Travelers, I have a confession to make: I’m an Osprey backpack addict. I’ve had four of their bags in five years — and not because they don’t last but simply because I can’t help it. I’m 100% Osprey Obsessed!

Just to set the record straight, they don’t sponsor me to promote their backpacks. No, I’ve paid the hefty (but totally worth it) price tag for each and every one of my Osprey backpacks.

The Osprey luggage brand is filled with high quality, durable, and fashionable travel gear, suited for any of your future adventures. But because the price tag is a little higher than you might expect to spend, I decided to put together a list of the best Osprey backpacks so you can find the perfect one for you. This way you only need to get one (though, if you get four I won’t judge you)!

Best Osprey Backpack for Hiking: Aura 65L

The Aura 65 is one of the best Osprey backpacks for hiking, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced outdoor adventurer!

This Osprey backpack offers a ventilated mesh back panel with an ultra-comfortable waffle foam harness. The hip belt provides superb fit, while the AirSpeed suspension provides great carry. The Aura 65 comes in an array of color choices and is easy to clean, with lightweight ripstop fabric.

While a great Osprey backpack is an investment, if you have a long hike planned and still want to feel good at the end of the day, then it’s well worth it. The anti-gravity system will help relieve pressure and stave off any unwanted pain!

Plus, the Osprey Aura 65 has plenty of storage as it’s covered in storage, and it includes loops to carry your hiking sticks. You also could fashion the straps underneath to hold a tent or a mat if you’re carrying one along your travels.

While this is one of the best Osprey backpacks on the market, it’s a better choice for hiking backpacking vs. travel backpacking. But it’s a great travel bag choice if you’re not ready to go carry-on only and won’t be carrying anything valuable inside it because the top loader doesn’t lock, and it isn’t properly sized for carry-on.

Best Osprey Backpack For Space: Farpoint 55L (40+15)

The Farpoint 55 is one of the best Osprey backpacks on the market with its lightweight build, durable ripstop fabric, and extra space!

The Farpoint 55 comes with a detachable 15L bag in addition to the 40L main bag. This Osprey backpack is featherlight, perfect for a carry-on, and locks, making it great for safe travels.

Size-wise, the backapack has a fixed unisex harness in two sizes (either S/M or M/L), a spacer back panel with light wire suspension, and an ErgoPull hipbelt closure.

This is a great bag for all travel backpackers and definitely one of the best Osprey backpacks — if not the best. And it’s easy to pack! The bag opens fully so you can pack and unpack it easily — and if you pair it with some packing cubes for organization, it’s the perfect choice.

While the Farpoint 55 might be the best Osprey backpack, I do find that the compartments aren’t super functional, and you can’t attach the daypack to the main bag easily when it’s packed. Plus, if you’re planning on using the Farpoint 55 as a carry-on you’ll have to remove the daypack.

Most travelers have confirmed that they’re able to use this Osprey backpack as a carry-on. It’s possible you might have issues with budget airlines that have smaller size limitations. To be safe, please double check with your airline.

If you love the Farpoint 55 but you need something smaller to avoid any issues, the Farpoint 40 is slightly shorter at 21 inches, making it a great smaller version of the best backpacking backpacks for travel. Note that the Farpoint 40 does not include a daypack, but you could purchase one separately if you need it.

Best Osprey Backpack for Wheels: Meridian 22

The Osprey Meridian 22 -inch backpack is the deluxe traveler for this series, offering 60L of space. It’s one of the best Osprey backpacks for travel if you’re looking for a little luxury and some wheels in your pack!

The Osprey Meridian offers some great organizational features, such as internal and back panel compartments, a laptop compatible feature, and an adjustable, removable back panel suspension system. It also comes with a zippered detachable daypack.

The Osprey Meridian 22 is now sold out, however, here’s a similar style .

Unlike some of the other Osprey backpack models, the Meridian is suitcase style with great wheels, removable backpack straps, and lockable options. Plus it’s carry-on sized. That said, it’s heavier than some of the other choices, and the structured shape makes it difficult to make full use of the space it has.

All in all, the Meridian 22 is one of the best Osprey backpacks for backpacking travelers who prefer wheels and crave the occasional flexibility of using the bag as a backpack. But it’s certainly not for everyone.

Best Osprey Backpack For Versatile Travel: Ozone 21.5

The Osprey Ozone 21.5 is one of my favorite bags because it’s lightweight, durable, and lockable — making it perfect for a versatile array of travel.

If you’re headed out on business, the Ozone 21.5 is one of the best Osprey bags for those looking to pack light and travel carry-on only. The Ozone 21.5 has 42L of volume and only weighs 4.53 lbs., making it roomy and light. It’s made with easy-to-clean, ripstop fabric, has a laptop compartment, and locks for extra security.

While a few travelers comment about the single-bar handle, I’ve been able to port this bag around as my carry-on for all my international flights, including budget airlines like Air Asia. It fits perfectly in the airline luggage size racks, and I’ve fit it easily underneath cramped bus seats and limited overhead compartments.

The downside to the Ozone 21.5 is the fact that it doesn’t have straps, so it’s not a traditional backpack design like the others on the list, but it is surely one of the best designs Osprey has to offer, especially if you’re looking for an alternative to straps!

