Korean SIM Cards For Tourists: Summary

Tourists using a Korean SIM card in Korea

This detailed article to buying a Korean SIM card for tourists at Incheon Airport will cover lots of topics, including Korean mobile operators , Korean SIM card options , how to buy a SIM card , Korean eSIM cards , and alternatives to SIM cards , such as WiFi and roaming. There are also lots of my own tips.

If you don’t want to read through everything, this section of the article provides a short summary of why you should buy a tourist SIM card at Incheon Airport , how much tourist SIM cards cost, and whether you should book online or buy on arrival. I hope this summary helps you with your Korea trip planning.

Why Purchase A Korean SIM Card At Incheon Airport?

As a tourist traveling to South Korea, purchasing a SIM card at Incheon Airport can be a convenient and efficient way to ensure you stay connected during your trip. Most travellers to Korea arrive at Incheon Airport and having a SIM card from the moment you arrive can be really useful.

Here are some reasons why you might want to buy a SIM or eSIM card at Incheon Airport:

  • Convenience : Upon arrival at Incheon Airport, you’ll find several telecom providers offering SIM cards with a variety of plans. This means you can start your trip with a working phone, without the need to search for a store in the city.
  • Tourist Friendly : Incheon Airport sells tourist SIM cards , which are designed for travellers to Korea and are valid from 1 to 90 days. These are easier to get than regular Korean SIM cards.
  • Language Issues : Staff at Incheon Airport are used to dealing with customers in English and a range of other languages. It’ll be much easier to ask questions and solve issues at the airport.
  • Variety of Plans : Whether you need a data-only plan or one that includes voice calls and text messages, you’re likely to find a plan that suits your needs. All providers offer unlimited data plans, which can be very useful if you plan to use map or translation apps extensively.
  • Ease of Use : Once you purchase a tourist SIM card, all you need to do is insert it into your phone, and you’re good to go. Most providers will offer assistance if you’re unsure how to install the SIM card. If you want an eSIM, the staff can also show you how to set up that.

However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:

  • Phone Compatibility : Your phone needs to be unlocked in order to use a Korean SIM card. If your phone is locked to a specific carrier, you won’t be able to use the SIM card. It’s best to check your phone and provider before travelling to Korea.
  • Cost : While buying a SIM card at the airport is convenient, it might not always be the most cost-effective option. It’s worth doing some research beforehand to compare prices and plans. You can often save money by ordering online and collecting at the airport.
  • Duration of Stay : If you’re only staying for a few days, it might be more economical to use international roaming or rely on Wi-Fi hotspots or routers instead of buying a SIM card.
  • Number of Travellers : SIM cards only allow one phone or tablet to connect to the internet, but if you’re travelling in a group, that means getting one for each person. A portable WiFi router might be more convenient in Korea for large groups vs. separate SIM cards.

These issues, and more, will be discussed in this article. Overall, there are many benefits of getting a SIM card or some other method of connecting to the internet. Planning ahead and being prepared, such as by reading this article, will help you get the best deal and avoid any headaches on arrival.

How Much Does A Korean SIM Card Or eSIM Cost?

Here’s a cost comparison of prepaid Korean SIM cards with unlimited data at Incheon Airport and from Klook , one of the best tour operators in Korea, as well as eSIM prices. The highlighted options are the best prices available for each period from any of the three major mobile operators in Korea.

As you can see from the information below, prepaid data SIM cards for 7 and 15 days are only available at Incheon Airport and can’t be purchased online. Prepaid data SIM cards and eSIMs are typically cheaper when bought online, but you might also consider getting a pocket WiFi router , too.

Please note : The cost of SIM cards and eSIM cards from the 3 major Korean mobile operators at Incheon Airport are the same. Both physical SIM cards and eSIM cards at Incheon Airport come with the same network and security guarantees, so you can use either one when visiting Korea.

All of the information regarding SIM card prices is based on research conducted at Incheon Airport and from online resources, including Klook and others. I will endeavour to keep prices updated so that you can make the right decision regarding the best Korean SIM card for you.

These prices are based on services offered by the 3 major mobile operators in Korea. There may be cheaper SIM card options available through smaller Korean mobile operators, but I can’t guarantee their quality and service. Therefore, I won’t discuss them in this article.

Should I Book Online Or Buy At Incheon Airport?

The simplest way to get a tourist SIM card in Korea is to buy one when you arrive at Incheon Airport. There are 24 hour desks run by all three major mobile operators in Korea who sell Korean SIM cards at similar prices and all with unlimited data as a standard option. ESIMs are available, too.

However, there are advantages to booking a SIM card online and collecting it at Incheon Airport from the same booths that sell tourist SIM cards. Booking online is usually cheaper, as SIM card resellers offer an incentive to book through them. Furthermore, you can research about which SIM you need.

Researching before you travel, such as by reading this article, will help you know which companies offer the best service, where to get the best price, which SIM card has the best reputation, and if there are any alternatives available. You might also want to get a global eSIM if you plan to travel more.

Therefore, I recommend researching online first, then booking online to save money and to choose the best tourist SIM card that’s right for you. For people who want to travel to other countries after Korea, such as Japan or Taiwan, I recommend looking into global eSIMs as these may save you more.

If you do want to book a Korean sim card online, here are some of the sites I recommend. You can order online and collect the sim card at Incheon Airport.

  • Get Your Guide

For those who want an eSIM instead, you can get those at Incheon Airport, or book local, roaming, and global eSIMs from these sites:

  • Airola eSIMs
  • Ubigi eSIMs
  • Nomad eSIMs
  • Klook eSIMs

Whatever you choose, I’m sure you’ll be able to easily and conveniently connect to the internet in South Korea. Incheon Airport is a great place to get a SIM card or portable WiFi router and the helpful and friendly staff can assist you in many different languages.

Planning to visit Korea? These travel essentials will help you plan your trip, get the best deals, and save you time and money before and during your Korean adventure.

Visas & K-ETA: Some travellers to Korea need a Tourist Visa , but most can travel with a Korean Electronic Travel Authorisation (K-ETA). Currently 22 Countries don’t need either one.

How To Stay Connected : Pre-order a Korean Sim Card or a WiFi Router to collect on-arrival at Incheon Airport (desks open 24-hours). Alternatively, download a Korean eSIM for you travels.

Where To Stay : For Seoul, I recommend Myeongdong (convenient), Hongdae (cool culture) or Gangnam (shopping). For Busan, Haeundae (Beach) or Seomyeon (Downtown).

Incheon Airport To Seoul : Take the Airport Express (AREX) to Seoul Station or a Limo Bus across Seoul. Book an Incheon Airport Private Transfer and relax to or from the airport.

Korean Tour Operators : Tour companies that have a big presence in Korea include Klook , Trazy , Viator , and Get Your Guide . These sites offer discounted entry tickets for top attractions.

Seoul City Passes : Visit Seoul’s top attractions for free with a Discover Seoul Pass or Go City Seoul Pass . These passes are great for families and couples visiting Seoul – you can save lots.

How To Get Around : For public transport, grab a T-Money Card . Save money on Korea’s high speed trains with a Korea Rail Pass . To see more of Korea, there are many rental car options from Klook , EconomyBookings , and RentalCars .

Travel Money : Use money exchanges near Myeongdong and Hongdae subway stations for the best exchange rates. Order a Wise Card or WOWPASS to pay by card across Korea.

Flights To Korea : I use flight comparison sites such as Expedia and Skyscanner to find the best flights to Korea from any country. Air Asia is a good option for budget flights from Asia.

Travel Insurance : It is important to insure your trips to protect yourself against the unexpected. World Nomad is a specialized travel insurance provider with options for different coverage for travellers from around the world. You can also purchase cover when you are already travelling.

How To Learn Korean : The language course from 90 Day Korean or Korean Class 101 both have well-structured lessons and lots of useful resources to help you learn Korean.

Korean Tourist SIM Card Providers

South Korean Mobile Phone Choices

In South Korea, there are three major mobile operators that provide SIM cards for tourists: KT , SK Telecom , and LG U+ . These major mobile operators essentially offer the same service and have great coverage across the country. They also have similar plans with similar prices for tourists.

