Check engine warning light and flashing cruise control icon

My 2015 Crosstrek has less than 1500k on it.......what the freaking hell does this warning mean? All it says in the owner's manual is to avoid driving at high speeds and get your vehicle into a Subaru dealership ASAP

Hey pal, we had that same issue on our cross country expedition with only 15k on the car and it ended up being the Oil Control Valve. Apparently they swapped them ( they made it seem like there is only 2 ) from side to side and the issue fixed its self. Over 15k miles later and its working just fine.

Had the same issue. Cel, flashing cruise control icon and awd icon came on and then disappeared two days later. Took it to the dealer... Computer error code P000b showed up... They replaced the oil control valve and bank 1 exhaust OSV...we'll see if it that works. Car only has 2500 miles..

I am having a similar issue. I have my ABS, Traction Control and Hill Assist light on (stay on) and the car will not come out of park (unless I use the manual override) and cruise is disabled. In addition, the AT OIL TEMP light flashes after driving for a while along with the Cruise indicator light. Does any one know what this issue is or how they fixed it?

This means the brake light switch needs replaced

For anyone reading my reply, I just received the Check engine warning light and flashing cruise control icon, today, my 2014 XV is at 45k now. What should I do? Its Thanksgiving holiday in Canada and Subaru is closed till Tuesday. When my XV was at 35k, engine overheated and one of the cylinder head popped. Why is this car getting so much issues.

As a guy stated earlier until you get off you wallet and pick up a code reader your just looking at idiot lights on your dash and posting that on a forum. Once you know what is causing the alarm then you can start fixing the problem.

Had check engine light (steady, not flashing) & flashing cruise control light come on yesterday. 2015 limited CVT with 26K miles. Started/stopped/started multiple times & would not go off. This afternoon started with remote start & lights still on. Got out & checked gas cap but it was tight & wouldn't have been the problem anyway since lights came on before filling up yesterday. Then I put it in reverse, lurched back a little, then died. Of course I laughed & said sh.., forgot to put key in ignition. So restarted & back to normal. Check engine & cruise lights are out. Damn I'm a good mechanic! I'll keep an eye on it.

Yesterday after loading up with groceries and starting home we got these: At Oil Temp, Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, Eyesight disabled and probably more. Called the dealer and they told us we should be good to drive it in. We did and we quickly got our groceries transferred to a loaner Desert Khaki XV and got them home. While I'm not thrilled about our three month old car giving all these warning lights, I do have to hand it to our dealer getting right on it and getting us home safely through the snow. I'll update as I'm given info.

Did this get resolved? I've got the same thing.

less than 300km! Bought brand new Crosstrek 2016 two days ago. Now Check engine =flash cruise. Tried to play with a gas cap with no luck. But after driving few dozen km it's gone. Any ideas? Thanks.

mine did the same thing, and lights dissapeared after a day. i got a p013e code from obd

Well, a lot of people seem to be reporting variations of lights coming on, some with potential solutions, and others, well... unknown. Two things comes to mind: (1) Have any of you been playing with your own OBD data readers? Some (Bluetooth) dongles have seem to triggered errors that trigger some of these lights. (2) If you're unsure, and haven't been using your own OBD dongles, I'd get it checked by a mechanic. Different combinations of lights illuminating does not always mean what the lights indicate... I've also noticed many of the posters in this thread have posted 1-2 posts on these forums, so... :welcome: Welcome to the forum!

I've had a cel light several times, every time it has been for a crank position sensor. Subaru seems to think that changing the oil is the fix.....so they change the oil every time. Still have issues now and again. Not sure what to think

mine happen @ 19200, brought to the dealership, according to them bad signal to the throttle body, need to be ordered and replace. Good thing i have the extended warranty to cover everything, plus a rental. fine with me

subaru cruise control symbol

FWIW, this is a very old thread and none of the posters have been active here in years so I don't think you'll get any replies. Let us know what the dealer says.

I had this happen to my 2016 crosstrek and the code was reading P0300, random misfire. The guy at the auto parts store recommended changing the spark plugs as a starting place. I cleared the code and the lights went out for now.

mine did the exact same, i have 2016 crosstrek 24k miles

What is orange light with an exclamation point, Subaru?

A Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) is a useful tool that can detect when tire pressure has become too low. What is the most severe warning light in a car?

It makes me feel more secure knowing that I can get warnings if something is about to go wrong, and it helps remind me when I need to check up on the health of my vehicle. Thanks, Subaru!

