Where to find a SIM card at Melbourne airport, and which one to get

This guide is to help travellers arriving in Melbourne find where to buy a SIM card. I travel to Melbourne airport frequently for work and visit. One of the first things I do when getting out of the airport is to pick up a SIM card for my phone.

There are two shops that sell SIM cards at Melbourne Airport:

I’ve found the shops occasionally sell out of the cheaper SIM cards, or the staff were pushing me to the more expensive ones.

At Terminal 2, International Arrivals , there are 2 SIM card shops:

• Optus, which sells SIM cards for the phone carrier Optus,
• Welcome to Melbourne , which sells SIM cards for various phone providers and tickets for the bus to the city

At the Domestic Terminals (1, 3, and 4) , I’ve never been able to find a SIM card shop. Typically travellers without SIM cards arriving on domestic flights have been in transit from Sydney. If you’ve arrived with Qantas or Virgin, it’s not far to walk to the international arrivals area to buy a SIM card. Otherwise, wait until the city to buy one.

Overall, I find Optus (starting at $10) 1 to be the best option for SIM cards at Melbourne Airport . Optus typically offers coverage everywhere I travel, which usually places them above Vodafone on my list of preferences. If I know I’m going to travel extensively in rural Australia, I like to find a Telstra SIM card instead.

Which SIM cards are available at Melbourne Airport?

Of the SIM cards available at Melbourne Airport, I consider which one to get based on:

• Making phone calls

Great for coverage: Telstra and Optus, each from $10 AUD

Out of the options at Melbourne Airport, the best SIM card I’ve found for coverage is the Telstra Pre-Paid max 2 , starting at $10 AUD for 7 days.

Coverage is important in Australia if you plan on travelling outside the major cities and towns. If you’re trip is limited to Melbourne, any of the major mobile phone networks (provided by Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone) will work. For other common visitor destinations:

• Great Ocean Road , in my experience Telstra and Optus work well here, while Vodafone coverage can be spotty.
• Phillip Island , all major carriers should work here.
• Grampians , all major carriers should work in the towns, but Telstra offers the best coverage on the mountains themselves.

I like to use either Telstra or Optus if I’m travelling significantly outside the larger cities and towns:

• Telstra provides the most coverage in the countryside: it covers highways, smaller towns, and many remote areas.
• Optus is the covers most highways and some of the smaller towns. Optus is typically cheaper than Telstra.

Smaller SIM card brands will use the bigger networks to offer coverage. I’ve found the better deals on these smaller SIM card brands are only available once you leave the airport.

Great for data: Optus, from $30 AUD

For visitors staying up to 90 days in Australia, I’ve found Optus to offer the best deal on data. The $30 (AUD) Optus Prepaid Epic Data SIM card includes up to 35GB of data for each 28 day period as a bonus for the first three 28-day periods - so roughly 3 months. After that it drops down to 10GB/28-days, though this isn’t a concern for most short term travellers.

Great for calls: Vodafone, $20 or $40 depending on current deals

For calls back home, Vodafone includes generous minutes with its prepaid SIM card to dozens of countries . The price for this SIM card seems to be inconsistent, either it’s $20 or $40 AUD 3 . I feel it’s a good deal at either price point if you are interested in making phone calls back home.

The Vodafone prepaid SIM includes:

• 500 minutes of calls to Singapore, Malaysia, China and territories, Japan South Korea, UK, US and territories, and many more
• 100 minutes of calls to Most of South America, Most of Europe, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and also many more

For local calls in Australia , both Telstra and Vodafone offer unlimited local calls to standard Australian phone numbers. Optus offers 100 minutes of local calls, which is enough for most people.

Is it better to buy a SIM card in Melbourne city or at the airport?

If I can afford 15 minutes in queue, I like to buy the SIM card at the airport , and I usually buy the Optus option. If I’m in a rush, I’ll buy a SIM card in the city at a convenience store.

