The best hotels in Sardinia

Mention Sardinia to people, and most will conjure up visions of the Costa Smeralda, the rugged stretch of limpid, azure waters and powder-soft white sand on the north-east coast of the island. The area was ‘discovered’ by Prince Karium Aga Khan IV in the early 1960s; these days billionaire jet-setters, royals and stars such as the Clooneys are drawn to the coast by its five-star hotels, designer shopping, dining scene and, of course, its ravishing natural beauty.

But there is a lot more to Sardinia than this immaculate (some would say too immaculate) strip of the coast; for starters, the rest of the contorted, 1,850km coastline has more gorgeous beaches than any other part of Italy . Towns and cities worth exploring include the pretty port of Cagliari (the capital) in the south, bustling, medieval Alghero on the northwest coast which has a distinctly Spanish vibe (it was once under the rule of the Catalans) and the colourful village of Bosa to its south.

Sardinia is Europe’s oldest landmass and there is a wealth of archaeological remains dotted throughout the wild, silent hinterland including over 7,000 nuraghi (remnants of the ancient, mysterious Nuragic civilization) and the tombs known as “tombe dei giganti”. Then there is the fabulous food and wine (look out for porceddu - whole spit-roasted suckling piglet-, a maggot-infested sheep’s cheese called cazu marzu, white Vermentino and red Cannonau), the bizarre folk festivals, the albino donkeys indigenous to the Isola dell’Asinara… DH Lawrence wrote in 1921 that “Sardinia is out of time and history; this land resembles no other place.” He was right.

How we choose the best hotels in Sardinia

Every hotel on this list has been selected independently by our editors and written by a Condé Nast Traveller journalist who knows the destination and has stayed at that property. When choosing hotels, our editors consider both luxury properties and boutique and lesser-known boltholes that offer an authentic and insider experience of a destination. We’re always looking for beautiful design, a great location and warm service – as well as serious sustainability credentials. We update this list regularly as new hotels open and existing ones evolve.

Whether you're looking to sneak away to the pastel-hued fisherman houses of Cala di Volpe or seek the seclusion of Petra Segreta, tucked into the hills of San Pantaleo, here are the best hotels in Sardinia to book right now.

Romazzino, A Belmond Hotel, Costa Smeralda

Set between crescent-shaped white sandy bays facing the emerald waters of Costa Smeralda lies Romazzino. This hotel was designed in the 1960s by the celebrated architect Michele Busiri Vici, whose emblematic style paints the coast with low-lying whitewashed buildings made of sinuous, curved forms that blend in with the natural landscapes. This is Romazzino’s first season under the helm of Belmond, who commissioned Puglia-based designers Palomba Serafini to spruce up the exteriors with a laid-back, coastal mood that honours the island’s craftsmanship and local materials. There are one hundred rooms and suites, some of which are housed in the main building and featuring balconies or gardens that artfully frame the views of the Mediterranean, while others are in a series of splendid stand-alone villas with private pools. The outdoor spaces are a colourful feast; with fuchsia and bougainvillea climbing the walls and a garden with hydrangeas, hibiscus, and herbs that sprawl out to the private sandy beach lined with loungers and parasols at the water's edge. There are two swimming pools (one salt-water and one fresh-water), an open air gym and a kid’s club for the little ones to play; apparently there’s also a resident tortoise roaming the grounds so keep your eyes out for him. On the culinary front, you can chose between three restaurants but the Sardinian Fregula at beachfront Entú e Mari is a must.

Address: Via Romazzino, 4, 07021 Arzachena SS, Italy

Price: From around £1,819 per night.

7 Pines Resort Sardinia, A Destination By Hyatt, Baja Sardinia

Amid the scenic landscapes of Baja Sardinia stands 7 Pines, a large waterfront resort set in 15 hectares of Mediterranean scrub. This is your typical resort; perfect for those seeking a place to unwind and have all commodities at arm's length including the Cone Club, a vibey beach club that pumps music as the sun begins to set. Suitable for all travellers, including families with children, couples and friends who can tailor their stay according to local preferences: while adults indulge in wellness-infused spa days, little ones can play at the Kio House of Kids only to reunite later over a delicious Neapolitan-style pizza at Spazio, the poolside restaurant in collaboration with the pizza master Franco Pepe. The resort's second culinary venue, led by Executive Chef Pasquale D’Ambrosio, offers Mediterranean flavours to savour on a terrace overlooking the sea.

Casa Clat, Cagliari

This charming Cagliari townhouse, one of two hotels in Sardinia to receive a Michelin key, is the result of the skilful renovation of a historical 19th century palazzo near the central landmark Bastion of Saint Remy. The nine suites, each designed in collaboration with local artists, offer a unique collection of artistic expressions, from monochrome themes to motifs inspired by Sardinian textiles, complemented by designer items such as the Antonio Lupi freestanding bathtub in the Isola Suite. There’s a lovely restaurant on the ground floor with an open kitchen that serves refined seafood and vegetable based dishes á la carte or four and five course tasting menu with the option of wine pairing. Wines can also be tasted in the former horse stable, now a stone-walled cellar. During the warmer seasons the garden is the place to be,  with its swimming pool and it’s seated areas for aperitifs and al-fresco dining.

Petra Segreta, San Pantaleo

On the heights of San Pantaleo, catching a glimpse of the Gulf of Arzachena is Petra Segreta, a 27-room hideaway surrounded by glorious nature, miles away from the coastal madness. The address is one of the first of its kind on the island, thought up by architect Rosella Marchese and her husband Chef Luigi Bergeretto over ten years ago. The interiors are designed by Rossella herself, whose eclectic but harmonious style brings together pieces collected throughout her travels world-wide. Most of the rooms, or little stone huts spread across the estate, have private gardens and small pools. Luigi oversees the two restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Il Fuoco Sacro, in consultation with acclaimed chef Enrico Bartolini. A must try is the linguine with black lemon sauce, raw local prawns and bottarga. A hidden gem within the property is also the Balinese hut, hidden among the trees, that's set up for massages. There’s also a separate spa and a small, open air gym near the shared pool.

Gallicantu Stazzo, Luogosanto

An expanse of wild scrub and peculiar geological formations dating back to the Pre-Nuragic era leads the gaze towards a dark silhouette of Corsica which becomes even more spectacular against the ochre sunset sky. This energy is what attracted Golf coach Marco Berio and his partner Raffaella Manca to invest in this abandoned, rural settlement. It took five years to restore the ancient stazzo, the typical Sardinian farmhouse, and create a small village in granite that integrates seamlessly with its surroundings. The interiors, curated by Berio and architect Jean Claude Lesuisse, use reclaimed materials like old church doors and roof tiles repurposed as wall lamps, and reference Sardinian and Gallurese traditions. Although there are only nine rooms, the surrounding space is expansive: aperitifs are enjoyed in the courtyard under the shade of an 800 year old olive tree, wine tasting takes place in an airy cave and home cooked meals are served on a terrace enclosed between granite rocks and holm oak trees that overlook the French neighbours. There is also a swimming pool, a small spa with a sauna, hammocks scattered about, plus the possibility to book a massage.

Aethos Sardinia, Cannigione

What started out as a honeymoon destination soon became a highly sought after location for Benjamin, co-founder of Aethos Hotels, to expand the portfolio as it perfectly matched the company’s philosophy. As their fourth hotel in Italy , following Milan, Saragano in the Umbrian countryside and Monterosa in the Italian Alps, it was fitting to offer travellers a sea-view location that extends out to the Maddalena archipelago, nestled amid the rustic, Sardinian landscapes. Only 30 minutes from Olbia Airport and 20 from Porto Cervo, Aethos Sardegna has a laid-back look and feel that encourages travellers to immerse themselves in the serene, Mediterranean lifestyle. The 57 rooms have been restyled following a design-forward approach whilst staying true to traditional Sardinian architecture. There are also two outdoor swimming pools, a Technogym equipped fitness studio, outdoor treatment cabins and a spa complete with a third pool, sauna and steam room. The culinary highlight is Zaia, centred around sustainable, local produce embracing Mediterranean recipes with a twist: think fermented ingredients, superfoods, herbs, nuts and dried fruits that enhance each dish. This philosophy is present throughout the day, from breakfast (the ginger, lemon and spirulina shot to start the day is genius) through to lunch and dinner including the artfully curated cocktail list.

Cascioni Eco Retreat, Arzachena

Imagine walking along a narrow pebble path that divides an abundance of olive groves and wildflowers to your room dressed in white linen; that’s the mood at Cascioni. All fifteen rooms feature linen curtains, bed throws, and sofas to match this relaxed atmosphere, and are immersed in 18 hectares of Sardinian wilderness. The blessed spot is in the Gallura region up north, nestled amid a natural reserve where a small stream, which you can cross with a guided paddle board experience, leads to the Mediterranean. The farmhouse offers a softer, aesthetic take on traditional countryside dwellings, furnished with natural materials and colours. This essence extends to the cuisine too, which focuses on seasonal, homegrown ingredients or local supplies, reimagined into contemporary Sardinian dishes by the chef. Must-tries include Spaghettoni Coda di Lupo with clams and bottarga, and to finish up, the olive oil ice cream made with the property’s own olive oil. Each room has a private pool but there is also a central, naturally heated swimming pool lined by sun loungers that soak up the shade of the carob trees.

