Rascals’ Cavaliere and Cornish Set ‘Time Peace’ Tour

the rascals tour 2022

Founding members Eddie Briganti is not part of this tour. Dino Danelli died on Dec. 15, 2022, at age 78.

With songs like “Good Lovin’,” “Groovin’,” “A Beautiful Morning,” “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long,” “People Got To Be Free,” and “How Can I Be Sure,” The Rascals are considered the best “blue-eyed soul” group to come out of the 1960s. Lead singer and songwriter and organist Cavaliere and lead guitarist Cornish, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, Grammy Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Songwriter Hall of Fame members, returned to the stage in November 2022 for the first time since 2018.

Cavaliere , who turned 78 on Nov. 29, recently published an autobiography, Memoir Of A Rascal…From Pelham, NY to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame . Cornish, whose own autobiography, Good Lovin’: My Life as a Rascal , was published in 2020, is especially grateful to return to the stage. Cornish collapsed on Sept. 7, 2018, while on tour with Cavaliere. He received a pacemaker and is back performing.

“This gives us another chance to play together and do it for the fans,” said Cornish, who turns 79 on May 14.

Please come to Minneapolis. Please? We’d love to see the Rascals play live. (I saw them back in the sixties, down in Orlando, FL, and they were awesome.)

Paul

The Rascals really aren’t The Rascals without great dummer Dino Danelli.

Phoenix in November is just right. We have this cool venue with a revolving stage. The Celebrity Theater. Make it a golf weekend with Alice Cooper.

Jim

We had tickets for their Dream Tour for Baltimore when it got canceled. So glad they’re touring together again, but wish Dino was with them. Such a great litany of songs !

Da Mick

I’m in agreement with you all, and don’t understand why Dino does not participate, unless it’s age or medically related. I did see the “Once Upon A Dream” show, and it was incredible. It’s already been some years now, but Dino sounded pretty great then, and even Eddie rounded into tear-jerking form after coming out of decades of retirement. I’ll never understand why or how there was such a lack of interest in that show, to the point that many of their shows were canceled. For me, “Once Upon A Dream” was a dream come true. Hope they have success with this tour and see fit to expand it.

As with almost all things, being in a band, apparently even in your 70s, isn’t as simple or necessarily as easy as it might appear from the outside. After posing the question about why Dino doesn’t join Felix and Gene, I did some back research and read some pretty wide-ranging things from some of the members. While Felix talks of working with a Guru to subvert his own ego during the “Once Upon A Dream” tour, Dino flat out lets his scorn of Felix fly for his need to control everything along with his levels of self-entitlement that, evidently has not lessened over the decades. While it was never outrightly said, it was inferred that a grab of songwriting royalties by Felix had much to do with Eddie’s unwillingness to be involved further both back then and now. Whereas Dino was completely infuriated by many of Felix’s demands during “Dream,” including an uneven split of the touring proceeds among the original members. Apparently, for these reasons “Dream” was discontinued, and it is unlikely we’ll see Dino or Eddie touring with Felix again. I guess, after many attempts at staging acts with a couple of The Rascals over the years, Gene has found his peace with whatever Felix requires for them to tour together. Having seen both Felix’s “Rascals,” and the original band in “Dream,” there’s just no comparison — not even close. It’s a tragic shame that these kinds of conflicts continue to compromise something so incredible into something that’s such a pale, watered-down shadow of what had been, and could still be, great. But in reaching those later ages myself, I’ve been surprised to discover that people, and in particular musicians, don’t really change that much, as foolish as the things that often divide them may be.

Junior

Interesting as it’s never been clear to me what the cause of the break up was back in 1970 but obviously Eddie had issues. It was Dino who stayed with Felix in the early 70’s during their Columbia years. Didn’t know the “Once Upon the Dream” stuff, thanks for the research and info!

Where’s Eddie Brigati? He’s 1/4 of the Rascals too.