  • KT (Olleh): Korea Telecom (KT) is one of the largest network companies in South Korea. They offer a variety of prepaid SIM cards that can be pre-ordered and picked up at the airport. They also offer a Voice & Text SIM card which can be topped up with credits for voice calls.
  • SK Telecom: SK Telecom is ideal for customers with small usage amounts and short-term visitors to Korea. Their rate plans include basic charge, voice service fee, VAT, and subscription fee. Pre-paid additional services are charged on a daily basis.
  • LG U+: LG U+ offers physical SIM cards and eSIMs for tourists. They provide unlimited data and phone calls, Wi-Fi and Phone rental services. Their eSIM can be used on any device that supports eSIM technology. LG U+ offers extensive network coverage across South Korea.

Mobile phone connections in Korea are always good (especially compared to my home country of England!). Whichever phone provider you choose, you’ll experience great connectivity and coverage wherever you are in Korea. That’s true even when hiking in Korea’s national parks!

If you want to know what the SK Telecom’s SIM card is like, check out my review of the SK 4G SIM card that you can buy at Incheon Airport. I talk about the SIM price, coverage, service, reliability and other factors that are all really important when considering which SIM card to buy in Korea.

Personally, I use KT mobile services in Korea and haven’t had problems with connecting to the internet or making calls. According to the 2022 mobile experience awards , SK Telecom was the clear winner with the best overall experience, 5G experience, and consistency, as shown in the image below.

Korean SIM Cards For Tourists In 2024

Tourists Using Korean SIM Card In Seoul

The type of SIM card plan you get as a tourist in Korea depends on what you want to use your phone for. As with any SIM card plan, there are a number of options you should consider when making your choice, such as if you get calls with data or just data, and whether you have unlimited usage or not.

Prepaid Korean SIM Cards With Unlimited Data

A SIM card with unlimited data is the standard option for tourists travelling to Korea and is an easy and convenient SIM card option that will allow you to connect to the internet whenever you like and for as long as you like. These SIM cards will allow you to receive calls for free, but you can’t make calls.

Prepaid Korean SIM cards with unlimited data are priced per day, with various fixed-period SIM card options available. Not all companies provide sims for the same number of days, but the prices for data-only SIM card plans for 30 days or fewer are the same for all phone companies in Korea.

These are the SIM & eSIM card prices you’ll pay if you buy them at Incheon Airport:

60 Days: ₩107,200

90 Days: ₩143,000

40 Days: ₩99,000

60 Days: ₩143,000

To show that these are the correct prices (at time of publishing this article), here are the pictures I took from Incheon Airport of the tourist SIM and eSIM prices by the 3 major mobile operators.

KT Olleh SIM card prices

Prepaid Korean SIM Cards With Data, Calls & Texts

When you purchase a Korean SIM card with data from Incheon Airport or online, there is an option to add-on the ability to make outgoing calls and to send text messages. Unlimited data SIMs typically only allow incoming calls and text messages, but for a small fee you can add calls and texts.

To request the ability to make calls and to send texts with your Korean prepaid SIM card, you should top-up the SIM card. Please note : You must state that you want to get calls and text messages when you collect and install your sim card at Incheon Airport.

The cost to add-on calls and texts to your SIM card package for all mobile operators is as follows:

  • ₩5,500 for 20 minutes of calls (some operators have a minimum add-on of ₩11,000)

Personally, I think most tourists to Korea won’t need call services and there are lots of ways to make calls without this add-on. You can download apps such as Kakao Talk , Messenger, What’s App, and other messaging services that allow you to talk using data instead. It’s much cheaper.

The main benefit of a Korean SIM card with calls is to use it to call Korean phone numbers, which could be useful to book meals out, reserve tickets, and use certain Korean apps. However, I believe the majority of tourists to Korea will be able to travel perfectly fine without this feature.

90 Day Korean SIM Card Plans

If you plan to stay in Korea for longer than a week or two, such as to study, visit friends or family, or travel across the country, then a 60 or 90 day Korean SIM card plan could be a good option for you. Purchasing a 60 or 90 day SIM card is cheaper and easier than buying multiple 30 day SIM card plans.

How To Extend Tourist SIM Plans

For those travellers to Korea who originally purchased a 30 day SIM card plan from one of the major mobile operators, but want to use these services for longer, it’s possible to extend tourist SIM plans beyond the original 30 days. Tourist SIMs can be used for a maximum of 90 days in total.

Extending a tourist SIM card is simple and can be done online through the relevant mobile operator’s website. All you need to do is enter your phone number and agree to pay for an extra 30 days of service. This renewal fee is typically cheaper than the cost of the original plan, up to 50% cheaper .

Please note : You must extend your SIM plan before your current plan has expired, otherwise you’ll need to sign up for a new SIM card and won’t get any discounts for extending. Monthly extensions aren’t available on tourist SIM cards that were originally valid for under 30 days.

How To Buy A Tourist SIM Card At Incheon Airport

People buying a SIM card at Incheon Airport

Buying a tourist SIM card at Incheon Airport is really easy. Whether you preordered a SIM card before you travelled, or you want to buy one when you arrive, the process is more or less the same. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to purchase a tourist SIM card at Incheon Airport:

1. Arrival at Incheon Airport : Once you arrive at Incheon Airport, proceed to the arrival hall after clearing immigration and collecting your luggage. This is the same process for either terminal.

2. Locate SIM Card Booths : Look for the SIM card booths of the three major Korean mobile operators: SK Telecom , KT , and LG U+ . These booths are located in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. You might need to take a waiting ticket if it’s busy when you arrive.

3. Choose a Plan : Review the different SIM card options available, including the length of the prepaid SIM contract and cost. All of the SIM card plans at Incheon Airport come with unlimited data allowance. If you’ve preordered a SIM card online, you can collect it at the relevant booth here, too.

4. Phone Compatibility : Before purchasing a SIM card, make sure your phone is completely unlocked with your mobile provider. This is especially important if your phone is from The United States, Canada, Japan, or The Philippines. Korean tourist SIM cards are Normal, Nano, and Micro sized.

5. Purchase : Once you’ve decided on a plan that suits your needs, you can purchase the SIM card at the booth. Some operators also offer the option to include a T-money Transportation Card , which is a public transportation card that you can charge and use to take subways and buses in Korea.

If you purchased a SIM card online before travelling to Korea, such as those from Klook, you will need to show your voucher to the staff at the relevant booth to collect your reserved SIM card. You will also need to show your passport in both situations to prove your identity and register the SIM.

SK Telecom SIM card booth at Incheon Airport

6 . Installation : After purchasing, you can ask the staff at the booth to help you install the SIM card in your phone. There is also a small table near the SIM card booth where you can eject your current SIM card using a small metal tool to release it from your phone.

7 . Activation : Once the SIM card is installed, follow the instructions provided to activate it. You should now be able to use your phone to make calls and access the internet in Korea. If your phone doesn’t connect to the internet at first, try turning the power on and off and checking again.

Incheon Airport SIM Card Booth Opening Hours

There will be at least 1 SIM card booth at Incheon Airport for each Korean mobile operator that is open 24 hours a day from Monday to Sunday. No matter what time you arrive at Incheon Airport, you will be able to collect or purchase your SIM card and start using it straight away.

The SIM card booths near gate 10 on the 1st floor Arrivals Hall of Incheon Airport are open 24 hours. This is for KT, SK Telecom, and LG U+. Other booths are available from 6am until 10pm daily.

How To Preorder A Korean SIM Card Online

Preordering a Korean SIM card online through agencies such as Klook can not only save you money vs. SIM card prices at Incheon Airport, you can also get some added extras included, too. Here’s a step-by-step guide about how to purchase a tourist SIM card online for South Korea:

1. Choose a Provider : There are several websites where you can purchase a SIM card for South Korea, such as Klook, Get Your Guide, Trazy, and KK Day. I’ll provide more details about these later.

2. Select a Plan : Search for ‘Korean SIM card’ (or use my direct links) on your chosen site and you’ll see various options available. These may include unlimited data plans, plans with limited data, and plans that also include voice calls and text messages. Choose the one that best suits your needs.

3. Enter Your Details : After selecting a plan, you’ll need to provide some information. This includes your full name, passport number, and arrival date, as well as the location you want to collect the SIM card. Don’t forget, you’ll need your passport to collect and activate the SIM card when you arrive.

