any increase in fuel price. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA) , the average driver spends $3000 on fuel annually.

Gasoline prices are not determined just by the price of crude oil. Let's take a closer look at it. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA) , the average price of a gallon of regular gas in May 2014 was about $3.67. For the week of June 23, it would set you back $3.70. A French driver would have paid around $7.83, a British one $8.94. In Norway, which produces 1.8 million barrels of oil per day, a gallon of gas reached $9.90.

According to the EIA data from May 2014, the costs of producing crude oil account for only 65% of the average gas price. The next 12% are taxes (federal, state, and local), and another 11% for distribution and marketing. Refining accounts for about 13% of the gasoline price.

A big part of the gas price is taxes. The U.S. federal government established an 18.4 cents tax on gasoline and 24.4 cents on diesel. Without taxes, a gallon of gasoline is more expensive in the USA than in the U.K. ($3.18) and France ($3.37). There are also local and state taxes to consider. According to the Tax Foundation , if you are buying gas in New York State, you would pay the highest taxes in America (50.6 cents per gallon in 2013). The lowest taxes are in Alaska, where most of America's oil comes from - they are 8 cents.

Below you will find the retail price of regular gasoline in the United States from 1990 to 2017 (in U.S. dollars per gallon) . Check the fluctuations of a gas price over the last seventeen years.

Gas prices are not stable and they tend to fluctuate over time. These variations may be driven by many different factors e.g. consumer fears over refining capacity. There are also economic factors, for example, non-stable geopolitical situation (especially near oil-producing nations) or the risk of an oil-supply interruption.

To illustrate this principle, let's go back in time to 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit much of the refining capacity along the Gulf Coast. Many refineries had to be closed, which caused a decrease in oil supply and, automatically, a high increase in gas prices. That year has begun with the average monthly gas price at $2.27 and finished at $2.76 but within the general upward trend. In September, there was a peak up to $3.47 due to fears about the gasoline supply - this is the first time in history when gas prices exceeded the $3 threshold.

Even though the supply has met the demand shortly after, gasoline suppliers weren't inclined to lower the prices, as their customers got used to new prices. As a result, the price of gasoline has been kept high since the hurricane.

According to the Energy Information Administration , USA produces about 12% of the world's oil, which amounts to 2.7 billion barrels per day . That makes the United States one of the major oil-producing countries, up there with the likes of Saudi Arabia and Russia. However, the U.S. is also one of the biggest consumers of gasoline on a per capita basis, with approximately 1.22 gallons of gas per person daily. Gasoline is often regarded as a key driver of a country's economy. It is the main fuel used in passenger vehicles and the automotive fleets of small and large businesses.

Let's take a look at a worldwide gasoline prices comparison (in U.S. dollars per gallon). The data comes from April 16th, 2018. Fuel prices vary from a few cents to over 7 dollars per gallon. Gas price in the U.S. placed at the level of $2.99, while in Germany it was considerably higher - $6.43. We can observe that generally, gas prices in Europe are much higher than in America. Norway is the infamous world leader in gas prices at $7.82 per gallon. This is over 2.6 times more than in the USA and... 261 times more than in Venezuela ($0.03).

Gasoline prices over time

We all wish we didn't have to spend so much on gas, and would like to keep that money in our wallets instead. Check out the tips below if you want to save more money while fueling your car:

Check prices online - nowadays, there are many websites that provide daily updated gas prices in your neighborhood. Spending a little bit of time on an Internet check will allow you to plan a route for a gas stop at the station with the best prices. Try to do it for a month or two, and you will notice which stations consistently offer lower prices, and which tend to raise them.

Stay away from the highway - the stations which are located close to big roads are often the easiest to reach and prompt you their good quality coffee and meals. Keep in mind that probably you will pay more (sometimes much more) just because of the good location of the business.

Small, private stations - are a good alternative. Owners are not affiliated with big brands which take some of the income because of brand recognition. The quality of gas has to be compliant with standards, so you shouldn't be concerned about it.

Plan your purchase - try to avoid the situation when you will be forced to fill up by the fuel indicator on your dashboard. You would probably have to stop at the nearest gas station; hopefully not one close to the highway.

