Ramanathaswamy Temple- Let’s go to the Divine hub where a God worshipped a God

One of the twelve Jyotirlinga Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple of Ramanathaswamy is an architectural excellence built in the 17th century. A must visit pilgrimage for both the Vaishnavite as well as the Shaiva sect of Hinduism; the temple constitutes a major part of the popular spiritual tourism destinations in India. The actual temple is believed to have been built by Lord Rama himself and thus it has gained an esteemed position in Indian mythological reference.

Today’s Ramanathaswamy Temple houses the longest temple corridor in the world, which is 197 meters long and 133 meters broad and stands with 1200 massive granite columns.  The main attraction of this temple is the Sand mound, a lingam created by God Rama’s wife.

Around 3.5km from Ramanathaswamy Temple, on the way to Dhanushkodi Village, Jada Tirtham is known among the Hindu devotees for the sacred pond. It is believed that when Rama was about to worship Shiva Lingam in Rameshwaram after killing Ravana, he washed his Jata (matted hair) in Jada Tirtham.

It is also believed to be a place where a giant Bird Jatayu passed away while trying to save Goddess Sita from Ravana. There is a temple next to the pond of Jada Tirtham. Jada Tirtham is believed to be the only place in India where Lord Kapardisvara is worshipped.

Ramanathaswamy Temple 

The main attraction that pulls travellers to Rameswaram is, of course, the sacred and famous Ramanthaswamy temple . The temple is also known as Arulmigu Ramanatha Swamy Temple . The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, and one of the two Jyotirlingas located in South India. According to legend, the Shiv Ling was established by Lord Ram himself, on his way to Lanka.

There are 22 wells in the temple. It is customary to bathe in the waters of these 22 कुंड before proceeding for the darshan of the Lord in the sanctum sanctorum. The other famous feature of the Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple is its famous temple corridor which is said to be the longest of its kind in any Hindu temple in India. The outer corridor of the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram has 1212 pillars and is a stunning example of the aesthetics of Indian temple architecture.

For early risers, the Mani Darshan Rameshwaram is going to be a special experience. The darshan happens between 4.00 AM to 5.00 AM, and one can see the “Sphatika Linga,” being worshipped.

Agni Theertham

The main theertha of the Ramanathasway temple where visitors bathe before proceeding to the temple is the Bay of Bengal itself. The place where devotees take a sanctification bath is the Agni Theertham .

According to legend, Lord Ram on his way back to Ayodhya from Lanka, bathed in the waters of the Agni Theertham before worshipping Lord Shiva, as atonement for the sin of killing a Brahmin, Ravana. The Agni Theertham is one of the sacred theerthas that is located outside the Ramanathaswamy temple.

Sangumal Beach

The Sangumal Beach is easily accessible from Agni Theertham. If you are looking for stealing some moments of tranquillity from the hands of time, then you must head towards the sands of the Sangumal beach. The spiritual vibes of Rameswaram can be felt in the silence of this beach in the arms of nature.

The Sangumal beach is definitely not a beach for swimming, it is a beach to just watch the fishing activity and ruminate. There is a Childrens’ Park nearby, where kids can have some fun.

Sri Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir

The Sri Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir is another important place that you must visit on your Rameswaram Trip. It is a temple with a huge idol of Hanuman in black granite that stands outside the sanctum. Inside the sanctum sanctorum, there is a smaller idol of Hanuman, Ram and Sita. These idols were brought here from Dhanushkodi. Rameshwaram to Dhanushkodi distance is about 19 kilometres.

An important attraction of the Sri Panchmukhi Hanuman temple is the floating stones that can be seen here. Though the stones are heavy, they can be seen floating in the water. It is believed that these are the stones that were used by Lord Ram and his Vanar Sena to build a bridge (Ram Setu) to Lanka, as described in the Ramayana.

Pamban Bridge

If you look at the map of Rameshwaram, you will realize that Rameswaram is actually an island, surrounded by the waters of the Indian Ocean on all sides. The Pamban Bridge is what connects the island of Rameshwaram to the mainland of India . There is a Railway bridge and a road bridge that run parallel to each other.

The name Pamban Bridge actually refers to the Railway Bridge , however, both are collectively referred to as Pamban Bridge. The official name of the road bridge is Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge .

The bridge spans from Mandapam to Pamban , which is the starting point of Rameshwaram. The sight of a train cruising on the 2.2-kilometre-long bridge in the middle of the waters of the Indian ocean is spectacular. The bridge has been featured in many movies including Chennai Express.

It is a beautiful and aesthetic structure that stands right opposite the Kundhukal Beach , about 8 kilometres from the Pamban Bridge. The memorial brings alive the stirring life and times of Swami Vivekananda through photographs and images of the monk.

Ramar Patham

If you are familiar with the Ramayana, you will know of the incident when Lord Ram stands atop a mountain and surveys the expanse of water stretching out to Lanka. He then decides to build a bridge to Lanka. Ramar Paatham , which literally means, “ Feet of Rama ,” is a temple built on a hillock. It is believed the hillock was a mountain in the times of the Ramayana.