4. Make a Payment : Once you’ve entered all the necessary information, proceed to the payment section. Most websites accept international credit cards and PayPal and some, such as Klook, might offer reward points or discounts for using their services.

5. Confirmation : After payment, you’ll receive a confirmation email or voucher with details about your purchase. This email will also include instructions on where and how to pick up your SIM card at Incheon Airport. Show this voucher or email when you arrive to collect your SIM card.

6. Pick Up Your SIM Card : Upon arrival at Incheon Airport, head to the pick-up location mentioned in your confirmation email. Don’t forget to bring your passport and confirmation email for verification.

Remember, before you preorder a SIM card, it’s important to check if your phone is unlocked and compatible with the Korean network before purchasing a SIM card. You can find out more about that in the ‘ What to check before you buy a SIM card ‘ section later in this article.

Where To Preorder Korean SIM Cards Online

There are lots of websites that offer discounted SIM cards to use in Korea and it can be hard to know which ones to trust and which have the best prices. To make it easier to choose the right SIM card for you, here are 4 of the best SIM card resellers that I recommend when travelling to Korea:

Klook SIM Cards

Klook is one of the best tour operators in Korea and has a reputation for offering a wide selection of services, including tourist SIM cards and WiFi rental. Their easy-to-use website and booking system makes it fast and simple to preorder your SIM card for South Korea. You can reserve your must-do tours at the same time, too.

Klook Logo

Get Your Guide SIM Cards

Get Your Guide are arguably one of the biggest and best global tour operators that has a significant presence in Korea. They offer a combined SIM and T-Money Card package that’s really useful for first time travellers to South Korea. If you’ve booked through Get Your Guide when travelling to other countries, you know you can trust their services.

KKDay SIM Cards

KKDay is a growing Asia-based tour operator that offers a range of SIM card options for travellers to Korea, including one SIM card plan with international delivery. If you want to try a Korean SIM card not from one of the 3 major Korean mobile operators, you can get them from KKDay. They’re usually cheaper than the SIM cards you’ll find at Incheon Airport.

KKDay Logo

Trazy SIM Cards

Trazy is a Korea-based travel booking site with lots of unique activities and experiences that you won’t find on other sites. There are lots of great SIM card options on Trazy, as well as packages that include transportation cards, that can be collected at Incheon Airport or in other parts of Seoul. You can also book SIM cards with voice and SMS credits included.

Preordering SIM Cards Vs. Buying At Incheon Airport

Whether you preorder a SIM card online or buy one at Incheon Airport, the service you receive from the 3 major Korean mobile operators will be the same. The main difference between these options is price, with preordering about 10% cheaper vs. tourist SIM card prices at Incheon Airport.

Here’s a quick overview of the main benefits of both processes, followed up by a comparison between the two options so you can see why you might want to consider preordering a Korean tourist SIM card when you travel to Korea instead of getting it at Incheon Airport.

Preordering Online : Preordering a SIM card online allows you to compare different plans and prices at your own pace, matching them to your own needs. You can also check out reviews from other customers and see what their experience was like, which will help to reassure you about your choice.

Once you’ve made a decision, you can make a purchase from the comfort of your home and in your own currency. Upon arrival in Korea, simply pick up your SIM card at the designated counter at Incheon Airport. This saves you time and potentially money, as online platforms often offer discounts.

Buying at Incheon Airport : Purchasing a SIM card directly at Incheon Airport is straightforward and convenient, especially if you didn’t have time to preorder online. There are several counters selling SIM cards, each offering different plans. You can ask the staff any questions and they will help you activate the SIM card on the spot. However, prices at Incheon airport are higher compared to online.

Here’s a comparison table to summarise the differences between preordering a SIM card and buying one at Incheon Airport when you arrive:

Korean ESIM Cards At Incheon Airport

South Korean eSIM Cards

A popular alternative to physical SIM cards for travellers to Korea is an eSIM. An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a relatively new technology that has the same benefits of a physical SIM, without needing one. Instead of inserting a physical SIM card, you download a “software SIM” from a network provider.

For tourists traveling to South Korea, using an eSIM can be a convenient option as you don’t need to remove (and risk losing) your home country’s SIM card. Depending on your eSIM, you can also use the service in other countries without the need for another SIM card.

The potential benefits of using an eSIM in Korea include:

  • Convenience : No need to physically swap SIM cards when you travel.
  • Cost : Some eSIMs offer cheaper rates than regular SIM cards, however, be sure to check the conditions, data limits, and reviews when booking a low-cost eSIM. Some plans allow you to pay only for the data you use, which could be cheaper than unlimited data plans.
  • Environmentally Friendly : Less plastic waste is produced without physical SIM cards.
  • Future Travel : Some eSIMs provide roaming services, so you can use the eSIM in other countries, which can save money when visiting multiple countries.

However, there are some potential disadvantages of eSIMs that you should consider:

  • Compatibility : Not all devices support eSIM yet.
  • Limited Data Allowance : Some eSIMs may throttle data speeds after a certain amount of data has been used. Be sure to check the daily allowance.
  • Swapping Providers : If you frequently switch between carriers, using an eSIM can be more complex than simply swapping physical SIM cards.
  • Activation : You may need to activate the eSIM as soon as it’s installed, which means you’ll either need to download and install it before you travel, or wait until you land at Incheon Airport.

Overall, there are many benefits to eSIMs and tech-savvy travellers will be fine using these alternatives to physical SIM cards. However, I recommend carefully checking the terms and conditions of eSIM plans to make sure you’re getting a good deal and can use an eSIM with your phone.

How To Use eSIMS In Korea

Using an eSIM in Korea isn’t really any different from using a physical SIM card, except for the installation. Once the eSIM is installed, you should be ready to browse the web and receive phone calls and texts. Here’s a basic overview of how to use an eSIM when you travel to Korea:

1. Check Device Compatibility : Ensure your device supports eSIM. Many newer smartphones and tablets have this feature, particularly those made after 2020. Check this list of eSIM compatible devices to see if your phone can accept an eSIM or not.

2. Choose a Provider : Search for providers in Korea that offer eSIM services. All 3 major mobile operators offer eSIM cards online and at Incheon Airport. Some international providers also offer global eSIM plans which can be used in other countries, too.

3. Purchase and Download : Once you’ve chosen a plan, you can purchase it online and download the eSIM right onto your device. However, check the conditions of your eSIM as it may be activated the moment it’s installed. Some eSIM providers might also require you to download an app.

4. Activation : Follow the provider’s instructions to activate your eSIM. This usually involves scanning a QR code or entering a confirmation code. Be sure to check the instructions carefully.

Each eSIM company will have their own rules and instructions for using an eSIM in Korea. I recommend thoroughly checking the instructions provided by your chosen provider before signing up

Physical SIM Cards Vs. ESIMs For Korea

Whether you choose to use a physical SIM card or eSIM card when you travel to Korea is really down to your own personal preference. The price for both physical SIM cards and eSIM cards from Korean mobile operators at Incheon Airport is the same and the data plan for both is unlimited.

However, there are more options for eSIM cards than just those offered by Korea’s mobile operators. Global eSIMs allow you to route through the phone networks of other countries, such as from Hong Kong, to access the internet in Korea. These typically won’t give you a phone number, though.

Global eSIMs can be cheaper to use in Korea than local (Korean) eSIMs and they can be used in other countries too. This can be really useful if you plan to travel to multiple countries and only want to get one phone plan. Again, check eSIM card reviews to find out which plans are the best for you.

Here’s a comparison between physical SIM cards and eSIM cards for travellers to Korea:

Where To Buy Tourist ESIMs For Korea

The 3 major Korean mobile operations all offer eSIMs at Incheon Airport and the price for physical SIM cards and eSIM cards are the same. They offer unlimited data eSIMs for fixed periods that have the same coverage and reliability as a physical SIM card. The price for these eSIMs are as follows:

3 Days: ₩15,700

5 Days: ₩23,800

10 Days: ₩33,300

20 Days: ₩53,500

30 Days: ₩62,300

It is also possible to buy Korean and global eSIMs online before you travel to Korea. As with physical SIM cards, buying an eSIM online is often cheaper than buying it at Incheon Airport and you gain the benefits discussed previously, which you can see in the drop down box below:

To save you time searching for the best Korean eSIMs from the many online companies offering local and global eSIMs, here are 4 companies that I recommend for reliable network connections, good prices, strong customer reviews, and availability in Korea and abroad.