Well, obviously life has changed the hopes of many for this situation from even August of 22, and, tragically, our dear Dino is no longer with us. On the positive side, I’d seen Felix a few times before the reformed band did the “Dream” tour, and he always seemed to be trying to make it work with a scant number of musicians, which really didn’t work for the Rascals’ music. I’m so thrilled that if “Dream” accomplished anything, it gave Felix the perspective that if he was going to continue going out and doing the Rascals’ music, he needed to have a band that could do it thrilling justice, as the “Dream” orchestra indeed did. I so look forward to seeing him again now. As for Gene, I’m thrilled that he’s recuperated from his frightening heart episode, but quite honestly, without his dancing moves while playing guitar, I just don’t know what he brings to these shows sitting in a chair. Maybe it was time for him to retire after his hospitalization. But you have to love the guy’s spirit and desire to still be performing. Speaking of spirit, Felix sounds great in this video; his voice still has that soul. After all the things I read about Felix that I wrote in earlier posts above, I’m amazed that he is essentially carrying Gene in these shows. That shows a lot of love and unselfishness, and I congratulate him as it’s more than just his voice that has soul. Now, if only Eddie could find it in his heart to come back. He seemed to love doing the “Dream” show.

Lyn

Wish Eddie was with the 3023 tour! Loved seeing him in Dream! I saw the play two nights in Philly! They were FABULOUS! Felix, bring Eddie back! You need him!

The Rascals Featuring Felix Cavaliere & Gene Cornish: Time Peace Tour

Two legendary founders of The Rascals are together again. Felix Cavaliere and Gene Cornish cite the fans and love of their timeless songs as reasons for collaboration. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, Grammy Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Songwriter Hall of Fame members, The Rascals are widely considered the best ‘blue-eyed soul’ group to come out of the 1960s and their music is the soundtrack of a generation. The Rascals have 17 Top 20 hits, seven Top 10 hits, and three No.1 hits that include “Groovin’, “People Got To Be Free” and “Good Lovin’.”

The next chapter of The Rascals is about to begin – two of the founders of the legendary rock ‘n’ roll band are once again taking to the stage to continue their legacy that started 57 years ago.

With No. 1 songs like “Good Lovin’”, “Groovin’”, “A Beautiful Morning”, “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long”, “People Got To Be Free” and “How Can I Be Sure”, The Rascals are considered the best ‘blue-eyed soul’ group to come out of the 1960s. Lead singer/songwriter and organist Felix Cavaliere and lead guitarist Gene Cornish, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, Grammy Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Songwriter Hall of Fame members, hit the stage this November for the first time since 2018. With time comes peace of mind knowing that their collection of songs endure,

“We’re so grateful for the fans, this is for them,” Cavaliere, whose autobiography “Memoir Of A Rascal…From Pelham, NY to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame” recently came out, said.

Cornish, whose own autobiography “Good Lovin’: My Life as a Rascal” came out in 2020, is especially grateful to return to the stage. While on tour with Cavaliere in 2018, Cornish collapsed while performing the opening sequence to “A Beautiful Morning”. Cornish received a pacemaker and is ready to perform.

“This gives us another chance to play together and do it for the fans,” Cornish said.

The tour takes The Rascals to familiar markets, many of which they played during their meteoric rise in 1965. Starting out as The Young Rascals they caught the attention of promoter/manager Sid Bernstein with their high-energy set at Long Island’s elite club, Barge. Signed to Atlantic Records, and now called The Rascals, they would become a mainstay on The Ed Sullivan Show and sell over 30 million records.

Eddie Briganti and Dino Danelli are not part of this tour.

FELIX CAVALIERE’S RASCALS & MICKY DOLENZ

Get Tickets

Two iconic musical voices of a generation – Felix Cavaliere of The Rascals and Micky Dolenz the Voice of The Monkees—have joined together for a magical night of music. Cavaliere, whose illustrious career includes the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriter Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, Grammy Hall of Fame and Musicians Hall of Fame, has garnered three No. 1 hits, seven Top 10 hits, and 20 Top 40 hits. Dolenz, who with The Monkees earned four Grammy nominations, is a two-time Emmy Winner, has sold over 65 million records, has achieved three No. 1 hits, 6 Top 10 hits and 12 Top 40 hits.

“I have known Micky for 50 years, we have played together many times,” Cavaliere said. “I have so many memories and laughs from the times we have shared. He is a tremendous talent and entertainer. I am very excited about our tour and the nonstop laughs ahead.”

I have always been a fan of Felix as a consummate vocalist and stage performer,” Dolenz said. “Performing with him over the years has been an honor and a gas. A Rascal and a Monkee… What could be more fun?”

