Best Tourist Sim Cards in Hong Kong in 2024

travel sim hong kong

When visiting Hong Kong, having a sim card for internet access is essential for easy navigation and convenient travel. With internet connectivity, you can effortlessly search for the finest restaurants, find directions to your accommodation, book taxis, and share photos with your loved ones on the go.

While roaming is an option, it can quickly accumulate exorbitant fees when traveling internationally. Therefore, we strongly recommend either acquiring an eSIM or a local sim card to take advantage of local phone rates. Luckily, obtaining either option in Hong Kong is incredibly straightforward, but it’s helpful to determine which one suits your needs best.

This comprehensive guide aims to provide you with all the relevant information regarding purchasing a sim card in Hong Kong, including the most recent pricing details and the optimal sim card for your requirements.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in hong kong for tourists.

CSL offer the best tourist sim card in Hong Kong with 12GB data for just $88 HKD. CSL have extremely wide coverage across the city. This tourist sim card is valid for 10 days which is plenty for most people visiting Hong Kong, but if you are staying longer they also offer a 30 day option for $118 HKD. You can purchase either card from the official CSL retail stores as well as 7-eleven, Circle K and Vango convenience stores across Hong Kong.

The Airalo Hong Kong eSim also uses the CSL network and costs around 94 HKD for 5GB data valid up to 30 days. Considering the price is very similar I would recommend purchasing the Airalo eSim over the CSL local sim card above. For most people, 5GB of data will be more than enough and the convenience of an eSim far outweighs the extra data in my opinion.

In fact, if you don’t require much data you can purchase an Airalo Hong Kong eSim for as little as 39 HKD which is insanely cheap.

You can purchase the Airalo eSim online when you arrive in the airport (or even before you leave home) enabling you to access the internet immediately without having to visit any stores.

Hong Kong Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Hong Kong costs 88 HKD in June 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Hong Kong will cost between $5 USD and $19 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Hong Kong which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $12 USD.

How to Get a Sim Card in Hong Kong

Identify mobile providers: CSL (Hong Kong Telecom), China Mobile Hong Kong and Three are your best options in Hong Kong.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Hong Kong

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Hong Kong at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Hong Kong then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Hong Kong have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as CSL (Hong Kong Telecom), China Mobile Hong Kong and Three. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Hong Kong are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Hong Kong with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Hong Kong eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Hong Kong. The Airalo Hong Kong eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $12 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Hong Kong without having to venture outside.

Airalo Hong Kong

Our preferred eSim provider in Hong Kong is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Hong Kong and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Hong Kong eSim uses the CSL network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the CSL networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Hong Kong.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Hong Kong eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $5 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $8.50 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $12 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $19 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $12 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Hong Kong

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Hong Kong eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Hong Kong eSim uses the Hutchison Telecommunications/Hong Kong Telecommunicationsnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Hong Kong

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Hong Kong eSim:

Unlimited data valid for 5 days – Price: $19 USD Unlimited data valid for 7 days – Price: $27 USD Unlimited data valid for 10 days – Price: $34 USD Unlimited data valid for 15 days – Price: $47 USD Unlimited data valid for 20 days – Price: $54 USD Unlimited data valid for 30 days – Price: $64 USD Unlimited data valid for 60 days – Price: $84 USD Unlimited data valid for 90 days – Price: $99 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, also known as an embedded SIM, is a type of digital SIM card that is securely built-in to electronic devices like smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. Unlike traditional SIM cards, which need to be physically inserted or removed from a device, an eSIM does not require any physical manipulation.

Instead, the eSIM is a permanent part of the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network provider. This allows users to easily switch between different mobile networks or plans without the hassle of physically changing SIM cards.

One of the major advantages of eSIM technology is its convenience, flexibility, and user-friendliness. This is especially beneficial for frequent travelers or individuals who frequently switch between networks or travel internationally. With eSIMs, users no longer need to purchase and insert physical SIM cards, which makes managing multiple mobile connections on a single device much more convenient.

To activate an eSIM, users can either scan a provided QR code from their mobile network provider or manually enter the activation details. Once activated, the device can connect to the chosen mobile network and access voice, data, and messaging services, just like with a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

Using an eSIM can be beneficial for several reasons:

– Convenience: With an eSIM, you can switch between mobile networks or plans without physically inserting or removing a SIM card. This is especially convenient for frequent travelers or those who need to use different SIM cards in different countries. – Dual SIM functionality: eSIM allows you to have two active mobile numbers on the same device, making it useful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines. – Space-saving: Since eSIMs are embedded within the device, there is no need for a physical SIM card slot, freeing up space for smaller devices or additional components. – Remote provisioning: eSIMs enable activation and management of mobile plans over the air, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card or store visit. This offers greater flexibility and convenience for managing mobile connectivity. – Future-proofing: As eSIM technology becomes more popular, more mobile networks and service providers offer support for eSIMs. Using an eSIM-compatible device ensures access to new services and offerings as they become available.

In summary, eSIM technology provides flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it an appealing choice for many users.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Buying a Prepaid Sim Card for Hong Kong in 2024

travel sim hong kong

Traveling to Hong Kong soon and planning your trip? Don't waste money on high roaming charges, but make sure you stay connected. Buying a sim card in Hong Kong is easy, but there are also plenty of amazing e-sim card plans for Hong Kong.

This is a complete guide for finding the best way to stay connected when traveling to Hong Kong in 2024. Hong Kong is a breathtakingly beautiful and bustling metropole that is home to some amazing tourist attractions and fantastic nature trails, lively traditions, unique cuisine and a melt pot of many different cultures. My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a China Mobile prepaid sim card for Hong Kong. China Mobile Hong Kong is the only prepaid sim card for tourists that offers 5G. For $78 HKD ($10 USD) you get unlimited high speed data for 7 days. That is however what the package suggest, in reality it is only 7 GB data.

On the airport in Hong Kong you can buy a China Mobile physical prepaid sim card for $88 HKD with 80 GB data at the Global Exchange office.

However, buying a prepaid sim card on arrival in Hong Kong takes a bit of effort due to its extensive sim card ID verification process, which can in some cases take up to 24 hours.

To avoided all this hassle simply order an e-sim card for Hong Kong on the internet and they are really cheap! Hong Kong e-sim card deals already start from $4 USD and for $12 USD you already get 5 GB data.

For all about HKG e-sims check out my complete guide with a comparison of the best e-sim cards for Hong Kong in 2024 .