I love that it has a contemporary look that’s not too sporty, and yet it’s durable enough to handle the wear-and-tear of long-term traveling.

This is one of the best Osprey backpacks for its superior but compact design. Even full, the Farpoint 40 is lightweight and is a great carry-on size, working for most commercial aircraft. And while it has the look of a backpack, it opens like a suitcase, making it easy to retrieve your things.

If you’ve been a reader of TFG for a while, you may have noticed I’m incredibly brand loyal. Osprey is a brand that first impressed me on my 9-month round-the-world trip with the  Aura 65L , and it’s been my go-to travel and outdoor gear brand ever since!

The Transporter 44L backpack is the ultimate carry-on backpack for air travel. It opens flat like a suitcase and has ample storage space, so with strategic packing, you can take this on longer journeys and fit all you need! It’s also a great option if you have kids and need a functional bag for storing essentials. 

It features interior and exterior pockets to keep everything organized, a padded laptop sleeve for laptops up to 16”, and compression straps.

Osprey Waist Pack Tempest 6 

I’ve been wanting something like this  Osprey waist pack  since last year when I went hiking at Red River Gorge. It was hot and having a daypack felt a little uncomfortable on my back, so I wanted something smaller and lighter to carry a few of my essentials. This was perfect!

So glad when I found this on the  Osprey website . It has space for 2 water bottles, 2 decent sizes stash pockets on the hip belt, and 2 interior pockets that are spacious enough to hold my  sunglasses , my  Eddie Bauer long sleeve , and a couple of snacks.

Why an Osprey Backpack?

When planning my 9-month Round the World trip in 2010, I wanted a bag that would last the duration of my travels. That’s when I found my first Osprey backpack in the REI Outlet and scored an awesome discount during online Black Friday sales.

During those 9 months as a new and “official” backpacker, my bag underwent abuse like you wouldn’t believe! From stuffing it to the brim to mean baggage handlers throwing it around and contaminating it with the dirtiest floors around the world, this bag was pushed to the limits.

But at the end of it all, it still looked as good as new and was perfectly intact.

Since then, I’ve been in love with Osprey backpacks and have never looked back. Not only do I love traveling with an Osprey bag, but their construction and functionality are superior to many of the products on the market. Specifically, Osprey uses quality fabric, a lightweight design, and is quite durable.

Osprey Uses Superior Fabric

The fabric Osprey backpacks are built to set them apart from other brands. I love the lightweight ripstop fabric. It’s easy to clean, repels dirt and stains, and is water resistant. Technically, the last one isn’t isn’t advertised but that’s been my experience so far.

Osprey Backpacks Are Lightweight

Because the fabric used in an Osprey backpack is so thin yet highly functional, it’s also incredibly lightweight. This is super important when you’re trying to pack light (though I’ll note that the Meridian featured is a little more heavyweight than the other designs).

Travel backpacks like the Osprey designs are pretty expensive. This makes sense considering long-term travelers or backpackers need gear that’s built to last. The Osprey is quality-built.

As mentioned earlier, I carted mine around during my 2010 Round the World trip. I highly recommend the Osprey brand due to its reliable reputation — don’t skip out on the investment!

Osprey Features Minimal Design

Osprey has minimalist design options for people who want to “backpack” around the world without looking like a hiker. The color pallet is also minimalistic, with nice, inoffensive colors (like the subdued greys and blacks I love). But if you’re looking for something a little more feminine, they have pretty but non-flashy colors, so you can show your personality but not stand out like an amateur.

Which Osprey Will You Choose?

If I knew then what I know now, I would say to skip the top loader Aura and go straight to the Farpoint if you’re a backpacker-style traveler. Why? Because the Farpoint zips and locks, making it safer, plus you get a carry-on size main pack plus a smaller daypack in one. You can even get this Farpoint on its own without the daypack.

For travel, this is by far one of the best Osprey backpacks.

For travelers who prefer wheels, especially someone with back problems like me, I’d say to skip the backpack straps altogether avoiding the Meridian , and choose the Ozone instead. If you’re a long-term traveler or like to get off the beaten path, then the average suitcase wheels aren’t good enough, so you need something rugged with durable wheels like either of these two options.

If you’re trying to decide between the Osprey Porter vs the Farpoint, the main difference is the design. The Osprey Porter has a straightjacket design with padded panels that cover the bag and clip in the front, whereas the Farpoint does not. The Farpoint also doesn’t have the bottom carry handle that you’d find on the Porter.

My Osprey has lasted YEARS, I love the idea of the Meridian .. might need to upgrade!

I’m heading for Germany, France, and the U.K. for a 3 week trip. I’ve used smaller, wheeled suitcases in the past, but they tip over too easily, especially on cobblestones. I’m going to the Osprey Transporter 44 as a check through, and it’s companion carry on, which has a slot so it can slide onto the handle of the Transporter. I’m going to be traveling by train, and walking loads of cobblestone streets, so I needed something easily managed and compact. Fully packed, the Transporter weighs only 32lbs- and I’ve even gotten my hiking poles into it easily. I’ve used Osprey backpacks for years, and they just keep getting better!

I use the Osprey Fairpoint 36 which is perfect for my size. Handy because it has wheels as well, but the extension pole takes up space in the bag. It’s an inconvenience, but I deal with it for the convenience of the wheels.