Early in 1965, Cavaliere formed the ‘Young Rascals’ with Dino Danelli, Eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish. That October, they caught the attention of promoter/manager Sid Bernstein with their high-energy set at Long Island’s elite club, Barge. Signed to Atlantic Records, and now called The Rascals, the mega hit “Good Lovin’” struck No. 1 in February 1966. They followed suit with a string of hits like “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long,” “Groovin’”(No. 1 in 1967), “How Can I Be Sure,” “A Girl Like You,” “A Beautiful Morning,” and “People Got to Be Free” (No. 1 in 1968). The Rascals are considered the best ‘blue-eyed soul’ group to come out of the 1960s, as well as one of the groups with the most record sales.

Originally conceived for television audiences in 1965, The Monkees aired for two seasons (52 episodes) on NBC. The situational comedy centered on a band trying to make it big, featuring Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork and Davy Jones. The show was an instant double-barrel smash catapulting both the show and music headfirst into pop culture.

Both the show and music were again catapulted to the public forefront when MTV aired reruns in the 1980’s. And, the group’s reunion tour in 1986 was the year’s highest grossing tours.

Dolenz can be heard on the smash hits “Last Train To Clarksville”, “I’m A Believer”, “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone”, “Pleasant Valley Sunday” as well as the theme song to the TV show. Other Monkees’ top hits include “Daydream Believer”, “Valleri” and ”DW Washburn.”

Dolenz’ 2021 solo album, “Dolenz Sings Nesmith” earned some of the best reviews of his career and has landed on several Best Of Lists for 2021. Huffington Post called Dolenz’s voice “a combination of Roy Orbison and Freddie Mercury.”

Review: the rascals featuring felix cavaliere & gene cornish at state theatre new jersey.

' src=

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 by fellow New Jerseyan Steven Van Zandt (E. Street band, Disciples of Soul) but The Rascals have been rock and roll royalty since their cover of “Good Lovin” topped the Billboard Pop chart in the spring of 1966. A milestone that quickly grabbed the attention of Ed Sullivan and The Young Rascals, their original band name, were immediately booked to perform on his show.

The Rascals’ appearance on March 20, 1966, was the first of 5 appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show through the band’s most critically acclaimed years from 1966-1968.  A span that produced many additional hit songs.

Since they disbanded in the early 1970s, the band has reunited in various forms over the years. The most recent incarnation of The Rascals began in November of 2022.

As Rascals guitarist Gene Cornish recalled in my recent interview, he and vocalist/keyboardist Felix Cavaliere asked co-founding member Eddie Brigati if he was interested to join the tour. But he turned down their request.  They also tried to recruit drummer Dino Daneli.

Unfortunately, Dino was dealing with health issues that prevented him from touring and sadly passed away on December 15, 2022. Gene and Felix were still set on bringing the music that touched their soul and so many others back to the live stage and they both set out on The Rascals Time Peace Tour.

Since last fall, The Rascals have performed in front of their New Jersey home crowd a few times. This past Saturday night, The Rascals performed at State Theater in New Brunswick.

What was once a 4 piece band is now an ensemble of 6 including a 3 piece horn section. As soon as the lights when down in the theater, the almost sold-out anxious crowd, was presented not only with a sonic flashback to the past, but a visual one as well.  As the band played their hits including “A Beautiful Morning”, A Girl Like You”, “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long”, “How Can I Be Sure”, “People Got To Be Free”, Groovin” and Good Lovin” among others, the big screen backdrop projected images of the band’s heyday performances.

Images of Felix, Gene, Eddie, and Dino proudly flexing their younger muscles with those hit after hit, as the newer versions of sound and vision were duplicated live on stage.  What was really neat was how they created medleys of music, intertwining other songs of the time within their hits, increasing the journey of your musical imagination.

Staying true to form as a frontman, Cavaliere bounced around the stage offering the fans energy to compliment the music.  I would have hoped he stayed true to form as the singer.  His stage movements distracted me from truly embracing the songs.  As with any song, the history of their success always has a story.

I did enjoy the back-and-forth between Felix and Gene Cornish as they told tales and reminisced about the songs’ accountings.  One story, in particular, was when Mack Rice who wrote “Mustang Sally” thanked Cavaliere for putting The Rascals cover of his song as the B-side of “Good Lovin”.

