Jack Reacher 2 Director Explains Why Tom Cruise’s Sequel Flopped

He's right... but also a little harsh.

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher

It’s kind of funny seeing how Lee Child’s Jack Reacher stories are  succeeding on Amazon Prime Video , because when Hollywood took a shot at adapting the stories, they crashed and burned after only one winning feature. The streaming series Reacher is currently in production on Reacher Season 3 , with viewers praising the approach to the material, and the casting of Alan Ritchson in the lead role. So, what went wrong with the movies, which had Tom Cruise in the lead (and should have worked better than they did)? If you ask Ed Zwick, the director of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , he’ll tell you that he was the problem .

Ed Zwick has written a terrific book about his film career called Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions . It’s a terrific tell-all about some major movies we grew up on, and eventually, Zwick gets to his contribution to the Jack Reacher film series. Zwick took over for Christopher McQuarrie , who actually turned Jack Reacher into a formidable adaptation of the Lee Child book One Shot . And when opening up about the experience in the book , Zwick revealed:

‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,’ which Tom Cruise and I made in 2016, fizzled at the box office. I blame myself (and my willing accomplice, Don Granger) for thinking the audience might enjoy a mash-up of ‘Jack Reacher’ and ‘Paper Moon,’ when in fact they just wanted more red meat. I had a wonderful time working with Cobie Smulders, and I certainly don’t blame Tom for not being six two — as the novelist Lee Child described his protagonist — and should Tom happen to call about making a third movie together, I’ll definitely pick up.

The Jack Reacher series started behind the eight ball because die-hard fans of the novels instantly thought Tom Cruise was wrong to play the part. Reacher, as we can now see in Alan Ritchson , is meant to be a 6-foot-5 giant – a mountain of a man who deals with problems as bluntly, intensely, and physically as possible. Cruise is ideal for Ethan Hunt. He;s not Jack Reacher.

Also, as Ed Zwick notes, there’s no real room for nuance in the Reacher stories. He calls it “red meat,” but really, fans of the stories just want hard-hitting action. This is why Alan Ritchson always looks like he has been through the wringer when he shares set visit photos , or talks about the demanding physical nature of the part.

Not that he’s complaining much… unless you talk to him about filming in Canada . Then he might have some choice words. If you forget what Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back looked like, revisit this trailer.

And then go rewatch the first two seasons of Reacher , on Amazon Prime Video, while we wait for news on the eventual Reacher Season 3. We know that it’s going to adapt the Lee Child book Persuader , and recently added Anthony Michael Hall in a key role. Grab a copy of the book, if you are a fan. It’s a banger.

In the film, A seemingly purposeless shooting rampage claimed the lives of five people in a typical town one morning. The investigation quickly zeroes in on a single possible suspect, a former military sniper, who is taken into custody without delay. The questioning of the individual results in one statement: Get Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise).

2. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)

Jack Reacher returns to enforce his bold brand of justice in the action-packed sequel based on the 2013 novel Never Go Back by Lee Child.

In the films, Jack Reacher, a former soldier and drifter, completes his mission to dismantle a human trafficking organization, he travels to Washington, DC, to meet with his liaison, Major Susan Turner, for dinner. But instead, he runs into her replacement, Colonel Sam Morgan, who tells him that Major Turner has been arrested on espionage charges.

In addition, he informs Jack that a woman has filed a lawsuit against him, claiming that he is the father of her fifteen-year-old daughter, Samantha.

Jack is thrown in jail after being falsely accused of murdering Moorcroft. He realizes that he and Turner are both in the crosshairs of two assassins and that they have been set up. But he comes to her aid, and they make their escape. It doesn’t take long before they figure out that army personnel and a powerful government contractor/arms dealer are involved in a plot.

10 Shows Like Reacher to Watch if You Want More Reacher

When you need more gritty dramas with big dudes

liam-mathews

Reacher  was an instant hit for Amazon Prime Video when Season 1 was released in 2022, and it's not difficult to figure out why. The series is based on Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels, following the titular Jack Reacher (played by  Alan Ritchson ), a former military policeman who puts his unique mix of brawn and brains to good use as he travels around the U.S. solving mysteries and cracking skulls.

Now that  Season 2  is out and the episodes are being released weekly instead of all at once, we've got a hankering for some more shows like Reacher  while we wait for the next episode, so we put together some recommendations for shows like Reacher . From action shows to detective shows to other paperback adaptations, there's plenty here. Grab a cup of black coffee and a slice of peach pie and settle in to watch some wisecracking antiheroes beat up some bad guys.

The Old Man

Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow, The Old Man

Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow, The Old Man

2022 was a pretty good year for shows featuring men chasing conspiracies with more than just muscle, and while Reacher was one of the best, my vote for THE best of the year would be FX's The Old Man . Based on the 2017 novel by Thomas Perry, The Old Man stars Jeff Bridges as Dan Chase, a former CIA operative whose life in hermitic retirement is disrupted when someone tries to kill him, sending him down a path of revenge and redemption involving his past. Like Reacher, Chase is direct, sharp, and can put a man down in ways you'd never expect. But Chase is sitting on a bed of secrets, which are doled out in excellent fashion throughout the seven white knuckle episodes. John Lithgow , Amy Brennman , and Alia Shawkat also star. If you like Reacher , you'll love The Old Man .  -Tim Surette

The streamer started with Bosch , perfected the model with Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan (both shows are on this list), and scaled it this year with Reacher and  The Terminal List . The Terminal List , which is based on a novel by former Navy SEAL Jack Carr, follows a rogue SEAL played by Chris Pratt on a mission to get revenge on the people that orchestrated a conspiracy that caused great suffering for him and his loved ones. The testosterone-fueled thriller is a Reacher-sized hit. The biggest difference between the shows is that Reacher has a sense of humor and The Terminal List does not. -Liam Mathews

Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock

Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock

Jack Reacher is a brilliant detective with superior powers of deduction and no fear of saying exactly what he thinks. He's basically an extremely muscular, American version of Sherlock Holmes; specifically, Benedict Cumberbatch 's modern-day version of the iconic inspector from the 2010-2017 BBC show Sherlock . Holmes is a brilliant, acerbic London detective who's always the smartest person in the room, much to the chagrin of his more ordinary but still pretty brilliant sidekick, John Watson ( Martin Freeman ). Sherlock doesn't have the action-packed beatdowns of Reacher , but it does have the clever detective work that's the other half of the Prime Video show. If it's wall-to-wall action you're looking for, scroll down. -Liam Mathews

Antony Starr, Banshee

Antony Starr,  Banshee

If you love Reacher 's action and small-town crime, you have to check out Banshee . This Cinemax series ran for four seasons from 2013 to 2016 and tells the story a high-level diamond thief ( Antony Starr , now best known for playing Homelander on The Boys ) who gets out of prison and assumes the identity of Lucas Hood, the new sheriff of Banshee, a town in Pennsylvania Amish country, after Hood is randomly killed in a bar fight. Since the new sheriff in town is no sheriff at all but a career criminal with his own ideas about justice, the town gets lawless as hell. That lawlessness leads to some of the best action and fight sequences TV has ever seen. Antony Starr is not as large as Alan Ritchson (who is?), but he can scrap with the best of them. - Liam Mathews

Hap and Leonard

Michael K. Williams and James Purefoy, Hap & Leonard

Michael K. Williams and James Purefoy, Hap & Leonard

This is another Southern-fried crime drama with an arch sense of humor that's based on a book series. Hap & Leonard , which ran for three seasons on Sundance between 2016 and 2018, is based on a series of novels by cult favorite author Joe R. Lansdale about Hap Collins ( James Purefoy ), a white conscientious objector, and Leonard Pine (the late, great Michael K. Williams ), a gay, Black Vietnam vet. They're blue-collar best friends who have a way of getting caught up in criminal entanglements with violent people in '80s East Texas. Each season adapts a different one of Lansdale's novels, which is the same format Reacher will follow. Season 1, for example, finds Hap getting recruited by his left-wing radical ex-lover Trudy Fawst ( Christina Hendricks ) to help find some stolen cash that was lost in the area decades prior, a plan that's supposed to be simple but ends up getting very complicated. It's a clever, underrated show that always brought in a great supporting cast every season. - Liam Mathews

Timothy Olyphant, Justified

Timothy Olyphant, Justified

If it's a stone-cold guy embarrassing crooks and criminals and talking sh-- in the South that you're in the mood for, look no further than the modern masterpiece Justified , which is based on a character created by crime novel master Elmore Leonard. Timothy Olyphant plays U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, a shoot-from-the-hip lawman whose tongue is as sharp as his aim. While more gregarious and poetic than and not quite as yoked as Reacher, Givens shares Reacher's sense of the ideal male fantasy; you'd swap places with either of these guys in a heartbeat. As for the show itself, each of the six seasons follows a season-long mystery involving plenty of investigation that bends the rules just a bit. - Tim Surette

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan

John Krasinski, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan

John Krasinski, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan

If you can't get enough of ass-kicking Jacks on Amazon Prime Video after watching Reacher , then your next binge should be the action thriller Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan , another book-to-screen adaptation about a guy who knows more than anyone else in the room. John Krasinski plays the popular CIA analyst in this story about the early days of his career and transition from a desk jockey to a stud in the field, as he takes down threats to America around the world. This Jack isn't as jacked as Reacher 's Jack, but Jack Ryan has the same procedural investigation you loved in Reacher , just in a bigger, global scope. The show debuted in 2018 and was an immediate hit, and Amazon will keep making seasons as long as there are more bad guys to catch. - Tim Surette

Titus Welliver, Bosch

Titus Welliver, Bosch

Amazon's becoming a real home to watch dad books, and the series that started it all was Bosch , a gritty cop show based on the works of author Michael Connelly. Titus Welliver stars as Harry Bosch, the titular troubled cop who, at the start of the series, is not only out to throw murderers in jail, but is also the subject of a murder investigation (a wrongful death suit) himself. (Hey, just like Reacher!) It's more of a straightforward cop show than a lone wolf doing good show like Reacher  is, but it's firmly centered on a main character who solves crimes his own way. It's also got a real sense of place, with Los Angeles serving as the backdrop for corruption and crime. - Tim Surette

Taveeta Szymanowicz and Marlo Kelly, Dare Me

Taveeta Szymanowicz and Marlo Kelly, Dare Me

What's a one-season drama about cheerleaders doing on a list of shows to watch if you like Reacher ? Well, before Jack Reacher joined the military, he was a cheerleader. Just kidding! But I would watch that. Dare Me makes the list because it shows off the talents of Willa Fitzgerald , whom you may have been introduced to in Reacher ; she plays Roscoe Conklin, Reacher's more-than-a-friend on the force. In Dare Me , Fitzgerald plays the new cheerleading coach — a mysterious character who is almost nothing like the sweet Roscoe — at a high school where the cheerleaders run things, but the show adds the extra drama of a murder mystery and a thriller as the cheerleaders investigate the sketchy past of Fitzgerald's character. It was canceled after one season, but it's one of those gems that never got its due. - Tim Surette

Blood Drive

Alan Ritchson, Blood Drive

Alan Ritchson, Blood Drive

Alan Ritchson's performance as Reacher carries most of Reacher , and if you're just meeting him for the first time, you're probably wondering where you can see more of him. The obvious answer is to watch the crude football comedy Blue Mountain State , which aired three seasons on Spike TV from 2010 to 2011 (it's streaming on Freevee ) and features Ritchson as a linebacker for a college football team, but we're going with something of a deeper cut. A leaner Ritchson was the star of Syfy's underrated 2017 series Blood Drive , a drive-in action show about a car race in an apocalyptic future where the cars run on... human blood. Each episode features a new grindhouse-style obstacle, like vampires, cannibals, or "sex plagues," and Blood Drive gleefully played up the campiness. It sounds silly, but it got great reviews and is a perfect escape. Ritchson plays a former cop forced into the race who teams up with a femme fatale ( Christina Ochoa ) to take down the evil master of ceremonies (a balls-to-the-wall Colin Cunningham ) and the corporation behind the games. - Tim Surette

