5 tips for traveling with contact lenses.

A toddler pushing a cart of luggage.

The travel season is upon us again! Are you and your contact lenses ready?

Whether you’re gearing up for summer in the Northern Hemisphere, or sneaking in one last trip before cooler weather down below, make sure you have all of the eye care essentials you’ll need.

To help your travels stay smooth, here’s a helpful checklist:

# 1 The solution for contact lens solution  - Here’s a likely scenario: You remember to take one bottle of solution…only to leave it at a motel room/restaurant restroom/friend or family house. It happens to the best of us.

To avoid any last-minute, late-night drives searching for a place to buy more, take two bottles with you on your travels. You can also purchase solution for contacts in smaller travel-friendly sizes.

# 2 Consider purchasing a travel kit for contact lenses - Sure, you can toss your contact lens case and solution into your travel bags, but having one of these kits can be pretty handy, too. They’re small enough to carry in your purse or coat pocket and a decent one will have everything you need in a pinch—including a mirror.

That last point can be a lifesaver if you find yourself needing to put on your contacts or take them out while you’re away from your motel room. Be sure to shop around because prices can vary.

# 3 Traveling abroad? Travel smart with your contact lens information - If you’re traveling to another country where you don’t speak the native tongue, plan ahead by having your contact lens prescription information handy, along with some translated phrases at the ready.

Hopefully you won’t need this, but if you need to tell a local optometrist that you’ve lost your contacts, you want to make sure that’s the message that’s conveyed—not “my carburetor is wearing a top hat!” Having the correct phrase is important, as the word order and idiomatic expressions can vary from region to region.

# 4 Take along your current eye doctor’s contact info - Again, you may not need it, but this is something many of us may not think to jot down. And if you need this information, you’re going to be glad you took the extra 30 seconds to include it.

By having your optometrist’s number or email with you, you’ll be ready to share it with any local eye doctor should the need arise.

# 5 Pack your eyeglasses  - Even if you’re one of those people who wouldn’t dream of leaving your house wearing glasses (we know you’re out there!), it’s a good idea to take your eyeglasses along if you have them.

Being on the road can introduce new allergens to your eyes—from pollen in the air to pet dander in a relative’s home. Having a spare set of glasses can help. If you don’t need them, great. But if you do, you’ll be glad you have them.

Traveling can be stressful enough without any contact lens quandaries popping up. Follow these tips to help reduce any problems and enjoy your trip. (And don’t forget to take lots of pictures!)

Happy travels!

How to successfully travel with contact lens solution.

If you have bad eyesight, as I do, packing can be a bit more complicated than for those with 20/20 vision .

I’ve worn contact lenses since I was 13 years old and have gotten the hang of it. Keeping up with that habit means I also have to pack contact lens solution when I travel- another liquid taking up space in my 3-1-1 toiletries bag.

But the advantages over glasses are plentiful, so I continue to make contact solution a priority on my packing list .

Traveling with contacts and contact lens solution doesn’t have to be a pain as long as you’re prepared.

Quick Notes About Contacts

The types of contacts you have may affect the type and amount of contact lens solution you travel with.

  • Hard Contacts: Hard contacts, also known as rigid gas permeable, were common early on in vision technology, but now are mostly reserved for specific conditions. They stay focused and don’t dry out eyes as much as soft contacts. They do, however, need to be “broken in” to give your eyes time to adjust. These contacts also require more upkeep than soft contacts and need different solution that may not be as easy to find while traveling.
  • Soft Contacts: Soft contacts, on the other hand, are flexible and can get dislodged in your eyes. They’re much more common for all prescriptions and are fairly easily replaced. But because of their materials, they dry out much faster, especially while in dry places like airplanes. This means you are more likely to need eye drops in addition to your solution. They come in formats like dailies, which you change every day, and others that should be replaced every two weeks to a month. Dailies have their advantages, but take up more room in your luggage.

How to Travel with Contact Lens Solution

Traveling with contacts is only slightly inconvenient, but it’s traveling with solution that adds to your already limited TSA liquids bag . As always, we recommend taking only what you need, and also making sure your bottles are as leak-proof as possible.

The Solution? Pack travel sized bottles of contact lens solution.

It’s fairly easy to find TSA-approved bottles of solution at home, but not always overseas, especially in your preferred brand.