Best e-sim cards for Hong Kong

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Hong Kong in 2024 is without a doubt an e-sim card. No need to swap a physical sim card or visit a sim card shop, you arrange everything online in just a couple minutes. You order an e-sim card on the internet, receive a QR code, scan it, follow the steps and you are instantly connected.

Also an e-sim card is the best way to avoid internet restrictions. On my recent trip to China I suffered a lot of from the internet censorship and only after I used an e-sim card instead of local prepaid sim card I was able to use the internet like normal.

When I crossed the border into Hong Kong from Shenzhen (Mainland China) I bought a local prepaid sim card in Hong Kong and I was not able to use TikTok.

With an e-sim card you are able to use TikTok without any problems. So another reason to buy an e-sim card for traveling to Hong Kong.

If you decide to buy a sim card on arrival in Hong Kong then be aware that you can only get a physical prepaid sim card, e-sim cards for tourists are not available.

Why buying a sim card for Hong Kong?

Do yourself a favor and stay connected while traveling to Hong Kong. Trust me it makes everything so much easier and more fun. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, getting directions from Google Maps or find nearby local restaurants with good reviews, finding your nearby friends, checking your online banking apps, emergencies, etc.

Overseas data plans? Did you know that they limit the internet speed? Can you still roam on a 3G connection or do you want 5G? There is 5G everywhere in HongKong.

And what about WiFi in Hong Kong? Yes, there is free public WiFi almost everywhere in Hong Kong but did you know that roaming the internet on public WiFi is through an UNSECURED connection. That means your data is not protected. If using public WiFi the use of a VPN is recommended to protect your data.

Staying connected in Hong Kong is easy and does not need to cost a lot of money. There are amazing e-sim card deals for Hong Kong and if you want to buy a local prepaid sim card in Hong Kong it is also done easy and fast.

Where to buy a sim card in Hong Kong

Hong kong airport.

The easiest way to get connected when arriving in Hong Kong is to buy a prepaid sim card at Hong Kong Airport. There are multiple sim card shops that sell sim cards for tourists at Hong Kong Airport.

There are several 7-Eleven convenience stores as well as Global Exchange shops that sell prepaid sim cards for tourists. There is a 7-Eleven already before you go through customs.

When you arrive in the Arrival Hall there is also a China Mobile and a 1010 sim card store. All these sim card stores are all located on L5 in the middle of the arrival hall. There is free WiFi available at Hong Kong Airport for your convenience.

Buying a sim card at Hong Kong Airport is very convenient, but expect to pay tourist prices compared to the sim card plans you can find in the city center of Hong Kong. But if you do a little effort you can find a sim card plan with 30 GB data for around $12 USD.

Keep in mind that at Hong kong International Airport they do not sell e-sim cards. They only sell physical prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Check out my vlog with my experiences arriving at Hong Kong Airport and buying a prepaid sim card for tourists, including the opening times, prices, etc.

prepaid sim card for tourists hong kong airport

As of June 2024 they have a great prepaid sim card offer at the Global Exchange stores. They set up the sim card for you, you give them your passport, they do the registration for you and you get this amazing tourist sim card deal.

  • 80 GB data + 1,000 minutes = $88 HKD - $11 USD

You can only buy this physical prepaid sim card in person at the airport, not on the internet. Apart from the fact that it comes with the internet censorship in Hong Kong, TikTok is blocked on this sim card for example, this is of course one of the best Hong Kong prepaid sim card deals for when visiting Hong Kong in 2024.

If for some reason you were not able to buy a sim card on arrival at the airport then I recommend you to go to any of the official mobile internet provider stores in any of the malls. There are so many around. Just type in your preferred provider on Google Maps and go to the nearest store.

Convenience stores

Traveltomtom does NOT directly recommend buying a sim card from a 7-Eleven or any other of the convenience stores in Hong Kong. Why not? These employees are not specialized in selling sim card and most important you will have to do the activation all by yourself. In an official retail store they do everything for you AND they make sure it works before you walk out of the store.

The sim card registration process in Hong Kong is pretty complicated if you have to do it yourself. You will have to register online, scan your passport, provide all the details and then send it for approval and wait. In some cases people have reported to wait for up to 24 hours to get approved.

Order a sim card for Hong Kong online

To avoid all the hassle of buying a sim card for Hong Kong on arrival you can also order one on the internet. You are connected as soon as you land in Hong Kong. Order an international prepaid sim card for Hong Kong online and get it delivered to your home address before your trip. You can already find Hong Kong prepaid sim cards for $24.90 USD with 10 GB data.

However, the most convenient way to get data on your phone when traveling to Hong Kong in 2024 is an e-sim card. Order your e-sim card for Hong Kong directly online. Click here for my comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Hong Kong in 2024 .

Registration process

Just like in most countries you will need your passport to buy a sim card in Hong Kong. Before March 2022 you could buy a prepaid sim card without any form of identification, but things changed and a copy of your passport will be taken in the phone store when you buy a prepaid sim card. Your Hong Kong sim card will be registered on your name and passport number and you get a sim card with a Hong Kong phone number starting with +852.

IF you buy a prepaid sim card in a convenience store you will have to do the sim card registration yourself and it is a 6 step verification process and you will need to wait for it to be approved which can take up to 24 hours.

To avoid the registration you can opt for an international sim card or order an e-sim card for Hong Kong online , they only require your email address.

Internet censorship in Hong Kong

In huge contrast with China mainland there is much less internet censorship in Hong Kong. Most social media apps work like normal, the biggest exception is that TikTok is blocked in Hong Kong and you will need a VPN to use TikTok. All other social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Youtube, WhatApp work like normal.

Google Maps, safari, Google Chrome all work without any issues.

Mobile internet providers in Hong Kong

There are 4 mobile internet operators in Hong Kong that sell prepaid sim cards for tourist:

  • CSL - Hong Kong Telecom
  • China Mobile Hong Kong - CMHK

All of them have excellent network coverage throughout Hong Kong and its outlining areas and islands.

Best 4G/5G network in Hong Kong in 2024

Hong Kong is one of the most advanced countries when it comes to 5G mobile internet. Almost all of the country and especially the tourist attraction in Hong Kong are covered with a 5G signal and that is not limited to 1 or 2 providers, but all of them.

I will show you the 4G/5G network coverage maps and you will understand what I mean.

csl 4g 5g network coverage map hong kong 2024

Smartone 4G/5G network coverage map

smartone 4g 5g network coverage map hong kong 2024

As you can see from the above Hong Kong mobile internet coverage maps all tourist destinations and best places to visit in Hong Kong are very well covered with a 4G/LTE/5G signal. In fact there is pretty much 5G everywhere in Hong Kong.

