PGA Championship Round 3 live updates, leaderboard: Morikawa, Schauffele share lead after wild Moving Day at Valhalla

Shane lowry posted a 29 on his front nine on saturday, and nearly set a new record by the end of his round.

It's Moving Day at Valhalla.

Saturday at the PGA Championship started with Xander Schauffele leading the field by a single stroke. He's led the entire way so far, which is something only five other golfers in the last 40 years has pulled off.

His lead, though, didn't last. Collin Morikawa quickly overtook him on the back nine, though the two both birdied the 18th to get to 15-under on the week. That gave them a one-shot lead over what's a very packed leaderboard .

Shane Lowry nearly set a new record , too. He carded a 9-under 62, which made him just the fifth player in major championship history to ever post that score in a round. It matched Schauffele's course-record at Valhalla that he set on Thursday, and moved him up to 13-under on the week — which was good for second when he hit the clubhouse. Lowry just barely missed a birdie putt at the 18th, which would've set the record.

Sahith Theegala is alone in third headed into Sunday at 14-under. Bryson DeChambeau, who eagled the last with a chip-in, and Viktor Hovland will join Lowry at 13-under.

Tiger Woods, however, is not in the mix . He fell to 7-over after a rough start on Friday, and was among those who missed the cut. The good news, is the weather looks good after a long day of rain on Friday.

Leaderboard Update:

With 18 holes to go, here's how things stand at Valhalla:

T1. Xander Schauffele (-15)

T1. Collin Morikawa

3. Sahith Theegala (-14)

T4. Shane Lowry (-13)

T4. Bryson DeChambeau

T4. Viktor Hovland

T7. Justin Rose (-12)

T7. Robert MacIntyre

More on the logjam that sits atop the leaderboard at Valhalla.

Morikawa, Schauffele birdie 18

Collin Morikawa birdied the 18th to finish out his 4-under 67 round. That moves him to 15-under on the week. Xander Schauffele matched him with an easy birdie tap-in for his 68.

The two will enter Sunday tied at 15-under in the lead.

Sahith Theegala left his eagle opportunity short, but that's the perfect lag putt. He's looking at a short birdie now at the 18th, which would move him to 14-under.

Schauffele right back

Xander Schauffele just birdied No. 17, which brings him back to 14-under and into a share of the lead.

The final group is now teeing off at 18.

Bryson DeChambeau now right in it

Well that's how you finish a round. DeChambeau just chipped in for eagle at the 18th, which brought him to 13-under and just one back from the lead. DeChambeau carded a 4-under 67 on Saturday.

Leaderboard udpdate

With the final group headed to the 17th, here's where things stand.

Leaderboard:

1. Morikawa (-14)

T2. Lowry (-13)

T2. Schauffele

T2. Theegala

T5. Rose (-12)

T5. MacIntyre

Collin Morikawa out in front

Well, that 4-way tie lasted all of about a minute.

Collin Morikawa just snuck in a birdie putt, and he's now alone in first at 14-under.

What a wild swing of events on the 15th green.

FOR THE SOLO LEAD 💥 This one made Collin nervous. #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/mtRx5pvpAu — Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) May 18, 2024

Xander Schauffele doubles, and we've got a 4-way tie

Xander Schauffele just doubled at the 15th, and we've now suddenly got a 4-way tie for the lead. An incredible two-shot swing after Sahith Theegala's chip-in birdie.

Schauffele, Morikawa, Lowry and Theegala are all tied at the top at 13-under.

Sahith Theegala again!

Sahith Theegala isn't going away. He just chipped-in perfectly from the thick stuff behind the green at the 15th for yet another birdie. He's at 13-under now.

SAHITH! AGAIN! pic.twitter.com/l5M33OQjUM — Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) May 18, 2024

Xander Schauffele just went long into the crowd behind the green on No. 15. A rare miss for him.

That is just the 2nd missed green in regulation in the last 27 holes for Xander Schauffele — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) May 18, 2024

Xander Schauffele back up by 2

Xander Schauffele's lead is back to two. After a relatively slow start to the day, Schauffele now has two birdies thru five holes on the back nine. That dropped him to 15-under on the week, two shots ahead of Morikawa and Lowry.

A big birdie for the leader. Xander Schauffele rolls one in on the 14th. pic.twitter.com/UxLqcDFm4r — Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) May 18, 2024

Justin Thomas gets to 10-under

Justin Thomas just barely missed an eagle putt at 18, but that left him with an easy birdie to get to 10-under. The Louisville native is just 5 back now heading into the final round.