Airalo ESIM

Airalo is the world’s first eSIM store that solves the pain of high roaming bills by giving you access to 200+ eSIMs (digital SIM cards) globally at affordable prices. The Airalo Korean eSIM operates through the LG U+ network and is available in 10 or 30 day packages. They also offer Global eSIMs that can be used in 130 countries.

Ubigi offers eSIMs that you can use in your phone, tablet, laptop, and even connected cars. Simply get an Ubigi eSIM plan for mobile data and save money. Prices start at $5 for a 7-day eSIM that gives you up to 1GB of data. Perfect for people who don’t plan to use their phone a lot but still want to stay connected. Local, regional, and global eSIMs available with various levels of data.

The Nomad eSIM is designed for people who like to travel and stay connected. You can travel to over 165 countries with one Nomad eSIM and pay almost local rates in each. For travellers to Korea, there is a 5GB / 10GB data plan for 30 days which starts at $12 / $20 and gives you access to either KT or SK Telecom’s local mobile network. This eSIM would be ideal for tourists who want to use their phone a lot.

As mentioned, Klook is one of the best tour operators in Korea and have a reputation for offering a wide selection of services, including tourist eSIM cards. Their easy-to-use website and booking system makes it fast and simple to preorder your eSIM card for South Korea. They offer eSIMs from local mobile operators, as well as from other providers.

Alternatives To Buying A Korean SIM Card

There are several alternatives to buying a tourist SIM card when you visit Korea, including WiFi routers that connect to the same networks, free WiFi access from local access points, and using your home phone plan in roaming mode. Here’s a brief overview of each of those options.

Portable WiFi Routers

Renting a portable WiFi router from Incheon Airport is one of the most popular alternatives to buying a Korean tourist SIM card for several reasons.

First, portable WiFi routers can be used by multiple devices, which means families only need one router instead of multiple SIMs.

Also, a router has a lower cost for short-term travellers (under 2 weeks) with WiFi routers starting at ₩3,200 per day.

Furthermore, you can use routers for longer than planned and pay the excess when you return it at Incheon Airport.

Portable WiFi routers have near-perfect coverage across Korea and use the same secure networks as local SIM cards.

Pocket WiFi Router

To rent a portable WiFi router from Incheon Airport, you will need to reserve and pay using a credit card with the following requirements:

  • The card must have more than 3 months validity remaining.
  • You can only use Visa or Mastercard.
  • You must use the same card to reserve and collect the WiFi router.
  • The card must be in the same name as the person booking and collecting.
  • Debit cards are not accepted.

The credit card guarantees that you’ll return the WiFi router (or else you’ll be charged for the device) and allows you to extend the amount of time you use the router without having to renew your original contract. Simply pay the excess when you leave from Incheon Airport.

Free WiFi In Seoul & Korea

Korea, especially in cities like Seoul and Busan, has great public WiFi that is available for free and you can definitely travel Korea using only free WiFi. Most cafes, restaurants, public transport, and public places offer free WiFi that’s easy to connect to and has high-speed internet access. Subway stations, buses, and train stations all offer free WiFi, which makes them practical places to plan your day’s travelling and check your location. Hotels also offer free WiFi.

Home Mobile Service Provider

Many mobile operators offer roaming services that allow you to use your own phone plan overseas, such as in Korea. This may be a simpler and still cost-effective way of using data and making calls while you’re abroad, especially if you don’t want to deal with installing a new SIM card when travelling. The price and services will depend on your phone service provider, so you’ll need to contact them to see if it’s a good option for you.

Best Option For Staying Connected In Korea

What’s the best way to stay connected in South Korea? There are several options to get connected when you visit Korea, including SIM cards (physical and eSIM), WiFi routers, free WiFi, and roaming services from your home mobile operator. Each have their own benefits and disadvantages.

Based on my experience travelling in Korea and using SIM cards, WiFi routers, and free WiFi to connect the internet, I recommend a combination of SIM card and free WiFi . Having internet access while you walk around Seoul and other places is extremely useful, especially to check directions.

However, you’re not likely to use large amounts of data while you’re looking around palaces or seeing the sights like the Seoul Sky Observatory. The times when you’re likely to use lots of data are often in places where you can access free WiFi, such as in your hotel, in a cafe, or on a bus or train journey.

Therefore, I recommend a SIM or eSIM card that has enough data for apps like Naver Maps or Kakao Taxi , but not more than you need as you can use free WiFi to stream videos, download books, etc. When I travel to the UK, I get a SIM card with a couple of GB of data and use free WiFi for streaming.

This 2GB Global eSIM from Airola is only $17 and lasts for 15 days, covering 130 countries (including Japan), so you can use it even if you have a layover in another country or plan to visit other countries. It has 2GB of data, which is usually enough if you use free WiFi for big data demands.

What To Check Before Buying A SIM Card

Whether you plan to buy a Korean SIM card, eSIM card, or a global eSIM card, you should check if your phone is compatible or not. Korean tourist SIM cards work on the 4G network, so you should check your phone is capable of handling 4G, which most phones made in the last 5 years will do.

Before purchasing a Korean SIM card or eSIM card, there are several things you should check:

  • Phone Compatibility : Ensure your phone is compatible with the SIM or eSIM. For eSIMs, this typically means having a latest-generation phone.
  • Sim Card Size : Korean tourist SIM cards are available in Normal, Nano, and Micro sizes, which should fit most modern phones. Check your phone if you’re not sure of your SIM card size.
  • Locked phones : Some operators lock phones so they only work with their own network, meaning you can’t add a Korean SIM. However, this is less common these days and was banned in the UK in 2021. If you’re not sure if your phone is locked, contact your operator.
  • Data Speed : Some operators advertise unlimited 4G internet access, but the speed may drop to 128kbps after a certain amount of data is used. Make sure to check the details of the data plan.
  • Duration of Stay : The duration of your stay in Korea will determine the best option for you. There are options available from 1 and 90 days. If you buy a plan for fewer days than you need, it’s not possible to extend the SIM contract, except for plans that are 30 days or more.
  • Number of Devices : If you’re traveling in a group and need to connect multiple devices to the internet, a pocket WiFi might be a better option. Portable WiFi is often cheaper for groups vs. buying multiple SIM cards, but the downside is that everyone will need to be in the same area.
  • Activation Process : For eSIMs, you’ll typically receive an activation QR code via email. You’ll need to scan this code and follow the on-screen instructions to activate the eSIM.

If you plan to use an eSIM card in Korea, you will need a more modern phone, typically something made since 2020, such as a Samsung Galaxy S20 or iPhone 11 or newer versions of these devices. Some phones with dual SIMs, such as the Chinese iPhone Max, can’t accept eSIMs.

To check if your phone can accept eSIM cards or not, this article about how to check if you phone supports eSIM lists all the models that accept eSIMs. It also details how to install an eSIM in different situations. Sites selling eSIMs, such as Klook, will also include detailed instructions.

Travel Tips For Visiting South Korea

Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul

This site has lots of useful practical, informative, and inspiring articles that I hope will help you discover the best that Korea has to offer. If you’re planning a trip to South Korea, here are a few of my personal tips to help you travel safely and easily around the Land of Morning Calm.

  • Download useful apps to help you travel in Korea, including Naver Map (more reliable than Google Maps), Kakao Taxi (Korea’s Uber), Seoul Subway , Papago (Korean translation), Agoda (for hotel bookings) and Klook (for tours).
  • Get a transportation card : Save money on buses and subways in Korea with a transportation card, such as a T-Money card or Korea Tour Card . Korean payment cards, such as WOWPASS , come with T-Money functions and some of the SIM cards mentioned include a T-Money card.
  • Don’t exchange money at the airport : Exchanging money at Incheon Airport is one of the most expensive ways to get holiday money. There are much better ways to spend in Korea, such as by using a WISE travel money card or WOWPASS, a local debit card for tourists.
  • Check the weather : Spring and autumn are lovely times to visit Korea, while summer (hot and wet) and winter (cold and dry) can be challenging. Read about Korea’s seasons to help you figure out the best time to visit Korea, as well as what to see, do, eat, and experience.
  • Book ahead : This is especially true if you’re travelling in cherry blossom season or autumn foliage season , when tours, festivals, and hotels are often sold out in advance. It’s cheaper to book ahead, too, especially for flights to Korea and for hotels in Seoul and other cities.
  • Eat local food : If you’re travelling all the way to Korea, you should definitely not miss the chance to try authentic Korean dishes such as samgyeopsal , kimchi jjigae , or tteokbokki . Discover the best Korean dishes and street foods in my articles about Korean food and drinks .

