Il Lombardia 2023 overview

On October 7, the men’s peloton will take on the final Monument of the season: Il Lombardia . Il Lombardia is one of the oldest and most prestigious races in Italy and the final event in the esteemed Trittico di Autunno, or the ‘Autumn treble’, which includes its sister races Milano-Torino and Gran Piemonte . It’s also the fifth and final Monument of the cycling season and, arguably, the most evocative and visually arresting of the lot.

18 WorldTour teams and seven ProTeams will take to the start of this year’s race, with UAE Team Emirates heading to Como with the two-time defending champion, Tadej Pogačar . The Slovenian will be sure to face stiff competition, however, from the likes of Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and his compatriot, Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma).

Known as the ‘race of the falling leaves’ thanks to its autumn spot in the calendar, Il Lombardia takes in a challenging route around Lake Como in the north of Italy. The first edition took place in 1905, making the Tour of Lombardy the third oldest of the Monuments.

Since 2014, the race has taken place on a route between Bergamo and Como, with the direction and finish alternating yearly. This year’s edition is set to finish in Bergamo. More so than the other Monuments, this race is packed with long climbs, making it a proper climbers’ classic. Not just the punchy efforts we see in the spring, but long and dragging efforts.

The two most iconic climbs on the route are the Madonna del Ghisallo , near Como, and the Passo di Ganda , near Bergamo. Depending on the direction of the race, both of these tend to be decisive points for attacks to go.

Held over the picturesque hills that punctuate the region of Lombardy in northwest Italy, Il Lombardia is one of the most beautiful bike races on the entire racing calendar and, as the race falls at the end of the cycling season, a timely reminder that all good and beautiful things must eventually come to an end.

Il Lombardia 2023 route profile

Il Lombardia 2023 route profile

The full route for this year’s Il Lombardia was announced in recent weeks and is 238.1km in length, with seven categorised climbs between Como and Bergamo. In recent years, the route has stayed largely the same, but there are subtle differences between each edition.

Starting in Como, the famous Madonna del Ghisallo climb will come early on in this year’s edition. At 8.8km in length but with a gradient of only 3.9%, it’s certainly not the hardest climb on the route, but it’s an early test and an opportunity for riders to attack. It’s the church at the top of the hill that makes this climb so iconic, as the Madonna del Ghisallo has been declared the patron saint of cyclists, and the church contains a small museum dedicated to cycling.

In the middle of the day, it’s the back-to-back combination of the Dossena climb and the Zambla Alta that will really begin the whittling-down process, and separate the strong climbers from the rest of the peloton. The first climb, the Dossena, comes in at 11.1km at a 6.1% gradient, and then there’s only a kilometre or two of descending before the road starts rising again to Zambla. This climb is more gentle, averaging 3.3% with a steeper ramp towards the top, but it’s 9.8km in length, making a total of almost 20km straight of climbing. With still more than 50km to go to the finish, this is why Lombardia is so hard.

The final big climb is the Passo di Ganda, a 9.3km effort at 7.1%. This should draw out the key move of the day: you need to be in front here if you’re going to win. From there, there is a long descent towards Bergamo, with one last climb before the finish line. The Colle Aperto is just a small kick at 1.3km in length with a 7% gradient, but it can be a big challenge after a long day - or the last chance to attack a small group.

Il Lombardia 2023 contenders

Unlike the other Monuments, Il Lombardia is a race made for the pure climbers, so it’s often won by the best climber or GC rider of the year. One of the strongest riders who’s yet to win here is Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step). His first outing at Lombardia was memorable for all the wrong reasons, after a crash on a corner saw him go over the edge of a low bridge in dramatic fashion. Since then, though, the 23-year-old has won the Vuelta, two Liège-Bastogne-Lièges and the World Championships, so he’s definitely a big favourite despite his previous bad luck. One of the strongest climbers in the peloton with a proven pedigree in one-day races, Evenepoel will win Lombardia one day, it’s just a question of when.