Due to the success of Good Lovin on the A-side, the way royalties were paid by records sold, the B-side writer was paid equally.

If you missed the show, The Rascals have 4 more dates on their 2023 tour.  See the complete schedule here …

About The Rascals

2024 PEOPLE GOT TO BE FREE TOUR

Two legendary founders of The Rascals are together again. Felix Cavaliere and Gene Cornish cite the fans and love of their timeless songs as reasons for collaboration. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, Grammy Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Songwriter Hall of Fame members, The Rascals are widely considered the best ‘blue-eyed soul’ group to come out of the 1960s and their music is the soundtrack of a generation. The Rascals have 17 Top 20 hits, seven Top 10 hits, and three No.1 hits that include “Groovin’, “People Got To Be Free” and “Good Lovin’.”“We’re so grateful for the fans, this is for them,” Felix Cavaliere said. “This gives us another chance to play together and do it for the fans,” Gene Cornish said.

Per New York City’s guidance, Sony Hall is requiring all guests, staff & musicians ages 12+ to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to enter. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Rascals are ready for the Seaside Heights beach

On the road//2 minute read.

the rascals tour 2022

In 2018, Maruca's Tomato Pies came to the Asbury Park boardwalk from Seaside Heights. This year, Asbury Park returns the favor: Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, with the Rascals, play on the beach in Seaside Heights on Saturday, June 29.

“People want someplace to go in the summer, and we’re happy to provide that,” said Southside Johnny Lyon.

The show will take place on the stage at Blain Avenue. Southside Johnny and the Jukes have played a variety of outdoor music venues at the Jersey Shore, including the top of the Windmill hotdog stand in Long Beach; a parking lot at Monmouth Park in Oceanport during COVID; and the beach in Asbury Park during the famous WNEW shows in the 1980s.

Now, bring on the Seaside Heights beach.

“I just want to be let loose on stage and I’ll do my best to give everybody a great time,” said Southside who noted that he's feeling fine after leaving the stage during a show at the Stone Pony in February. He was taken to the hospital for tests.

“A momentary glitch in the machine, that's all,” Southside said.

The Jukes hits include “Talk to Me,” “All I Want Is Everything,” “Hearts of Stone,” “Trapped Again,” “I Don’t Want to Go Home,” “It’s Been a Long Time” and “Having a Party.”

The guys also play Friday, June 28, at the Rock, Ribs and Ridges Festival, which runs through Sunday, June 30, at Sussex County Fairgrounds. Molly Hatchet, Larkin Poe, the Outlaws and more are also on the bill.

The Rascals, featuring Felix Cavaliere, are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and their hits include “Groovin’,” “People Got To Be Free,” “I've Been Lonely Too Long” and “Good Lovin’.” The band was founded in Garfield by Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati, Gene Cornish and the late Dino Danelli.

No pets except service animals are allowed, nor is alcohol allowed into the performance area — but there will be alcohol available for purchase. Fans can bring beach towels, sheets and small beach chairs, but umbrellas are not allowed.

  • Peach Tree Rascals build a live audience after viral success of “Mariposa”

Written by Vocalo Radio on June 26, 2024

Five-piece California group Peach Tree Rascals found their audience before they played their first live show.

Founded by San Jose high school friends Issac Pech, Tarrek Abdel-Khaliq and Dom Pizano, later joined by Jorge Olazaba and Joseph Barros, the band released their breakout single “Mariposa” in August 2019. Shortly afterward, during the COVID-19 lockdown, the group was surprised to learn the track went viral on TikTok — especially since none of them were active app users. Several band members joined Vocalo’s Nudia Hernandez in studio recently and described the experience.

“It was weird,” rapper Pech said. “We’d kind of get word of it, and then go on TikTok — specifically just to see the progress and how it’s going.”

Throughout this isolated period, unable to perform the song in person, the band felt the TikTok videos were an important window into their listeners’ lives.

“Looking back at it, you don’t really remember how tough of a time it was,” singer and songwriter Abdel-Khaliq said. “Getting to see people smile and dance to our songs during a time like that, just altogether felt really good.”

The group is currently on their first-ever North American show run, the “For You Tour,” where they finally get to perform “Mariposa” and more for fans who have been around since their virtual show days. Ending June 29, the tour spans 19 cities in 27 days, including a stop at Chicago’s Beat Kitchen.