Above all, the best advice I can give you about travelling to Korea is to be open minded and try as much as you can, even if it looks a bit unusual or scary. There are a lot of unique experiences awaiting you in Korea, some you may miss out on if you don’t take a few chances. Travel safe and travel well.

Korean SIM Cards For Tourists FAQs

Finally, here are a few FAQs about buying a Korean sim card for tourists at Incheon Airport, in case the above information didn’t cover enough for you. If you have any other questions you’d like to ask, feel free to leave a comment.

Can I buy a Korean SIM card at Incheon Airport?

Travellers to Korea can buy a local SIM card or eSIM card at Incheon Airport in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. There are 24 hour booths run by the 3 major mobile operators in Korea and they all offer SIM and eSIM card plans with unlimited data for tourists with plans between 1 and 90 days in length.

Are Korean SIM cards expensive?

What is the best Korean SIM card for tourists?

The best Korean SIM card for tourists is the SK Telecom 4G SIM card as this mobile operator ranked highest overall in 2022 for cellular services in Korea. Do I need to preorder a Korean SIM card?

It is not necessary to preorder a SIM card when you travel to Korea, however, buying a SIM card online is often cheaper, allows you to check reviews, and can be paid for in your home currency. Preordered Korean SIM cards can be collected at the same booths in Incheon Airport that sell tourist SIM cards.

As technology advances, travelling abroad has become more accessible and convenient using eSIMs. This is especially true for South Korea, where the best eSIM for visitors is undoubtedly Airalo.

In this blog post, we’ll explore eSIMs, why they benefit travellers in South Korea, and how to purchase an eSIM South Korea.

Table of Contents

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is embedded within a device. It works like a physical SIM card, allowing users to connect to multiple cellular networks and access data, calls, and SMS services.

Unlike a physical SIM card, an eSIM does not require swapping out or inserting a new one. Instead, the eSIM is downloaded and activated on your phone or device.

Why is the eSIM card South Korea so convenient?

When travelling to South Korea, visitors often face the issue of purchasing a local SIM card to stay connected to cellular networks. However, this process can be time-consuming, as it requires finding a reliable seller, purchasing the SIM card, registering the SIM in your name, and activating the SIM card.

With an eSIM for South Korea, you don’t need to do any of the above.

Instead, visitors can purchase and activate an eSIM on their device without visiting a physical store or navigating the language barrier.

Additionally, Airalo eSIMs for South Korea provide unlimited data for two of the most popular plans, ensuring that travellers have constant access to the internet throughout their trip.

What is the best eSIM in Korea?

Airalo currently offers 2 x Data Packs for South Korea eSIM . These plans provide unlimited data!

In addition, both plans are very affordable, especially when you consider there is no cap on data usage for them.

These eSIMs for South Korea offer visitors fast and reliable internet access throughout their stay in Korea.

Choose from 2 x eSIM Data Packs for South Korea

  • $32 – 10 Days Data Pack – UNLIMITED Data
  • $62 – 30 Days Data Pack – UNLIMITED Data

These two plans offer unlimited data, allowing visitors to stay connected without worrying about running out of data.

The 10-day data package is priced at $32 and valid for 10 days from the activation date.

The 30-day plan is priced at $62 and is valid for 30 days from the activation date.

From experience, the South Korea eSIM has an excellent connection all over South Korea. Therefore, you will have access to fast and reliable internet throughout your stay in the country.

Travelling to a country with a different currency? Avoid ATM transaction fees and pay in local currency with a Wise Card . We love this card; it has saved us so much in fees.

How to Buy and Download eSIM South Korea

Buying an eSIM in South Korea is a straightforward process. Whether you need a Korea SIM card 30 days validity or one that covers you for a shorter duration, there are a few great options.

Important:  Your device must be compatible with eSIM. Please  check this list to see if your device supports eSIM  before purchasing an eSIM for South Korea.

Then, you can purchase an eSIM online through the Airalo website.

Download  the Airalo app , and purchase a data package.

You can choose the 10 Days Data Pack OR 30 Days Data Pack for Korea if you need unlimited data.

Follow the steps to activate the eSIM for Korea just before you arrive (remember that the data pack starts from the activation date).

A Few Tips:

  • Before arriving in South Korea, switch from your current mobile provider to the South Korea eSIM provider. Don’t stress; there is a step-by-step guide on how to do it during installation.
  • Once your eSIM card is activated, turn off data for all apps you don’t use, including those that can use a lot of data. Apps such as  Instagram,  YouTube, and Netflix will eat up your data quickly, so wait until you reach your hotel and access the free wifi.
  • And, if you want the freedom to instantly send those videos home to friends and family of you on a DMZ Tour from Seoul  or of you eating and drinking in the alleys of Seoul , the best eSIM for South Korea works like a charm.

And, if you want to extend your stay in South Korea (which is highly likely, cos it’s a fantastic destination), you can buy another eSIM for South Korea on the Airalo app within minutes.

It’s so easy!

Regional eSIM to Travel in Asia

One of the things I love most about Airalo eSIMs for International Travel is that they offer Regional eSIMs and Global eSIMs too.

If you plan to do a region of countries at once (say South East Asia, for example), then your best bet is to buy a regional Asialink eSIM .

It means that if you’re travelling through multiple countries in the same region at once, then the one Regional eSIM (which covers 13 countries) is all you need to stay connected as you travel around.

Check out these 6 x Regional Asialink Data Packs

  • 1GB for 7 days, $5
  • 3GB for 30 days, $13
  • 5GB for 30 days, $20
  • 10GB for 30 days, $37

Dive in and explore our handpicked choices for the leading eSim providers in South Korea!

ESIM Product Comparison

Maya mobile.

If you are looking for a prepaid eSim for South Korea, this eSim provider has great plans and strives to be the best in the market. Yes, I know you will love Maya Mobile as much as I do.

I stumbled upon them only recently and have been adding them to my recommended eSim providers ever since.

What I appreciate about their South Korea eSims for travel is that they all run for 30 days , so no matter how long your trip is, you will be able to use all your data!

Here are their plans in South Korea:

  • 1 GB – $5
  • 3 GB – $11
  • 5 GB – $18
  • 10 GB – $36
  • Unlimited – $69

If you run out of data, you can just renew or top up as you go along on your trip too, which is super convenient.

Additionally, their unlimited data plan is also a great buy too. On top of that, Maya always works with the top mobile networks in each country , rather than skimping and pretending to save you money – but really just giving you a lesser product. In this case, Maya uses KT and SK Telekom on the 4G/LTE network.

Oh, and one last thing, you can use your phone as a hotspot which most eSim providers ban.

  • Unlimited data plan
  • Best mobile networks
  • Hotspot allowed
  • All plans 30 days
  • Not the cheapest unlimited package

Airalo is one of the best international eSim providers, and they usually offer data plans that start at just $4-5. But that’s not the case with their South Korea eSim plans; instead, Airalo offers only unlimited data plans for South Korea, which include:

  • $32 for 10 days
  • $62 for 30 days

Both unlimited data plans give you access to the LG U+ network , which is considered the best network provider in South Korea with 99.5% coverage. You’ll have a stable connection, but it’s important to note that you only get full-speed Internet for the first 3 GB each day, and after that, the speed is reduced to 5 Mbps.

Airalo’s eSim data plans for South Korea are quite pricey, but they’re not significantly more expensive than the local cellular data plans. It’s also worth noting that Airalo also has a 5 GB for 10 days data plan, but it is currently out of stock.

  • Unlimited data plans
  • Top mobile network
  • Not many plans available

If you want a good old unlimited data plan for South Korea, Nomad is by far the best option . Their cellular data packages for Korea start at just $9, which gets unlimited for one day. Nomad is the best option for travelers who are staying in Korea for a short time period, and who have no use for long plans.