Right beside of the Park drive reverse neutral there is a blanking light that looks like cruise control how do I turn that off. Outside the check engine light came on at the same time I know that the cruise control may not work but is there a way to get that off thank you.

It sounds like you’re dealing with two issues: a warning light and the cruise control light.

The cruise control light: In most Subaru vehicles, the cruise control is turned on and off using buttons located on the steering wheel. If the light is flashing, it may indicate a problem with the cruise control system. The first step is to try manually turning it off with the buttons on the steering wheel.

The Check Engine light: If this light has come on at the same time as your cruise control light, there may be a more significant issue. The Check Engine light illuminates when the car’s computer detects a problem that affects the vehicle’s emissions control system. This could be something small like a loose gas cap, or something more serious like a faulty sensor or mechanical issue.

In this case, the best course of action is to take your Subaru to a dealership or a trusted mechanic who can scan the vehicle’s computer for error codes. This will help identify what’s causing the Check Engine light to illuminate and why the cruise control light might be flashing.

It’s always best to have these issues checked out sooner rather than later to prevent potential damage to your vehicle.

Sitting in my car while running so I can tell you check engine and slippery are solid but cruise blinks

It sounds like you’re experiencing multiple warning lights on your Subaru dashboard. The solid check engine light is a general warning that there could be a problem with the engine or emissions system. The slippery symbol, often depicted as a car with squiggly lines, indicates that the traction control system is engaged, possibly due to slippery road conditions.

The blinking cruise control light might be related to the check engine light, as some Subaru models will disable the cruise control when there’s an engine-related issue. It would be wise to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic or at a Subaru dealership to diagnose the exact problem. They can read the error codes stored in the car’s computer and determine the specific issue. Ignoring these warnings could lead to more serious problems down the road, so it’s best to address them as soon as possible.

2023 - Limited - Enable "conventional cruise control" - SOLVED!

"turning on" EyeSight?? My '17 has several individual buttons which turn off various EyeSight features one by one (each triggering its own yellow light) but they all default back to On when I start the car the next time. Surely yours is the same? I can invoke conventional non-adaptive cruise control by holding the following distance button depressed for several seconds. I recall the cruise control has to already be turned on - and then the dashboard symbol for cruise control changes. I haven't tried to do it with any other EyeSight defeat modes selected - perhaps that is a factor. As for your ability to judge better than EyeSight, yes, sure, but no one is able to guarantee they always will judge things better. Catching us when we have a momentary lapse in attention is what the whole system is about. I now have 100,000 miles of EyeSight driving experience (that counts my wife's, but you know what I mean) since our car was new in Fall 2016, and the system is almost never an annoyance. The beeps for sloppy lane keeping are mild and quiet, and usually deserved. The more aggressive kinds of system intervention (louder beeps, red lights flashing) have happened maybe 2 or 3 times to me in our whole ownership, and I deserved those too. 99.9% of the time I'm driving on the highway, I have adaptive cruise control engaged but I ignore it and do my own smoother judgement following traffic - but the system is there as backup if something distracts me. We have had zero "total false alarm panics", no totally wrong system interventions. We have had one (and only one) smashed bug on the windshield in exactly the wrong place, making the system "blind" without it realizing it. That made both the cruise control and the emergency braking misbehave, kind of scary, so keep your windshield clean.

subaru cruise control symbol

Why would you want to turn it off?

the main reason is if you're having fog/condensation issues that are shutting down EyeSight - or perhaps if you really want to absolutely drive X mph, and actively maneuver around cars preventing you from doing that. Often with adaptive cruise, I don't immediately notice that the car has slowed down and I missed an opportunity to change lanes.

If it's like my 2019, you tap the Cruise button to turn it on but DO NOT set a speed yet. Then press and hold the follow distance button (either one) for several seconds to turn on the conventional Cruise mode. The dash cruise indicator icon will change to indicate the switchover. See the video below.

That would be awesome if it turned off the downhill braking as well. On rolling hills that's an annoyance.

