Trek 3700 is a mountain bike sold between 2004 and 2015. It gained huge popularity over the years. The question is: Is it a good bike?

KEY TAKEAWAY

One of the highlights of the Trek 3700 is its suspended front fork with a 100mm travel that improves riding comfort by absorbing bumps and vibrations. Additionally, the aluminum frame is sturdy yet lightweight. It also has a relaxed geometry for a comfortable, upright riding position, which is ideal for short trips or commuting.

Let’s now scrutinize this bike more in-depth.

Is Trek 3700 a Good Bike?

Trek 3700 was a popular bike thanks to its excellent price-value ratio. Many people decided between the 3700 and Trek 4300 , which had better specs.

They tended to lean toward the 4300 because its specifications were better for a relatively small price increase (~$90).

Trek 3700’s MSRP increased from around $280 to around $410 in 2010. ( Source ) It is not officially sold anymore, so you must buy it second hand.

The 3700 was available in multiple sizes ranging from smaller ones for kids to larger ones suitable for adults (13, 16, 18, 19.5, 21, 22.5″…).

It was available in multiple colors and with rim or disc brakes , depending on the model year.

Pros and Cons of Trek 3700

Here, I summarized the pros and cons of Trek 3700.

Pros of Trek 3700

  • Quality and sturdy aluminum frame
  • Suspended front fork
  • Available for men and women
  • Comfortable geometry, allowing upright riding position

Cons of Trek 3700

  • 26-inch wheels
  • 3X drivetrain (2X and 1X became more popular thanks to their simplicity)
  • Rigid front fork

To fully understand the pros and cons, I recommend reading the following section, where I compare its features with those of today’s mountain bikes.

Main Features of Trek 3700

Below, I evaluate the main features of the Trek 3700.

Aluminum Frame

All Trek 3700 bikes are based on Alpha aluminum frames.

Aluminum is relatively lightweight and affordable yet durable. That’s why it’s so popular as a bike frame material .

Detail on the Trek 3700 frame size.

However, the overall weight of the Trek 3700 is around 14.5 kg (32 lbs), which is pretty high.

This is mainly because the suspended front fork adds a lot of weight. Remember, the Trek 3700 disc brake version is heavier than the rim brake version.

But you don’t have to fear putting this bike under much stress. It will handle everything you throw at it because of its durability.

26-Inch Wheels

Like most old-school mountain bikes, the Trek 3700 came with 26-inch wheels.

Detail on the Trek 3700 rear 26″ wheel.

Those are more agile (meaning they accelerate faster) but less stable and comfortable than the 27.5 or 29-inch wheels used today.

If you can, I recommend trying bikes with different wheel sizes, so you experience the difference.

Trek 3700 was equipped with a combination of Shimano, SRAM, Bontrager, and other 3rd party components.

Detail on the Trek 3700 saddle and seatpost.

Considering today’s standards, its handlebar was narrow, and the saddle was pretty wide.

Depending on the model, most Trek 3700 had a 3×7spd drivetrain, offering 21 gears. Some, however, had a 3×8spd gearing.

Today’s mountain bikes usually come with 2X or 1X drivetrains. This is because of their simplicity, lower weight, and less chance of cross-chaining.

On the other hand, the Trek 3700 was similar to today’s hybrid bikes because of its rigid fork and geometry. Those still use 2X or 3X drivetrains, offering a wide gear range for various terrains.

Suspension Fork

One of the main features of the Trek 3700 is the coil suspension front fork. It has 100mm travel that absorbs bumps and vibrations, making the ride more comfortable.

Its drawback is that it increases the overall weight of the bike. Models like the Trek 800 are lighter because their front fork is rigid.

Trek 3700 was sold with rim and mechanical disc brakes. The rim brakes are lighter but less effective than disc brakes in rougher conditions.

Deatil on the Trek 3700 front disc brake.

Disc brakes are known for their better effectiveness, for example, in the rain. So, if you are a heavier rider, prefer models with disc brakes.

Trek 3700 Specifications

Below, I summarize the most important technical specifications of Trek 3700. Remember, they differ based on the year:

  • Frame material: Aluminum
  • Weight: ±14.5 kg (32 lbs) depending on frame size, brakes, and year made
  • Wheel size: 26-inch
  • Brakes: Rim or disc
  • Groupset: Shimano Altus
  • Gears: 3×7spd or 3×8spd
  • Colors: Differ based on the year

Although the Trek 3700 has been discontinued for several years, it still has a place among beginners and undemanding riders.