There is often a long queue at my preferred shop, Optus, however with coffee in hand from the nearby cafe, I tend to tough it out for the 10-15 minutes it takes.

The previously mentioned Welcome to Melbourne shop has less of a queue, but I feel the staff are less helpful in terms of setting up and activating the new SIM card.

Which SIM cards are better value if bought in the city?

For better value data: coles mobile for $20 aud.

Coles, a large supermarket chain in Australia, offers a $20 AUD plan that includes 28GB of data 4 . It is valid for 35 days. Coles has a large number of shops that you can buy this SIM card from. Network coverage is the same as Optus. Unlimited local calls are available though the rates aren’t as good as Vodafone.

For calls: Stick with Vodafone

For international calls , it’s hard to beat the Vodafone prepaid deal with 500 minutes to most of the world’s population.

For local calls , Coles has a 10 day $10 AUD SIM card that includes unlimited local calls.

For longer expiry: Any

All of the SIM cards mentioned here, available in Melbourne, and Australia in general, can be topped up and have their validity extended.

Do I need ID to buy a SIM card at Melbourne Airport?

Yes, identification is required to buy a SIM card at Melbourne Airport and anywhere else in Australia. A passport is sufficient, and the address you’re staying at will also need to be supplied. An activation process may be required for the SIM. The shop that sells the SIM card can do it, or you can do it on your phone once the SIM is inserted - different SIM cards support different activation methods, it’s easy but if you’re not sure ask when buying.

Recording identification is done either when you buy the SIM card, or when you activate. If you’re not sure about the process, buy from a shop where they can help you activate the SIM card.

Is Wi-Fi available at Melbourne Airport?

Yes, Wi-FI is available at Melbourne Airport. I usually connect to it while I’m waiting for my bag or while I’m waiting in line for the customs check. The Wi-Fi can be a little slow, I’ve found it only useful for updating messages and emails; it often struggles to load news articles.

The Wi-Fi at the airport helps me update on missed news while I’m waiting for bag collection and customs. I feel these embody the Australian spirit and can be a bit slower that what I’m used to in the likes of Singapore or Hong Kong.

How to get from the airport to the city, while connected

Catching the skybus.

SkyBus is the mass-transit option for transporting people from the airport to the city. Melbourne airport does not have a train connection. Taxi and services such as Uber are available. I prefer taxi (company money) or Uber (my money), even though they don’t provide Wi-Fi. The journey takes 30-60 mins depending on where you are going in Melbourne city.

Each SkyBus has Wi-Fi on board . People tell me the service isn’t good on the bus. I usually buy a SIM card before leaving the airport, or accept that I won’t be connected. If you’re next destination is the city - the train station Southern Cross or any hotel/AirBnB in the central area - I’ve found I don’t need a map to locate a convenience store that sells SIM cards.

Uber, using the airport Wi-Fi to book

It may be possible to book an Uber using the free Wi-Fi at Melbourne Airport. I don’t like this option because:

• Wi-Fi coverage isn’t great once you leave the terminal building - Uber pickup is a short walk outside the terminal building
• Wi-Fi speed, even when connected with full signal, is unreliable and may disrupt the Uber booking process.

I haven’t tried the other ride-share options available in Melbourne. Ride share in Melbourne includes:

• DiDi, pickup at airport follows the process on their website
• Ola, also have a process on their website for airport pick up
• Taxify, not available at Melbourne Airport.

Taxis in Melbourne do not have free Wi-Fi. The convenience of going straight to my destination means that I often prefer to jump straight in a taxi rather than line up for a SIM card at the airport - especially if work is paying for the taxi ride.

Can I roam with my Australian SIM card to another country

New zealand.

Optus offers 5 days of 10GB data roaming with its prepaid sim cards for an extra $20. This is only worth it for trips to New Zealand of 5 days or less. For trips longer than 5 days, local SIM cards can be bought at most airports that have flights from Australia and further abroad.

This Optus prepaid data roaming also works in Hong Kong, Singapore, USA and UK.