Domu Antiga

Domu Antiga, Gergei

Sensitive soul Samuel Lai is adored by Sardinians and anyone who passes through his four-bedroom guest house. Inside whitewashed walls lie sacred objects: dyed sheep’s wool, antique cheese vats and mazzocchio (shepherd sticks), part of the tender revival of the pastoral idyll Samuel dreamt up while serving in Afghanistan. In 2022 he debuted Sinnos, a natural sheep cheesemaking project. Tastings of his Sa Mola olive oil-sealed pecorino take place in the courtyard garden.

Address: Domu Antiga, Via IV Mori, 08030 Gergei Provincia di Cagliari, Italy

Su Gologone

Su Gologone Experience Hotel, Oliena

Less a rambling hotel than a temple complex worshipping Sardinian pastoral culture, Su Gologone even has a genesis story. In 1967 “Peppeddu” Palimodde opened a rustic food shack in the Nuorese mountains by the sacred spring of Su Gologone. So good was his porchetta that the place soon became a restaurant with rooms, and the rest is history. Under daughter Giovanna, the ever-expanding compound is now a colourful lifestyle concept and art installation, with 68 hand-crafted rooms and museum-worthy collections of Sardinian costumes, ceramics and 20th-century art.

Cala di Volpe, Porto Cervo

This place has been a magnet for A-listers since the 1960s. A cluster of pastel-hued fisherman’s houses with turrets, arches and porticoes built on the water’s edge, it has its own private marina. Inside, the look is cool, Sardinian rustic-chic with design details from local artisans, but that belies a serious level of luxury. There’s a brand-new Shiseido spa , a huge saltwater pool and the sleek Cala Beach Club, a five-minute shuttle boat-hop away. Eating and drinking options include the Barbecue restaurant, popular with celebrities who roll up by boat and jump ashore for a lunch of fishy fregola.

Address: SP160, 07021 Capriccioli SS, Italy

Price: Doubles from about £318

Travel Guide

  • # 1 in Best Beaches in Italy

Sardinia, a 9,301-square-mile island situated in the Mediterranean Sea, just west of the Italian mainland, lures travelers with its unique blend of ancient culture and arresting coastal views. In his travel book "Sea and Sardinia," D.H. Lawrence wrote that "Sardinia is different." And it's true. Not only can you lounge on a white beach or wade out into clear, turquoise waters, but you can enjoy a leisurely pranzo (lunch) complete with Sardinia's own take on pasta and wine. Yes, you can snorkel among colorful fish in nearby coves, but you can also explore inland Sardinia's traditional villages and see shepherds tending to their flocks. The drive along the island's northern  Emerald Coast would convince you that Sardinia is characterized solely by glamorous hotels and ristorantes , and utterly perfect beaches, but you'd be wrong. It's also home to humble farms, forested mountains, and friendly but reserved locals… it's as Lawrence penned, different.

Sardinia at a glance

Sardinia Hotel

The sea, the mountains, the cities, the people, the language and the traditions of an island characterized by the explosive beauty of its natural environment.

Halfway between the coasts of mainland Italy and those of North Africa, Sardinia’s sun-baked beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. Sardinia offers sun and sea – but also a wealth of history. Throughout the centuries this island has been conquered, plundered, colonised. First came the Romans, Vandals, Byzantines , then the Pisans, Genovese, Catalans , followed by Arabs, Spaniards and Italians . Whilst each group of invaders left their mark in impressive works of architecture, nothing can compare with the curious stone constructions built by Sardinia’s native nuraghic civilisation, the remains of some 7000 of which litter the hinterland and fill the museums of Cagliari and Sassari .

3. Best Adults-Only Resort – La Villa del Re Hotel

La Villa del Re Hotel

If you want to be a stone’s throw from the white sand beaches of Costa Rei, then the elegant La Villa del Re Hotel should be on your radar. The rural setting contrasts stunningly with the flawless decor, and its proximity to the Southeast coast means easy access to fun activities like horseback riding along the beach and scuba diving.

To wake up here is to start your day in one of the best beach resorts on the island. The rooms have an understated chic, and the wealth of amenities includes an infinity pool and a small private beach. Peace and quiet are easily achieved no matter where you are on the complex, but there are also bars if you want to let loose.

Most importantly, the guests at the resort will all be on your level, with no excited kids running around the poolside. A perfect spot to unwind.

4. Best Luxury Resort – L’ea Bianca

L'ea Bianca

Although it’s just a 15-minute drive from Port Cervo airport, once you enter the walls of L’ea Bianca the tranquility will make you feel like you’re a million miles from a terminal. The resort’s private cove beach is something special, and even walking there is an idyllic experience thanks to the lush surroundings.

If you’ve come on holiday to switch off then this hotel is perfect. Attentive staff will have you feeling like a VIP, and even if you’re in the self-catered villas you’ll be swaddled in luxury. Suites are on another level, offering fireplaces, gardens, and sea views for those who want that extra touch of class.

If you’re not a sea swimmer but are still keen for a dip, there’s an outdoor pool to dive into. A complimentary breakfast means you can start your day of sightseeing right, but if you’re more of a laze-around kind of traveler, you’ll be able to relax in the garden. Add a gym, spa, hot tub, and sauna, and it’s easy to see why this is considered one of the most luxurious beach resorts in Sardinia.

5. Best Resort for Getting Away From It All – Is Perdas Rural Retreat & Spa

Is Perdas Rural Retreat & Spa

Most resorts in Sardinia are beach-focused, but if you really want to escape the crowds and find tranquility, then Is Perdas Rural Retreat & Spa is your dream destination.

As you approach the resort, the magnificent stone building juts out from its green surroundings, reminiscent of the ancient ruins that make Italy such a fascinating place to visit. But this hotel is anything but outdated: air conditioning and the mountain breeze keep you cool throughout the day and night, and only the highest quality furnishings have been used to decorate.

You can still get to the beach through excursions or if you rent a car. However, being here gives you the opportunity to explore some of the island’s most gorgeous hikes, and that kind of privilege demands to be taken advantage of. The owners are phenomenal, and during a stay here you can feel the love they’ve put into making this one of the best resorts in Sardinia.

6. Best Resort for Beach Access – Villas Resort Hotel

Villas Resort Hotel

Sometimes swimming pools aren’t enough. If you need panoramic views of the Mediterranean and to hear the gentle lap of waves on the shore, then Villas Resort Hotel will be your dream resort.

With multiple beaches within a short walk, you’re never too far from the sparkling sea when you’re staying here. Large, airy rooms keep you cool at night, and there are even some suites with their own hot tubs if you’re keen on a truly opulent experience.

Other amenities inside the hotel include a spa, a kid’s club, and an outdoor pool. With that said, the beach access makes Villa Resort Hotel an ideal choice for those who like to spend their vacations surrounded by sand and sea. Babysitting services are also available, so serenity is never more than a few minutes away with a stay here.

7. Best In-City Resort – Locanda del Buongustaio, Cagliari

Locanda del Buongustaio, Cagliari

Sardinia’s beaches and mountains are a huge part of its charm, but its capital Cagliari is also well worth exploring. With a stay at Locanda del Buongustaio, you can enjoy a memorable trip that’s full of gorgeous architecture, bustling squares, and busy marketplaces.

The beautiful guesthouse sits right in the heart of the city but is also only a short drive from some of the southeast coast’s finest beaches. Foodies will be in heaven, too, as the accommodation has one of the island’s finest seafood restaurants as part of the complex.

Despite being in the center of Sardinia’s thrumming capital, comfortable, stylish furnishings and a tranquil environment make it easy to relax while staying at Locanda del Buongustaio.

8. Best Spa Resort – Resort Valle dell’Erica Thalasso & Spa

Resort Valle dell’Erica Thalasso & Spa

Holidays are about shedding your worries. In heavenly Sardinia that’s easy to accomplish anywhere, but at Resort Valle dell’Erica Thalasso & Spa, it’s practically impossible to not feel like you’re floating on a cloud.

There are actually two hotels in this resort: one more modern and high-end, and the other more in a traditional style. Both ooze luxury, and are within close walking distance of some of Sardinia’s most gorgeous coastline.

Despite the resort’s beautiful design and surroundings, the spa is the star of the show here. There’s a Turkish bath, fitness center, sauna, and 4 saltwater pools, as well as a wealth of massage options.

While letting your worries melt away is a great way to spend your holiday, there are plenty of active pursuits available to guests here, including windsurfing in Porto Pollo and some of the island’s best golf courses in close proximity. Those who want to learn about Sardinia’s history will also only have to take a short journey to the Giant’s grave archaeological site. There really is something for everyone.