Sahith Theegala is bouncing right back. After a back-to-back bogeys on the front nine, Theegala's now made four birdies in his last five holes. He's tied for fourth at 12-under.

Shane Lowry's scorecard is perfect.

What a round from @ShaneLowryGolf ! Today's 62 is his career low and moves him just one shot off the lead @PGAChampionship . pic.twitter.com/1ALGDq5iCC — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 18, 2024

It's a 62 for Lowry

Shane Lowry had an 12-foot putt for history. It wasn't meant to be. Had Lowry birdied 18, he would have had the first 61 in major golf history. He missed, and will settle for merely tying history with the fifth 62 ever.

Shane Lowry: 5th round of 62 in men's major championship history; four have come in last 3 majors Lowry gained 6.4 strokes putting in today's round, a career high. His 10.6 strokes gained putting this week are the most through 3 rounds by anyone in a PGA Tour event in 2024. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) May 18, 2024

Schauffele to 14-under

It's a shootout, and if you want to stay on top, ya better keep making birdies. That's what Xander Schauffele is doing. He's poured in another one, this time from distance on 10. One shot lead over Lowry and Morikawa.

Shane Lowry has 61 in sight

There have been four rounds of 62 in major history. There has never been a 61. With a gettable par 5 in front of him, Shane Lowry could do it. A birdie at 17 puts him at 57 shots on the day. A birdie on 18 and we'll get the lowest round in major golf history.

He's also moved into a share of the lead (-13) with Schauffele.

Justin Thomas birdies the really hard way

Justin Thomas hit a terrible drive to the par-3 14th, putting it 30 yards left of the hole. Buried in deep rough, with a trap in his way, he flopped it like Phil and then ... watched it drop for the birdie. He's got it to 9-under.

Jordan Spieth move to 8-under

Jordan Spieth has spent the last six PGAs trying to complete the career grand slam. But not since 2019 has he been in contention.

He wasn't through Rounds 1 and 2 this year, but he has made his move on moving day. A 4-under 67 has him to 8-under on the tournament. He'll have to go really low Sunday to make it happen. But he's not out of it, something he hasn't been able to say in a few years.

Justin Rose has entered the picture

Rose has been coming all day. A birdie at 15 has him to 6-under for the day, 11-under for the tournament, in a tie for fourth.

Schauffele back on top

Xander Schauffele absolutely blasted his tee shot on the par-5 seventh. A 247-yard approach and two putts later, birdie, 13-under, leader.

Tight leaderboard

How tight is it? We've got 21 players within four shots of the lead. The list includes seven major winners.

Lowry ... again

We've got a three-way tie atop the leaderboard. Shane Lowry with another birdie at 14. He's got it to 12-under along with Xander and Morikawa.

Scottie Scheffler is bouncing back

After going 4-over on his first four holes, Scheffler has birdied two of his last three. But that last one didn't come without some drama. It wasn't a long putt — about 6 feet. Pretty routine. He didn't hit a good putt, but managed to catch the left lip and down it went.

He's got it back to 7-under.

Shane Lowry continues his heater

A lengthy roll in for birdie at 13 for Shane Lowry has him to 11-under, just one back of the lead. After firing a 6-under 29 on the front, he'd cooled off a bit. That bird at 13 was his first on the back. Still, at 6-under on his round, 62 isn't out of the question.

Tournament officials tried to shoo them away, but weren’t willing to jump in the water to grab ‘em. pic.twitter.com/L7I2hBJUs2 — Jay Busbee (@jaybusbee) May 18, 2024

Collin Morikawa jumps into the lead

Collin Morikawa finally got one to fall, and Xander Schauffele's birdie putt to match went just right of the cup. That means that Morikawa has joined Schauffele at 12-under, which is two shots clear of the rest of the field.

Schauffele is even so far today, and 1-over thru his last 13 holes.

Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa are still locked in at 1 and 2 on the leaderboard, but there's a big group tied for third at 10-under.

Rory back in it?

Rory McIlroy is trying to work his way back into this. He just made three straight birdies to close his front nine, and four of his last six. He's at 8-under now as he makes the turn.

Scottie Scheffler slips again

Things aren't going well for Scottie Scheffler today. He just hit it behind the fence on the 4th, and then chunked his approach up to the green. He still saved bogey, but he's at 5-under now for the week.

Shane Lowry goes low

Shane Lowry is taking full advantage of Moving Day. He just shot a 29 on the front nine to get to 10-under on the week. Suddenly, he's just two off the lead.