Thank you @JohnCNA for being the first to give me an answer to the problem - that sequence did the trick. And thank you Boo Boo for taking the time to provide a resource I didn't think of. Adieu

@Soob57 posted earlier… ”And before any words of derision come my way I'll have you know I spoke to the dealership's service department (they didn't know such a thing was even possible) and the salesman from which I purchased the car (he says he'd heard of something "once" but wasn't sure of how to do it. After he asked why I wanted to put eyesight in standby mode (because, I said, I can judge what's going on around me better than eyesight can). Said he'd get back to me. “ A dealership not knowing the operating characteristics of the vehicles it sells… Who could have possibly foreseen such a thing? (Sarcasm intended)

Stonewiegman said: @Driver57 , Are you experiencing a surge in the RPMs when setting the cruise control? I am and it is so weird as my husband has a '19 Forester and when setting the cruise control on his vehicle the RPMs do not surge. I am getting "normal" RPMs when NOT using the cruise, but as soon as I set the cruise the RPMs surge. For example, when driving at 55 mph, no cruise, my RPMs stay right around 1.5 RPMs. Set the cruise and the RPMs go to 2.0 RPMs. This happens on flat roads, so there is no reason to have a sustained RPM increase. Click to expand...

My apologies for the 3 day response time. I do not experience an RPM increase when setting the cruise. Are you setting the adaptive cruise control when this surge occurs? Typically, I do not use the adaptive cruise but even when I have, I don't recall an RPM surge.

Subaru Warning Lights and Color Definitions

Subaru warning lights come in a variety of colors. Each color has a different meaning and indicates another type of problem.

  • Red: A red light indicates a severe problem that needs to be addressed immediately. Pull over and turn off the engine if you see a red light. Then, call for roadside assistance or take the car to a nearby service station.
  • Amber: An amber light indicates a less severe problem that doesn’t need to be addressed immediately but should be checked out immediately. For example, an amber light may come on when the gas tank is low, or there’s an issue with the braking system.
  • Green: A green light indicates that a system works as it should. For example, many cars have a green light when the engine is turned on.
  • Blue: A blue light usually indicates an information message from the car’s computer system, such as “low oil level” or “door open.” These messages do not necessarily mean a problem, but it’s essential to pay attention to them.
  • Yellow: A yellow light generally means something needs your attention but isn’t necessarily an emergency. For example, a yellow light may come on when the windshield wipers are turned on if there’s snow or ice on the windshield.

What problems does Subaru Have?

Subaru has had a few recalls over the years, most notably for its windshield wipers and airbags. 2015 the company also recalled nearly 650,000 vehicles for a potential fuel leak. Other than that, Subaru has been relatively free of significant problems.

If you see a warning light on your Subaru, don’t panic! Each light has a specific meaning and indicates what needs to be done to fix the problem. Sometimes, the light may come on due to a simple error that can be easily fixed. However, if the light is flashing or remains on after the engine is turned off, it’s important to take your car to a certified Subaru dealer as soon as possible so they can diagnose and fix the problem.

FAQs About Subaru Warning Lights Meaning

What does the symbol on the subaru mean.

The iconic symbol of Subaru has existed for fifty-three years, originating from the merger between five Japanese companies that formed Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. As a result, one arm was dedicated to manufacturing motor vehicles and adopted the cluster of six stars as its logo. The logo has since become integral to Subaru’s identity and is instantly recognizable worldwide.

What does the orange exclamation mark mean in Subaru?

The Tire Pressure Warning Light is a valuable indicator of tire condition. It looks like an underlined exclamation point and inside parentheses, meaning that at least one of your tires has low air pressure. It should be addressed immediately because driving on tires with low pressure can lead to decreased handling and increased wear on the vehicle’s other components. Checking tire pressures regularly will keep you safe on the road and help extend your car’s life.

What is the most severe warning light in a car?

The check engine light is often the most severe and feared warning for drivers due to the potential damage, it may signal. If this warning is not taken seriously and promptly addressed by a qualified technician, your vehicle could suffer severe engine damage, such as a blown head gasket or seized engine. Taking action quickly can help prevent costly repairs in the future.

What is the malfunction indicator light on a Subaru?

The Malfunction Indicator Lamp is an essential indicator of potential issues with the emission control system. It is designed to alert the vehicle’s operator when problems must be addressed to ensure optimal performance and compliance with environmental regulations. Regular servicing and maintenance can help minimize these issues and keep the vehicle in top condition.

What did each car warning mean?

When a green or blue light is illuminated, it indicates that a system is active and functioning properly. Conversely, an orange/yellow warning light means that servicing or vehicle repair may be necessary shortly. Such warnings are typically less pressing than when a red and flashing light appears, which requires prompt attention.

What is the exclamation light on the dash of a Subaru Forester?

This vehicle has a Low Tire Pressure Warning Light that looks like an exclamation mark, enclosed in parentheses and underlined (!). While this may be routine maintenance, it should not be ignored. Service should be scheduled as soon as possible to ensure the proper operation of the vehicle and its components.

What is the most serious warning light in a car?