It was a popular mountain bike because of its quality aluminum frame, front suspension, and wide enough gear range.

You can buy it for around $150 in mint condition from people who tried it but have never ridden it frequently. Check out Craigslist or eBay.

If you want to spend more on an up-to-date mountain bike from Trek, check out their website.

Trek 3700 FAQ

Trek 3700 is still worth it today if you are looking for a cheap mountain bike. It was already discontinued, so you can only buy it second-hand. Aim for a price of around $150 for mint condition.

Trek 3700 was made between 2004 and 2015.

Trek 3700 weighs ±14.5 kg (32 lbs). Its weight differs based on its size and year made. Remember, the rim brake version is lighter than the disc brake version.

Trek 3700’s weight limit is 300 lbs (136 kg).

Trek 3700 Disc review

Beginner-friendly all-rounder

trek 3700 vs 3900

Trek claim that their entry-level 3-series models are the world’s best-selling mountain bikes. Given that the 3700 Disc packs in both the obligatory 100mm-travel (3.9in) suspension fork and mechanical disc brakes for well under £400, it’s not hard to see why the specification is appealing to budget-conscious buyers. It's well built and well enough spec'ed to cope with some hard trail use but its short geometry holds it back.

Ride & handling: Solid build and newbie-friendly ride position make for a reassuring ride

The 3700 turns out to be a bike of surprising contradictions. Clearly built with the nervous newcomer in mind, the combination of a short rider cockpit with long head tube, extra headset washers and a high rise stem creates the kind of sit-up-and-look-at-the-view ride position that’ll make the Trek an easy sale on the bike shop floor. And if you are the kind of rider who’s content with pootling along looking at the view, it’s a setup that works well.

There’s a but, and it’s this – as soon as things get steeper, faster, lumpier, more interesting and more fun, the Trek’s ride position compromises what you can do with it. Point it up a steep climb and the high handlebar makes it hard to stop the front end wandering. Shove it through some fast, flowing singletrack and, you guessed it, the high handlebar compromises front end grip.

Throw it down a bumpy, rocky trail and – you must be getting the picture by now – the rearward weight distribution prevents the fork from working effectively. It takes an experienced rider to weight up the front enough to extract anything more than about half the available fork travel. We’d happily take a slightly shorter fork. It’d suit the bike’s intended purpose better – and probably save a bit of weight too.

The frustrating thing about all this is that there’s nothing wrong with the Trek’s handling, per se. It just doesn’t like being rushed. Given that there’s 100mm of actually fairly effective suspension travel up front and a pair of brakes that’ll haul it all to a stop pretty quickly, it all adds up to a bike of two halves. And, frankly, it doesn’t quite convince us.

If you’re looking for a well-built, well-specced towpath cruiser that won’t flinch if you venture a bit further afield, the 3700 Disc may be worth a look. But if your off-road adventures are likely to be a little more rugged, you need something with a geometry better suited to life in the rough.

Frame: Short, upright geometry compromises off-road handling

Trek label the aluminium tubes that make up the 3700’s chassis ‘Alpha Silver’. The exact make-up of this proprietary alloy is unclear but it’s extruded into plain gauge tubes and then shaped appropriately for the chassis in question.

The 3700’s cross-ovalised down tube provides a torsionally rigid backbone, arcing gracefully where it meets the externally butted head tube to avoid the need for extra strengthening gussetry. At the rear there’s a wishbone seatstay arrangement – something Trek have been using for a while, though the difference over regular stays is more aesthetic than functional.

The finish is a match for the company’s higher end frames but there’s no doubt that the basic plumbing contributes to the bike’s far from svelte all-up weight – 14.5kg (32lb), without pedals. Thoughtful touches include a full set of rear rack and mudguard mounts for an easy conversion to commuting or light touring duties.

Plugged into the front is Suntour’s 100mm-travel (3.9in), coil-sprung XCN fork. It boasts twin preload adjusters to help heavier or more aggressive riders tweak its set-up to suit. It is, without question, among the better forks available for this sort of money, although 100mm travel on a bike aimed at newer riders is arguably overkill. Still, it’s there if you need it.

Equipment: Decent fork and discs at this price is a good deal

You can choose to have your 3700 with rim rather than disc brakes for £25 less, if you like. It would help bring the weight down a tad, but we suspect that most riders will stump up the extra for the all-weather appeal of Tektro mechanical discs. A basic-but-functional Shimano seven-speed transmission combines with the easy rolling of Bontrager’s LT3 tyres to provide motive force.

