If you want to learn more about the history and culture of Ceará , don't miss this guided walking tour of Fortaleza. You'll see 18th-century monuments and a centenary baobab tree!

Getting to know the culture of Ceará

At 9:30 am we'll meet at the Central Market to start our guided tour of the historic center of Fortaleza and discover the charms of this city of Ceará.

First, we'll see the Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Assunção , a fortress built by the Dutch that dates back to 1649, when the city started to develop. Afterward, we'll head to Praça da Sé  where we'll see the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Joseph , a temple whose construction lasted from 1746 to 1978!

Our next stop will be Travessa Crato , a street that exudes tradition and is full of handicrafts. There, shopkeepers often invite visitors to discover their products - you'll fall in love with their artisanry! We'll then stroll through the Art-Deco district and visit the Centro Cultural Banco do Nordeste , where we'll learn more about the city's history and culture.

The tour of the historic center of Fortaleza will continue at Praça dos Leões , which dates back to 1730, along with the construction of the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário . We'll then pass by the Museu do Ceará  and Praça do Ferreira , and head to Estação das Artes , a 67,000-meter complex that used to house the train station.

Our next destination will be the Tourism Center , a space dedicated to artisanry, whose building has a peculiar history. We'll tell you all about it while we admire the pieces made by the artisans.

Finally, we'll go to Praça dos Mártires, popularly known as   the Passeio Público de Fortaleza , which offers incredible views of the sea. There you'll find the centennial baobab tree planted by Senator Pompeu in 1910.

In this last place, after about 3.5 hours, we'll end our guided tour of Fortaleza.

Visiting La Fortaleza in Old San Juan

La Fortaleza, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960, isn't just the oldest governor’s mansion in continued use in the western hemisphere; it's also one of the loveliest. Its pale blue and white facade, tiled roof, patios and wrought ironwork recall the grace of Spanish colonial architecture.

The building is the official governor's residence, and has been for centuries—and the fine galleries, period furniture, and lush gardens of the museum is well worth the visit.

The History

La Fortaleza means “The Fortress,” and it was certainly intended as such when it was completed in 1540 as part of a massive construction effort to secure the island’s defenses. It didn't do so well, though, falling to the Earl of Cumberland in 1598 and the Dutch Commander Boudewyn Hendrick in 1625.

In 1846, it was remodeled and converted for full-time use as the governor’s house. The building, which is also known as El Palacio de Santa Catalina (Santa Catalina Palace), has housed no less than 170 governors of Puerto Rico.

La Fortaleza is located at Recinto Oeste Street in Old San Juan, near the San Juan Gate. It is open from 9 to 4 on weekdays, and guided tours are offered every weekday except holidays. . Entrance to the site is free.

Hours can change due to government business or special holidays, so call ahead to confirm the building is open. For more information, call 787-721-7000 ext. 2211. There is also a tour guide office by the west end of Calle Forteleza that you can stop by in person.

La Fortaleza is located directly in the center of Old San Juan and is easily walkable from most parts of the city. There are many local buses that will let off travelers at the Terminal Covadonga San Juan. From the terminal, it will take under 15 minutes to walk to the site.

Don't Miss

One of the highlights in the entire palace is an ancient mahogany clock that stands along one of the corridors. Before he left La Fortaleza, the last Spanish governor of Puerto Rico paused in front of it and struck its face with his sword, stopping time at the very last moment of Spanish rule in the New World.

Don't Forget About Christmas

If you've bought the kids to the island for Christmas, check out what's cooking at La Fortaleza on December 25th—the children might just come away with a free gift.

Package Tours

Consider visiting La Fortaleza as part of a more extensive tour. Operators like Viator.com offer fun outings with expert guides that include a stop at the museum but include more sights. A benefit to booking a package tour is the operator will handle tickets and entry into La Fortaleza, so all you'll have to do is enjoy the scenery.

Package options include historical walking tours through the streets of Old San Juan, zipping along on a Segway, visits to the Barcadi Factory, and breezy sailing excursions through the waters of the Old San Juan Harbor.the waters of the Old San Juan Harbor.