What many fans will be hoping for in October is a head-to-head between Evenepoel and Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). The pair have gone up against each other relatively few times in their careers so far, and Lombardia would be the perfect place to do it. Pogačar is the defending champion, having won in both 2021 and 2022, so he definitely has a good chance at making that a hat-trick, a feat so far only achieved by Fausto Coppi and Alfredo Binda. What’s more, only two riders have ever won Flanders and Lombardia in the same year - Rik van Looy (1959) and Hennie Kuiper (1981) - so Pogačar would join a very exclusive list of names. The Slovenian is almost unbeatable in one-day races when he puts his mind to it, so it will be hard to look past him if he lines up in Como this year.

Finally, it may be something of a dream, but a rider who could take a fairytale win here is Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ). The Frenchman is set to retire at the end of this season, and Il Lombardia is actually slated to be his final-ever race. Pinot won here in 2018, so he certainly has the ability, and he has been keen to prove that his last season is not a question of fading away, he is still very much in the frame of racing. Winning a Monument will be a big ask, but expect to see Pinot try to stay involved in the action for as long as possible.

For a full list of our contenders, keep an eye out for our preview, which will be released in the week leading up to the race.

Coverage will start at 10:00 CEST on Saturday 7 October.

Il Lombardia race history

The first edition of Il Lombardia was held in 1905 - when it was known as Milano-Milano, making it older than both the Giro d’Italia and Milano-Sanremo, two of Italy’s most historic bike races. It was an idea conceived by a journalist, to pit some of the best Italian cyclists against each other, and it quickly attracted a strong start list. The race also established itself as the last big race in Italy and Europe, and was renamed the Giro di Lombardia in 1907.

It’s also one of the few races on the calendar to experience very little interruption over the course of its lifetime. In fact, only two editions have ever been cancelled in the race’s history, in 1943 and 1944 due to World War II.

Now on its 116th edition, the race is well established as one of cycling’s Monument Classics. Despite the route changing countless times over the course of its history, the race has developed a reputation for sending riders up some of the most feared and fabled climbs in the sport of cycling - like the Madonna del Ghisallo, Muro di Sormano and Civiglio, climbs that are heavenly to watch riders struggle up from afar, but truly hellish to ride yourself.

The Muro di Sormano is one of the most feared climbs in all of cycling

Going into the thirties, forties and fifties, Lombardia became the showground for the golden era of Italian cycling, frequently hosting thrilling battles between Alfredo Binda, Gino Bartali and Fausto Coppi. Coppi’s solo attacks from the Madonna del Ghisallo all the way to the finish helped cement the climb’s legendary status and the prestige of the race as a whole.

Coppi, in fact, holds the record in this race for the most wins, with five taken between 1946 and 1954. The Italian icon won all five of his Il Lombardia titles solo and in almost the same fashion each time, by attacking on the incredibly steep ramps of the Madonna del Ghisallo before time trialing his way to the finish line in Milan.

Several other legends of Italian cycling have won this race, helping the home nation build their colossal tally of 69 wins in the event. Riders like Paolo Bettini, Francesco Moser, Damiano Cunego, Costante Girardengo and Vincenzo Nibali have all taken multiple victories here, each one helping to stamp Italy’s dominance all over the race. In the second half of the 20th century, more huge names adorn the list of winners: Sean Kelly, Eddy Merckx, and Roger De Vlaeminck.

Since the Coppi and Bartali years, the race has moved its finish from Milan to Como which has, in turn, changed the entire identity of the race. What was once considered a race for the all-rounders and classics specialists, is now a race for the purest of climbers. Many describe this race as one of the most arduous of the entire season; with countless leg-breaking climbs and a mammoth distance of 250km+ to conquer it’s no surprise why.

Due to the incredibly attritional nature of the route, and the many climbs from which riders can launch stinging attacks from, we typically see solo riders emerge victorious. Since Philippe Gilbert’s first victory in the race in 2009, we’ve seen nine riders arrive at the finish line solo. Jakob Fuglsang (2020), Bauke Mollema (2019), Thibaut Pinot (2018) and Vincenzo Nibali (2017 and 2015) are just several of the most recent riders to do this.

Several riders have won the race in a sprint finish from a small group in recent years however, most notably Tadej Pogačar who beat the home favourite Fausto Masnada in a two-up sprint to claim the 2021 title. The Slovenian superstar defended his title in 2022 to become the first rider since Joaquim Rodríguez in 2013 to win back-to-back editions.