I have gotten so much use out of my Osprey Farpoint 55! Easy to take carry-on or tuck the straps for checking. I also loved that there was sizing for more-petite frames. It fits me so well and is comfortable to carry. It’s really durable too. Takes a beating and still looks great. Osprey really makes great products.

So glad to find these reviews after a friend recommended Osprey. Seriously considering making the switch to a backpack for my carry-on for my upcoming trip to Europe and this helps so much!

I have to say that I have always found many of your recommendation incredibly helpful. I traveled to Europe for two weeks with a carry on and it made life so much easier. Specifically with the Osprey Meridian carryon. It’s amazing how much the bag can fit. I removed the straps from the compartment where the telescopic handle comes up and used it as a laptop sleeve so I didn’t have to put in my handbag. Made going through check points so much easier. I’m planning a 7 day trip to Wyoming in June 2020 and chose Osprey bags before reading this blog. I have decided on the Osprey Porter 30 as my carry-on and their Daylite Travel as my personal item. I found the site in my search for good tips, tricks and most importantly help with my wardrobe. I will be staying with a friend and I know we will be a day or two at least of hiking excursions. Determining what I should pack is a challenge that is really starting to give me anxiety even though the trip is so far away. I’m also a plus sized lady so reading Erika Cooper’s blog helped. I feel if I go to my friend for clothing advise now she might just laugh at me for planning my wardrobe so far in advance.

I requested (and received) the Sojourn 45 for Christmas last year and finally took it on my trip to Vancouver Island this fall. I haven’t yet used the backpack straps so can’t speak to those. However, it was a nice light bag that I have yet to be able to fill too full. I had my 4 Compass Rose packing cubes, a pair of Chelsea boots, a pair of Toms plus my toiletry bag then on my way home, put my flat(ish) Sherpani Sojourn in the bottom of all that and I still was not over full. So far, I’m a fan.

Love my Osprey! My husband and I both got one on eBay before our three week honeymoon for a great price. We use them about every other weekend, as we travel to Toronto frequently and two years later with lots of use, they are like brand new.

In September I am going to Rome for 3 days, flying by Aegean airlines to Athens for 3 days, doing a 4 day cruise to the islands, 3 days on Mykonos island (should I get a rental car or taxis around the island?) then back to Athens for 2 days. I have Never packed small. I usually end a trip with 1 oversized suitcase and a duffel or midsize suitcase(Peru, China, Mexico). I had decided to downgrade to an Osprey Ozone 75 L bag and was feeling pretty good about it but now am wondering if I should get the smaller 42L bag? I am a plus size girl size 16. I have packing cubes. I have been reading your blog. I am trying but dont know how to downsize and keep space for souvenirs and shoes and all the other things I will need. Not sure how to pack for the weather. As a bigger girl my swimsuit is heavy if I bring 2 they will take up a ton of space and weight oh and I have Plantar fasciitis, I really like the Vionic Tide II sandals you recommend they are amazing but will they be enough for 2 weeks….Help please!

I am wanting a rolling backpack. I am trying to decide between the Ozone 22″46L and the Ozone 18″/36L. I will be going to Scotland with a stopover in Dublin and taking a very small local flight to Edinburgh. I want to make sure I am not stopped with my luggage or having to have it put in the plane. Each airline and airport staff has different ways of enforcing or NOT enforcing their luggage policies. It’s honestly very difficult to tell you for sure that it will or won’t go through. If you’re flying a budget airline or domestic flight you’ll for sure be hassled but international is a bit more relaxed.

I’m sorry if it’s not the perfect answer you were hoping for. If it really worries you, get an 18″ not 22″ luggage. Hope this helps!

I just came back from Peru and Ecuador using the ozone rolling pack. It is not a backpack, but it was heaven…..so light and no questions asked about its size for carry on. I also had a backpack I shoved under the seats. I managed to use these two pieces of luggage for almost a month, with weather being chilly and extremely hot . I even packed my own mask and snorkel! I will now purchase a good smaller backpack from them as mine didn’t have a good water bottle holder. Love my ozone roller though!

Is there a certain way that the backpack should fit besides comfortably? I mean should it sit in a certain spot and be a certain length away from you neck?

Would you recommend the Osprey Farpoint 80 for a 4-month trip or would you suggest getting one of the smaller ones?

My question is more around Osprey hiking backpacks as I am going trekking in Sapa for 2 nights in October. I have had a look at some packs in other stores and by the sizes I saw, I would think a 20-30L would be sufficient for 3 day/2night however on the Osprey website they recommend that size for one day hikes only. I will be wearing one set of clothes, so will only be taking one extra set hiking clothes (trousers, singlet, ls shirt), tights and light jumper for at night, socks, underwear, havaianas, basic toiletries, scarf, wireless charger, hat. I don’t have a large camera and won’t be taking my laptop but I would like to fit maybe a litre of water and some snacks as I am not sure the distance between rest/water stops.

Hi Ange, a 20L-30L is perfect for a short trek. In fact, I used a 20L for a 4 day trek to Machu Picchu. Most people that trekked Sapa while I was there just used a regular size backpack – about 20L- 25L.