Nomad’s prepaid plans for South Korea include:

  • 1 Day – $9
  • 3 Day – $18
  • 5 Day – $24
  • 7 days – $28
  • 10 days – $36

You’ll get Internet access through SK Telecom, but it’s worth noting that they also have options that go through Truphone, which is an international network provider.

Additionally, Nomad makes it easy to purchase more data once you’ve used up the initial allowance, so it’s better to start small and extend the eSim if you end up using all the data.

  • All unlimited plans
  • Lots of length options
  • No long plans

Holafly is usually one of the best providers for travelers who want an unlimited data plan, but that’s sadly not the case for South Korea. They’re actually one of the worst options for this country specifically because they offer only one data plan that includes 8 GB for $47.

The eSIM is valid for 30 days, and it grants you access to SK Telecom and KT networks. However, keep in mind that you can purchase a Korea eSim with unlimited data for a month for just $49 from a local provider.

  • Decent local networks
  • Only one plan

AIS SIM2Fly

Sim2Fly  is one of the most affordable eSim options for South Korea. This provider has two regional plans that provide you with Internet access in South Korea; one is a Global plan and the other one is an Asia plan that works in 34 countries throughout Asia.

The latter plan is significantly cheaper, so a much better Korea tourist eSim as it includes

  • $16 for 6 GB of data – for 8 days
  • 5G LTE in South Korea
  • unlimited 2G access at 128 kbps (after the 6GB runs out)
  • eSim with phone number & texts/SMS

Also, keep in mind that you can easily top-up the eSim after the initial 8 days expire. This is also a Korean eSim with a phone number (a Thai phone number), so you can make calls and send/receive texts .

  • Cheapest eSim per GB
  • Phone & Texts included
  • Easy top up
  • Only 6GB included in the plan

Ubigi is a great option if you’re specifically looking for a 10 GB data plan for South Korea.

Ubigi has two South Korea-only data plans shown below,

Ubigi also includes South Korea in 10 of its regional plans for Asia and Worldwide coverage. These data plans range from $6 for 500 MB you can use for a day, to $78 for an annual plan that includes 2 GB per month.

Their data plans are quite expensive for what they are, plus they’re not even the best solution for a regional eSim for Asia. But they definitely have the best 10 GB plan out of the bunch, so I would recommend Ubigi if you’re looking for precisely that.

  • Good for lots of countries
  • Good for longer stays
  • Not the cheapest

KRSIM  offers two eSim data plans for Korea. Both include unlimited data, and the price depends on the validity period of the eSim you choose. Korea eSim Red is the cheaper of the two plans, starting at around $4.5 for a day of unlimited data on the SK Telecom Network. The prices for this eSim go up to $50 for a month of mobile data.

The other plan is eSim Sky, and that one starts at $20 for 5 days, and goes up to $51 for a month. This plan isn’t available for validity periods of less than 5 days, and there’s a minimal price difference between it and the eSim Red. It’s worth noting that eSim Sky is capped at 3 GB of full-speed internet per day, and after you’ve used that up the speed is reduced to 5 Mbps. This resets every day at midnight, and it’s worth noting that it lets you surf the web on the LG Uplus network.

Both of these plans include a Korean phone number that you can only use to receive texts. You cannot make phone calls or send texts with the phone number, so keep that in mind. Also, you have to give them your passport number in order to purchase one of these eSims.

Benefits of Getting an eSim in South Korea

The main advantage of getting an eSim in South Korea is guaranteed Internet access at your fingertips. South Korea doesn’t have free WiFi hotspots throughout the country, and you can rely on free WiFi only in hotels and cafes/restaurants in Seoul. So, if you want to have Internet access everywhere in the country, you will need either an eSim or pocket WiFi.

Another advantage of eSims in South Korea is that many operators offer unlimited data plans, so you can use the Internet however you want. Watch movies and videos, create a hotspot, and share the connection with your travelers, or just connect your laptop and work – whether you’re in the country for a week or a month, there’s an unlimited data plan for you.

The advantage of an eSim as opposed to a physical sim card is easy installation, no need for sim tray tools, and the fact that you can use it in addition to your existing sim card.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in South Korea

LG U+  is a local network operator in South Korea that offers prepaid eSims for tourists in the country. They range from $20 to $99 and include unlimited data for validity periods of 5 to 60 days.

It’s also possible to purchase SK Telecom unlimited data eSims, but I’m not entirely certain if you can get them directly from the provider. One of the KRSIM eSims is an SK Telecom eSim, but the network operator doesn’t have a webshop that offers this information online.

KT Telecom  also offers prepaid eSims for tourists, and you can choose from data-only eSims and those that include a phone number. Their data plans are reasonably priced, starting at just $5 for a day and going up to $50 for a month of unlimited data. That’s the price with a discount for online purchases; if you try to purchase this eSim at the airport, it will be more expensive.

Devices Compatible with eSim in South Korea

All devices that are eSim compatible will work with a South Korea eSim, except for the Google Pixel devices. For some reason, some Google Pixel phones aren’t compatible with eSims in South Korea, and all the major providers warn you of this before you finalize the purchase.

The devices that are compatible with eSims include all iPhone devices from the XS cell phone onwards and many Android devices released in the past 3-4 years. However, it’s important to note that many Android manufacturers include embedded eSim technology only in their flagship phones, so if you’re using a budget or mid-range Android you should double-check that it supports an embedded sim.

To do this, dial *#06# and press call, which should pull up a list of unique identifying numbers for your device. An EID number indicates that your phone is compatible with eSims, so if you see an EID number, feel free to purchase an eSim for South Korea.

Data Needed When Traveling to South Korea

The amount of data you need for South Korea depends on your data usage habits and the length of your trip. If you’re staying in the country for a short time and you usually don’t use too much mobile data, up to 5 GB should be enough for trips of 10-15 days.

On the other hand, if you’re staying in the country for a while and you consider yourself a heavy user, you’ll be glad to know that most eSim plans for South Korea include unlimited data. This is the best option if you don’t want to take any risks with a limited data package, and instead, want to use the Internet just like you’re used to at home.

Pros of using eSIM over physical SIM cards in South Korea

eSIM technology offers a game-changing solution for travelers exploring South Korea. Here’s why:

1. Instant Activation

Enjoy instant cellular access upon arrival, eliminating the need for lengthy setup processes. As soon as you enter the country, you can activate the eSIM and get going with proper connectivity.

2. Ultimate Flexibility

You can easily switch between mobile networks and plans to suit your changing needs. There is no need to be stuck with a network which does not support your requirements. Simply switch the provider and choose a suitable plan.

3. Unparalleled Convenience

Activate plans directly from your device, eliminating the hassle of physical SIM cards. You don’t have to carry those tiny pins to open your SIM tray or waste time in getting a physical SIM from a local store. Plus, there is no worry of losing your home SIM after it is removed from the phone.

What makes up for a best eSIM plan in South Korea?

When it comes to selecting a plan for your phone for the duration of your trip, it is important to consider certain factors – trip duration, price, data requirements, and others.

Trip Duration

When you are choosing the best eSIM plan for your South Korea trip, take into account the length of your trip. For a longer stay, select a plan that offers longer validity so that you can have uninterrupted high-speed internet access. Shorter trips will work with more cost-effective plans of smaller validity. They may not have unlimited internet, but still can meet your requirements of connectivity.

While everyone wants to be connected all the time these days, if you are traveling on a budget, cost of the plan is also something important to make note. Well, there are several sites that offer affordable South Korea eSIMs like Klook , to meet your budgetary requirements.

Data Requirements

Another important question to consider is how much data do you need during your trip? If you are on a workation or plan to visit different cities, best choose a plan which offers high-speed internet and loads of data. If you are just staying in one city and are there for fun, you could do with lesser amount of data as most hotels in metropolitan cities offer internet access.

Here’s a breakdown of data needs to help you plan your eSIM:

  • 500MB per day:  Ideal for basic tasks like messaging and checking emails.
  • 1GB-2GB per day:  Suitable for moderate social media use, navigation, and occasional video streaming.
  • 3GB per day:  Perfect for heavy social media users, including video streaming and sharing hotspots.
  • Unlimited data:  Enjoy worry-free internet access throughout your trip.