Join the club partnership - most gas companies offer club partnerships. Being a club member enables you to recoup some money if you refuel at their gas stations regularly. Usually, you collect points when filling up, and then you can exchange them for discounts or gifts.

Because of rising fuel prices more and more motorists are conscious of getting the maximum efficiency from their cars. Eco-driving is a way of driving that reduces fuel consumption, gas emissions, and accident rates. This term is the synonym for driving in a smart, smooth, and safe way that leads to an average fuel savings of 5-10% . Keep in mind - good driving is eco-driving .

If you are interested, follow the rules below:

  • Anticipate the traffic flow : Look ahead on the road as far as you can and try to anticipate the flow of traffic. Maintain a larger safety distance from other cars to increase your scope of the traffic. Use this knowledge to get the most out of your vehicle's momentum (in gear or neutral), accelerating and braking smoothly.

🙋 Learn how to estimate traffic flow in the traffic density calculator .

Maintain a steady speed at low RPM : Drive gently, using the highest possible gear at low RPM. Avoid driving at excessive speeds. Try to keep the speed steady and avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration.

Shift up early : Change to a higher gear at around 2000 RPM.

Check tires pressures frequently : Ensure your tires are properly inflated. Low tire pressure is a safety risk and a waste of fuel.

Avoid dead weight and aerodynamic drag : Remove heavy objects that you don't use from your car (for sure you have some). Also, keep windows closed while driving on the motorway - it helps to improve the fuel economy.

Use air-conditioning sparingly : Using the AC unnecessarily is a waste of money, because keeping it on increases fuel consumption.

Share your car : One of the best ideas to save money. Just one additional passenger would reduce your trip expenses by 50%.

“New vehicles offer the latest designs, cutting-edge technologies, and warranties that offer peace of mind, but, car owners that like to change vehicles frequently should be thinking about the resale value – not just the purchase price – when choosing their next ride.” John Nielsen, American Automobile Association's (AAA) managing director of Automotive Engineering and Repair.

The latest annual AAA’s analysis shows a shift in consumers' preferences. We can observe an increased appetite for SUVs cars and pickup trucks and a decreased demand for sedans.

It results in a higher car depreciation costs (up to 13% in comparison to last year) of these ex-popular cars. Electric and hybrid vehicles have also increased in their popularity - 20 percent of Americans (15% in the previous year) say they are likely to buy an electric car as their next vehicle. It is not surprising - driving "green" cars is going to be more and more affordable. It is because of much lower fuel and maintenance charges.

Research conducted by AAA shows the average cost of owning and operating a new vehicle in 2018. The study is based on the cost of fuel, maintenance, repairs, insurance, and taxes. 45 top-selling 2018 model year cars were taken into account across nine categories. The databases on 15,000 miles driven annually.

New cars are attractive to buyers because of the newest technology and electronics inside, various accessories, and a multitude of configuration options. However, they are not the best economical choice for some customers. For those who look for alternatives to new car ownership or ways to minimize operating costs should take a look at the tips below:

Buy a pre-owned car - slightly used vehicle in good condition is an affordable choice. Ownership costs are significantly lower, and the vehicle can still be safe, reliable, and perfect for driving.

Fuel responsibly - avoid wasting money on premium grade gasoline (unless your vehicle requires it) and on tanking up at expensive gas stations (e.g., those near highways).

Take care of your car - in general, spending money on routine maintenance will save you money.

Drive eco - when gas prices rise, small changes in your driving style could make a significant difference to your wallet.

Cars with great gas mileage used to have a reputation for being underpowered and small. However, the latest technologies, from plug-in hybrids to weight-saving measures and new solutions applied to engine construction, helped to change it. Nowadays, it means that nearly any kind of vehicle can be efficient without compromising space, comfort, or fun. Take a look at the top 15 best fuel economy cars:

  • Toyota Prius Prime (2018)

You are planning a trip, and you are wondering how to get there. Usually, if the distance is not too big, traveling by car is fast and comfortable. Moreover, it is often cheaper than flying or even taking a train. But is it always? Finding the answer involves the current price of gasoline, your car's fuel efficiency, the distance, and some other road fees.

