Tom Cruise to visit S. Korea to promote new film

Shim Sun-ah, 심선아

SEOUL, June 5 (Yonhap) -- American actor Tom Cruise will visit South Korea once again to promote his new film, "Mission: Impossible -- Dead Reckoning Part One," this time, its local distributor said Monday.

Lotte Entertainment made the announcement but said the date and itinerary of his upcoming visit have not been fixed yet. But the visit is likely to come right before or after the South Korean release of the movie, which is set for July 12.

It would mark his 11th visit to South Korea since the first in 1994 to promote "Interview with the Vampire."

Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the upcoming movie is the seventh installment of the famous spy-action film franchise "Mission: Impossible" starring the American actor and producer Cruise.

The latest film follows Ethan Hunt as he struggles to prevent dangerous weapons that pose a risk to humanity from falling into the hands of villains.

Tom Cruise Turns Photographer for 'Mission Impossible' Costars: 'The Moment vs The Photo'

The Hollywood star stepped behind the lens to photograph Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff and Vanessa Kirby at the Seoul premiere of 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One'

Hayley Atwell/Instagram

Tom Cruise is stepping behind the lens for a new mission — capturing images of his beautiful co-stars!

The Hollywood legend delighted fans at the premiere of his new movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , in Seoul, South Korea on Thursday when he briefly commandeered a photographer’s camera to take a snap of his co-stars in the movie — Hayley Atwell , Pom Klementieff and Vanessa Kirby .

“This guy loves to give his leading ladies the spotlight 🌟” Atwell captioned a video of the moment she shared on Instagram Friday.

In the clip, a dapper-looking Cruise is handed a camera as he stands among a group of photographers at the event. Text over the screen reads “The Moment Vs The Photo,” as the actor familiarizes himself with the camera’s settings.

The 60-year-old actor and producer then crouches down to capture the three women posing in their gowns on a stage above the event's red carpet.

Determined to get the right angle, Cruise leans down to his right to ensure he's nailed the perfect shot. An image of the photograph then appears in the clip.

“How does it look,” a voice asks Cruise as he walks away.

“Good,” the actor replies with a smile.

It's been a week of championing fellow stars for Cruise, who took a break from his action-packed schedule promoting his latest Mission Impossible movie — which is released in theaters next month — to tweet about some summer movies he's looking forward to watching himself.

“This summer is full of amazing movies to see in theaters,” the actor  wrote on Wednesday, alongside photos  of himself and his  Dead Reckoning director  Christopher McQuarrie  in front of each of the films' respective posters.

Never miss a story — sign up for  PEOPLE's free daily newsletter  to stay up to date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Among the films he praised were  Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ,  the long-awaited sequel starring  Harrison Ford  as the legendary adventurer (out Friday), the atomic-bomb biographical thriller  Oppenheimer  starring  Cillian Murphy  as J. Robert Oppenheimer and  Barbie  with  Margot Robbie . The latter two films will be released on the same day: July 21.

"Congratulations, Harrison Ford, on 40 years of Indy and one of the most iconic characters in history," added Cruise. "I love a double feature, and it doesn't get more explosive  (or more pink)  than one with  Oppenheimer  and Barbie.”

Cruise also recently praised how people of different cultures "join together to enjoy cinema" at the Dead Reckoning  in Rome.

"It’s something that I grew up with, that made me and inspired me to dream and want to travel the world," Cruise said, reported Variety . “My  goal since I was little was to make movies  and travel. And not just be a tourist, but work in that world and understand their culture."

"Through my movies, I’ve been able to have that because everyone here has allowed me to entertain them. It’s a privilege that I have never taken for granted," he continued in his speech, highlighting the importance of seeing movies in theaters. "It’s my passion to entertain you, and I will always fight for big theaters and that kind of experience for everyone.”

