  • Trivia The Starfleet vessels seen in the first season, including the Discovery, the Shenzou and the redesigned Enterprise, were all designed by production artist John Eaves. Eaves' work with Star Trek spans three decades. Probably his most notable contribution was the design of the Enterprise-E for Star Trek: First Contact (1996) .
  • Goofs With Michael being the adoptive sister of Spock, the series has many flashbacks to their childhood and upbringing on Vulcan. Spock's Vulcan half-brother, Sybok, does not appear nor is mention during these scenes. In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) , Spock says that he and Sybok grew up together. However, since it's never stated when Sybok joined Sarek's home - only that he did so following his mother's death - or when he was exiled from the family, it's not impossible Sybok moved in after Burnham, and left before she graduated (the two extremes of the flashbacks). Also, since Sybok was never mentioned before Star Trek V, it seems reasonable the family never spoke of him again after his estrangement.

An Interview with Her Majesty Queen Grudge

The Queen talks about her new book, The Book of Grudge

Star Trek: Discovery

StarTrek.com

Author’s Personal Log:

I arrived at Federation Headquarters an hour before my scheduled meeting. Why? Because even in the 32nd century, there’s always traffic. And if there wasn’t any traffic, the possibility of a space-time anomaly, transporter malfunction, or unexpected First Contact that would, at best, make me late or at worst, send me to a different universe still exists. So, in order to not be caught in some sort of accidental transporter pattern buffer, violate the Temporal Accords more than I already had, or make Grudge wait for me, I decided to hitch an early ride with a Ni’Varian shuttle delivering President T’Rina to tea with Saru. I’m not one for tea, so I decided to spend some time in the officer’s lounge nursing a sugar-free Andorian vanilla oat milk latte. But since I knew I’d need a shot of courage, I added another shot of espresso. And a shot of Saurian Brandy. While I sipped, I scrolled through holographic email to purge my junk folder of centuries’ worth of spam until it was time.

I beamed from the lounge onto Discovery ’s bridge to find Grudge, the subject of my latest book, The Book of Grudge , napping in the captain’s chair. What follows is a transcription — to the best of my recollection — of our meeting.

Robb: Hi, Grudge.

Grudge: You? Again?

Robb: Me again!

Grudge: Haven’t I given you enough?

Robb: More than enough! But now that it is available to the public, our publisher asked me to come by and talk to you about the book.

Star Trek: Discovery: The Book of Grudge

Grudge: You mean Book?

Robb: Yes, The Book of Grudge .

Grudge: Book.

Robb: The Book of Grudge .

Grudge: Why are you saying it that way? Yes, my Book. Cleveland “Book” Booker. He’s mine.

Robb: No, no.

Grudge: Yes, yes. Tall guy from Kewjan. Deep voice.

Robb: No, no — the book we wrote. Hardcover. Ninety-six pages? Out now from Hero Collector?

Grudge: We wrote?

Robb: You wrote. I typed.

Grudge: Okay, I understand now.

Robb: Isn’t it nice that we understand each other? We don’t even need a universal translator at this point.

Grudge: Listen, if people don’t understand me, that’s their problem. But I think the book will go a long way toward helping them with very little effort on my part. Are… are you recording this?

Robb: Is that okay?

Grudge : I’d prefer you just write everything down.

Star Trek: Discovery: The Book of Grudge

Robb: Okay.

Grudge: And submit it to me for final approval. I’ve signed NDAs, you know, and cannot give anything away.

Robb: Naturally.

Grudge: It’s for your benefit, too. You wouldn’t want to be sued.

Robb: I understand.

Grudge: By… me.

Robb: What?

Grudge: Nothing. I was just stretching. Edit that out. So, you think you’re going to be a great journalist like Jake Sisko?

Robb: Hardly! I’m just doing this for StarTrek.com, so they can show the fans exactly what they’ve got to look forward to.

Grudge: This is very meta and I’m not sure I approve.

Robb: I could leave, but your fans would sure be disappointed.

Grudge: Well, if you put it that way. Fine.

Robb: Great. Sure. So, is there anyone you’d like to thank? I, for one, would like to acknowledge Dr. Culber for curing me of my cat allergy! I’m not smart enough to know what was in those hyposprays, but whatever it was it worked! Thanks, Science!

Grudge: I’d like to thank the vast majority of Discovery ’s crewmembers for leaving me alone.

Robb: Fair enough. Is there anything you’d like readers to know about you that didn’t appear in the book?

Star Trek: Discovery: The Book of Grudge

Grudge: Has the finale aired yet?

Robb: The midseason one has.

Grudge: NDA. Let’s just talk about what’s in the book.

Robb: Fair enough.

