Free COVID-19 insurance with Virgin Atlantic flights

A Virgin Atlantic cabin crew member wears a face mask and stands in front of a plane

Virgin Atlantic  customers can book with confidence this year thanks to the introduction of free COVID-19 insurance on all new and existing bookings.

The policy, which applies automatically to all flights booked with Virgin Atlantic, is designed to complement existing travel insurance and provide additional peace of mind for upcoming trips – whether customers have already booked or are planning a getaway.

The Virgin Atlantic COVID-19 Cover means that if customers become ill with COVID-19 while travelling, all the related costs are covered. It doesn’t matter how long their trip is, or if they’re visiting another destination on the same overseas trip.

Customers booked to travel from 24 August 2020 until 31 March 2021 will automatically receive the new COVID-19 Cover.

The cover is provided by Allianz Assistance and covers emergency medical and associated expenses while abroad totalling £500,000 per customer – the highest value of policy offered by an airline to date, with no excess payment required.

The policy also covers expenses incurred up to £3,000 if a customer is denied boarding on either their departure or when returning from their destination – or has to quarantine due to positive or suspected COVID-19 during a trip.

Virgin Atlantic COVID-19 Cover joins the airline’s flexible booking policy to give as much choice as possible to customers as they make their future travel plans. Customers booking with the airline have the option to make two date changes to their flights, with rebooking available up until 30 September 2022.

Virgin Atlantic also recently announced that Flying Club members can now  earn tier points on redemption flights .

Virgin Atlantic Offers Free COVID-19 Insurance to All Passengers

Anyone who flies from now through March 2021 will be automatically covered

travel insurance virgin atlantic

When the COVID-19 first hit the scene and wreaked havoc on the travel industry, travelers were shocked to find out that most insurance plans didn’t cover epidemics , losing them all the money spent on trips that ended up being canceled. Even now, many policies don’t cover COVID-19, meaning if you did hit the road today, then you contracted the coronavirus on your travels, you might be on the hook for all of your medical bills. Understandably, this financial risk has made people nervous about traveling again, even if destinations are relatively safely opened back up for tourism.

In an industry first, however, Virgin Atlantic is automatically giving all passengers flying on the airline between now and March 31, 2021, free COVID-19 insurance through Allianz Assistance. The offer stands not only for passengers who have already booked their flights but also for anyone who makes a new booking for a flight departing between those dates.

The policy offers up to 500,000 pounds (approximately $654,000) for medical treatment outside of your home country, including repatriation to your home country if deemed necessary by medical professionals, up to 3,000 pounds (approximately $4,000) for quarantine accommodations and refreshments outside your home country, up to 1,500 pounds (roughly $2,000) for accommodations and transportation in your home country. In essence, you’d pretty much be off the hook for any COVID-19 expenses you might run into on a trip, including at least some of the cost of a quarantine facility if you test positive once you land.

Now, the insurance policy does have a fair bit of fine print. First of all, the insurance only covers COVID-19, so if you happen to break your foot while surfing, you won’t be covered by Virgin Atlantic’s plan. Second, it only applies to passengers who are ticketed through Virgin Atlantic, not through any of its codeshare partners. For instance, if you book a flight from New York to London through Delta, but Virgin Atlantic operates the flight, you will not be covered. However,  if you book a flight through Virgin Atlantic, but Delta operates it, you will be covered.

“Whether it’s to visit friends and relatives or take a well-deserved break, we believe this complimentary cover will provide some added reassurance for our customers as they start to plan trips further afield,” Juha Jarvinen, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Atlantic said in a statement. “It applies in parallel to existing travel insurance policies which may now exclude COVID-19, and provides comprehensive cover for coronavirus, recognizing the needs of our customers as we restart services.”

While low fares and flexible cancellation policies have been used by airlines to woo passengers back onboard, Virgin Atlantic’s new insurance policy might just be enough to convince some holdouts to book a flight. Before you run off to buy a ticket, check out the full details of the insurance policy here , and be sure to read the fine print carefully.

Who are Virgin Atlantic's airline partners?

How to use virgin atlantic flying club points on partner airlines, virgin atlantic elite members get automatic skyteam status, earn virgin atlantic points with airline partners, virgin atlantic airline partners recapped.