La Fortaleza “The Fortress”

San juan, puerto rico.

The Fortress “La Fortaleza” is the official residence of the governor of Puerto Rico . It is located in the city of San Juan , in the historic district known as Old San Juan .

La Fortaleza was built between 1533 and 1540 by order of the Spanish king, Charles V. It was originally a fortress, built to protect the port of San Juan from attacks by pirates and corsairs. The original building consisted of a circular tower and four stone walls. In the 17th century, two more towers were added, and in the 18th century, an interior courtyard was built.

In 1846, La Fortaleza was remodeled to become the official residence of the governor. The remodeling was designed by the Spanish architect Fernando Trueba, and the building was given a neoclassical style.

La Fortaleza has been the official residence of 170 governors of Puerto Rico. It is a historic and cultural landmark of great importance to the island. In 1983, it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the “La Fortaleza and San Juan National Historic Site”.

The complex currently consists of a few attached buildings with formal living quarters on the second floor and private quarters on the third. It overlooks the high city walls that front the bay, and within the north perimeter of the house are sheltered gardens and a swimming pool.

Here are some interesting facts about La Fortaleza:

  • The building is made of limestone and coral blocks.
  • The original circular tower, known as the Torre del Homenaje, is still standing today.
  • It has a total of 40 rooms.
  • The interior is decorated with a variety of styles, including Spanish colonial, neoclassical, and art deco.
  • La Fortaleza has a botanical garden with over 100 species of plants.
  • The building has been the site of important historical events, such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence of Puerto Rico in 1868.
  • La Fortaleza is a symbol of the sovereignty of Puerto Rico.
  • La Fortaleza is a popular tourist destination. It is a beautiful and historic building that offers visitors a glimpse into the rich history of Puerto Rico.

La Fortaleza is open to the public for guided tours. Tours are offered Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Visit La Fortaleza

La Fortaleza, the governor’s residence, also known as the Palacio de Santa Catalina, is a cross between a medieval fortification and a royal palace. The striking blue building sits on the waterfront in Old San Juan, bordered by picturesque gardens. Join one of the guided tours around the palace to learn about the fascinating history of the site and to get a glimpse of the life of the governor of Puerto Rico.

Marvel at the clash of military and royal architecture at La Fortaleza. It was built by the Spanish as a fortification between 1532 and 1540, as evidenced by the old walls and other features. UNESCO has recognized the fortress and other landmarks in Old San Juan for their historical value.

In 1845, the fortress was turned into a royal residence, leading to its current look and earning its second name, Palacio de Santa Catalina. The interiors were remodeled and it was given a palatial blue façade. Follow in the footsteps of 170 governors who have lived in the palace. Take plenty of photos of the classical Spanish-style palace.

Explore the grounds of what is said to be the oldest executive mansion in the Western Hemisphere. Several detached buildings make up the whole palace, where you can see the old living quarters, a swimming pool and a courtyard. From the top of the palace, admire the views of the old city walls and the Bay of San Juan.

Roam the corridors of the palace, admiring the period furniture that still decorates each room. Look for the mahogany clock that comes with its own story. The last Spanish governor of Puerto Rico struck it with his sword upon hearing of the defeat of Spain. The time on its face has never changed since.

The Palacio de Santa Catalina is located in western Old San Juan. Walk here along the Paseo de la Princesa, a scenic promenade, and explore the fortress for a minimal fee. Metered parking is available nearby. La Fortaleza is open on weekdays. If you want a guided tour, book it in advance.

Donald Trump should say no to Marco Rubio as veep: ‘Does a headliner tour with his own cover band?’

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The 2024 version of “The Apprentice” is finally hurtling toward its season finale.

No, it’s not the TV show — rather, the long and winding road toward finding out who will be Donald Trump’s running mate in 2024.

Amid the oracular statements from the presumptive Republican nominee, shoe-leather reporting is offering some clarity.

Senator Marco Rubio speaking at a campaign rally in Miami, potentially on Donald Trump's vice presidential shortlist for 2024

And at least one option being considered?

An all-“Florida Man” ticket.