When the check engine light illuminates, it is essential to take action immediately. Ignoring this warning can lead to potential issues such as a blown head gasket or even a seized engine, which can cause significant damage and costly repairs. Taking the time to promptly address any problem that may have triggered the warning light will help prevent more severe injury in the long run.

X-Mode and Cruise Control Lights Flashing with solid Check Engine Light

What is the code?

subaru cruise control symbol

Reboot?

You need to scan for the CEL code. All kinds of dash lights blink when a code is set and most of the lights have nothing to do with the code itself. They are there to call your attention.

subaru cruise control symbol

Most auto parts stores will let you borrow an OBD scanner.

from the field service manual - section on the x-mode indicator: CAUTION: Note that the system performs the following controls when switching to X mode. 1. When the malfunction indicator light comes on while the engine is running, it cannot switch to X mode. 2. If there is a possible engine coolant or engine oil temperature overheat condition, it will not be possible to switch to X mode. 3. If the ignition switch is in ON position before starting engine, switching to X mode is not available. 3. PRESSING X MODE SWITCH DOES NOT CHANGE THE X MODE DISPLAY IN THE COMBINATION METER AND MODE DOES NOT SWITCH TO X MODE so the x-mode flashing is probably because the MIL is illuminated, letting you know you can't use x-mode right now. Scanning for codes will help (which you're doing today I think per another thread)

Code: P05A0 Active Grille Shutter malfunction So it is related to the deer accident the vehicle was in recently.

Just cut the grill off. Leave the mechanism in place so the car and sensor still thinks it's there.

I am a little upset about this, so I took the car in to my local Subaru dealership this morning to get the code cleared and they refused to do anything without a $100 payment up front as that is what they charge for a check engine light service. They claimed that due to the car having been in a recent accident, on 2/3/2020, that it would not be covered under warranty as the active grille shutter may have been damaged as a result of the accident. Mind you that the check engine light did not come on until 3/14/2020 and there were no issues with the car between the time of the accident and the check engine light coming on. The service advisor I spoke to stated that he has been seeing more and more vehicles have issues with the active grille shutter recently, certainly there have been several people who have reported having issues with this system even on new vehicles with less than 1000 miles. While I think it is easy to write my car's issues off as being related to the deer accident it seems less likely due to the month and 10 days between the day of the accident and check engine light without issues. Frankly what I am most frustrated with is the fact that this check engine light is causing the cruise control to be disabled. I don't care if the active grille shutter is not functioning as intended, why should it not working affect the operation of another completely unrelated feature? I am going to attempt to address this with Subaru.

see if your car insurance will cover it

Insurance will cover it, due to some unforeseen circumstances the car has not been able to undergo any repairs as of yet. For me though my gripe mainly has to do with the cruise control being disabled and the dealership refusing to clear the code without payment. I may just disconnect the battery and see what happens, I read another account on here of someone else dealing with the issue and they were able to reset (at least temporarily) the system after having disconnected their battery for an hour.

Some auto parts stores will clear codes for free. Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk

In my opinion Subaru is doing the right thing here. I think clearing a check engine light without doing any work would be a pretty big liability and the 100 fee is not out of line. Imagine if they cleared it and eyesight wasn't working properly and suddenly you got into an accident. Most check engine lights go away after a week or so as long as the problem has been resolved.

For what a scan tool costs these days I personally wouldn't waste the time for the drive to the dealer in the first place. But with my ScanGauge II always plugged in and mounted on the dash I can and have checked and reset codes driving down the road.

Excuse my ignorance, but what model years have active grill shutters? Is this also on the 2020 Outback?

subaru cruise control symbol

All Gen 5 (MY 2015-2019) Outbacks with the 2.5 engine have AGAS; 3.6 models do not. I don't know about Gen 6 models.

The Gen 6 FA24 has it. I don't know if the FB25 does.

Well after reading what some others experiencing similar problems shared on this site I decided to disconnect the battery and see what happened. Thankfully that is all it took or at least I'll keep an eye on it for now. As soon as I reconnected the battery it sounded like the active grille shutter reset itself and the check engine light turned off. Cruise control and other functions previously disabled by the check engine light resumed normal function. I apologize for my overreacting and ranting.

Thank you! I disconnected the battery and restarted the car and the warning lights are not blinking. Taking trip today and hope they stay off. Think my gas cap was lose last week but when I tightened it the lights stayed on.

This happened to me, and I couldn't clear the warning lights after several restarts. So, I took it to the dealer. Turns out the gas cap needed to be tightened. Crazy that the car can't give you a "loose gas cap" warning light.

