Cyclists ride 65 miles for 2023 "Ben to the Shore Bike Tour," Ben Franklin Bridge reopened

by CBS News Philadelphia Staff

(CBS3 Philadelphia)

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- One of the biggest bike rides in the region hits the pavement Sunday and it could impact your travels.

The Ben Franklin Bridge is back open as of *;30 a.m. after temporarily closing for the annual "Ben to the Shore Bike Tour."

Thousands of people will be pedaling their way from Philly down to Atlantic City in an effort to raise money for the families of fallen and critically injured emergency workers.

That 65-mile ride started at about 7 a.m.

There will be a special honor for fallen Pennsylvania State Troopers Martin Mack and Branden Sisca. They were killed in March 2022 by an alleged drunk driver on I-95.

snapshot-2023-07-23t064953-746.jpg

Trooper Mack's widow, Stephanie is expected to make the ride. She'll be with over 2,000 other bike riders.

While the ride benefits the families of fallen and critically injured first responders, it also helps to raise funds to strengthen relations between police and the public.

Event organizers are hoping to raise $1.2 million this year for their efforts.

If you're not able to ride, you can still cheer these folks on. They'll mostly be riding on side roads from Philly to the Shore.

While the Ben Franklin was closed for part of the morning, the pedestrian walkway and PATCO services using the bridge were not affected.

Also, keep in mind that the route will go through various routes on the way to Atlantic City, so if you see bicyclists, slow down and let them through. There will be signs along the course as well.

FAMILIES BEHIND THE BADGE CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION

Founded in 2007, the Families Behind the Badge Children's Foundation was created to better allocate and manage the funds raised from the legendary Tour de Shore Charity Bike Ride. Now known as The Ben to The Shore Bike Tour, the event is a 65-mile bicycle ride from Philadelphia to Atlantic City. The bike ride started as part of the Ugly Bartender Contest - a national MS Society initiative - with 20 cyclists the first year and has grown to 2,500 riders, raising $1.25 million in 2023. This ride has become a summer staple in the Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey community.

Throughout the first 20 years of The Ben to The Shore Bike Tour, money raised went to a variety of worthy causes in the community. In 2007, after several Philadelphia Police Officers were killed in the line of duty, the organization made a change in the focus of its funding by putting a greater emphasis on supporting families of our fallen officers. Today, the FBBCF focuses on supporting the families of fallen and critically injured first responders and putting on programs that cultivate positive relationships and interactions between police officers and the children in the communities they serve.

In addition to The Ben to The Shore Bike Tour, the FBBCF hosts other fundraising events throughout the year. The Andy Chan Holiday Block Party takes place every December in Old City Philadelphia.  The event, which is normally held on 2nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets, features food trucks, drink specials from participating bars and restaurants, raffles, auctions, even a parade with law enforcement, survivors, Mummers, and celebrity guests and impersonators.  Proceeds benefit the family of Philadelphia Highway Patrol Officer Andy Chan, who suffered traumatic brain injuries after a horrific motorcycle accident in 2016.  Officer Chan survived but requires around-the-clock care from his wife Teng, who works full time and supports two young children.  The Chan Family has graciously shared the proceeds with other families who have suffered loss.  The Family Fun Ruck  is a new fundraising event featuring a 1 mile or 5K ruck along the scenic Schuylkill River Trail in Conshohocken during Veterans Day weekend.

Since 2015, the FBBCF has spearheaded an original citywide initiative called the “Police Youth Alliance.” Aimed at cultivating positive relationships and interactions between police officers and the children in the communities they serve, PYA puts uniformed officers in local schools to engage in student-friendly activities such as chess, step, reading, drumline, and carpentry.

To maximize the support given to our first responders, the FBBCF provides an immediate grant directly to the families of first responders severely injured or killed in the line of duty. The FBBCF then works closely with other organizations that exist to continuously support these families such as Philadelphia Police Survivors Fund, South Jersey FOP Lodge 56, Montgomery County Hero Fund and Bucks County Heroes Scholarship Fund.

The FBBCF is proud to give back to the Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey community and support the children of our fallen heroes.  To date, the FBBCF has raised over $12 million for the children in our community. Every year, over 80% of all proceeds go directly to the families of fallen first responders and the Police Youth Alliance program.

During the early morning hours and amid record-breaking heat last weekend, Montgomery County law enforcement was breaking a sweat as they participated in a charitable bike ride that spanned all the way into Atlantic City.