Per a six-byline stemwinder from  NBC News , Marco Rubio is in the mix, along with his Senate colleague JD Vance of Ohio and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.

If the reporting is accurate — and NBC has been on point throughout much of the veep search — this represents a necessary winnowing of the shortlist that has been in play since early in what passed for a Republican primary season this cycle.

NBC’s reporting also suggests that in this field of three, Rubio has some handicaps the other candidates do not. Among them: a perceived lack of enthusiasm for the job and the thorny constitutional question created by having both members of the ticket from the same state.

Regarding Rubio’s alleged lack of enthusiasm, that’s actually debatable.

Former President Donald Trump attentively listening to Senator Marco Rubio speaking at a rally in Miami, Florida

While the senator has offered buttoned-up answers to questions like “Will you take the job?” and “Where might you move to if it were offered to you?,” he also has tried, somewhat laboriously, to present himself as a pitbull defender of Trump.

A leading example: Rubio’s comments at the Trump 47 event at Mar-a-Lago this month, in which he defended the former president by clumsily and blatantly ripping off Trump’s own talking points delivered at countless rallies over the years.

“He’s made a lot of money. He has a lot of things to enjoy. He’s got a great family,” Rubio said. “Sometimes I thought, ‘Why is this guy doing this? He had a great life.’ There’s only one reason why someone like him would be in politics, with all of these hassles. … There’s only one reason; because he loves our country and he wants to save it from people that want to destroy it.”

Never miss a story.

Does Trump really need someone to put his own words into the third person? Where’s the value added? Does a headliner tour with his own cover band?

Regarding moving, Rubio could always do that. He’s flip-flopped before, such as in 2016, when he swerved Ron DeSantis and others running to take his place in the Senate by jumping back into the race, claiming the mass shooting at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub was the reason.

But Rubio is not Dick Cheney, the man who set the precedent for such a move in 2000 as George W. Bush’s running mate. Cheney was a master operator, one of the most consequential VPs in American history. No one seriously believes Rubio could do the same.

Arguably the most fatuous case for Rubio was expressed just the other day in the  New York Times . The theory: He would be singularly able “to carve a Pennsylvania-shaped slice out of the so-called blue wall of Rust Belt states.”

Not sure what that’s based on. The senator’s never been proven to be a particularly adroit coalition builder.

He won with a plurality in 2010, with Kendrick Meek and independent Charlie Crist splitting the left. In 2016, he defeated the weak Patrick Murphy, who did little to win north of Orlando. And in 2022, he benefited from the DeSantis wave to outmatch Val Demings, but underperformed compared to the rest of the slate.

Simply put, Trump doesn’t need Rubio. It’s Rubio, who has thirsted for the White House for a decade, who needs Trump.

The only Florida man who would be a real asset to the ticket may be DeSantis, who says he doesn’t want the job as he eyes promulgating his own brand in 2028.

Burgum and Vance lack the residency issues Rubio presents, which are reason enough to stay away from the all-Florida slate. Beyond that, both present more authentic enthusiasm for Trump than Rubio does.

And both come off better.

Burgum has a cool self-assurance and unflappable nature that Rubio will never learn.

Vance, though new to politics, presents like the natural heir to MAGA. And as the author of the once-ubiquitous “Hillbilly Elegy,” he clearly understands narrative.

Taylor swift plans to stay with travis kelce in kansas city during eras tour break: report.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Taylor Swift reportedly plans on putting down roots in Kansas City during her three-month break from the Eras Tour.

An insider recently told Us Weekly that the pop star, 34, plans to stay with boyfriend Travis Kelce, also 34, for the start of his NFL season.

Kelce’s season officially begins on Sept. 5 — over two weeks after the “Karma” singer finishes the European leg of her international tour, which picks back up again in mid-November.

“Taylor’s been having fun decorating his Kansas City [place],” another source told the outlet, “and she’s looking forward to the simple joys of being together.”

When Kelce bought the home, it looked recently updated with modern finishes, dark wood floors and gray walls throughout the interior.

However, Swift is known for her colorful and fun design style , meaning the home may have had a bit of a makeover.