9. Best Resort for Breathtaking Views – Hotel Pitrizza, Costa Smeralda

Hotel Pitrizza, Costa Smeralda

Great views aren’t exactly hard to come by in Sardinia, but there are some so stunning that they blow the others out of the water. Hotel Pitrizza on the Costa Smeralda is one of those blessed places.

A short drive from the northern city of Olbia, the resort is conveniently located but feels like its own private island. Rooms offer the chance to unwind with stunning sea views, and even bathing feels like a hedonistic delight thanks to rainfall showers.

The great views aren’t just limited to rooms, with the pool and outdoor seating in the on-site restaurant also being blessed with gorgeous vistas.

Best Resorts in Sardinia Guide

There are plenty of factors to consider while booking your Sardinia vacation, but some aspects of your upcoming holiday are more important than others when it comes to ensuring you have a good time. In this short guide, we’ll give you a list of the most vital things to think about, and how to look out for them.

Hotel Amenities

Sardinian summer can get quite hot, so a room with great ventilation or air conditioning is a must. The vast majority of resorts on the island will be built so the rooms stay cool, but it never hurts to check!

Sometimes it’s nice to spend the day lounging around your resort, so ensuring the in-house restaurants are of a high standard can be useful. With that said, Sardinia is known for its wonderful food culture, and even in the island’s most rugged regions you’re never too far from a great place to eat some of the great local grub.

With so much sea access, the quality of a resort’s swimming pools might not be at the top of your list of things to consider. However, a well-maintained pool set at a comfortable temperature shows that the hotel takes great care of the little things, which can be an indicator of the overall quality of your lodgings.

With that said, beaches on Sardinia can get busy in the summer thanks to the tourists who flock to the island. Hotels with private beaches mean you won’t have to fight for space, so if that’s your priority, make sure you book a resort with that amenity.

Hotel Activities

We’d always recommend exploring Sardinia while you’re on holiday here, but equally, if you are paying for a luxury space, you might be more inclined to spend more time in your resort. Most will put on a wealth of activities, but if there’s something you really want to try, like scuba diving, you should make sure your accommodation provides this opportunity.

Additionally, if you’re traveling with kids, you should check to see if there are amenities like tennis courts they can spend their time on. Younger children can also join kids’ clubs during the vacation, and some resorts even offer babysitting services for adults who want to engage in activities that aren’t so child-friendly.

Most hotels will offer beach excursions and the opportunity to try water sports, but those located in the mountainous interior may only provide things like hiking maps or olive grove tours. Check what’s on offer so you’re not left scrambling while organizing your ideal holiday activities.

Sardinia might be an island, but the roads that connect it can be narrow, mountainous, and windy. As a result, what might normally be a ninety-minute journey on a highway will take almost double that time here. For example, the distance between the two major cities, Olbia and Cagliari, can take almost three hours to drive despite being just over a hundred miles long.

If there are certain beaches or sites you want to visit, you need to make sure they are easily accessible from your accommodation, or you will spend half your day traveling. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing as the island is incredibly beautiful, but it also isn’t the most efficient use of your time. This is especially pressing if you are traveling as a family, as many stretches of road here are relatively barren of amenities.

Although the stunning surroundings of the island might make Sardinia seem like a paradise that’s only accessible to the ultra-wealthy, it has a plethora of reasonably priced options with great amenities. While you shouldn’t expect a high-end spa and idyllic private beach in a mid-range resort, that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank for a dream holiday.

If you do spot a deal that seems too good to be true, check how well the resort measures up in the above categories. You might have been lucky enough to find a great deal, but more often than not you’ll be sacrificing some other element of your holiday for cost. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it is something to take into account.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where is the best place to stay in sardinia.

This really depends on what you want. If you’re a beach person, then the southern and northeastern coasts are the best. If you want isolation, the center of the island or the west coast will be better.

Do I need a car in Sardinia?

To get the most out of Sardinia a car is probably needed. However, there are countless beach tours, guided hikes, and sightseeing group trips available on the island, so a car-free vacation can still be filled with excitement.

Is Sardinia family-friendly?

Yes! Italian culture is big on family, and the country’s second-largest island is no different. With that said, there are some beaches and attractions that aren’t very easy to navigate with a buggy, so keep that in mind.

Is Sardinia accessible for those with disabilities?

Generally speaking, Sardinia has plenty of accessible activities and highlights, and most of the higher-end resorts will be able to make the needed accommodations for those with disabilities. However, wheelchair users may struggle with uneven pavements and narrow roads that aren’t so accommodating to vehicles equipped with the necessary equipment. Make sure to do your due diligence if you have accessibility needs.

Do you need to speak Italian in Sardinia?

Speaking the local language is always a bonus when visiting a country, but Sardinia is very well developed from a tourism standpoint, and most people you interact with will have a good level of English. Plus, many residents prefer to speak Sardinian (or Sard), the local language, over Italian.

No matter whether you’re looking for a beach escape, an active trip to the mountains, or to feed your inner culture vulture, you’ll be able to do so in Sardinia. However, the island’s size and diversity mean that you need to pick a resort that will cater to your needs, otherwise, the time you should be spending relaxing might get eaten up by organizing your days.

Thankfully, Sardinia offers everything from your dream family resort to hotels that feel like desert island getaways. All you need to do is pick the right one, and you’re sure to have an unforgettable vacation on this truly beautiful island.

About Sardinia

Sardinia’s beaches are spectacular: the sand is soft, and the water is a shade of aqua usually reserved for the tropics. But there’s a lot to be said for Sardinia’s wild interior as well, lush forests open out onto limestone bays, vineyards and olive groves, or prehistoric ruins. It’s a bit like a tiny country, so when we set about selecting the best places to stay on Sardinia, the lists of accommodation recommendations seem as varied as a country’s. There's the glamorous luxury hotels of the North East coast, converted estates in the hills, family-friendly resort villages, traditional Sardinian seaside hotels, spa retreats , and a number of really excellent B&Bs .

If you’re looking forward to sampling Sardinia’s beaches we have recommendations all the way around the island , but we also think that Sardinia is a great destination for foodies, families, walkers, divers, horse riders — anyone looking for a destination that’s small, sunny and culturally rich! Sardinia’s eventful history has born independent traditions of art, craft and architecture, along with unique flavours in the food and wine. It also has a number of fascinating archaeological sites, and some excellent history museums.

Some of the best places to stay on Sardinia are found in the island’s main centres: from Olbia , ferry port and gateway to the Costa Smerelda; to lively Iglesias with its Catalan charms; elegant Oristano with its boutiques and fine restaurants - perfect for Sardinian honeymoons ; and Caligari and Bosa with their incredible Medieval architecture. And if you’re looking for something quite unique, consider staying on Sant'Antioco and San Pietro, these are islands just off Sardinia’s south west coast, and are probably the best destinations if you’re looking for an ‘authentic’ Sardinian experience.

Explore the best hotels in Sardinia

For a special occasion.

  • Luxurious and intimate, the Hotel Pitrizza ’s collection of rooms, suites and private villas is many people’s idea of the perfect honeymoon hotel. Not too big, but not too small, its expansive terraces, with incredible sea views, offer a myriad of opportunities for dreamy moments, and if you opt to stay in a villa you can have your own private pool and terrace too. The larger villas, those with two and three bedrooms, are ideal for families and groups too. There are three restaurants (an Italian restaurant, a barbecue restaurant, and a fine dining option), plus a number of bars, and a really beautiful stretch of private, golden beach.

For Romantics

  • La Villa del Re is a five star pick right on the ocean on Sardinia’s spectacular south coast between Costa Dei and Sant’ Elmo. This is a charmingly traditional looking property, constructed from the local stone, with exposed beams and stone floors, but decorated with creamy colours and a subtle nautical theme. It’s very much as if you’re a guest in a very lucky family friend’s summer home, complete with welcoming communal areas, a beautiful pool with a sea view, and fragrant gardens. Adults only.
  • L'Agnata di de Andre is a country retreat built by Italian musician, Fabrizio De Andre. Now charmingly vine covered, the villa is romantically laid out, with ten very private feeling rooms, decorated in traditional style and a restaurant serving four course set menu dinners. There’s also a huge lagoon pool, fragrant gardens, and hammocks and sun loungers arranged invitingly around the grounds. Perfect for switching off.

For the Views

  • The Hotel Relais Villa del Golfo & Spa perches on the edge of the stunning Bay of Cannigione, close to La Maddalena Archipelago National Park and its pristine coastline, so its views are incredible. And if you want the view all to yourself there are plenty of rooms and suites among the hotel’s 59 with their own private terraces. Or you could book up the hotel’s private yacht… Spacious and verdant, the grounds include a huge pool — there’s another inside — plus a spa, with sauna and hot tubs.
  • The Hotel Villa Las Tronas is breathtakingly positioned on the rocky tip of a sandy cove, with almost 360 degree sea views. It looks like a small Italian castle, boxy, with large windows, and its 18 rooms and suites all have incredible views too. All the rooms are grand, some of them more traditional than others, but all share the excellent seafood restaurant, a spa and wellness centre, and a swimming pool overlooking the water. Romantic, but still family friendly.
  • La Coluccia is a chicly designed hotel on the north coast, with sea views, a private beach, and 45 rooms, suites and private villas. The hotel offers a great blend of traditional Sardinian style and contemporary design and comfort, with a focus on quality and simplicity. There’s a spa and gym, a pool with a view, and it’s a short walk to the hotel’s private beach, where you can snorkel, as well as swim, and relax. There are plenty of watersports facilities on offer nearby, plus horse riding and golf too.