Prepaid roaming credit can be added on the Optus recharge website or in an Optus shop.

Most New Zealand destinations are available by direct flight from Melbourne. Direct flights take around 3.5 hours and are available to: Auckland, Christchurch, and Queenstown.

Despite being neighbours, roaming a prepaid Australian SIM card into Indonesia is expensive.

Telstra offers a very expensive $29 AUD for 100MB of data.

Vodafone is slightly cheaper at $25 AUD for a mix of data or calls (up to 200MB data), but it only lasts 3 days. A 7 day option is available for $35 AUD.

I don’t like the idea of taking an Australian SIM card to Indonesia, especially when there are so many local options available.

From Melbourne, Indonesia is accessible directly via Bali and Jakarta.

For short trips of up to 5 days, the Optus prepaid 10GB data roaming plan is $20.

All arriving and departing passengers must have a valid passport or  travel document .

Arriving passengers need to complete an  Incoming Passenger Card . If you are not an Australian Citizen you must hold a valid visa when entering Australia.

If you hold an eligible ePassport and are aged 16 years or over, you are eligible to use  SmartGate  when arriving at, or departing from, Australian airports. .

Declaring items

See the Can you bring it in? section for more information on what can be brought in and out of Australia, and what items need to be declared.

Carrying expensive items

If you are departing Australia with expensive items (such as computers, cameras and video cameras) and you intend to bring them back to Australia, register these items on the  B263 Goods exported in passenger baggage form .

You cannot use this form if you intend claiming a refund under the  Tourist Refund Scheme . The goods registered must be easily identifiable; serial numbers etc. must be included.

Goods purchased  duty or tax free  in Australia must be taken with you and inspected at the departure point. You may also need to declare these on your return.

Passport stamping

We no longer stamp Australian passports as a matter of course but should you require evidence of travel you may ask one of our officers to do so.

Fingerprint checking

As a non-citizen of Australia, you may be required to have your fingerprints checked when arriving or departing. The fingerprint check will help verify your identity and assist in resolving any issues of concern.

A minimum of four fingerprints will be scanned. Checks will be conducted against the Department’s immigration data holdings and may also be checked against security or law enforcement records. 

Biometric checks should only take a few minutes of your time, with scans typically taking a few minutes to complete. 

The fingerprint scans will not be retained. The scans will be deleted as soon as the check is completed.

Using cameras and mobile phones

Passengers may use their cameras or mobile phones unless:

• they are undergoing a clearance process
• they are asked not to by an Border Force officer.​

Officers at international airports have the power to direct a person in a customs controlled area not to use cameras, sound recording equipment or mobile phones under the Customs Act 1901. They may exercise this power where it is believed that the use of the camera or mobile phone may impede officers from carrying out their duties, or pose a risk to the border.  Unauthorised use of cameras, mobile phones or other electronic devices occurs when a person has been directed not to use such equipment but continues to do so.

Baggage examination and questioning

Border Force officers have legislative powers to conduct baggage examinations and to question travellers to identify breaches of certain customs, quarantine and other Commonwealth legislation, including the import and export of prohibited goods.

If you have any concerns about questioning or examination, you should direct your inquiry to the officer or their supervisor at the time of questioning.

Passenger selection

Risk assessment techniques are employed to identify which passengers will be examined or searched.

All movements across the border are screened using a range of intelligence, targeting and profiling techniques.

Some checks are done before an aircraft even leaves for Australia. Airlines provide the Department with advance notice of passenger details , which are analysed to identify risk factors. The Department also accesses and evaluates information held in airline reservation systems to identify passengers who might be a risk to Australia’s border security.

Questioning

Border Force officers exercise questioning powers under Section 195 of the Customs Act 1901 and a range of other Commonwealth legislation. Officers have powers to question travellers about whether they (or a person accompanying them) have any dutiable, excisable or prohibited goods.