Lombardia is also the only Monument which has ever been won by a Latin American rider, thanks to Esteban Chaves’ win here in 2017.

BERGAMO, Italy (AP) — Tadej Pogačar made it a hat trick of wins at Il Lombardia, fighting off cramp to again successfully defend his title in the final one-day classic of the season on Saturday.

Pogačar attacked on the final descent, with around 30 kilometers (19 miles) remaining of the 238-kilometer (148-mile) route from Como to Bergamo, and the Slovenian cyclist swiftly built a gap.

He could clearly be seen grimacing in pain and banging his thigh in the final 10 kilometers (6 miles) as he struggled with cramp but the two-time Tour de France champion held on for a comfortable victory.

Pogačar had plenty of time to celebrate on the approach to the finish line. He crossed 51 seconds ahead of Andrea Bagioli and compatriot Primož Roglič, who was riding in his last race for Jumbo-Visma before moving to Bora-Hansgrohe .

“To win for the third time in my third participation and for the second time here in Bergamo, it’s a dream come true,” said Pogačar, who rides for UAE Team Emirates. “I wanted to win solo but I thought Alexander Vlasov would stay with me for longer because he was one of the strongest today.

“In the moment I got a little gap, I did the descent much better than two years ago. I got cramps on my right leg and I’ve thought I was done but I pushed through. It’s amazing!”

Pogacar is the third rider to win three consecutive editions of Il Lombardia after Fausto Coppi in 1946-1949 (4) and Alfredo Binda in 1925-1927.

There was more misery for Remco Evenepoel in Italy as the Belgian champion once again crashed in Il Lombardia, although fortunately the incident was a lot less serious than three years ago.

Evenepoel, who was one of the pre-race favorites, crashed early on Saturday and although he was able to continue he was left with a bloodied knee and elbow and eventually finished ninth, 1 minute, 26 seconds behind Pogačar.

A crash at Il Lombardia in 2020 sent Evenepoel flying over a bridge and left him with a broken pelvis.

His first race back was the Giro d’Italia the following year but he also crashed out of that. Evenepoel had to withdraw from this year’s Italian Grand Tour after testing positive for coronavirus when he was leading the race.

Il Lombardia 2023: Tadej Pogacar solos to third consecutive victory

Pogacar attacked successfully on the descent of the Passo di Granda to complete a rare hat-trick of wins in the Italian monument.

Tadej Pogacar completes a hat-trick of victories in Il Lombardia

Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar completed a hat-trick of victories in Il Lombardia on Saturday (7 October).

In an entertaining and incident-packed race, Pogacar attacked with just over 30km to go on the descent of the Passo di Granda and - despite appearing to suffer from cramp during his solo effort - crossed the line in Bergamo almost a minute clear of his rivals.

The two-time Tour de France winner is only the third man to clinch three consecutive triumphs in the 'Race of the Falling Leaves', joining Fausto Coppi and Alfredo Binda .

This was also Pogacar's fifth win in his last nine monuments and marks him out as the most complete rider in road cycling with victories in cobbled classics like the Tour of Flanders and Grand Tours.

Afterwards, he admitted he had tried to attack on the Passo di Granda but ended up making his move on the descent where he was caught in 2021 before securing his first Il Lombardia victory.

Pogacar said, "It was just in the moment that I got a little gap. I knew the descent much better than two years ago - two years ago, this descent was a bit of a disaster. It was tough to go so far to the finish. Today was a super-hard race.

"I had cramp, first on my right leg and then on my left leg. I was thinking that was it but I pushed through and I lowered down a little bit the power. I just focused on being as 'aero' as possible to save myself for the final kick and I hope that behind there would not be such a great cooperation.

"Third participation, third win, second time here in Bergamo... It's a dream to come solo. Today, it was fantastic. I was enjoying the last few kilometres even if it was so so painful, I was enjoying it a lot."

With less than 40km remaining, only Brian Healy remained from an early breakaway but the Irishman was soon reeled in by the chasers.

Remco Evenepoel and Olympic champion Richard Carapaz were among those dropped as the action intensified at the front.

And then Pogacar made his break with Primoz Roglic - in his last race for Jumbo-Visma - and brothers Adam and Simon Yates unable to stay with him.