Grudge: I can’t tell you how many incoming transmissions I get from fans across the universe. Some want autographed pictures, some want me to wish their Imzadi a happy birthday, and some are just Orions looking to get a hiss out of me. But most of them just want to know what I’m thinking. About everything. Since it would have taken too much time away from my napping schedule to answer each one individually, I decided to put it all into a book. So, this book gives the people — and Andorians and Trill and sentient computers — what they want: my takes on everything from space travel to alien species to the beings who work beneath me on Discovery . And, because it’s my book, I’ve taken the opportunity to indulge in a little poetry, too. Haiku; who knew? It was exhausting work — I guess you helped a little — but I know it’s worth it. Because it’s all about me!

It was then that Grudge gave me the look I’d grown to know all too well: She was done. I waited until she deigned to let me pet her goodbye, and signaled to Linus, who had graciously offered to beam me back to the officer’s lounge at Starfleet Headquarters. I’m always in awe of Grudge. Her regal bearing, her bold sense of self, her ability to keep people at paw’s length until they’ve proven themselves trustworthy. It’s all so inspiring! And as I return to my own century, I’ll try to take some of the lessons I learned from her majesty with me. How to be confident. How to silently demand excellence from everyone. How to sit in really, really small boxes. I’ve enjoyed my time here, and with Grudge, and hope to return one day.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 2, Episode 13: Saying Goodbye, Maybe.

Season 2, Episode 13: ‘Such Sweet Sorrow’

In the penultimate episode of this “Star Trek: Discovery” season, we get fan service: a lot of it. There are gratuitous shots of the Enterprise, complete with the musical riff familiar to Trek fans of multiple generations. We spend much of the episode on what will eventually become Kirk’s ship (or will it?) instead of the Discovery. We see the colorful uniforms we grew to love in the original series (in contrast to the dark blue typical of the Discovery crew). We hear the whooshes of the sliding doors and the whistle when Pike walks on the bridge.

“She looks as good as I remember,” Pike says. Better, in fact, thanks to decades worth of production upgrades.

The Trek franchise has been in dire need of a fresher look, and this week’s episode was a distinct reminder of what a visual upgrade “Discovery” is.

I was into it, and not just because of how it looked. Previous Trek shows with tie-ins to earlier iterations sometimes struggle to keep the story their own — see the “Voyager” episode “Death Wish” involving Q. But the best ones (“Unification” in “The Next Generation”) keep the tone the show has already established while also properly integrating external elements from its forebears.

“Such Sweet Sorrow” has Burnham preparing to make a giant sacrifice. The sphere and the Discovery have merged, making it impossible to destroy, while Leland and Control are speeding to come get the data. As Spock says, “Discovery’s very existence is the problem.”

Burnham proposes using the crystal to “take the data out of this time,” meaning, “Discovery has to go to the future.” But of course, Burnham is the one who must go to the future without a certain path back to the present. Spock deduces that there is more than one Red Angel — one of them being Burnham.

A new signal appears that leads the Discovery to Xahea, to the delight of Tilly. Xahea, you might remember, was the focus of one of the “Short Trek” episodes from before the official second season of “Discovery.” The queen of Xahea, Po, is a 17-year-old who developed technology to recrystallize dilithium, which comes in handy in creating the supernova necessary to launch Burnham and the Discovery into the future.

Burnham’s crewmates, in a show of loyalty, commit to going with her into the future, suggesting that we might never see the Discovery crew again — unless the rest of the show takes place in the future. (Curiously, Pike offers to wear the suit in the first part of the episode but doesn’t offer to go later on. I was also surprised that Grayson and Sarek didn’t offer to go as well.)

The problem here is a self-created one by the “Discovery” writing team: Much of the episode features emotional goodbyes, but as we’ve seen, characters too often appear to get killed off only to return. And in this case, Spock is one of the crew who says he’ll go with Burnham to the future — and we know that this actually doesn’t happen, unless we are just wholly disregarding Trek canon.

My prediction is that Burnham doesn’t even get to make the trip because Control finds a way to disrupt the time crystal in the finale.

In terms of the Control-as-Original-Borg theory, I’m beginning to come around. I’ve said before that I don’t think this is a good idea for “Star Trek” as a whole, but let’s see if that actually happens in the season finale. Vulture’s Devon Maloney wrote a really smart piece arguing for how brilliant that idea would be, if true. I’m not sure I agree, but let’s see the execution first.

I enjoyed this week’s episode in part because of how much time we spent on the Enterprise. Some scenes made me laugh. At one point, Stamets snaps at his crew members to move quickly, emphasizing the urgency of the retrofit at hand. Seconds later, he pauses to have a personal conversation with Culber about the state of their relationship, which seems like a conversation that could’ve waited. But overall, it was a tightly focused episode, emphasizing the boldness of the writing staff.

Now, as Saru says to close the episode, “Prepare for battle.”