If our cars had warning lights for everything that could go wrong there'd be no space left for the windshield!

subaru cruise control symbol

You will need a new EyeSight do-dad for $2K+. Same thing happened to me after mine was side-swiped. The EyeSight system does not like to be "jolted", says my dealer. My accident insurance paid for it.

JoeH said: On most cars, a "check engine" light means "tree-hugger alert" (gas cap may be loose). Tighten the cap, light goes out. In a Subaru with EyeSight, "check engine" comes on, EyeSight goes off, mode light flashes...BUT, it may take 2 days for the computer to figure out the gas cap is loose, and another 2 days to figure out that you tightened it. Click to expand...
I went through this nonsense twice before they finally figured out that is was not the gas cap, but the EyeSight system.. Click to expand...
Speaking of gas caps, the service rep said the correct way to close it is to give the cap 3 separate "clicks". One click may not be enough to seal it. Click to expand...

My service manager did this several times trying to diagnose issues with our 19. The procedure he used was to disconnect the negative terminal, then hold it on the positive terminal for 30 seconds. He said this was per the service manual.

I’ll give both of these a try here shortly. I’ve got a static U0284 code that persist even after letting the cable set off it an hour. The new active grill got hooked up while the battery was connected. Every Subaru shop around here is booked out two weeks for the Holiday. I’ve seen another thread where the guy just unplugged it and plugged it back in and it worked. if I could get away without pulling the front end apart I would like to. any idea if that procedure will purge a set code? when I hooked up the active grille it opened and closed and then opened again.

Another unhappy Outback customer here with this issue...what's involved with just getting rid of it and leaving the sensor behind? Praitel, I looked through the thread and didn't see if you'd replaced the unit or only plugged/unplugged. I had a local shop (non-dealer) tell me this would take $750 to fix. They said they were "a couple hours" into diagnosis before they found the issue (not sure what that entailed here...seems pretty generous). That's maybe $300 or so sunk. Then, I'm not sure how they got to $750 for a part that's $130 max, 10min to bolt on and then a 10min bumper reinstall. They apparently happened to have the part on hand while Subaru is showing it as discontinued. I called Subaru customer service but they didn't seem to know how to help. So, are Outback owners now just out of luck entirely if they want to fix the problem? Not that I do necessarily...which leads be So, I'm now thinking that I should just go the route of disconnecting it. For reference, I had previously read the codes and only got the following. I'm not sure what led the shop to the AGAS unit. "P0005(A0) Raw code: 0005A0 ECU: Engine control unit Status: Test failed (current drive cycle), Pending, Confirmed, Test failed since last DTC clear OBDII: Fuel shut-off valve - open circuit "

Well didn't I have the same issue today. It's quite cold here but Subie lumbered and then fired up. Drive to the local Canadian Tire for a new wiper blade and came back to the car after about 20mins. Car refused to start. I had full power to all the equipment inside but the car didn't want to start. I was getting all sorts of warnings. After multiple attempts I stepped out and locked the doors, then unlocked and stepped back in. I cannot remember if it then started or gave me more of the same but it did turn over. All the way home I saw the sequence of errors listed by OP. At home I turned it off then on without issue but still had the Xmode flashing ect. After about an hour I started it up to go to work and everything was back to normal. I drove for about 15mins to work and jumped out while the engine was running. Even though the temp was well warmed up and the needle was pointing down to the middle of the gauge the shutters were still shut. Not sure what to expect but it's dark and frigging cold now so tomorrow I will look into this further.

Wilbour said: I drove for about 15mins to work and jumped out while the engine was running. Even though the temp was well warmed up and the needle was pointing down to the middle of the gauge the shutters were still shut. Click to expand...

So is this odd behavior of flashing lights and warnings a sigh of shutters open, closed or just inoperable?

Well I had the U0284 Code this weekend. I ordered a replacement Active Grille Shutter assembly. Do I need to install with the battery disconnected? Is there a reset procedures?

Had this issue 2 days ago on a long road trip. The car (18 2.5 Premium) was stopped on a very good dirt road as I stepped outside to take a photo. I heard the chirping of the x-mode switch and when I drove away, I had all the symptoms described by the original poster. I was nowhere near a Subaru dealer, so I just kept driving until I reached my hotel, about 2 hours away. Went to dinner and let it sit in a driveway, slightly nose up, as it rained for a couple of hours. I also turn the parking brake on and off a couple of times. As I left and drove back to the hotel, I saw that the symptoms had stopped and everything was operating correctly. But, the only action I really took was to cycle through the parking brake. Don't know if that had any effect. Sheesh.