While planning a trip by car, first you should find out what your car fuel economy is (You can do that with our mpg calculator .). Then, knowing the trip distance, you can use the fuel cost calculator and easily find if is it affordable for you to use a car for the trip. Remember, you can easily reduce the costs of gas by finding cheap gas stations on the way and by taking more friends with you, who can chip in for the fuel.

Why do gas prices go up?

Gas prices may go up for a number of reasons:

  • Restricted supply of oil;
  • Increased taxes; and
  • The seller wished to increase their profit margins.

Does cruise control save gas?

Yes , cruise control saves gas, but only on flat roads. This is because it prevents unnecessary acceleration and deceleration , which can eat more fuel by the sudden shifts in the engine's demands. However, when using cruise control to climb hills, it cannot anticipate when you'll reach the top of the hill and so will keep the gas on for longer than you would.

How much will my drive cost me?

To find out how much your drive will cost, follow these steps:

  • Find the distance you have to travel and the fuel efficiency of your vehicle.
  • Multiply these two figures together. Ensure that the two distance units are the same. This result will give you the total fuel used.
  • Multiply the total fuel burned by the price of fuel. The two units of volume need to be the same.
  • The result is the total cost of your drive.

Calculating the Cost of Gas

How to Estimate Cost of Gas for a Road Trip

trip on usage

Many people assume a road trip is a cheaper way to travel across the United States than flying, but that isn't always the case. It depends on the current gas prices and your car's mileage, so you should always add up the cost of your potential road trip before you forego that plane ticket. To do this, you'll need to know the current price of gas, the miles per gallon your vehicle gets on the highway, and the miles you intend to drive on your trip. It's pretty simple to calculate the cost of gas for a trip, and you can get the bottom line in four easy steps.

Calculate Your Gas Mileage

You first need to look up or calculate the mileage, or miles per gallon (mpg), your vehicle gets. You can do this yourself with simple math, or you can use an online mileage calculator . However, your actual mpg may vary depending on your particular driving style, for example, if you prefer to use cruise control or not. You can also try to figure it out by writing down the reading on your odometer the next time you fill up your car. If you have a computerized console, you could also set your trip odometer to zero by pushing the little knob underneath the odometer.

After setting the trip odometer or writing down the number, drive normally until it's time to get gas, then note the odometer reading or the miles on the trip odometer when you fill your tank again. Subtract the first odometer reading from the second to give you the number of miles you've driven. Or, if you set the trip odometer to zero when you filled up the last time, that figure is the number of miles you have driven on that tank of gas. Divide that number of miles by the number of gallons you just purchased on your second gas station visit, which will give you your miles per gallon.

Remember that your mileage will vary based on whether you spend more time driving on the highway or in town. City driving means you'll spend a lot of time stopping and starting, which uses more gas, so your mileage will be lower. If you use a whole gallon of gas to drive just on the highway, however, your calculation will be more accurate.

Research Your Trip Distance

Next, calculate the total distance you'll be driving on your road trip. For this, you can use AAA or Google Maps . Enter in your start and end points, along with any stops along the way, and then note the number of miles it says your trip will cover. Make sure you check that the route being plotting out is likely to be the one you'll take.

If you're planning a several day-, week-, or month-long road trip, you might make some side trips or detours, so it would be impossible to calculate the exact distance. However, you can still make an educated guess by adding in some side trips to your total; if you decide to skip out on them, you'll be spending less money than you budgeted for. Jot down the total distance you'll be driving, plus extra for potential side trips, next to your figure for miles per gallon.

Find Out the Current Price of Gas

For the third step, you need to know the current gas price. Without an approximate price, you can't calculate gas for a trip. Of course it's impossible to know the exact cost of a gallon of gas at any given time in any given location, but knowing the current price will provide you with a dependable approximation of the total fuel cost for your trip. Use AAA to find the average national gas price . Jot down the amount given at the top of the page as your third figure.