If this is the case, you may need to buy a full-size bottle of solution overseas (and pack it in your checked luggage or throw it away at the end of your trip if you’re traveling carry-on only ) or resort to wearing your glasses.

We don’t recommend decanting your contact lens solution from its original bottle due to hygiene reasons.

Don’t rely on your contact lens solution being a “medically necessary liquid” and therefore exempt from the 3-1-1 rule.

While you may be lucky, some contact lens solutions will test positive for certain chemicals that are not allowed through the screening checkpoint. The TSA recommends only traveling with contact lens solution bottles of 3.4 oz or less in your carry-on luggage. I’ve had to throw my small container of contact solution away when traveling in the UK .

Things like this can vary by country and even by the agent you encounter when passing airport checkpoints.

Where to Find Contact Solution When You Travel

The more common solutions, like multi-purpose solution, are easily found in most countries, but will usually be a different brand. I’ve traveled through Australia , Asia , and Europe and never had trouble finding it . At stores like Boots and 7-Eleven, you should be able to find Western brands as well.

If you use a hydrogen peroxide system, however, you may need to bring enough to last for your entire trip. It pays to do your research before you go to make sure it’s available abroad. We suggest reaching out to the manufacturer to see if they know of the product’s distribution in the countries you intend to travel to.

In addition, people with sensitive eyes and allergies to certain solutions should pack enough for their trip unless they have confirmed the solution will be available at the destination. Otherwise, it might be a better option to forego contacts and stick to glasses for the brunt of a trip to cut back on the amount of liquids you actually need to pack .

Travel-Sized Contact Solution

The largest solution size we’ve found that fits a 3-1-1 bag is 2 oz. The next size up is 4 oz, which is larger than the 3.4 oz (100 ml) maximum. Even searching for “travel size contact solution 3 oz” results in a list of products of 2 or 4 ounces.

Carry-On Considerations: If you’re traveling carry-on only for your trip, you may want to pack multiple bottles of the 2 oz size solution into your 3-1-1 bag. This may mean that you have to pick up some other liquids at your destination (like shampoo, for example). Or you can invest in solid toiletries and not have to worry.

Here are some 2 oz options:

  • Biotrue, 2 oz . You can buy singles or a pack of 4 for the same price per unit.
  • Opti-Free Puremoist, 2 oz . This option comes with a free lens case.
  • Renu MultiPlus, 2 oz, pack of 3 .

Contacts Cases

There are many contacts cases on the market, but the most important feature is a tight-fitting, leak-proof lid. Some come with a zippered container, tweezers, and a mirror for ease of taking out like this one on Amazon. I’ve personally found screw-top containers to be more secure than the hinged designs, but all cases differ. Test yours out prior to travel!

The biggest thing to remember when it comes to traveling with contacts is to change the solution and clean the case frequently to avoid infection and irritation. Also make sure to add solution so that they don’t accidentally dry out overnight.

Side note: Contact lens cases are great for people who don’t wear contacts, too! They can transport smaller amounts of cream makeup and lotions/potions to help you save space.

Additional Tips for Traveling with Contacts and Solution

  • Always wash your hands with clean water before taking out or putting in your contacts. This can be a problem in developing countries, so you might want to travel with hand sanitizer or wet wipes . If you use hand sanitizer first, make sure your hands dry before touching contacts/eyes. Many recommend pouring a bit of contact solution over their fingers for extra cleansing.
  • Change your contacts when your doctor recommends. I write the date that I should change contacts in marker on the blister pack as a reminder.
  • Bring a backup pair of contacts and glasses. In case your contacts rip or you lose them, you’ll have both another pair and your glasses as a last resort.
  • Pack your doctor’s prescription just in case. Most countries should let you refill your prescription overseas so it never hurts to have it. Also throw in your solution of choice so that you don’t have to use a random brand and so you can ask the pharmacist by showing them the bottle.
  • Put your contacts and glasses in your carry-on , not your checked bag. You’d hate for your bags to get lost with your contacts inside! It’s also good to keep your contacts and solution with you to keep your flight comfortable .
  • If your eyesight allows, a cheap pair of readers from the drugstore can be an easy alternative to your nice glasses for travel. It’s not so devastating if you break them (or lose them). Prescription sunglasses and goggles might be right for active travelers as well.