Michelle Yeoh's Star Trek: Discovery spin-off is now a Section 31 movie event

The Oscar winner is officially returning to Star Trek.

the queen star trek discovery

Michelle Yeoh is officially returning to Star Trek for her own spin-off, only it'll be slightly different than what fans were expecting.

In 2019, the olden days when Paramount+ was called CBS All Access, the Trek gate-keepers announced that Yeoh would be returning to the franchise for a Section 31 spin-off series focused on her Star Trek: Discovery character Philippa Georgiou. That project has been in development all this time, but it now stands as a movie event coming to Paramount+.

Philippa Georgiou led multiple lives on Star Trek: Discovery , mainly that of Starfleet captain of the Shenzhou. That version of Philippa was killed off the show, but an alternate universe version of her from the mirror dimension persisted: the emperor of the Terran Empire, who became an immediate fan favorite.

Star Trek: Section 31 will focus on Yeoh's Emperor Philippa Georgiou as she joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, while facing the sins of her past. Could a certain bald-headed golden statue have helped make this a reality?

"I'm beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I've loved for so long," the newly minted Everything Everywhere All at Once Oscar winner says in a statement. " Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched."

"To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that's shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams," she continues. "We can't wait to share what's in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!"

Olatunde Osunsanmi, a co-executive producer and director on Star Trek: Discovery , will helm Star Trek: Section 31 , which was written by Craig Sweeny ( Medium ). The project is set to start filming later this year.

"All the way back in 2017, before the first season of Star Trek: Discovery had even aired, Michelle had the idea to do a spin-off for her character, Philippa Georgiou," executive producer Alex Kurtzman says. "She broke new ground as one of the first two women on screen in the pilot to usher in a new age of Trek , and now, six years later, Star Trek: Section 31 finally arrives on the heels of her latest groundbreaking win. Everyone on Team Trek couldn't be more thrilled to have our legendary friend return home to us as we expand our storytelling into new and uncharted corners of the Trekverse. Long live Emperor Georgiou; long live Michelle Yeoh!"

Yeoh costarred with Sonequa Martin-Green on Star Trek: Discovery starting in season 1, which premiered in 2017. The show is now heading into its fifth and final season , set to debut in 2024. Star Trek: Picard , the Patrick Stewart-led offshoot, is also ending with its third season, concluding this week. However, Section 31 joins the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series in the next phase of Trek.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks were also renewed for more seasons.

Star Trek Discovery Ending Explained

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.

After five seasons, Star Trek: Discovery , the series that launched a new era of Star Trek programming on television, has come to an end with the finale “Life, Itself.” Leaning heavily on the science fiction action and prominently connecting with Star Trek elements introduced in the ‘90s, Discovery ’s fifth and final season brought the adventures of Starfleet officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) to a satisfying close. That conclusion includes a coda that was added after the creative team learned Discovery would not be renewed for a sixth season. The additional scenes were filmed to provide the finale with greater closure.

At the helm of the fifth season was Michelle Paradise, who has been an executive producer on the series since the second season and co-showrunner, with series co-creator Alex Kurtzman , since Discovery season 3. Paradise recently sat down with Den of Geek to go in full spoiler-y detail on wrapping Discovery and shares how far development on a potential sixth season had progressed before the team discovered they would not proceed with more episodes.

What Happens in the Star Trek: Discovery Series Finale

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 was largely driven by a scavenger hunt across the cosmos, with Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery following clues to recover technology from the Progenitors, a mysterious ancient race that seeded all known humanoid life in the galaxy eons ago. Unfortunately, the Discovery was not alone in this race, with the wanted criminal Moll and the Breen, a vicious alien race introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , looking to recover the technology for themselves. Racing toward the finish line in the finale, Burnham and Moll (Eve Harlow) both entered a pocket dimension where Burnham spoke with a holo program of a Progenitor, not only obtaining a data drive from them but learning that the Progenitors created life from ancient technology they discovered from another unknown race.

Ad – content continues below

In the end, Burnham not only convinced Moll to stand down but her new first officer Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) and the crew outmaneuvered the Breen warship, and though a quick analysis of the data revealed it could change all life in the galaxy, Burnham respected the Progenitors’ wishes by deciding to not share it with the Federation. Burnham’s Starfleet superior, Doctor Kovich (David Cronenberg), was understandably annoyed by this but understood and respected her reasoning. In return, Kovich revealed his real identity as Agent Daniels , a time-traveling Starfleet officer introduced in Star Trek: Enterprise .

Returning home for the coda section of the finale, the crew assembled to celebrate the wedding of Saru (Doug Jones) and Ni’Var President T’Rina (Tara Rosling) where Burnham and her paramour Cleveland “Book” Booker (David Ajala) also rekindled their romance. In an epilogue decades into the future that ties into the beloved Short Trek “Calypso,” an older Admiral Burnham sent off the Discovery and its sentient ship computer Zora (Annabelle Wallis) on an important mission. To commemorate its send-off, Zora was joined by holograms of the Discovery crew in their prime in one emotional final farewell.