For a Beach Break

  • Forte Village is a collection of luxurious hotels and villas, along a near-perfect stretch of sandy beach, and bright turquoise ocean. The wonderful thing about staying in the village is the huge range of choice in accommodation, from single rooms, to huge private villas surrounded by their own gardens. The village has 21 dining options, and a raft of activities on offer, from football coaching, to diving and snorkelling, to cooking classes.
  • The Hotel Sporting is idyllically located beside its own stretch of white sandy beach, bookended with rocky coves, but it’s also just moments from Porto Rondo. Its 47 rooms, suites and villas start from a very affordable price point. All are simple, light and airy, and the best are also spacious, with their own private balconies and incredible sea views. This is a great hotel if you’re looking for amenities; there are tennis courts, a gym and spa, and easy access to a golf club, and all sorts of watersports facilities.

For a Rural Escape

  • Peaceful and rustic, the Petra Segreta is a truly elegant escape, with a fabulous spa in caves carved into the hillside, a gourmet restaurant, a lovely pool and spectacular views of the Gulf of Arzachena and Sardinia’s islands. Accommodation is spread between a number of rustic buildings perched on a hillside, and within are 22 rooms and two suites — the suites have private pools, and many of the rooms have private terraces. The decor is warm and earthy, peaceful, even. Yet you’re only a few kilometres from glamorous Porto Cervo.
  • The Spartivento Hotel is a small eco-friendly resort in the hills behind Chia’s beaches, where you have panoramic views of the Mediterranean. The hotel has 27 rooms and suites, decorated with simple, Sardinian style, and the restaurant has a very Sardinian menu. If the weather is favourable, and it very often is, you can eat on the terrace overlooking the sea. There’s a lovely pool, with a children’s area, and there are plenty of rooms that sleep three and four.
  • The Albero Capovolto is a relaxed B&B in Olbia’s picturesque rural hinterland. It has just five guest rooms, plus some lovely indoor and outdoor communal areas. There’s also a very nice pool. We love the traditional feeling decor: exposed stone, exposed beams and tiled floors. Dinner is on request (it’s a car journey to other local restaurants), and it's about 20 minutes to a number of beautiful beaches. Great for romantics, and groups who can take over the whole property.

For Foodies

  • The Hotel Su Gologone is an elegant, very Sardinian hotel, built on the grounds of a working olive estate and vineyard. Olive groves, vineyards, and bougainvillea surround the hotel’s numerous terraces, and the restaurant’s menu is largely sourced from the grounds and kitchen gardens. The 15 rooms and 54 suites are traditional in style, and decorated with original artworks and luxurious fabrics. As you can imagine, the wine cellars and restaurant are excellent. The hotel offers an exciting range of classes based not only on local cuisine, but on local handicrafts too.

For Families

  • Ollastu is an expansive resort complex in a beautiful, rural setting, just to the south of Olbia, with its own private beach and wonderful ocean views. The 54 rooms, suites and apartments are designed to be reminiscent of Sardinian shepherds’ huts, set amongst idyllic natural surrounds and landscaped gardens. It'g a great option both for families, and couples: there’s plenty of family-centric activity on offer, but the way the hotel is spaced out, and the two restaurants, means it’s easy to avoid any noise or activity. Plus there’s a private beach, and access to horse riding, golf and sailing facilities.
  • For family friendly facilities on the Costa Smeralda, try the Hotel Cala di Volpe : architecturally memorable, with traditional elements and all the mod cons, this hotel has a real wealth of activities on offer, and is positioned just behind a beautiful white, sandy beach. The kids club hosts those between three and 12, or you can try a new watersport as a family, go sailing, play tennis, play in the pool, or relax on the beach. There’s also a gym and spa, and a choice of restaurants that includes a barbecue restaurant that non-residents travel for.

For Great Value

  • The Hotel Panorama is right in the centre of Olbia, with wonderful views of the sea and plenty of ferry port action, from the roof top bar and lounge deck. Its 80 rooms and suites are simply and traditionally decorated. The family suites sleep four, and can be divided up into two private spaces, or left open plan. There’s no restaurant, but they offer breakfast, and there are some lovely places to eat and drink within a pleasant walking distance.
  • The Nascar Hotel is a good option if you're travelling with your family or a group and you want to stay somewhere comfy by the beach — in this case in the centre of a small village, just 200 meters from the beach. There are only ten rooms, but they’re all a generous size, with simple decor. The family rooms comfortably sleep four, and some of the larger rooms have private terraces. The restaurant serves an excellent local menu, and the location is right at the foot of the spectacular "Wild Blue" walking trail, so this is also a great choice for hikers.

Travel Information

  • Sardinia has three airports: Cagliari Airport , which is seven kilometres from Cagliari, Sardinia’s largest city; Alghero Airport , which is ten kilometres northwest of Alghero; and Olbia Airport , which is about four kilometres from the centre of Olbia on the Costa Smeralda. But you might find it easier to arrive by ferry, and Sardinia has a number of ferry ports too: Cagliari’s port is right in front of the old town; Olbia also has a ship and ferry terminal just a short bus or taxi ride from the centre of town; and if you’re cruising or sailing in to Alghero you’ll dock at Porto Torres, an industrial centre about 22 kilometres north of town.
  • If you want to hire a car — which we advise if you plan to explore the island — we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars .
  • Sardinia’s Mediterranean climate means long, warm summers and short, mild winters, with most of the rain sandwiched between. It is known for being windy too, and in some regions humid; in fact, for a small island, Sardinia has a number of microclimates. But generally speaking most of Sardinia is a pleasant destination almost year round. From the start of spring it starts to get pretty sunny, though of course summer is the most popular time to visit, when the water is warm, and temperatures are in the mid-twenties. The temperature averages 18°C in October, so if you prefer a quieter holiday then early autumn is a good time to visit.

Still not sure where to stay?

  • You could refine your search to just the dazzling beauty of the Costa Smerelda which runs from easily accessed Olbia to the Golf di Arzachena ?

Best Luxury Hotels In Sardinia

This Italian island lies in the sea space between Sicily and Corsica. It’s well known, yet off the mainstream budget flight path, so attracts a more discerning traveller. Loved for its beautiful beaches and crystal clear Mediterranean shores, Sardinia can also be rugged and wild, depending on which area you visit. And it is this variety of landscape and holiday experiences that draws many. It may be part of Italy, but the food here is unique. The island has its own national dish, Pecora in cappotto, a type of mutton stew. Su Porcheddu, a spit-roasted pork, popular in the countryside is also well worth a try.

The very best Sardinia hotels for the perfect island break this summer

Our favourite Sardinia hotels to check into this year, from historic hideaways to family-friendly resorts

best hotels in sardinia

The Italian island has lots of charming places to stay – and these are the very best hotels in Sardinia, whether you’re in search of a sunny seaside resort or a family-owned retreat that’s been run by the same clan for generations.

BEST HOTELS IN SARDINIA

Sardinia is the second-biggest island in the Mediterranean (after Sicily), with almost 2,000 kilometres of coastline. Away from its sandy beaches, the interior is mountainous, making it a dream destination for hikers. Like other islands in the Med, such as Malta , Crete and Mallorca , Sardinia is the perfect place for a sun-kissed escape and is home to a whole host of fabulous hotels, which we've rounded up below.

Around the island, Costa Smeralda in the north is famous for its emerald-coloured waters and the glitzy town of Porto Cervo, popular with the jet-set since the early Sixties, when it was established by a prince seeking a holiday playground. In the capital, Cagliari, cultural highlights include the walled medieval castello , a 13th-century cathedral and an archaeological museum housing Roman ceramics and Byzantine treasures.

In the south of the Italian island, Il Castello is a hotel within the holiday playground that is the Forte Village Resort, where sports fans can practise their skills at one of the regular academies, and there are endless eating and drinking options.

Or for a historic hideaway, book a stay at Hotel Lucrezia in the village of Rialo Sardo, Antica Locanda Lunetta in the comune of Mandas, or San Francesco Heritage Hotel in the walled medieval city of Alghero.

Film lovers heading for the sparkling Costa Smeralda will want to check into Hotel Cala di Volpe . The luxury hotel, which is more like a village, featured in 1977 Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me.