Many American travelers are familiar with Virgin Atlantic because of its well-known founder, Richard Branson. But they may not know how strong the airline's points are when booking international travel.

When redeeming points through Virgin Atlantic partners, you can find tremendous value — and possibly lower prices — than if you booked directly using that airline's miles.

Learn who the Virgin Atlantic transfer partners are, how to use points to book flights and how your elite status can earn you benefits on other airlines.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club partners with the SkyTeam alliance and has relationships directly with other airlines. Members can earn or redeem Virgin points for flights, hotel stays and more.

The airline joined the SkyTeam alliance in March 2023. As a SkyTeam member, you can earn and redeem points with any of the other 18 members of the alliance.

Flying Club Silver and Gold members also receive extra benefits when flying with SkyTeam partners, like priority check-in and boarding and an extra baggage allowance.

These airlines make up the SkyTeam alliance:

Aerolineas Argentinas.

AeroMexico.

Air Europa.

Air France.

China Airlines.

China Eastern.

Czech Airlines.

Delta Air Lines.

Garuda Indonesia.

ITA Airways.

Kenya AIrways.

Korean Air.

MEA (Middle East Airlines).

Vietnam Airlines.

Virgin Atlantic.

Xiamen Air.

The airline also has direct relationships with nine other airlines:

Air New Zealand.

All Nippon Airways (ANA).

Hawaiian Airlines.

Latam Airlines.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS).

Singapore Airlines.

South African Airways.

Virgin Australia.

Flying Club Gold members get lounge access, priority check-in and extra baggage allowances when flying Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Australia.

» Learn more: Best uses of Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points

The process is relatively simple to redeem points for flights on Virgin Atlantic Flying Club partners.

Log in to your Virgin Atlantic loyalty account . Go to VirginAtlantic.com to enter your username and password.

Search for flights . Select departure and arrival cities, round-trip or one-way flights, travel dates and number of passengers. Then select "points" or "points plus money" to use your points to pay for the trip.

Review flight options . In the search results, you'll receive flight options from Virgin Atlantic and any partner airlines that fly that route.

Choose your preferred flights . Select the flights with the price and itinerary you like best.

Pay for your flight . Finalize your flight by paying the taxes and fees with your preferred credit card. The points are then deducted from your Flying Club account.

Another option is the Virgin Atlantic reward seat checker , which searches for award space on direct flights from the United Kingdom. However, its search capabilities are limited to Virgin Atlantic and Delta, so you won't be able to find flights on other partner airlines.

This example shows award availability for August 2023 on Delta flights from Edinburgh to Boston:

As a member of the SkyTeam alliance, Virgin Atlantic elite members receive SkyTeam status benefits as well. Flying Club Silver members receive SkyTeam Elite status, while Gold members receive Elite Plus.

SkyTeam Elite status benefits include the following:

Additional checked bag.

Priority check-in.

Priority boarding.

Priority seating.

Priority airport standby.

Flying Club members with Elite Plus recognition also receive:

Airport lounge access.

Priority baggage handling.

When flying with one of Virgin Atlantic's partners, you can earn Flying Club points instead of miles from that airline.

This minimizes the number of orphan miles and points with random loyalty programs and accelerates your ability to redeem points for free flights.

Credit your flight to your Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account

You can credit your flight with one of the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club partners by adding your Flying Club number to your reservation online, over the phone or when checking in at the airport.

Most airlines allow you to modify your reservation online to choose a partner airline and provide your loyalty number.

Take advantage of bonus points in premium cabins

When booking premium cabins, you may be eligible to earn bonus points on your flights. For example, booking Air France Premiere class long-haul flights will earn you 400% Flying Club points and 200 tier points.

Be aware of varying earning rates from airline partners

Earning power varies by airline, so keep that in mind when choosing which partners to fly with. While you can earn up to 400% points and 200 tier points with Air France, AeroMexico caps out at 200% points and 75 tier points on long-haul flights.

These differences add up if you're flying with partners regularly.

Earn Virgin Atlantic points with hotels, car rentals and shopping

Members earn Flying Club points from flights, but Virgin Atlantic has other options. Start online shopping at Virgin Atlantic Retail Therapy to earn points at participating retailers.

Plus, link your accounts to earn Flying Club points with partner hotels, rental car agencies and other travel partners.

