IndiGo, SpiceJet are rolling out the new IATA Travel Pass. How does it work?

If you are stressed about your health documents not checking out at border control, you may want to try out the new IATA Travel Pass.The travel pass allows authorities to verify the health credentials of a passenger. For you, it is a hassle-free way to store and transmit your health documents at the entry gate. The IATA Travel Pass is being trialled on some routes by Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Etihad, British Airways, Air France and other major carriers. This week, IndiGo has become the first Indian carrier to roll out the IATA travel pass, to be followed next week by SpiceJet. So, how does it work? Here’s a little explainer:

Who or what is IATA?

The International Air Transport Association is the trade association for the world's airlines. It helps formulate industry policies, deals with major aviation issues and provides support in aviation activities.

What is the IATA Travel Pass?

As the COVID situation fluctuates across the globe, regulations continue to change, making air travel a complex affair. Often, this has also resulted in health check errors and fraud. The IATA Travel Pass hopes to tackle these problems and make travel smoother and more efficient for passengers and airlines.

What does it actually do?

The IATA travel pass is a system to help governments and other gatekeepers authenticate the health credentials of travellers. All information stored in the pass is verified, saving authorities the trouble of validating each case independently. For you, it means a smoother, hassle-free experience.

Great, so how does it work?

The IATA Travel Pass is made of four modules:

• A global registry of health requirements to help you find accurate, updated information about travel, testing and vaccine requirements for your journey
• A global registry of testing/vaccination centres to help you find testing labs at your departure location and fulfill the requirements of your destination
• A Lab App that enables authorised labs and testing centres to share your test or vaccination certificate with you digitally
• A contactless travel app that helps you receive these certificates and share them with airlines and authorities as a verification of your health status. The app will also create a ‘digital passport' for you and help you manage all your travel documentation digitally.

Broadly, the promise of the app rests on the credibility of lab results or vaccine certificates. For this, IATA works with an ever-expanding list of government-approved laboratories. IATA itself does not verify the results—it provides the means for registered labs to send test results and vaccine details to travellers in a secure manner whereby the details can be verified to guarantee authenticity. “Test results and vaccination details are sent from the registered laboratory to the passenger’s phone as a verifiable credential. It is not possible for the passenger to tamper with this data. There are also checks put in place to ensure the passenger’s identity to avoid transferring test results to a new person,” per IATA. In short, the reports coming from a certified lab can be considered genuine.

These verified certificates for COVID-19 tests or vaccinations will be stored on your phone. At entry points, you will be prompted to release your certificates. If you choose to do so, the data is sent by them from their phones directly to the other entity. You always remain in control of your data, and your privacy is protected.

How do you create your digital passport through the IATA Travel Pass?

The IATA Contactless Travel App is a module of the IATA Travel Pass. It allows you to

• Create a ‘digital passport’,
• Receive test and vaccination certificates and verify that they are sufficient for their itinerary, and
• Share testing or vaccination certificates with airlines and authorities to facilitate travel.

To create a ‘digital passport’:

• Download the free IATA Travel Pass to their Smartphone
• Take a selfie
• Complete a ‘liveness test’ as instructed by the phone – i.e. move your head, close your eyes in front of the camera.
• Take a scan of the data on the two lines at the bottom of the passport photo page.
• Scan the data-chip on the passport as prompted by the phone
• The IATA Travel Pass then verifies that: a) the passport belongs to the person in front of the phone b) that the passport is genuine and has not been tampered with c) The verified digital credential is then stored on the passenger's phone and can be used as their ‘digital passport’.

Which airlines accept the IATA Travel Pass?

The IATA travel pass is being trialled by over 50 airlines including Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Swiss, British Airways, Air France, Malaysia Airlines, Japan Airlines, Air New Zealand, Gulf Air, Air Baltic, Korean Air, Qantas and Virgin Atlantic. The two Indian carriers coming on board are IndiGo and SpiceJet.

Indigo is the only indian airline, so far, to have signed up for the trial in which more than 40 international airlines are participating. the international air transport association says the pass will facilitate international travel without the need to quarantine.

How will the pass work?

The pass is a mobile app that informs passengers about the tests, vaccines and other measures they need to take ahead of their travel. It has details on where they can get tested and also allows them to share their results as well as vaccination status with the authorities in a verifiable and safe manner.

