Entry & trekking
Known as 'Ooty of Kerala', Ranipuram is a rare trekking destination wi...
Introduction
You are atop one of the largest hills of North Kerala, Ranipuram, popularly considered as Kerala’s answer to Ooty. As the fog finally rolls in, everything around vaporizes into a blissful white, save for a little patch of green, trembling underneath your feet. You remember that on the valleys somewhere on one side, the plains of Karnataka lie, sprawling up to the horizon, and on the other side, Kerala, that lush green landscape limited only by an expanse of blue, the ocean. But right now everything is gone. With the misted curtains of early morning drawn in, they could all be figments of imagination save this thin strip of grass, where you stand perplexed, shivering at the slightest suggestion of a breeze. A few more steps you could reach the final challenge, a gigantic rock, some tower of a Babel, challenging the heavens, with wreathes of cloud or mist hung around its shoulders. You only have to climb that rock beyond this foggy wall somehow, with a mild sun encouraging you with its cold rays, to strike off this place, Ranipuram from the bucket list of heavenly places in Kerala, you'd see this lifetime. Ranipuram is one from the bucket list of heavenly places in Kerala, you’d see this lifetime. Ranipuram is a hill station in the Indian state of Kerala. Situated in the Vellarikundu taluk, Kasargod District, Ranipuram is 750 meters above sea level and 45 km from Kanhangad. It is known as "Ooty of Kerala". It is a popular trekking spot. Misty hills around the Ranipuram peak give pleasant, memorable and exciting experiences. Kannur, Kasargod Talakaveri, Madikeri and Virajpet are nearby. Ranipuram Trek: Ooty of Kerala
In the Kasargod district of Kerala is Ranipuram, popularly known as the ‘Ooty of Kerala’ and previously called Madathumala. It is an offbeat trekking destination, which is sparsely populated and provides panoramic views as you walk across misty, lush green grasslands. Due to the length of the trail, Ranipuram makes for a perfect one-day getaway if you reside in or around Mangalore or in the northern part of Kerala.
Credits: Arun Muzhakkunnu
Where is Ranipuram
The trail starts from the DTPC (District Tourism Promotion Council) guest house, located at the base of Ranipuram hills. One can reach there by getting a jeep from Panathady, 10km away from Ranipuram.
Nearest railway station: Kanhangad (45km from Ranipuram)
Nearest airport: Mangalore International Airport (113km away from Ranipuram)
Credits: Sush2711
Difficulty level
The trail to the top is around 3 to 4km and the elevation of the hill is 750m. It is an easy trek which will take 45 minutes to trek up the hill. However, the downhill trek can be a bit challenging due to the slippery nature of the soil.
You can do this trek on your own. The distance is short and the elevation low. It’s easy to climb uphill. It can however get slippery when you’re walking down the hill. Beware of leeches. It’s best to do this trek after sunrise and before sunset as Ranipuram is home to many wild animals, making it unsafe to trek during wee hours.
Credits: Jabir Ibn Abdhulla
Considering one is coming from Mangalore, it should cost you around ₹650-1000. This cost covers everything including food, which you can get at any local restaurant in Kanhangad.
When to do it
December to February is the best time to go as the weather is pleasant during these months. Summer season (March to June) should be avoided as it gets immensely hot and humid.
Since it is just a one-day trek, the route is fairly simple. Considering one is coming from Mangalore, this is how your route should look like –
Board a train from Mangalore and get off at the Kanhangad Railway Station. It will take you an hour to reach Kanhangad. Ask locals for the bus stand from where you will board a bus to Panathady. The bus stand is at a walkable distance from the railway station. Once you reach Panathady, book a jeep to reach Ranipuram. Make sure you have your jeep driver's contact number because there is no other way to get back from the top.
Mangalore – Kanhangad – Panathady – Ranipuram
After reaching Ranipuram, start your trek from the DTPC guest house. Most of trek will be through dense shola forests. It will take you around 45 minutes to reach the top, where you will be greeted by huge boulders, picturesque views and gusty winds. The views from the top are often compared to the views one gets in Ooty, the popular hill station in Tamil Nadu. The hills showcase the beauty of the Western Ghats and make for a delightful short journey.
While the Ranipuram trek is perfect for a one-day trip, you can plan your trip for a weekend and explore some areas nearby such as Bekal Fort and Kappil Beach. Stay at Taj Bekal Resort and Spa if you want to splurge; Deira City Regency if you're looking for a budget stay; Emirates Regency if you're looking for something in the mid-range.
Credits: Renjithks
What to pack
Since this is just a one-day trek, you don't need to carry much. Wear proper trekking/hiking shoes, carry two litres of water per person and pack eatables such as fruits, dry fruits, energy bars and the like as you won’t find any restaurant or shop on the top. Leeches are common so it's necessary to cover up.

At a distance of 55 km from Kasaragod, 50 km from Bekal, 45 km from Kanhangad, 195 km from Kozhikode, 100 km from Mangalore & 80 km from Madikeri, Ranipuram is a hill station of Kerala located in Kasaragod district. It lies at an altitude of 750 m adjacent to Kottancheri-Talacauvery mountain range and sharing the border with Karnataka. Ranipuram was formerly known as Madathumala. The extensive forests of Madathumala merge with the forests of Karnataka. It is a beautiful mountain terrain covered with evergreen shola woods, rain forests and grasslands. The prime attraction of Ranipuram is Ranipuram National Park. The 50 sq.km sanctuary is bordered with Talacauvery in Karnataka. The national park is home to a substantial population of elephants and many fauna like deer, leopard, porcupine, butterflies and giant Malabar squirrels. There are more than 200 species of birds. Safaris can be arranged in the park and this is the best way to explore the sanctuary. Ranipuram is famous for its trekking trails and varied vegetation. There are two trekking trails available to explore the beauty of Western Ghats of Ranipuram. In order to reach the top of the Ranipuram hill which is called Mani, a 45 minutes' walk through the forest is needed. One can get a panoramic view of the landscape and large expanse of green valleys. The rocks on the trekking path are slippery and visitors have to be cautious. Since leeches are very common here travellers are advised to wear long socks and carry salt. There are also trek paths to Talacauvery (origin place of River Cauvery) and Kottagiri from Ranipuram. Madiyam Kovilakam Temple, Palakkunnu Bhagavathy Temple, Bharani Maholsavam, Anandashram, Nityanandashram and Kottancheri Hill are the other attractions near to Ranipuram. There are tourist cottages on the hill top, provided by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. The best time to visit Ranipuram is from November to March. Ranipuram can be reached via Kanhangad and Panathady. Panathady is the nearest stop from where Ranipuram hill station is about 9 km. Jeep services are available from Panathady. One bus service from Kanhangad is also available which is at 4 PM and reaches Ranipuram at 6.30 PM.