Tips for Traveling with Contacts On a Flight

  • Consider using a lens re-wetting solution during the flight. This solution is thicker than a cleaning solution and may help your contacts feel more comfortable in dry airplane air.
  • Wear glasses for long flights, especially if you’ll be sleeping. This will help prevent tears to the cornea and eye infections. You can put in your contacts once you land.
  • Drink plenty of water so that your eyes stay hydrated.
  • Wash your hands before touching your contacts, but don’t handle them in the airplane bathroom. It’s covered in germs. If you drop a contact in the airplane bathroom, it’s safer to throw it out and use a new one.

Eye infections are very serious. Never decant lens solution from one container into another. It will no longer be sterile and is a risk of infection. Also, use clean fresh solution every single day. If you are traveling somewhere where you wouldn’t drink the water, then be sure to dry your hands after washing and before inserting your lenses. Take extra pairs of lenses – they are not that expensive. Also, snap a photo of your prescription on your phone is n case you need it. Sleep in your lenses only rarely, and only if your eye doctor says it’s OK for you.

If it’s not long term travel, dailies are worth every penny. I’ve had less discomfort, infection and itching since I switched and I no longer need to lug around solution with me (or before that, in earlier years, a heating unit). A month of dailies takes up very little room and is extremely light.

I carry a small eye-drop bottle with solution in it in my purse while out for the day. If a little dirt gets in your eye or your eyes start feeling dry, you can use this to save the day. It also makes a nice backup amount of solution. If it is a long or potentially rough day outdoors I also often bring a lens case and my glasses with me, just in case! I’d love to try the daily disposables for my next trip as it seems infinitely easier. As a tip for those coming to India where I live, eye solution is much more widely available now, but still not available in every medical shop. Worthwhile to get what you need in larger cities and towns before heading out. If you are struggling to find it in the local medical shop, try the chain beauty store Health and Glow (tell them to look as many employees don’t seem to know they carry it) or look for a place that sells eyeglasses as they most likely sell contacts and solution. Eye glasses can be a great bargain in India if you are looking for a backup pair!

As others have mentioned, decanting eye solutions from one bottle to another is EXTREMELY dangerous and can lead to an eye infection that can blind you. Carry around unidose eye lubricant vials that you can open if your eye is irritated and you are on the roads.

Love this post! I wear hard contact lenses and user Clear Care (hydrogen peroxide) cleaner. I got rid of all of my toiletries to make room for 8-100ml sized bottles.

I left home with 4-100ml bottles and ran out in about 3 months. At the time, I was in Vietnam and went to about 10+ eye care stores and pharmacies – none of them carried Clear Care or AOSept (the brand in Asia). Long story short, here is the list of countries/places in Asia that carry AOSept or ClearCare that I’ve seen so far:

ClearCare: – Japan

AOSept: – Kuala Lumpur – Singapore – Hong Kong (I stocked up in HK on a 24-hour layover) – Taiwan

Hopefully this helps someone else looking for ClearCare while traveling!

I just learned that a nighttime bonfire in the desert can mean a harsh wake up call in the morning. When I took them out at night no problem but even with clean hands in the morning it was a rough instillation!! I realized that there was probably schmootz on them from ash and sand and I never gave them a good wash before I put them back in my eyes! 😫

October 9, 2016 at 7:39 pm

That sounds painful!

I’ve never had an problem with solution passing as medically necessary. I use a 3 oz bottle and keep it in a separate ziplock bag. I’ve only tried in the US though.

Thanks for posting this! I recently started wearing contacts and have been stressing about packing solutions for my 3 week backpacking trip next year.

I used to be able to travel with my hydrogen peroxide contact cleaning solution with no problems. Recently had it confiscated at my home airport (failed the strip test) but replacement sailed through return airport (passed the strip test). I called my regional TSA headquarters and spoke with senior person to ask what the official position is – “I don’t know.” Basically, cross your fingers and hope for the best.

January 9, 2017 at 7:12 pm

Ugh how annoying! I think that’s it for everything- cross your fingers!

I use extended wear astigmatism contacts and I pack my pairs in their sterile containers, I put in one pair, leave them in for the ~month I’m supposed to, take them out and never put them back in my eyes again and replace them with a new pair. So my best solution is no solution 😉 😉 (sorry, pardon the pun). I recommend extended wear contacts to anyone with an eye prescription, it’s like not needing glasses/contacts.