These are our favourite Sardinia hotels for a Mediterranean island getaway…

Hotel Cala di Volpe, Costa Smeralda

best hotels in sardinia

On one of the most romantic stretches of the Costa Smeralda, Hotel Cala di Volpe is high on our list of the best hotels in Sardinia for a few good reasons. It resembles an old-fashioned, charming fishing village, with sandy-coloured typical Sardinian houses, ceramic tiles and private terraces for you to enjoy the breathtaking views of land and sea. The glamorous hotel has also appeared on the big screen in the 1977 Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, making it the perfect spot for lovers of vintage Hollywood.

You could easily spend your entire holiday here, as there's plenty to help you while away the days. There are several restaurants and bars, including a Matsuhisa outpost, and Beefbar Cala di Volpe, which serves up high-end street food and enormous steaks (it's best to arrive hungry). The impressive swimming pool, one of the largest saltwater pools in the Mediterranean, is the place to have a dip and sunbathe. There's also a luxurious Shiseido Spa, four tennis courts and two padel courts.

Il Castello, Pula

best hotels in sardinia

At the highest point of Sardinia’s Forte Village, the five-star Il Castello has access to the resort’s vast array of facilities, which include 120 acres of gardens, several swimming pools, a piazza to shop at, a whole range of sports academies and enough dining options to keep you busy for a fortnight (in total, there are a staggering 21 restaurants and 14 bars). These include a pizzeria of course, along with a restaurant celebrating cuisine from Emilia-Romagna further north in Italy, a restaurant by star chef Heinz Beck and a grill serving the highest quality meats from Italy, Ireland and Australia. The sunny Sardinia stay is a short drive south of Cagliari (and its handy airport), with the beach a few steps away, as well as a Med-facing infinity pool. Families will love the bungalows in the gardens, or you can book a room with a view of the sea served straight to your terrace.

Romazzino, a Belmond Hotel, Costa Smeralda

best hotels in sardinia

Some of the finest hotels in Italy are part of the esteemed Belmond collection, including Grand Hotel Timeo over in Sicily, and Splendido Mare in Portofino. Continuing the tradition is Hotel Romazzino , which translates as 'Hotel Rosemary', a herb that grows in abundance the full length of the Costa Smeralda. Sitting between emerald waters and an aromatic Mediterranean garden, this gorgeous hotel is a must-visit for wellness and spa lovers, with its endless sports and leisure facilities that take in the incredible views of the sea and surrounding landscape. These include an outdoor fitness centre, a yoga studio, the Rosemary Wellness & Spa and a saltwater swimming pool.

Room options include three- and five-bedroom villas that are inspired by traditional Sardinian villages and allow for privacy while inviting you to enjoy everything the hotel has to offer – from Sardinian cuisine at La Terrasse to a night cap at Bar Ginepro with a soundtrack of some late-night piano music.

Conrad Chia Laguna Sardinia, Domus de Maria

best hotels in sardinia

Its miles of beautiful beaches make this island a brilliant choice for families, and many of the best hotels in Sardinia offer all sorts of facilities for younger guests. So if you're in search of a family-friendly resort in Sardinia or a hotel with plenty to keep you entertained for the duration of your stay, look no further. Overlooking Chia Bay in the island’s south, Conrad Chia Laguna is just an hour’s drive from the capital of Cagliari. In addition to its award-winning golden beaches, the resort has lots of facilities to ensure guests of every generation stay busy, including a spa, a tennis court, an array of watersports and lots of restaurants and bars to work through. Of the latter, the highlight is undoubtedly Bar Bollicine, which specialises in all things fizzy – and you’ll be able to drink your sparkling wine while sitting on its panoramic terrace. And at the spa, guests can enjoy Turkish baths and Rasul mud treatments.

Su Gologone, Oliena

best hotels in sardinia

For something peaceful away from the flashier international resorts, look no further than this charming stay on the eastern side of the island. At Su Gologone , authentic Italian food cooked by nonnas awaits guests at its Bread Nest (officially: Nido del Pane ). Here, you'll watch Sardinian women, dressed in typical Oliena costumes, making bread the way islanders have been for centuries. In fact, the entire hotel is a love letter to Sardinia, whether it's the locally made artworks, the traditional fabrics or the woodwork carved on the island. Some of the rooms have a terrace with a view of the herb garden, along with an outdoor hot tub and a hammock to really appreciate Sardinia’s great outdoors. It offers guests a chance to see a different side to the island – instead of the glitzy coast, you'll be in the heart of the rugged Barbagia area.

Cervo Hotel, Costa Smeralda

best hotels in sardinia

Designed with pink stone and whimsical pastel architecture, Cervo Hotel overlooks the famous Piazzetta of Porto Cervo. Where other hotels are situated a little along the coast, offering serene evenings and peaceful days, this luxury address is deeply connected to the original heritage of Porto Cervo, right at the epicentre of the town, ready for when it comes to life each summer.

A meeting point for both locals and explorers who want to experience the lively village atmosphere, the hotel is just a short walk from the marina and Cervo Tennis Club, plus the town's best shopping and nightlife. Not that you need to venture far to dine out: Novikov Porto Cervo and Quattro Passi al Pescatore are two of the most popular restaurants in the hotel, with the former serving up its signature Asian fusion cuisine, and the latter offering menus designed in partnership with three-Michelin-starred restaurant Quattro Passi near Sorrento.

Antica Locanda Lunetta, Mandas

best hotels in sardinia

Lots of the best hotels in Sardinia are big resorts with lots of bells and whistles, but the island is also home to smaller-scale stays that are just as tempting, especially if you're in search of the Mediterranean's famous slower pace of life. This charming bed and breakfast is in the comune of Mandas in southern Sardinia. It was built in the 17th century and, after a stint as a post station, it’s now a characterful inn. The country house is on the hills of Trexenta in the centre of what was once a Spanish duchy. Family-run Antica Locanda Lunetta is full of souvenirs and stories passed down through the generations – the current custodians’ great-grandparents Calogero and Dondina Lunetta welcomed DH Lawrence and his wife Frieda when they travelled to Sardinia in 1921. Modern-day guests can choose between the rooms in the ancient house, which feature sandstone walls, beamed ceilings and tiled floors, and the garden suites, which are located in the estate's former stables.

Hotel Aquadulci, Domus De Maria

best hotels in sardinia

Also in the south of Sardinia and close to one of its best beaches (and its many quiet coves), Hotel Aquadulci in Chia Bay has 41 rooms. Helping guests to feel even better are the spa in the garden, which offers treatments that use homegrown medicinal plants such as myrtle and lavender, and the palm-lined pool on the edge of the lagoon, surrounded by palm trees and sunloungers.

The food served at the restaurant is simple but wholesome, with local ingredients put to good use, such as lobsters from the island comune of Sant’Antioco, smoked ham from Villagrande, tomatoes from Pula and bottarga from Cabras.

Chia Bay is the ultimate beach destination, with towering dunes that are backed by juniper bushes, surfer-ready waves and a crystal-clear sea. Appropriately enough, the name translates as ‘sweet water’, which was once the name of the region.

Gabbiano Azzurro, Golfo Aranci

best hotels in sardinia

A little south of the Costa Smeralda, but with equally white sand and just as turquoise water, Golfo Aranci is a peninsula near Olbia, known for its steep cliffs and natural beauty. A short stroll from its namesake fishing village, Gabbiano Azzuro has been run by the Datome family since 1968.

Breakfast is served each morning on the sea-facing terrace, and you'll only have to move as far as the beach for your next meal. For dinner, head to Blu Restaurant in time for sunset. The restaurants and pizzerias of Golfo Aranci will be within strolling distance, too, so it's an ideal hotel in Sardinia for guests who like to get out and about to experience the local nightlife and culture. There are suites with private pools on their decks that seemingly merge into the sea, and the hotel has its own beach at the edge of the lagoon. This is one of the best areas in Sardinia for snorkelling and scuba-diving, and the natural reserve of Capo Figari is nearby.

Hotel Abi d'Oru, Porto Rotondo

best hotels in sardinia

It isn't hard to see why Sardinia has been a popular holiday destination for decades. Another hotel on the island with a glamorous, Golden Age past is Abi d’Oru , a five-star retreat that has been welcoming guests since the Sixties. The storied stay is in Porto Rotondo, an elegant town with a marina. There’s lots to keep you busy within this beach-edge resort, starting with three restaurants and as many bars, which include a seafood restaurant on the sand and a Mediterranean option with a terrace overlooking the water. Activities on offer include sailing trips over to La Maddalena islands, windsurfing, scuba-diving and stand-up paddleboarding, along with hiking the trails of the Capo Figari reserve. Within the resort, there’s a tennis court and a spa with a couples’ treatment room that has a hot tub beneath a canopy in its garden. We feel relaxed just thinking about it.

Hotel Lucrezia, Oristano

best hotels in sardinia

Many of the best hotels in Sardinia are shiny contemporary resorts, but there are plenty of options on offer for fans of a more classic decor, too. And if you like your hotels to feel more like staying at a friend’s house, you’ll love Hotel Lucrezia , which has enough trinkets and treasures to seem like a private residence – and one with an owner that has great taste. The hotel’s namesake was the hostess of the house from 1895 up until 1934, and her great-great-grandchildren are ensuring it is just as homely and welcoming today. There’s a garden with a courtyard, and a suite that once housed the oil press and millstone. It’s in the village of Riola Sardo, a few miles inland from Sardinia’s western shores. A short drive south is the city of Oristano, which is a little off the beaten track – here, you'll be able to explore the pretty piazzas, lively cafés and attractive architecture.