Bontrager’s logo also adorns the bulk of the finishing kit. There’s evidence of the bean counters at work in areas such as the cheap and heavy bars, but for the most part it’s durable-looking kit that should stand up to some reasonably hard use. We like small touches like the labyrinth-sealed hubs, which should withstand wet and muddy use without flinching. Most bikes at this price make do with basic dust seals.

Pros and cons of the trek 3900 mountain bike.

When it comes to mountain biking, the Trek 3900 is a popular choice for many. However, before making any purchase, it’s important to consider both the pros and cons of the bike. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages:

As you can see from the comparison, the Trek 3900 stands out for its affordable price and durable aluminum frame. The Trek Marlin 6, while slightly more expensive, offers similar features and benefits with its Alpha Silver Aluminum frame and front suspension. The Trek Roscoe 6 and X-Caliber 7 are more advanced models with better suspension and higher price points. However, the Trek 3900 still delivers a comfortable ride with its reliable front suspension and large 29″ wheels.

  • Limited color options
  • Parts may need upgrading: Although the bike comes with a decent set of components, some riders may find that certain parts need to be upgraded over time for a better performance.
  • May not be suitable for very technical terrain: The Trek 3900 is better suited for moderate trails and more straightforward terrain compared to highly technical trails..

Things to Keep in Mind while Selecting a Mountain Bike

When selecting a mountain bike, it is critical to evaluate numerous aspects to guarantee that you choose the best option that meets your expectations. The following factors require careful consideration:

  • Frame material: When it comes to a bike’s structure, the frame is critical because it directly affects the bike’s endurance, weight, and overall feel. The materials commonly used to build bike frames are steel, titanium, aluminum, and carbon fiber. Carbon fiber frames are lighter and more rigid, but they are also quite costly. Meanwhile, steel frames are sturdier but weigh more.
  • Suspension: Mountain bikes are equipped with varying types of suspension, which include hardtail, full-suspension, and rigid. While hardtail bikes have suspension on the front wheel only, full-suspension bikes offer both front and rear suspension, and rigid bikes have no suspension at all. Hardtail bikes are well-suited for cross-country rides, while full-suspension bikes are ideal for traversing rough terrains.
  • Wheel size: Bicycles have varying wheel sizes like 26″, 27.5″, and 29″, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The 29″ is the most popular wheel size among cyclists due to its excellent stability and traction. On the other hand, the 26″ wheel size is perfect for maneuverability, while the 27.5″ option provides a balance of both maneuverability and stability.
  • Brakes: Brakes are an essential component of a bicycle and they are available in various types. Two primary types of bicycle brakes are disc brakes and rim brakes. Disc brakes are more powerful than rim brakes and can operate efficiently in any environmental conditions. On the other hand, rim brakes are comparatively lighter in weight and more cost-effective.

When choosing a mountain bike, factors such as frame material, suspension, wheel size, and brakes must be considered to make an informed decision.

8 Cores, 16 Threads @3.6GHz, Zen2. Release date: Q3 2019.

trek 3700 vs 3900

Early Q3 of 2019 welcomes the Ryzen 9 3900X, AMD’s current top of the range, third generation Ryzen flagship which raises the bar for 64-core processing on desktop CPUs. This is AMD’s first Ryzen 9 processor and it is a 12-core, 24-thread CPU based on their latest 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The 3900X has a boost/base clock of 3.8/4.6 GHz, 64 MB of L3 cache (double the L3 on the rest of 3000 series), support for 3200 MHz DDR4 system memory and a TDP of 105W. All this, plus a Wraith Prism cooler, at a very reasonable launch price of $499 USD. By comparison, Intel’s 8-core, 16 thread i9-9900K is available for $479 USD (and requires a cooler: $30+ USD). Benchmarks illustrate that the overclocked 3900X leads by a whopping 41% for 64-core processing but that the 9900K maintains a 10% lead for gaming, desktop and other sub octa-core tasks . The 3900 memory controller is significantly improved over previous Ryzen iterations and shows a better write throughput than the lower spec 3000 models, but it still shows relatively high latency which adversely impacts gaming. In terms of 64-core performance at this price point, there is no threat from Intel. The only real competitor is the upcoming (Q4, 2019) 16-core, 32-thread 3950X ($749 USD). The Ryzen 9 3900X is compatible with the new PCIe 4.0 enabled X570 motherboard via an AM4 socket, as well as 400 and 300 series motherboards.  [ Jul '19   CPUPro ]