Hydrogen peroxide is not always allowed through security, and it can sometimes cause your bag to test positive. I wear rigid gas permeables, and have found that Sereine extra strength cleaner works well enough for during a vacation. However, it is very hard to find. This site has the best options: https://dryeyeshop.com/collections/lens-cleaning-disinfection . I also look for hydrogen peroxide in a pharmacy as soon as I land.

A pocket accessory for many occasions; carrying a compact mirror can be just what you need to finish up your makeup, sort out your contact lenses, or check your cosplay wig. Carrying around a mini compact mirror takes very little space in your bag and doesn’t add extra weight but it can be very useful to have whether you are carrying it around in your bag for everyday use, going on an outing to a Comic Con event or working as a scare actor.

The main reason we have added compact mirrors to our collection is that they are so helpful for inserting your contact lenses. Some regular contact lens wearers are able to insert contact lenses without looking in a mirror but even those with plenty of experience may still prefer to use a mirror to guide them. If you are new to wearing contact lenses, then practicing in front of a mirror is a great way to improve your skills. Look in the mirror as you place the contact lens on your eye to check that it is properly on the surface of your eye and then blink. Once your contact lens is in place, you will be able to check it in your mirror.

When the time comes to remove your contact lenses, you will be able to see exactly where your colored contacts are and be able to use your fingers or lens tweezers to gently pinch the lens and remove it from your eye.

You may also need to adjust your makeup if your eyes have watered during the insertion or removal of your contact lenses.

During the day, if you have been advised to use rewetting drops, you can use your mirror to make sure the drops are going into your eye rather than making a mess of your makeup and clothes.

Carrying the mirror with you is perfect for those emergencies where you may need to remove or insert contact lenses unexpectedly. You can also inspect your eye to make sure it is staying healthy and hydrated and check for any redness if you are experiencing discomfort. If you do experience lens discomfort, it is important to remove your contact lenses and inspect them. You may be able to rinse them in contact lens solution and reinsert them to check if it resolves the problem. This process is made much easier if you have a mirror to look in.

A pocket mirror is a perfect companion to your colored contact lenses, especially if you are on the go. We generally don’t recommend wearing colored contact lenses while driving because they restrict peripheral vision but you definitely can’t wear blind effect and mesh lenses while driving or carrying out everyday tasks. You will want to wait until just before your photoshoot or event to insert your contact lenses which means you may need a travel mirror on hand.

Carrying a folding travel mirror means that you don’t need to worry about scratching the mirror surface while it is in your bag. These mirrors are bifolding so you can close them in half to store them away, also saving space. There is a mirror on each part of the fold out sections so you will be able to get a good view of your makeup, eyes, or hair. This also means that you can easily stand your mirror up. Either open the folding mirror to a slight angle and place it on its side or open it to a 90 degree angle and place one half on a flat surface.

While you can get a plain compact mirror for handbag , our colorful designs add some fun and style to your makeup kit. These gorgeous designs feature cute mandala prints, feathered boho styles, hearts, and quirky prints so you can choose a design that matches your aesthetic. This fun artwork also makes these compact mirrors perfect for giving as gifts. Whether you are looking for stocking stuffers, Secret Santa gifts or party favors, our travel mirrors may be the perfect little extra gift.

We like to make sure we can offer a cheap compact mirror without compromising on style and quality. These sturdy mirrors are made from robust materials to stand up to life in your bag or purse.

Carrying a compact mirror for purse allows you to check your appearance while on the go. If you are a fan of cosplay, you can check in and refresh your makeup or wig throughout the day. Comic Cons can be tiring, hot, and long and while you will be having the best time, you will want to make sure your outfit reflects this. A travel mirror is definitely essential for your cosplay kit to take with you everywhere and ensure you are looking your best for every photo opportunity.

If you are a scare actor or work as a performer such as at Princess and Superhero parties, it is important for your customers and guests that you keep your costume pristine to keep up the magical illusion. A small and subtle travel folding mirror will help you to have a quick check of your costume and makeup before the next round of guests enter the haunted house or visit their dream pop culture character.

An everyday pocket mirror is an essential for some and you will find that plenty of people carry around mirrors. If you love to create a striking everyday aesthetic or simply want to check that your mascara hasn’t smudged, then a pocket mirror can ensure your makeup and face stay looking fresh all day. The Best Travel Makeup Mirror – What To Look For In 2024

I may earn a commission from links in this post. Thank you!