We can also clearly conclude that 3 Hong Kong and China Mobile have a much smaller mobile data network compared to CSL and Smartone. Smartone has the best 4G/5G mobile network in Hong Kong in 2024.

The big bummer is that Smartone, CSL and Three Hong Kong do not let prepaid sim cards use the 5G network. Only China Mobile allows its prepaid costumers to use the 5G network.

Prices prepaid sim cards in Hong Kong in 2024

All prices and info below is update per June 2024. Prices are in Hong Kong Dollar and 100 HKD = $12.8 USD and $1 USD = 7.8 HKD.

china mobile hong kong prepaid sim card for tourists 2023

A CMHK prepaid sim card for tourists costs HK$ 78 and gives you 7 GB data + 200 minutes + 1 GB data in Macau and mainland China. HK$ 78 = $10 USD.

The CMHK sim card package will say unlimited data, but don't be fooled. After 7 GB data on max speed the internet speed will be reduced to 384 Kbps, which is barely enough for using WhatsApp.

All the above CMHK prepaid sim cards are sold in the official CMHK retail stores around Hong Kong as well as in 7-Eleven, Circle K and Vango Convenience Stores. If buying a CMHK prepaid sim card Traveltomtom advices to visit one of the CMHK stores where they will instantly activate your prepaid sim card on your passport.

For more info check the China Mobile Hong Kong website . China Mobile Hong Kong only offers physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are not available.

At CSL. offer 2 different plug and play Discover Hong Kong Tourist SIM Cards. One for 8 days and one for 5 days and both prepaid sim card plans include unlimited calling time in Hong Kong.

  • 3 GB data for 5 days = $88 HKD - $11 USD (now upgraded to 12 GB data for 10 days)
  • 8 GB data for 8 days = $118 HKD - $15 USD (now upgraded to 32 GB data for 30 days)

Data is valid in Hong Kong AND Macau! So this is a great sim card if you are visiting Hong Kong and Macau in the same trip. These sim cards also include free CSL. WiFi service wherever you can find a CSL. WiFi signal in Hong Kong.

If you finish the data of your starter package, CSL. Offers the following data top up package:

  •  3 GB data in HKG and Macau + unlimited calls = $48 HKD - $6 USD

All the above CSL. prepaid sim cards are sold in the official CSL. retail stores around Hong Kong as well as in 7-Eleven, Circle K,  Vango Convenience Stores and the 1010 mobile shop at Hong Kong International Airport in the arrival hall level 5. Check the  CSL. website  for more info.

Unfortunately CSL. does not offer a 5G prepaid sim card for Hong Kong, only monthly plans. So if you are a tourist visiting Hong Kong and you want to roam on 5G then a CSL. tourist sim card is not recommended. CSL. only offers physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are not available.

3 Three Hong Kong

3 Hong Kong offers 4 prepaid sim cards plans for tourists:

  • 2 GB for 30 days + 2,000 minutes = $50 HKD - $6.4 USD
  • 12 GB for 30 days + 2,000 minutes = $100 HKD - $12.8 USD
  • 20 GB for 30 days + 2,000 minutes = $150 HKD - $19.2 USD
  • 36 GB for 30 days + 2,000 minutes = $200 HKD - $25.5 USD

Unfortunately Three Hong Kong does NOT offer 5G on prepaid sim card for tourists, just like CSL the fastest data speed is 4G/LTE. Check out the Three Hong Kong website  for more info. Three Hong Kong only offers physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are not available.

The Three Hong Kong prepaid sim cards are available self-service kiosks (Live Box) or in authorized 3 Hong Kong stores. You can also purchase Three Hong Kong sim cards at the Hong Kong Airport in the 7-Eleven.

A Smartone prepaid sim card for tourists costs $78 HKD which is $10 USD and comes with the following data plan:

  • 5 GB data + 15 minutes valid for 30 days in Hong Kong and Macau

Also for SmarTone counts that 5G is only for post paid costumers and not for prepaid sim cards for tourists.

SmarTone tourist sim cards are available at Circle K and the official SmarTone stores as well at vending machines at Mong Kok East Station and Kowloon Tong station. Check the  SmarTone website  for more info. SmarTone only offers physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are not available.

Best sim card for Hong Kong in 2024

International prepaid sim cards that you order on the internet are more expensive than local prepaid sim cards. The cheapest way to get data on your phone when traveling to Hong Kong is a local prepaid sim card.

However, these local prepaid sim cards you can only buy on arrival in Hong Kong. The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Hong Kong in 2024 is an e-sim card. You can already get an Airalo or Nomad e-sim card for Hong Kong with 5 GB data for just $12 USD and you are online as soon as you land.

However, if you are looking for the cheapest way to get connected when traveling to Hong Kong then you should look into getting a local prepaid sim card on arrival. They are slightly cheaper than the e-sim cards for Hong Kong you can order on the internet.

Defining the best Hong Kong prepaid sim card is a little difficult as all of the mobile internet provider have a very extensive network and cover all the tourist destinations in Hong Kong with minimal a 4G/LTE signal.

However, after comparing all the prepaid sim cards for tourists I found out that only China Mobile offers 5G on tourist sim cards. CSL, Smartone and Three do NOT offer 5G, only 4G/LTE on prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Because China Mobile also has a great prepaid sim card deal for just $10 USD with 7 GB data for 7 days including calling minuted, Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that China Mobile is the best prepaid sim card in Hong Kong in 2024. You can only buy physical prepaid sim cards in Hong Kong, e-sim cards are not available in stores in Hong Kong for prepaid sim cards for tourists.

If you want an e-sim card for traveling to Hong Kong then I recommend you to read my complete guide for finding the best e-sim card for your trip to Hong Kong in 2024 .

Keep in mind that with a China Mobile prepaid sim card you will experience internet censorship and Tiktok will not work, this in fact counts for all local prepaid sim cards that you buy in Hong Kong.

Overall there is not that much difference in the available prepaid sim cards in Hong Kong.

Also keep in mind that if you are traveling to mainland China or Macau roaming charges may apply. However, some prepaid Hong Kong sim card plans offer free roaming in Macau and/or mainland China.

Some last tips for buying a sim card in Hong Kong

Do hong kong prepaid sim cards auto-activate once you insert them into your phone.

Since March 2022 the rules for registering prepaid sim cards in Hong Kong have changed. You will need your passport for registering a prepaid sim card for Hong Kong. Traveltomtom advices to always buy a prepaid sim card in an official retail store where it is activated for you by a specialist and they can also advice you the best on the current prepaid sim card plans for tourists.