Pogacar was cheered on by masses of spectators as he took the closing Colle Aperto climb on his own, past the 'Curva Pinot' filled with supporters of French rider Thibaut Pinot in his final race, before arriving at the finish line in Bergamo.

The day's surprise package, Andrea Bagioli , took the sprint for second place ahead of Roglic with Aleksandr Vlasov in fourth ahead of the Yates brothers.

Preview Tour of Lombardy 2023 | Ultimate showdown between Roglic, Evenepoel and Pogacar!

W ell, the time has come... the Tour of Lombardy . Of course, it's a magnificent race, but it always marks the end of a fantastic cycling year. Nevertheless, IDLProCycling.com looks forward to the 2023 edition of the ' Race of the Falling Leaves' with equal enthusiasm!

Cycling through Italy always has something magical, but with the Tour of Lombardy, history always seems to be a tad more significant. Autumn usually arrives (although this year it's still late summer), the riders prepare for one last major race and the journalists traditionally wrap up their road calendar for 2023 here as well.

Yet, we're never disappointed by what the riders deliver. Think of the 2019 edition when Bauke Mollema took the win. Or the years 2021 and 2022, with Tadej Pogacar standing atop the podium twice. The Slovenian is back this season, but starting from Como, the competition will undoubtedly be fierce.

Tour of Lombardy 2023: Course, weather and times

Bergamo-Como or Como-Bergamo, the tried and tested formula for the Tour of Lombardy. This edition, RCS opts for the latter, starting at Lake Como. The last time this choice was made was in 2021, when Tadej Pogacar won the race on a route identical to the 2023 edition.

This means from the northern part of Italy, we head towards Madonna del Ghisallo, often one of the decisive climbs when approached from the opposite direction. This time, however, this nine-kilometer ascent at 4.4% will likely be just a footnote in the race narrative.

The demolition work starts in the middle part of the race. The Roncola (9.4 km at 6.6%), Berbenno (6.8 km at 4.6%), Crosseta (11.0 km at 6.2%), and Zambla Alta (9.5 km at 3.5%) quickly follow one after the other. Yet, it's still quite a distance to the finish line from there.

Things change when the Passo di Ganda begins. This 9.2-kilometer climb at 7.3% is one of the toughest challenges in this Tour of Lombardy and is started with just over forty kilometers to go.

Once over the top, we descend at a rapid pace to Nembro. From there, the route leads to the day's final obstacle: the Colle Aperto in the old town of Bergamo, 1.6 kilometers at 7.9%. From its summit, it's a three-kilometer descent to the finish on Via Roma in Bergamo, where we'll find out the winner of the 2023 Tour of Lombardy.

38.3 km: Madonna del Ghisallo (9.0 km at 4.4%)

100.9 km: Roncola (9.4 km at 6.6%)

129.0 km: Berbenno (6.8 km at 4.6%)

161.9 km: Crosseta (11.0 km at 6.2%)

174.7 km: Zambla Alta (9.5 km at 3.5%)

206.6 km: Passo di Ganda (9.2 km at 7.3%)

234.8 km: Colle Aperto (1.6 km at 7.9%)

It's going to be a glorious weekend in Italy. On Saturday, it's almost 20 degrees Celsius at the start in Como, and with a lovely sunshine, it might even surpass 25 degrees Celsius in Bergamo, the finishing town.

Start: 10:35 a.m.

Finish: Around 5 p.m.

Favorites for the Tour of Lombardy 2023

Please note that the list of participants is not yet complete!

Showdown! Some of the world's best cyclists will head to Como on Saturday to begin this edition of the Tour of Lombardy. Primoz Roglic is seen as the absolute top favorite for Jumbo-Visma. The Slovenian concludes his stint with the Dutch team with this Lombardia, and he's undoubtedly keen on a beautiful farewell gift and his second Monument for the Dutch squad.

It won't be presented on a silver platter, as Remco Evenepoel also has a score to settle with the Race of the Falling Leaves. The Belgian from Soudal Quick-Step had a tough crash in the 2020 Italian race and has since been set on revenge. Unlike many competitors, Evenepoel did not race in the lead-up to the event, but his training footage already promised much good.