There’s no reason not to look your best when travelling. A quality travel makeup mirror is one of the first things I pack. Here’s my guide to the best travel mirrors available in 2022.

Factors you should consider

To cut through the overwhelming number of products available, ask yourself a few simple questions:

  • Do I need magnification?
  • Do I need built-in lighting?
  • Where will I place the balance between larger reflection size (good), and greater weight (bad)?

1. Style of travelling

One of the main factors which will influence your decision is the type of travelling you do, and the style of accomodation. The college student, professional model, and businesswoman will all have different needs in their travel makeup mirrors.

a) Camping and backpacking

The main consideration here is size. As ever, there is a compromise to work through. Obviously the smaller and lighter the better, but that may come at the expense of features like decent lighting, large image size, and quality construction.

If you do choose a lighted travel mirror (and I think you should), then battery life and recharging methods are important.

Finally, the mirror should be shatterproof; cutting yourself on a broken mirror is a poor way to start a trip.

b) Upmarket hotels and airBnB

One approach is to assume the hotel will have quality mirrors, well positioned and brightly illuminated (and therefore you only need pack a great compact mirror (read my reviews) for day use). In my experience, this is a dangerous assumption! Some of the swankiest hotels I’ve stayed in did indeed have gorgeous mood lighting … which was too dim to read by, let alone do a sophisticated makeup application.

2. Your vision

The worse your vision, the more important it is that your travel mirror has:

3. Your style of makeup

Perhaps this is an obvious point, but I’m going to say it anyway; the more complex your beauty regime, the better mirror you need. If you regularly spend 3 hours getting ready, blending foundation like a pro, then you essentially need a portable studio (and I’ve found one for you!). If you’re more a ponytail and swipe of lipstick kind of girl, then you can save yourself some space and money by buying a simpler mirror.

4. Other crucial considerations

Portability – look for the smallest and lightest mirror that will meet your needs ( without compromising these). A large compact mirror at around 4 inch diameter is about the smallest that is functional. Regarding weight, you start to notice it in your luggage once it exceeds about a pound.

This is a mirror for travelling right? – it should be designed for a rough life, ideally unbreakable. There are 2 aspects to ruggedness : build quality and protection of the reflective surface. This can be achieved by either a folding case (clamshell), or a specifically designed bag or pouch.

High quality – a portable makeup mirror will be smaller than you’re used to, so aim for the best quality reflection.

Power source and recharge options – you don’t want to be carrying a large brick adapter, or dedicated recharge cables that don’t fit your other devices. Stick to a USB connector. Battery life is also important – it’s always a challenge keeping everything recharged when you’re hardcore travelling. Is it approved for airplane carry-on?

Cost is always a factor, but especially so in a travel mirror, which is more likely to get broken or stolen. I think there are 2 ways to approach this. Minimalists might go for a cheap option, accept the poor quality, and not care if it doesn’t survive the trip. Maximisers will go for an expensive mirror specially designed for travel.

Compact-style Lighted Travel Mirror (BEST VALUE)

Fancii led lighted travel makeup mirror, 1x/10x magnification.

Lumi from Fancii is a serious rival for the far more expensive simplehuman mirror reviewed below. In fact, if portability and storage is your main concern, this lighted travel makeup mirror is the clear winner. Add in the fantastic price from a leading brand, and I’ve chosen it as the all-round best travel mirror.

It’s in the style of a compact mirror, but not one your Grannie would recognise. For a start, it has a modern LED ring light (giving off a cool natural sunlight color). The bulbs are long-lasting, expected to last many thousands of hours, so they won’t diminish or need changing.

The larger mirror (5″) is 10x magnification, great for eyeliner, blackheads and details. The other side of the clamshell holds a smaller (4″) flat 1x mirror, surrounded by the LEDs. Fancii had to make a design choice here about which side to place the light. I think they made the right decision in having the magnified mirror larger , rather than illuminated but smaller. However, whichever mirror you’re looking into it is easy to position the light so it aims at your face.

My only slight disappointment with this travel mirror is that it is not rechargeable. The 4 batteries are small and long-lasting. They are included, but you may want to buy some extra before travelling (see CR2032 3V batteries on Amazon ).