They also exercise powers to question travellers in relation to other matters such as their immigration clearance, the nature or origin of wildlife specimens and whether they have any currency or bearer negotiable instruments (for example, cheques or money orders).

Questions may include (but are not limited to):

• the nature and content of the baggage
• the person’s knowledge of what is in the bags
• who packed the bags
• where the person has travelled from
• where the person commenced the journey
• the source of any goods in the bag
• the price of the goods
• the manner in which the goods were obtained.

Refusal to answer questions may lead to a physical examination of goods carried by the passenger, delaying the passenger’s clearance.

Baggage examination

Border Force officers also exercise the power to examine goods subject to Customs control under Section 186 of the Customs Act 1901. This may involve:

• opening packages
• using a device such as an x ray or ion scanner on the goods
• testing or analysing the goods
• measuring or counting the goods
• using a detector dog to examine the goods
• if the goods are a document, reading the documents directly or with the use of an electronic device.

Officers may arrange for another officer or person with relevant experience to assist in the examination of goods and a traveller’s goods may be retained for examination.

Copying documents

After examining an item, Border Force officers may copy a document where they are satisfied that the document may contain information relevant to:

• prohibited goods
• an offence against the Customs Act or a prescribed Act
• certain security matters.

A ‘document’ includes information stored on mobile phones, SIM cards, laptops, personal electronic recording apparatus and computers. There is no requirement for the traveller carrying the documents to be present when a document is copied.

Electronic devices

Electronic devices held for forensic examination under section 186 of the Customs Act will be retained for no longer than 14 days, provided there is no content on any device retained which renders the device subject to seizure under Customs-related laws. If any device is subject to seizure, the examination of any associated retained devices may take longer than 14 days.

Information about travellers’ definite itineraries, the impact on legitimate livelihoods or the need to contact family members will be taken into account when prioritising the examination. Cooperation from travellers regarding access to devices will assist in expediting the examination but without that cooperation the examination may take longer than 14 days.

How to Exchange Currency at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport

There are two ways you can change money:

1. Order your currency ahead of time and pick it up at the airport

This is by far, the cheapest way to buy currency at Melbourne airport. The exchange rates are much better than buying it over the counter.

It's really easy:

• Order your currency online and choose a pick up location as Melbourne Airport
• Pay for it using BPAY (and avoid the card fee!)
• Pick up your ordered currency

Please keep in mind, you'll avoid the card fee if you choose BPAY . The rate is locked in on the day you book the transaction. You can choose your pick up date, but if you use BPAY, you'll need to allow at least 3 business days. Also, they offer a better rate for amounts above $2,000, but have a maximum transaction size of $5,000.

Currency Exchange Places in Melbourne Tullamarine Airport

There are 8 Travelex outlets in the Melbourne Airport for currency exchange. There 7 in the International airport, Terminal 2 and 1 outlet in Terminal 1 (Qantas).

• Before security, near counter H, Level 1
• Before security, near counter B, Level 1
• After security screening, opposite TRS counter, Level 1
• After security screening, between gates 2 and 4, Level 1
• After security screening, near gates 6 and 10, Level 1

Finding a Myki ticket machine at Melbourne Airport

Most people depart Melbourne Airport via an overpriced mode of transport – SkyBus, taxi or car park. But it is possible to get to the city via a normal public transport – the hard bit is finding a place to buy or top up your Myki card.

The Melbourne Airport website says the machines exist .

In order to travel on public transport in Melbourne, you’ll need a myki card. Top up or check your card balance at the myki machines located throughout the terminals using cash or EFTPOS/credit card. Machine locations: – T2 Arrivals – T3 Arrivals – T4 Baggage Reclaim

But have fun finding them on the official maps .

So here they are.

Terminal 2 – on the ground floor in the arrivals hall.

Next to the toilets.

Terminal 3 – on the ground floor in the arrivals hall.

Beside the windows to the street, next to the corridor towards Terminal 2.

Terminal 4 – on the ground floor in the arrivals hall.