While it’s unclear if Swift plans to spend all her time in the Midwest, she also owns homes in New York City, California, Tennessee and Rhode Island.

Meanwhile, the tight end purchased a $6 million mansion  in October 2023 shortly after going public with their romance.

Kelce originally lived in a slightly smaller $1 million home but moved after he began feeling unsafe due to the added media attention.

“People would show up at his house and leave things on his doorstep,” one of the sources told Us. “It kind of freaked him out at first. He didn’t feel safe.”

Following these incidents, Swift was reportedly worried that “bringing Travis into her world would scare him away.” However, insiders said he has “embraced it and handled it so well.”

The three-time Super Bowl champion’s new 17,000-square-foot home is located in a gated community with tight security — the perfect place for the couple to get some alone time.

“They are taking things one step at a time,” the second source said, “and enjoying their journey together.”

The pair have been doing long-distance on and off for nearly the entirety of their relationship. Despite struggling to juggle their busy schedules in the early days, the pair are reportedly in an “easy era” and have learned to make it work.

“They have daily FaceTimes when they’re apart and send cute texts to each other,” the insiders said. “They are wildly in love.”

The pair reportedly no longer feels the need “to bend over backward and travel to see each other for less than a day.”

The distance has reportedly made them even stronger, allowing them “the time and space to miss each other.”

One way they’ve learned to keep the “romance alive” has been through “little gestures and gifts” — such as custom diamond friendship bracelets and Swift’s double T diamond ring.

“Nobody has ever made Taylor feel this way,” revealed a third source. “Taylor and Travis bring out the best in each other and lift each other up. She absolutely sees this going the distance.”

Reps for Swift and Kelce did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

Trump resoundingly beat biden in debate according to flash polling, 2024 first presidential debate trump is poll dancing ... crushes biden in debate.

Donald Trump soundly defeated Joe Biden in Thursday's presidential debate in Georgia -- and, as a result, the current commander and chief should end his 2024 campaign for the White House  ... this according to several polls.

Following the Trump-Biden Q&A onstage in Atlanta, CNN conducted a snap poll of people who watched the debate and the numbers were clear: Trump turned in a much better performance than Biden by 67 to 33 percent among viewers.

Who Won The Debate?

Republicans overall agreed, putting that number even higher at 96 percent while believing that their candidate, former President Trump, is the right man for the toughest job in the world. Among Dems, 69% thought Biden won.

The key number -- 57% of debate watchers said they don't have confidence in Biden's ability to lead the country. As for Trump, 44% say they lack confidence.

Even worse, just 53 percent of debate watchers from Biden's own party credited Joe with addressing the concerns of the American people. By contrast, 85 percent of Republican debate watchers gave Trump a thumbs up when it came to tackling issues impacting voters.

CNN's poll also showed 81 percent of registered voters who watched the debate said it had zero impact on their choice for prez. Fourteen percent of those registered voters claimed the debate made them rethink their pick, but they ultimately stayed with their original candidate. Only 5 percent of those polled said they had shifted gears and would cast their vote for a different nominee.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail conducted its own poll of independent voters. A stunning 62 percent of the 805 independents polled felt Biden should drop out of the race. The poll also found Trump crushed Biden in the debate by a 68 to 32 percent margin.

There is panic in the Democratic Party, where some leaders are trying to figure out how to convince Biden to pass the torch.

50 years later, 'Little House on the Prairie' television series remains beloved by fans

tour house fortaleza

Fifty years ago, Melissa Gilbert's soft voice graced television screens throughout the country for the first time as she narrated the opening lines of the beloved western series, "Little House on the Prairie."

"If I had a remembrance book, I would mark down how it was when we left our little house in the big woods to go west to Indian territory," Gilbert says in the pilot episode of the nine-season series. Gilbert is popularly known for her role as Laura Ingalls Wilder, the narrator of the series and author of the autobiographical book series on which the television show is based.

The pilot episode of "Little House on the Prairie" first aired on March 30, 1974, and this year, several cast members are traveling throughout the country for a 50th anniversary tour. Dean Butler, who played Almanzo James Wilder (Laura's love interest) is visiting the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home & Museum in Mansfield for the annual Wilder Day celebration Sept. 27-28. Butler will be available for photo-ops and autographs. He'll also be promoting his new memoir, "Prairie Man: My Little House Life & Beyond."