At only 6.5oz and less than an inch thick this is a great travel makeup mirror which should appeal to everyone. They make perfect gifts.

If you want something very similar but even lighter and rechargeable, take a look at the Mila magnifying compact, also by Fancii .

This will go a month between charges, and weighs less than 4.5oz!

The only tradeoff is slightly smaller mirrors.

Luxury Lighted Magnified Travel Mirror (BEST QUALITY)

This is home from home, no compromises, and quite possibly the best travel makeup mirror you’ve ever used.

simplehuman 5″ Round Mini Travel Sensor Makeup Mirror

Specific travel benefits.

Crucially, it’s designed from the ground up for travel. The design and engineering are impressive.

  • Folds flat (approx 6″x11″x1″)
  • Includes padded protective case
  • Can be packed in carry-on bag (FAA approved)
  • Amazing charge-holding (literally weeks!)
  • Super-bright LED lights (550 lux)
  • Distortion free reflection (even at the edge)
  • Tough and seriously well designed

Other Factors

The reflective surface is round at 5″ in diameter. It is a 10x magnifying mirror, one-sided only – no plain mirror on the reverse. This magnification is ideal for detailed work on eyebrows, eyelids and lashes, tweezing, putting in contact lenses, and also if your vision needs a little boost. The reflection is absolutely large enough to be functional, but is probably a bit smaller than you are used to at home. After you’ve finished using it for precise makeup application, it would help to check your overall appearance and hair in a larger plain mirror (the hotel bathroom mirror would be fine for this).

The height adjustment has 2 positions, with a very clever hinge mechanism which is solid and stable (but which explains why the mirror cannot be double sided). It swivels to any angle you need, on a stable base.

At 1.2 lbs this is certainly not the lightest travel mirror available (but it’s also far from the heaviest). I actually think simplehuman have done an amazing job in keeping the weight so low. For comparison, it is less than half the weight of my all-time favourite lighted makeup mirror ( simplehuman 8″ sensor mirror – my review ).

The on/off sensor is well calibrated and reliable. The mirror stays lit even if you briefly move aside, so no annoying flicking on and off. The LED bulbs will live longer than you and never need changing. The light of course is full spectrum without color casts, equivalent to natural daylight.

Best for: A woman who wants to look her best and needs magnification. Not ideal for: Camping or light-weight travel.

Budget Lighted Magnifying Travel Mirror

Floxite circle lite vanity and travel 10x magnifying mirror.

If you’re looking for lights and a 10x mirror, but want to spend less, then this cosmetic mirror by Floxite is a great option. In fact, for travelling it beats the simplehuman in a few respects:

The glass quality and reflection sharpness are also as good. It folds flat to less than 1″, and the compact-style case gives good protection. (Don’t be fooled though; this is a fairly large mirror, definitely not a handheld compact.)

There are however a few compromises. First, the outer case flips over to double as a stand. It is therefore not possible to adjust the height (other than resting it on something else such as a book), and the range of angles is limited.

The lighting is “good enough” – some people may find it not quite bright enough. It is powered by 3 AAA batteries (supplied). I have a strong preference for rechargeable mirrors – it can be a pain looking for replacement batteries on holiday.

Honestly, it doesn’t make my heart sing. This is function ahead of beauty.

If you can live with these compromises, this is a solid choice for your travelling vanity mirror.

Large Lighted Travel Mirror (non-magnified)

Vanity planet pose led travel mirror.

If you don’t need magnification, but still want a lighted mirror, take a look at the Vanity Planet Pose . This is a large (11″x7″ approx reflection) plain 1x magnification travel mirror.

One of its best features is the lighting quality. 36 LEDs around the edge give even circle lighting. The brightness levels are dimmable by holding the nifty touch screen.

It is relatively portable – about the size and weight of an iPad Pro – easy to slip into a holdall. The slim clamshell lid gives good protection for the mirrored surface.

Power is from a USB-rechargeable battery. And here we come to my first criticism – battery life. It’s pretty disappointing. It will run for about 2 hours on a full charge, but doesn’t hold the charge well when turned off. I think you will need to recharge it most times you come to use it. This won’t be a problem if you’re on vacation in hotels and can keep the USB cable plugged in. But for more basic travelling in hostels, where there’s always a fight for power outlets, it might become tedious.