Tom Cruise Is Facing 'the Most Stress' in His Career Ahead of 'Mission: Impossible 8' Release

In Hollywood, one minute you are up, and the next minute you are down. That's what Tom Cruise is facing right now as he's at a crossroads in his storied career. In the summer of 2022, he was riding the wave of Top Gun: Maverick ‘s success at the box office, but last summer, fans stayed away in droves from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One .

Now, Mission: Impossible 8 is reportedly facing more delays after an over $29 million submarine set piece malfunctioned, according to the Mirror . "They're not happy as it puts production behind, which costs a lot of money per day," an on-set insider shared. The May 2025 release is likely in jeopardy because they won't be able to finish the film in time for the scheduled premiere. This setback puts "the weight of the world on [Cruise's] shoulders" because there are "hundreds of millions of dollars on the line," per an In Touch source.

The insider noted that tensions are high and that nobody wants to get on the 61-year-old actor's "bad side between now and next summer." They added, "Sure, he can still flash his famous ‘million-dollar smile' when the cameras are rolling but more frequently he's stone-faced and on edge as he tries to finally bring this production to a close." It's " the most stress and adversity he's ever faced on a production" which is saying a lot after filing the seventh installment of Mission: Impossible "at the height of the pandemic."

Fans will remember "Tom's infamous audio rant recording from that time showed the whole world how stressed he was." It showed a darker side to the star, who rarely lets his A-list image slip . "They're back there in Hollywood making movies right now because of us. We are creating thousands of jobs, you motherf-ers," he yelled in the clip in audio obtained by The Sun in 2020. "I don't ever want to see it again! Ever! If I see you do it again, you're f-ing gone."

Cruise knows he needs to deliver big time for the studios and theater owners in 2025 because the summer of 2024, so far, has been abysmal at the box office. Anyone who has worked with the Days of Thunder star knows that he aims for perfection. Miles Teller recalled to Page Six that while filming Top Gun: Maverick , Cruise would tell his fellow actors, "‘We're trying to hit a bullet with a bullet.'" Those are some pretty high expectations to live up to.

Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

of Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

After his breakthrough with leading roles in ‘Risky Business’ and ‘ Top Gun ‘ in the 1980s, Thomas “Tom” Cruise Mapother IV started bagging pivotal roles in several dramas, including ‘ Born on the Fourth of July ,’ for which he even won a Golden Globe Award and got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. In the 1990s, he rose to newer heights of stardom by featuring in various commercially successful films, such as ‘ A Few Good Men ,’ ‘ Interview with the Vampire ,’ ‘The Firm,’ and ‘ Jerry Maguire .’

Once he impacted dramas, he started traversing the action and sci-fi genres. By landing some iconic roles in the ‘ Mission: Impossible ‘ film series, ‘ Collateral ,’ ‘ Edge of Tomorrow ,’ and ‘ Top Gun: Maverick ,’ he established himself as an action star, performing most of the risky stunts on his own. The winner of three Golden Globe Awards, four nominations for the Oscars, and an Honorary Palme d’Or, Tom Cruise is known to be one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Given his immense popularity and fandom, most of our readers are looking forward to his future projects. Here is a list of all the upcoming movies and TV shows of Tom Cruise!

1. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (2024)

Tom Cruise recently jumped off a cliff on a motorbike for ‘ Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ‘ and he will be in action soon enough in its sequel, ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.’ Helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, the spy action movie is the eighth installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series with Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt for the eighth time running.

tom cruise korea 2023

Although the plot details are kept under wraps, the action-adventure film is most likely to resume Ethan’s hunt for The Entity as he meets some new friends and foes along the way. The production for the sequel began in March 2022 but is yet to be finished due to the delay caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Having gone through several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to its release date, it is now officially set to be released on June 28, 2024. But it is very much possible that it will get postponed again due to the pause in production.