I slightly disagree with you concerning the Meridian vs Ozone, mainly because the Meridian’s backpack straps could easily be removed, leaving a great big pouch for flat shoes or dirty stuff. So when you know you’ll probably not needing the backpack stuff (visiting a big city a couple of days where wheels will be sufficient), you’ll end with a nice trolley.

When choosing the Ozone instead and possibly need backpacking sometimes, you’lle be stucked because there are no straps at all, and you’ll end only with a nice trolley.

So for my point of view the Meridian is slightly more versatile.

Hi Zanza, thanks for your comment! Yes 100% agreed the Meridian is more versatile. For me, however, the Meridian doesn’t work as well because I can’t use the backpack feature anymore with my back issues so the Ozone now does the job 🙂

By definition most carry on luggage will weigh less than 10KG.

If you have a small day pack carrying some of the heavy dense items such as books and computers the ozone may way less than 7-8 kg. Every kilo counts especially when using Asian carriers.

I have tried on the convertible bags but I find that they are too heavy. I usually use a backpack for international travel. I purchased the ozone 22 for my daughter who is still a university student.

Hi Alex! I just purchased the M/L Osprey 55 and am now worried because it doesn’t look like it will fit carry-on size (25 inches it is.) The Osprey 40 is 21 inches- so it would meet airlines rules. Do you have experience with the 40?

Hi Amanda! Oh no, the 55 used to work carry-on but so much has changed the past couple of years. I now travel with a different bag so I don’t know if it would work but reviews seem to say it’s good. Are you flying with budget airlines like Ryan Air or Air Asia? For international should be good but if you want to be 100% sure the 40L should be almost exactly the same just a few inches shorter. Let me know!

Hey Alex, do you have any experience with packs designed for women? A few years ago I looked and looked for a maximim carry-on size for my 5’2″, narrow-shouldered frame and settled on an Osprey Porter 46. It’s now accompanied me on several trips, and I have no complaints about it as a bag, but it’s still not the most comfortable and reminds me that it wasn’t built for my frame. Have you come across anything new that might be better for the smaller among us?

I’m also 5’2″ and the size S/M Farpoint 40L bag was very comfortable for me. I’d also suggest looking into Junior or Teen sizes too. One of my first backpacks was a teen size and it seemed to be the perfect size!

Stay away from one size bags and try to find women specific styles in size small or teen. Good luck with your search!

I just took the Osprey Sirrus on a month long trip to Cuba. It’s a 36L Womens pack. It was great. I’m 5’4″ but have a narrow frame and find that the straps on mens size packs often cut off the circulation in my arms so these days I always try to go with Womens packs. It’s important to try on whatever pack you are considering If you are going for a backpack style because the frames vary, even within a brand. The 36L was a good size for a month or more in a subtropical to tropical climate. I will be getting a larger pack for longer trips to colder or more mixed climates where my rolling luggage will not go. And it will likely be an Osprey!

The Farpoint is a men’s backpack and it’s available in  4 different sizes . You can see some of their basic specifications in the product information below.

The smallest version of this backpack can also be a carry-on , but the other 3 versions are too large, and they would have to be checked. And, as you can see from the table, the 55 and 70 Faipoints also feature a zip-off daypack .

That is actually a smaller backpack that can be detached from the body of the Fairpoint and it is much more practical for day-to-day adventures. Those are the main differences between these 4 different versions of this Osprey backpacks.

As for their other features, they are very much similar – apart from their sizes, obviously. All of them feature compression straps that will secure the load of the backpack, as well as a padded sleeve for your electronics . The 40L version has a padded tablet sleeve, whereas the larger 3 backpacks have a laptop sleeve.

The compression straps also act as an anti-theft feature because once they are buckled, the zipper of the backpack is not visible and cannot be accessed that easily – which is a big benefit!

All 4 versions of this backpack are equipped with  padded, adjustable shoulder straps  that will ensure your comfort throughout the day. And also, all of them have several different pockets, both inside the main compartment as well as on the exterior.

Another great thing that Osprey remembered to include in the design of all of the backpacks is the sternum strap with an emergency whistle .

Osprey Fairview (For Women)

The Fairview backpack is very similar to the Fairpoint; in fact, it is actually the women’s version of it, and it shares most of Fairpoint’s features. This particular women’s backpack is available in 3 variants.

The 40L version conforms to most carry-on standards, and you can read in detail about it in this review. It is the only Fairview that  doesn’t feature a zip-off daypack or removable sleeping bag straps . The rest of its features are very much alike to those of the larger two backpacks.

All 3 Fairviews have a padded laptop and tablet sleeve , as well as a  scratch-free zippered pocket  for your phone or sunglasses. Additionally, all of them have a zip-away mesh back panel, which allows you to open up the bag like a suitcase.

All in all, Fairview is an excellent choice for women, particularly because of its ergonomic design. But, it is not the only choice – in the rest of the review we’ll take a look at some Osprey Unisex travel backpacks, so stay tuned for more.

The back system of the Fairview was designed specifically to better fit the shape of the female body, with the  ergonomically shaped hipbelt, yoke, harness, and back panel .

In addition to that, the shoulder straps are adjustable and padded – all of these features were put in place to ensure that you stay comfortable while carrying this bag. Well, as comfortable as you can be with 40+ pounds on your shoulders.