The second disadvantage to consider is the poor adjustability. The cover/stand is really only stable in one position. The large reflection size compensates for this to a degree.

Large Plain Travel Mirror

Ducare portable folding vanity mirror with stand.

This folding mirror is a great option if you need only a simple plain mirror, but one specifically designed for travel, particularly motorhomes. It would be especially suitable for young women with good eyesight, who don’t need magnification and illumination.

It has a 6.5″ x 4.5″ reflective surface with high quality glass. Total dimensions are 8×6, a very slim 0.5″ in thickness, and weighs 10 ounces. It’s big enough to see your entire face.

It has a flip-over soft PU leather cover which is dirt and water resistant. It protects the mirrored surface from scratches and can withstand a reasonable direct blow. It would be vulnerable to bending forces however, so I would take care to pack it flat in a suitcase, or in the laptop compartment of a bag.

The cover folds over to double as a stand. This works very well, and is smoothly adjustable over a 55 degree range. It is shipped in an elegant box and would make a great gift, perhaps for a daughter leaving for college?

Small 10x/1x 2-Sided Mirror

Studiozone 10x magnifying mirror and 1x mirror.

Slightly bigger than traditional compacts, this is a portable option for lightweight travel, while still being big enough to be useful. The image itself is 3.5″ across (4″ diameter and under 1″ thick with the case), and weighs less than 3 ounces.

One side has a 10x magnifying makeup mirror, the other is a plain flat mirror. Made by an American company to high standards, there is no distortion from the glass.

The case opens flat to 180 degrees, with a stiff hinge allowing positioning at any angle. In addition it is sturdy and will survive being bounced around in a purse. The clasp holds it tightly closed, although does require a bit of a knack and pressure to open.

Slimmest Lightest Travel Mirror

Mirrornova compact ultra-slim small portable travel makeup mirror.

Here’s one for the minimalists and ultra-light travellers. Available in 2 sizes – 3.3″ and 4.7″ – the smaller is literally the size of a credit card; less than an ounce in weight, a tenth of an inch thick. A true pocket mirror.

It has a single 1x mirror (made of real glass surprisingly), in an aluminium case. You can use it handheld, or flipping the lid to its locked position and resting on a surface.

Best For Influencers?

I thought hard about whether to include this Riki Skinny . It is promoted heavily by influencers and you’ve probably seen it on TikTok and Instagram. Its USP is the ability to pair via bluetooth to your iphone and record well-lit video and selfies. It has really bright lights with different brightness settings.

It’s a good makeup mirror. But is it a great travel mirror? I don’t think so. With all the accessories it weighs 4lbs! Battery life is poor. Build quality seems variable. And you’ll need to pay extra for a (bulky) carrying case .

But if you’re a wannabe influencer none of these downsides matter. This is your mirror!

Here is the google translated press text:

“Shvabe has released updated Rubinar mirror-lens lenses Moscow, February 01, 2021 Press Release The line is represented by lenses with focal lengths of 300, 500 and 1000 mm, which are suitable for creative and astronomical photography. The developers of Shvabe Holding Company of Rostec State Corporation have updated the design and improved technical characteristics. MC Rubinar 10/1000 Macro, MC Rubinar 8/500 Macro, MC Rubinar 5,6/500 Macro and MC Rubinar 4,5/300 Macro are now on sale. The new versions of these devices got a redesigned lens hood, improved matte inner surfaces, and enlightened optical details – which is especially relevant for digital photography. The metal body is not made from a tube, but milled from a billet. Such a solution ensured a higher manufacturing accuracy and stability of the optical circuit during operation. The Lytkarinsky Optical Glass Plant (LZOS) of Shvabe, which developed the products, notes: at the moment Rubinar is the only serial mirror-lens lens in Russia with such characteristics. “The lenses have become more modern in their new guise and have gained a number of advantages. For example, creative people will enjoy bokeh in the form of rings and macro mode. At the same time, our specialists retained the M42 mount thread for greater unification with all existing mounts through simple and inexpensive adapters. Currently, the first production batch has been manufactured,” noted Alexander Ignatov, LZOS General Director. For astrophotographers, LZOS developers offer an additional service of lens adjustment “MS Rubinar 10/1000 Macro”. This model is suitable for photographing the surface of the Moon, stars and planets of the Solar System.