2. Untitled Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project (TBA)

tom cruise korea 2023

Tom Cruise is set to take his status as an action star to the next level by traveling out of Earth to film the first ever Hollywood motion picture in outer space. In May 2020, it was reported that Elon Musk’s Space X and Cruise were working on an action-adventure project with NASA. Not only is Cruise expected to be blasted into space alongside filmmaker Doug Liman, with whom he has previously worked in ‘ American Made ‘ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ for the upcoming film, but he will also live up to his reputation by attempting to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station. In this movie, Cruise is set to essay the role of a down-on-his-luck man who is the sole person in the position to save Earth. Apart from starring in the film, he is attached to the project as a writer as well as a producer.

3. Live Die Repeat and Repeat (TBA)

A sequel to the 2014 movie ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ ‘Live Die Repeat and Repeat’ is an upcoming science fiction film that will reportedly reunite Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman, with the former set to reprise his role as Major William Cage. Moreover, Emily Blunt is also rumored to portray Rita again, alongside Cruise. Ever since the release of the hit original film, talks of a sequel have been flying around. However, in 2019, it was finally set in motion when Matthew Robinson was brought on to write the script.

tom cruise korea 2023

Fast forward to a couple of years later, in a May 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly , Emily Blunt revealed, “That was an amazing script, but I just don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now. I don’t have the straight answer on that one.” With the project still lingering in the development stage, it is hard to expect it to be brought to life in at least a couple of years.

Suri Cruise turns 18 and is still estranged from Tom: ‘Not a Scientologist, never will be’

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Suri Cruise was once the most famous baby in America.

The arrival of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter on April 18, 2006, sparked a global frenzy for the first glimpse of the A-list infant.

But it wasn’t until five months after her birth that she made her debut — on the cover of Vanity Fair, wrapped in the arms of her doting parents, in glossy photos taken by photographer to the stars, Annie Leibovitz.

suri cruise in a shearling coat.

Now she turns 18 on Thursday and faces a choice: Whether to return to the level of fame she had as a kid — when there were blogs devoted to her fashion — or maintain the carefully-guarded life Holmes has built for her since she blindsided Cruise by filing for divorce.

The dark-haired teen has grown up in Manhattan largely shielded from the spotlight by her loving and highly protective mom, 45, far removed from her 60-year-old father’s Church of Scientology.

As Page Six revealed last year, Suri is estranged from her famous father and the pair have no relationship.

Tom Cruise smiles as he holds Suri Cruise, with Katie Holmes beside him.

An industry source told us this week that the “Mission: Impossible” star has not seen Suri since 2012. “Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mom,” the source said.

“This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”

Holmes told Glamour magazine in 2023 that she likes to “protect” Suri from the public eye “because she was so visible at a young age.”

“I’m very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She’s an incredible person. She’s my heart,” she added.

Suri Cruise jumps in the water with her dad Tom Cruise at Disney World.

Being the only daughter of a protective single parent is a stark contrast to how Suri’s life began, of course.

“My whole life I always wanted to be a father,” Cruise gushed to VF back in 2006.

“I always said to myself that my children would be able to depend on me and I would always be there for them and love them — that I’d never make a promise to my kids that I couldn’t keep.

Tom Cruise holds Suri Cruise as they leave her gymnastics class in NYC in July 2012.

“I’m not one of those people who believe you can spoil a child with too much love. You can never give a child too much love. There’s just no way.”

He already had two adopted children, Bella, now 31, and Connor, now 29, from his marriage to Nicole Kidman and after her Vanity Fair debut was happy to parade Suri for the paparazzi.

Cruise had famously declared their romance by jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch in May 2005, yelling “I’m in love!”

Tom Cruise and Suri Cruise, in a pink dress, at the Friars Club awards.

But when Suri was just 6, Holmes filed for divorce after six years of marriage with the help of her dad, Martin Holmes, a fierce attorney, and through a secret plan that entailed using burner phones.

Cruise was taken completely by surprise by the filing while he was on the set of “Oblivion” in Iceland in June 2012.

