Pascagoula River Audubon Center and McCoy’s Marsh Tour
Escape to an adventure at Pascagoula River Audubon Center! The center opens opportunities to learn, have fun and explore nature through their programs that seek to educate everyone who visits.
There are lots of exciting outdoor activities in store for you – swamp and river tour, bird watching, kayaking and more.
However, the highlight of my visit was definitely McCoy’s River and Marsh Tour . Captain Benny is an absolute gem and I was thrilled that he guided our tour throughout the marsh and river.
More about that in a bit, first let’s chat about what you’ll find at the Pascagoula River Audubon Center.
So Many Birds
The Pascagoula River, located in southeastern Mississippi, is an 80-mile-long river that encompasses a diversity of habitats.
And if you’re a birder, this is your paradise. More than 300 species of birds call the river their home. Birds like the Prothonotary Warblers and the Swallow-tailed Kites build their nests here.
Depending on the season, you will see migratory birds make their stop in the forest around the river. These birds find food and shelter in this area and make it their temporary home.
You’ll see a lot a birds from land, but if you head out with Captain Benny you’ll see a whole lot more.
Note: I put in some serious research to find all the best things to do along the Mississippi Coast. If you want to see what else there is to do don’t miss these Coastal Mississippi posts .
Flora and Fauna
Pascagoula River Audubon Center grow native plants in their botanical garden. The center encourages guests to also take care of plants to help birds and other animals.
Bees and butterflies get nectar from the flowers; birds and other animals get food from the plants. Aside from that, they make the environment look beautiful.
The center has a garden with 25 plus species of plants native to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Take a pleasant and relaxing walk along the center’s grounds and discover the beauty of these native plants.
Learn about the many uses of plants to people as well as to the animals.
Fun For Everyone
If you want to have native plants in your own backyard, be sure to drop by the center during their yearly two-day native plant sale! Perennial species will be displayed for sale. If you have questions about the plants, there are experts available on-site to help you out.
Don’t forget to bring a box or cart so you can easily carry your plants.
Get a close up look at a hummingbird at the Hummingbird and Nature Festival schedule in September. This is great for visitors of all ages as there will be activities for the kids and adults alike. There will also be crafts and food sold during the festival.
Explore the center by strolling along the trails, taking pictures of the bayou, and visiting the art gallery.
McCoy’s River and Swamp Tours
And one more thing you shouldn’t miss is a boat tour of Pascagoula River. McCoy’s River and Swamp Tours will cover your excitement for Pascagoula water wildlife.
Traveling through swamps and marshes, the tour will last about 2 hours. Captain Benny will entertain you with stories throughout your adventure. We made numerous stops to chat about different parts of the marsh.
It was amazing to see how the marsh changed throughout the trip.
Among the 48 contiguous states, the Pascagoula River is considered one of the very few free-flowing rivers. There is a great diversity of animals and plants in the area.
Visiting guests will have the opportunity to see varied wildlife that includes the migratory birds, American alligators and so much more.
This is definitely a trip I would take again and again and highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.
Certified by the US Coast Guard, you will feel safe and enjoy McCoy’s River and Swamp tours.
Be sure to make reservations in advance so you’re not disappointed. I have a feeling Captain Benny’s tours book up quick.
For boat tour reservations, contact Captain Benny McCoy at 228.219.4583 and for more information, the center’s phone number is: 228.475.0825

I took the kids here during Spring break while we were visiting friends and family in Mississippi. This is a fun and interesting place for people of all ages - our group spanned ages 10 to 89, and everyone enjoyed it! We bought some gator food and the kids loved feeding them. The people working in the main area were nice, knowledgable, and helpful. They have some cute T-shirts and other items in that area if you're interested. My only suggestion would be to have an employee outside supervising visitors when possible. While we were there, a young boy threw his plastic cup over the fence and one of the alligators was trying earnestly to eat it. It was kind of a sad sight to see, and certainly not good for the alligators or the environment. I definitely recommend this place, but if you go, behave yourself and ask your children to do the same.
Super entertaining and a great value! All the people were so friendly and informative. The walking tour and holding the baby gators were worth it even if you don't want to do the airboat ride but it was super fun. Our guide Tim was informative and funny!
Who knew gators like scratched behind the ears!!
Y'all this place is a MUST! A worthwhile experience. Third tries a charm. Our first attempt was 4 years ago on our first trip to gulf shores, weather was not permitting so we were not able to go on the boat, but we were able to explore the ranch. It was awesome. So many gators. Does not disappoint. Second was driving from NOLA to GS this trip, due to previous storms they were flooded, water was about 4' up from where it should be. We waited & went today. Worth the hour plus drive. The ranch is awesome, kids had a blast. Feeding the gators was very exciting. Kids loved holding lil bit the 9mo old gator. If he bites you, it's gunna hurt a lil bit. The ride was great, we didn't go very fast, it wasn't very long, but it was exactly what we were hoping for - GATORS! Plenty of them. Chum them with marshmallows. Tim was our guide, he was entertaining, professional & informative.

We had 8 people in our group and everyone had a great time. We saw PLENTY of alligators, big & small. The boat ride was great & our guide was phenominal!!! Worth the drive!
Excellent !! Great tour, beautiful place !! Joe and his lovely wife gave us a fantastic experience !! It was amazing, we'll be back !!
such nice people! We took a boat ride and did the walkthrough feeding. We went in December when it was much colder and on the boat ride we only saw 1 gater. However, the tour guide made it worth our money. Definitely recommend the feeding if going in the later months but in the summer the boat tour would be so much fun.
four years ago, I went to the same place did the same thing it was a lot of fun. They got you in the airboat swung you around nicely didn't talk a lot and we went the other day and it was just the opposite. I hated it. They talked the whole time and was stopped a lot. The guy never got very fast on the boat and definitely never swung us around. I don't know what happened to this place, but it used to be a lot of fun. I was kind of embarrassed, cause I took my sister for the first time and I had bragged to her, how fun it used to be. Tammy Rankin
Great place to learn more about gators and have a fun air boat ride! Our airboat captain Joe was friendly and offered wonderful information about the gators and the farm. Air boat ride was enjoyable and suited for all ages (over 4) Items to purchase in gift shop to take back as souvenirs but the best thing to take back are the memories of a fun experience and pictures!
See all photos from Tracie L. for Gulf Coast Gator Ranch & Tours
Excellent lots of big gators to see up close. The airboat ride was much fun. We even saw a small gator swim up to the boat!!!
This place is definitely worth going out of your way to visit. All of the staff are super friendly and the prices are extremely reasonable. You definitely want to check out the airboat swamp tour, holding a baby alligator, and feeding the alligators. All are excellent! We look forward to visiting again on our next trip!