Subaru Outback: How To Use Cruise Control

Cruise Control is a cool way to put your Subaru Outback on autopilot, so to speak. In this setting, the vehicle can maintain speeds of 25mph or more without having to press the accelerator. However, it will not set at below 25mph. In addition, the feature disconnects when the brake is applied.

While this is a wonderful feature, be aware that cruise control can be dangerous on winding roads, in traffic, and on wet slippery, or icy roads. With that being said, here are the uncomplicated steps to set your Cruise Control.

2010 – 2023 Models

  • Press the Cruise Control icon located on the RIGHT side of the steering wheel, notated by the top arrow in the image ( CC Icon ).
  • Once you reach your cruising speed, press the S ET/ − button (Middle Bottom).
  • Cruise control is now SET, and you will see the following icon within the dashboard to inform you that it is now  Active .
  • You can now take your foot off of the accelerator and ride.
  • Press the RES/ + button to INCREASE your speed (Middle Top).
  • Press the S ET/ − button to DECREASE your speed. Both by 5 miles only at a time.

1999 – 2009

  • Locate the cruise control lever on the right side of the steering wheel.
  • Push the  lever down  to  decrease speed .
  • Push the  lever up  to  increase speed .
  • Push the  lever forward  to  set  the cruise control.
  • Push the  button  on the lever to  disable  it.

1995 – 1998 Models

  • Push  Cruise  on the left-hand side of the steering wheel.
  • Press  Set Coast  when you reach your desired speed.

Subaru Outbacks Are Equipped With Cruise Control Eyesight

  • Still using the buttons on the RIGHT side of the steering wheel.
  • With your speed still SET ,  press the TOP LEFT button to move CLOSER to the vehicle ahead.
  • Press the BOTTOM LEFT button to move FARTHER AWAY from the vehicle ahead.
  • If the vehicle ahead slows down, your Outback will as well, WITHOUT you pressing the brake.
  • If you press the brake by mistake, just press RES/ + to resume the previous speed .

Cancel Cruise Control

  • Stepping on the brake lightly will disengage the speed and will save the previous set speed.
  • Pressing the CRUISE CONTROL button will turn the system OFF .
  • A Car above a meter (On/Off) – Press to turn the system ON/OFF ; Be sure the system is OFF when not using it as if RES/ + or SET/ −   is active, you could accidentally hit either, which will cause your vehicle to enter cruise control mode automatically.
  • SET/ − (Set/Coast) -Used to set or decrease your desired speed.
  • RES/ + – To maintain the desired speed or to accelerate the set speed. To increase the speed, press this button.

You are now ALL SET!

**NOTE: If you are unable to activate this feature on the first try, REPEAT the steps. If you are still unsuccessful, contact the dealership for assistance or consult your vehicle user’s manual.

I would like to be able to increase or decrease 1 mile per hour at a time. Is this possible with the increase or decrease button? Please advise.

I’m told by Subaru you can decrease using the buttons. I however can only increase and decrease by 5 mph. I’m told if you hit the decrease button fast it will change by 1 mph, but I can’t do it. Subaru told me its working correctly. This is on an outback with Eyesite. On my 2017 forester I can decrease and increase by 1 mph.

Does cruise control in the Subaru 2018 Outback stay engaged when it stops the car as the car in front slows and stops? Will it resume control as that car moves on? ?

You have to press the gas pedal to reactive when the car in front moves again.

Why is Subaru Cruise Control Light Flashing on My Car Dashboard?

Driving can be fun, but long-distance driving can be fatiguing as you keep pressing the gas pedal to keep the car going at your desired speed. Thankfully, cars now feature cruise control — a system that lets drivers set a desired speed and relaxes their feet when traveling a long journey.

You can activate the system by pressing the cruise control button and the vehicle will keep you at the current speed. So you don’t have to depress the gas pedal to keep the car running. Cars with advanced cruise control systems use sensors at the front bumper to detect vehicles ahead of them and keep the car at a distance to prevent collision.

Like other system components, the cruise control does have issues. And these issues are common with Subaru cars. Most Subaru owners complain of Subaru cruise control light flashing on the dashboard as they drive.

subaru outback check engine light flashing cruise control traction control

Why does my Subaru cruise control light keep flashing?

The most common reason why the cruise control light is flashing on your Subaru is due to an electrical or mechanical problem. Remember, when the light is flashing, the cruise control system is disabled, so don’t try to turn it on because it won’t work.