Scottie Scheffler double, bogey

Well, that's not a great start for Scottie Scheffler. He just doubled the second, which dropped him to T14. He then barely missed a par save at the third.

Scheffler is now 3 over thru 3 holes today, which has him 6 shots back of Xander Schauffele.

Scottie Scheffler's normal caddie, Ted Scott, won't be on the bag today. Scott flew home to attend his daughter's high school graduation. This was planned well ahead of time. Scheffler's friend and PGA Tour chaplain Brad Payne will take his place today.

Xander Schauffele has led after both rounds at the PGA Championship. Historically, though, that's not the best sign for him.

Viktor hovland leads by a touchdown in pursuit of $18 million payday at tour championship, share this article.

tour championship leaderboard round 3

ATLANTA — It’s Viktor Hovland’s world right now; we’re just living in it.

The 25-year-old Norwegian shot a 4-under 66 at East Lake Golf in Atlanta to improve to 20-under par and open a six-stroke lead at the Tour Championship, the third and final leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Hovland carded back-to-back birdies at Nos. 6 and 7, the latter a 12-foot putt. He held a four-stroke advantage at 18 under when play was suspended due to lightning in the area.

“We thought last Sunday was good,” CBS’s Frank Nobilo said. “This is every bit as good.”

Viktor Hovland strokes gained around the green ranks on PGA Tour Last season: 191st This season entering PGA: 170th Since PGA Championship began: 20th — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) August 26, 2023

Hovland came back out when play resumed and made back-to-back birdies at Nos. 12 and 13. He made a bogey at 14, but drilled a 6-iron to 15 feet at the water-guarded 212-yard par-3 15th.

“The pin was on the right which made the green feel a little bigger for me,” he said. “It was a perfect 6-iron.”

While a touchdown seems like it should be an insurmountable edge — it is the largest 54-hole lead lost in Tour history — Scottie Scheffler blew a lead of the same amount last year in trying to win the $18 million winner’s prize. That’s over 192 million Krone for Hovland.

“That’s a lot of cash,” he said. “But we’re here to win tournaments. There’s a lot of hungry players behind me who can shoot 61 tomorrow. I’ve got to be ready.”

Schauffele earns spot in final group

2023 Tour Championship

If it’s late August at East Lake, Xander Schauffele must be making birdies at the Tour Championship.

Schauffele is an ATM at the playoff finale, qualifying for his seventh consecutive year and has never finished worse that T-7. He has the most top-5 finishes without winning the FedEx Cup title, though he did win the Tour Championship in 2017 before Starting Strokes was implemented.

Schauffele started the week T-11 and has steadily climbed the leaderboard, earning a spot in the final group alongside Hovland. After rounds of 67-64, Schauffele made three birdies in his first seven holes, but made three bogeys that canceled out two more birdies on the way to the clubhouse and a round of 2-under 68. It marked his 24 th under-par score in 27 career rounds at East Lake Golf Club. Expect another one on Sunday, but it better be a low one if Scahuffele’s going to catch the leader.

“I know what I need to do,” Schauffele said. “I need to go out and try and put as much pressure on him tomorrow on that front nine as I can and hope for the best.”

Morikawa and Bradley share third

2023 Tour Championship

Morikawa, who was the only player in the 30-man field to play bogey-free the first two rounds, made a double bogey at the fifth after his lob shot landed in a greenside bunker and he failed to get it up and down. He dropped two more shots with bogeys at Nos. 10 and 11 and waited until No. 16 to make his lone birdie of the day.

After shooting a tournament record 61-64 for the first 36 holes, Morikawa posted 3-over 73 to drop to 13 under.

Bradley is tied for third with Morikawa. He made four birdies and four bogeys in an up-and-down round of 70. Bradley made a deuce at the difficult par-3 15th for the third straight day.

Scheffler and Rahm falter

2023 Tour Championship

Scheffler and Jon Rahm are tied going into the final round of the final event of the FedEx Cup. But after dueling for the FedEx Cup lead for most of the season, they find themselves nine off the pace set by Hovland, who left them in the dust. It didn’t help that the leading candidates for Player of the Year both fired a dud on “Moving Day.”

Rahm hit in the water left off the tee on No. 8 and made double bogey, added a bogey at 11 and made just two birdies en route to shooting 71.

Scheffler didn’t make a birdie until 18 and shot 3-over 73. He took three putts at 7, missing from just over a foot and even after one-putting the final four holes, he ranks 25 th out of the 30-man field in Strokes Gained: Putting.