How to get from Hong Kong Airport to the city

The city is very well connected with the city by public transport. Taking a bus is easy, but the most convenient way is to take the Airport Express train. Busses and trains have free public WiFi. Uber is officially illegal, but still widely used. An Uber ride from the airport to the city can easily cost you around $40 USD.

Hong Kong SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Apr 20, 2024 | Asia , China , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Hong Kong soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Hong Kong SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Hong Kong in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Hong Kong.

If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Chinese – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong SIM cards

Best SIM Cards In Hong Kong

If you’re traveling in Hong Kong, we recommend using a SIM card from China Mobile Hong Kong, CSL, Three, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Asia, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other Asian countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Hong Kong

You can either buy a Hong Kong prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an Asian prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by China Mobile Hong Kong, CSL, and Three.

Hong Kong

Planning your upcoming adventures? Travel by bus! (It's cheap!)

China mobile hong kong sim cards.

China Mobile Hong Kong offers four different types of tourist plans:

  • 3 GB, valid for 1 day for HKD 18 ($2.29)
  • 2 GB, valid for 3 days for HKD 38 ($4.84)
  • 3 GB, valid for 5 days for HKD 48 ($6.12)
  • Unlimited data, valid for 10 days for HKD 30 ($3.82)

CSL SIM Cards

CSL has two different tourist plans available:

  • 3 GB, valid for 5 days for HKD 88 ($11.22)
  • 8 GB, valid for 8 days for HKD 118 ($15.04)

Three SIM Cards

Three offers three main SIM-only plans for tourists:

  • 1 GB daily, valid for 30 days for HKD 48 ($6.12)
  • 2 GB daily, valid for 30 days for HKD 78 ($9.94)
  • 5 GB daily, valid for 30 days for HKD 188 ($23.97)

Overall, we think Three is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person.

That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Hong Kong Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the OneSimCard works in more than 200+ countries and gives you data for $0.01 per MB. Hong Kong is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Another option is to purchase a prepaid Asian SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer packages that cover Hong Kong:

  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $24.90
  • 10 GB, valid for 14 days for $49.90

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Hong Kong or, if you’re traveling to multiple countries, an eSIM plan for Asia.

How To Buy A Hong Kong eSIM Card

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone.

If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Hong Kong.

Curious? Learn more about eSIMs for travelers on eSIM Roamers .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo , a reliable eSIM provider.

  • 50 GB, valid for 90 days for $100
  • 100 GB, valid for 180 days for $185

The options mentioned above are part of Asialink and offer coverage in 13 countries, including Hong Kong.

  • 10 GB, valid for 180 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 365 days for $69

Airalo Discover esim global

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country.

Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip.

In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

If you’re only traveling to Hong Kong, the information found on this page will be good for your travels.

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Hong Kong

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Hong Kong or even an eSIM for your travels in Hong Kong is pretty straightforward.

You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Asia without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase an Asia or global plan.

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Hong Kong if you wish to have data upon your arrival.

This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Hong Kong SIM cards are available from various mobile network operators in the region, and they can be bought at airports, convenience stores, or telecom shops. It's important to note that your mobile device must be unlocked (not tied to a specific carrier) and compatible with the network frequencies used in Hong Kong.

eSIMs in Hong Kong offer a hassle-free alternative, eliminating the need to swap out physical SIM cards. Pocket WiFi is a portable device that gives you WiFi access wherever you go, perfect for travelers, especially groups, since it can handle multiple devices at once.

How to Use Hong Kong SIM Cards

Before using Hong Kong SIM Cards, you need to set up the APN. Here is the APN Setting Methods:

3 Pros of Using Hong Kong SIM Cards

3 Pros of Using Hong Kong SIM Cards

1. Convenience

Using a local Hong Kong SIM card allows you to easily make local calls, send SMS messages, and use mobile data without incurring expensive international roaming charges. This is particularly useful for travelers who need to stay connected with local contacts, make reservations, or navigate the city using online maps and apps.

2. Cost-Effective Data

Many Hong Kong SIM card providers offer a variety of plans tailored to different needs, including pay-as-you-go options and short-term packages designed for tourists, which can provide further flexibility and cost control.

3. High-Speed Internet and Good Coverage

Hong Kong is known for its advanced telecommunications infrastructure, offering high-speed 4G LTE and increasingly widespread 4G connectivity. By using a local SIM card, you can take advantage of these fast mobile networks for seamless internet access while on the go.

3 Cons of Using Hong Kong SIM Cards

3 Cons of Using Hong Kong SIM Cards

1. Limited Coverage

Hong Kong SIM cards may not provide coverage outside of Hong Kong. This means that if you travel to other countries, you may not be able to use your phone unless you purchase a separate SIM card for that country.

2. High Costs

Depending on the provider, the costs of using a Hong Kong SIM card can be quite high, especially if you are using data services. This can result in expensive bills, particularly for tourists or business travelers who need to use their phones frequently.

3. Compatibility Issues

Not all phones are compatible with Hong Kong SIM cards. If your phone is locked to a specific network or if it does not support the frequencies used in Hong Kong, you may not be able to use a local SIM card. This could force you to rent a phone or buy a new one, which can be inconvenient and costly.

3 Tips for how to Choose Hong Kong SIM Cards

3 Tips for how to Choose Hong Kong SIM Cards

1. Determine Your Needs

Before choosing a SIM card, determine your needs. Are you going to be making a lot of local calls, or will you mainly be using data? Some SIM cards offer unlimited local calls, while others offer large amounts of data. If you're going to be in Hong Kong for a long time, consider getting a monthly plan.

2. Compare Different Providers

There are several mobile network providers in Hong Kong, including CSL, 3, SmarTone, and China Mobile. Each provider offers different plans and rates, so it's worth comparing them to see which one offers the best value for your needs.

3. Consider Convenience

Some SIM cards can be purchased online and picked up at the airport, while others can be bought at convenience stores throughout the city. Consider which option is more convenient for you. Also, check if the SIM card is easy to top up. Some can be topped up online or at convenience stores, while others require you to visit a specific store.

The Best eSIM Options for Visiting Hong Kong

So you’re heading to Hong Kong and need a convenient, quick way to get data on your phone? An eSIM may be your new best friend.

Gone are the days of queuing for SIMs in airports . The eSIM has enabled mobile operators to move the customer journey online. The question now is, which eSIM option do you choose when visiting HK? That’s where we’re here to help.

What is an eSIM?