In some other cases, the cruise control light may be flashing due to a defective or loose gas cap, a blown fuse for the cruise control, a failing brake pedal switch, or a defective vehicle speed sensor. Let’s have an in-depth look to see how these issues could cause cruise control light flashing on Subaru Outback and other Subaru models.

Blown fuses

The cruise control system consists of several electrical systems protected by a fuse. The fuse can blow up if there’s an electrical power issue, preventing the key components from failing. If that happens, it will disable the cruise control system. In some cases, the car computer will start flashing the cruise control light on the dashboard to notify you that there’s an underlying issue that needs urgent attention.

If you suspect the fuse is blown, replace it and see if that fixes the cruise control system and clear the blinking light on the dashboard.  If that resolves the problem but the fuse blows in no time and the light starts blinking again, you have other electrical issues. Contact your mechanic for a thorough diagnosis.

Defective speed sensor

The vehicle speed sensor is one of the essential components of the cruise control system. When you activate the cruise control, the onboard computer collects information from the speed sensor to know when to increase and decrease the engine speed.

The vehicle speed sensor is mounted at the tail end of your transmission, and if it malfunctions, the cruise control light will start blinking on the dashboard. The speed sensor is needed to ensure that the speedometer and the odometer work correctly, and without it, the cruise control system will be affected.

If you notice the cruise control light flashing and check engine light is on, check the vehicle speed sensor. A bad speed sensor triggers the check engine light and disables the cruise control system. This sensor cannot be repaired. So, if it is the root cause, the only solution is to replace it with a new one.

Loose gas cap

Believe it or not, the gas cap plays a crucial role in your vehicle’s overall functionality. The gas cap can affect the performance of the cruise control system. For instance, in Subarus, a loose gas cap can cause the cruise control light to blink as you drive. It can also trigger the check engine light to pop on the dashboard. So, a loose gas cap can cause the Subaru Forester check engine light with flashing cruise control to pop on the dashboard.

Faulty mechanical component

If you own an older Subaru car, the cruise control light could be flashing due to a faulty mechanical component. In older models, the cruise control system has a cable, connecting the throttle to an air actuator, which regulates the cable to keep the vehicle at the set speed settings.

If any of the mechanical components go bad, it can disable the system and trigger the blinking light on the dashboard.

Malfunctioning brake pedal switch

Under perfect conditions, the brake lights shine as you depress the brake pedal. There’s a component attached to the brake pedal — the brake pedal switch, which tells the brake lights to light up as you depress the pedal.

If the switch goes bad, the brake lights won’t know when you step on the brake pedal. But aside from this, a bad brake pedal switch can also affect the cruise control system.

When you activate the cruise control system, the system will deactivate and switch to manual mode whenever you step on the brake pedal. If the switch malfunctions, it may send wrong signals to the cruise control system, telling it the brake pedal is always depressed, preventing the cruise control system from turning on.

System malfunction

If your Subaru check engine light is flashing along with the cruise control light and the brake pedal switch, fuses, and vehicle speed sensors are good, you have a problem somewhere in the cruise control system.

To determine the root cause of the malfunction, you need a mechanic to diagnose the vehicle. The mechanic will inspect all cruise control components and may plug in a scan tool to pull out all the error codes in the vehicle.

It’s okay for the cruise control light to be on when you activate it, but if the light comes on when you are not using the cruise control, or the light starts blinking when you activate it, there’s a problem that needs to be addressed. In most cases, a flashing cruise control light on Subaru is accompanied by the engine warning light.

What to do if your Subaru cruise control light flashing?

Whenever the Subrau cruise control light starts flashing on the dashboard, the cruise control has malfunctioned or disabled. Hence, do not turn on the cruise control system. If the light starts flashing after getting gas, locate a safe spot and pull over. Check the gas cap and re-tighten it. It could be you did not secure the gas cap properly.

If that do not solve the problem, drive straight to your mechanic and have them diagnose and fix the problem.

Does the cruise control stop working when check engine light is on?

If the onboard computer detects a problem with your transmission or the engine, it will display the check engine light and disable certain vehicle functions, like the cruise control system, to prevent further damage until you address the issue.

Let’s be clear here; this does not mean that the PCM must disable the cruise control whenever it detects an issue with the engine or transmission. It will only disable the system if the issue is causing unstable engine performance.

Subaru Outback check engine light flashing, cruise control, and traction control light blinking can all come up due to engine performance issues. Contact your mechanic to proffer solutions to the problem.