The heat is on

2023 Tour Championship

Rickie Fowler looks over the fifth green during the second round of the TOUR Championship golf tournament at East Lake Golf Club. Mandatory Credit: John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

When Rickie Fowler finished his round, he signed autographs, sweat dripping down his face, as if it was a balmy 70 degrees, not 99 degrees with a heat index of 105 degrees. But Fowler knew where he was headed once he finished signing.

“I’ve got to get in a cold plunge,” he said.

Eventually, the searing heat won out and play was suspended at 5:28 p.m. ET for one hour and 15 minutes due to lightning in the area. (It was termed a code red.) The storm provided some relief for the rest of the play, which finished just before 8:30 p.m.

Sunday’s temperature is expected to drop down to 97, and the players will take the two degree dip  but when it’s that hot, it’s just uncomfortable.

PGA Championship Round 3: LIVE updates and scores

Stay up to date with all the action from valhalla golf club..

Welcome to live day three updates from the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club.

At the halfway stage all of the talk was around world number one Scottie Scheffler after the golfer was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer and reckless driving ahead of the second round.

Scheffler was released from jail just in time to make it back for his tee time and he carded a six-under 66 to sit primed for a weekend charge.

The reigning Masters champion trailed Xander Schauffele by three strokes.

Elsewhere, Collin Morikawa , Sahith Theegala, Thomas Detry, Mark Hubbard, Austin Eckroat, Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland and LIV Golf 's Bryson DeChambeau were inside the top-10.

World number two Rory McIlroy was stuck in neutral on Friday and, despite comfortably making the cut he is considerably off the pace on five-under.

McIlroy will need a strong showing on Saturday afternoon if he is to have any hopes of landing his fifth major title and breaking his 10-year major drought.

The defending champion, Brooks Koepka , is not out of things by any stretch of the imagination.

Koepka fired a 68 on Friday afternoon to sit in T-12 heading into the weekend.

It's tight at the top as Theegala, Schauffele and Morikawa all birdie the final hole.

Schauffele and Morikawa are tied for the lead, but the chasing pack is absolutely stacked full of talent.

It promises to be an excellent final day at Valhalla Golf Club tomorrow.

Let's take a look at the leaderboard.

Scheffler -7 (73)

Scheffler finishes with a birdie to close out what must have been a frustrating day.

After an understandably stressful day yesterday, it would appear that it finally caught up with him today.

Today's over-par round also ended Scheffler's record streak of 41 consecutive rounds of par or better, which had been going since August 26, 2023.

Schauffele -14 (17)

Amending for his error on the 15th, Schauffele holes a beauty of a birdie putt on the 17th to rejoin Morikawa at the top of the leaderboard.

DeChambeau -13 (67), Hovland -13 (66), Eckroat -10 (69)

Bryson brings the noise on 18 with a fantastic chip in eagle.

The LIV Golf star now sits at 13-under, just one shot back from the lead.

Hovland also managed to pick up a shot on the final hole with a tap-in birdie, leaving him alongside his playing partner in a congested group in second place.

Hovland -12 (17)

A birdie for Hovland on 17 moves him into the congested pack at 12-under.

What can he muster on the final hole?

Finau -10 (70)

A solid round from Finau finishes agonisingly close to an eagle on 18.

He sits at ten-under four back from Morikawa as things stand.

Tony Finau

MacIntyre -12 (66)

MacIntyre caps off an excellent round of golf with a solid birdie on the 18th to move to 12-under.

Plenty to be proud of today for the Scot.

Morikawa -14, Theegala -13, Schauffele -13 (15)

The 15th has been an eventful hole.

Schauffele has had a shocker from the rough and cards his first double bogey of the week.

On the other hand, we witness some exceptional play from Theegala, who chips in with precision, while Morikawa demonstrates his prowess with the putter by sinking his birdie putt, propelling him into the solo lead.

We might look back at this hole come Sunday as a pivotal moment in deciding the eventual winner.

Schauffele -15 (14)

Xander holes a lengthy putt on the 14th hole to extend his lead to two shots.

Could that be the kickstart his round needs?

Thomas -10 (67)

So close to an eagle to finish for Thomas, but he has to settle for a tap in birdie on the 18th hole.

The local favourite is in a good spot heading into Sunday.

Hovland -11 (15)

Birdies are pouring in all over the course, and it's Viktor Hovland's time to get in on the action as he fires home from close range to move to 11-under on the 15th hole.