It speaks volumes about the participants that Tadej Pogacar of UAE-Team Emirates is our third man. The Slovenian won the last two editions of Il Lombardia, each time after slightly lesser performances in the preparatory races. Given that, it's promising that he hasn't clinched a victory this fall.

Moving on to the outsiders, we find men who have proven themselves in recent weeks. Aleksandr Vlasov (BORA-hansgrohe), Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost, also featuring Ben Healy), and Enric Mas (Movistar) have already amassed multiple top finishes. Vlasov and Carapaz even reached the podium on Tuesday in Tre Valli Varesine, while Mas finished second in Lombardy last year. Soudal Quick-Step's Andrea Bagioli is also in top form, as demonstrated by his win in Gran Piemonte on Thursday.

Simon Yates , a podium finisher at the Giro dell'Emilia, will be present, as will his brother Adam from UAE-Team Emirates. Another man seeming to hit form just in time for the race is Michael Woods of Israel-Premier Tech, who is secretly having a strong fall season. We must also mention Varese winner Ilan Van Wilder , INEOS member Carlos Rodriguez , and the Bahrain Victorious duo of Santiago Buitrago (third in Liège) and Mikel Landa (third in Lombardy last year).

At Groupama-FDJ, Thibaut Pinot will race his final event alongside Lenny Martinez and Romain Grégoire, while Cofidis and AG2R Citroën will feature the likes of Ion Izagirre, Guillaume Martin, Felix Gall, and Ben O'Connor . DSM-firmenich relies on Romain Bardet, while Lidl-Trek's Bauke Mollema seems to be off form. Giulio Ciccone from the same team had a tough fall in Tre Valli Varesine on Tuesday.

Favorites for the Tour of Lombardy 2023, according to IDLProCycling.com

Top favorites: Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step)

Outsiders: Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates), Aleksandr Vlasov (Jayco AlUla), Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) and Enric Mas (Movistar)

Longshots: Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech), Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla), Adam Yates (UAE-Team Emirates), Ben O'Connor (AG2R Citroën), Andrea Bagioli, Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step), Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers), Mikel Landa and Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious)

The 2023 Tour of Lombardy live stream takes place on Saturday (Oct. 7). ►  Start time: 4:20 a.m. ET / 1:20 a.m. PT / 9:20 a.m. BST / 7:20 p.m. AEDT ► FREE LIVE STREAM — Das Erste (Germany) ► FREE LIVE STREAM — RAI (Italy) ►  U.S. — GCN Plus ►  U.K. — GCN Plus / Eurosport ► Watch anywhere — Try ExpressVPN 100% risk free

Il Lombardia, the final of cycling’s five ‘Monuments’ is the only one held outside of Spring but it is far from an isolated event. Although the Coppa Bernocchi and Tre Valli Varesine also boast a 100 plus year history it’s the so called ‘Race of the falling leaves’ that is the most revered. The late Fausto Coppi still holds the record with five wins. Of the riders still active, only Tadej Pogačar has won it more than once with two victories in the previous two outings.

This year’s 117th edition takes on an arduous 238km route between Como and Bergamo climbing over 4400m in the hills surrounding the magical lake before reaching the famous finish on the Viale Roma. Tackling a multitude of ascents, including the Madonna del Ghisallo, the Passo della Crocetta, Zambla Alta and the Colle Aperto, the course, as always, favors the climbers, especially those posses daredevil descending skills.

This year the start list is stacked with stellar talent, all lining up for one last shot at glory. At the top of the list stands last year’s winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), former world champion Remco Evenepole (Soudal-Quickstep) and many people’s favorite Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma). Other riders who will hope to out fox these three are Enric Mas (Movistar), Richard Carapaz, Ben Healy (Ef-Education-Easypost) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) in his last ever professional race.

With 100 kilometres to go there has already been plenty of drama in the race. Joint favourite Remco Evenepole has crashed but is back in the race and still looking good but the same can't be said for Enric Mas who is off the back and his race is over. Also out of contention are Lenny Martinez and Filipo Ganna and the pace is only going to get faster as the peloton closes in on the early break.

The stage is set for a blockbuster curtain call on the 2023 season. Here’s how to watch Tour of Lombardy live streams online, from anywhere.