Add up Your Trip Cost

Take the mileage of the total distance of your trip and divide it by your miles per gallon. This will give you the number of gallons of gas you'll need on your journey. Then, multiply that figure by the current gas price, and the result is the estimated cost of gas for your road trip.

For example, say you drove 200 miles after filling your car up, set your trip odometer to zero, and had to return to fill up again. On your return to the gas station, you topped up your tank with 10 gallons of gas. Your mpg would then be 200 divided by 10, which is 20 mpg. You are planning on driving 850 miles on your road trip, and the average price of gas was $3.40 at the time you checked.

To calculate the amount of money you need to budget for your road trip, divide 850 by 20 to get the number of gallons of gas you will need, which is 42.5. Multiply 42.5 by $3.40, which gives you $144.50 as the total cost of gas for your road trip.

Don't Forget Other Travel Costs

The cost of gas is only one aspect of the expense of a road trip. You'll also need to factor in lodging, meals, tolls, and other car-related costs. If you're traveling with friends, you can divvy up the cost of gas, so your transportation fee will be even less per person.

Loved ones mourn parents, 5-year-old son killed in wrong-way crash: ‘It’s a hole’

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC/Gray News) - Loved ones of a family of three, including a 5-year-old boy, killed in a wrong-way crash on a Tennessee interstate are sharing their heartbreaking story.

Arely Cruz Morales says what happened last Wednesday still sits in her mind. She is shocked that not just one but three of her family members were killed that day in a wrong-way crash along Interstate 240 in Memphis, WMC reports .

She says her uncle, Santos Morales; his wife, Magdalena; and their 5-year-old son, Santos Enrique, were headed back from a trip to Louisville, Kentucky, when a wrong-way driver hit their Subaru head-on.

Santos Morales, his wife and their 5-year-old son were all killed by a wrong-way driver on...

“The day of the accident, they were coming back to Memphis, but they didn’t get a chance to make it to their house before the accident had happened,” Cruz Morales said.

She says her uncle just started a new job in Louisville, and the family was returning to Memphis to finish packing. She says they were also returning to get a new passport for their son because they planned to travel for summer break. The 5-year-old had just graduated from kindergarten.

Police say the crash happened when a man driving a Dodge Durango drove the wrong way on I-240 westbound in the early morning. The driver hit the Morales family’s Subaru, killing everyone in both vehicles – a total of four people.

The remains of a Subaru that was struck head-on in a wrong-way crash on I-240 Westbound,...

“It’s pretty hard, taking it all in at once, because it’s not just one person, it’s three. We did have more heartbreak when it came to his son because he was so young,” Cruz Morales said.

She says her uncle loved to go thrifting and always put family first. She says she will always remember him for the motivation he gave his family members.

“My uncle and his wife were always the ones encouraging us, motivating us – our inspiration to keep on being the best person,” Cruz Morales said.

As the family tries to move forward in the wake of this sudden tragedy, they are now faced with the challenge of getting all three bodies to Mexico for a burial ceremony.

“It does complicate a few things to bring them back home and ship their bodies to get the proper burial where our family is at,” Cruz Morales said.

Cruz Morales says her family is trying to get funeral arrangements finalized as soon as possible, due to the severity of the injuries her loved ones sustained in the crash.

In the meantime, they are focused on remembering the Morales family as they last saw them.

“As close as we were to him, it’s a hole that’s gone right now,” Cruz Morales said. “But we know we have the good memories – the laughter, the pictures, the videos – to always look back to.”

Cruz Morales created a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs. Those who are interested in donating can click here .

Travelers Aren’t Using Trip-Planning Apps – What Gives?

Christiana Sciaudone, Skift

June 4th, 2024 at 2:46 PM EDT

Hotel guests are still asking the concierge for ideas on what to do - but hotels can be more than a place to sleep.

Christiana Sciaudone

Why aren’t we using trip-planning apps? Instead, Google Maps and Google Calendar are the most popular trip-planning tools in the world, according to Gilad Berenstein, founder at Brook Bay Capital.

