State Farm vs. Travelers: Which Company has the Cheapest Car Insurance?

Are you considering a new insurance policy ? With so many ads from all sorts of companies offering substantial discounts, you're probably wondering exactly how much you might be able to save.

You've maybe even narrowed it down to State Farm or Travelers  as potential options, but between the two, which carrier has less expensive prices for auto insurance?

Looking at the national average rates for both companies, State Farm is about $9 per month cheaper than Travelers.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean State Farm will be the more affordable option for each driver. Insurance carriers use a variety of complex algorithms to calculate rates, so depending on how good your credit score is or how old you are (among an array of other factors ), you could see wildly different premiums from the ones above.

Wanting to know if State Farm or Travelers is really the right carrier for you? Keep on reading to see how average prices can change based on all of the factors we've mentioned above.

State Farm or Travelers: Average Car Insurance Rates by State

State Farm and Travelers compete against each other in 31 states, with Travelers offering less expensive premiums to the average driver in 16 of them. If you live in Alabama, Delaware, Idaho, Maryland, Mississippi, or a few others, Travelers is the more affordable of the two companies when looking at the overall average rates, but State Farm is the cheaper option in most of the others.

But there's more to calculating auto insurance premiums than just where you live . Continue reading to see how other factors will affect your rates.

Find your best rate in just a few minutes

Which is the Best Company For Young Drivers?

You might already know that teen drivers generally pay a lot more for car insurance than any group out there on the road. That's usually because young, inexperienced drivers are statistically much more likely to get into an accident that results in an insurance claim, making them much riskier to insure.

That being said, that doesn't mean teen drivers can't still save money on their insurance. For example, 18-year-old drivers pay an average of $0 less a month by choosing State Farm over Travelers.

But both carriers will drop rates by the time you turn 25. Travelers offers the steepest reduction, with 25-year-olds paying less than a third of what 18-year-old drivers are charged. State Farm's average prices reduce nearly 60% during that same period.

Which is the Best Company for Retired Drivers?

Once you approach retirement age, you'll normally enjoy the most affordable auto insurance premiums you can find. You've been on the road for years, and all that experience pays off when it comes to your monthly prices for car insurance.

But who has the best rates for retired drivers between State Farm and Travelers? State Farm gets the edge, with prices for drivers 65 and older $21 cheaper than the national average for Travelers.

Which is the Best Company for Married Drivers?

You may not be aware, but insurance rates tend to be less expensive for married policyholders than they are for single policyholders. This usually boils down to married drivers having more than one car on their policy -- something quite a few auto insurance companies will reward with discounts.

If you're in the market for car insurance, State Farm tends to have the cheapest average premiums regardless of if you're married or single, with prices almost 10% more affordable for married couples and around 4% cheaper for single drivers.

State Farm vs. Travelers: Average Rates by Gender

Because men are more likely to get into collisions and get speeding tickets, they have an increased chance of filing a claim with insurance. Therefore, insurance carriers will tend to offer men more expensive prices.

On average, men see premiums about 7% per month higher with State Farm, while with Travelers, the difference is closer to 6% a month.

Looking at the data for each company specifically, State Farm comes out as the lowest option for both genders. On average, male drivers save about $8 per month and women save around $9 with State Farm compared to the average Travelers policyholder.

State Farm or Travelers: Compare State Minimum vs. Full Coverage Rates

*State minimum value indicates liability-only policies at each state's minimum bodily injury and property damage (BI/PD) limits

**Full coverage indicates state minimum BI/PD limits with collision and comprehensive coverages added to policy.

It's no secret that auto insurance can be a complicated subject for most people. Everyone needs insurance, but there are so many different limits and coverages that it can be hard to find the right policy.

The two most common policies that many drivers look at fall into two categories -- liability only (which provides property damage and bodily injury coverage for other drivers and their passengers if you cause an accident) and full coverage (which includes comprehensive and collision coverages that protect your own vehicle, alongside what you get with a liability policy).

If you're looking for state minimum limits for liability insurance , State Farm typically offers slightly less expensive rates of $99 compared to Travelers's $108. When it comes to full coverage policies with similar limits, State Farm again has the edge, with policies about $10 a month more affordable than Travelers, on average.