The Tour de Shore is a long-standing tradition for many in Montgomery County, especially those in law enforcement. Each year, officers, detectives, prosecutors and others take part in the challenging ride as part of the “Wheels of Justice” team to benefit children of fallen heroes.

“This is my fourth time doing it,” said Lower Pottsgrove Police Chief Michael Foltz, who was participating despite a healing neck injury. “The weather was the hottest we’ve ever had. I believe it was around 101 or 104 degrees… I was struggling with neck pain but the heat was the thing. You really had to stay hydrated the whole time.”

Montgomery Country District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman agreed.

“This year was grueling. It was the hottest day in memory for me riding Tour de Shore. For most of the ride, I was not just drinking water but pouring water over my head as I rode. I doused myself with water and within a few moments it would be dry. It was just sweltering hot,” said Ferman.

The heat wasn’t the only challenge.

“Sometimes the conditions on the roadway were not ideal. People were falling and getting injured. During the course of the ride we heard ambulances. Notwithstanding all of that, it was the best time that I ever had,” Ferman said.

“I stopped to help out with a few mishaps and to help a fellow rider with a flat tire,” said Foltz. “There were half a dozen incidents where people crashed. There were definitely more accidents than I’ve seen in the past.”

The 65-mile long bike ride, which takes place every year in July, gathers cyclists beginning at the 20th Street Irish Pub in Philadelphia and takes them on a scenic ride through the Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey region, ending at the Pub’s original location in Atlantic City, according to the pub’s Facebook page.

The bike ride began more than 25 years ago and was created by Irish Pub owners Cathy Burke and Mark O’Connor as a way to give back to the community. One of its chief causes is to provide for the families of fallen heroes, a cause which, among others, has helped raise more than $4.2 million and gain more than 2,000 bikers since the ride began. Last year alone, the Tour de Shore raised $700,000 and was able to provide funds to more than 30 beneficiaries which varied from police organizations to youth sports. This year, the race surpassed its $800,000 fundraising goal.

“We ride in honor of many heroes, but the ride has taken on a very special meaning since Montgomery County lost Plymouth Township Officer Brad Fox in 2012,” said Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman. “We ride in Brad’s memory, in honor of our fallen hero, and we ride to honor the service and sacrifice of all our first responders who put their lives on the line every single day so that the rest of us can be safe.”

Montgomery County’s “Wheels of Justice” team were among five groups that reached a fundraising incentive tier allowing a donation to be made on their behalf. In addition, the 250-member team won the John Timoney Award from the Irish Pub Tour de Shore for the largest team and highest fundraising to benefit the Irish Pub Children’s Foundation. Since 2009, when the team started, they have raised $335,000 to support fallen heroes, according to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.

“We do it for the cause and the kids and we know where the funds are going,” said Foltz. “It’s always an enjoyable experience. People think you’re crazy for doing it but I enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship and it’s for a great cause.”

In addition to Foltz, the “Wheels of Justice” team members for the 2015 ride included Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman, First Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele, Upper Merion Police Chief Thomas Nolan, Lower Merion Police Chief Michael J. McGrath, Sgts. Thomas McCloy and Michael Ponto and officer John Schmalbach of Pottstown Police.

“I know if something were to happen to me, to know that those funds are there to help my family and my children, it’s a good thing to know. When you get to the end and you see the portraits of the officers that gave their lives and the families that benefit from the ride, it’s a great feeling,” said Foltz.

Carl Hessler contributed to this report.

Katt Williams & other stars to cure spring comedy fever near Delaware. How to get tickets

tour de shore philadelphia 2023

Delawareans are warned to protect their funny bones this spring because Katt Williams is on the loose and he's not afraid to tickle you senseless.

As a heads up, his show at The Liacouras Center in Philadelphia is nearly sold-out.

Williams and over a dozen other comedians are looking to turn people's frowns upside down near the First State and Philly this season, including a star from the sketch comedy series "Chappelle's Show." Here's who is coming and how to get tickets.

Ali Wong, Philadelphia

There are only a few tickets left for both of Ali Wong's shows at The Met Philadelphia. The comedian, writer and actress has been tapped to perform in the Netflix is a Joke Festival in Los Angeles in May, a who's who event featuring big names from Katt Williams and Kevin Hart to Jerry Seinfeld. Wong delivered laughs about motherhood in "Hard Knock Wife," her second Netflix special in 2018.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The Met Philadelphia (858 N. Broad St., Philadelphia) at 7 p.m. Friday, April 5 & Saturday, April 6. Tickets are $64-$173. Visit themetphilly.com .