The zipper pullers on the Fairview are all  padlock compatible . However, if you want to utilize this added security feature, you will have to porches a padlock separately. The larger two backpacks also allow for a ‘kangaroo style’ attachment of the daypack , for when you want to have all your smaller valuables handy.

In the rest of the review, we’ll take a look at 3 great unisex backpacks. All of them are available in a few different sizes and colors, and all of them have something in common – they feature wheels. So if you prefer to have to option of wheeling your backpack around once you get tired of carrying it, one of these might be just perfect for you!

Osprey Sojourn

The Sojourn is a convertible piece of luggage that is available in 3 different sizes. The smallest one (45 L) conforms to most carry-on standards, whereas the larger two would have to check if you were to take them on a flight. You can see some of their basic specifications below.

When it comes to the Sojourn backpacks, the 3 versions have all the exact same features; they  only differ in their respective sizes . That is what I particularly like about this model – you don’t have to sacrifice any good features if you opt for the smallest version of it.

The  back panel is easily convertible .

What I like the most about it is that there is not much fuss when switching the Sojourn from shoulder straps to wheels. The process is quick, easy, and very neat. Additionally, the  telescopic wheel handle is made of aluminum  and can be secured into the extended position with the push of a button.

The Sojourn backpacks feature compression straps both inside and outside , and you can rest assured your stuff will stay in the exact same place you packed it in. In addition to that, there is also an  adjustable harness, as well as a hipbelt . So, when you are actually carrying the bag on your shoulders, you will be able to secure it tightly and distribute its load among your entire torso.

The organizational freak in you will love the Sojourn because it has a lot of different pockets, both inside and outside the backpacks. However, there is  no dedicated laptop pocket , which is something you should be aware of. Osprey Transporter Wheeled Duffel

The Osprey Transporter range is perfect for travel and the Transporter Wheeled Duffel is on the top of the list.

Sure, this is not actually a travel “backpack” but it is perfect for those who don’t want to have to “carry” their luggage most of the time but want the easy packing that a duffel offers.

In many ways, the Transporter Duffel is like the Patagonia Black Hole , which is also super popular. And it even looks the same with the glossy recycled Polyester they have used.

Osprey has kept this duffel nice and simple, with a huge packing compartment combined with compression straps to keep things in place. On the lid there is a zippered mesh panel for all those fiddly extras.

Osprey Ozone Duplex

The Ozone Osprey Duplex is another great backpack for travel. It comes with the convertible aspects of the Farpoint but also includes a detachable daypack. Which as we all know, a day pack is a must for travel.

On the inside, the Ozone Convertible doesn’t differ much from the previous two backpacks. It also has  interior compression straps , but it has an internal organization pocket as well as an internal security pocket.

The  padded laptop sleeve is also hidden away in the daypack , and not in the main compartment of the backpack. I particularly like this feature, because it means that when you want to take just the daypack along with you, you will still have a designated compartment for your electronics.

The Ozone Duplex has various padded handles for when you are carrying this as “luggage. But also packable straps that can be hidden on the back panel like with the Farpoint/Fairview series . It also has a handy shoulder strap should you just want to get somewhere fast and not unpack all the straps.

All in all, this is a smart combination of a large travel pack and a daypack with all the great features Osprey normally puts into just one of these pack types. It’s just that in this case, you get them all!

Things You Should Consider When Choosing An Osprey Travel Backpack

Carry-on versions.

If you are going to be spending a lot of time on airplanes, you should definitely get a carry-on version. That way you will save a lot of money on baggage fees, which in my opinion, makes these backpacks even more valuable.

The backpacks that have a capacity of up to 50L usually conform to most airlines’ standards for a carry-on. However, that can depend on how much stuff you pack inside them. If you over-pack your luggage, it will weigh more and you might not be able to bring it inside the cabin. Therefore, pack wisely.

So,  look out for the number that’s in the name of the backpack . Anything up to 50L (and maybe 55 if you’re really lucky) should be just the right size for a carry-on.

Detachable Daypack

Even if you think you don’t really need a detachable daypack, consider getting one; trust me you’ll love it. I’m telling you this from personal experience; a friend talked me into getting a travel backpack with a detachable daypack, and I’ve been forever grateful to him ever since.

With a detachable daypack, you won’t have to carry all of your items wherever you go. This means that there will be much less strain on your shoulders and back, and you won’t get tired so easily. Additionally, all Osprey daypacks have padded laptop sleeves and several different pockets that will keep all your necessities perfectly safe.

This information will be listed in the tables that are at the beginning of each section . Additionally, it is also quite easy to tell from the pictures if an Osprey travel backpack features a smaller, detachable daypack – if it looks like it’s pregnant then it most certainly does.

Wheels and a Wheel Handle

In this review, we will take a detailed look at several backpacks that have the option of being wheeled around. This is particularly beneficial for everyone who is considering getting a big piece of luggage.

With a big backpack, you will have a lot of weight on your shoulders. Naturally, you will get tired more easily, and in those moments, having the option of wheeling it around like a suitcase will really come in handy.

If you are specifically looking for this type of backpack,  then immediately hop over to the latter part of the review . All of them are unisex and highly adjustable, so they will fit everyone perfectly.

Which Osprey Travel Backpack Is The Best Choice For You?