Choose the plan that best suits your travel style and data consumption habits.

The best eSIM plan – Klook

Ensure seamless connectivity throughout your South Korean adventure with a convenient and affordable eSIM from Klook. Enjoy high-speed 4G/5G internet coverage across multiple destinations, starting from just USD$1.45.

You can choose from two different types of eSIM data packages — data in total or data per day.

Data in total is basically the total amount of data you will get upfront. You can control your daily usage while on the trip. Data per day or the daily plan is where you get a fixed amount of data per day. This way, you can be sure that you won’t use up all the data in one day, leaving you with almost no or very little data by the end of your trip.

eSIMs offer a host of advantages over traditional physical SIM cards, making them the ideal choice for travelers. Effortlessly switch between carriers without the hassle of physical SIM card replacements. Store and activate multiple eSIM profiles for added flexibility. Eliminates the risk of losing or damaging your SIM card. Option of purchasing and activating eSIMs directly from your device, saving time and effort.

You can buy South Korea eSIM from any of the travel booking websites like Klook , KKday, and others at an affordable price.

South Korea eSIMs are compatible with most devices, including iPhones, Samsung Galaxy devices, and Pixel phones.

What is eSIM?

Before going right into the list of the best eSIM services, some of you might be thinking “What is eSIM?” and that would be a fair thing to ask since this is a relatively new thing that’s becoming more talked about.

eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card technology integrated directly into compatible devices like smartphones and wearables. Instead of a physical SIM card, eSIM enables users to connect to cellular networks by downloading and activating carrier profiles on their devices. This eliminates the need for swapping or inserting physical cards.

With eSIM, travelers can conveniently switch between networks by selecting the desired carrier profile. It offers flexibility, reduces dependency on physical cards, and simplifies the process of connecting to local networks while traveling internationally. eSIM provides a seamless and streamlined approach to managing mobile connectivity.

Ok, now that we know what eSIM is, let me introduce to you our list of the 5 best eSIM services in South Korea.

eSIM is more secure than a physical SIM because it can't be removed if your iPhone is lost or stolen.

With eSIM, you don't need to obtain, carry, and swap physical SIM cards (which can also be lost), or wait for them to arrive by mail.

You can have two eSIMs active on supported iPhone models at the same time. This could, for example, include one eSIM for your home and another eSIM for the place you're visiting.

You can swap which of your stored eSIMs are active simply by changing your selections in Settings. This might be helpful if you travel regularly to the same places.

Do you want to go to South Korea but are worried about internet access? In such cases, you can freely connect to the internet overseas, including in South Korea, by simply downloading an eSIM to your smartphone. Please try using the convenient eSIM, which you don't have to worry about losing.

In this article, we will explain in an easy-to-understand manner how to choose a South Korea eSIM and its advantages and disadvantages for first-time users. Please read until the end.

What is a South Korea eSIM?

An " eSIM " stands for Embedded SIM . Unlike traditional physical SIM cards, it refers to an electronic SIM that is built into the device. In Japan, eSIM-compatible devices were introduced in 2018, and since then the number of users has been rapidly increasing. Since the eSIM is built into the device, you don't have to worry about it bending or breaking like a physical card.

Traditional SIM cards need to be inserted into mobile devices such as cell phones and smartphones, requiring you to remove the back cover of the cell phone and insert it into a specific slot. The biggest difference is that the form, size, and the hassle of replacement are completely different.

What Phones are Compatible with eSIM?

Before booking please confirm that your mobile device is compatible with eSIM and the local network. Be aware that an administrative charge will apply if there are phone compatibility issues, even after booking. Steps to Verify: Go to your device's Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data/SIM Card options and look for the option to ‘Add cellular/mobile data plan/eSim’.

【Compatible Devices】

iPhones sold in or produced for China, and some versions from Hong Kong, do not support eSIM.

MVNO vs. Local Network eSIM Plans

In South Korea, you have two primary options when choosing an eSIM provider: Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) and local network providers.

Local Network Providers

  • Major Providers: The top local networks include KT (Korea Telecom), SK Telecom, and LG U+.
  • Service Experience: All three providers score high in terms of 4G coverage experience, with ratings close to 9.9 out of 10.
  • Expat Accessibility: Services typically require an Alien Registration Card and a passport, with varying degrees of upfront costs.
  • Providers: Popular MVNOs include Airalo, Holafly, and Nomad.
  • Advantages: These providers generally offer flexible and cost-effective plans ideal for short trips. Features include instant purchase and activation along with the ability to use the eSIM as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
  • Coverage: While MVNOs provide sufficient coverage, it may not be as extensive or reliable in rural areas compared to local networks.

Overview of Top South Korea eSIM Providers

We evaluated various eSIM providers including Airhub, Nomad, Airalo, RedTeaGo, and GigSky. We tested network speeds, latency, and the ease of purchase and installation, aiming to offer an objective review of these services. Our findings, focused on network performance and overall usability, are intended to guide travelers in selecting reliable eSIM options for their trips to South Korea and beyond.

2. Because it has good reviews

good reviews of South Korea eSIM

There are many eSIMs for South Korea, but Trip.com's eSIM has received high ratings from users.

It connected immediately!

Easy even for the first time

I was saved by the support

Here are some voices from people who used Trip.com's eSIM for South Korea.

As others reviewed, it is smooth to take a QR code in the voucher with another mobile phone instead of a screenshot and read it. We recommend that you do it before leaving the country. I was relieved that the local connection can be done while searching for the connection method when there is free Wi-Fi at the airport. In Korea, I only used LINE, Google, and Instagram, but there was no problem with radio waves!
I bought two units for 3 days without limit! Both communication was smooth and the setting was easy! When I used other esim, I needed to connect to wifi at the time of setting, but I felt that it was good to set the movement time because I didn't need wifi 🙌
It was easy, easy to set, and there was no problem with speed.

3. Because there is 24-hour customer support

Trip.com is always ready to respond to any unexpected situations. Professional customer support is available 24/7, providing optimal support and solutions. Support is provided in multiple languages, including Japanese, English, and Chinese, so it is chosen by many people.

Which Works Better in South Korea? eSIM, SIM Card, Wi-Fi Router Comparison

SIM cards can be used without worrying about charging like a Wi-Fi router, and they don't add much to your luggage. You can choose from many plans. However, there are disadvantages such as complicated settings and the need for a SIM-free smartphone.

Wi-Fi routers allow multiple people to share and connect to multiple devices just by setting them up after arrival. However, there may be issues with battery life, the hassle of handing over, and increased costs. eSIMs do not require a physical SIM card, so there is no worry of loss or damage. The setup is relatively simple, but the compatible smartphones are limited.

Below, we have summarized the three characteristics and precautions in a table.

3 benefits of using eSIM in South Korea

3 benefits of using eSIM in South Korea

1. You can use it as soon as you arrive in Korea

When you visit South Korea, it is a big advantage of eSIM to be able to connect to the Internet smoothly from the moment you land at the airport . In the case of traditional SIM cards, you need to purchase at the airport shop or have time to pick up your pre-ordered SIM. However, by downloading the eSIM in advance, you can connect to the network the moment you get off the plane.

This will help you make your trip more efficient, such as arranging a taxi or giving directions to your hotel.

2. No risk of loss or damage

Traditional SIM cards are very small and require careful handling. Especially when replacing it at a travel destination, the risk of loss or damage increases. On the other hand, eSIMs don't have a physical shape, so you don't have to worry about them being lost or damaged. You don't have to worry about opening the SIM tray with a small pin or accidentally dropping the SIM card.

3. Dual SIM possible

By utilizing an eSIM, it is possible to use a dual SIM. Dual SIM means that you can use two networks on one smartphone.

3 disadvantages of using eSIM in South Korea

3 disadvantages of using eSIM in South Korea

1. Limited models

To use an eSIM, you'll need a smartphone or tablet that supports eSIM. Newer models are now compatible with eSIM, but older models and some mid- and low-end devices don't support eSIM.

This will take you through the hassle of checking if an eSIM is available on your current device. If you need to buy a new device to use the eSIM, you'll also need to consider the costs involved.