“Three, four years [later], to see in person the fans that were in some of those chat rooms and video calls, it just feels like they waited a long time,” Adbel-Khaliq said. “It’s validating to see that they have stuck with us all this time.”

the rascals tour 2022

“Every show, all the tiredness, all the driving, all the lack of sleep, none of that matters once it’s showtime,” Pech said. “When we get on that stage, and there’s hundreds of people that paid their hard-earned money to come see us sing our songs, there’s no time for anything other than giving them the best show possible.”

Peach Tree Rascals released their debut album Camp Nowhere in March 2021, following it up with EPs Does A Fish Know It’s Wet? and End of Time in 2022. Gearing up for their first tour, the band took a break in 2023 to stockpile singles for release this year, including “Lately I” and “Airplane Window.” Though “Mariposa” is still their most popular track  — now with more than 300 million Spotify streams and 74 million YouTube views — the group has learned to block out the pressure of releasing another viral hit and continue making music from the heart.

“Every song we release we feel like it has potential to have a moment as big as any other song,” Abdel-Khaliq explained. “We’re able to figure out how to filter through all the noise and just get back to what we’ve been doing from the beginning. I think that’s gonna give us the best chances of getting another ‘Mariposa’ in terms of numbers.”

Throughout their five-year history releasing music, friendship has remained a constant strong foundation for the group. The band members expressed gratitude for each other and their ability to continue working together while staying friends throughout all of the ups and downs they’ve encountered.

“A lot of times success could drive people apart,” Pech said. “I think the friendship that we established, previous to making music as a group, is what’s held us together for this long.”

Nudia Hernandez: We have the Peach Tree Rascals in the building. Hello, guys!

All: Hello!

NH: I mean, there’s a few of you, if we want to do introductions really quick. Who’s everyone?

Issac Pech: Alright, so I’m Issac. I’m the rapper of the group.

Tarrek Adel-Khaliq: My name is Tarrek. I sing and I songwrite. And I dance.

Dom Pizano: I’m Dom. I’m the producer, and I sing, too. A little bit.

NH: Alright! We love the song [“Mariposa”]. And I mean, a lot of people loved it, too. There’s so many interesting parts about your guys’ story. There’s so many interesting things that I think are so 2024. Things that could only happen in the 2020s, really, they all kind of happened to you guys as a musical group. The most interesting thing that I was looking at, and that’s really different to our generation, is that when a song goes viral, like “Mariposa” has, hundreds of thousands of people use the audio. As of this month, 74 million views on the video on YouTube.

And all this happens, the virality happened before you guys had even done a show. How crazy! Did that feel like Monopoly money, during the pandemic? Everyone was locked in. What did that feel like?

IP: It was weird. We weren’t active on TikTok at the time, and the song was going crazy on TikTok. So we’d kind of get word of it, and then go on TikTok — specifically just to see the progress and how it’s going. But I think the biggest difference between something blowing up during the pandemic and blowing up now is that we didn’t have a chance to experience it live. That’s where the weirdness comes in.

TA: That was also cool that it happened to have its moment on TikTok, because you get to see the people use the audio. For the time, for everyone being at home, it’s kind of a gateway to see who’s using it, who’s listening to it and how they’re using the sound. It was kind of [a] cool middle ground. We don’t get to go and perform for people, but we get to see the faces of the people who are using the song. You look for the good moments in it, but we didn’t get to experience the live part of it so it was a little bit of a bummer. But we here now!

NH: That’s true! No more pandemic. Is there a certain video that stands out to you guys of people that have used the audio, of fans that have reused it? Is there any video that you saw on you’re like, “Oh, wow, this kind of hits the feels a little bit.”

TA: Honestly, there isn’t one specific one. It’s just the feeling of seeing all the people using it and dancing to it, and especially during the peak of COVID. Looking back at it, you don’t really remember how tough of a time it was. But people were very lonely and eager to get out and have fun. So getting to see people smile to our songs and dance to our songs during a time like that, just altogether felt really good.

NH: The song is, I mean, it’s very loverboy. Are you guys loverboys? Do you consider yourself?

TA: Yeah, we’re loverboys.

IP: Literally every single one of us is in a committed relationship that’s spanned for over two years, three years. Every single one of us.