Today the hillock happens to be the highest point in Rameshwaram and offers a panoramic view. The temple has the footsteps of Shri Rama engraved inside a Chakra in rock .

Lakshman Teertha

The Lakshman Theertha is a pond located not far from the main Rameswaram Temple. According to legend, Lord Ram’s brother Lakshman had installed and worshipped a Shivling here. During the festival known as Thai Poosam, a floating car procession is organized in the Lakshman Theertha.

Jada Theertham

The Jada Theertham is a holy pond that is located about 13 kilometres from Rameswaram. It can be visited on the way to Dhanushkodi. There is a small Shiva temple in front of the Jada Theertha. According to legend, Ram and Lakshman washed their Jada/Jata (hair), in this pond before they proceeded to Rameswaram, after killing Ravana in Lanka.

Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi , which was once a thriving village on the edge of the southern coast of India is today a ghost town . Ruins of a church, railway station , and other structures can be seen standing forlorn in the sand. Dhanushkodi was completely destroyed during a storm in the year 1964.

The Dhanuskodi Beach makes for a pleasant stroll as a strong wind blows across the Indian ocean. The beach is not very safe for swimming as the currents can be strong.

Rama’s Bridge is a land path that is seen beneath the waters of the ocean. It is near the Palk Straits and leads from Rameswaram to current day Sri Lanka. Rameshwaram has the first sea bridge connecting the town of  Mandapam with Pamban Island, and Rameswaram. Abdandoned town of Dhanushkodi is also located on Pamban Island which was a bustling town until  it got destroyed in 1964 by cyclone. Renowned for its magnificent prakaras with massive sculptured pillars on either side, The Ramanathaswamy Temple houses the longest corridor in the world. Agniteertham is famous for its sacred waters and Pilgrims perform poojas in honour of their ancestors at this seashore. Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

Europe is known for being a generally safe place to travel. Most countries in Europe have fewer gun-related crimes in a year than America has in a day! However, foreigners should avoid some places in Europe or at least be extra careful while visiting.

The places on this list are known for murders, robbing, pick-pocketing, and even violence targeted specifically towards tourists. Here are the 14 most dangerous cities in Europe and why you should avoid them.

1. Moscow, Russia

With the ongoing war in the Ukraine, Russia is a dangerous place for American tourists. You could be detained for the smallest thing or even for saying the smallest thing. One recent example is Brittney Griner. She was imprisoned in Russia for accidentally packing a marijuana pen in her bag. She spent 293 days in a Russian prison for her “crime”.

Just in 2021, 143,000 crimes were reported in the city of Moscow, the highest in all of Europe. There are also about 2.8 murders per 100,000 people that happen in this city and terrorist threats and attacks, with at least one attack happening each year.

2. Bradford, UK

This city has the highest crime rate in all of Western Europe. Bradford is located in the center of the UK just outside the city of Leeds. Most of the crimes that are committed here are violent crimes, making the violent crime rate in Bradford twice as high as the average violent crime for the rest of the UK.

Most of the attacks that are happening here are robberies and assaults. This town used to be a mill town with a huge textile industry. However, since the mills have shut down, it has become one of the most impoverished areas in all the UK. Crime is continuing to increase here each year, so whatever you do, don’t plan your next trip to Bradford.

3. Marseille, France

I’ve been to Marseille probably five times since living in France. It’s just a couple of hours from Nice, where I live, and is a much larger city. It has the second-highest crime rate in Europe, with 45 murders happening last year alone. Marseille is a port town, which means that it’s fairly easy to traffic drugs through this city, which has led to it being taken over by mafias, drug dealers, and drug users.

If you plan on staying here, try to avoid going out at night. During the day, my wife and I felt pretty safe and even walked around with a DSLR camera. Marseille is also a great place to base yourself to see the surrounding area, like the Calanques and the Verdon Gorge. Just make sure to get back before dark!

4. Birmingham, UK

This city is just a few hours outside London but is much more dangerous. Birmingham used to be the most dangerous city in Western Europe, but with Bradford’s rising crime rate, it couldn’t keep up (but it is close). The number of homicides has more than doubled in the past 10 years, from 65 to 150, and the number continues to rise each year.

The most common crime here is burglary, and the shoplifting rate is almost double that of the rest of the UK. One famous person from here is Ozzy Osbourne, if that gives you any clue about the kind of people who live here.

5. Naples, Italy

Naples is another port city and is one of the saddest cities I’ve visited in Europe. There are homeless people everywhere and literal trash tornadoes that go through the city (hopefully this gives you an idea of how filthy of a city it is). I’ve also visited this city about 5 times and even with all of its danger and filth, it’s still one of my favorite cities in Europe. I mean, it’s the birthplace of pizza! How could you not love it?!

The major crimes that affect Naples are mafia-related crimes such as drugs, drug dealing, and murders related to drugs. There’s also a lot of petty theft, like pick-pocketing, mainly occurring near crowded tourist spots. Like Marseille, just try to be inside by the time the sun has set, and you’ll be okay.