MORE DETAILS

The 3700X is a $320 USD 8-core, 16-thread mid-range Ryzen 3000 series CPU. Out of the box, the 3700X, 3600X and 3600 achieve similar quad core speeds but the 16 threaded 3700X is 30% faster at multi-core computations than the 12 threaded 3600X . Comparing the 3700X to Intel’s i7-9700K shows that, when overclocked, the 3700X is 26% faster at 64-core computations but 13% slower for gaming and desktop (sub eight core performance) . Unlike lower end Ryzen 3000 SKUs, the 3700X comes with a half decent cooler but AMD should not have bothered since a $20 aftermarket cooler is still quieter, easier to change, and better at cooling. With a Gammaxx 400 cooler we were able to maintain a 43.25x OC during our EFps tests. We had to use a fixed clock OC (rather than Offset/PBO) to avoid significant frame drops in Fortnite. With strong single-core scores, the 3700X should offer very strong gaming performance but in reality it is let down by its memory controller, which, although significantly improved over previous Ryzen iterations, still has limited bandwidth and high latency. The heavily hyped 3700X, paired with a 2060S, offers real world gaming performance comparable to the $80 USD entry level 4-core, 4-thread Intel Core i3-9100F . At $320 USD, the 3700X offers reasonable value to full time media encoders but general desktop users, gamers and even streamers should look elsewhere. Streaming with dedicated hardware such as NVENC or a separate stream PC will nearly always result in fewer dropped frames. The 3700X severely bottlenecks a 2070S: gamers should investigate the 9600K, which is both cheaper and faster .  [ Jul '19   CPUPro ]

Trek 3700 or Trek 4300?

trek 3700 vs 3900

  • Add to quote

I've decided on an entry bike - to ride on single tracks, two tracks, bike paths, nothing agressive. I'm going to get a Trek 3700 unless the Trek 4300 is a much better deal - for the additional $90. My LBS doesn't carry the 3900. Any thoughts, advice? Thanks

Trek 4300. I have one and I love it. I use it for all the things you listed above and beat it around pretty good and it works well and has yet to quit. The fork is a little better on the 4300 and if you can afford the disc even better, but I have the orange silver model and I love it. all I've changed are the grips, saddle, and seat post.

My buddy rides a 4300 for all the terrain you mentioned. It has served him well now going on a year.

I have a 2005 Trek 4300 with disk brakes. I would defintily get the disk brakes, worth the extra money. I did upgrade the front shock this year to a Rock Shock Tora 318, the stock shock would bottom out to easily. Also, be careful of the tire, very soft. I got a flat tire from a pine needle. Changed them out and put Hutchinson Pythons on now. Have fun with whatever you end up with. See ya in the woods.

Thanks, I'm going to drop by the LBS today after work.

trek 3700 vs 3900

Definitely upgrade to the 4300 with the Alpha Aluminum Black frame technology. This is a great frame and will offer years of good service. My only complaint on my wife's 4300 is the stock front fork. Really lame for such an otherwise great bike. I plan on replacing the fork as her riding skills get better. I highly recommend going with the Shimano disc brake package if you can afford it. Best of luck!

absolutely buy the 4300 if you can swing the extra $90. And if you can't, wait two weeks for another paycheck. It's worth it for sure. Virtually every component is a step up on the 4300, albeit still on the lower end.

I faced the same dilemma in January 2005. I mentioned that I might someday try real mountain biking, instead of just the flat trails and paved bike paths, and the salesman suggested the 4300 instead, because of a tougher wheelset. I bought the 4300, and after 1500 miles of riding it, I spent a bunch more on a much more expensive bike, and just about have 1000 miles on it. Be careful, you might get hooked!

Trek 3700 Mountain Bike Review: Features and Specifications

Frame and fork.

The frame and fork of the Trek 3700 Mountain Bike strike an excellent balance between durability, comfort, and versatility, making it a great choice for both beginner and intermediate riders who want an affordable and reliable mountain bike.