Hotel Villa Fanny, Cagliari

best hotels in sardinia

Of course, many visitors to Sardinia are here for the dazzling coastline, but if you're in search of a city stay rather than a beach-front resort, this boutique hotel is the ideal option. In a residential area close to the centre of Cagliari, Hotel Villa Fanny is surrounded by gorgeous, peaceful gardens. There are just 19 bedrooms within this art nouveau villa, which was named, in case you're wondering who Fanny is, for the matriarch of a prominent Sardinian family. Each has inimitably Italian stylish interiors that feature wooden beams and trusses, stone walls and lots of bright, breezy white accents. The staff at the boutique hotel will be able to craft your dream island itinerary, whether you want to discover the most beautiful beaches in the south, tour the coves by speedboat or learn all about Cagliari’s history. Cultural highlights to see in the island's capital include a basilica, a cathedral and an archaeological museum, as well as, of course, the famous hilltop citadel, Il Castello.

7Pines Resort Sardinia, Baja Sardinia

sardinia hotels

This spacious resort, close to the island’s fabled Costa Smeralda, arrived a couple of summers ago, in time for the princely holiday playground’s 60th anniversary in 2022. It took over a prime piece of real estate on Sardinia’s north-eastern shores (holiday homes here sell for eye-watering sums). The grounds feature various coves and beaches, including a setting that proved the perfect backdrop for the hotel’s Cone Club by the water’s edge, which is the ideal place to spend a sunny summer’s day. There are more laid-back dining options at 7Pines Sardinia , which is part of the Destination by Hyatt collection, including a poolside lunch spot. But for extra indulgence, don’t miss sea-facing Capogiro, which serves a delicious tasting menu, the somewhat surprising star of which is the elaborate selection of breads served at the start. It is an almost impossible feat to resist it in order to not spoil your appetite.

Gallicantu Stazzo Retreat, Luogosanto

sardinia hotels

If you want to dip in and out of the glamorous Costa Smeralda, rather than immerse yourself fully in it, Gallicantu Stazzo Retreat near Luogosanto is the ideal Sardinia hotel. The rustic retreat is formed from a series of old stables (hence stazzo ), which have been meticulously restored by the owner, a former professional golfer who is more than happy to take guests out for lessons. There are live jazz nights and barbecues during the summer, freshly baked breakfasts and table d'hot e -style nightly suppers. And when the glitz of the coast is calling, the jet-set-favoured emerald shores are only a half hour’s drive away, with this peaceful rural idyll awaiting you on your return. It really is the best of both worlds, and the owner's passion for his project is heartwarmingly evident.

Petra Segreta, San Pantaleo

sardinia hotels

Charming San Pantaleo is a pretty town that’s close to Porto Cervo, for when you want a little more bustle (or to admire some super-yachts). In the hills and forests surrounding it, you’ll find Petra Segreta , which is a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux collection and one of the very best hotels in Sardinia. The peaceful resort enjoys incredible views from its lofty vantage point. There’s the Michelin-starred Il Fuoco Sacro restaurant, along with a more traditional osteria and a terrace so that you can admire the panoramic perfection on show as you dine. As though the surrounding scenery wasn’t tonic enough, the resort has a spa in a thatched hut, where guests can book in for ayurvedic treatments, yoga classes and hammams. It's the perfect holiday combination of relaxation, great food and the beach in reach.

Hotel Pitrizza, Costa Smeralda

best hotels in sardinia

For a hotel that knows how to celebrate its natural surroundings, look no further than Hotel Pitrizza . It's ideal for travellers who seek privacy and uninterrupted views, offering precisely that: privacy in pristine nature. The hotel – which is located in one of the most secluded parts of the island – is made up of romantic rooms and discreet villas that overlook the glittering bay.

Hotel Pitrizza is also home to what is said to be the first infinity pool in the history of hospitality and one that is truly unique. The saltwater pool is carved into the rocks below and scented by the aromas of hibiscus, juniper and the surrounding olive trees. For the utmost privacy, opt for a two- or three-bedroom villa – these come with their own private heated pool so you won't have to venture very far for a swim.

Albero Capovolto, Golfo Aranci

sardinia hotels

Live the good life at Albero Capovolto , a family-run boutique hotel in the Gallura countryside, near the fishing village of Golfo Aranci and the town of Olbia in the island’s north-east. The name means ‘upside-down tree’, chosen to give guests an indication of the family roots at the rural retreat’s heart. It won't take you long to fall into a relaxed pace, especially after a swim in the peaceful pool, which is surrounded by olive trees and perfumed plants. After a day spent reposing in the gorgeous grounds, guests can partake in the Italian tradition of aperitivo – the tipples of choice are sourced from wineries, distilleries and breweries in Sardinia, and are accompanied by locally made cheese and charcuterie, and vegetables from the kitchen garden.

Baia di Chia Resort Sardinia, Curio Collection by Hilton, Domus de Maria

best hotels in sardinia

In the south of the island, within the Chia Laguna resort, Baia di Chia Resort Sardinia, Curio Collection by Hilton is the Sardinian hotel for you if you’re in search of an adults-only retreat. This peaceful stay overlooks a lagoon and Monte Cogoni beach, a beautiful bay with golden sand and turquoise water. The latter is home to a beach club, which is the perfect destination for whiling away the days, sun-worshipping on a lounger or shade-seeking in a gazebo. There are cabanas, too, for poolside spa treatments. When the heat cools off a little, walk up the ‘Stairway to Nature’ path for spectacular sea views and sundowners, or even a romantic dinner and some stargazing. And if you’re hoping to bring along older kids or grandkids, over-16s will be welcome.

Hotel Village, Domus de Maria

best hotels sardinia

And for when you do want to bring the whole clan along, Chia Laguna is also home to Hotel Village , which is one of the best family hotels in Sardinia and perfect for all generations of your nearest and dearest. Especially well catered to are the younger guests, with a newly renovated kids’ club opening this summer. Parents will be able to make the most of those long, European summer nights, since the crèche stays open until 11pm – while the kids are kept entertained, the grown-ups can explore the rest of the resort and its various restaurants and bars. Other facilities at the hotel include a cinema, and the activities on offer range from wind-surfing to horse-riding, via football with Juventus FC, capoeira, yoga and fencing.

San Francesco Heritage Hotel, Alghero

best hotels in sardinia

If you like your hotels to have a historic backdrop, San Francesco , set within a 14th-century cloister, is the Sardinia stay for you. Alghero is the one of most picturesque medieval destinations on the island – and if you want to explore its ancient walls and cobblestoned centre, book a stay at this centuries-old retreat. The heritage hotel is close to St John Tower and the Coral Museum (as well as its antiquities, the city is also known for its red coral). The property is near Alghero's bustling Piazza Civica as well as the port, but you won’t need to travel far to appreciate some history, since you can explore the original cloister and courtyard right here at the hotel first.

Where to Stay in Sardinia: Our Favourite Luxury Hotels

travel and leisure sardinia hotels

Published on: July 1st, 2024

Last updated: July 1st, 2024

Italy is positively packed with tempting destinations, and one of our favourite, slightly unsung heroes, is the stunning island of Sardinia . Perhaps that’s because it has an identity all its own, reflecting the distinctive cultural legacy that has developed here over the centuries. Whatever the reason, it would be a shame to overlook this sunny isle.

Beyond show-stopping beaches, striking cities and ancient heritage, you’ll also find plenty of fantastic accommodation here. The best area to stay in Sardinia depends on your priorities; secluded mountain oases, serene seaside retreats and family-friendly resorts are scattered across the island, with each area offering its own mix of cultural charm and natural beauty.

To help you decide where to stay in Sardinia, we’ve put together the following list of our favourite hotels and resorts in this Mediterranean paradise.

Su Gologone Experience Hotel

1. Su Gologone Experience Hotel

The Barbagia region is sometimes described as the cultural core of Sardinia, and not just because it’s literally in the island’s centre. Featuring some of its most enchanting villages, impressive peaks and important historical sites, the region is a fitting location for Su Gologone Experience Hotel : one of the best hotels in Sardinia for lovers of food, art and culture.

This place was originally a renowned restaurant serving traditional Sardinian fare, and has been progressively expanded to offer a selection of cosy rooms and suites – each with its own distinct decor and ambience. Although it’s situated in the interior, the hotel is only a half-hour drive from the turquoise waters of the island’s eastern coast.

2. Petra Segreta

Located close to the glittering Costa Smeralda – known for its gorgeous beaches and ultra-luxe  atmosphere –  Petra Segreta is a sophisticated rural retreat. Its suites are tastefully decorated with light wood and neutral earth tones, creating a sense of serenity that’s further enhanced by private pools and sunny terraces with sweeping panoramic views.