In addition to Butler, Gilbert, Karen Grassle (Caroline Ingalls), Rachel Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush (Carrie), Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson), Jonathan Gilbert (Willie Oleson), Wendi Lou Lee and Brenda Turnbaugh (Grace Ingalls), Lucy Lee Flippin (Eliza Jane Wilder), and Jennifer and Michelle Steffin (Rose Wilder), are part of the anniversary tour, according to USA Today reporting .

Nicholas Inman, executive director of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home & Museum, described the series' cast as "ambassadors" for both the original "Little House" books and Wilder herself.

Considered the longest running scripted primetime television drama of its time, the "Little House" universe is comprised of an hour-and-a-half pilot, 204 episodes and three made-for-television movies, according to the Little House on the Prairie website . The final movie, "Little House: Bless All the Dear Children," aired in 1984. Over the years, the series won 17 Emmys, three Golden Globes and two Western Heritage Awards.

A later start in Mansfield

Although much of the plot, and even some of the characters, are fictionalized in the television series, the foundation of "Little House" is derived from the original nine books Wilder published about growing up in the West.

It wasn't until later in her life that Wilder began to write the books she is so well known for. The first "Little House" book, titled "Little House in the Big Woods," was published in 1932. Wilder was 65. The final book in the series, "The First Four Years," was published in 1971, after Wilder's death in 1957 at age 90.

Wilder wrote each of the nine books at her home in Mansfield, which is today a part of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home & Museum. Although fans may be more familiar with the white, two-story farmhouse that overlooks the museum's parking lot today, Wilder wrote her books in the Rock House , which also sits on the museum property. Wilder's daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, also an accomplished writer, had the home built for her parents.

How did the television series get started?

The "Little House" television series first aired only three years after the final book of the series was published.

According to Britannica , the television series was developed by screenwriter Blanche Hanalis and NBC executive producer Ed Friendly, as Friendly had acquired the rights to seven of the "Little House" books. Michael Landon, who played Wilder's father, Charles Ingalls, was the first actor to sign onto the project. He also served as a producer, writer and executive producer of the series over the years.

Friendly preferred to stay true to Wilder's books, according to Britannica , but Landon approved of "sacrificing historical accuracy in an effort to make the storylines more engaging for viewers." In the end, Friendly and Landon's disagreement on this matter led to Friendly leaving the show altogether.

Several key fictionalizations included sister Mary Ingalls' marriage to her schoolteacher, the death of Mary's baby in a fire and the Ingalls family's adoption of three more children. The Carter family, who move into the Ingalls' home, and Jenny, Almanzo's niece, are also fictional characters.

Inman said he often meets "purist" fans of both the book series and television series at the museum. On multiple occasions he has met fans who are interested in learning more about characters who were fictionalized for the television series. Even after explaining that these beloved characters did not exist in real life, some fans still chose to believe they were based on true people.

How television elevated the series' story

Inman still recalls reading his first "Little House" book in the third grade. It was the second book the series, "Farmer Boy," based on Almanzo's childhood.

Inman said that as a kid, he enjoyed taking in the book's illustrations, created by Garth Williams, and watching the television series elevated his connection to the characters.

"To go a step further from the illustrations to see them materialized into a real-life character, I think that's one reason why it was so exciting for people," Inman said. "I think it really allowed them to explore the characters in a different level, in a different way and to bring them to life off the page."

Where can you watch 'Little House'?

"Little House" can be streamed with a subscription on Peacock, Philo, Amazon Prime, Apple TV and Fandango.

Visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home & Museum

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home & Museum is located at 3060 Highway A in Mansfield, which is about an hour's drive east of Springfield. The property is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 12:30-5 p.m. Sunday from March 1 through Nov. 15.

Admission to the museum and homes is $18 for adults, $8 for children ages 6-17 and free for children under 5. The museum provides both guided and self-guided tours. Pets are not allowed on the property.