The Trek 3700 Mountain Bike is made of Alpha Silver Aluminum, which is known for its lightweight and durability. The semi-integrated head tube on the frame adds to its sleek design, while the rack and fender mounts make it a versatile option for both commuting and off-road adventures.

trek 3700 vs 3900

The bike’s rigid fork and geometry make it similar to today’s hybrid bikes, providing a comfortable and stable ride. As a hardtail mountain, Trek 31700 has only a front suspension. And the coil suspension front fork with 100mm travel does a good job of absorbing bumps and vibrations, which improves the bike’s comfort level.

While the front fork’s coil suspension design adds weight to the bike, it’s a small price to pay for a smoother ride. The inner layer of metal within the coil spring absorbs bumps and shocks, while the outer layer of rubber resists movement and compression, keeping you in control and enjoying a comfortable ride.

Gears and Brakes

The Trek 3700 Mountain Bike’s gears and brakes are built for quality and performance. With Shimano C051 shifters, Shimano Altus M310 8-speed front derailleur, and Shimano Altus M280 rear derailleur, you’ll have a reliable and smooth gear system to take on any terrain.

The 2015 Trek 3700 Disc comes with Tektro M290 hydraulic disc brakes, which provide incredible stopping power, giving you the confidence to take on steep hills and rough trails. With these brakes, you can stop quickly and precisely, even in wet or muddy conditions.

trek 3700 vs 3900

The Bontrager LT3 tires and Shimano 8-speed gearing provide excellent grip and versatility on flat terrain, allowing you to ride comfortably and efficiently. Most Trek 3700 models have a 21-gear, 3×7-speed drivetrain, depending on the model. Some had a 3×8 speed gearing, though.

The Trek 3700 Mountain Bike’s rim and disc brakes offer great stopping power, with the disc brakes being the more effective option in rougher conditions. They are lightweight, reliable, and powerful, providing maximum stopping power in all conditions and terrain.

This Trek bike also features a Shimano M131 chainguard to protect the chains, ensuring your safety when riding on trails and providing extra protection against debris and obstacles.

Trek 3700 Mountain Bike’s gears and brakes, paired with its high-quality components, make it an excellent choice for riders looking for a reliable and versatile mountain bike. Whether you’re hitting the trails or commuting to work, this bike is built to handle whatever you throw at it.

Wheels and Tires

The Trek 3700 Mountain Bike’s wheels and tires are designed to handle a variety of terrains, from paved roads to rough trails.

The 26-inch wheels are more agile and accelerate faster than larger wheels, making them great for riders who value speed and maneuverability. But not so great for rolling over bumps on rough trails.

trek 3700 vs 3900

The Bontrager LT3 tires are 26 x 2.00 inches in size and are designed for both path and trail use. They’re sturdy and puncture-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about puncture or damage to your tires when exploring new trails.

These tires provide excellent grip and stability on challenging terrain, giving you the confidence to tackle even the toughest trails. What’s more, these tires are easy-rolling on city streets and paved roads, so you can ride smoothly and efficiently.

The Trek 3700 Mountain Bike’s Bontrager LT3 tires give you the performance and reliability you need to ride with confidence whether you’re riding to work or hitting the trails.

Saddle and Handlebars

The Bontrager Approved stem is also an excellent addition to the Trek 3700. It’s made from lightweight and strong 6061-T6 aluminum alloy, making it both durable and long-lasting.

As you’d have guessed, the saddle is not very comfortable, it’s a bit too stiff, so you’d need an upgrade there. But the 31.6mm seatpost offers plenty of room to adjust the bike to your size and grow with it over time, which is great.

trek 3700 vs 3900

The handlebars are quite impressive, the bar’s robust design can withstand some abuse while being used on the trail. Its handlebar’s 25.4mm diameter and 30mm rise give it plenty of space for a comfortable grip when riding.

This stem has a 25.4mm clamp diameter and a 25-degree rise, providing a comfortable riding position while also keeping you in control of your bike. The stem’s four-bolt faceplate design also ensures a secure fit, so you can focus on the trail instead of worrying about your handlebars coming loose.

Actually, the combination of the Bontrager Riser handlebar and the Bontrager Approved stem on the Trek 3700 makes for a comfortable and stable ride, no matter where you choose to take it.

Size and weight

The Trek 3700 is a versatile bike that comes in multiple sizes to fit a variety of riders.

It comes in a wide range of frame sizes, so you can find a good fit for almost anyone, whether you’re a petite rider looking for a 13″ frame or a bigger cyclist with wider shoulders looking for a 22.5″ frame.

It’s also important to note that the weight of the bike is around 32lbs (14.5 kg), which is pretty high due to the suspended front fork adding weight.