The pass will provide governments the means to verify the authenticity of tests or vaccinations and identify those presenting their certificates. It will help airlines provide information on test requirements and ensure that a passenger meets the travel guidelines of their destination.

The pass will help laboratories to issue certificates that will be recognised by governments. The data collated by IATA will provide information on test requirements and ways to securely share the results and certificates with airlines as well as border authorities.

Why IndiGo is the only Indian airline participating in the pilot?

The trial is open to all airlines. On August 3, IndiGo announced it had partnered with IATA to become the first Indian airline to launch the pilot.

How will the Travel Pass help flyers?

The Travel Pass will help passengers to store and manage their verified certificates for COVID-19 tests as well as vaccines. Instead of carrying a paper certificate, a passenger can have these on the mobile phone. It is more secure and efficient than current paper processes used for managing health requirements (the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis, for example). This is important given the potentially enormous scale of testing or vaccine verifications that will be needed.

When will the pass be launched?

IndiGo hopes to launch the IATA Travel Pass in the third week of August on two of its international routes—Male and Doha. British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Qatar, Emirates and Turkish are among more than 40 airlines that are part of the pass trial.

Will this help the aviation industry?

IATA says its Travel Pass will help give governments the confidence to reopen borders without quarantine. To do so, governments need to be confident that they are not importing Covid. “Testing, or proof of vaccine, is the solution. IATA Travel Pass will manage and verify the secure flow of testing or vaccination information between governments, airlines, laboratories and travellers which will guarantee the traveller’s COVID-19 status,” IATA says.

But in India, since all borders are closed and international flights are only being operated under an air bubble arrangement, gains for IndiGo are expected to be limited.

However, with over 40 airlines part of the pilot, it opens up avenues for seamless travel for IndiGo passengers with carriers that have an interline agreement with the Indian carrier.

An interline agreement is a voluntary commercial agreement between various airlines for passengers requiring multiple flights on multiple airlines. Such agreements allow passengers to hop flights between airlines without gathering their bags or checking in again.

Indigo becomes first indian airline to test iata's travel pass.

IndiGo has become India's first airline to pilot IATA's Travel Pass. The app allows travelers to pre-verify their travel requirements, including testing, vaccination, and entry guidelines. While the app was originally set to launch weeks ago, it remains in testing with select airlines globally.

Domestic and international?

In a statement this week, IndiGo announced that it will be India's first airline to use IATA's Travel Pass for its flights. The exact routes it will be rolled out on remain under wraps, including if it could be used on domestic flights. While the app is meant for international travel, India's complex domestic testing rules mean it may come in handy there too.

IndiGo joins dozens of other airlines globally using the Travel Pass in trials. From LATAM to Finnair to Ethiopian , the app is being tested globally before being rolled out to passengers at large. To access the app, travelers currently need an airline-given six-digit code.

In a statement about the inclusion of Travel Pass on IndiGo flights, CEO Ronojoy Dutta said,

"We are proud to partner with IATA to become the country’s first airline to take this step towards enabling customers with a travel pass mobile app. This initiative is a significant step to prepare for a new normal, especially with regards to international travel...We are certain that our collaboration with IATA on this innovation will prove to be a stepping-stone towards international air travel recovery, while providing a hassle-free experience to our customers.”

The pass saves time

IATA Travel Pass will save both passengers and airlines a lot of time . Anyone who has traveled internationally since last March knows the effort that goes into ensuring you are eligible to travel. From negative test reports to health declarations and vaccination proof, paperwork is a maze for any international flight these days.

The same applies to airlines and immigration . Staffers must verify every single document to ensure it is authentic and meets the destination's requirements. This has led to long lines at many airports, extending into the hours , and a lot of confusion about what is needed. IATA Travel Pass aims to simplify this into a single application.

Instead of paperwork, travelers just have to upload their details straight onto Travel Pass. The app has also partnered with testing centers to direct send results to the app, cutting down the chances of fraud too . Once you have met the requirements, a green tick will appear to let airlines know that you are ready to fly!

Rolling out

IATA's Travel Pass initiative is not new by any means. It came into operation in January 2021 and quickly began finding airline partners. However, despite timelines for a public rollout , the app remains limited to a few routes with trial airlines . For digital passports to truly take off, they will need to expand their reach and gain more acceptance globally. Until then, we'll all be carrying paperwork to the airport for our next flight.