Simply put, an eSIM is a digital version of a physical SIM card. Since 2018, most mobile devices now come with an eSIM embedded directly into the device. This means that changing carriers, data providers, or service plans can all be done with just a few clicks and swipes.

Pros to an eSIM

travel sim hong kong

This virtual version of a SIM is more convenient for several reasons. For starters, if you have separate work and personal phones, you can now have both lines operating from the same device. Some devices allow for up to eight eSIM profiles to be stored (with two active at a time), making it much easier to switch between carriers or data plans. No need to physically add or remove cards each time.

But perhaps the biggest benefit of an eSIM is when traveling internationally. Just set up your eSIM with an international plan before (or after) you set off and you’ll be connected the moment you arrive.

Cons to an eSIM

While eSIMs are definitely much more convenient than a physical card, there are still some downsides. If you currently use one SIM between several devices, you will need to go through the eSIM activation process each time you swap devices. Plus, not all carriers allow for transfers between devices.

Also, if you are concerned about your data provider tracking your location, you can’t physically remove an eSIM like you can with a normal card so there’s nowhere to hide!

eSIMs in Hong Kong: Your options

eSIMs in Hong Kong are definitely a growing market. And that’s despite the fact that phones brought in China do not feature eSIM capabilities and only some models in HK do. It is not illegal to use eSIMs in Hong Kong though, it is just not as common as other locations. That being said, most local providers now offer eSIM options. The four main providers here are;

  • 3 Hong Kong (includes SoSIM)
  • CSL Mobile (by HK Telecom)
  • China Mobile HK (CMHK)
  • SmarTone HK

Both local and international providers all offer varying location packages. Some include just Hong Kong on its own, while others cover HK and Macau, HK and Mainland China, and multiple destinations in the APAC region under one plan.

However, regardless of whether it’s an eSIM or physical SIM, if you are getting a local card in HK you must register it before you can use it. Real-name registration is mandatory in Hong Kong and you must upload your identification document for successful registration. Some carriers will approve your registration almost instantly whereas for others, it can take a few days. Some international eSIM providers will also require ID before activation.

eSIMs in Hong Kong: Local Carriers

travel sim hong kong

Here are some of our top picks for local carriers who offer eSIMs.

There are other local providers who offer amazing deals on prepaid physical SIMs but still don’t offer prepaid options for eSIMs.

3 Hong Kong

3 Hong Kong offers a range of voice and data plans for visitors to Hong Kong. Plans that include coverage for mainland China are also available. Basic DIY prepaid SIM options include 2GB, 12GB, 20GB, or 36GB options, and have set time limits of 24 hours, 30 days, and 365 days. Plan prices vary from HK$ 50.00 to HK$ 270.00 based on data amount and length but minimum spend is HK$ 50.00 . 3 Hong Kong DIY SIMs run on a 4.5g network and LTE coverage is fairly reliable across Hong Kong, especially among the main tourist hot spots.

Some users have shared issues with 3 Hong Kong taking a few days to approve the real name registration process, which may not be ideal if you are only visiting for a short time.

Part of the 3 Hong Kong group, SoSim is probably the best value-for-data plan across HK. They have separate options for data only, voice only, and combo packages. Data-only options start from as little as 500MB for 1 day at HK$ 10.00 , 2GB for 2 days at HK$ 18.00 , and 5GB for 7 days at HK$ 25.00 .

Their best packages include 60GB, 5000 local voice minutes, unlimited streaming data (for Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV etc), 30 days anti-scam service at only HK$ 50.00 . Various travel data packages are also available that include most regions around the globe at a range of data amounts and prices.

SoSIM also allows data sharing across devices, which is a big plus. However, the website and corresponding app are a little less user-friendly than some of the other options out there.

eSIMs in Hong Kong: International Carriers

travel sim hong kong

If you are looking for data only options, then you can consider one of the global companies. Many of these don’t require real-name registration which makes the whole process a bit smoother and it means you can get your travel data organized before you land in Hong Kong.

Airalo is a popular eSIM provider, and for good reason too. It has one of the fastest data speeds on the market, especially for the cost. If you’re looking for a data-only package then Airalo is a great option.

Airalo roams using CSL in Hong Kong, which has extensive LTE coverage across all regions in the city. Packages start at as little as 1GB for 7 days at HK$ 40.00 , 3GB for 30 days at HK$ 65.00 , 5GB for 30 days at HK$ 94.00 , and 10GB for 30 days at HK$ 149.00 .

If you’re traveling around Asia, then consider the Asialink eSIM. It includes China, HK, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and South Korea. Packages go all the way up to 100GB for 180 days at HK$ 1,447.00 .

Getting an Airalo eSIM is extremely user friendly. The whole process of selecting your package, signing up for an Airalo account, payment, and accessing the QR code to activate your SIM is quick and easy. You also get access to 24-hour customer support (English only) and a handy app to check your data usage.

One of the more expensive options, Holafly manages to keep customers happy with its unlimited data plans that range from 5 days ( HK$ 149.00 ) to 90 days ( HK$ 774.00 ). This is a great option if you are worried about running out of data. However no voice/text options are included and the download speed is somewhat slower than other carriers.

Overall, the installation process is easy, no real-name registration is required, the app is decent and 24-hour customer service is provided in several languages — perfect for all kinds of travel.

One of the cheapest options on the market, Nomad has three options available (all of which are data only plans); HK only, APAC (with either 14 or 19 countries across the region) and global (either 109 or 138 countries worldwide). For the Hong Kong-only option, there are various data limits available from 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, 10GB, 15GB, and 20 GB lasting a minimum of 7 days and a maximum of 45 days. Data roams using CSL and China Mobile, both of which have good coverage across the city.

The app makes it easy to top up data but make sure you do this before your plan expires as otherwise you will need to redo the initial activation process again. No real-name registration is required and a good customer service platform is provided, but only in English.

Maya Mobile

Maya Mobile offers data plans for HK only as well as an ‘Asia’ card which features 12 countries in the region. In Hong Kong, data roams using CSL and the speed is consistent, usually maintaining LTE signal across the city. Plans come in either 5, 10, 15, or 30 day options from 3GB up to an unlimited data plan with no daily data cap. However, speed will be throttled to 1Mbps after 30GB has been used within 30 days (most travelers typically consume less than 30GB a month). Prices start at HK$ 55.00 (3GB, 5 days) and go up to HK$ 460.00 (unlimited data, 30 days).

Data speeds are suitable for basic phone use e.g. social apps, communication, and music but they don’t recommend using their data packages for downloading large files or streaming tv shows. Data can also be tethered across other devices for most plans, which is always a handy feature.