Pivoting to a Series Finale After Discovery Was Canceled

Principal photography on Star Trek: Discovery season 5 wrapped in November 2022 with the initial expectation that the series would be renewed for a sixth season. However, Paramount+ and CBS Studios announced the fifth season of Discovery would be its last in March 2023, with additional scenes filmed the following month. For Paradise, this chance to wrap the story in a more satisfying way and tie up loose ends was a unique one that she and the rest of the creative team greatly appreciated.

“It’s a rare opportunity, so we remain so grateful to Paramount+ and CBS Studios for letting us do that, because it almost never happens,” Paradise says. She and Kurtzman were joined by fellow series writer Kyle Jarrow to develop a coda for the entire series, which evolved into the flash-forward of Burnham launching the Discovery for its final voyage. Paradise notes the idea of having the Discovery crew in their prime appear on the bridge for the last goodbye was something Kurtzman had in mind for a while.

“Alex pitched that scene on the bridge,” Paradise confirms. “I don’t know how long he had that in his mind, but it didn’t start this season. He’s had that in his head for I don’t know how long. It’s just so beautiful and so emotional. Getting to see everybody as they are now feels like it gives the audience an opportunity to say goodbye to all of our beloved characters.”

Paradise wanted the coda to be anchored by two characters in particular, Burnham and the Discovery itself, through the personified perspective of Zora. With Burnham as “the heart and soul” of the show, Paradise wanted to provide her with a coda that confirmed and detailed her happy ending. This extended to the closing scene on the bridge conveying to the audience that “Burnham and Book are okay, our crew is okay, and Zora and Discovery are also okay.”

Connecting to Star Trek’s Past: The Breen, the Progenitors, and Agent Daniels

The 32nd century setting of Discovery that began with the show’s third season allowed the creative team to remix familiar elements of the Star Trek mythos. For season 5, the story connected directly and prominently not only with the Breen—we finally learned what they looked like under those creepy helmets—but the Progenitors, a race only seen in a one-off sixth season episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Although both the Breen and Progenitors appearing memorably in classic Star Trek series, Paradise felt they were relatively blank canvases to fill out creatively in writing Discovery season 5.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

“All we really knew about the Breen is that they were scary bad guys that had these really interesting suits that they wore,” Paradise reflects, noting they were simply known for being visually striking adversaries in DS9 . “We didn’t know much about them but, when you invoke the name of the Breen, you shudder a little bit. Getting to bring them into the season, just the name itself tells us that these are going to be formidable bad guys for our heroes, but didn’t want to just make them bad guys. It was also an opportunity to learn more about their culture.”

The Progenitors not only gave Discovery season 5 its MacGuffin but created a greater sense of mystery and tied into the season’s deeper existential themes of belonging and meaning. Paradise explains that the dark matter anomaly crisis in season 4 was analogous with COVID, leaving the crew searching for direction, with the theme highlighted by the Progenitor mission.

“It just felt right that all of our characters would be in that place, going on those journeys in different ways, but all exploring similar things,” Paradise observes. “It felt like having the Progenitors be a piece of that really spoke to the journey that they’re all on.”

The other big connection to past Star Trek series in Discovery season 5 was the unveiling of Kovich’s identity as Agent Daniels, a Temporal agent from the 31st century who encountered Captain Jonathan Archer in the first season of Star Trek: Enterprise . Inspired by David Cronenberg’s performance as Kovich, Paradise felt he added “layers upon layers” to the character and story and wanted to pay that off in a big way with the fifth season, even before learning that Discovery would not be renewed.

“Very early on, we knew we were going to have to answer the backstory of this character and who he is and that it had to be worthy of the character himself and the way David plays him,” Paradise recalls. “A couple of our writers who are very familiar with Star Trek: Enterprise suggested Daniels and the minute they did, all of our heads exploded a little bit because it just felt like that makes sense. We knew, coming into this season, that we wanted to answer that in what, at the time, we thought was the season finale.”

Tying Up Loose Ends, Discovery Season 6, and the “Calypso” Connection

Apart from the reveal of Kovich’s true identity and background, the other major plot thread that Paradise wanted to resolve was the timeline discrepancy created by the Star Trek: Short Treks episode “Calypso.” The short episode, released before the Discovery’s time jump to the 32nd century, revealed that at some point Zora had been without a crew for nearly a millennium when the ship encountered a lost soldier in the vastness of space. Before ending the series, Paradise wanted to tie up this loose end and clearly set up the events of “Calypso.”