There are plenty of options for activities to keep you busy here, from forest trails and hidden caves to beach days and boat trips to nearby islands. You can also enjoy three different dining options, one of which has a well-earned Michelin star, as well as rejuvenating wellness treatments at the resort’s Balinese-inspired spa.

3. Baglioni Resort Sardinia

For some of the best food and wine that the island has to offer, head to Baglioni Resort Sardinia on the northeastern coast. In addition to its proximity to the Vermentino di Gallura wine region – the only one in Sardinia with the prestigious DOCG designation – this resort has an extensive wine collection and an excellent Michelin-starred restaurant.

Baglioni Resort Sardinia is set within the highly biodiverse Tavolara Marine Reserve, which boasts the beautiful white-sand beach of Lu Impostu. Its 78 rooms and suites offer perks like panoramic terraces, private gardens and plenty of space for families or groups of friends (the largest can accommodate up to six people). There’s also a kids’ club for children ages 3–12.

7Pines Resort Sardinia

4. 7Pines Resort Sardinia

If sand and sun are your primary priorities, 7Pines Resort Sardinia is the place for you. This is one of our favourite beach resorts in Sardinia , close to the Costa Smeralda in the lovely town of Baja Sardinia. The hotel has its own tranquil beach with wonderfully clear waters, and the surrounding area is ideal for scuba diving or snorkelling.

The rooms and suites at 7Pines Resort are divided into three groups: the verdant Gardens, the adults-only Laguna and the beachfront Sea Views. Each of them promises contemporary design and relaxing outdoor spaces, whether you opt for a private rooftop terrace or direct access to the pool. Make sure to check out each of the four secret coves hidden around the resort as well.

7Pines Resort Sardinia

5. Abi d’Oru Beach Hotel

One of the larger luxury hotels in Sardinia , Abi d’Oru Beach Hotel is a phenomenal choice for all types of travellers – but it’s especially well-suited to families. Set right on the sand in the idyllic Golfo de Marinella, it has everything you need for a truly relaxing trip that every family member will remember forever.

Adults can lounge on the beach, unwind in the spa or indulge at one of the three restaurants and three bars, while the little ones have the time of their lives at the ‘Bee Happy’ Kids’ Club. There are different activities for children of all ages, as well as a special kids’ menu at the main restaurant. Teenagers, meanwhile, can sign up for water sports like windsurfing and sailing.

Forte Village Resort Sardinia

6. Forte Village Resort

The name of Forte Village Resort is no coincidence; it really is an entire village, with 8 different hotels, 13 villas, 21 restaurants, an organic garden, a thalassotherapy spa and so much more. It’s also one of the best hotels in Sardinia for kids , with its own water park, a children’s restaurant and two special areas for kids and teens, respectively: Wonderland and Leisureland.

Forte Village is located on Sardinia’s southern coast, close to the scenic seaside village of Chia. It’s right between the capital, Cagliari, and the intriguing islands of Sant’Antioco and San Pietro off the southwestern coast. If you can pull yourself away from the endless array of things to do at the resort, either of the above would make for a marvellous day trip.

7. Cascioni Eco Retreat

Sometimes you just need to get away from it all and immerse yourself in unspoilt nature – complemented, of course, by nourishing cuisine and creature comforts. That’s exactly what’s on the menu at Cascioni Eco Retreat : an exclusive escape in the countryside of Gallura, Sardinia’s northernmost region.

Cascioni Eco Retreat has just 15 carefully decorated suites with rustic details, private gardens and swimming pools. The surrounding landscape is full of wildflowers and olive trees, and the beach is only a few minutes’ drive away. Explore the nearby nature trails and archaeological sites, step aboard the resort’s luxury yacht or sign up for a cooking class or crafts workshop.

The best one-week Sardinia itinerary

Planning the perfect one-week sardinia road trip.

Rugged, sun-drenched coastlines , prehistoric ruins, and some of the Mediterranean's most pristine beaches – Sardinia is a great place to explore. A week-long road trip is the perfect way to experience this unique island. Here’s our favorite way to spend a week in Sardinia:

Day 1: Cagliari

The first day of this Sardinia itinerary starts at the Cagliari Airport, where you will pick up your rental car. Start by exploring Caligaria , the island's capital that's equal parts medieval charm and modern Mediterranean with a history spanning over 2,000 years. Here you’ll find lively piazzas and narrow streets that are great for exploring.

Start your day with a walk through the historic Castello district. Here you can visit the Bastione di Saint Remy, a limestone fortification that offers panoramic views of the city and the sea. Make sure to also see the nearby Cattedrale di Santa Maria, a 13th-century cathedral featuring a unique blend of Pisan-Romanesque and Baroque architecture.

Day 2: Costa Rei

After breakfast, you'll set off on a scenic 1-hour drive east to Costa Rei, enjoying some stunning coastal views along the way. This area is famous for its pristine beaches, but there’s much more to explore. Start your day at the Scoglio di Peppino, a distinctive rock formation that's become a symbol of Costa Rei. From there, you can take a short hike to the Torre di Sarrabus, a 16th-century Spanish watchtower that offers panoramic views of the coastline. This tower is part of a very old defensive system.

In the afternoon, head over to Cala Pira, a secluded beach surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and known for its crystal-clear waters. It’s a great spot to try windsurfing or paddleboarding, both popular activities in the area. Day 3: Cala Gonone

The third day of this Sardinia itinerary starts with a  2.5-hour drive to Cala Gonone, a picturesque town in the Gulf of Orosei.

Once you arrive, start with a visit to the Grotta del Bue Marino, a series of sea caves known for their stunning stalactites and stalagmites. These caves were once home to the rare Mediterranean monk seal, which is how they got their name.

If you’re more in the mood for hiking, head out to the Gola di Gorropu, often referred to as Europe’s Grand Canyon. This impressive gorge, with walls reaching up to 500 meters, offers trails for all fitness levels and showcases some of Sardinia's most dramatic interior landscapes.

For dinner, make your way to Ristorante Ispinigoli, which is set in a natural cave for a truly unique dining experience. Be sure to try their roasted suckling pig, a local Sardinian specialty. Cala Gonone has a relaxed, coastal vibe with just the right amount of adventure, making it a great stop on your Sardinian trip.

Day 4: Olbia

Day four starts with a 1.5-hour drive north to Olbia. Once you’ve checked into your accommodation, head over to the port for a boat trip through the stunning Arcipelago di La Maddalena. This protected group of islands and islets is home to some of the most pristine beaches in the Mediterranean.

As you sail through the turquoise waters, keep an eye out for dolphins —they’re often spotted in this area. Also be sure to visit the famous Spiaggia Rosa (Pink Beach) on Budelli Island, with its unique rose-colored sand made from coral and shell fragments.

In the late afternoon, return to Olbia and explore the town's historic center. Here you can take a stroll along Corso Umberto, the main shopping street, where you can browse local handicrafts and sample traditional Sardinian sweets like seadas , a delicious fried pastry filled with cheese and drizzled with honey. For dinner, stop by Bacchus Restaurant, known for its excellent wine selection and traditional Sardinian dishes.

Where to stay in Olbia

  • Best for a boutique stay:  Hotel Stefania Boutique Hotel by the Beach . This elegant beachfront property offers stylish rooms with sea views. Its intimate atmosphere, excellent restaurant, and proximity to Pittulongu Beach make it perfect for a luxurious, relaxing getaway.
  • Best for beach lovers:  Hotel Mare Blue . Situated directly on Bados Beach, this hotel provides stunning sea views and easy beach access. With comfortable rooms, a beachfront restaurant, and water sports facilities.
  • Best for city exploration:  Hotel Centrale . Located in the heart of Olbia, this hotel offers a convenient base for discovering the city. With modern amenities, helpful staff, and proximity to shops, restaurants, and historical sites.

Day 5: Olbia

The fifth day is for exploring Olbia and the surrounding areas more. You can start your morning with a visit to the Chiesa di San Simplicio, a stunning Romanesque church and one of Sardinia's most significant medieval landmarks.

If you want to get a feel for local life, try to visit Olbia's lively market, which takes place on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. You can wander through stalls packed with fresh produce, local cheeses, and traditional crafts. It's the perfect chance to try some regional favorites like pecorino cheese and bottarga (cured fish roe).

From there, you can take a short drive to Costa Smeralda , famous for its upscale resorts and breathtaking beaches. Our recommendation is to spend some time relaxing at Spiaggia del Principe, a gorgeous crescent-shaped beach with clear turquoise waters.

Travel tip: While the Costa Smeralda is beautiful, it can be quite expensive. Consider packing a picnic to enjoy on one of the public beaches to save money.

Day 6: Alghero

Spend today exploring Alghero, often called "Little Barcelona" because of its rich Catalan influence. Begin your day with a stroll along the ancient city walls, where you'll get amazing views of the sea and the charming old town. Make a stop at the Torre di Porta Terra, a historic tower that now features a multimedia museum about Alghero's past.