Overall, the Maya Mobile user experience is a smooth one. They currently don’t have an App which may be one small drawback if you like to keep track of your data. But this can still be easily done by logging into your account on their website.

While we do our best to ensure it’s correct, information is subject to change.

Best eSIM for Hong Kong (Compared in 2023)

Buying a Hong Kong eSIM before you travel is a great idea!

Roaming is insanely expensive these days, and buying a SIM when you land is an annoying experience. That is why I have been using eSIMs for years.

At A Glance: Our Favorite Hong Kong eSIMs

  • Best Hong Kong eSIM Maya
  • Unlimited Data Hong Kong Holafly Hong Kong
  • Cheapest Hong Kong eSIM Nomad
  • Best Regional Plans Ubigi

So many Hong Kong eSIMs are on offer today – from short-term options to unlimited data and 5G. And with Hong Kong being such a tech country, you know it is going to be fast data too.

Below I have rounded up all the best Hong Kong eSIMs so you can compare and choose the right option for you.

ESIM Product Comparison

I often head straight to Maya Mobile for my Hong Kong eSIMs because their mix of per GB packages and unlimited data options are ideal for travelers.

Below is a summary of Maya’s Hong Kong eSIMs (all 30-day plans):

  • 1 GB – $5.00
  • 3 GB – $8.00
  • 5 GB – $17.00
  • 10 GB – $25.00
  • Unlimited – $69.00
  • Unlimited (Asia/Pacific+) – $59.00

Maya also lets you share your data via hotspot or tethering, so their unlimited data plans are great for work or sharing with a loved one.

In  Hong Kong, Maya uses CSL which has great 4G, so you should be good to go for data speeds too!

  • Cheapest plans
  • Great mix of plans
  • Hotspots/Tethering with unlimited data
  • CSL network
  • Not the cheapest per GB

Airalo Xie Xie

Airalo Hkmobile offers you four  Hong Kong eSIMs for up to 10 GB, which should be enough for most people during their trip. The prices per GB are cheaper than Maya when you go over 3 GB, so if you need larger packages that are not unlimited, then they are the best option.

  • 1 GB/7 Days – $5.00
  • 3 GB/30 Days – $8.50
  • 5 GB/30 Days – $12.00
  • 10 GB/30 Days – $19.00

Airalo works with CSL on 4G LTE as well, so your speeds will be just the same as with Maya and many other eSIM providers.

They also allow sharing of data, which is perfect for working or families. And if you run through the data too quickly, you can easily top-up via their eSIM App .

  • Plans: 1 to 10 GB
  • Hotspots allowed
  • Affordable price per GB
  • No Unlimited data

Holafly Hong Kong

Who wouldn’t want to travel around Hong Kong with an unlimited data eSIM? Holalfy is hard to beat with its variety of unlimited data eSIMs, ranging from 5 days to 3 months:

  • 5 days for $19
  • 7 days for $27
  • 10 days for $34
  • 15 days for $47
  • 20 days for $54
  • 30 days for $64
  • 60 days for $84
  • 90 days for $99

In Hong Kong, Holafly uses Hutchison Telecommunications and Hong Kong Telecommunications, which don’t rank in the top 3, but given there are 250 providers in a small place like Hong Kong, you should have no issues connecting.

Note: If you want to work via your phone hotspot or share your data, then Holafly won’t work. They don’t allow hotspots or data sharing. You are better off with Maya Mobile’s 30-day data plan in this case.

  • Unlimited data - 1 -90 days
  • Affordable per day
  • Great connection speed
  • No data tethering allowed

Nomad is another of the most reputable Hong Kong eSIM providers out there. They have eSIMs for all sorts of countries, regions, and worldwide offers too.

For Hong Kong Nomad uses Chungwa which is great news for a great connection and speed while surfing the internet while you are there.

Their plans and prices are as follows:

  • 1GB / 7 Days – $4
  • 3 GB / 15 Days: $8
  • 5 GB / 15 DAYS: $12
  • 10 GB / 30 DAYS: $18
  • 15 GB / 30 DAYS: $26

If you feel restricted by their 15-day plans for the lower GB sizes, you can also grab their more expensive plans for longer periods. I just don’t think it is worth it!

I have used Noamd extensively in my travels and can only say good things about them. My go-to is Maya or Airalo, but sometimes Nomad has the best prices – just not in this case by a few dollars.

  • Competitive prices
  • Lots of options
  • Slightly more expensive

BNESIM has quite a lot of Hong Kong eSIM data plans that are actually quite affordable. You just have to ignore all the numbers that look confusing and compare the prices in the table at the start of the post.

Here are BNESIMs offers:

  • 1 GB/30 Days – $4.66
  • 3 GB/30 Days – $13.54
  • 5 GB/30 Days – $21.92
  • 10 GB/30 Days – $41.90
  • 20 GB/30 Days – $81.93
  • 50 GB/30 Days – $175.97
  • 100 GB/30 Days – $290.48

All these prepaid eSIMs are valid for 30 days but not that many of them are cost-effective when compared to the likes of Maya or Airalo .

  • Large packages up to 100 GB
  • Expensive per GB

Ubigi is a great option for regional Asia eSIMs. They offer 5G connections for their huge range of plans for Asia  including Hong Kong island.

Many of their offers for Hong Kong eSIMs for people who travel a lot are great. You just have to dive into their list of options and see what works for your trip.

Here are some quick examples:

  • 500 MB/1 Day – $3
  • 3 GB/30 Days – $19

If you just want a simple Hong Kong eSim, then skip past Ubigi as it’s not worth your trouble for a simple internet connection.

  • Asia-wide plans
  • Tethering is allowed
  • Few Hong Kong options

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is the digital equivalent of a SIM card.

You know about normal SIM cards. The small chip you put into your phone when you first buy it. The one that connects you to the local network.

ESIMs are inside your phone instead. So, you don’t have to get hold of a SIM and insert it. Instead, you download the information you need to connect to your chosen network. You can switch around too.

Benefits of Getting a Hong Kong eSIM

Here are some of the great benefits of getting an eSIM for Hong Kong:

  • Install in minutes via online purchase
  • Use your current phone number, and eSIM only for data
  • Compare prices and change plans easily
  • No more wasted SIM cards and garbage

ESIM Compatible Phones

Here is our list of phones compatible with eSIMs in case you are not sure if yours will work. Be sure to read the fine print for each supplier too, as a country like Hong Kong has eSIM restrictions for phones bought in Hong Kong or mainland China.