Is State Farm or Travelers Better for Drivers with Spotty Records?

You've probably seen plenty of commercials from car insurance companies offering great prices for good drivers, but that doesn't mean people with less-than-perfect driving records can't save money, too.

At-fault accidents and tickets will most likely raise your premiums, but is State Farm or Travelers cheaper for drivers with less-than-perfect records?

Which Company is Best for Drivers with Speeding Tickets?

State Farm policyholders can expect their rates to go up an average of $21 per month if they get a ticket, while Travelers usually raises prices around $32 a month, on average.

If you have a clean record, Travelers tends to offer the best premiums at about 4% more affordable, while State Farm has the edge for drivers with a speeding ticket.

Which Company is Best for Drivers After an Accident?

After an accident, drivers who have their auto insurance through State Farm can expect to see around an $29 -- or about 18% -- increase in their car insurance rates. Drivers who use Travelers for their insurance will see a monthly bill around $45 (or 26%) more expensive after reporting a collision to their car insurance carrier.

Overall, drivers who use State Farm end up with the cheaper prices after an accident, with monthly premiums averaging $163 compared to Travelers's $173.

Which Company is Best for Drivers with a DUI?

If you get a DUI charge on your record, it's probably going to cost you more than a simple ticket or even an accident. On average, Travelers will climb your prices about 38% after a DUI, while State Farm's average rates rise by over 25%.

If you have a DUI on your record and are looking for more affordable premiums, State Farm tends to be the much less expensive option with average rates of $179 a month compared to $205 from Travelers.

Did you know that many auto insurance carriers take your credit score into account when calculating prices? This isn't always the case (for example, Massachusetts and California are two states that ban the practice entirely), but it does affect lots of drivers out there.

Insurance companies argue that those with poor credit scores are less likely to pay their bills on time each month, which increases the risk involved on their end, while the opposite is true for those with good credit.

So, which company offers the most affordable rates for policyholders with poor, average, or good credit?

Which Company is Best for Drivers with Good Credit?

If you have a solid credit score, you'll usually find a better deal with State Farm. Drivers with "excellent" credit can save just under 35% compared to Travelers, and those with "good" scores can also expect to see savings -- around $37 or 26% cheaper every month.

Which Company is Best for Drivers with Bad Credit?

If you have bad credit, it can be somewhat of a toss-up as far as which company offers you the best premiums. Drivers with "fair" credit pay about $25 less with State Farm than Travelers, but those whose credit is considered "poor" have it flipped -- saving around $69 per month with Travelers.

Is State Farm or Travelers Better for Drivers who Work from Home or Have Short Commutes?

Did you know that the amount of time you spend in your car have a large impact on how much auto insurance carriers will charge for coverage? Typically, those who drive fewer miles will end up with more affordable prices since there's less of a chance of getting into a collision and causing an insurance claim.

For both drivers who put 6,000 miles on their vehicles each year, as well as those who average twice that figure, State Farm offers cheaper premiums than Travelers. Travelers's average prices for drivers with 6,000 annual miles come in just under $15 more expensive than State Farm. Those who drive 12,000 miles yearly can expect to pay $5 more with Travelers over State Farm.

State Farm vs. Travelers: Compare Rates for Urban, Suburban, and Rural Drivers

Where you live can play a pretty big role in how much you pay for insurance. Generally, if you live in an urban area with more cars on the road, you'll pay a little more for car insurance, while the opposite is true for people in rural areas.

Looking at these companies side-by-side, State Farm tends to offer the cheapest option for drivers in rural and urban areas, while Travelers wins in suburban areas.

In urban areas, State Farm's average prices are about $185 a month compared to Travelers's $204. Drivers in suburban ZIP codes pay around $160 with Travelers compared to State Farm's $161 monthly. Those in rural areas can expect to pay about $127 per month with State Farm and $136 with Travelers.

For example, State Farm offers cheaper prices for policyholders with an at-fault accident on their record, while Travelers is more affordable for drivers who have less-than-stellar credit scores.