Jack Reacher

Rosamund Pike and Tom Cruise, Jack Reacher

Rosamund Pike and Tom Cruise, Jack Reacher

If you're new to the Reacherverse but loved Amazon's take on Jack Reacher, you may as well see what all the fuss was about when Alan Ritchson was cast in the lead role. It's because the Jack Reacher in the 2012 film was played by 5'7"  Tom Cruise , who does not exactly fit the physical profile of the Reacher dreamed up by Lee Child. Still, the movie is a solid action film, and as usual, Cruise is good and does his own stunts. But it's also a good reminder of how great Ritchson is as Reacher and why we were all happy to see him fill up the TV screen and vacuum up plates of BBQ. -Tim Surette

Much of Will Ferrell’s 'Elf' Was Filmed in a Surprisingly Haunting Location

Jamie foxx is unstoppable in this ruthless cop thriller, did 'godzilla minus one' just school hollywood on movie making.

In an era where any film with a sizable budget requires a connection to some form of previously existing intellectual property, the number of genuine movie stars that can sell a film based on their name alone is dwindling. Tom Cruise is one of the exceptions, and he’s been one of the exceptions for almost four decades now. Since 1983’s Risky Business , Cruise has been a bankable star who has seamlessly drifted between popcorn fare, auteur awards contenders, and elevated genre films. But of all Cruise's many career swerves and readjustments, there's one glaring example of a road unfortunately not taken, and that's all down to 2016's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back .

First, some context. Cruise has always been his own brand, and next year marks an interesting turning point in his career. Not only will Cruise turn sixty years old (although that will hardly stop him from hanging off planes ), but his two films slated for release see him returning to iconic roles. The currently untitled Mission: Impossible 7 is the first of a two-part follow-up (and perhaps finale?) to Ethan Hunt’s story, and Top Gun: Maverick will see Cruise finally return to the world of aviation and beach volleyball.

RELATED: 10 Bad Sequels to Great Movies

Cruise doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon, but he may need to adjust. An actor so committed to the theatrical experience (you’ll probably never see him in a Netflix film) who's rarely interested in awards contenders anymore (remember American Made ?) may need to commit himself to a franchise at some point. It’s not as if Cruise hasn’t been trying, but between the slow process on an Edge of Tomorrow sequel , continued delays on Top Gun: Maverick , and the absolute disaster of the “ Dark Universe ,” Ethan Hunt has been his only consistently recurring character.

However, Cruise did flirt with one potential exterior franchise with the Jack Reacher series. In Christopher McQuarrie’ s second feature directorial effort, Cruise embodied the U.S. Army police detective from Lee Child ’s novels. Although it was certainly another excuse for Cruise to beat the ever-living crap out of people ( including five guys at once ), Reacher was a distinct character from Hunt that could feasibly be developed in subsequent films adapting other books within Child’s series. Unfortunately, the 2016 sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back made all the classic sequel mistakes, killing what could have been an interesting move in Cruise’s career.

Never Go Back turned Reacher into just another action hero. The pulpy opening sequence would have been a fun intro if it previewed actual substance later on, but the film traps Cruise within a convoluted military conspiracy with little emphasis on any actual problem-solving. The first Jack Reacher was interesting because it wasn’t a Mission: Impossible movie. Cruise didn’t need just another action franchise; seeing him in a pulpy urban noir was a refreshing change of pace.

Jack Reacher also helped fill a void in mid-budget crime action films that have been sorely missing in Hollywood. While McQuarrie is now Cruise’s favorite director and script doctor, he started out in the world of neo-noir with his Oscar-winning screenplay for The Usual Suspects and directorial debut The Way of the Gun . Compared to the rather disturbing opening sequence of the first film , Never Go Back gives him sub- Mission: Impossible action.

It was particularly disappointing considering McQuarrie’s intentions for the series to go in a darker, R-Rated direction, as the first film already pushed the boundaries of PG-13. Cruise has only appeared in a few R-Rated films across the last decade, but he has the unique ability to draw an audience to a dying genre ( Rock of Ages notwithstanding). Could Cruise have kickstarted a trend of modern neo-noir with Jack Reacher in the same way Edge of Tomorrow inspired interest in original sci-fi? We’ll never know.

Never Go Back also fell into the uncomfortable territory of lionizing Reacher’s tactics, but again the first film was interesting because Cruise was actually holding himself accountable. He was playing a military operative who crosses ethical and moral boundaries, and there was a genuine moral grayness that isn’t present in the Mission: Impossible series. Never Go Back wasn’t interested in exploring the darkness that Cruise was clearly capable of, instead shackling him with a kid ( Danika Yarosh ) and an uninteresting love interest ( Cobie Smulders , who clearly deserved much better).

Never Go Back made over $50 million less worldwide than its predecessor, and unkind reviews indicated that audiences would rather just wait for the next Mission: Impossible adventure than see Cruise embarrass himself with another bloated sequel. As is the case with literary heroes like Jack Ryan, Alex Cross, Lisbeth Salandar, and Mickey Haller, Amazon swooped in to move the cinematic character to the small screen for a direct-to-streaming series.

Perhaps Child’s work is better suited for a serialized adventure, and hopes are high for the upcoming Reacher that debuts in February. However, it remains a shame that Cruise wasn’t given the chance to mature into a darker character as Ethan Hunt’s adventures (eventually) reached their conclusion. Never Go Back ’s title was ironically predictive.