And the bus stop – you need to head down into the dungeon at the Melbourne Airport terminal 4 transport hub.

Exactly the same at Toronto’s Pearson Airport. I knew in advance there was a machine to buy a Presto card for the then brand new airport rail line, but do you think I could find it? I couldn’t.

Compare it to the ticket office at Hong Kong Airport – right in the middle of the arrivals area.

Good review of options. Using standard public transport would be fine but the time to get from Airport to the City might not be. I think SkyBus offers a good service. At around $20 it is direct and frequent. I can’t see the train being any cheaper. It isn’t in Sydney.

I’ve used the bus + train a few times when I lived on the Craigieburn line – it saved the trip into the city, then back out again.

I also tried heading from Sunshine to the airport: bus, tram then a second bus – a direct bus should really run along that corridor:

Had this issue last week for a guest who lacked a myki. Luckily I was accompanying them. We got her myki Explorer from the Skybus booth. Then the 901 & train.

On a related topic, have you ever tried to find a myki outlet via the PTV website? There’s instructions at the bottom of https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/myki/buy-a-myki-and-top-up/where-to-buy-and-top-up/ but have never got them to work.

Earlier this month the machine in Terminal 3 was still in the Virgin baggage collection area but was located at the bottom of the escalators. There is construction work going on that forced it to move, and another commentator recently stated on Daniel Bowen’s blog that this forced the T2 machine to disappear too.

I was at the airport about two months ago – international arrivals was mostly construction hoardings.

How long did you have to wait to take the photos of the machines before there was no one waiting use them?

I’ve used the one at T3 arrivals a few times to get rid of any coins I have before an international flight and there’s never been anyone there.

I’ve never seen anyone use the T2 or T3 myki machines, but have often seen a queue at the Skybus ticket office.

They will make it as difficult as possible to find and access, and justify this on the basis that “hardly anyone uses it”. After all the airport make money from taxi, skybus and parking fees.

At least the bus stop is more obvious than the old one – hidden away near the freight sheds!

Myki app on Google Play. Say no more

Only works if you have an Android phone with NFC – so no iPhone, and no mid-range and budget Android phones.

Myki PTV airport to city is Zone 1and 2, costs $4.50 one way (2hour), best to take the bus that stops at Broadmeadows station, 20 minutes travel time, then train to Melbourne Flinders Street station

Never had any trouble using the myki machine at the bottom of the escalator in the Virgin section.

You can even get an actual card from them. In Sydney you can’t get a card from a machine, there is a top-up machine at most stations but most of them only take credit/atm cards to pay, not cash. In Sydney, you have to go and find a shop, wherever that may be. Not all stations have a shop nearby.

There might be a machine that actually issues cards at the airport or at Central station.

In Melbourne, I’ve found that the 901/train via Broadmeadows to CBD takes about half an hour longer than the Skybus. Unless that time saving can be monetized, thats usually what I do. I find the biggest drawback with taking the train is that there is no way on the train to determine which way the bullshit loop is working if you need to change to another service. Going round the loop one and three quarter times is an even more pointless way to waste half an hour.

Airport train will be a huge waste of money, I think. Worse than Skybus.

I had trouble buying an Opal card at Central Station in 2016 – turns out the ticket office doesn’t sell them, you have to go to a newsagent instead!

Visiting from the US and took a friend’s and this site’s advice of taking the bus to be cheap and just for the fun of it. Boy… I understand why everyone here complains about the difficulty of transportation in/out of Melbourne airport. Sydney has the airport access and Melbourne has SkyBus. Your pain is duly noted and shared.

I arrived into T3 on a VA flight. The myki kiosk was next the escalator at the baggage area, BUT it was dead or more like not even plugged into the power!!! Nada, not a light, not a thing… just dead. I just had exactly 11AUD cash on me and didn’t want to find an ATM to get cash and get the myki Explorer from the SkyBus counter, so I walked over to T4 and was able to find the kiosk and get a $6 card + 5 top up to cover the trip. Since the bus depot is even further out from T4, walk from T3 to T4 wasn’t a waste.