NH: That’s crazy. I will say, is there a difference between loverboys and simps?

NH: What’s the difference?

IP: I feel like a simp carries a connotation that’s kind of pathetic. Like, if you’re simping over a girl, it’s not a positive thing for you and your life and it could negatively affect your progress as a human being. Whereas if you’re a loverboy, you’re just showing love to the person that you like the most. And you’re doing things, going out of your way to make them happy, while not losing track of your own progress.

NH: I feel like I need to make that a TikTok audio now!

IP: I had never thought about that ’til now, though.

the rascals tour 2022

NH: No, because when I was listening to that song, it is really beautifully written and stuff. And of course, you guys broke down the lyrics, I watched the lyric video on Genius. I love the way you guys broke down the dichotomy of the different verses, but all kinds of saying the same thing. And I was kind of wondering that, I’m like, “Yeah, what’s the difference between a simp and a loverboy?” As a group — you know, there’s a couple of you guys — was it hard to rein [in] these themes of your music? Are you guys like, “This is what we want our music to be about,” or are you like, “Whatever happens happens.”

TA: It’s honestly, “Whatever happens happens.” But I think just the chemistry and the connection we’ve had as friends — we’ve been friends for years before we even started making music together. So naturally, for the first four years of us making music, we wouldn’t even talk about lyrics. We would just play the song, and then each one of us would write our own lyrics, and then record it. Then we would just realize it all works and we’re all thinking about the same thing and feeling the same thing, just based off of the chords being played and the music being played. And then we’d just be looking at each other …

IP: And that’s cool.

TA: Like we’re all on the same page, we’re all writing about the same thing, but we didn’t talk about it at all.

IP: We’ve known each other — or I’ve known these guys, since they started writing songs. I’ve experienced them go from day one to what it’s at right now. In that, I feel like I know where they’re going when I hear the instrumental. If Dom’s making a beat, he’s producing whatever, making some chords, and then everybody’s in their own little corner writing, I could kind of gauge: He’s gonna go this way, he’s gonna go this way. I’m gonna do my s**t, and then it’s all gonna mesh together. It usually does. It’s kind of a little bit of both, of knowing what it’s going to be about, and also just letting things happen.

the rascals tour 2022

NH: Coming after … having something go viral — I feel like this is something we don’t talk about either — is there a need to make every other song go viral, too, after that? Personally, how does that weigh on you? You’re like, “Okay, this is a hit. Now we need to make another one.”

TA: I mean, in a way, every song we’ve ever made we’ve had that feeling for. Even before “Mariposa,” we thought “Mango” would be the one, or “Summa” would be the one, or “Violet” would be the one, “Plus” would be the one. Every song we release, every song we make in the studio, we feel like it has potential to have a moment as big as any other song. That’s the kind of energy we always put into our music, and that’s the goal.

But it was mainly after we started to gain some success and then we had more of labels, agents, managers coming into our ears, and that’s when that pressure and the other, the outside noises of wanting to get another hit, another “Mariposa.” That was what we heard, “You got to make another ‘Mariposa.’ Another ‘Mariposa.'” That kind of takes you out of the joy of having fun and making the best music you can possibly make every single time.

But we learned, we’re able to experience that and figure out how to filter through all the noise and just get back to what we’ve been doing from the beginning. I think that’s gonna give us the best chances of getting another “Mariposa” in terms of numbers. But every song we release, we feel like is another “Mariposa.”

NH: I love that. You said there’s labels and things like that in your ears. Does your friendship give you guys something to fall back on when you have all this outside noise? Because you guys have been friends since high school, right? That’s a while.

IP: Friendship is the number one foundation of everything we’ve ever done as a group, as a company, as a business or whatever. Because if we were to break down every single thing that we’ve been through, positive or negative — because a lot of times success could drive people apart, a lot of times bad things can drive people apart. I feel like many other groups, if they experienced what we experienced, they would have fallen off as far as friends, they would have stopped working, stopped being together. I think the friendship that we established, previous to making music as a group, is what’s held us together for this long.

NH: And Dom, how did you guys all meet? You guys all met in high school, and then someone was recruited on Twitter?

DP: This man, Jorge!

NH: I kind of love that, because it’s so random. So what happened? Was everyone in class together, or just seeing each other around high school?