Get points from transfer partners

In addition to partner airlines, Virgin Atlantic is a transfer partner of American Express, Bilt, Capital One, Chase and Citi.

These partners transfer points at a 1:1 ratio with a minimum of 1,000 points at a time. Marriott Bonvoy points also transfer but at a less desirable 3:1 ratio. However, you get a 5,000 bonus for every 60,000 Bonvoy points you transfer. Terms apply.

As soon as we locate your baggage, we'll arrange for delivery to your destination. Most delayed bags travel on our next available flight.

How to make a claim

Our liability on lost baggage is limited, so if you have travel insurance (always recommended) you’re likely to be better off making a claim through them instead. Most insurers will ask for proof you have reported the delay and/or damage with our baggage team. In most cases the 10 alpha-numeric reference we give you is normally enough.

If you don't have travel insurance and you need to make a claim, please look at the options available below. If your experience is one or more of the below scenarios, please complete the most applicable log, and attach all receipts you’re claiming for.

Chris Woodroofe, Managing Director at Manchester Airport: "Here at Manchester Airport, we're proud to serve the North with an ever-growing route network of more than 200 destinations. Adding Las Vegas with Virgin Atlantic to that list is really exciting.

"It also makes Manchester Airport the only English airport outside London to offer direct flights to America's west coast, opening up a host of travel opportunities including the bright lights and nightlife of Las Vegas itself, the spectacular scenery of National Parks like Yosemite and the Grand Canyon as well the Pacific coast, the fascinating cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles and much, much more."

Dom Kennedy, Senior Vice President at Virgin Atlantic Holidays , added: "We’re thrilled to be re-introducing our Manchester to Las Vegas service and its incredible to be here today with all customers as they fly off for a trip of a lifetime."

Las Vegas is considered to be something of a bucket list destination for British holidaymakers who want to explore the city's famous Vegas Strip .

Virgin Atlantic isn't the only airline launching a new route from the UK to Las Vegas, with Norse Atlantic Airways also announcing the launch of a new service.

Earlier this year, the budget airline revealed that it would be launching a new route from London Gatwick to Las Vegas.

The route will be launching from September 12, with one-way fares starting from as little as £163, while return fares will start from just £399 in economy.

Other Norse flights from the UK include:

  • London Gatwick to Barbados
  • London Gatwick to to Los Angeles
  • London Gatwick to to Miami
  • London Gatwick to Orlando
  • London Gatwick to Washington.

Key takeaways

  • Virgin Red allows you to earn points redeemable for flights, hotel stays, cruises, gift cards and unique travel experiences.
  • Virgin Red is not a replacement for Virgin Flying Club.
  • Members can link their Virgin Red and Flying Club accounts together to pool points.
  • New Flying Club members are automatically enrolled in Virgin Red.

Frequent flyers know the value of airline rewards programs . Most, if not all, airline carriers offer a loyalty program where members can earn and redeem rewards for flights, airline upgrades and various redemptions.

For fans of Virgin, there are now two rewards programs you can earn rewards through. Virgin Red is the newest loyalty rewards program from the Virgin Group. The program was launched in the UK in 2021 and in the U.S. later that year. Virgin Atlantic already has a frequent flyer program called Flying Club . Virgin Red is not the replacement for Flying Club. Instead, the two programs pair together for more rewards-earning potential.

In this guide, we’ll dive into the Virgin Red program, how to earn and redeem points and how to link your account with your Flying Club account to pool your points.

What is Virgin Red?

In February 2021, the Virgin Group announced the arrival of Virgin Red in the UK, a new rewards club that earns points redeemable to spend on hundreds of rewards across the Virgin Group and beyond. The loyalty program was later launched in the U.S. in November 2021. The American version is not an exact copy of the UK program, though — it’s structured with American members in mind.

The Virgin Group launched Virgin Red not to replace Flying Club but to complement the popular airline loyalty program. In fact, Virgin Red gives members hundreds of other ways to earn and spend Virgin Points, which aren’t just related to travel. Members can link their Virgin Red and Flying Club accounts to pool points to use with either platform.

How to earn Virgin Points

Virgin Red members can earn Virgin Points, the universal currency used by Virgin brands going forward, in several ways. The number of points you can earn varies depending on the offer.