The 32 greatest Tom Cruise movies

The Mission: Impossible and Top Gun star has had us all at "Hello"

Jerry Maguire

For decades, the name Tom Cruise has been synonymous with Hollywood movies. With so many classic movies under his belt, it's not hard to understand why.

Though his career has had its share of controversies, Cruise has maintained high altitude as one of Hollywood's most bankable movie stars in its history. Raised in near poverty under an abusive father, Cruise took up acting in high school after he was cut from the varsity football team when he was caught drinking beers before a game.

After starring in his school's production of Guys and Dolls, Cruise caught the acting bug and moved away - first to New York, then to Los Angeles - to pursue a career in TV and movies. He made his movie debut in the 1981 movie Endless Love, and then had a supporting role in the film Taps. After several more small parts, he starred in Paul Brickman's Risky Business, where Cruise won over audiences everywhere with a killer lip-sync routine.

With numerous accolades and just as many controversies to his name, Tom Cruise is the definition of a Hollywood superstar whose presence alone can move mountains. With a career still going strong, we rank the 32 greatest Tom Cruise movies of all time.

32. Oblivion (2013)

Oblivion

Well into his career as a top-tier Hollywood star, Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski aimed to prove that the old ways of original, star-driven spectacles could still draw audiences without attaching a known superhero IP. Enter: Oblivion. Based on Kosinski's own unpublished graphic novel (which Kosinski said was always just a pitch for a movie anyway), Tom Cruise stars as a maintenance technician in the far future who, on the brink of retirement, is drawn into the mystery of both himself and the true nature of the war that destroyed Earth. Oblivion was a modest success at the box office and drew mixed reviews from critics. But it has aged very well, being an expansive original sci-fi epic with breathtaking imagination.

31. Knight and Day (2010)

Knight and Day

From director James Mangold comes Knight and Day, a satirical action romp that set fire to romantic comedy conventions. Tom Cruise leads the movie as a spy on the run from the CIA who bumps into, and then whisks away, a beautiful vintage car dealer played by Cameron Diaz. (The two previously starred together in Cameron Crowe's Vanilla Sky.) Although Knight and Day was just the first of many Hollywood rom-coms that felt obligated to double as action movies to attract a wide demographic, the movie succeeds with legitimately impressive set-pieces that violently whip Tom Cruise across the screen.

30. Tropic Thunder (2008)

Tropic Thunder

Tom Cruise being unrecognizable in heavy makeup and prosthetics, all while playing a sleazy Scott Rudin-type caricature, is like only the fourth or fifth funniest thing about the R-rated comic blockbuster Tropic Thunder. In Ben Stiller's napalm-coated parody of Vietnam War films and the pampered lives of Hollywood stars, Cruise features in a minor supporting role as Les Grossman, a truly gross man and ruthless studio executive. Cruise's role was meant to be a secret, though leaked paparazzi photos and internet blogs ruined that fun by spoiling it ahead of time. Nevertheless, Cruise's sharp and venomous performance was and still is hailed by critics and audiences as one of Cruise's all-time best movie roles.

29. The Firm (1993)

The Firm

In 1993, two movies were based on John Grisham novels. The first was The Pelican Brief, a legal thriller starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington. The other was Sydney Pollack's The Firm, with Tom Cruise leading in an adaptation of Grisham's 1991 novel. Cruises plays a young, talented Harvard Law grad who is recruited by a prestigious Tennessee firm who specialize in mob clients. Soon enough, Cruise finds himself in the crossfire between the FBI, the mob, and his own colleagues ready to sell him out. Although The Firm is one of Cruise's more overlooked movies in his career, it makes a solid case for being one of his greatest.

28. Valkyrie (2008)

Valkyrie

In this solid World War II thriller from Bryan Singer, Tom Cruise leads as one of several German Nazi Army officers, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who seek to enact Operation Valkyrie – a national emergency plan to take control away from Adolf Hitler. In preparation for the role, Cruise spent months devouring history books and even interviewing members of the real von Stauffenberg's family. Because von Stauffenberg had several physical disabilities including a lost left eye and a missing right hand, Cruise spent a lot of time affecting those ailments while doing things like dressing himself and writing letters. The results speak for itself, with Cruise dependably engaging as a soldier loyal to his country and not a political ideal.

27. Days of Thunder (1990)

Days of Thunder

While Tony Scott's Days of Thunder was criticized during its 1990 release as a derivative copycat of his own box office smash Top Gun, Days of Thunder still burns rubber like few movies can. Set in the world of professional NASCAR, Tom Cruise plays hotshot rookie driver Cole who clashes with veteran driver Rowdy (Michael Rooker). Eventually these rivals become brothers on the track, with Cole driving Rowdy's car against their common enemy, a cheat named Russ Wheeler (Cary Elwes). Even if Cruise is basically playing Maverick again, Days of Thunder easily satisfies anyone with a need for speed.

26. Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)

Mission: Impossible 2

After Hong Kong director John Woo made his way to Hollywood in the '90s, the legendary action filmmaker collaborated with Tom Cruise on the first sequel to Cruise's 1995 mega-hit Mission: Impossible. The follow-up sees Cruise return as daredevil agent Ethan Hunt, who teams up with a beautiful thief (Thandiwe Newton) to secure a modified disease held by her ex-lover and rogue IMF agent (Dougray Scott). While a box office hit, Mission: Impossible 2 remains divisive among M:I aficionados, being one of the more elaborately designed and even melodramatic entries in the otherwise stone cold sober series.

25. Legend (1985)

Legend

Mystifying but magnetic in equal measure, Legend is basically a dark Disney fairy tale through the eyes of master filmmaker Ridley Scott. Tom Cruise stars as Jack, a free-spirited forest dweller who must stop the demonic Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry in the illest devil makeup you've ever seen) from plunging a fantastical world into eternal night. Although Legend was praised for its gorgeous production design, critics complained the movie was nothing more than a pretty storybook in motion. Honestly they are kind of right, as Legend severely lacks forward movement and meaty action. Still, the movie is drop-dead gorgeous to look at, with a score by Tangerine Dream that feels otherworldly.