Why do State Farm and Travelers offer me different rates?

Auto insurance companies take a look at several different variables when determining the premiums they charge drivers. Things like gender, where you call home, age, your driving record, and sometimes even things like your credit score can all be taken into consideration. Both State Farm and Travelers calculate rates using different factors, so each one will most likely offer different premiums. The only real way to see which company is the cheapest for you is by comparing personalized quotes from lots of different carriers.

The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

  • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
  • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
  • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
  • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
  • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Travelers Home Insurance Details

  • #10 in  Best Homeowners Insurance Companies

Founded in 1864, the Travelers Companies, Inc., commonly known as Travelers Insurance, is one of the oldest insurance companies in the United States. Travelers is a financially sound company, given the top rating of A++ from AM Best, an independent company that rates insurance carriers. Travelers offers homeowners insurance policies in 45 states as well as the District of Columbia.

Travelers offers a variety of optional coverages, including earthquake coverage, identity theft protection, and water backup coverage. There is also an option for green improvements which reimburses you for replacing items with more environmentally friendly items after a covered claim – for example, if your heat pump was damaged in a storm and you replaced it with a more energy-efficient model.

While costs can vary based on your specific situation, for our sample pricing archetype, Travelers quoted a monthly premium of $444.53, which was the highest among all of the insurance carriers we surveyed.

While Travelers does offer a variety of different discounts, including a multi-policy discount, a claim-free discount, and a discount for having an alarm system, some of the other carriers in our rating offer more discounts. There is also a discount if you have a Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified green home.

Travelers’ Claims Handling

Fifty percent of customers of Travelers who had filed a claim rated themselves as satisfied or completely satisfied with the ease of filing a claim. Additionally, only 70% of respondents rated themselves as satisfied or completely satisfied with how their claim was resolved. Both of these scores were among the lowest of any carrier we surveyed.

Travelers’ Customer Service

Travelers’ customer service also ranked among the lowest out of the companies that we surveyed, with 59% rating themselves satisfied or completely satisfied with the customer service they received. While this doesn't mean that Travelers’ customer service is bad, since we only surveyed the top insurance companies, it does mean that there are several other carriers in our rating with higher marks for customer service.

Travelers’ Customer Loyalty

Of the survey respondents with a Travelers homeowners policy an average of 69% said that they were likely or very likely to renew their current policy with Travelers. An average of 72% of respondents stated they would recommend it to a friend.

Travelers’ Value

Perhaps it is not a surprise with rankings in the bottom tier of companies that we surveyed and an above-average price that Travelers also scored near the bottom of the companies that we surveyed for overall value. Even so, an average of 78% responded that they were satisfied or completely satisfied with the value they received from their Travelers’s policy.

Bottom Line:

While it didn’t necessarily fare well in our sub-ratings, Travelers is widely available, has the highest credit rating from AM Best, and offers a wide range of coverage options and discounts. It may also be worth further investigation if you’re looking for coverage for green improvements and discounts for a LEED certification.

  • Contents replacement cost can be helpful, particularly if it has been a number of years since you purchased your policy. This optional coverage can reimburse you for the current replacement cost of personal property, rather than capping it at a preset amount.
  • Earthquake damage is not covered by a standard policy with Travelers, as is the case with most insurers. Consider optional earthquake coverage if you live in an area where this is a threat.
  • Flood insurance is not included with a standard policy, but may be required by your lender if you live in an area prone to flooding. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides flood insurance through various carriers at costs based on Federal Emergency Management Agency maps of high-risk flood areas. You can check these maps to see if you’re in a high-risk area. Flood insurance from Travelers is through its partner, Neptune Flood, a private flood insurance company.
  • Water backup coverage provides reimbursement for a failed sump pump or sewer line in your home and isn’t typically included with a standard policy.
  • Green improvement coverage provides funds to rebuild your home to a more efficient or earth-friendly standard after a loss, even if the cost of materials exceeds the limits of your standard policy.

What Doesn't Travelers Homeowners Insurance Cover?

Like most homeowners insurance companies, Travelers doesn’t include coverage for a flood or earthquake with a standard policy. Both are available as optional coverage with Travelers.