“We always knew we were going to have to answer in the series somehow,” Paradise explains. “Finding a way to address that within the coda in a way that would feel satisfying for people who had seen [ Star Trek: Short Treks ], but not feel distracting or confusing for people who didn’t know it. Finding a way to satisfy both sides of the audience, it felt like our audience, even if they don’t know Short Treks , they’re now familiar with the ‘Red Directive’ term.”

Even though Paradise hadn’t initially planned for Star Trek: Discovery ending with its fifth season, plans for a potential sixth season had not substantially been formed by the time she learned Discovery would not be continuing. For Paradise, the important thing was that the show got the opportunity to resolve its biggest outstanding plot thread in its final scene.

“In terms of a possible season 6 and how we would’ve mixed things up further moving forward, I can’t really answer that because we didn’t really get farther down the road,” Paradise admits. “We were in the very early stages of thinking what a season 6 might be when we found out that season 5 would be our last.”

Even if Discovery season 6 will only ever exist in our imaginations, at least we got a moment to say a proper goodbye to our beloved crew before the end.

Star Trek: Discovery is available to stream on Paramount+.

“It Was Heartbreaking”: Michelle Hurd Breaks Down Losing Star Trek: Picard Actors Between Seasons 2 & 3

8 harsh realities of rewatching band of brothers, 23 years later, i'm convinced apple tv+'s new sci-fi series is the most mind-boggling show since netflix's dark.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Finale - "The Last Generation" Star Trek: Picard season 3's finale tacitly explains why there has been no mention of the Borg in Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century. "The Last Generation" featured the final conflict between Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the Borg Queen (Alice Krige). Picard and his crew of the USS Enterprise-D dealt the Borg their final fate by rescuing Jean-Luc's son, Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). The defeat of the Borg liberated the assimilated Starfleet, which saved both Earth and the United Federation of Planets from total destruction.

The Borg have been the Federation's greatest enemies since their introduction in Star Trek: The Next Generation and they were a mortal threat throughout the late 24th century. The Borg threatened to assimilate Earth multiple times, including in Star Trek: First Contact, which introduced the Borg Queen. However, the Borg were dying in Star Trek: Picard season 3's finale as a result of being "poisoned" by Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) in Star Trek: Voyager 's finale. Assimilating Starfleet with the help of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' s rogue Changelings via Jack Crusher, who became Vox of Borg, was the Queen's last-ditch attempt to evolve the Borg and propagate her species.

This was the same Borg race that originated in the Delta Quadrant and menaced the Federation time and again in Star Trek: The Next Generation , the TNG movies, and Star Trek: Voyager . The logical implication is the Borg were wiped out by Picard and the USS Enterprise-D, thus they never made it past Star Trek: Picard 's early 25th century. This explains why the Borg have not been mentioned in Star Trek: Discovery seasons 3 and 4.

The lack of reference to the Borg in Star Trek: Discovery after Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery settled into the 32nd century implied the Borg were no longer a threat. After all, if the Borg were still around, the Federation would have been easy prey for assimilation when it was bereft of warp travel for over a century because of The Burn. Even after Captain Burnham and Discovery restored warp travel to the Federation, the Borg was never raised as one of the issues that still concerned the Alpha Quadrant. Star Trek: Picard season 3 provides a tidy answer that the evil Borg simply are no more.

Unless The Agnes Jurati Borg Exist In Star Trek: Discovery's 32nd Century

However, Star Trek: Picard introduced a second Borg faction that may still exist in Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century. A more benevolent Borg led by a hybrid Borg Queen embodied by Dr. Agnes Jurati (Allison Pill) emerged from the deleted Confederation alternate timeline and became allies of the Federation at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 2. The Jurati Borg didn't appear in Picard season 3 to help Picard save the assimilated Starfleet, but they were still presumably guarding a transwarp conduit from a mysterious enemy. It's possible Jurati's Borg faction may have survived into the 32nd century.

The fact that Agnes Jurati's Borg also haven't been mentioned in Star Trek: Discovery seasons 3 and 4 potentially indicates that something may have happened to them in the 789 years after the original Borg Collective was wiped out in Star Trek: Picard season 3. Perhaps Jurati's Borg traveled to the Delta Quadrant, or they were destroyed in the Temporal Wars. The fate of Agnes Jurati's Borg faction prior to Star Trek: Discovery season 3 is a story to be told, possibly in Picard 's proposed continuation, Star Trek: Legacy . But for now, Star Trek: Picard' s ultimate defeat of the Borg is a reasonable explanation for why they are no longer a threat to Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd-century Federation.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is available to stream on Paramount+.

So excited about this one!

I absolutely love Grudge the Cat ❤️!!! I think she’s so adorable!!! The writers wrote her just the way I imagine all cats talk about humans. I had a cat named Salem that I used to imagine was thinking all this sarcastic stuff just by looking at the expressions on her face and by her reactions to what my Mom and I would say to her.