He and Suri were last seen together at Disney World in the summer of 2012.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise ride the Schenley Plaza's carousel.

In November 2013, during a deposition in his $50 million court battle against a pair of tabloid magazines, the “Top Gun” star admitted that Holmes had filed for divorce “to protect Suri from Scientology,” court documents revealed.

Despite not having a relationship; as per their divorce agreement, Cruise, who has an estimated $600 million fortune, agreed to pay Holmes $400,000 a year until Suri turns 18 as well as future “medical, dental, insurance, education, college and other extracurricular costs”.

Scientology lies at the heart of the question over Suri’s future.

Tom Cruise carries Suri Cruise on set in Sevilla, Spain.

Holmes, who rose to fame in the TV hit, “Dawson’s Creek,” is believed to have signed multiple non-disclosure documents that will prevent her from ever talking about her marriage to Cruise — and her time inside Scientology.

But when Suri turns 18, NY state declares that she is at the age of majority, when an individual is legally considered an adult.

That would allow her to speak about her father, his beliefs and their rift.

Tony Ortega, who has covered Scientology in depth for decades, told Page Six, “Suri would have been too young to sign any agreement, but she will now be free to talk if she wants to and it’s going to be really interesting if she has something to say.”

Tom Cruise holds Bella Cruise, while Nicole Kidman holds Connor Cruise.

We have reached out to reps for Cruise, Holmes and the Church of Scientology.

“Part of why Katie left when she did when Suri was 6 was that Katie would have seen Isabella and Connor going through Scientology,” said Ortega.

Cruise is of course Scientology’s most famous follower and seen as one of its most powerful figures, possibly second only to its leader, David Miscavige.

Tom Cruise jumps on Oprah Winfrey's sofa.

That power has led Ortega and former Scientologists to question what action Miscavige and other top Scientologists may have taken against Holmes and her daughter.

Regular members who quit are declared “suppressive persons (SP)” and those who stay in Scientology are told to completely cut them off.

“We don’t know for sure if Katie was ever declared an SP,” Ortega said.

“If you are a regular church member you could be told to disconnect from your wife and daughter, but because Tom is a celebrity — he’s  the top celebrity — he gets to ignore all this stuff.

“Your average member would be kicked out, but David Miscavige can’t do that with Tom.”

Both Mike Rinder and Jeff Augustine, two high-profile former Scientologists, agreed with this claim.

Suri Cruise and Katie Holmes go dog walking in Central Park, NYC.

Augustine is married to Karen de la Carriere, who was one of the highest-ranking church leaders until she left in 2010 and told Page Six, “The situation with Suri is a larger story about Scientology and the subject of how they make people no longer useful to them or threats to them non-persons.

“It’s like they cease to exist and that’s what happened to Suri.”

Back in August 2020, Leah Remini — one of the most famous celebrities to leave and speak out against Scientology — told us that she believed Cruise, who now lives mainly in the UK , was waiting until Suri is older so he could indoctrinate her into Scientology.

Suri Cruise and Katie Holmes hold hands as they go shopping.

Remini, who attended Cruise and Holmes’ November 2006 Italian wedding at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle, said, “I’m sure his master plan is to wait until Suri gets older so that he can lure her into Scientology and away from her mother.”

Suri has tiptoed very gently into her parents’ showbusiness world while attending her exclusive Manhattan day school, singing “Blue Moon” in the opening credits of Holmes’ 2022 movie, “Alone Together.”

“I always want the highest level of talent,” Holmes said. “So I asked her! She’s very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing.”

Suri also sang in the film “Rare Objects,” which Holmes also directed.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes hold hands and cuddle after getting married.

Holmes will this year return to Broadway in a revival of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town”.

She has not remarried but had a six-year romance with actor Jamie Foxx which she kept under the radar before their split in August 2019 and went on to have a brief fling with  Nolita restaurateur Emilio Vitolo Jr. in 2021.