Viktor Hovland

Macintyre -11 (16)

Bobby Mac holes another long-range birdie putt to move within three of the lead.

Theegala -12 (13)

A lovely putt on the 13th hole sees Theegala move to 12-under, two shots back from Schauffele.

Sahith Theegala

McIlroy -8 (68)

After a number of missed opportunities, McIlroy finishes with a birdie thanks to a tasty chip shot.

It's been a frustrating day for the four-time major champ. Had his putter not gone cold, he could have been right near the top of the leaderboard.

Currently five shots back, he will need to play some truly special golf tomorrow if he wants to improve his major tally.

Scheffler -7 (13)

There are so many birdies going in at the moment, and it's hard to keep up.

This time, Scheffler drops one in after a magnificent approach shot on the 13th hole.

It might be too little too late for the world No.1, but it's good to see nonetheless.

Lowry -13 (62)

What a wonderful round of golf from Shane Lowry.

He came an inch away from shooting 61, which would have set a new record for the lowest score in major championship history.

Instead, he will have to settle for equalling the record of 62, an accolade shared with the current leader, Xander Schauffele.

Rose finishes with a birdie to card a 64. A fine round, slightly overshadowed by the excellence of his playing partner.

Shane Lowry

Theegala -11 (11)

Morikawa and Schauffele couldn't manage birdies from close range, but Theegala showed them how it's done, claiming his third birdie in a row with a well-judged putt.

Schauffele -14 (10)

Schauffele retakes the solo lead with a birdie on the 10th.

This is honestly one of the best days of golf I've seen in quite some time.

The birdies are flying in from everywhere.

Lowry -13 (17)

Shane Lowry has been a joy to watch today.

He gets his ninth birdie of the day on the 17th and now has a share of the lead at 13-under.

He needs a birdie on the final hole to shoot 61, the lowest score in major championship history.

McIlroy -7 (16)

After such a good start, McIlroy is now dropping down the leaderboard.

The Northern Irishman three-putts the 16th for bogey and moves back to seven-under

He will need something special in the next three holes to have a chance tomorrow.

Rory McIlroy

Finau -11 (12)

Tony Finau is putting the after-burners on; his putter is red hot right now.

He's made four birdies in a row and sits just two back from Schauffele.

Thomas -9 (14)

What a shot from Thomas. Having missed the green on the par-three 14th, he holes out from the rough for a miraculous birdie.

The crowd absolutely loved that one.

Spieth -8 (67)

Searching for the career grand slam, Spieth has gone about his business quietly, but a 67 today has put him in a good spot for Sunday.

Sat five shots back, he will have some serious work to do tomorrow, but he's certainly given himself a chance.

tour championship leaderboard round 3

2024 PGA Championship: round 3 Saturday tee times, pairings and featured groups

The tee times for today’s third round at the 2024 PGA Championship took a while to be confirmed , as a number of players still had to complete round two at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

Play was suspended due to darkness at 8:41pm yesterday, with 18 members of the 156-man field yet to finish their second round . PGA Championship organisers initially said that round two would resume at 7:15am ET today; however, heavy fog pushed back the start of the day’s action until “30 minutes after conditions are playable”. It was estimated that round three’s tee times would be scheduled between 11:17am and 1:40pm ET and this has since been clarified as resuming at 9:40am.

It has now been confirmed that the the third round of the PGA Championship begin at 11:28 a.m. ET.

The PGA website clarified that “Round 3 will feature split tees with players going off in threesomes off of Nos. 1 and 10. The final pairing teeing off hole 1, consisting of Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala, tee off at 1:40 p.m.”

Round two delayed after fatal accident

Day two’s play was delayed by an hour and 20 minutes, after a worker at the PGA Championship was hit by a shuttle bus on a busy road leading to the entrance to the Valhalla Golf Club. The victim, named as Louisville resident John Mills, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the aftermath of the accident, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was then arrested by Louisville police , for allegedly disobeying the commands of an officer who was re-directing traffic outside the golf course.

The Louisville Metropolitan Police Department says Scheffler accelerated past the officer and dragged him to the ground, injuring him . The 27-year-old has been charged with four offences including the second-degree assault of a police officer, which is a felony.

Who leads the PGA Championship as things stand?

Following his tournament-record round of 62 on Thursday, Xander Schauffele remains in the lead at Valhalla , after the American finished at 12 under yesterday, having shot a three-under 68 in round two. Schauffele, who is chasing the first major-tournament victory of his career, is followed on the leaderboard by 2020 winner Collin Morikawa, whose round of 65 left him at 11 under.