So, this might not be the ideal choice for you if you’re looking for a lightweight bike. But the bike is sturdy enough to support riders that weigh up to 300 lbs, so you don’t have to worry about your weight breaking the bike.

Ride quality and performance

Trek 3700 is a mountain bike that’ll give you comfortable trail rides and excellent performance for an affordable price. It’s a great bike for those who want a smooth ride and good performance without breaking the bank.

The suspension system helps to absorb shock and provides tame rides on both smooth and rough terrain. The bike also has excellent handling and stability, making it easy to maneuver and control. It rides smoothly, and brakes efficiently.

trek 3700 vs 3900

If you’re a beginner or intermediate rider, the Trek 3700 is an excellent choice. It has a sturdy frame that can handle a lot of stress and weight, so you don’t have to worry about breaking it. Plus, it’s easy to ride and steer, so you can focus on enjoying the ride instead of struggling to stay upright.

The bike’s components are of high quality and durable, so you don’t have to worry about them wearing out quickly. The brakes are responsive, and the gears shift smoothly and easily. And while the bike may be a bit heavy, it doesn’t affect the ride quality or performance.

However, this is not the best bike for very technical trails, as you may need more range of gears for some climbs and descents. It’s best suited for testing your limits on beginner-friendly mountain trails, and fine-tuning your mountain biking skills.

Since Trek 3700 mountain bikes are off the shelf, you won’t find brand-new ones. But there are more advanced Trek trail bikes with even better build quality and performance.

It’s the perfect bike for new trail riders and comes in seven frame sizes to fit riders of all heights. Marlin 5 is elegant and comfortable, with a ton of features that are typically reserved for more pricey bikes.

Trek Fuel EX 5

Trek 3500 Vs 3700 Mountain Bikes: The Key Differences

Although the two Trek bicycles have many similarities, they are not identical. The following is a summary of the main distinctions between them.

Brake System

trek 3700 vs 3900

It’s important to know the difference between the Trek 3500 and 3700 brake systems when shopping for a new bike.

Trek 3500 uses linear-pull or Rim brakes, while Trek 3700 uses hydraulic disc brakes. Rim brakes are less expensive and require less maintenance than hydraulic disc brakes, but they’re not as effective in rainy or muddy conditions.

Hydraulic Disc brakes provide the more stopping power and are less affected by weather, but they’re more expensive and require more maintenance. When deciding between the two, consider your riding conditions and budget.

If you’re primarily riding in dry, good weather conditions, rim brakes may be a good option for you. They’re less expensive than disc brakes and require less maintenance. However, they’re not as effective in wet or muddy conditions.

If you’re riding in varied conditions or off-road, disc brakes may be a better option for you. They provide more stopping power and are less affected by the weather. However, they’re more expensive than rim brakes and require more maintenance.

trek 3700 Suspension

The Trek 3500 features a coil fork, while the Trek 3700 features an air fork. Trek 3500 has a 75mm travel fork, while Trek 3700 has a 100mm travel fork. Trek 3500 is designed for lighter riders or those who are looking for an affordable mountain bike that can still handle some tougher terrain. Trek 3700 is designed for more experienced mountain bikers or those who are looking for better performance on rougher trails.

The coil fork on the Trek 3500 is heavier, but it also provides more stability and can handle rougher terrain better. The air fork on the Trek 3700 is lighter, but it can also be more easily damaged. Which one is right for you depends on your needs and what type of riding you’re doing.

If you’re looking for a durable fork that can handle tougher terrain, go with the coil fork on the Trek 3500. If you’re looking for a lighter fork that can handle more speed and is less susceptible to damage, go with the air fork on the Trek 3700.

If you need to adjust your air fork but are unsure of what should be the proper PSI for your weight, worry not because Trek provides a suspension calculator for their forks.

Trek 3500 has a front suspension fork, while Trek 3700 features a full suspension system. A full suspension system provides more control and comfort on rough terrain.

The 3500 drivetrain is a bit simpler than the 3700. It’s a 7-speed system with Shimano Altus derailleurs . This option is good for riders who are looking for an affordable, reliable drivetrain.

The 3700 drivetrain is a bit more advanced. It’s an 8-speed system with Shimano Deore derailleurs. This option is good for riders who want a little extra performance and durability.

Both of these systems are good options, but the 3700 drivetrain is a bit more versatile.