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of these backpacks. First of all, you should decide on whether you want to get a backpack that you can also wheel around when your shoulders get tired, or you just want a regular one.

If you don’t think you will need the option of wheels, then get either the Farpoint or the Fairview – depending on your gender obviously. Additionally, these two backpacks are much better options for shorter trips, due to their lightweight and design.

The  Osprey Farpoint is an excellent men’s backpack if a backpack is all you are looking for. It comes in several different sizes, which makes it easy to pick one perfect for your specific needs.

For a shorter trip, I’d say the 55 is the ideal one. Even though it’s not really meant to be a carry-on, you might just be able to sneak it inside the cabin – if you don’t fully pack it that is. I say that because the daypack can be detached from the main body of the Farpoint, which will in turn make it smaller and lighter.

For women, the ergonomic design of the Osprey Fairview will keep you comfortable every step of the way.  In addition to that, the sternum straps and the hipbelt will just enhance the feeling of comfort, and the backpack won’t feel like such a big burden.

You’ll also love the ability of the larger two versions to utilize just the daypack when you’re on the go. Honestly, in my opinion, regardless of the length of your trip, choose an Osprey backpack that has a detachable backpack. You will definitely use it much more than you need to, and trust me, you do not want to have to carry all of your items with you all the time.

If you would prefer to have the option of switching to wheels when you get tired of carrying the backpack on your shoulders, then I would have to recommend the  Osprey Ozone Convertible .

I’d go for the Ozone solely because it seems to offer a fuller package than the other two – it is lighter, it has a larger daypack and it comes in a carry-on size. And in addition to all of that, it is the cheapest out of the bunch. I don’t know about you, but saving $50 is always a big plus in my book!

Best Osprey Travel Backpack

As most of you know, as a big fanboy and devoted first-hand customer...

...I've been publishing in-depth guides to all kinds of Osprey backpacks ( full post list at the bottom of this post ) for the last 2-3 years. 

Recently I'm getting asked a lot about my best Osprey travel backpack picks, so here you go.

Now... Here's a question you must ask yourself before anything : 

• "Should I get a travel  backpack or a backpacking  backpack for traveling ?"

I always recommend choosing this according to which one of these following two typical buyer profiles describes your situation the best: 

• "I'll mostly be carrying my backpack between transportation-hotel-airport. Most of the time my pack will be waiting for me back in my hotel room when I'm traveling around the city." 

You're a traveler . Get a travel backpack . 

Traveler organizers and front openings will provide easy access to your entire inventory when you lay it onto your hotel room bed (or something similar). Additional carry handles save a lot of time and frustration at the airport and transportation vehicles. 

I do recommend reading this entire short post since Osprey backpacks are  far from cheap , but if you don't have time to do so...

...then find my quick recommendations  below. 

To most of you , I can recommend the great Farpoint 40  (women's counterpart is  Fairview 40 ) my eyes closed after using it for 2.5 - 3 years. 

Farpoint's less comfortable but better organized cousin Porter 46 would be a good alternative - or even a better choice if you think you'll never walk more than, say, half an hour with your pack. 

I don't recommend Ozone Duplex Series (more on this later). 

If you think 40 - 50 liters is too small for you , don't get a larger Porter (comfort will literally start sucking ), get a larger Farpoint (55, 55 trek, 70, 75 trek, or 80). 

I'd personally recommend the Farpoint 55 (women's counterpart is Fairview 55 ) and make use of the super useful daypack. 

I'm not fond of 70 & plus liters because they're too big for a travel pack IMO. I'd just get a luggage instead. 

If you'd like your pack to have wheels , then I'd recommend you the beast Sojourn 80L/28" . 

• "My backpack will often be with me when I'm traveling and I'll most likely need access to my items inside when I'm out in the streets." 

You're a traveling backpacker . Get a travel backpacking (or a backpacking ) backpack . 

In most cases you won't have access to a bed (or something similar) to lay your backpack onto, so a suitcase-like front opening won't be useful. Instead, you'll want and appreciate a pack that sits upright when put down and offers top access to the main compartment. 

This alone makes things much easier in the streets. 

If this is you, then I'd recommend you the  Archeon 70  (women's counterpart is  Archeon 65 Women's ). It's specifically designed for people with your unique purpose - it's a travel backpacking backpack (released in summer 2019). 

If your secondary activity will be overnight camping, then I'd recommend you the  Atmos AG 65  (women's counterpart is  Aura AG 65 ). 

Compared to Osprey's all travel backpacks, Atmos/Aura are MUCH more comfortable  &  ventilated . They also offer an  additional compartment  at the bottom and more  external gear attachment capability. 

If your load will be quite a bit on the heavy side,  Aether AG 70  (women's counterpart is  Ariel AG 65 ) would be a better choice.

For most of us (including me), the max limit of our backpack decides what and how much of them we're packing. Not us. 

What's more... it's not all that easy to be able to try and size the end volume of your belongings anyway. And I'm not even getting to the fact that most of us don't even want to bother. 

Luckily, this isn't the only option we have in hand. We can simply go after what's generally recommended. 

General recommendation: 40-45 liters 

I personally know many people traveled to SE Asia, Europe or South America with their 40 liters packs for as long as 2 months and were perfectly fine. 