DP: I had PE with Issac. And we would always team up against… I don’t know, we kind of just fell into that.

IP: We were the most athletic ones in the class.

NH: I was gonna say, were y’all track stars? Y’all were running the six-minute miles together?

IP: He was the runner, I was a hooper. Go ahead, Dom.

DP: [Tarrek and I] met in water polo, or I feel like we got closer during water polo. The first time I’ve ever experienced something like that.

IP: So romantic!

TA: I would just see him swimming around.

IP: You’re like, “That’s gonna be my guy.”

NH: I love that. Bromances are real, too, okay. Bromances are real romances. Coming on to now, you guys are doing shows. What has that been, to be on the road and to actually be with your fans, face to face?

IP: It’s amazing. It’s everything we ever hoped for. It took a while for it to happen. This is our first U.S. tour. We’re doing 19 shows in 27 days.

NH: That’s a lot.

IP: It’s a lot.

NH: It’s a lot. Are you guys going crazy a little bit?

TA: All driving.

IP: Yeah, we’re on the road.

NH: No planes?

All: No planes.

IP: We started in Seattle and we’ve been driving since. But every show, all the tiredness, all the driving, all the lack of sleep, none of that matters once it’s showtime. When we get on that stage, and there’s hundreds of people that paid their hard-earned money to come see us sing our songs …

TA: Traveled to see us.

IP: Yeah, traveled. There’s some people who drive three, four, five, six hours just to come see us. There’s no time for anything other than giving them the best show possible, and putting all of our energy into that one hour that we have with those people.

TA: It’s a pretty crazy experience. The amount of fatigue that comes with driving 10, 15, 18 hours to a show is crazy. I could be asleep the whole day and not be able to talk or give anything any energy, but once it’s showtime, it’s like the light just shines through.

NH: Come alive?

TA: Yeah.

NH: You guys do have really good reception with your fans, with fan interaction. Is that important to y’all, to be like, “I want to be close to my fans.”

DP: For sure. 100%.

IP: That’s everything. That connection lasts forever. If we’re able to establish that through a concert, we’re trying our best to do that.

TA: We had, like we talked about, “Mariposa” blew up during COVID. We were doing virtual calls and virtual shows with our fans and little chat rooms.

NH: I forgot that those happened! Oh my gosh.

TA: It’s almost surreal. Three, four years since we have been doing those, to see in person the fans that were in some of those chat rooms and video calls, it just feels like they waited a long time and it’s validating to see that they have stuck with us all this time, too.

NH: Who are you guys listening to right now? Because I’m sure, you’re on the road, there’s lots of time driving, 18 hours. There’s lots of time to listen to music. Who are you guys really feeling right now?

DP: For me, I kind of stick with the same. Kendrick Lamar , Anderson .Paak , Stevie Wonder .

NH: I mean, Kendrick’s definitely trending right now.

DP: He is! Yeah, dude. Hell yeah.

NH: I think he has the song of the summer . And it’s very Cali, that is a Cali song.

DP: Bay area, yeah.

the rascals tour 2022

NH: What about you guys, Issac and Tarrek?

TA: I also like Kendrick, I love Drake . I love …

NH: Oh, this must be a hard time for you, then.

TA: No, it’s great. It’s a great time. Good music coming out.

NH: You need something that invigorates the culture, right? The hip-hop culture sometimes.

TA: Chance is coming back with some beautiful stuff. Who else? Stevie Wonder. Dom always plays, like he said, he always plays the same stuff. Then every once in a while …

DP: ’60s, ’70s soul.

TA: And then I’ll catch the vibe and get lost in the sauce.

IP: I’ve been listening to a lot of Kendrick. Kendrick’s been a staple in my life. He’s my number one, all-time anything in the art community. I listen to a lot of Future , because Future, a lot of people don’t listen to what he’s saying. But he gets real motivational, real inspirational, real deep. You just got to listen further than the beat. And then I also love YoungBoy, NBA YoungBoy .

DP: Kanye , too.

IP: Oh, yeah, he listens to Kanye, too. So do I. Everybody does. It’s hard not to listen to Kanye. He’s one of the best of all time. But yeah, that’s who I listen to.