I used to come up with some funny stuff that made my Mom burst out laughing, just like it looks like Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson have done because I couldn’t stop laughing while reading this preview 😆🤣. I cannot wait to get this comic 🖖!!!!

I am very tired of this Queen stuff. Either she’s a cat or she’s not. Just tell us. They almost got killed by the butterfly people over this stuff.

Female cats are called Queens. Males are Toms. Deal with it.

Star Trek: Discovery – The Book Of Grudge Review: Disco’s Queen Gets Her Own Profile

Review: Star Trek: Discovery – The Book of Grudge

Hero Collector continues to be one of the most creative licensing partners that Star Trek and ViacomCBS have. It’s astonishing that in spite of over a decade of their partnership the company finds inventive ways to create collectibles and literature in the realm of Star Trek— making every product feel new and worthy of adding to our ever-expanding collections. The publisher continues that trend with their latest offering: Star Trek Discovery: The Book Of Grudge .

Consider this correspondent’s cat curiosity piqued!

Admittedly, I’m not much of a cat person (sorry Grudge) but I interact with enough cat people to know they have more or less a similar idea of what cats are like. Cats seem to tolerate humans more than they like them. They basically own everything they see, and their time is much too important for the world’s trivialities. Author Robb Pearlman , the only person deemed deserving of Grudge’s time by the feline legend herself to be her interviewer, reaffirms that Grudge’s qualities are not unlike her ancestors who lord over our households today. It reads like a profile piece in which you can learn about Grudge’s thoughts on her immediate surroundings like her ship, her crewmembers, her human, and larger subjects like space travel and time. The answers are no longer than two or three sentences because her time is far too precious for long-winded essays. Readers are expected to gleam her thoughts from those few words while being awestruck by her breathtaking self captured in photos that accompany the answer.

the queen star trek discovery

Apart from photos of her and other members of the U.S.S. Discovery crew, there are illustrations by Walter Newton of Grudge in amusing poses accompanied by her own haiku poetry. It’s nice to know that Grudge doesn’t take herself too seriously and is not above being the butt of a joke to make us laugh. Just have treats ready for her though, she has definitely earned them.

The Book Of Grudge is a hardcover and measures roughly 7″x7″. It’s a light read that you can open and close with one hand, which obviously means you’re meant to read it while petting the animal of your choice. It’s nearly a hundred pages of Grudge goodness full of and she was even generous enough to spare a page or two for the credits of the book. The book is great catnip for the cat people in your life. Once you show them Grudge’s stills and her poetry, how can a cat lover, even the non-Star Trek fan, resist her charms?

the queen star trek discovery

I went into The Book of Grudge as a cat tolerator. All it took was a couple of her clever answers, a picture of her in the Captain’s chair, and one of her haikus to compel me to put the book down with Grudge in my heart. I’m going to cherish this book and cannot wait to meet Grudge in person so I can get her paw-tograph .

Now, how do we get Eaglemoss and Hero Collector to do a similar interview with Picard’s furry best friend Number One?

What ultimately happened to the USS Discovery in the 'Star Trek: Discovery' series finale?

Strangely, the Star Trek: Discovery ship's far-future fate was revealed in 2018 'Short Trek' episode 'Calypso'.

The USS Discovery from Star Trek: Discovery

What happens to Discovery at the end of season 5?

How is the uss discovery sentient.

  • What happens next?
  • What is Zora's final mission?

Over five seasons of "Star Trek: Discoverywe got to know Michael Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery, but the show's final scene is reserved for its eponymous starship. In the series finale " Life, Itself ", self-aware computer Zora fires up the spore drive for the final time to embark on one last mission.

We still have no idea why she's given a top-secret Red Directive to wait indefinitely at these particular coordinates, but a 2018 " Short Trek " episode "Calypso" has already revealed the next stage of her journey. Here's what's in store for Zora and Discovery a millennium down the line — watch out for spoilers. (And if you need a refresher on all things Trek, check out our Star Trek streaming guide for how to watch nearly every series on Paramount Plus .)

Admiral Michael Burnham in Star Trek Discovery Season 5, Episode 10

Several decades after the Discovery crew tracked down the Progenitor technology — long enough for Admiral Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker to see their son, Leto, rise to the rank of Starfleet captain — the ship is assigned one final mission.

Burnham arrives on the bridge to give the ship's sentient computer, Zora (voiced by Annabelle Wallis), her briefing. "I'm going to bring you to a set of coordinates in deep space," explains the admiral. "Then me and your crew will leave. After that, you wait."

"For what?" Zora asks, but she doesn't get a definitive answer.