24. Jack Reacher (2012)

Jack Reacher

While it's true that Lee Child's literary antihero Jack Reacher is a walking, talking slab of meat and that Tom Cruise is decidedly not that, Cruise still kills it in the role. In the first Jack Reacher movie from director Christopher McQuarrie, which adapts the ninth Reacher novel One Shot from 2005, Cruise plays the title hero, an ex-U.S. Army Major and military police investigator who is mysteriously named by a mass shooting suspect in custody. Never mind that Cruise is several shirt sizes smaller than what Reacher is supposed to be. His movie has all the muscle and swagger to make up for it.

23. Magnolia (1999)

Magnolia

In Paul Thomas Anderson's celebrated (and quite long) ensemble drama inspired by the music of Aimee Mann, a number of interrelated characters look for happiness in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. While the movie features a number of actors like Jeremy Blackman, Philip Seymour Hoffmann, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore, and John C. Reilly, a standout among them all is Tom Cruise, a misogynist motivational speaker who lectures rooms full of men how to pick up women. While Cruise's character Frank lacks humanity on paper, Cruise's performance imbues rare pathos into the role that you might find yourself pitying him instead of spitting at him. The Oscars seemingly agreed and nominated Cruise for Best Supporting Actor at the 72nd Academy Awards. In a 2015 interview on Marc Maron's WTF Podcast, Anderson revealed that the inspiration for Cruise's role was pickup artist Ross Jeffries.

22. Risky Business (1983)

Risky Business

You only need a pair of white socks, a white button-up shirt, and Ray-Bans to dress as one of Tom Cruise's most memorable movie characters for Halloween. In 1983, a young Tom Cruise became a movie star overnight with the release of Paul Brickman's Risky Business, which is about an overachieving high school senior who parties up with a sex worker while his parents are on vacation. Often compared to The Graduate in its timeless portrayal of promising youth indulging in self-destructive vices, Risky Business launched Tom Cruise to Hollywood stardom, and for good reason. He's simply sensational, an instant star in the making who makes it impossible to hate him while he's kicking his feet up to some old time rock 'n roll.

21. Minority Report (2002)

Minority Report

In Steven Spielberg's blockbuster adaptation of Philip K. Dick's sci-fi novella from 1956, Tom Cruise plays a psychic cop in the future year of 2054. While his department of "Precrime" use the power of foreknowledge to apprehend criminals before they actually commit a crime, Cruise's John Anderton winds up being accused of a crime yet to happen and races to prove his innocence. A dizzying mix of crime noir, speculative science fiction, and whodunit mysteries, Minority Report entertains as a strange hybrid of Total Recall and The Fugitive, made sublime simply because of a master like Spielberg present on directing duties. Eerily and quite fittingly, a lot of the movie's speculative future technology like multi-touch interfaces, eye scanners, and autonomous cars have come to fruition in our real world.

20. Mission: Impossible 3 (2006)

Mission: Impossible 3

Before J.J. Abrams took on both Star Trek and Star Wars, he made his directing debut with the third Mission: Impossible installment. Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, now retired from the IMF, who is forced back into action to hunt down a sinister arms dealer played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. While Mission: Impossible 3 was a hit when it opened in 2006 and considered by many much better than John Woo's previous film, Mission: Impossible 3 struggles to stand out in the shadow of other sequels like Ghost Protocol and Fallout. Still, M:I 3 is solid popcorn fare with Cruise doing what he does best.

19. The Last Samurai (2003)

The Last Samurai

Despite its awkward optics of Tom Cruise in samurai armor, The Last Samurai is a majestic period drama that teeters between prestige war epic and pulpy action movie. (When a film stages Tom Cruise in a fist fight with ninjas, you know you're dealing with something that's hard to pin down.) Directed by Edward Zwick and following in the tradition of stories like Dances With Wolves, The Last Samurai sees Cruise play an American captain who bears witness to the last generation of samurai amid the Meiji Restoration of 19th century Japan. An elaborate metaphor about modernization and adaptation, The Last Samurai is one of Cruise's most dad-core movies of his career, a high-grossing blockbuster that also earned several Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, including a Golden Globe Best Actor nomination for Cruise.

18. Vanilla Sky (2001)

Vanilla Sky

In Cameron Crowe's sci-fi psychological drama Vanilla Sky, itself a remake of Alejandro Amenábar's 1997 movie Open Your Eyes, Tom Cruise stars as the playboy owner of a major publishing company in New York City who becomes disfigured in a vehicular crash caused by an obsessive lover (Cameron Diaz). In the aftermath, Cruise becomes smitten by a beautiful woman (played by Penélope Cruz) as his sense of reality starts to fracture. With a memorable plot twist and ambiguous ending, Vanilla Sky blew moviegoers away to become a massive box office hit despite being unpopular with most critics. In the years since its 2001 release, Vanilla Sky has become a must-see cult movie.

17. A Few Good Men (1992)

A Few Good Men

You can't handle the truth, but Tom Cruise can. In Rob Reiner's acclaimed film version of Aaron Sorkin's 1989 play, Cruise stars alongside other acting heavyweights like Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Kiefer Sutherland. Cruise plays a Navy lawyer who must defend two Marines accused of killing another soldier. Memorably explosive and gripping with nary a single bullet fired, A Few Good Men culminates in an iconic courtroom confrontation that reveals the difference between following orders and fighting for justice.

16. The Color of Money (1986)

The Color of Money

You can almost feel Paul Newman hand the torch of Hollywood heartthrob to Tom Cruise in Martin Scorsese's smoky and cool 1986 picture The Color of Money. A sequel to The Hustler, Newman returns as Fast Eddie Felson, who partners with an up-and-coming pool shark (Cruise), and his tough girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) as they play their way to an Atlantic City tournament. While The Color of Money was compared unfavorably to The Hustler at the time of its release, it has earned greater appreciation as yet another showcase of Scorsese's talent - not to mention longtime editor Thelma Schoonmaker's - and the pairing of Newman and Cruise representing the changing of the guard between two generations of Hollywood.