6. Montpellier, France

Who knew that France was such a dangerous place?! Well, it’s dangerous by European standards. Montpellier has a poverty rate of 27%, double France’s national average. This means that people are likelier to do desperate things to get money.

The most common crimes committed here are burglaries and robberies that mostly happen at night. This is one of the largest cities in France, so like all major cities, try to be home by dark and don’t do any sketchy dealings, and you should be fine.

7. Vlora, Albania

The country of Albania has the highest number of gun-related deaths per year in all of Europe, averaging 1.7 deaths per 100,000 people. It more than triples the second-highest gun-related deaths per 100,000 people in Europe (which we’ll get to next).

Because of this, Albania has been cracking down on gun control by making guns harder to get. This has led to a 50% decrease in homicides in Albania from 2014 to 2022, with that number continuing to drop yearly.

Vlora has had a record number of crimes, with over 4,500 reported in 2021, most of which were petty crimes against locals. Visitors to the city have said that they feel pretty safe here, especially during the day.

8. Malmo, Sweden

For some reason, the number of gun-related deaths in Sweden is rapidly increasing year after year. Malmo is known for its gang-related crimes, especially gun violence. Sweden has the second highest homicide rate in Europe, with about 0.4 deaths per 100,000 people, so about a fourth of the amount in Albania.

Malmo is known as the crime capital of Sweden and has the highest number of rapes and violent crimes. Many say that the gangs are to blame for this, but the truth is, it’s most likely a result of increasing poverty in the area. The wealth gap in Sweden is one of the largest in the world, putting its citizens in increasingly desperate positions.

9. Athens, Greece

When I traveled to Athens back in 2018, it felt very similar to Naples. The streets are pretty dirty, there are some pretty sketchy-looking people wandering the streets, and the food is incredible.

Like all capital cities in Europe, pickpocketing and tourist scams run rampant here. Just make sure you are keeping an eye on your valuables (especially near tourist spots), and you should be okay.

There’s also a problem with drug dealing and drug use in Athens, so stay away from the outskirts of the city. Another common scam is the taxi scam. I’ve never been scammed in a taxi, no matter where I am in the world. Athens Taxi drivers have one of the lowest taxi rates in all of Europe, meaning tourists are at risk of being scammed every time they walk into a taxi.

10. Amsterdam, Netherlands

We loved it when my wife and I traveled to Amsterdam in 2017. We stayed in a little hostel outside the city and biked into the main city every morning for a day of sightseeing and fun.

Fast-forward to 2024, and it’s a completely different story. There’s trash everywhere, homeless people cover the streets, and it just doesn’t feel like it used to.

Some of the most common crimes in Amsterdam are getting your bike stolen (I mean, it is the bike capital of the world) and getting pickpocketed.

There are occasions when crime is taken too far and tourists end up getting stabbed in places like the Red Light District, so just don’t walk around with anything too expensive in super touristy areas.

11. Brussels, Belgium

The center of Brussels is generally safe. However, like most capital cities, Brussels has some dangerous areas, including Schaerbeek, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, and the area near the main train station.

Most crimes that are committed here are petty crimes like pickpocketing and robberies. You should be good if you keep an eye on your things and stay in a safe area with plenty of people around.

12. Istanbul, Turkey

I don’t know why Turkey gets such a bad rap when it comes to dangerous European cities. My wife and I lived in Turkey for three months and have never felt safer and more welcomed by a community. We stayed in southern Turkey, but we’ve also heard amazing things about Istanbul.

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and lies on the border of Asia and Europe. Like any of the bigger cities on this list, stay out of tourist areas after dark, beware of purse snatchers, and keep a close eye on your valuables, and you’ll be safe. Also, Tarlabasi is a neighborhood in Istanbul that is one of the poorest places, so try to avoid this area if possible.

13. Rome, Italy

Rome is Italy’s capital and one of the most beautiful cities in the world . However, Rome is also one of Europe’s more well-known tourist scam areas. Scammers all over the city are just looking to make a quick buck. Some of the most famous scams are fake painters, people who come up to you with a clipboard, and people giving you “free” souvenirs and then asking for money.

Also, I don’t know if you’ve seen the famous “attenzione pickpocket!” lady on TikTok, but she goes around different cities in Italy calling out pickpocketers. These pickpocketers are usually well-dressed women who travel in groups of two to five. While one of them asks you a question or tries to call attention to herself, the others will start going through oblivious onlookers’ bags and stealing their valuables.

14. Riga, Latvia

This quaint city in Lithuania is the murder capital of Europe. It has a murder rate of 4.05 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, dropping from 4.9, which was recorded in 2020. Latvia has a female homicide rate of 60%, while the rest of Europe is around half of this number. This means that most of the murders in Latvia are spouse, partner, or family-related.

For tourists, Riga is considered a relatively safe city. The main crimes against tourists are pickpocketing, purse snatching, and car theft, most of which happen near the Old Town and train stations.

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR. 

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

Notable Kremlin Towers

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated. 

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín​ or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable. 

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.