Holmes is careful not to speak out too much about her daughter, who is now preparing for college, once saying, “She came out very strong — she’s always been a strong personality.”

Tom Cruise hugs his children, Bella and Connor Cruise.

But she is now getting ready for her daughter to leave the nest.

“You want them to stay with you forever, but they’re these amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need — and then they’re going to go,” she told Town & Country in 2017.

“And that’s going to be very, very sad for me.”

As for the future, former Scientology spokesperson Mike Rinder, who has not seen his own two eldest children since he quit the organization, told Page Six, “Suri is not a Scientologist and never will be…she deserves love and sympathy.”

The Week's Biggest Movie News: 'Knives Out 3's New Suspects, G.I. Hemsworth, and More

The 10 best action thrillers of the 2010s, ranked, how to watch daisy ridley in the inspiring new movie ‘young woman and the sea’, read update.

Tom Cruise will be back on the big screen with the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (July 12). The three-time Oscar nominee has built a successful late career with this highly successful franchise, producing numerous sequels to one of his most iconic films. However, his filmography has several other acclaimed movies that could use a sequel, especially after last year's record-breaking Top Gun: Maverick .

Top Gun: Maverick has made a big splash at the box office, making $1.023 billion. It proves that people will still go to the movie theaters if something is playing; they are willing to pay to see it instead of finding something to stream.

Top Gun may be a 30-year-old movie, but it is a movie that fans are willing to pay and see, and because of the success of Top Gun: Maverick , there may be other Tom Cruise movies that need a sequel.

Updated on June 30, 2023, by David Caballero:

10 'risky business' (1983).

Risky Business is the movie that launched Tom Cruise into 80s superstardom and cemented him as one of the decade's biggest draws. The future movie star plays rich teen Joel Goodsen, who explores his sexuality and turns his home into a brothel during his parents' vacation trip.

Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay 's Lana had great chemistry in Risky Business . Having these two characters cross paths again almost 40 years later would be interesting. What kind of work does Joel do now? Is Lana up to something interesting these days?

Watch on Paramount+

9 'The Color of Money' (1986)

The Color of Money is a Martin Scorsese movie that doesn't get the accolades of other films like Goodfellas , Taxi Driver , or The Departed . Many people don't know that The Color of Money is a sequel to the classic film The Hustler , also starring the late and iconic Paul Newman .

It would have been interesting to see Paul Newman and Tom Cruise on screen again. However, revisiting Cruise's character Vincent Lauria would still be great. Is he still arrogant and cocky like he was when he was younger, or has he matured? Does he hustle solo, or has he now become the mentor?

Watch on Tubi

8 'Cocktail' (1988)

The often mocked and critically reviled Cocktail is a movie that Tom Cruise probably wishes was forgotten. But despite all the hostility this film has received, it made a lot of money on its original release and has some excellent mixing drink scenes.

Cocktail is a movie that would probably be a better reboot than a sequel. Maybe cast Austin Butler as Cruise's character, Brian Flanagan. A sequel could be enjoyable, though. Was Brian Flanagan's business a huge success or a big flop? Did Brain and Jordan's ( Elizabeth Shue ) marriage work out, or are they now divorced?

Watch on Hulu

7 'Rain Man' (1988)

Barry Levinson 's 1988 drama Rain Man stars Cruise opposite Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman . The plot follows Charlie, a carefree young man who reunites with his brother Raymond, an autistic savant, following their father's death. Rain Man was a major box-office success and won several Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Hoffman.

A sequel to Rain Man could be interesting to explore, especially considering its bittersweet ending. Did Charlie and Raymond stay in touch despite the challenges? However, any potential follow-up would receive considerable criticism, considering Hoffman, a neurotypical actor, would be portraying a character with autism.

6 'Jerry Maguire' (1996)

Cruise delivers arguably the best performance of his career in Cameron Crowe 's 1996 sports romantic comedy Jerry Maguire . The actor plays the titular role, a sports agent who starts his own management business, joined only by Dorothy Boyd, a young single mother. With only one client to his name, Jerry falls in love with Dorothy as he tries to make his business work.