“I am as passionate about trip planning as anyone, but we still have not proven that there’s actually consumer demand around using a purpose built tool,” Berenstein said at Skift’s Data+AI Summit on Tuesday. “Trip planning is a nebulous term, and it has a lot of stuff in it, right? So the serendipity of discovering that great hidden gem is something fun. Optimizing geography across 22 stops in New York City is not fun.”

According to a survey earlier this year by Skift Research, 78% of American travelers have not used ChatGPT or another AI-based app to plan their trips, and 37% were not even interested in trying.

The problem may be in the fragmentation of the industry and a lack of shared information. Industry leaders have been working for years on how to exchange customer data between potentially competing companies so that the traveler has a smoother experience, but the problem hasn’t really been solved yet.

The hotel industry, for example, needs to move to more journey orchestration than simply providing a place to sleep. “When I’m in the hotel, present me with content that’s relevant to me while I’m at the hotel so I can make a better decision on my journey,” Berenstein said. Right now, to get suggestions of what to do in a city at night, you have to ask the concierge. “How do we move into this digital journey? And how do you do that in a way where high tech and high touch come together in a meaningful way for the consumer? Because travel is a little bit of, you’re on your own.”

“I think we can change, but it’s going to require all of us working together,” Berenstein said. “How do we get people who are competitors in many aspects to work together? Because if we actually have a connected trip, if we actually have this single source of truth, we are all better off.”

While you don't necessarily need a lot of things for a successful road trip, certain items can't be overlooked. Read on to discover which items you should consider adding to your road trip packing list, or jump to the section on what to pack for kids .

Road trip essentials for adults

From roadside emergency must-haves to multipurpose gadgets you can use throughout your journey, these are some of the most helpful items to have on a road trip.

"Hanger" can make a road trip go south pretty quick. Pack your favorite snacks and put them in an easily accessible spot.

You might want to bring a small cooler for any snacks and drinks that need to stay cold. If you don't already own one, the best cooler bags include the ICEMULE Classic (available in a variety of sizes) and the CleverMade Collapsible Cooler Bag .

A seat organizer like this one by YOOFAN can help you keep snacks, tissues and any other essentials close at hand. Plus, it can double as a reusable bag for any small purchases you make during your road trip.

USB charging cables

If you have USB ports in your car, buy a set of charging cables so you can keep your devices charged and also play music and podcasts from your phone. Compatible with Apple devices, this two-pack of Amazon Basics cables is well rated; for Samsung devices, try these Anker cables . Both sets have 3-foot cords, which are the perfect size for car travel.

Portable charger

Even if you have charging ports and cables in your car, a portable charger is good to have on hand, too. Travelers rave about the INIU Portable Charger for its slim, lightweight design and overall efficiency.

Jumper cables

A set of jumper cables is essential to have in your car at all times, whether you're driving 2 miles down the road or 200 miles away from home. The Energizer Jumper Cables are especially well rated. Available for less than $20 on Amazon, the 12-foot-long cables are perfect for any car type and come with a travel bag for easy storage. Longer cables are also available.

Portable tire inflator

A portable tire inflator can be a lifesaver if you find your tires have a slow leak during your trip. The AstroAl Air Compressor Tire Inflator is compact, so it won't take up much space among the other gear in your trunk, and it includes an LED flashlight with independent switch control. It is programmed to stop automatically once it hits the preset tire pressure and it comes with a 36-month warranty.

Other travelers prefer the ViAir 88P - 00088 Portable Compressor Kit , noting it works well with a wide variety of vehicles. In addition to a 12-foot air hose and a 9-foot power cord, the kit comes with alligator clamps that power your air compressor by attaching to your car's battery.

Snow Joe 4-in-1 Telescoping Broom against white background.

If you're traveling during the winter months and/or to a destination where you might encounter snow and ice, make sure you have a snow broom in your car. The Snow Joe 4-in-1 Telescoping Broom is especially convenient for travel because of its lightweight, foldable design, and recent buyers confirm the foam head prevents any scratching. This snow broom also features an ice scraper and LED lights with a blinking functionality for emergencies.