Standard policies also don’t include coverage for identity theft protection, valuable jewelry or collectibles, water damage from a failed sump pump or sewer, or rebuilding your home to be more energy efficient. All of these can be purchased for an additional cost.

How Much Is Travelers Homeowners Insurance?

According to our data, the average monthly premium for a homeowners policy from Travelers was $444.53. This was the highest of any of the carriers that we surveyed. It is important to note that the cost of homeowners insurance can vary significantly depending on the details of your home and other demographic factors, including your age, marital status, credit score, and location. For our quotes, we used a pricing archetype of a 47-year-old married individual with $300,000 in coverage on a home, $100,000 in liability, and basic home safety equipment.

What Homeowners Insurance Discounts Are Offered by Travelers?

Travelers offers many of the same discounts available with homeowners insurance policies from other companies, including:

  • Multi-policy. If you purchase your car insurance or another policy through Travelers in addition to your homeowners insurance policy, you could be entitled to a discount.
  • Protective device discount. You may be entitled to a discount on homeowners insurance if your home is equipped with smoke detectors, a home security system, a sprinkler system, or other approved device.
  • New home buyer. Buyers who have purchased a home within 12 months of purchasing a homeowners insurance policy may be eligible for a discount.
  • Green discount. Travelers offers a homeowners insurance discount of up to 5% for homes that have been Green Home certified by the Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) organization.
  • Claim-free. Homeowners who remain claim-free for a predetermined period of time may be eligible for a homeowners insurance discount.

How Do I Buy Travelers Homeowners Insurance?

Travelers sells homeowners insurance through a network of 13,500 independent agents. Either way, company representatives and agents can walk you through the process, to make sure you get the coverage you need and any discounts you are entitled to.

For a quote, you can start on the company’s website or speak to a company representative.

You can find a quote by going to the Travelers website and entering your city and state or ZIP code. You’ll get a list of agents nearby, along with the types of coverage offered by each.

However you choose to get a quote and purchase a policy, be prepared to answer some questions about your home as well as its location and contents.

Here are some of the things to know before starting the quoting process:

  • Age and size of your home, including garages and outbuildings
  • Age of your roof, and type of roofing material used
  • Whether your home is in or near a flood zone
  • Types of security devices and alarms installed, if any

You should also have on hand:

  • Inventory of appliances, computers, audio, and video equipment
  • List of valuables, including jewelry and artwork
  • Copy of your current homeowners insurance policy

Doing a little homework will help you get the best policy for your needs. The more thorough you are with itemizing details of your home and its contents, the better the likelihood of getting the best policy for your needs .

How Do I File a Homeowners Insurance Claim with Travelers?

Travelers customers can file a homeowners insurance claim either through the company website or by calling a toll-free phone number staffed 24/7.

Travelers states the fastest way to process a claim is usually through the company website, which walks you through the process with a series of questions. Whichever way you file your claim, make sure to include as many details as possible to ease the process and make sure you get the reimbursement you’re entitled to. Here are some things to consider having handy when making a claim:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Homeowners insurance policy information
  • Date of incident, and type of damage
  • Detailed description of the loss
  • Description of injuries if any
  • Inventory of items lost or damaged

Take plenty of photos to document the damage, and try to mitigate further damage if it is safe to do so. Save receipts for any tarps or other material used for this. Make sure to be available when the company sends an adjuster to your home, and be as thorough as possible when going over the damage.

The sooner you report damage, the sooner you’re likely to get help. This is particularly important after a major weather event when many homeowners may be making claims.

Travelers vs. the Competition

Travelers vs. liberty mutual.

The standard policies of Travelers and Liberty Mutual include coverage for your dwelling (and other structures, personal property, liability, guest medical expenses, and loss of use). Both companies also offer extra coverage for jewelry and water backup. But, they do offer different coverage options. Liberty Mutual has an endorsement for inflation protection, which will increase your coverage limits at the time the policy renews to keep pace with inflation. Travelers has an option for green improvement reimbursements, where for a covered claim, Travelers will provide additional coverage if you upgrade to greener materials for a version of what was damaged or destroyed.