You can also check if your device will work with eSIMs. Just call this number – *#06# and if an eSIM identification number (EID) comes up then your device will work with an eSim.

Holafly eSIM User Reviews

Trustpilot

DON’T stress about your phone service when you travel abroad! I used Holafly to travel home to California this year. The instructions were super easy to follow and I had no problems with the service for the whole 20 days that I used it. It was nice not to worry about how much my phone company was going to charge me for service abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Hong Kong eSIM

When does my data plan begin?

Your plan activates immediately upon connecting your eSIM to any supported network. For example, if you bought a 1-day plan and you activate your plan at 10 AM, it remains active for a full 24 hours, concluding at 10 AM the following day.

Can I make phone calls and send messages with my Holafly eSIM?

The Hong Kong eSIM only allows you to use mobile data. It does not include a local phone number for mobile calls or messages. You can still make calls using apps like WhatsApp.

Which devices work with the eSIM card?

You can check if your smartphone is eSIM compatible here.

When will I receive my eSIM?

Once you purchase your eSIM, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions to install it immediately using a QR code or manual code. Remember that once the eSIM is purchased, it cannot be returned.

Can I keep my WhatsApp number?

You don’t need to do anything to keep your WhatsApp number. You’ll automatically keep your number, contacts and conversations.

How quick is the Holafly eSIM?

The Holafly eSIM offers maximum speed coverage (3G4GLTE). But bear in mind that in some areas of limited coverage there may be a lower speed connection.

Do I have to activate data roaming on my device?

Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your mobile settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already set up the Holafly eSIM.

What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM’s QR code?

If you cannot find the code, please contact our 24/7 customer support team at [email protected] or our online chat function. We will resend the code to your email.

What happens if I use up my data or my days of validity?

If you use all your data or run out of days, your eSIM card will no longer work and you will lose internet connection.

What eSIM data plan should I choose?

Whichever is available for your destinations and suits your travel needs better! You can choose plans from 1 to 90 days.

Could the internet speed with my Holafly eSIM be reduced?

In a rare scenario, yes. Operators enforce an international measure called Fair Usage Policy to ensure fair internet usage and allow all users to enjoy optimal connection. This measure might be applied for a period of no more than one (1) day. It’s beyond Holafly’s control, but don’t worry! If this measure affects you, the restriction will be lifted the next day, and you’ll have your original plan speed back.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that can be installed directly into your smartphone or other mobile devices. It is an alternative to the physical, removable SIM card you’re used to.

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

Yes, you can do so by logging into your customer panel on the Holafly Center. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you’ve made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

Can I share data with other devices?

Certainly! With the Hong Kong eSIM, you have the capability to share up to 500MB of data per day across devices by creating a WiFi connection using your smartphone. Refer to your device instructions for guidance on setting up a WiFi connection via a mobile hotspot.

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

After your purchase, we will send a QR code and manual instructions to your email. Either print the QR code or open it on your computer. On your cell phone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code. Your phone will allow you to assign a specific name to this data plan. You will now be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cell phone settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Consult your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

When should I set up my eSIM?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan turning on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code to take it and manual instructions with you on vacation, just in case. Remember that you need internet access to install the eSIM.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIMs and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

If needed or when changing phones during your trip, you can transfer your eSIM. However, note that you can only transfer the eSIM to two devices—the original one and a new one. Once you’ve installed it on a different device than the original, you won’t be able to reinstall it on the original device and you must deliver the eSIM from the original device to install it in the second device.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSim at the same time. Choose the Sim card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. Please remember that if you leave your Sim card activated, your network provider may apply data roaming charges to receive or make phone calls as well as SMS.

How do I get a refund?

At Holafly we are aware that our users may have unforeseen events after making the purchase. Therefore, you can request a refund in the following circumstances: – You bought the eSIM without checking the compatibility with your cellphone. – You canceled your trip or you no longer need the eSIM. – Our eSIMs generally work fine, but if you experience connection issues, we can provide you with a full or partial refund. Once the refund is approved, you will receive the money on to the same account with which you made the payment. This process can take between 5 to 10 business days. For more details, terms and conditions, we invite you to read our Refund Policy .

To which mobile network will I connect at my destination?

Your eSIM will connect to all the local phone networks that Holafly partners up with. You can review them in the Technical Specs tab.

Is Holafly my best option?

It is! Of course if you ask us which eSIM card is the best, we will naturally answer it’s ours! Why? Because of our unlimited data, the flexibility to select a custom number of days, and many more special features.

If you still wonder?

Can you get an esim in hong kong.

Absolutely, you can obtain an eSIM from anywhere and at any time, provided you have a compatible and unlocked device. To check the list of supported device models, please visit our website, which is accessible here . To determine the locked or unlocked status of your device, please follow the brand-specific instructions for your phone:

For Apple Devices

01. Access [Settings] – [General] – [About] and scroll down 02. If you see “Network Provider Lock – No SIM restrictions” and “Digital SIM – IMEI (number will appear),” your phone is eligible for eSIM use. 03. If “SIM restrictions” are displayed, your phone does not support eSIM.

For Samsung & Google Devices

01. Access [Settings] – [Connections] – [Mobile networks] 02. Choose [Networks operators] 03. If you see multiple available networks, your phone is likely unlocked and eSIM-compatible. 04. If only one result is visible or the option to search for networks is unavailable, your phone may be carrier-locked. In such a case, you’ll need to contact your domestic carrier to unlock your phone before using an eSIM.

Which is the best eSIM for Hong Kong tourist?

You can conveniently acquire an affordable eSIM tailored to your trip from eSIM Hong Kong. When you’re in the process of selecting the most suitable eSIM package for your upcoming trip to Hong Kong, it’s vital to consider several factors, including your data requirements, coverage area, and the duration of your stay.

Here are a few options for your consideration:

| eSIM Hong Kong Unlimited Plans: These plans offer unlimited data, but with reduced speeds (384 kbps) after you’ve used up your high-speed 4G LTE data. They come with different validities, ranging from 3 to 10 days.

| eSIM Hong Kong Fixed Plans: This plan ensures a consistent 4G LTE connection and provides a 6GB data allowance for a 10-day duration.

| eSIM Hong Kong-Macau-China-Taiwan Unlimited: Designed for travelers visiting Hong Kong, Macau, China, and Taiwan, this plan offers coverage in all four countries.

Before making your decision, we highly recommend thoroughly reviewing the details and terms of each eSIM plan. If you need personalized assistance in choosing the perfect plan, please don’t hesitate to contact the eSIM World team at [email protected]

Can I use an alternative payment method besides PayPal?