After seeing so many inexperienced beginner traveler folks doing this, I don't even look at it as an extreme example anymore . 

It's more of a rule of thumb for me: 40 liters is all you really need!

You can easily pack 3 changes of summer clothes (only 1 pair of shoes, though) as well as other traveling essentials. 

A bit larger: 55-60 liters

This becomes more acceptable during winter due to thicker garments and some necessary extra gear taking up more space. 

During the summer I'm pretty sure you can get away with 40 liters perfectly fine. But if you desire to go larger, that's OK, but I really don't recommend going any larger than 55-60. 

The first thing you should pay attention here: Make sure the pack is equipped with a detachable zip-off daypack . 

A daypack does not only increase versatility but it also makes the remaining backpack more carry-on friendly when detached. 

Overall top picks 

My good old Farpoint 40 . 

In my opinion, Osprey's best travel backpack is absolutely Farpoint 40  (women's counterpart is  Fairview 40 ).

Most of you probably saw this coming even when I just mentioned 40 liters and nothing else. 

Because, if you've made any research on Osprey travel backpacks before reading this post, then you probably know that the incredible comfort, durability and pretty looks of Farpoint 40 goes without saying. 

Bonus : It's carry on size. Osprey seem to have added this literally onto the name of the pack as of 2020 - and now it's called  Farpoint Travel Pack Carry-on 40 . 

• Carry on size limits

Technically speaking, more often than not, airlines will allow packs up to 22" x 14" x 9" . Sometimes you'll see them drawing the line at a total of 45 linear inches (height + width + depth) . 

You're likely to get away with larger packs though (as long as you don't piss off the staff), because it's mostly down to their personal judgments. They mostly won't size the pack.

I've literally traveled everywhere with my Farpoint 40 and the thing I like the most is its unbeatable comfort. You can also read my full Farpoint 40 review . 

Click on image to enlarge. I must say I've never used my Farpoint 40 in duffel mode. But the side carry handle (bottom right) saved me tons of time and energy - especially in the airport & business meetings when I had a laptop. 

After 3 years of use, it doesn't display any sign of weakness in terms of durability. 

In all honesty, though; when Osprey is the brand at hand, I don't really consider this as a benefit.

All Osprey backpacks are solid in this regard anyway. 

I also really like its looks - and I own this Volcanic Grey color . 

In reality, it isn't Volcanic Grey though - but Green Grey .

I do have two gripes with Farpoint 40:  

• Having the laptop sleeve behind the main compartment would not only have made packing easier, but also have made the pack even more comfortable. For the latter, luckily you don't wish any extra comfort with Farpoint 40 . 
• I'd like to see an internal traveler organizer. 

What fits inside a Farpoint 40 . 

Protip : If you'll pack a laptop into its sleeve, pack it before anything else . 

Otherwise the bloated main compartment will bend the sleeve and make packing the laptop afterwards more difficult. 

• "How large is Farpoint 40's laptop sleeve?"

It fits laptops up to 17" (including huge AlienWare). Once you're past 15.6" the sleeve height doesn't suffice although the pack still gets closed without a hitch. 

Despite these two downsides, Farpoint 40 is still my top pick.

Porter 46. 

If you'll almost never walk with the pack though (which... I'd doubt) , then Porter 46 can be a better choice. 

It's closer to being a suitcase with straps rather than being a backpack (which is why a women's counterpart isn't even available). 

This causes a noticeable decrease in comfort, especially compared to a comfort monster like Farpoint 40. 

The advantage you get with getting a Porter 46 over a Farpoint 40, on the other hand, is perfect internal organization. 

6 liters of extra volume also allows you to stuff unexpectedly large items inside, like a speaker. If, by the way, you're looking for one, you might want to check out this  JBL Flip 5 vs Charge 4  post ( soundton.com is also my site, btw). 

All your frequently used items and electronics will be arranged better and hence you'll have easier access to them.

• Protected rear panel lockable zip laptop/tablet...
• Front panel organization pocket for easy access to...

Larger packs

Farpoint 55 's and their daypacks. 

If you think 40 liters wouldn't cut it for you (which would most likely be for the winter), and/or you'd really like to have the daypack option... 

Then I'd recommend you the  Farpoint 55  (women's counterpart is Fairview 55 ) over Farpoint 40 or Porter 46. 

If you're like most people, you prefer traveling with a small backpack rather than nothing. 

Rather than carrying tickets, passports, wallets, maps, cards, DSLR cameras and souvenirs; the daypack allows carrying a laptop as well in its laptop sleeve.

If you're like me and you like stopping by a local coffee shop with WiFi and work on stuff for a few hours & rest a little, then you'll absolutely need a daypack anyway. 

13 liter daypack of Farpoint 55 fits all these items without a hitch (laptops up to 15.6"). 

Technically speaking, the main backpack (daypack detached) is still outside the maximum carry on size limits I've laid out above. 

According to most of the reviews I've had chance to read, though; no-one had any problems taking the main backpack as a carry-on and the day-pack as the hand bag. 

This is because it's down to individual staff most of the time, as I already mentioned earlier in the post. 

70 liter Farpoint  would probably be too big for most people, so I'd recommend the 55. The temptation to stuff the pack with items you don't need that much will also be stronger with the 70. 