2. Not available on multiple devices

Traditional SIM cards can be replaced between devices. Therefore, one SIM can be used on multiple devices. However, since the eSIM is built into the device, it is difficult to easily move it between multiple devices. Therefore, it may be inconvenient for those who use multiple devices during their trip to Korea.

3. I can't use my phone number

Your eSIM data plan may not provide you with a unique phone number or may require an additional fee.

This can be inconvenient in situations where you need a local phone number (for example, to make a restaurant reservation or contact a hotel). Conventional SIM cards often provide a phone number as a set with data communication, so this is a point to keep in mind when considering the use of eSIM.

3 Tips for Choosing an South Korea eSIM

3 Tips for Choosing an South Korea eSIM

1. Reviews and Reputation

By checking the reviews and reputation of other users on the internet, you can learn about their actual usage experiences. Do thorough research to obtain information about the quality of carrier support, communication speed, etc.

2. Plan Details and Fees

Check the details of the usage plan, including call charges, data capacity, and expiration date. Choose a plan that suits your usage situation, such as plans that support communication both inside and outside South Korea, or plans for long-term stays.

3. Variety of Carriers

There are multiple communication carriers in South Korea. Compare the usage area, communication quality, plan price, data capacity, etc., and choose a carrier that suits your needs. It is important to choose a reliable carrier.

Whichever is available for your destinations and suits your travel needs better! You can choose plans from 1 to 90 days.

Could the internet speed with my Holafly eSIM be reduced?

In a rare scenario, yes. Operators enforce an international measure called Fair Usage Policy to ensure fair internet usage and allow all users to enjoy optimal connection. This measure might be applied for a period of no more than one (1) day. It’s beyond Holafly’s control, but don’t worry! If this measure affects you, the restriction will be lifted the next day, and you’ll have your original plan speed back.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that can be installed directly into your smartphone or other mobile devices. It is an alternative to the physical, removable SIM card you’re used to.

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

Yes, you can do so by logging into your customer panel on the Holafly Center. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you’ve made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

Can I share data with other devices?

Certainly! With the South Korea eSIM, you have the capability to share up to 500MB of data per day across devices by creating a WiFi connection using your smartphone. Refer to your device instructions for guidance on setting up a WiFi connection via a mobile hotspot.

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

After your purchase, we will send a QR code and manual instructions to your email. Either print the QR code or open it on your computer. On your cell phone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code. Your phone will allow you to assign a specific name to this data plan. You will now be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cell phone settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Consult your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

When should I set up my eSIM?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan turning on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code to take it and manual instructions with you on vacation, just in case. Remember that you need internet access to install the eSIM.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIMs and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

If needed or when changing phones during your trip, you can transfer your eSIM. However, note that you can only transfer the eSIM to two devices—the original one and a new one. Once you’ve installed it on a different device than the original, you won’t be able to reinstall it on the original device and you must deliver the eSIM from the original device to install it in the second device.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSim at the same time. Choose the Sim card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. Please remember that if you leave your Sim card activated, your network provider may apply data roaming charges to receive or make phone calls as well as SMS.

How do I get a refund?

At Holafly we are aware that our users may have unforeseen events after making the purchase. Therefore, you can request a refund in the following circumstances: – You bought the eSIM without checking the compatibility with your cellphone. – You canceled your trip or you no longer need the eSIM. – Our eSIMs generally work fine, but if you experience connection issues, we can provide you with a full or partial refund. Once the refund is approved, you will receive the money on to the same account with which you made the payment. This process can take between 5 to 10 business days. For more details, terms and conditions, we invite you to read our Refund Policy .

To which mobile network will I connect at my destination?

Your eSIM will connect to all the local phone networks that Holafly partners up with. You can review them in the Technical Specs tab.

Is Holafly my best option?

It is! Of course if you ask us which eSIM card is the best, we will naturally answer it’s ours! Why? Because of our unlimited data, the flexibility to select a custom number of days, and many more special features.

1 day unlimited data

If you have any questions during this process, remember we're here to assist you 24/7 through our Online chat.

South Korea Through the Seasons: The Ideal Times to Visit

Here’s everything you need to know to plan the trip of a lifetime to beautiful south korea..

Buddhist monk meditation at seorak mountains at the Seorak-san National Park, Soraksan, South korea

South Korea has long been a dream holiday destination for thousands of people around the world, and with its vibrant culture, intriguing history and cuisine to die for, it’s the perfect place to take a trip and create memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

But when is the best time to visit to ensure you get the most out of this enthralling destination? Here’s everything you need to know to plan the trip of a lifetime to beautiful South Korea.

Weather in South Korea

One of the first things to consider when planning a trip to South Korea is the weather. If you’re planning a multi-stop exploration of the country then you’ll need to bear in mind that it can differ between the different regions – for example, the weather in capital city Seoul is often different to that of Pocheon, in the north in country – which in turn, can vary greatly from that of the coastal city of Incheon.

In general, South Korea has temperatures of around 25-30 degrees celsius in summer and in winter temperatures fluctuate, somewhat dramatically, between -10 degrees celsius and +15 degrees celsius.

But no time of year is a bad time to visit; it just depends on what you want to experience and what you hope to get out of your trip. For example, if you prefer to avoid the big tourist crowds in popular areas like Seoul or the Gyeongbokgung Palace, travelling in winter might be the right choice for you.

Consider sights only open during parts of the year

Another deciding factor in terms of when is best to travel to South Korea is whether you want  to experience the country’s natural environment or go hiking in places like the beautiful Seoraksan National Park, which looks at its most spectacular during the autumn as the leaves transform into a myriad of colourful hues and the landscapes take on an undeniably magical feel. The crisp, cooler weather makes it a great time for hiking the park’s many routes, whereas in winter it is bitterly cold and in summer, uncomfortably hot for strenuous walking.

If you want to visit a particular attraction that is only open at a certain time of year then this is something else that should guide your planning, as travelling at a certain time of year may be crucial to your enjoyment and will ensure that you end your trip feeling fulfilled. It’s always wise to do some research about the sights you want to see ahead of time, as this will allow you ample time to plan a realistic itinerary and ensure that you don’t miss out on seeing or doing anything that’s important to you. Choosing between ancient temples like Jogyesa or walking tours of Seoul can feel impossible, but with some careful planning it’s possible to do it all.

General advice for travelling in South Korea

South Korea is widely considered a safe country to travel to, with a low crime rate compared to many other countries, and with a friendly and open-minded population it’s a welcoming place to visit. Nevertheless, there are a few things to bear in mind when planning a trip to this beautiful country to ensure your adventure goes smoothly.

Firstly, remember to pack for unpredictable weather. As the conditions can change quickly and with little warning in South Korea, particularly when moving between places, you’ll need a range of attire to ensure you have all bases covered, including shorts and t-shirts, a hat, waterproofs and a warm jumper – particularly if you’re travelling to the country at any other time but in the summer.

Staying connected is also important as it’ll allow you to consult maps and planning apps as well as keeping up with friends and family back home – so making sure you have access to the internet via your smartphone is essential. Roaming costs with your usual mobile network can be expensive, but with an eSIM card for your travel in Korea you can continue to access all the information you need and keep the lines of communication in an easier and more cost-effective way.

Before you go, take some time to research customs and cultural differences to avoid any potential issues arising should you inadvertently get things wrong. South Korea is a place where culture matters, and you will benefit greatly from being able to engage in an appropriate way.

Plan your dream holiday in South Korea

Whether you travel to South Korea in winter, summer, or any other time of year, you’re guaranteed to have an incredible experience There’s plenty to see and do, no matter who you are or what you enjoy, and the chances are that by the time you have to leave, you’ll already be planning your next visit.

As well as considering the weather, look into the seasonal events and festivals you might be able to coincide your trip with, as attending or witnessing them could enhance your experience even further. Each season brings its own unique charm – whether it’s the cherry blossoms of spring, the vibrant autumn foliage, or the winter festivals that light up the cold months – adding a special touch to your journey and offering the chance to feel a deeper connection to the culture and traditions of the country.

From the rich culture and impressive temples of capital city, Seoul, to the beauty of the countryside, South Korea has got it all.

韓国のeSIMの利用に関するよくある質問

travel esim south korea

travel esim south korea

travel esim south korea

travel esim south korea