Anyways, I took 901 then train via Broadmeadows and it was really straightforward, even with luggage. The connection at Broadmeadows Station is really easy.

I agree Victoria needs an improvement. In NSW, they accept contactless card payment, the ability to use my foreign credit card or my phone was incredibly easy. I didn’t get an Oval card and just tapping on and off with my phone without thinking ahead, and likely spent more than I would in Victoria with myki, worrying about not over top off the card and not able to get a refund. I still can’t swallow paying $6 for a card and not able to get a refund – this is the only place I know of, of all the cities and countries I’ve traveled to that force visitors to use a card without a way to get a refund.

Most cities offer refunds on their transport smartcards, but sometimes they apply an admin fee for newly purchased cards – for Hong Kong it is a token amount.

How to use a Troika card on Moscow’s Metro, and other ways to buy tickets

Moscow residents can now top up their Troika transport cards with the official Moscow Metro app, subway representatives announced on Oct. 31. To put money on the card, passengers simply need to download the app and transfer money via NFC connection. What other ways can you pay for riding on Moscow’s public transport?

Troika card

It’s by far the most convenient option for using public transport in the Russian capital. This plastic card is valid for five years, so you don’t need to throw it away after your trip to Russia. You can ride with a Troika on the Moscow metro, as well as Moscow’s Central Ring, buses, trams, and trolley buses.

One ride costs 35 rubles ($0.6), but if you change transport within 90 minutes you will only pay 19 rubles ($0.33) for the next journey. Further changes within those 90 minutes are free.

You can top up your card with the subway attendants who sit behind the glass panels, automated terminals, or via the special Moscow Metro app . Kiosks accept both cash and cards. According to the Moscow Metropolitan official site, you can only keep 3,000 rubles ($51) on your Troika. If you don’t use up all your credit before you leave Moscow, you can cash in the card and get your money back - but this is only possible to do at Metro Service Centers (Ulitsa 1905 Goda street, 25 or  Staraya Basmanaya Street, 20 bld 1; 8 a.m.-8 p.m. daily).

Your Troika’s balance can be checked on the app or on the small yellow terminals inside the metro stations.

Important point – one card should only be used by one person (the subway’s rules state that every person should have their own ticket). You can also be hit with a fine of 1,000 ($17) if caught riding the underground without a ticket.

How to get a Troika: Get the card in any metro kiosk or automated ticket office. The card is free, but you need to leave 50 rubles ($0.85) as a deposit. You can return it after.   

United (Yediny) ticket

This red paper card can have 1, 2, 20, 40, or 60 rides on any kind of Moscow public transport, and the price depends on the number of rides (more rides you buy the less you pay for a ride), from 55 rubles ($0.95) to 28 rubles ($0.48). If you plan to use transport a lot, you can buy a ticket for 60 rides for 1,700 rubles ($30). A ticket for one or two rides is only valid for five days, while other kind of tickets can be used for 90 days.

If you don’t plan to use metro, you can order a card for ground transport only (it will be dark blue with TAT letters on the cover). This card costs 1,150 rubles ($19) for 60 rides.

How to get it: You can buy this card in any metro kiosk. Cards for one or two rides can be also purchased in automated ticket offices.

Daily tickets

Muscovites often buy tickets without ride limits for specific periods – 30 days, 60 days, or one year. But Moscow Metro suggest special tickets for tourists – for one day (210 rubles, or $3.6), three days (400 rubles, $6.9) or seven days (800 rubles, $13.8). They also can be used on any kind of public transport. Tourists’ tickets also have no limit for rides.

How to get it: You can buy this card in any metro kiosk.

90 minute ticket

Another kind of ticket allows one ride on the metro and any number of rides on other Moscow public transport within 90 minutes. The card can be for one (65 rubles, or $1.1), two ($130 rubles, or $2.2), and 60 rides (2,650 rubles, or $46). This card is useful if you have to catch different kinds of transport for a short time.