  • Online shopping : Virgin Red members can earn points shopping through select retail partners.
  • Travel : You can earn points by booking stays at Virgin Hotels, flights with Virgin Atlantic, Delta , Air France/KLM  and travel booked through Booking.com and other Virgin Red travel partners.
  • Unique experiences : Virgin offers distinctive experiences that can earn Virgin Points. For example, you currently can earn 55,000 points by booking a seven-night stay at Necker Island, Sir Richard Branson’s 74-acre private island in the Caribbean.
  • Transfer partners : Both Virgin Red and Flying Club are transfer partners for many popular rewards programs, including Chase Ultimate Rewards , American Express Membership Rewards , Citi ThankYou Rewards and Bilt Rewards. All four programs allow you to transfer points to your Flying Club account at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Credit cards : Virgin Atlantic offers a co-branded airline credit card that earns Virgin Points — the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® *. The card earns 3X points per dollar on Virgin Atlantic purchases and 1.5 points per dollar on all other purchases for a $90 annual fee.

How to redeem Virgin Red rewards

Virgin Red offers various ways to redeem points, including some noteworthy options you won’t find anywhere else. Point values vary depending on the redemption. Virgin Points don’t expire either, so you can bank your points as long as you want if you have larger redemptions in mind.

You can redeem Virgin Points for award flights through Virgin Atlantic. Redemptions start at 18,000 for Economy Classic reward seats and go up based on when and where you travel — you only pay for any taxes and fees imposed. There are also options to use points and money toward flights or redeem your points for seat or cabin upgrades on eligible flights. Virgin Atlantic is part of the SkyTeam Airline Alliance, so you can redeem points for flights on SkyTeam partner airlines. The full list of SkyTeam airlines includes:

SkyTeam airlines

  • Aerolineas Argentinas
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern
  • Czech Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • ITA Airways
  • Kenya Airways
  • Middle East Airlines
  • Saudia (Saudi Arabian Airlines)
  • Vietnam Airlines
  • Virgin Airlines
  • Xiamen Airlines

SkyTeam airlines aren’t the only airline partners of Virgin Atlantic. You can earn and redeem Virgin Points for flights with the following airline partners:

Additional airline partners

  • Air New Zealand
  • All Nippon Airways (ANA)
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • LATAM Airlines
  • SAS Scandinavian Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines
  • South African Airways
  • Virgin Australia

There are plenty of redemption options outside of flights available through both Virgin rewards programs. Virgin Red and Flying Club members can also redeem their points for:

Other redemption options

  • Virgin Atlantic Holidays
  • Virgin hotel stays
  • Stays at Virgin partner hotels (Marriott Bonvoy, IHG One Rewards, Hilton Honors and Kaligo)
  • Transfer points to another Flying Club member
  • Donate points to charity and causes
  • Entertainment and experiences
  • Virtual culinary masterclasses
  • Live events

Not only can you earn Virgin Points for a stay on Sir Richard Branson’s private island, as mentioned earlier, but you can also redeem points for an exclusive private island getaway at Necker Island. As you might expect, you’ll need to save a significant points balance and pay cash to cover this one-of-a-kind redemption. A minimum four-night stay at Necker Island costs 540,000 points plus $5,400, which includes one free night. Each additional night runs 180,000 points plus $1,800. This redemption is only available during select Celebration weeks throughout the year. A lot of fine print is included with a redemption of this nature. Read through the offer guidelines and restrictions carefully before booking a stay at this island retreat.

Getting started with Virgin Red

Anyone over the age 18 can sign up for Virgin Red for free online or through the app. You don’t need to be an existing Virgin customer to set up an account. New Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members are automatically enrolled in Virgin Red.

One of the most unique features of Virgin Red is that it pairs with the existing Virgin Atlantic frequent flyer program, Flying Club. To link your account, navigate to the “Link accounts” section of your Virgin Red account and enter your Flying Club account number. Once linked, members can view and redeem Virgin points through either program platform.

Frequently asked questions

Do i need to spend with virgin to use virgin red, how do i link my virgin atlantic flying club account, the bottom line.

Virgin Red is a valuable rewards program that builds on the brand’s existing Flying Club program. The ability to earn points through two programs and pool your points together is unique, although many airline and credit card loyalty programs allow you to earn points beyond booking travel through their brands.