For lunch, head to La Botteghina, a cozy spot in the heart of the old town. Don't miss out on their Catalan-style lobster, a dish that highlights Alghero's Spanish roots. Afterward, wander through the local market to check out fresh produce and Sardinian treats.

In the afternoon, hop on a boat to Capo Caccia and visit Neptune's Grotto, a stunning sea cave filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. If you're feeling adventurous, climb the 656 steps of the Escala del Cabirol (Goat's Steps) for incredible views of the coastline.

Where to stay in Alghero

Day 7: Alghero

For the final day, you've got two great options to choose from. If you're into wine, you can take a tour of the nearby Sella & Mosca winery, one of the biggest in Europe. You'll get a taste of Sardinian winemaking traditions and sample some fantastic local wines, including the famous Cannonau.

If history is more your thing, you could visit the Nuraghe di Palmavera, an ancient site with impressive prehistoric stone structures that are unique to Sardinia. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the island’s Nuragic civilization, with around forty "domus de janas" (fairy houses) carved into the rock dating back to 3300-2500 BC.

To wrap up your trip, treat yourself to a farewell dinner at The Kings in Alghero's old town. Their tasting menu highlights the best of Sardinian cuisine, with fresh seafood, locally sourced meats, and traditional desserts — a perfect way to end your stay.

How to get around in Sardinia

Forget public transport – to really see Sardinia, you'll want your own set of wheels. Renting a car is the best option as it gives you the freedom to veer off the beaten track and discover those hidden coves and mountain villages that make the island so special.

Brace yourself for some seriously jaw-dropping coastal drives. The twisting roads hugging Sardinia's rugged coastline offer fantastic views.

For island-hopping, the best way to get around is to jump on an organized boat tour. It's less hassle and you'll get to learn a lot more about the area along the way.

Where to stay in Sardinia

If you're on a budget, inland towns can often offer more affordable options without sacrificing charm.

For a more authentic experience, consider staying at an agriturismo (farm stay). You'll get a real feel for rural life, and most of the time, you’ll be treated to delicious home-cooked meals made with fresh local ingredients.

If you're after luxury, check out the resorts in Costa Smeralda. Just be ready to pay premium prices, especially in the summer. Booking ahead is a smart move if you want the best spots.

If you're figuring out where the best place for you to stay in Sardinia is, see our detailed guide .

How to get to Sardinia

However you're planning to arrive, make sure to book early, especially if you’re traveling during the busy summer months.

  • By plane : Sardinia has three main airports – Cagliari Elmas (CAG) in the south, Olbia Costa Smeralda (OLB) in the northeast, and Alghero-Fertilia (AHO) in the northwest.
  • By ferry: If you prefer a scenic journey, ferries run from various Italian mainland ports. The main operators are Tirrenia, Moby Lines, and Grimaldi Lines. An overnight ferry can even save you on accommodation.

When to visit Sardinia

Spring ( April to May ) and autumn ( September to October ) are ideal for visiting. The weather is mild, ranging from 59°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C), and you won’t have to fight for space on the beaches. These seasons are also perfect if you’re into hiking or biking.

If your main goal is beach time, summer ( June to August ) is when you’ll get the most sun. Just be prepared for crowds and higher prices, as it’s the peak tourist season. The island will be buzzing, but everything comes at a premium during this time.

The Best Room At ... the Brazilian Court Hotel in Palm Beach

The White Lotus of Florida is about to mark its grand centennial, and its Hepburn Lanai Suite may be the best spot to celebrate in style.

Nearly a hundred ago, a hotel opened in Palm Beach designed by an Italian architect who would come to define the most glamorous period of New York City luxury apartments buildings. His name was Rosario Candela , and the hotel is the Brazilian Court , which Candela conceived to revolve around the signature courtyards evoked by its name. This beacon of Old World glamour in a tony enclave where that quality is not in short supply will soon mark its centennial, a milestone that has seen it play host to movie stars from Hollywood's Golden Age to the modern era. Here, Bobby Schlesinger, whose family has owned the property since 2001 and who earlier this year completed a full-scale renovation of the historic hotel, answers the most pressing questions about the Brazilian Court, including the one amenity that makes it The White Lotus of Florida.

lanai suite brazilian court

Tell me about the signature suite at Brazilian Court. What makes it unique?

While nearly half of our room inventory is one, two, and three-bedroom suites, our most prestigious suite on the property is Unit 233, The Hepburn Lanai Suite. This 1,925-square-foot second floor two bedroom, three-bath suite overlooks the hotel pool and has vaulted ceilings in each room, a full-sized kitchen and dining room, and private terraces off the living room and each bedroom overlooking the pool. The Hepburn Suite lives more like a private residence than it does a hotel room, which is why many of our regular guests rent this room for months at a time. But if you miss out on The Hepburn, we still have three other magnificent pool-front Lanai Suites that are just as impressive.

What is the starting rate for the suite, and what kind of guest packages can you build around it?

The starting rate for The Hepburn suite is $5,500 per night. For those guests renting the Hepburn Suite, the ultimate luxury experience is what they are after, so many times they pair their stay with a full or half-day private excursion aboard the hotel’s 44-foot yacht docked just a block from the hotel, complete with catered lunch from Café Boulud .

Tell me a little bit about the property’s history and some of its famous guests over the years.

The hotel was opened on New Year's Day, 1926, so we are quickly approaching our 100th anniversary of serving guests of Palm Beach. A landmark property, the hotel was designed by famed architects Maurice Fatio and Rosario Candela, around two sprawling landscaped courtyards that give the hotel its name. Over those hundred years, we have been honored to welcome numerous noteworthy guests, including icons Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo, Marjorie Merriweather Post, and many more.

lanai suite brazilian court

What is one feature of the hotel that you think first-time visitors will find surprising?

The Brazilian Court is the only hotel in Florida that owns its private luxury yacht and retains a full-time crew to operate it. The 44-foot Italian Solaris motor yacht is an incredible amenity that is complimentary to hotel guests. We offer three excursions daily, and guests can schedule their voyage through the concierge or via an in-room iPad.

What are some of the hotel's oldest and newest amenities?

Our most iconic amenity is our oldest—our famed courtyards. The sheer number of private nooks and landscaped resting spots reserved for our guests set The Brazilian Court experience apart from any other property in Palm Beach. Further, we are incredibly proud of our twenty-year partnership with world-renowned Chef Daniel Boulud on his Café Boulud outpost within the hotel. Our newest amenities include our Casa retail boutique, with each piece hand-selected by hotel owner Courtney Schlesinger, and our poolside cocktail lounge, Lily’s.

Tell me about the dining experiences available at the property and the wellness programming.

There is no Palm Beach dining experience quite like Café Boulud. From the incomparable setting with the most outdoor dining of any restaurant in Palm Beach to cuisine prepared by the visionary chef himself, Daniel Boulud, it is a must-try for anyone visiting Palm Beach. If you require pampering, The Brazilian Court Salon is the go-to for discerning local Palm Beachers and visitors who want the best hair, nails and facials. The salon is well-loved by the community because of its talented creatives, and its tucked-away private location allows clients to feel like they're getting away from it all. Our famed poolside spa offered a residency of New York plastic surgeon Dr. Lara Devgan last season, during which she provided nonsurgical facial optimizations with "mimosas and conversation" the next day. We are planning a similar program for this season with a few extra surprises.

lanai suite brazilian court

Are there any other special experiences guests should ask her for when they arrive?

Guests are offered our curated Brazilian Court x Linus Bikes interactive map to discover Palm Beach by cycling through the mansion-lined streets. We have an 8-seat golf cart that whisks guests away to the beach, where our team will set up your beach loungers, umbrellas, towels, and all your necessary beach supplies for a soak in the Atlantic. Our newest and sought-after ultra-luxe experience for guests is a complimentary two-hour day cruise on the Intracoastal aboard BC One, the hotel's Solaris power yacht, with a glass of Rosé and delectable snacks from Café Boulud.

What sights, shops, and restaurants near the property should visitors check out this year?

The dining scene in Palm Beach is robust, but there is great anticipation for Thomas Keller’s new restaurant, which will arrive soon. If you want to venture off the island, I always recommend Aoli, which is just a short drive away in West Palm Beach. They have one of the best casual lunches around and an always-changing menu. For first-timers to the area, I always recommend checking out the Flager Museum to get some perspective on the history of Palm Beach. Still, an afternoon at the National Polo Center in Wellington can be a great way to take in some of the world’s best at the sport if you are a regular. As for shopping, the newly designed Gucci store on Worth Avenue is incredible. Still, the collection we created at our on-property boutique, Casa by BC, is unmatched by the most distinguished shoppers.

What’s in store for the rest of 2024 and 2025?

Starting this season, we look forward to welcoming a host of retail pop-ups within our Casa by BC Boutique, presenting exciting live entertainment programs of music and comedy featuring some of today's biggest stars. And closing out 2025 with a New Year's Eve bash unlike any other to celebrate our 100th anniversary.