Seth Myers, Philadelphia

The host of NBC's "Late Night With Seth Meyers " is doing two comedy sets on one night this weekend and the first show is sold-out. Seth Myers is all about tackling the day's top stories and politics on TV. Now he's coming to the City of Brotherly Love to make the audience giggle in person.

Miller Theater (250 S. Broad St., Philadelphia) at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6. Tickets are $39.75-$80 (plus fees). Visit sethmeyers.com or (215) 893-1999.

Katt Williams, Philadelphia

There's a low-ticket warning for Katt Williams' comedy show. Williams is one of the hottest comedians of the year. He broke the internet in January when he appeared on Shannon Sharpe's "Club Shay Shay" podcast and took aim at several comedians including Kevin Hart. That episode has over 64 million views on YouTube. The arena headliner used that publicity to his advantage as he continues his “The Dark Matter” tour. Katt is also featured in the upcoming Netflix is a Joke Festival.

The Liacouras Center (1776 N. Broad St., Philadelphia) at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 7. Tickets are $99 to $250-plus. Visit kattwilliamslive.com or (215) 204-2400.

Trey Kennedy, Wilmington

Before Instagram and TikTok focused on short-form video, there was a platform named Vine. Trey Kennedy blew up from Vine and attracted millions of followers. The Oklahoman, who didn't expect to become an entertainer, is now kidding around on his "Grow Up Comedy Tour."

The Grand (818 N. Market St., Wilmington) at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 18. Tickets are $45-$140. Visit thegrandwilmington.org or (302) 652-5577.

Joe DeRosa, Wilmington

Joe DeRosa hasn't been shy about sharing with folks that his magic pill for coping with depression has been to gobble up a family-picnic-sized bucket of chicken from KFC. Maybe you can relate to him. Or not. Either way, you can expect DeRosa, who hosts the "We'll See You in Hell" podcast, to cut loose on stage and leave his greasy fingerprints all over The Queen when he's in town.

The Queen (500 N. Market St., Wilmington) at 7 p.m. Friday, April 19. Tickets are $29 (plus fees). Visit thequeenwilmington.com or (302) 400-7020.

Stephen Buda and more, Milton

Comedy is the best medicine, and the doctor has prescribed a large dosage of "Spring Silliness" with comics Erik Terrell, host Keith Purnell and headliner "Buda" Stephen Buda. The headliner is an in-your-face Italian and Ukrainian who used to tip the scales at 520 pounds. Buda tells it how it is and has a soft spot for delivering impersonations.

Milton Theater (110 Union St., Milton) at 8 p.m. Friday, April 19. Tickets start at $12.60. Visit miltontheatre.com or (302) 684-3038.

Kathleen Madigan, Wilmington

Is Sasquatch really or thing or nah? Kathleen Madigan shares the plan she'd use if she ever came across the elusive monster in her latest comedy special "Hunting Bigfoot," an hour of stand-up where she also focuses on her family, wine and the road.

The Grand (818 N. Market St., Wilmington) at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 20. Tickets are $49-$64. Visit thegrandwilmington.org or (302) 652-5577.

Lewis Black, Wilmington

He often looks grumpy like a "don't stand on my lawn" kind of guy. That's become a trademark of the 75-year-old Lewis Black , who’ll stop by Delaware on his farewell tour: "Goodbye Yeller Brick Road, The Final Tour." The comedian was feisty about adjusting to the post-pandemic world in his 2023 comedy special "Tragically, I Need You."

The Grand (818 N. Market St., Wilmington) at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 2. Tickets are $61-$91. Visit thegrandwilmington.org or (302) 652-5577.

Jake Johannsen, Arden

Who could devote minutes to talking about a toaster on stage? Jake Johannsen certainly can. And he can chat it up about aliens, too. The veteran comic with a bizarre perspective on life has won over audiences through his subtle and witty style of comedy.

Arden Gild Hall (2126 The Highway, Arden) at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 11. Tickets for general admission are $33.99. Visit ardenconcerts.com or (302) 475-3126.

Tu Rae, Kleon, Hamburger & more, Wilmington

A packed night of laughs and tunes are going down for a special Mother's Day comedy jam. With music by DJ Mega Skills , guests will have to survive a tickle test conducted by comics such as internet sensation Keith Norman (KleonTheComedian) , who boasts over 500,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram. There's also Ashima Franklin , Hamburger, Tu Rae , Charles Walden , Coby Jackk and Denny Live!

The Queen (500 N. Market St., Wilmington) at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 12. Tickets are $40-$85. Visit thequeenwilmington.com or (302) 400-7020.