Trek 3500 vs 3700 weight is an important consideration when purchasing a new bike. Both bikes are lightweight options, but the Trek 3500 weighs in at just 31 pounds, while the Trek 3700 comes in at 32 pounds. So, which one is the better option for you?

Trek 3500 Vs 3700 Mountain Bikes ?

Trek 3500 and 3700 aren’t just entry-level MTBs. These two hardtails have everything to suit even the most experienced trail riders. But how do Trek 3500 vs 3700 compare?

Trek 3500 comes with linear-pull brakes, a 75mm suspension fork, and a 21-speed drivetrain, while Trek 3700 comes with mechanical disc brakes, a 100mm suspension fork, and a 24-speed drivetrain.

So, essentially, Trek 3700 is a better climber as it offers you more suspension and gears and better brakes. In the end, the advantages make Trek 3700 slightly costlier than Trek 3500.

In terms of weight and stability, however, Trek 3500 scores a massive win as it’s lighter by at least 1 pound and enjoys a shorter standover height that makes it more stable.

But overall, these two hardtails have so much in common, making them almost inseparable. So, we’ll look at the things that separate them and those that make it hard to decide between them (the similarities).

Let’s get started!

Trek 3700 Review

Trek 3500 Vs 3700 Table Comparison

Below is a table summary to compare Trek 3500 and 3700.

About Trek 3500 – Trek 3500 Review

Trek 3500 bike in an affordable entry-level hardtail bike with a 75mm SR Suntour suspension fork for exceptional bump absorption. It comes in an alpha aluminum frame, which is pretty lightweight and stronger and enjoys a longer life.

Trek 3500 is a decent performer off-road, bragging its exceptional high-traction tires, stronger wheels, and decent linear-pull brakes.

The hardtail has a shorter standover height, making it more friendly to shorter people and women, but more importantly, it offers you a neutral handling position.

Moreover, the bike comes with a 21-speed Shimano drivetrain, characterized by a 7-speed cassette and triple chainset to enable you to maneuver across challenging terrains smoothly.

Trek 3500 Size

About Trek 3700 –  Trek 3700 Review

Unlike Trek 3500, Trek 3700 promises more suspension, speed, and better disc brakes.

With its 100mm suspension fork, this hardtail allows you to take on just about any terrain. So, if you are a serious trail rider looking for something decent on a budget, you can never go wrong with a Trek 3700.

Its 8-speed cassette and triple chainset give you a combined 24 speeds, making trail riding fun. The gearing enables you to quickly and efficiently shift when taking on different terrains.

As for the brakes, you get a mechanical disc type, which outperforms their linear-pull siblings in performance and life. Their only issue is that they are costlier to maintain and even replace.

Sadly, Trek 3700 does not have the standover advantage that Trek 3500 has. In that case, it has a slightly longer standover height, making it more ideal for taller people. Some shorter people may find it somewhat uncomfortable to stand over.

How Many Speeds Is A Trek 3700

Trek 3500 Vs 3700 Differences

Although the two Trek bikes share the most common features, they are not identical. Below is a list of the notable differences between them.

1. Brake System

Trek 3500 comes with Tekro linear-pull brakes, while Trek 3700 features Tektro disc brakes.

Tekro linear-pull lever brakes are decent. They stop on a dime with the correct adjustments, especially on dry surfaces. Their primary issue is that they are less responsive in wet conditions. But cost-wise, they are cheaper to replace than disc brakes.

On the other hand, disc brakes, especially Tekro, are ever-reliable. They stop the bike almost seamlessly and generally offer you better control in all conditions. They are, however, costlier to replace and maintain.

2. Fork Suspension

Trek 3500 comes with a 75mm suspension fork, while Trek 3700 enjoys a 100mm suspension fork.

Overall, a longer suspension travel range promises more comfort over longer periods. Therefore, you can count on Trek 3700 for a smoother cycling experience off-road, more when taking on bumps.

Additionally, it enables you to ride much faster without succumbing to fatigue.

That, however, doesn’t make Trek 3500 a bad choice. No! It’s just that it doesn’t match Trek 3700 off-road, but the bike is a decent performer in other terrains.

3. Drivetrain

This is where Trek 3500 and 3700 differ most, explaining why Trek 3700 is costlier than Trek 3500.

While both bikes offer you a Shimano drivetrain with a triple chainset, Trek 3700 comes with an 8-speed cassette. That gives you a combined gearing of 24 speeds, which is enough to shift across just about any terrain smoothly.