"This is a Red Directive; we both know how transparent those are," replies Burnham, referring to the beyond-classified instructions that have become the mysterious Dr. Kovich's stock-in-trade. "I did hear a word in passing," the admiral adds. "'Craft'. I'm not sure if that's a person or a vessel or…"

That word will prove to be important, but as Burnham correctly predicts, she'll be long gone when Zora finds out what it means.

After this emotional farewell, Discovery is waved off by an armada of Starfleet vessels and a few bars of Alexander Courage's iconic " Star Trek " theme. Then, Zora fires up the spore drive and jumps away to her mystery destination.

An Illustration of the USS Discovery, the titular starship in Star Trek: Discovery.

Starships often come to feel like characters in their own right, but never has this been as true as it is for Discovery.

Zora is much more than some glorified Siri or Alexa substitute, thanks to Discovery's 23rd century computer merging with hundreds of thousands of years of data collected by an ancient alien Sphere. Discovery was protecting this precious information when it jumped forward to 3189.

The newly created super-computer gradually develops sentience, emotions and a personality, and decides to name herself Zora (which means "dawn" in several Alpha Quadrant languages). She's eventually recognized as a lifeform in her own right, and awarded the rank of Specialist by Starfleet.

What happens next? And what does it have to do with 'craft'?

A scene from Star Trek Short Trek

Not a lot. For around 1,000 years, Zora sits and waits at the designated coordinates, getting some "alone time" inside some kind of interstellar storm cloud. Then she runs into an escape pod with a sole occupant — a man who calls himself Craft.

This "reluctant" soldier (played by Aldis Hodge) hails from Alcor IV, and has spent the last decade at war with the V'draysh, which — based on comments from criminal boss Zareh in " Discovery" season 3 — appears to be a Pidgin word for the Federation. (This may explain why the enemy vessel Craft has commandeered contains an extensive collection of Earth cartoons from "the long ago".)

During their time together, Zora introduces Craft to tacos, the concept of Tuesday, and her favorite movie, 1957 Audrey Hepburn/Fred Astaire rom-com "Funny Face." She falls in love with the visitor, but he ultimately departs in the hope of finding his wife and son. She refuses to give him a lift home in Discovery, however, reasoning that she has to maintain position to complete her mission.

All this was revealed in 2018 "Short Trek" episode "Calypso", though back then — before season 2 had aired — we had no idea that Discovery would depart for the 32nd century, that the Sphere data would help Discovery's computer evolve into Zora, or that Burnham (then a science officer) would be promoted to captain. These days "Calypso" makes a lot more sense.

So what exactly is Zora's final mission?

Dr. Kovich, played by David Cronenberg, in Star Trek Discovery.

Beyond waiting for a long, long time, that remains unclear. But, seeing as her mission has top secret Red Directive status, it's pretty much certain that Dr Kovich — now revealed to be Temporal Agent Daniels of " Star Trek: Enterprise " fame — has a plan for Zora, and that her bumping into Craft is no accident.

But whoever she encounters next, it's sure to have major ramifications for the galaxy — and perhaps beyond. Burnham promised a "new beginning" for Zora when she eventually comes back. Who knows what that might mean…

I was on the set of Star Trek: Discovery and my character Gen Rhys had been thrust into the captain's chair, burdened with making life-and-death decisions for himself and his crew.

I can't believe this was happening to me.

It was a milestone for my character — the first time as acting captain on the Starship Discovery — but also an important moment for me as a lifelong fan of the franchise.

Sitting in that chair, I couldn't help but think of the iconic performances by Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew and Avery Brooks. The weight of their legacy was palpable, and being part of that tradition felt incredibly significant.

But my real concern wasn't the scene; it was the crisis unfolding at home.

At 3 a.m., my wife went into labour. When her contractions increased, we called our midwife at 9 a.m. Despite the unpredictability of childbirth, she assured me, based on her extensive experience, that it was OK for me to go to work. She mentioned that while it's not guaranteed, deliveries typically occur at night, offering me some peace of mind.

I was contractually obligated to go into work that day and my wife reassured me that her contractions were only uncomfortable, not painful. She insisted I go.

With a heavy heart, I asked my neighbour to watch over my wife and to call me if there was any emergency. I would come home immediately, regardless of the consequences.

When I arrived at work, my castmates greeted me with joy. The higher-ups were quickly informed and a production head came down to assure me that everything was being done to expedite my departure. The shooting schedule was rearranged so all my scenes would be filmed first. I immediately called my wife to share the news.

As I spoke with her, another production head approached, offering congratulations and reiterating the plan. But he added, "If things get too crazy at home and we haven't finished, just bail." I told him my wife felt we were still in the early phases of labour, and we should still have time. He leaned in, gave me a hug, and whispered in my ear, "Just bail."

A man takes a photo of him sitting in a hair styling chair.