Tony Rock, Philadelphia

Superstar Chris Rock isn't the only famous comedian in his family. His veteran little brother Tony Rock has carved out his own path and is coming to split sides and take no prisoners when he performs five sets over three nights in Philly this spring.

Helium Comedy Club (2031 Sansom St., Philadelphia) at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 23; 7:30 & 10 p.m. Friday, May 24; and 7:30 and 10 p.m. Saturday, May 25. Tickets are $22-$42. Visit philadelphia.heliumcomedy.com or (215) 496-9001.

Pauly Shore, Philadelphia

Not many comedians can sport a red Afro and spandex while convincing you that they perfectly resemble fitness icon Richard Simmons. But Pauly Shore shocked the internet earlier this year when he pulled this unusual feat off in a teaser for the upcoming short film "The Court Jester." Shore became a household name in the '90s as the star of MTV's "Totally Pauly," which led to him to roles in movies like "Bio-Dome," "In the Army Now" and "Jury Duty."

Helium Comedy Club (2031 Sansom St., Philadelphia) at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 30; 7:30 & 10 p.m., Friday, May 31; and 7:30 & 10 p.m. Saturday, June 1. Tickets are $27-$37. Visit philadelphia.heliumcomedy.com or (215) 496-9001.

Thousands Pedal From Philly To Atlantic City For Annual Tour de Shore

July 19, 2015 / 12:08 PM EDT / CBS Philadelphia

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The excessive heat and humidity did not stop thousands of cyclists from biking their way from Philadelphia to Atlantic City for an annual ride benefiting children in need and families of fallen first responders.

The 28th annual Tour de Shore raised $820-thousand for the nonprofit Irish Pub Children's Foundation.

"This money goes back to the community," says organization president, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan, "and it does incredible work."

Sullivan says participants of the 65-mile bike ride are fueled by the comradery.

"When you start to think you're not going to make it any further, the people around you rally around you and cheer you on," he says, "and somehow you find a way to make it to Atlantic City."

There is strong law enforcement presence for the event, with some of the money going to families of the fallen.

Colby Cassidy lost her father back in 2007, Philadelphia Police Officer Chuck Cassidy.

"You ride for them and you ride in honor of them," Cassidy says. "It gives you an extra push when you don't think you're gonna make it to the next rest stop. They do all of this for us, the least we can do is just push ourselves to the limit."

The largest team is Wheels of Justice, a 250 member squad led by Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman. She says many groups are represented, but most importantly they're all one.

"On race day we're all one team," Ferman says. "We're all riding together, all in solidarity for those who put their lives on the line for us."

The race began at the Irish Pub in Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square and ended at the Irish Pub at St. James Place in Atlantic City.

SNYDE | Secret Service really did threaten to taser Travis Kelce

President Joe Biden invites tight end Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs to speak during an event on the South Lawn of the White House on May 31, 2024 in Washington, DC. President Biden hosted the Chiefs to honor their 2024 Super Bowl win. (Andrew Harnik/Getty Images)

On this week’s episode of their “New Heights” podcast, the Kansas City Chiefs tight-end, 34, told big brother and ex-Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce that the warning was “real.”

“The Secret Service that’s all over the White House, they weren’t too happy with me,” said the younger Kelce , whose team won their fourth Lombardi Trophy in February , when they beat the San Francisco 49ers.

During Friday’s visit, the football star was surprised when President Biden actually invited him to speak at the podium — which he spontaneously took to during the team’s 2023 White House appearance.

“It’s nice to see you all yet again. I’m not gonna lie, President Biden, they told me if I came up here I’d get tased,” said Kelce. “So, I’m gonna go back to my spot.”

He said he rubbed Secret Service personnel the wrong way during the Chiefs’ appearance at the White House following their 2023 Super Bowl win when he went off-script by spontaneously approaching the podium.

“When I walked in [this time], we had about four or five Secret Service members come up to me and go, ‘You know that if you go up to that podium, we are authorized to tase you,'” said Kelce. “‘It is actually ordered for us to tase you.'”

The team’s latest appearance on Pennsylvania Avenue took place nearly a year into Kelce’s love story with Taylor Swift, who cheered on the Chiefs at games throughout the season, including the Super Bowl . Their globetrotting romance has catapulted Kelce into a new stratosphere of recognition.

The couple was shown in a photo in the teaser for Kelce’s sit-down Thursday interview with “Good Morning America.”

Kelce, who’s supported Swift at many of her Eras Tour shows around the world, says in the preview that he’s “living the dream.”