Jerry Maguire is among the all-time best romantic comedies . Cruise gives his most heartfelt, earnest performance as the slick and spirited Jerry Maguire, creating a compelling and sympathetic figure audiences fall instantly in love with. A sequel would be ideal, allowing fans to see how Jerry's business went and how his relationship with Dorthy developed.

5 'Magnolia' (1999)

Paul Thomas Anderson 's Magnolia isn't everybody's cup of tea; thus, a sequel might not be a particularly great idea. But a movie about an aging Frank TJ Mackey could be compelling. Cruise shocked and won over audiences by playing the misogynistic character Frank TJ Mackie. He is a charismatic jerk who teaches desperate guys how to get laid with his motivational speeches and products.

Cruise delivers career-best work in Magnolia , and it would be interesting to revisit a character like TJ Mackey over 20 years later. Has he changed? Is he still a jerk, or did his encounter with his father in Magnolia change him?

4 'Minority Report' (2022)

Cruise stars in Steven Spielberg 's 2002 sci-fi action thriller Minority Report . Set in a future where a police organization can stop crimes before they happen using clairvoyants known as "precogs," the plot centers on John Anderton, a man on the run after being accused of a crime he hasn't committed yet.

A chilling movie about the dangers of surveillance , Minority Report is among Spielberg's most interesting and thought-provoking efforts. A sequel could explore the fate of the prisoners released at the film's ending while following the precogs' stories. Cruise and Samantha Morton would return, ideally with Spielberg's involvement.

Watch on Showtime

3 'Tropic Thunder' (2008)

Ben Stiller directed and starred in the 2008 war comedy Tropic Thunder . The plot centers on a group of arrogant actors shooting a war movie without realizing they have been dropped in an actual war. Cruise plays the scene-stealing supporting role of Les Grossman, the film's vulgar producer.

Tropic Thunder is among the 21st century's best war comedies . Cruise delivers an outrageous performance as the over-the-top and profane Les Grossman, becoming one of the film's most memorable aspects. A sequel focusing on Grossman would allow Cruise to flex his comedic muscles while delivering another scathing satire of Hollywood.

2 'Knight and Day' (2010)

Cruise stars opposite Cameron Diaz in James Mangold 's romantic action thriller Knight and Day . The story revolves around the quirky June Havens, a woman who becomes accidentally involved in a dangerous plot after meeting the charming Roy Miller in an airport on her way to her sister's wedding.

Benefitting from Cruise and Diaz's electric chemistry, Knight and Day expertly blends romance with action and humor. A sequel would continue June and Roy's story, perhaps showing them on another globe-trotting mission together. Audiences hardly need a reason to see these two movie stars together, especially if they're kicking bad guys' butts!

1 'Edge of Tomorrow' (2014)

Doug Liman 's ambitious and cerebral sci-fi Edge of Tomorrow stars Cruise and Emily Blunt . The plot follows Major William Cage, a PR official with no combat experience, who finds himself trapped in a time loop after being sent to battle during a violent alien invasion.

Cruise and Blunt are perfect together, with the actor delivering one of his most unexpectedly vulnerable performances. The film ends with a decisive victory for humanity; however, Edge of Tomorrow 's weighty plot leaves several possibilities open, and making a sequel would be an easy and rewarding task.

Glen Powell Recalls Tom Cruise Pranking Him by Pretending to Lose Control of Helicopter, Dropping Altitude

For a moment, Powell thought he was "about to be the unnamed guy that dies with Tom."

Glen Powell has a few hilarious memories from his time working with Tom Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick .

In an interview with Ben Allen for GQ Magazine , Powell revealed that Cruise once pranked him by pretending to lose control of his helicopter.