15. Rain Man (1988)

Rain Man

In this acclaimed drama directed by Barry Levinson, Tom Cruise plays a selfish and arrogant Lamborghini dealer who learns, after his estranged father's death, that he has a grown autistic savant brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman, in an Oscar-winning performance). As the two embark on a cross-country roadtrip in their late father's 1949 Buick convertible, they develop a bond long past due. Rain Man was a massive critical and commercial success in 1988, and it's a movie that still holds power to thaw even the most cynical hearts.

14. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Edge of Tomorrow

In 2014, Doug Liman helmed a cult classic sci-fi that paired Tom Cruise with Emily Blunt, making a real movie star out of her in the process. Essentially Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers, Tom Cruise plays a public affairs military officer, Major William Cage, who is forced to the frontlines of humanity's war against a violent alien race. Somehow, Cage ends up in a time loop, forced to repeat his first day on the battlefield until he teams up with a war hero (Blunt) to break the cycle. Despite mismanaged marketing including a clunky title, Edge of Tomorrow impressed a lot of critics and performed well enough at the box office. But its high production budget meant it wasn't the heroic success it could have been. In the end, Edge of Tomorrow maintains appealing status as a muscular, one-and-done sci-fi.

13. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

With J.J. Abrams lost in the final frontier with 2009's Star Trek, the job of directing the next Mission: Impossible was accepted by Brad Bird. Previously a director of animated family movies like The Iron Giant and The Incredibles, Bird revived the Mission: Impossible series with a clear eye and sharp sense of spectacle, helming an installment that saw Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt climb the Burj Khalifa and ingeniously sneak past guards at the Kremlin. The fourth Mission: Impossible was no reboot, but it was without question a rebirth that kicked off a new era for the aging franchise.

12. War of the Worlds (2005)

War of the Worlds

In a 2005 interview with Empire magazine, Steven Spielberg said that for the first time in his movie career, he was making "an alien picture where there is no love and no attempt at communication." We don't dare correct Spielberg, but he's wrong about one thing. In his magnificent and harrowing remake of War of the Worlds, Tom Cruise plays an estranged father who tries to get his children to safely reunite with their mom (and his ex-wife) in Boston. Only love can make a father go to the extreme lengths that Cruise does in War of the Worlds, which is still one of the darkest and finely crafted movies ever by Spielberg.

11. Mission: Impossible (1995)

Mission: Impossible

The original movie that lit the fuse to one of the most dominant movie franchises in Hollywood history is still a mighty sight to behold. In the first Mission: Impossible, directed by Brian De Palma, Tom Cruise makes his first appearance as Ethan Hunt, an agent for the Impossible Missions Force who tries to figure out who framed him for the murder of his team. Being an adaptation of the popular 1960s television show (which is where the franchise's iconic theme song came from), the '95 Mission: Impossible established the formula and standards for all of its subsequent sequels. Throughout the 1990s, you couldn't throw a rock without seeing a parody of the memorable "wire scene." It can still make audiences sweat even now.

10. Interview with the Vampire (1994)

Interview with the Vampire

In one of a handful of movies where Tom Cruise plays the antagonist, Neil Jordan's 1994 film version of Anne Rice's 1976 novel features Cruise as the sinful vampire Lestat, who bites and transforms a Louisiana plantation owner named Louis (Brad Pitt). Together the two spend hundreds of years drinking human blood, eventually adding a little girl named Claudia (Kirsten Dunst) to their circle. Moody and atmospheric, Interview with the Vampire is a mid-'90s gem that feels most effective around autumn time. While the picture mostly belongs to Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise is unavoidably handsome and haunting as a seductive vamp who can really sink his teeth into all who look at him.

9. Collateral (2004)

Collateral

With an off-putting blonde dye job and a steel gray suit that never wrinkles, Tom Cruise inhabits the part of a disturbing and charismatic hitman who hires an unsuspecting L.A. cab driver (Jamie Foxx) to take him up and down the City of Angels for one violent night. Arresting and unstoppable, Collateral is a fine demonstration for both Michael Mann as a filmmaker and Cruise as an actor, the latter keenly locked in as a man so skilled at his deadly job that he seems inhuman. Collateral is simply one of the coolest movies ever made. It makes a complimentary double-bill with Mann's own Miami Vice, both being emotionally-charged neo-noir action thrillers whose digital camera lenses harness an abstract uncertainty of the new millennium.

8. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

It may be the lowest grossing entry in the Mission: Impossible series, but that doesn't mean Dead Reckoning doesn't soar. While being so late into his career, Tom Cruise proves he can still hang - or ride off cliffs - with the best of the industry in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, the first of a two-part installment. With a plot centered around Cruise's Ethan Hunt and the IMF fighting against a rogue artificial intelligence, Mission: Impossible existentially wrestles with the precipice of Hollywood cinema's imminent evolution (or extinction) as an artform. With a diverse cast of exceptionally beautiful people, including Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Pom Klementieff, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One feels like an old school action epic in spirit that executes with cutting-edge style.

7. Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Eyes Wide Shut

In Stanley Kubrick's last movie as a director and released posthumously after his heart attack, Tom Cruise plays an affluent New York doctor who infiltrates a masked orgy hosted by a dark and secret society. And it's all because his wife, played by Cruise's then-real spouse Nicole Kidman, admitted she almost cheated on him. With loads of sexually explicit imagery that really tested the boundaries of the MPAA's R rating, Eyes Wide Shut was initially divisive among critics and audiences before earning retrospective praise as a sterling classic of the 1990s. Its reputation still precedes it, being one of the most provoking and captivating movies Kubrick ever made.