Dashboard phone mount

Avoid distractions by installing a dashboard phone mount before your journey starts. The iOttie Easy One Touch 5 comes with a telescopic arm, a magnetic cord organizer and a strong-hold suction cup. Plus, its easy one-touch lock-and-release mechanism (a feature that is much appreciated among recent customers) makes taking your phone on and off the holder a breeze. If you don't like the rigidity of traditional dashboard phone mounts, consider choosing a phone mount with a flexible arm instead.

Car document holder

In the event that you get into a car accident or are pulled over by the police, having easy access to your car's registration, insurance information and owner's manual is crucial – whether you're traveling or not. This two-sided holder , which comes in a pack of two for less than $5 on Amazon, does the job.

Roadside emergency kit

For peace of mind, many travelers recommend an all-purpose roadside emergency kit . These kits are typically equipped with a tire pressure gauge, a utility knife, safety gloves, cable ties, a tow rope, tire repair tools, first-aid supplies, rain ponchos and other useful items.

Lysol wipes

Disinfecting Lysol wipes are a must-have on your travel packing list. These cleaning wipes kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria, so you can feel protected while on the road.

Disposable toilet seat covers

Using disposable toilet seat covers can help you avoid germs and stay clean when you stop for restroom breaks at gas stations, port-a-potties and campgrounds.

Nausea relief

Long hours in the car might sound daunting to anyone prone to motion sickness. In those cases, having preventative nausea medicine like Dramamine can be a lifesaver. Travelers say these bands are highly effective at reducing nausea.

Hand sanitizer

From gas pumps to ATMs, you never know what germs you may encounter on a road trip. Protect yourself against viruses by keeping a bottle of hand sanitizer in your car.

Book or e-reader

Sitting in the car for hours can be painfully boring at times. Bring a good book or an e-reader like the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite , which puts thousands of books at your fingertips. The device boasts up to 10 weeks of battery life, adjustable warm light and a glare-free display, which recent reviewers said made marathon reading sessions a breeze. Meanwhile, kids can enjoy the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Kids , which offers a special font for children with dyslexia and comes with a two-year warranty.

Rooftop cargo carrier

Save some space inside your vehicle by opting for a car roof cargo carrier. With an anti-slip mat and reinforced adjustable straps, the waterproof FIVKLEMNZ 15 Cubic Car Roof Bag Cargo Carrier from Amazon is suitable for any car type. Recent customers say that they had no problem getting it to stay in place even on high-speed roads.

Travelers love that these Ray-Ban Aviator Classic sunglasses come in a variety of tints and can even be customized to fit your needs. For a more budget-friendly option, check out these SUNGAIT Ultra Lightweight Rectangular Polarized Sunglasses from Amazon, which recent customers say are very comfortable and perfect for road tripping.

A large beach blanket or towel is one of the most versatile accessories you can bring on a road trip. You can use it to have a picnic lunch, to clean up a spill, to dry off playground equipment after a rainstorm and more.

Skip the plastic bottles and opt for a high-quality reusable water bottle on your next trip. This  40-ounce bottle from Hydro Flask  keeps drinks hot for 12 hours and cold for a full day. It also comes with a lid with a built-in straw, which consumers say makes it convenient for driving. Road trip essentials for kids

In addition to snacks, headphones, reusable water bottles, sunglasses and – depending whether your kids are in a car seat or not – travel pillows, the following items are essential to a successful road trip with kids.

Seatback organizer

A car seatback organizer lets you arrange road trip essentials on the back of the driver's or passenger's seat, where they're within reach of small hands. Many buyers said this seatback organizer from Amazon took some of the stress out of traveling with kids, thanks to its multipurpose storage compartments, including a place for a tablet and plenty of other spots to store key items for your trip.

Travel tray

If your co-pilot is constantly turning around to pick up toys or pass out snacks, a backseat travel tray is in order. The LUSSO Gear Kids Travel Tray comes with a safety strap that can be secured to any car seat, and includes a dry-erase board table, a cup holder, a storage compartment for toys and a no-drop tablet viewing stand. Reviewers loved the tray's whiteboard area and said it was a great way to keep kids entertained on long car rides.