"Tom goes 'oh no, oh no,' and he starts dropping the helicopter over London," shared Powell, who noted that Cruise personally flew him from London to Pinewood Studios for Top Gun reshoots. "I was like, 'Am I about to be the unnamed guy that dies with Tom in a smoking hole in the middle of London?'"

Cruise, who frequently jumps at the chance to do his own stunts in the Mission: Impossible series, is a licensed helicopter pilot and piloted a P-51 Mustang, which he also owns , during one of the pivotal scenes in Maverick .

Elsewhere in the interview, Powell revealed that Cruise showed him a six-hour "film school" movie that he shows to his collaborators and friends.

"He said, 'This is just for my friends,'" said Powell. "[Cruise] is like: 'Do we all agree that this is what a camera is? This is the difference between a film camera and a digital camera…' The funniest part is on flying. It was like he put together this entire flight school. So he would literally go 'OK, this is what a plane is. Here’s how things fly. Here's how air pressure works.'"

Powell is also a licensed pilot, something Cruise gave him as a Christmas present, as the actor revealed in 2021.

"I thought I could be Tom Cruise," said Powell, who added that he hasn't taken to the skies quite as often as Cruise has. "He has a helicopter and he’s flying actual jets. If I have to pop over to New York or Texas, in this SR-22 [a relatively modest five-seater, one-engine aircraft], it’ll take me forever."

He considers Cruise a good friend and said they were able to bond over their obsession with movies.

"That was our love language on set. I got to watch a guy who knew every department," he said. "He was able to clearly interface with everyone, and be so friendly and respectful and be able to communicate that vision."

Powell's got a big summer lined up following the success of the 2023 romantic comedy Anyone But You , in which he starred opposite Sydney Sweeney . First up is the Richard Linklater-directed action-comedy Hit Man , which hits Netflix on June 7, followed by Twisters on July 19.

Having received a rapturous reception a week earlier in Cannes George Miller’s “ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ” grabbed a more muted win at the South Korean box office .

“Furiosa” opened with $3.35 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That represented a 39.5% share of the weekend’s total cinema-going market.

Popular on Variety

Set in a post-apocalyptic world before the events of “Fury Road,” “Furiosa” stars Anya Taylor-Joy, taking over in the title role from Charlize Theron. Early in the film, a young Furiosa is kidnapped and imprisoned by a group of bandits known led by Warlord Dementus, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth.

In claiming the top spot, “Furiosa” deposed “The Roundup: Punishment,” the local crime actioner that had dominated Korean cinemagoing for the past month.

In its fifth weekend of release, “The Roundup: Punishment” slipped to second place and earned $1.58 million. Since releasing on April 28, “Punishment” has earned $77.3 million, making it the second most successful film this year in Korea.

Korean mystery thriller, “Following” placed third. It earned $1.46 million between Friday and Sunday, a strong week-on-week hold, that was down only 14% on its opening session. After 12 days on release, it has earned $5.0 million.

Retaining its fourth place from a week earlier, Japanese animation “Haikyu! The Dumpster Battle” earned $581,000. In 12 days, it has earned $3.81 million.

“18×2 Beyond Youthful Days,” an ambitious Japan-Taiwan coproduction film with a romance theme, opened in sixth place. It earned $357,000 over the weekend and $539,000 over its opening five days. Directed by Fujii Michihito, the film has enjoyed festival play in Italy’s Udine and has had a coordinated commercial release in other parts of East Asia since March – including mainland China.

“The Garfield Movie” earned $311,000 on its second weekend in Korea. Over 12 days, it has amassed $1.68 million.

Also released in Korea a week earlier, “IF” slipped to eighth position. It earned $102,000 over the weekend for a 12-day cumulative of $653,000.

Japanese re-release, “The Last 10 Years” earned $48,000 in ninth place, while Australian horror “Late Night With the Devil” rounded out the top ten in Korea with $44,200 over the weekend, for a 19 day total of $632,000.