It’s helpful to add this card to your Troika. Moreover, it will save the paper.

Payment via smartphones

Smartphone owners can  pay  travel fares via Samsung Pay and Apple Pay, linked with MasterCard credit card and the Wallet app. Apple Pay can also be installed on iWatch. The price for one fare costs 40 rubles ($0.7). You can also use these apps for buying usual tickets in kiosks.

Since late 2016, this system has been available at all ring railway stations and 80 metro stations across the city.

In the future, smartphone-enabled ticket turnstiles will be installed at all Moscow metro stations.

How to get it: Download the Samsung Pay and Apple Pay and start riding!

Unique tickets have recently appeared in Moscow. Bracelets, rings, and keychains with transport microchips are not only a souvenir from the Russian capital, but also a serious way to use metropolitan. The deposit price for a bracelet is 450 rubles ($8), for a keychain – 350 rubles ($6). One ring costs 2,200 rubles ($38). The price for a fare is the same as for the Troika card.

How to get it: Only at the Pushkinskaya metro station souvenir kiosk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations.

Actually there are other options to inserts transport microchip – for example, in 2015 Moscow engineer Vlad Zaitsev implanted a chip in his hand, so all he has to do is wave at the turnstile and he’s away - but we recommend enjoying Moscow’s transport in a more conventional way.

My recommendation

The best prepaid sim card deal for tourists at Melbourne Airport is an Optus sim card. Compared to Telstra and Vodafone they prepaid sim card deals they offer the best value.

Melbourne Airport

A very modern and easy to navigate airport. International flights all arrival in Terminal 2 and when walking out you are greeted by huge letters saying MELBOURNE. There is only one exit into a spacious arrival hall. Melbourne Airport is not as busy as most airports in Asia, Europe and the USA.

Where to buy a sim card at Melbourne Airport

Buying a prepaid sim card for Australia on arrival at Melbourne Airport is very easy. There are 3 different stores and you can not miss them.

On your left hand side when walking into the arrival hall you will see Welcome Center. This store sells prepaid sim cards from Telstra and Boost. If you are Chinese or Vietnamese speaking this is your place to buy a sim card as they also offer services in these languages. The Welcome Center is NOT an official Telstra retail store, just a reseller.

The Welcome Center store is open from 06.00 am till 02.00 pm and from 5.30 pm till midnight.

On your right hand side you will find the official retail stores of Vodafone and Optus. These stores are both open from 6.30 am till 23.30 pm. All sim card shops at Melbourne Airport accept international credit cards payments.

If you arrive outside the opening hours there is also a vending machine for sim cards behind the Optus shop.

Prices Australia sim cards at Melbourne Airport

Mind you that prices and packages change constantly. Traveltomtom tries to keep this article as up to date as possible. New input in the comments below is always appreciated. Prices below are in Australian Dollar and per January 2024: $1 AUD = 0.68 USD and $1 USD is $1.48 AUD.

At Optus they only offer 2 prepaid sim cards for tourists at Melbourne Airport. They offer a 4G and a 5G sim card deal:

Best prepaid sim card Melbourne Airport

Traveltomtom always recommends buying a prepaid sim card from an official retail store and therefore the Welcome Center is not my first recommendation. However, for Chinese and Vietnamese speaking travelers this store is great as they have everything in Vietnamese and Chinese as well.

Although Telstra has the strongest 4G/5G coverage in Australia the prices for Telstra prepaid sim cards are also slightly more expensive or at least you get less data for the same money.

My conclusion for the best prepaid sim card for Australia at Melbourne Airport is an Optus prepaid sim card. They offer 60 GB data for $25 AUD which is about $17 USD only. The Optus 4G/LTE network coverage is stronger than the Vodafone network.

However, if you are going to travel around Australia then you simply want a Telstra sim card, trust me.