Currently, we only accept payments through PayPal. If you don’t have a PayPal account, we highly recommend creating one. It’s a simple process that can streamline your payment transactions.

Does the eSIM plan include a local phone number?

Unfortunately, eSIM Hong Kong offers data-only plans, which means local phone numbers are not part of these packages. Consequently, these eSIM plans do not support the ability to make voice calls or send SMS. If you require voice calls and SMS capabilities, we suggest using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services like Skype or other messaging applications that rely on data connectivity to enable calls and messaging.

How can I contact the eSIM World Team?

If you need assistance or have any questions, reaching us is straightforward. You can contact us at [email protected] . Our dedicated customer support team is available 24/7 and is ready to assist with any inquiries or concerns regarding your eSIM plan or its usage. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us; we’re here to assist you.

How can I monitor my data usage?

To keep track of your data usage, you can access the settings on your device. For precise details on data consumption, please contact us at [email protected] .

The process may vary depending on your device’s manufacturer:

Apple Devices

01. Open [Settings] 02. Select [Cellular/Mobile Data] 03. You can check your data usage under “Current Period Roaming.” 04. Alternatively, detailed instructions are available on the Apple website here . You can also dial 1019# to check your data usage via a call.

Samsung Devices

01. Access [Settings] – [Connections] 02. Select [Data usage] 03. Your mobile data consumption will be displayed. 04. You can also dial 1019# and make a call to check your data usage.

Google Devices

01. Open[Settings] – [Network & Internet] – [Internet] 02. Tap [Settings] next to your operator 03. At the top, you’ll see the total data you have used.

What should I do if I encounter the message "No network" after activation?

If you encounter a “No network” message after successfully activating your eSIM, please follow these troubleshooting steps:

| Enable Data Roaming: Make sure [Data Roaming] is turned on for the eSIM plan. Typically found in your device’s network or cellular settings, this setting is crucial for network connection.

| Restart Your Device: Try restarting your phone to refresh network settings and establish a connection with the eSIM network.

| Try manual setting for APN/Network: If your eSIM plan requires manual APN (Access Point Name) settings, you’ll receive instructions after payment. Follow these instructions carefully to enter the correct APN information in your device manually.

If issues persist despite these steps, don’t hesitate to contact our support team at [email protected] for further assistance.

Do I have to turn off my original SIM?

It is highly recommended to deactivate your original SIM to prevent incurring data roaming charges from your domestic carrier while using the eSIM. Deactivating your original SIM ensures that your device exclusively relies on the eSIM for data connectivity during your travels. However, if you wish to continue receiving calls and SMS on your home number while using the eSIM, you can opt to keep your original SIM active. In this scenario, we recommend disabling the “Automatic Cellular Data Switching” feature on your device to prevent unintended data usage, ensuring that data traffic is directed through the eSIM plan rather than the original SIM.

Should I turn on data roaming for eSIM?

Yes, it is essential to enable data roaming for your secondary line, which is your added eSIM plan. To activate data roaming, please follow these steps:

01. Access [Settings] – [Cellular] 02. Select the [Secondary]  (the eSIM plan you’ve added) 03. Make sure that [Data Roaming] is switched to the ON position.

travel sim hong kong

To prevent unexpected charges, it’s important to  disable the automatic switching of lines. Here’s how to do it on Apple Devices:

01. Access [Settings] – [Cellular] 02. Tap [Cellular Data] 03. Ensure that [Allow Cellular Data Switching] is turned OFF

We also advise getting in touch with your domestic carrier to inquire about “Blocked charged international roaming” services. This ensures you have the most appropriate data options in place when using the eSIM plan.

Can I reinstall the eSIM?

For most eSIM plans, you can delete and reinstall them as needed. However, please note that once you activate the eSIM USA-Asia-Australia plan on your device, it cannot be reinstalled. If you encounter any issues or have concerns, please refrain from deleting the eSIM plan on your own. Instead, we recommend reaching out to us at [email protected] for assistance and support.

How can I confirm my eSIM activation?

To ensure your eSIM activation, keep an eye out for these two key indicators:

| eSIM Profiles Navigate to your device’s eSIM settings, where you’ll find a list of available profiles or plans. Once your eSIM is successfully activated, you’ll spot an active profile without a listed phone number among the options.

| Signal and Connectivity After your eSIM is activated and linked to a cellular network, you should observe signal bars or connectivity icons in your device’s status bar. Additionally, you might see the carrier name associated with the eSIM, confirming both its activation and network connection.

Is it possible to receive a refund after making a purchase?

Regrettably, we do not offer refunds for eSIMs that have been activated and used for data. Once activation and data usage have taken place, it aligns with our policy, which does not permit refunds in such cases. We strongly advise customers to thoroughly review their plan details before proceeding to avoid any potential inconvenience.

Can I delete and reinstall the eSIM?

You can reinstall most eSIM plans, except for eSIM Hong Kong Fixed Plan. Once eSIM Hong Kong Fixed Plan is activated on your device, it cannot be reinstalled. If you encounter any issues, please refrain from deleting your eSIM plan. Instead, reach out to us via for assistance.

If you no longer require an eSIM, you can remove it by following these steps:

01. Access [Settings] – [Cellular/Mobile Data] – 02. Tap on the eSIM plan you would like to remove from the list 03. Tap [Remove Cellular Plan] (The name of the button can be something similar depending on the device)

For Samsung

01. Access [Settings] – [Connections] – [SIM card manager] 02. Select a plan on eSIM that you want to remove 03. Toggle the switch to disable the eSIM 04. Tap [Remove]

01. Access [Settings] 02. Tap [Network & internet] – [Mobile network] 03. Select the eSIM you want to delete 04. Tap [Delete SIM]

When you go to take the bullet train from West Kowloon Station (in almost the downtown of the Kowloon Peninsula, Hong Kong territory), you proceed with the Exit Hong Kong immigration procedure as you enter the restricted area to take the train ride. After that, you proceed with the Enter China immigration procedure inside the same train station, before you walk to the platform to board the train. If there is any issue with your China visa, you will be denied entry (into China) and directed to return back to the West Kowloon Station lobby and travel when you have sorted out your visa issue (most likely another day).

The difficulty is that you buy a ticket for a particular train but can't be sure how long the immigration procedures will take. Sometimes there'll be lines sometimes not.

So you end up arriving earlier than you probably need to be just to provide a safety cushion.

(Supposedly this problem will be eliminated at some point with a "take the next train" policy.)