Window shade

Protect your backseat drivers from UVA and UVB rays with some window shades. Many parents like the shades by Enovoe , which come in a two- or four-pack.

Bag of small toys and activities

Load up on small toys you can surprise your kids with throughout the journey. Wikki Stix , Melissa & Doug Water Wow pads and sticker books are all good, low-cost activities, and you can find other cheap options at your local dollar and thrift stores. You might even add some candy to the mix, especially for that last leg of the trip.

Most parents want to keep screen time to a minimum, but all bets are off when it comes to travel. Consider a tablet like the Amazon Fire Kids , which comes with a protective case and one year of Amazon Kids+. Amazon Kids+ features thousands of ad-free books, games and apps; for any streaming services you have at home, you can download TV show episodes and movies so the kids don't need Wi-Fi to watch them.

Bring a small blanket and/or other comfort item from home to ensure the kids are cozy and content in the backseat. You could also bring a Cubcoat , which is a two-in-one stuffed animal that transforms into a hoodie. Your child's furry friend (think bunnies, sloths and puppies) doubles as a soft, zip-up sweatshirt, and you get to save some space in your suitcase.

Kids travel journal

A kids travel journal makes it easy for your child to document their road trip and all the fun things they see and do. Plus, many kids journals feature world maps, puzzles, fun facts and more activities to keep boredom at bay.

Road trip tips

Plan your stops.

It can be helpful and fun to plan your road trip stops ahead of time. Break up the trip with stops at a pretty park, a quirky roadside attraction or a top-rated restaurant.

Debit cards and Venmo may be the way of the world nowadays, but you may still run into a few places on your journey that are cash-only. Be on the safe side by keeping some spare cash on hand.

Download a fuel savings app

You can save some money on fuel by using apps like GasBuddy , which will show you the cheapest gas prices in your area. Go the extra mile by signing up for a gas rewards credit card to get the most bang for your buck.

Another billionaire plans to visit the Titanic in a submersible to prove it can be done safely, reports say

(Gray News) – Another billionaire is planning a trip to the Titanic wreckage in a submersible after five people were killed in the OceanGate Titan disaster last June.

Billionaire real estate mogul Larry Connor is teaming up with Patrick Lahey, co-founder and president of Triton Submarines , for the next trip to the Titanic, according to multiple outlets.

Lahey has spent years working to make submersibles safe for deep dives and has visited the deepest parts of the ocean.

Lahey told the Wall Street Journal that a few days after the OceanGate tragedy, he got a call from Connor, who was determined to create another expedition to the Titanic that would prove it could be done safely.

Connor, who is worth about $2 billion according to Forbes , is the head of The Connor Group , a luxury apartment building investor. He has also previously visited deep parts of the ocean and outer space.

According to BBC , Connor and Lahey plan to use a two-person submersible made of acrylic that can safely reach 13,000 feet. The Titanic wreckage sits 12,500 feet under the ocean. The OceanGate Titan submersible only had a range of just under 4,300 feet, according to CBS News .

Connor and Lahey have not said when they plan to take their trip to the Titanic.

Trip.com group limited announces proposed offering of us$1.3 billion cash-par settled convertible senior notes.

SINGAPORE , June 4, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Trip.com Group Limited (Nasdaq: TCOM; HKEX: 9961) ("Trip.com Group" or the "Company"), a leading one-stop travel service provider of accommodation reservation, transportation ticketing, packaged tours, and corporate travel management, today announced the proposed offering (the "Notes Offering") of US$1.3 billion in aggregate principal amount of convertible senior notes due 2029 (the "Notes"), subject to market conditions and other factors, only to persons reasonably believed to be qualified institutional buyers pursuant to Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the "Securities Act"). The Company intends to grant the initial purchasers in the Notes Offering an option to purchase up to an additional US$200 million principal amount of the Notes, exercisable for settlement within a 13-day period beginning on, and including, the date on which the Notes are first issued.

The Company plans to use the net proceeds from the Notes Offering for repayment of existing financial indebtedness, expansion of its overseas business, and working capital needs.