6. Born on the Fourth of July (1989)

Born on the Fourth of July

The second installment of movies that illustrate Oliver Stone's artistic interest in the Vietnam War (of which Stone himself is a veteran), Born on the Fourth of July sees Tom Cruise play an eager volunteer for the U.S. Marine Corps who changes his tune during his deployment and physical paralysis in Vietnam; returning home, he becomes a vocal anti-war activist. Revered by critics and a smash hit at the box office when it opened in December 1989, Born on the Fourth of July earned Cruise's first Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Stone was initially dismissive of Cruise, finding his appearance in Top Gun "fascist." In an L.A. Times interview from 1989, Stone said he changed his mind when he thought Cruise's "golden boy" image would be interesting to see shatter. Said Stone: "I thought it was an interesting proposition: What would happen to Tom Cruise if something goes wrong?"

5. Jerry Maguire (1996)

Jerry Maguire

When Tom Cruise yelled "Show me the money," audiences responded with a massive $273 million box office gross for a modest movie about a sports agent in love. In one of Cruise's all-time greatest movies, the star plays a hotshot sports agent whose crisis of conscience leads him to swing for the fences with just himself, a loyal accountant and single mother (Renée Zellweger), and a middling player for the Arizona Cardinals (Cuba Gooding Jr.). A warm time capsule of mid-'90s era professional sports and Hollywood romances, Jerry Maguire made us all learn how to say: "You complete me." Honestly, it had us at hello.

4. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Top Gun: Maverick

When movie theaters were struggling in the era of COVID-19, Tom Cruise flew to the skies and saved the industry for all. With $1.4 billion gross in ticket sales, Cruise's return to the cockpits made sonic booms to keep theaters open, all while delivering an effective and emotional story about legacy and personal limits. Set over 35 years after the original Top Gun, Cruise's "Maverick" is assigned to oversee Top Gun at NAS North Island, where he must train a new generation of students for a very dangerous mission. As close to dying and seeing heaven as cinema can get, Top Gun: Maverick takes all our breaths away.

3. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

When Tom Cruise hung on to the side of a moving airplane in the first 10 minutes of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, we knew instantly this is a sequel that was built different. In the first of several M:I films helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, the IMF reunite after their disbandment to fight The Syndicate, an international black ops group made up of rogue agents from around the world. Not only is Rogue Nation just a fist-pumping great time, it also introduces franchise favorite Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, a disavowed MI6 agent working undercover. 2015 was a crowded year for tent poles, with blockbusters like Mad Max: Fury Road, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens all vying for attention. Rogue Nation didn't sell the most tickets, but there's no arguing it wasn't one of the year's best.

2. Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Man, even just its trailer can get the adrenaline going. In Christopher McQuarrie's second Mission: Impossible film, Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt and the IMF race against time after a job in Berlin to obtain dangerous plutonium cores away from terrorists goes belly-up. Forced to pay for saving his team over saving the world, Ethan must stop a terrorist mastermind, played by Sean Harris, from blowing everything up. Among the people standing in his way: August Walker (Henry Cavill), a muscular CIA assassin. Featuring some of the most intricately designed set-pieces in the entire franchise, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is the platonic ideal for all M:I sequels by doing one thing and one thing well: Letting Tom Cruise run wild.

1. Top Gun (1986)

Top Gun

Sometimes, a movie comes along and changes everything. Top Gun, directed by Tony Scott and starring Tom Cruise, isn't just a perfect summer movie only Hollywood could deliver; it's a movie that understands what moves people, what draws them into dark rooms and casts spells to make them feel like they can fly. Set at the U.S. Navy's Fighter Weapons School - aka, Top Gun - in San Diego, the movie stars Cruise as a young pilot who sets out to prove himself among the best of the best. While critics in 1986 didn't heap universal and unanimous praise on Top Gun, the movie soared to become one of the biggest commercial hits of all time. Mirroring its own story, Top Gun permanently cemented Tom Cruise's status as a Hollywood titan. At the time Cruise was a rising talent, but through Top Gun, he brandished a killer smile and scorching charisma that made him find his place among the stars.

Casting can make or break a film. Sometimes, directors make the daring choice to cast actors in roles that seem unconventional or unexpected. These unique choices can either turn into cinematic gold or leave audiences scratching their heads. Here’s a look at some of the most bizarre movie casting choices in Hollywood history. 1. Johnny...

1. Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”

When Johnny Depp stepped into the eccentric shoes of Willy Wonka, it was a far cry from the beloved performance of Gene Wilder in the 1971 classic. Depp’s portrayal was quirky and unsettling with a pale, childlike demeanor that divided fans and critics. His version gave a darker, more peculiar twist to the character, which was both admired and criticized.

Tom Cruise's Next Long-Delayed Sequel Needs To Be His Priority Over Top Gun 3

Jurassic world 4 rebooting the franchise makes 1 decision already very confusing, “i was ultra-clear about that”: michael keaton had 1 hardline condition for beetlejuice beetlejuice return, edge of tomorrow 2 development could be part of tom cruise's warner bros. deal, edge of tomorrow 2 update: emily blunt has read script, casts doubt on sequel.

  • Tom Cruise's new deal with Warner Bros. could finally make Edge of Tomorrow 2 happen after years of limbo.
  • Cruise's return to Warner Bros. could pave the way for Live Die Repeat and Repeat to move past pre-production.
  • Despite recent sequels with mixed results, Cruise is no longer hesitant to make sequels, making Edge of Tomorrow 2 more likely.

The long-awaited Edge of Tomorrow 2 might now be closer than ever thanks to a new deal between Tom Cruise and Warner Bros. Tom Cruise continues to be one of the most popular and profitable action stars in the film industry, a spot he has maintained since the 1980s, beginning with his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Tony Scott’s Top Gun . Cruise’s popularity continued throughout the 1990s thanks to Mission: Impossible and other projects outside the action genre, as were the comedy-drama Jerry Maguire and the psychological drama Eyes Wide Shut .