How did Scheffler play after his arrest?

After being released by Louisville police, Scheffler returned to Valhalla to shoot a five-under round of 66 , leaving the Masters champion tied for fourth place on nine under.

In a statement given to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, who witnessed his arrest, Scheffler described the incident as a “misunderstanding” . “It was a very chaotic situation - understandably so, considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier,” he said. “And there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions.”

He added: “Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”

What is the projected cut line at the PGA Championship?

The PGA Tour lists the projected cut line in Kentucky as one under .

Those who are set to miss the cut include 15-time major winner Tiger Woods , who finished day two at seven over . Woods, 48, has won the PGA Championship on four occasions in his glittering career, most recently in 2007. Two-time major champion Jon Rahm is another big name poised to be eliminated before round three, having ended day two at even par.

Phil Mickelson won the second of this two PGA Championships as recently as 2021, but is four over par and about to miss out, as is world No. 4 Ludvig Aberg, who came second at April’s Augusta Masters. Aberg is one shot over the expected cut line

After a tragic, dramatic day at the Valhalla Golf Club on Friday, the PGA Championship will head into its final two rounds this weekend.

2023 Tour Championship leaderboard: Collin Morikawa rockets into three-way tie on top with career-best 61

Morikawa's incredible round pushed him into a tie with keegan bradley and viktor hovland ahead of scottie scheffler.

The first round of the 2023 Tour Championship had enough twists and turns that it already looks quite different than when it started. Three different golfers caught and surpassed a surprisingly mediocre Scottie Scheffler, and after building an early lead based on all his work leading up to the Tour Championship, Scheffler now finds himself down one going into Friday's second round of the 2023 FedEx Cup Playoffs final.

Though the scores are close enough right now, it's still going to be extremely difficult for anyone to beat Scheffler on Sunday. Morikawa shot the best PGA Tour score of his career -- a 61 with an eagle -- and yet he's still just one up after 18 holes. What he did is completely unsustainable, and Scheffler is unlikely to lose two strokes to the field over the next three rounds.

Joining Morikawa (-10) on top are Keegan Bradley, who similarly impressed with a 63, and Viktor Hovland, who shot a 68. All three played bogey free golf as Scheffler made three bogeys and a triple on the day.

So, it's gotten a bit interesting for some of the presumed favorites. (We'll get to Rory McIlroy and his strange day in a moment). First, let's take at Thursday's first round for the leaders and what to expect the rest of the week.

T1. Viktor Hovland, Keegan Bradley Collin Morikawa (-10)

Morikawa made 11 threes the round after Viktor Hovland made 12 to win the BMW Championship last Sunday. Take that into consideration if you're wondering whether to be excited about the Ryder Cup in a month. The two now co-lead a tournament that will award $18 million to its winner. The two-time major champion led the field from tee to green and on approach shots and he was top seven in the field in every other category. That's ... probably going to get it done.

The question now is whether Morikawa can get it done in a PGA Tour event for the first time since the 2021 Open Championship at Royal St. George's. He poke afterward about how -- even though his numbers this year have been good -- you don't win tournaments only by putting up good numbers.

"It's kind of surprising that my strokes gained is that good [this year]," said Morikawa. "It shows that I've been working on the right things. But it takes ... there's a skill that you just can't measure for winning. You ask the best winners in the history, there's a skill that you just can't tell someone how to win, you can't teach someone how to win, you got to learn how to win. It's still in there. I know it is. It's just having things go your way and being consistent like today, not giving away shots, not hitting the poor shot that might deter a round, not making a bogey or two here today."

Hovland is probably the guy to watch here given where he started (-8) and how much Morikawa (started seven back of Hovland) and Bradley (started five back of Hovland) must do over the course of 72 hole to remain in front. Last week's BMW Championship winner is in the driver's seat.

One interesting sidebar here: Bradley is potentially playing for a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. He's been vocal and adamant about making that happen, and now he has a pretty compelling opportunity.

Other contenders

4. Scottie Scheffler (-9) T5. Adam Schenk, Russell Henley (-8) T7. Matt Fitzpatrick, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy (-7)

It was a strange round for Scheffler. It looked early like he might run away from the rest of the field as he -- at one point -- built a five-stroke lead. But late bogeys and a disastrous triple at the tough par-3 15th bumped him from that top spot.

What's kind of incredible: Even though he lost 1.5 strokes by hitting it in the water on the 15th alone, he was still in the top half of the field from tee to green and last in putting. The next three days are going to be extremely interesting on the putting front.