Still, signing up is a no-brainer if you fly on Virgin Atlantic or regularly shop online with any of its retail or travel partners. The program is free, and rewards never expire. Virgin Red is also an excellent option for travelers who want to redeem rewards for one-of-a-kind travel experiences.

How to Get a Round-Trip Flight to Anywhere With the New Chase Sapphire Preferred Bonus

Vault’s viewpoint on the new chase sapphire preferred bonus.

  • The Chase Sapphire Preferred comes with an increased welcome bonus of 75,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points earned after spending $4,000 within the first three months.
  • Chase partners with multiple airlines, allowing you to convert your points into airline miles.
  • By transferring the card’s current bonus to airline loyalty programs, you can visit nearly anywhere in the world.

The Best Way to Redeem Chase Points Is for Travel

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is a travel credit card . You don’t have to spend the rewards you earn from the card on travel, but it’ll give you the biggest bang for your points.

The current 75,000-point bonus is worth $750 in easy cash. You can take the money and walk away, or you can use your points to cross something legendary off your bucket list—something you never thought you’d be able to do—by transferring them to airlines and booking award flights.

To transfer Chase points , you’ll need to first enroll in whichever loyalty program you’d like to use. That may sound inconvenient, but it takes all of two minutes—and it’s free.

You Can Use the Current Chase Sapphire Preferred Bonus to Fly Nearly Anywhere

After you meet the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s minimum spending requirement on the welcome offer, you’ll have at least 79,000 points by our check—75,000 points, plus at least 4,000 points from meeting the spending requirement. Let’s see where you can go with a stockpile of points like that.

Just a couple of caveats before we dive in:

  • Award flights come with taxes and fees. Sometimes they’re just a few dollars, and sometimes they’re over $100 each way. We’ll minimize the out-of-pocket cost in the examples below, but just realize that even award flights aren’t completely free.
  • Award prices can vary drastically from day to day. To get the lowest prices, you’ll need to have a bit of flexibility with your vacation dates.

With that out of the way, here are some pointers for traveling (almost) anywhere with the increased Chase Sapphire Preferred bonus.

North America

Transfer to Southwest. Southwest serves the vast majority of the U.S. (including Hawaii). It also flies to several destinations around Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

Southwest’s points price is directly tied to its cash price. In general, you’ll get a value of around 1.4 cents per point. For example, a $100 flight will typically cost around 7,200 points. With the 79,000 or more points you may have after meeting the minimum spend and earning the Chase Sapphire bonus, you shouldn’t have trouble receiving at least $1,106 in Southwest flights.

Here’s a sample round-trip itinerary between Indianapolis (IND) and Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR), on Southwest. You’ll pay just 41,002 points and $84.60 for the trip.

South America

Transfer to British Airways. British Airways prices its awards based on the distance of each leg of your trip. In general, the closer you are to your destination, and the fewer connections you have, the lower your price will be.

Here’s an example: The itinerary below is from Columbus (CMH) to Lima, Peru (LIM), with a connection in Miami. You’ll pay 27,000 Avios points and $20.60 one-way.

Meanwhile, you can travel nonstop from Dallas (DFW) all the way to Santiago, Chile (SCL), for just 25,750 Avios points and $5.60 one-way. All to say, you can book a round-trip flight to nearly anywhere in South America with plenty of points to spare.

Transfer to Air Canada Aeroplan or Iberia. Europe is an easy destination to reach with Chase Ultimate Rewards. Just about every transfer partner can chauffeur you across the Atlantic for a reasonable amount of points.

Air Canada Aeroplan can get you from the East Coast to popular Western European destinations at an extremely competitive rate. For example, a one-way flight from Washington, DC (IAD) to Paris (CDG) costs 35,000 points and $78 CAD.

Alternatively, Iberia charges a dirt-cheap 17,000 Avios points one way between Spain and select U.S. cities such as New York (JFK), Chicago (ORD) and Boston (BOS). If you don’t mind first flying to Madrid and then buying a cheap ticket to your European city of choice, you can potentially save a lot of Chase points. Just note that Iberia tends to charge around $100 in fees each way.

Transfer to Flying Blue or Virgin Atlantic. The loyalty program of Air France and KLM, Flying Blue charges bewilderingly low prices to Asia. You can fly all the way to the Indian Subcontinent for just 35,000 points, or you can fly to the Middle East for even less. Here’s a sample itinerary between Dallas and Tel Aviv for 30,000 miles and 84.60 euros one-way on Air France.