Trek 3500, on the other hand, comes with a 7-speed cassette, which combines with the triple chainset to offer you a 21-speed gearing. While you have fewer gears on Trek 3500, the shifting performance is undisputable, and you may not even realize the difference when riding both bikes.

4. Average Weight

There is at least a 1-pound weight difference between the two bikes depending on the MTB generation. On average, Trek 3500 weighs 31.3 pounds, while Trek 3700 averages 32.5 pounds.

That makes Trek 3500 more lightweight and thus a better commuter choice as it’s more portable.

5. Stand-Over Height

This is another area where Trek 3500 has an advantage over Trek 3700. Overall, Trek 3500 has a shorter standover height than Trek 3700, making it more beginner-friendly and better for shorter riders.

Though the difference is marginal, it’s easier to stand over a Trek 3500 than over Trek 3700.

However, that is not the only advantage of standover height. A shorter standover height means the bike is more sturdy and offers you a more neutral standing position.

6. Trek 3500 Vs Trek 3700 Price

Overall, Trek 3700 is slightly more expensive than Trek 3500. On average, Trek 3500 retails at $350.00 while Trek 3700 cost about $467.

So, if you are on a budget, Trek 3500 is the best fit for you.

What Does A Trek 3500 Weigh?

Similarities between Trek 3500 and Trek 3700

Now, here are the specs that the two Trek bikes have in common

a. Frame Material

Both Trek MTBs feature alpha aluminum, which relishes a few advantages. For one, alpha aluminum is pretty lightweight, making the bikes more comfortable to pedal .

Secondly, alpha aluminum is more fatigue-resistant and stronger. It allows you to load huge weights without yielding to excess stress or fatigue.

b. Weight Limit and Limited Lifetime Warranty

Due to their stronger and fatigue-resistant alpha aluminum frames, Trek 3500 and Trek 3700 all enjoy a 300-pound load capacity. You can count on the bike to hold your vast weight and load, as long as your combined weight doesn’t exceed 300 pounds.

The best part is that Trek warrants the frame for life. You can count on its outstanding strength and performance for as long as you own the bike.

c. Wheelset

Both Trek 3500 and 3700 come with 26-inch wheels with a 2.0-inch width and enjoy the same rim and tire types. Their Bontrager 36-hole alloy rims are sturdy, offering strength and off-road stability.

On the other hand, their Bontrager connection tires come with a much smoother profile that enables them to roll smoothly off-road. As a result, these bikes are faster on trails.

Trek 3700 Vs Trek 3500 Size

Both hardtail bikes come with the same frame sizes, as shown in the table below:

Other Features

These two bikes also share the following features:

  • Riser flat bars for a more upright-position cycling
  • Schrader valve for easy pumping
  • Water cages and rack mounts
  • Nylon platform pedals that are lighter, thus comfortable to use.

Is Trek 3500 Mountain Bike Worth?

Compared to Trek 3700, Trek 3500 falls behind in brake quality, speed, and suspension range. That, however, doesn’t make it a wrong choice. Quite the contrary!

Its 75mm suspension is more than what you get from most entry-level MTBs, making it decent for entry-level cycling.

Its 21 speeds are also more than enough, given that most mountain bikes have fewer gears, and yet they are decent performers. And on the aspect of brake type, though linear-pull v-brakes are not a match for mechanical disc brakes, they are cheaper to replace.

So, yes, Trek 3500 is worth it. Besides, this bike is lighter than its 3700 siblings and enjoys a shorter standover height, making it more beginner-friendly. So, if you are on a budget but looking for a casual trail bike, you cannot go wrong with Trek 3500.

How Much Is A Trek 3700 Worth

Is Trek 3700 Mountain Bike Worth?

Trek 3700 excels in areas where Trek 3500 fails. For instance, its mechanical disc brakes are better performers than Trek 3500’s linear-pull brakes. Its 24-speed drivetrain and 100mm suspension forks outperform Trek 3500’s 21-speed drivetrain and 75mm suspension fork.

Those reasons make Trek 3700 a better trail riding choice. It also enjoys incredible specs like an alpha aluminum frame, stronger wheelsets, and comfortable handlebars.

Perhaps the only area where they fall slightly short, especially for shorter guys, is their standover height which is marginally shorter.

That aside, this bike is affordable, making it a decent pick for serious trail riders who are budget-tight but want a proper MTB for their casual adventures.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