If -- and this is a big if -- he can not look at the actual leaderboard with starting strokes and simply focus on recovering the shots he lost Thursday over the next 54 holes, it's fair to suspect he will still probably win the tournament come Sunday.

Struggling Rory

Golf Channel's Todd Lewis reported before the round that McIlroy injured his back earlier in the week and had not played a practice round leading into the day. He hit balls for a bit on the range, but the result was not pretty. McIlroy, who has won the FedEx Cup three times in his career -- including in 2022 -- then stepped to the first tee and touched over 180 miles per hour ball speed with driver so it didn't seem like a massive problem.

However, he was clearly bothered by it throughout the day, often stopping to stretch it out, wincing and letting go of the club more often than a dialed-in Hideki Matsuyama. The result was a disappointing (albeit somewhat miraculous) 70. All in all, this was not a terrible result for McIlroy, who at times looked like he could have shot 80. He stays at 7 under, remains three back and is playing a golf course he rules. If he can get his back into a place where it feels normal, he's still very much in the mix.

Rick Gehman and Kyle Porter break down the first round of the Tour Championship at East Lake. It's storylines, scorecards and betting favorites from the finale of the FedEx Cup. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

2023 Tour Championship updated odds, picks

  • Scottie Scheffler: 3-1
  • Viktor Hovland: 7/2
  • Collin Morikawa: 11/2
  • Rory McIlroy: 13/2
  • Jon Rahm: 12-1
  • Keegan Bradley: 14-1

I would sprinkle on both Scheffler and Hovland here. They are your two most likely winners, even if it does not feel great after 18 holes of play. Both have good perspective on the arc of a tournament, and neither will be rattled by being caught (and in Scheffler's case, surpassed) by hot rounds from Morikawa or Bradley. I believe one of Scheffler or Hovland will win the Tour Championship.

Scheffler Rolling

He's already 3 under through six holes, six clear of everyone but Hovland (who he's five clear of) and probably en route to a victory. In other words, a show.

Rory McIlroy Struggling

McIlroy is having some apparent back issues early and did not play a hole this week at East Lake. He's +1 through two holes and now five back of Scheffler at the top. Also, Collin Morikawa is tied with him at -6.

2023 Tour Championship leaderboard: Viktor Hovland dominates to hoist FedEx Cup after second straight victory

Hovland pulled off the rare bmw championship, tour championship double to claim an $18 million grand prize.

The summer heat wave sweeping across the United States has a new name: Viktor Hovland. Running away from the field in record fashion at the 2023 Tour Championship, Hovland finished the week at 27 under and five strokes clear of Xander Schauffele to claim his first FedEx Cup.

Beginning the week at 8 under, Hovland was the top name on both the official leaderboard and the shadow leaderboard (which the Official World Golf Rankings recognizes) as his 72-hole total of 19-under 261 matched that of Schauffele's.

The young Norwegian became just the fifth man to claim the final two legs of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship. In the process, he cashed a pair of checks amounting to $21.6 million, $18 million of which came this week for winning the FedEx Cup.

Hovland did most of the heavy lifting early in the week, but the laidback Sunday stroll most envisioned was anything but stress-free. Starting off the final round with a six-stroke lead, the 25-year-old was faced with immediate stress as a two-hour weather delay arrived just as he was lining up a 15-foot par putt on No. 2.

While all 29 of Hovland's counterparts were busy on the driving range in the lead up to the restart, he was hanging out on the putting green. Practicing a left-to-right tickler, Hovland's added reps paid dividends as his successful conversion for par was met with an unsuccessful birdie bid from Schauffele.

Schauffele, the unofficial king of East Lake Golf Club, mustered together a mighty charge. Five birdies on his front nine saw the 2017 Tour Championship winner turn in 30, the lowest front-nine score of the week. Hovland's lead foot was heavy on the gas pedal in lockstep with his playing competitor as Schauffele's front-nine heater was only able to trim the edge to five.

Avid golf fans know a tournament doesn't start until the back nine on Sunday. Take a look at Hovland seven days ago, and birdies from the blade of Schauffele on the 11th and 12th cut the front runner's lead to three and pumped blood back into the heart of the postseason finale.

Heartbeats of spectators and players began to pulse even faster as pressure ramped up and shots were magnified. Right when it looked like Hovland's margin would get cut once again, the man who has done no wrong the last week found an extra gear and let out a hearty fist pump when his par putt from 23 feet -- his longest made putt of the week -- found the bottom of the cup on the 14th.