Or, if you’re heading to Japan, you can transfer 30,000 points to Virgin Atlantic for a one-way flight to Tokyo (HND) from the Western U.S. However, these flights can be difficult to find. And ANA often incurs higher fees than most other airlines—which Virgin Atlantic will pass along to you.

Transfer to Flying Blue or Virgin Atlantic. You can reach Northern Africa for under 25,000 Flying Blue miles. In some cases, it’s cheaper than a visit to Europe. Below is a flight from Washington, DC (IAD) to Casablanca, Morocco (CMN) on Air France for 22,000 miles and $91.10 each way.

Alternatively, Virgin Atlantic charges considerably less for flights on its partner, Air France, than you’ll find directly with Flying Blue. For example, you’ll pay just 38,000 Virgin Atlantic miles one-way between the U.S. and Cape Town on Air France.

Transfer to Flying Blue or British Airways. Admittedly, finding round-trip travel to Australia and French Polynesia for under 100,000 points can be difficult. One exception is from Los Angeles (LAX) to Tahiti (PPT) on Air France for just 27,500 Flying Blue miles and $63.90 one-way.

Getting to Australia will take a bit more creativity. One trick to lower your award price is to book two strategic flights via British Airways: One between the Continental U.S. and Hawaii and another between Hawaii and Australia.

Award flights from the West Coast to Honolulu (HNL) cost 16,000 Avios points and $5.60. Book this as the first leg of your trip.

Then, book a flight from Honolulu to Sydney (SYD) for 25,750 Avios points and $71.60. This will total 41,750 points one-way—meaning you’ll need 83,500 points to pull off a round-trip. That’s considerably less than 100,000 points, though slightly above the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s current bonus. You may have to put a month or two of additional spending on the card before you can afford this trip.

Bonus: Book Airfare Through Chase Travel

Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders can use points to “buy” flights through Chase Travel at a rate of 1.25 cents each. Because you’ll have a minimum of 79,000 points after meeting the minimum spend to earn the Chase Sapphire Preferred bonus, you’ll have at least $987.50 to spend on airfare by our math. This may well take you just about anywhere you want to go—without the extra step of transferring your points to airline loyalty programs.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Is a Good Card to Keep—Even After the Bonus Is Spent

The Chase Sapphire Preferred benefits make it an excellent travel credit card worth keeping for someone who takes a trip at least once or twice each year. For a $95 annual fee, you’ll get:

  • Up to $50 in annual statement credits to reimburse hotel stayed booked through Chase Travel
  • Solid travel protections, including trip delay insurance, primary rental car insurance and baggage delay insurance
  • Limited-time benefits with DoorDash, Lyft, Peloton and Instacart

And the card’s generous earning rate can help you quickly replenish your points stash with everyday spending. You’ll earn:

  • 5X points on travel purchased through Chase Travel (excluding the $50 annual hotel credit reimbursement)
  • 5X points on qualifying Lyft rides (through March 31, 2025)
  • 2X points on all other travel purchases
  • 3X points on dining (including eligible delivery services, takeout and dining out)
  • 3X points on online groceries (excluding Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs)
  • 3X points on select streaming services

You’ll earn 1X points on all other purchases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the chase sapphire preferred worth it.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is worth it if you can organically get more than $95 in value from the card each year to offset the annual fee. With its various travel insurances and valuable rewards program, frequent travelers shouldn’t have difficulty justifying the fee.

Is It Hard to Get the Chase Sapphire Preferred?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred enforces a few unique application restrictions. You won’t be approved for the card if you’ve opened five or more credit cards (with the exception of most small-business cards) in the past 24 months with the unofficial Chase 5/24 rule. Also, you won’t be approved if you currently have any card in the Sapphire credit card family or if you’ve earned a Sapphire welcome bonus in the past 48 months as a previous cardmember.

Is the Sapphire Preferred Better Than the Reserve?

In terms of benefits, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is better than the Chase Sapphire Preferred . It comes with airport lounge access, hundreds of dollars in easy-to-use travel credits each year and more. However, its annual fee is $550—which is substantially higher than the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s $95 annual fee.