All hands on deck

I was at a loss for words — studios aren't obligated to accommodate actors in such situations. I've heard terrible stories of actors unable to attend births, weddings and even funerals due to rigid shooting schedules. Yet here, amid the bustling set of a multimillion-dollar shoot, this person was giving me permission to prioritize my family. It was a heartfelt gesture that I'll never forget.

Returning to the chair, it felt like an actual "all hands on deck" moment straight out of Star Trek. Each department rallied together with precision and urgency, and I could feel their support willing me forward. Together, we navigated the challenges of the day, ensuring I could fulfill my duty as both actor and father-to-be.

After what felt like an eternity, the first assistant director called out, "That's a wrap on Patrick. He's free to leave."

I leaped out of my chair and shouted, "I'm going to have a baby!" to the applause of the cast and crew.

At this point, I had been at work for nine hours and it was 8 p.m. I rocketed out of that studio at warp speed. When I got home, my wife's contractions had reached the point where the midwife advised it was time to go to the hospital. I couldn't believe my luck. Despite the chaos of the day, I had made it just in time for the delivery.

Five hours later, as I held my newborn in my arms, I was overwhelmed with a sense of relief and profound joy. The juxtaposition of the day's events felt surreal — acting out life-and-death stakes on set only to experience the miracle of life in reality.

Patrick pictured with his baby in a sling around his front.

My child is now 20 months old. Just this weekend, I had the luxury of taking my child out for a morning stroll, pushing them for what felt like an eternity on the swings, and sitting in silence together on a park bench as I watched them slowly gobble up a muffin, basking in the absolute wonder of this little miracle. A gift. My gift.

Patrick's baby pictured from the chin down wearing a yellow Star-Trek shirt.

I am miles away from the fearful day on set and have come safely to the other side of things – just as I'm light-years from my youth when I feared becoming a parent because, in my naive mind, it meant getting trapped into something or sacrificing my career, time and energy.

But I think most parents would agree: what you gain is absolutely priceless. No longer do I find myself consumed with work or clinging desperately to career aspirations. I have reshaped my understanding of what's really important to me and my life is immensely richer for it.

The day I spent in the captain's chair on Discovery will forever be etched in my memory, not just for the professional milestone it represented but for the personal journey it paralleled. The lines between fiction and reality blurred, the weight of commanding a starship colliding with the anticipation of welcoming new life into the world.

It was a stark reminder of the beautiful, unpredictable nature of life, where our most significant moments often unfold in the most unexpected ways.

Benedict Cumberbatch Quietly Confirms His MCU Future as Doctor Strange

Stephen king's the monkey finally has a release date - but fans still have quite a while to wait, guardians of the galaxy star teases portraying ‘one specific’ dcu character.

Several pink slips were handed out to a handful of shows at Paramount+ ahead of the streamer's merge with Showtime at the end of the month. Per Deadline , it's been revealed that Paramount+ has officially canceled Star Trek: Prodigy , Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies , The Game , and Queen of the Universe . All four titles are also set to be removed from streaming by the end of the month, but some of them may potentially continue elsewhere, as the studios are planning to shop them to other streamers and networks.

Star Trek: Prodigy had notably been renewed for a second season at Paramount+, which is currently in post-production. The new episodes were expected to debut on the streamer later this year before the cancelation. Its first season had been split up into two parts, initially debuting on Paramount+ in 2021 with the second half arriving in 2022. The show is the first animated Star Trek series geared specifically for younger audiences with episodes also airing on Nickelodeon. Paramount+ says that the streamer will nevertheless continue "to be invested in growing the Star Trek franchise," touting the upcoming series Starfleet Academy and the movie event Star Trek: Section 31 . The final season of Star Trek: Discovery is also on the show, and Paramount+ will also be bringing new episodes of Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks .

Say Goodbye to the Pink Ladies at Paramount+

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies premiered in April before concluding its freshman season earlier this month. It serves as a prequel to the famous musical, detailing how the Pink Ladies were formed at Rydell High four years before Grease . Paramount Television Studios may shop the series elsewhere, but if it's not picked up, it will be a one-season run for the prequel.

The Game was a series revival of the original comedy that aired on The CW and BET. While the original series aired for three seasons, the revival would not fare so well at Paramount+. It debuted its first season in 2021 followed by a second season late last year. That will now serve as the final season, and while it's not clear if the series will be shopped elsewhere, CBS Studios reportedly will have the license to do so if they choose.

The other show to get the boot is the drag queen singing competition series Queen of the Universe . From World of Wonder ( RuPaul's Drag Race ), the series also premiered in 2021. It was given a second season which just wrapped up one day before the show was canceled.

If you want to watch previous episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy , Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies , Queen of the Universe , and The Game , you better stream them on Paramount+ now. Queen of the Universe will be removed on June 30 with the other shows expected to be pulled from the streaming platform within the coming days as well.