While Liberty Mutual does offer several potential discounts on policies, including a multi-policy discount, a claim-free discount, and an autopay discount, it is the only company we surveyed that did not offer a discount for having an alarm system or other protective devices installed. Travelers offers a discount for both of those, as well as discounts for having a new or remodeled home. Travelers is available in 45 states and D.C. and Liberty Mutual is available nationwide, in all 50 states and D.C.

Learn more in our Liberty Mutual review .

Travelers vs. Farmers

Travelers and Farmers offer very similar coverage options. Both offer endorsements for green reimbursement after a covered claim, water backup, identity theft, and personal article floaters. They also both offer discounts for bundling multiple policies, being claim-free, and having a LEED green home certification.

Farmers is only available in 41 states while Travelers is available in 45 states and Washington, D.C. Travelers also has a higher AM Best rating (A++) than Farmers (A). In terms of price, Travelers had a significantly higher average monthly premium than Farmers, $444 and $244 respectively, for our sample policy. When we increased the coverage limits of the sample to $500,000 dwelling and $300,000 liability, Farmers was still the cheapest of the two, $394 to Travelers’ $616.

In our survey, 70% of the respondents for Travelers stated they were satisfied or completely satisfied with how their claims were resolved while 81% of Farmers respondents said the same. For customer service, 59% of respondents for Travelers said they were satisfied or completely satisfied with the customer service they received. Meanwhile, 80% of respondents with Farmers said they were satisfied or completely satisfied with the customer service provided.

Other Insurance Offered by Travelers

In addition to homeowners policies, Travelers offers a wide variety of insurance products, including:

  • Boat and yacht
  • Valuable items
  • Wedding and event
  • General liability
  • Management and professional liability
  • Small business owner’s policy
  • Workers compensation

You can start the quote process on the company’s website or by calling (866) 522-1338. If you’re looking to report a claim, you can reach Travelers Insurance 24/7 at (800) 252-4633 or via an email form on their website.

Mold caused by a sprinkler system or the fire department when extinguishing a blaze is covered. Homeowners insurance policies will typically cover damage from mold if it is caused by something like a burst pipe, failed hot water heater, or leaking appliance. If the mold is deemed to be the result of poor maintenance, it may not be covered.

Water damage from something like a burst pipe or failed washing machine may be covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy. You may also be covered if the damage is caused by rain after a tree has gone through the roof. But flood damage is not covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy. Depending on your location, flood insurance may be available as an option through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Standard homeowners insurance policies don’t typically include termite damage , because this type of damage is normally considered to be a maintenance issue.

Theft is covered with a standard policy from Travelers, up to the limits of your policy. If you have expensive jewelry or collectibles, consider adding optional valuable possessions coverage.

A leaky roof may be covered, depending on the cause. If the leak is caused by storm damage or a falling tree, you may be covered. If the damage is deemed the result of poor maintenance, it is unlikely to be covered.

Damage caused by a roof leak may be covered by your policy, but to be sure you should check with your insurance company.

Damage from a falling tree or branch may be covered as long as the damage is caused by wind, a storm, or other covered event. Keeping trees healthy and pruned can help prevent damage and make filing a claim easier if a problem does occur.

Dog bites or property damage caused by a pet are covered by the personal liability coverage part of a homeowners insurance policy with Travelers. Check with your agent about coverage limits or possible restrictions.

A homeowners insurance policy with Travelers includes personal liability coverage to pay medical bills and damages in the event of a visitor being injured on your property. You can purchase additional liability coverage if you feel that standard coverage is insufficient.

It can also provide coverage if someone in your household unintentionally causes damage to someone else’s property.

Fire insurance is included with a standard homeowners insurance policy from Travelers. Minimizing risk is key, and Travelers offers discounts for preventive devices such as smoke detectors and fire alarms.

Homeowners insurance generally does not cover damage from insects, because keeping pests out of your home is considered routine maintenance.

To cancel your policy, contact your insurance agent or call the dedicated billing line at (800) 842-5075. Refer to your policy agreement or ask your agent if you can expect any early termination fees.