Proposed Terms of the Notes Offering

When issued, the Notes will be general unsecured obligations of the Company. The Notes will mature on June 15, 2029 unless repurchased, redeemed, or converted in accordance with their terms prior to such date. Holders of the Notes may require the Company to repurchase all or part of their Notes for cash on June 15, 2027 or in the event of certain fundamental changes, in each case, at a repurchase price equal to 100% of the principal amount of the Notes to be repurchased plus accrued and unpaid interest, if any, to, but excluding, the relevant repurchase date.

Prior to the close of business on the business day immediately preceding the 50th scheduled trading day before the maturity date, the Notes will be convertible at the option of the holders only upon satisfaction of certain conditions and during certain periods. On or after the 50th scheduled trading day before the maturity date until the close of business on the third scheduled trading day immediately preceding the maturity date, holders may convert their Notes at their option at any time.

The Notes contemplate cash-par settlement upon conversion. Upon conversion, the Company will pay cash up to the aggregate principal amount of the Notes being converted and have the right to elect to settle the conversion consideration for amounts in excess of the aggregate principal amount using cash, American depositary shares ("ADSs"), each currently representing one ordinary share of the Company, or a combination of cash and ADSs. Holders may elect to receive ordinary shares in lieu of any ADSs deliverable upon conversion, subject to certain conditions and procedures. The interest rate, initial conversion rate, and other terms of the Notes will be determined at the time of pricing of the Notes Offering.

In addition, the Company may redeem for cash all but not part of the Notes in the event of certain changes in the tax laws or if less than 10% of the aggregate principal amount of the Notes originally issued remains outstanding at such time, in each case, at a redemption price equal to 100% of the principal amount of the Notes to be redeemed, plus accrued and unpaid interest, if any, to, but excluding, the related redemption date. Any redemption may occur only prior to the 50th scheduled trading day immediately preceding the maturity date.

Concurrent Repurchase

Concurrently with the pricing of the Notes Offering, the Company plans to repurchase a number of its ADSs in an amount expected to be up to US$400 million pursuant to its existing share repurchase plans in off-market privately negotiated transactions effected through one or more of the initial purchasers or their affiliates as its agent (the "Concurrent Repurchase"). The Concurrent Repurchase is expected to facilitate the initial hedges by purchasers of the Notes who desire to hedge their investments in the Notes. The Company expects the purchase price in the Concurrent Repurchase to be the last reported sale price per ADS on the Nasdaq on June 4, 2024 .

The Concurrent Repurchase will be funded by cash on hand, and is generally expected to offset some of the potential dilution to the holders of the Company's ordinary shares (including ordinary shares represented by ADSs) upon conversion of the Notes, taking into the account the settlement method of the Notes.

Other Matters

Any repurchase activities of the Company, whether concurrently with the pricing of the Notes or otherwise pursuant to its share repurchase plans, could increase, or reduce the magnitude of any decrease in, the market price of the ADSs and ordinary shares and the price of the Notes.

The Company expects that potential purchasers of the Notes may employ a convertible arbitrage strategy to hedge their exposure in connection with the Notes. Any such activities by potential purchasers of the Notes following the pricing of the Notes and prior to the maturity date could affect the market price of the ADSs and ordinary shares and the trading price of the Notes. The effect, if any, of the activities described in this paragraph, including the direction or magnitude, on the market price of the ADSs and ordinary shares and the trading price of the Notes will depend on a variety of factors, including market conditions, and cannot be ascertained at this time.

The Notes, the ADSs deliverable upon conversion of the Notes, if any, and the ordinary shares represented thereby or deliverable upon conversion of the Notes in lieu thereof have not been registered under the Securities Act, or any state securities laws. They may not be offered or sold within the United States or to U.S. persons, except to qualified institutional buyers in reliance on the exemption from registration provided by Rule 144A under the Securities Act.

This press release shall not constitute an offer to sell or a solicitation of an offer to purchase any of these securities, nor shall there be a sale of the securities in any state or jurisdiction in which such an offer, solicitation, or sale would be unlawful.

This press release contains information about the pending Notes Offering, and there can be no assurance that the Notes Offering will be completed.