NH: When you guys are working on your songs — you put out a few songs lately, no pun intended. “Airplane Window,” “Lately I.” Is it hard to work on music when you guys are on the road, or do you find it easier?

DP: It’s pretty hard. Because when we planned on going on tour, we planned on bring the studio, too — which we have it. But actually getting time, finding time to actually set up the studio and record, it’s already midnight when you get to the hotel.

TA: Then you gotta leave at 5 a.m., and you gotta sleep. Even if you have time, you need to prioritize your energy for show time.

DP: You need to sleep, you need to eat good, need to workout. Yeah, it’s a lot harder than what we thought. But energy is there, though. I want to make music and I want to create, but it’s really hard.

IP: We can just build up that energy on tour, and then when we get back home, just let it all run out.

TA: We kind of set ourselves up to be ahead this year, so we already have the next few releases already ready to go. We had all the songs ready to go before even coming out on tour. So yeah, just staying ahead and working. We didn’t release a single song last year. It’s the first time since we released our first song that we went a whole year without releasing anything. We’ve just been stocking up and getting ready.

NH: I feel like fans really appreciate that, though. Sometimes when you take your time to release new music. I mean, we were dying waiting for SZA’s new album . I was dying waiting for Tems to drop the album. When you really take your time and you kind of tease your fans, I do think it ends up paying off.

Before I let you guys go get ready for the day — reading your story, what I said earlier when I started the interview, there are so many interesting things. I was reading that many of you guys in the group are children of immigrants, having this discussion of feeling the need to be the perfect child in your family. Has it been difficult, maybe living up to the standards, or maybe your parents not understanding what you do?

TA: I feel like in the beginning, because there’s something scary about going into art as your career, especially for immigrant parents who are the first to come to America to make sure you go to school and go to college and get a good job and have a good, clear safety net underneath you. In the very beginning, when I was talking about going into music — they’re always supportive of what I want to do, but the second I told them that I was thinking about dropping out of college to pursue music full-time and give it my full energy, that’s when it got a little difficult and there’s a disconnect. Because that’s one of the main reasons they came here, is for the college system to help set up the future.

But once it started going good, and the numbers started to back us up, that’s when they were like, “Alright, it’s starting to work. And it looks like you got it figured out.” Just good communication and realizing, no matter how hard or how much of a disconnect there might be on the path, they just want what’s best for you and want you to know that you’re okay. As long as you communicate that everything’s okay, and give everything your all, then it’s all good.

IP: Yeah. I mean, a huge part of the emotional part of that is — or maturing, I should say — is understanding that, at the end of the day, regardless of the frustrations, regardless of the conversation that you have with your parents, at the end of the day, they just want the best for you. Being a kid of an immigrant, of immigrants, you kind of know what they went through. It’s like, these people risked their life, they risked their freedom, just to start a new life and a new family over here. So  the pressure is warranted and the pressure is completely valid. And it’s just a matter of working hard, doing what you got to do, the same way they did for themselves, and then making them proud. That’s it.

NH: I love that. And shout out to San Jose, you guys are from San Jose. Shout out to the Bay Area .

IP: Bay Area!

TA: Warriors!

NH: When does your tour go until? How long are you guys on the road for?

IP: The 29th of June.

TA: It went by pretty fast.

NH: Tell us a little bit about “Lately I,” what was the process of bringing this song together?

DP: It started at our old house. We built another shed out there. Found this nice little drum loop, played some piano over it. Tarrek came in, laid down some nice rough vocals that sounded extremely catchy. And then from there, we kind of sat with that song for a long time.

TA: At least a year and a half. Without even listening to it once or twice.

NH: A year and a half? Did it haunt your dreams?

TA: No, sit with it as in we made it that day, we made the rough draft, and then we completely forgot about it for like a year and a half. And then a year and a half later, we were just looking through old songs and we found that one. It was funny, because I found that song in my notes, and I was listening to it maybe like an hour or two before you found it and sent it to the group chat like, “This song is pretty cool.” And I was like, “Wow, I was just listening to that, and I thought the same thing!”  Sometimes that’s how it works, and it just feels good.

NH: That’s the most guy thing I’ve ever heard in my life, honestly. Like, “We just forgot about this great song that was in there.” I mean, I’m sure you guys are gonna perform it all during your tour. Thank you for taking time off of your busy tour to come by !