I'm always camp "go a little larger than you think" - but the things is, you're already "going a little larger" with 55 liters.

In my experience, 95% of people don't really need 70.

What about Ozone Duplex?  

Not recommended. Well,  not for now , at least. 

If you're unaware, unlike Farpoint 55 and 70 which consist of 1 daypack + 1 backpack; Ozone Duplex Series consist of 1 daypack + 1 cargo bag.

Ozone Duplex 65.

This sounds useful in theory - but works well just in that, theory. I have 3 serious gripes with this series that leads me to not recommend them: 

• When you force the size limits of cargo bag even just by a little bit, it gets bloated and the daypack bulges into your back . 
• Rather than Farpoint 55 & 70's tall design, Ozone Duplex 65's box-like shape causes the cargo bag's weight to be placed too far away from your body. It's less comfortable . 
• See image: Rear opening daypack ( left ) allows access to your items even when it's attached to the cargo bag ( right ). But as you see, the (misplaced) load lifters get in the way of access, so you must unbuckle them each time . 

It's more acceptable for brand new series to have major flaws like these. From what I've heard, Osprey is also on it and is actively working on tweaking its inaccurate design. 

I hope to see a more complete Duplex Series in the future and will edit this part of the post when it sees a fruitful update that address these major flaws. 

Until then, I see no point in getting a faulty pack like this when you have the option to get a proven solid pack like  Farpoint 55  (women's counterpart is Fairview 55 ) .

Top wheeled picks 

Whether chassis (wheels) in a backpack worth the significant increase in both price tag and weight comes down to your own needs and desires. 

But, generally speaking, I can tell you this: If you get a wheeled backpack, it's very likely that you won't be using it in backpack mode 90% of the time.

This is why I personally don't find it wise to invest in a backpack with chassis as long as the volume isn't over, say, 60-70 liters. 

If you'll absolutely get Sojourn, get Sojourn 80 . 

Because at any less than 60 liters of volume, a fully packed backpack typically ends up weighing somewhere between 8-10 kg. 

Most people would be able to carry this load at least for a few hours with ease. 

This is why I recommend a rather large one: Sojourn 80 .

Wheeled packs are meant to be used in backpack mode for small distances anyway - like staircases and rough surfaces.

It's closer to a being backpack compared to its other wheeled competitor Ozone 42 , which is closer to being a luggage. Unlike Sojourn Series, Ozone Series do offer a laptop compartment and come with an attached daypack. 

FYI, Meridian Series got discontinued.

Best Osprey Backpacking Backpacks for Travel

That said, if you are almost never going to go on overnight camping trips, then you need to check that out.

Because Osprey does offer some backpacking backpacks specifically made for traveling. 

Intended use: Just traveling

I'd recommend you the  70 L option of Archeon Series  (women's counterpart is  Archeon 65 Women's ), a traveling & backpacking backpack released in summer 2019. 

Because it's still new, the just is still out in terms of durability. 

That said, as I already clarified  in this post , I don't even take durability into account when comparing Osprey packs to one another. 

Not because they offer an incredible customer service (since it still costs the user some time and effort), but because I'm sure 90% of you will never even experience a durability issue and feel the need to contact. 

What's more, Archeon is made of a whooping 1880 denier recycled nylon - extra thick skin. 

Unlike Ozone Duplex 65, Osprey did hit the jackpot  by introducing the innovative opening system they introduced with their Archeon line. Offers both top and front access. 

So, on top of proven durability of Osprey's bells and whistles & typical fabrics, rock solid nylon boosts the durability even further - although it inevitably sacrifices weight. Archeon 70 is 5.5 - 6 lbs, depending on M and L sizes. 

Archeon Series aren't equipped with a laptop compartment - although you can use the internal reservoir sleeve for the same purpose and be perfectly fine with it. 

Now let's get to my favorite thing about Archeon 70: Opening. 

In the introduction, I pointed out to the advantages  top loading  packs possess over the  front opening  packs when backpacking. 

Offering top AND front access, Archeon is even superior to packs with top loading  only .  

Assuming the internal compression straps are in play, you're also given front access to the main compartment by unzipping dual front zips.

Secondary activity: Overnight camping 

I'd recommend you the  Atmos AG 65  (women's counterpart is  Aura AG 65 ) or  Aether AG 70  (women's counterpart is  Ariel AG 65 ).

You dont seem to understand the reason for the Ozone Duplex.

Let me explain to you: It is the correct size for both carry-on and personal item.

Farpoint 55 is too big. If it wouldnt be, all people would buy it – but most buy Farpoint 40 instead.

And about how cumbersome it is when both bags are together, no buyer gives a shit, because they buy it of the sole reason to get their luggage on the plane instead of checking it it.

I will be traveling to Krasnodar sometime during the spring of 2010 but I have a couple of questions. I will be traveling from the US and want to know if I will have to travel via Moscow or if there is a more direct route either from Ukraine, Europe, or even Turkey. I'm assuming that Krasnodar does not have an international airport.

It does not have an international airport. You will have to make a transfer in Moscow.

I was afraid of that, but thank you for the information. It will be a long trip.

By the way - there 3 international airports in Krasnodar Krai. Krasnodar (Pashkovsky), Sochi (Adler) and Anapa.