The expansion of the Mission: Impossible franchise has kept Cruise active in the action genre throughout the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s, but in 2014, he explored another side of this genre with Edge of Tomorrow . Based on the 2004 novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and directed by Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow takes the audience to a future where most of Europe is taken over by an alien race. When Major William Cage (Cruise) is forced to join a landing operation against them, he finds himself in a time loop. Despite Edge of Tomorrow ’s critical and commercial success, a sequel has been lost in limbo for years , but Cruise’s latest studio deal can finally make Edge of Tomorrow 2 happen.

While the idea of Top Gun 3 happening is exciting, Tom Cruise should shift his focus to a long-delayed sci-fi sequel that needs him to move forward.

Tom Cruise Has History With Warner Bros. (But Not In A Decade)

Cruise last worked with the studio on the original edge of tomorrow.

Warner Bros. has announced a new deal with Tom Cruise through which they will jointly develop and produce “ original and franchise theatrical films ” starring Cruise, beginning in 2024. This isn’t Tom Cruise’s first time working with Warner Bros., and this deal marks his big return to the studio. Warner Bros. is the studio behind some of Cruise’s biggest movies , such as Risky Business (which is widely considered his breakthrough role), the horror movie Interview with the Vampire (where he played Lestat), Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut , and Magnolia , for which Cruise got an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Cruise’s last project with Warner Bros. was Edge of Tomorrow , in 2014, so his return to the studio could be the push that Edge of Tomorrow 2 needs to finally happen. As mentioned above, Cruise’s new deal with Warner is to make movies both franchise and original, and Edge of Tomorrow being the last big success they had together, it’s a good sign for Edge of Tomorrow 2 .

Since Edge of Tomorrow , Cruise’s career has been mostly focused on expanding other franchises, mostly the Mission: Impossible one, but having him back again with Warner makes the expansion of Edge of Tomorrow a lot more likely .

Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Has Been Kicked Around For Years

All original players have expressed a desire to continue the story.

Despite not having an open ending, Edge of Tomorrow left the door open for a sequel as Cage fulfilled his mission and was thrown back to the past, though with a much brighter future. In 2016, Doug Liman signed on to direct the sequel , and that same year, he said Edge of Tomorrow 2 would “ revolutionize how people make sequels ” as it was “ a sequel that’s a prequel ” (via Collider ).

Tom Cruise’s deal with Warner Bros. can put an end to the scheduling conflicts that have been delaying Edge of Tomorrow 2...

The following year, the title for the sequel, Live Die Repeat and Repeat , was revealed, and Cruise and Blunt were said to be reprising their roles, but the project began to face a couple of obstacles, mostly the schedules of Blunt, Cruise, and Liman. Tom Cruise’s deal with Warner Bros. can put an end to the scheduling conflicts that have been delaying Edge of Tomorrow 2 , and if Blunt and Liman are still up for it, Live Die Repeat and Repeat could finally be on its way to moving past pre-production hell.

Tom Cruise Is Doing More Sequels Lately

Cruise has had disappointments and great successes with recent sequels.

Unlike a number of other high-profile Hollywood stars, Tom Cruise spent many years of his career largely avoiding franchise filmmaking. He kept the Mission: Impossible movies going, but the idea of him wanting to return for Edge of Tomorrow 2 was exciting because of how rare it was to have him return to a role. However, in recent years, Cruise has shown more of a willingness to make sequels which has had mixed results.

Following his box office success in bringing the character of Jack Reacher to the big screen, it seemed like a perfect franchise to carry on. However, the first attempt at a sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , was a financial and critical failure that ended those franchise plans and led to the character being rebooted as a television series with Alan Ritchson in the lead role.

While that wasn't a disappointment for Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick proved to exceed nearly everyone's expectations as a long-awaited follow-up movie. Decades after the 1986 original, Top Gun: Maverick saw Cruise return to the role of hotshot pilot Maverick in a film that became the highest-grossing movie of Cruise's career. Not only that, but it was a critical success as well, with it even earning a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.

With Mission: Impossible 8 also on the way , it is clear that Cruise is no longer as hesitant to make sequels. Even with missteps like Jack Reacher 2 , Cruise has a better track record with sequels than most actors. If Edge of Tomorrow 2 does indeed happen, it is safe to say that it is because Cruise sees it as a worthwhile project and not a mindless cash grab.

  • Trivia When Jack Reacher's car crashes into some barrels, the car accidentally stalled upon the impact, but Tom Cruise was luckily able to restart the car before driving off again. Rather than do a retake, Christopher McQuarrie decided to leave it in the film, as he felt it added to the suspense of the scene.
  • Goofs When Jack Reacher pulls out the Camaro's registration, it erroneously reads "State of Pennsylvania." Like three other states (KY, MA, and VA), Pennsylvania official designates itself as a "Commonwealth" not a "State."

Jack Reacher : What I mean is, the cheapest woman tends to be the one you pay for.

Sandy : [stands up, angrily] I am *not* a hooker!

Jack Reacher : Well, a hooker would get the joke.

Jeb : [enters with his four buddies] What's this?

Sandy : He called me a whore.

Jeb : Is that true?

Jack Reacher : Well, nobody said whore. She inferred hooker, but I meant slut.

Punk : Hey. That's our sister.

Jack Reacher : Is she a good kisser?

Jeb : Hey. Outside.

Jack Reacher : Pay your check first.

Jeb : I'll pay later.

Jack Reacher : You won't be able to.

Jeb : You think?

Jack Reacher : All the time. You should try it.

Jeb : It's a great joke, but I'm gonna beat your ass. Do you want to do that here or outside?

Jack Reacher : Outside.

Jeb : Stay here, Sandy.

Sandy : I don't mind the sight of blood.

Jack Reacher : [walks by Sandy] When it means you're not pregnant, anyway.