The championship was put on ice with that conversion, and Hovland's ascension to the top of the sport was official roughly an hour later. Complete throughout his game and throughout his mind, Hovland proved yet again to be a quick study and aced this year's final with flying colors. Grade: A+

Here are the grades for the rest of the leaderboard at the 2023 Tour Championship.

2. Xander Schauffele (-22): Take away Hovland, and Schauffele wins the FedEx Cup running away. That pretty much sums up his season as he enjoyed the best statistical year of his career but walks away without a win. He ran into a bulldozer at the Wells Fargo Championship, and the same was true this week. Schauffele continued to be one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour in 2023 as he racked up 17 top 20s in 23 starts and did not miss a single cut. Grade: A+

3. Wyndham Clark (-16): What a year for Clark. A first-time PGA Tour winner turned major champion turned top-three finisher in the FedEx Cup. His rise to the upper echelon of the game has been a joy to watch, and it begs the question: What will next year have in store? Enjoying one of the five best seasons on the PGA Tour this year, Clark proved to have the game and mettle in the big moment. He will head to Rome as one of the many rookies on the U.S. Ryder Cup team where this new affinity for the bright lights will be needed for the American side. Grade: A

4. Rory McIlroy (-14): The back injury took center stage at East Lake for the three-time FedEx Cup champion. Unable to hit any shots leading up to the tournament, McIlroy did well to get around East Lake in even par Thursday and remain within three strokes of the lead after beginning at 7 under. However, without the vintage McIlroy firepower, that was the closest he would get to the top as he ultimately became a non-factor in the championship. It would have been a nice bow on a stellar summer that featured 10 straight top-10 finishes dating back to the PGA Championship. Grade: A-

T6. Collin Morikawa (-11): He clipped Tiger Woods' 36-hole scoring record by two at East Lake, but that was as good as it got for the two-time major champion. He would have become the first player to start from 1 under to win the FedEx Cup and would have done so in a season where he once again was winless. It has now been more than two years since Morikawa has won on the PGA Tour, but there should not be any cause for concern. This season marked the best of his career in terms of total strokes gained and strokes gained around the green. Grade: B+

T6. Scottie Scheffler (-11): The world No. 1 entered the week atop the FedEx Cup standings only to relinquish his edge with a poor opening round. Scheffler did well to bounce back Friday -- when he gained nearly two strokes on the greens -- but the putting woes lurked and spelled his demise ending the week dead last with the putter. This year had all the makings of one of the all-time seasons on the PGA Tour as Scheffler led in strokes gained tee to green, strokes gained off the tee and strokes gained approach. He was only able to notch a pair of victories when a minimum of five felt certain as his 145th-ranked flat stick proved to be a constant hindrance. He became the first player in the staggered start era to begin the week with the lead and finish outside the top five. Grade: C

T18. Jon Rahm (-7): The Spaniard led the FedEx Cup for 30 consecutive weeks, entered the postseason in pole position but stumbled when it mattered most. Forgettable outings at the St. Jude Championship and BMW Championship put Rahm at 6 under to start the Tour Championship. He got within four at the halfway point before heading in the wrong direction on Moving Day. The big left miss was heavy on the mind of Rahm with the driver in hand and mirrored early spring troubles he endured. Despite a relatively quiet summer, Rahm should be the PGA Tour Player of the Year with a Masters title, three other victories and his runner up at The Open. Grade: C-

27. Jordan Spieth (+1): While he was lucky to qualify for the Tour Championship, the 2015 FedEx Cup champ did nothing with his good fortune. Spieth ranked outside the top half in each strokes gained category and put the finishing touches on a year that did not include a single trophy. The injuries the week of the Wells Fargo Championship sent his season into a frenzy, and not even the rollercoaster that is Spieth could get his game back on track. Grade: D

Rick Gehman is joined by Kyle Porter, Patrick McDonald and Greg DuCharme to break down Viktor Hovland's clinical performance at the Tour Championship. He is the 2023 FedEx Cup Champion. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Hovland up four with two to go

That will do it. Viktor Hovland birdies the 16th to get to 25 under and four clear of Schauffele. Xander did his best to make this thing interesting, but the par save from Hovland on the 14th really put it on ice.

Huge save for Hovland

That was the longest putt Hovland has converted all week, and it came at a momentous time. Jarring a 23-foot par save on the 14th after a poor chip, Hovland maintained his three-stroke lead with four holes to play. The Norwegian flashes a fist pump just as it seems like things were going the other way.