Final Words

To be precise, the flashing Subaru cruise control light shows there is a mechanical or electrical problem in your car. The cruise control light should be green and steady when you turn on the system. But if the light is flashing, turn off the cruise control until you address the problem.

If you are a DIYer, you can fix the issue yourself. But if you are not, contact your mechanic or dealership. The solution can be easy, quick, and quite affordable.

Cruise control light blinking

  • Add to quote

So, I have my cruise control light blinking on and off without any other issues or check engine light going off to help me navigate the problem and I have no idea what it might be. I did hit a pretty bad pit hole today but the cruise control light only started to blink a few hours after hitting it. I know that the module won’t work if the light is blinking so obviously I can’t use my cruise control but it’s really annoying to see it blink. It comes on a minute or two after I start the car up. Does anyone know where I should start looking for diagnosing this. My car is a 2017 Subaru Wrx 6speed and is modified with an intake, Jpipe from the downpipe, highflow cats, EBCS and EGR/TGV delete with a protune produce 295hp/ 320tq

Oh wow, I was not even aware that the cruise control module can actually throw and store codes. That’s really good to know, I’ll be sure to buy that special OBD2 cord and scan the cruise control system with that software to see the code that my cruise control is throwing.

Travel Tips to Kabardino-Balkaria: More than Mt. Elbrus!

If you’ve traveled to the North Caucasus before, there is a good chance you’ve already been to Kabardino-Balkaria, and you didn’t even know it!  Kabardino-Balkaria lies in the center of the North Caucasus region, is home to Mt. Elbrus, but more than that is a treasure chest of travel possibilities.  Here is our guide to traveling through the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, or 9 travel tips to this beautiful land:

1. How do I get there?

Kabardino-Balkaria hosts a large number of both foreign and Russian travelers every year, and has an improving infrastructure able to handle the incoming masses.  Let’s start with the obvious.  You might be a mountain climber or skier coming to enjoy the slopes of Mt. Elbrus.  That means you’re likely arriving on an airplane to Russia.  Here are your travel options:

A. Plane – We advise you fly into the Mineralni Vodi (MRV) airport in the Stavropol Region, which is about 45 minutes from the border of Kabardino-Balkaria.  MRV is the largest airport in the North Caucasus, and has daily direct flights to and from all 3 airpots in Moscow (SVO, DME, and VKO), direct flights from St. Petersburg, and several international flight routes as well, including from Istanbul, Dubai, Greece, Tel Aviv, and Bishkek.  The MRV airport has a growing infrastructure and is the most obvious choice to fly into if going to Elbrus.  From MRV, it’s a 2 hr. drive to Nalchik, and a 3.5 hr. drive to Mt. Elbrus.

That being said, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, Nalchik (NAL), also has a small regional airport with a daily flight to/from Moscow as well as weekly flights to Istanbul. As is to be expected in most smaller, regional airports around Russia, the service standard at a small airport like this will be minimal.  As a result, we recommend you flying in and out of MRV if able.  It’s a 2 hr. drive to Elbrus from Nalchik.  You can also fly into other regional airports which are 2 hrs. from Nalchik, such as OGZ in North Ossetia (Vladikavkaz) or IGT in Ingushetia (Magas).

B.  Car/Public Transport – If you have a car, are using a taxi, or are hitch-hiking your way to Kabardino-Balkaria, the region is accessible by a variety of roads and vehicles.  A major Russian federal highway E50 runs through Pyatigorsk into Kabardino-Balkaria, and can take you towards Mt. Elbrus, Nalchik, and deeper into the North Caucasus.  There are daily mini-buses, or “marshrutkas”, that travel to Nalchik from Pyatigorsk, Vladikavkaz, Grozny, and Magas, if you’re coming from a neighboring republic.  From the main Nalchik bus station, there is a marshrutka that goes to Terskol (i.e. Mt. Elbrus) daily around 12:30 pm; for that matter,  marshrutkas run daily into every valley of this beautiful republic.  For the seasoned international traveler, you can drive from the country of Georgia up the famed “Georgian Military Highway” through the heart of the Caucasus Mountains, cross the border into Russia at the “Verkhni Lars” border stop, and be in Nalchik in about 2.5 hours as well.

Anyone traveling on their own should download the “Yandex” taxi app, which is Russia’s version of Uber, and has a very user-friendly app with affordable prices.  In smaller villages/towns where Yandex’s service doesn’t reach, just ask a local and they’ll direct you to a friend or relative who can taxi you where you need to go!

C.  Train – Kabardino-Balkaria is also very accessible by the famous cross-country Russian train system if that’s your preferred method of travel.  Almost all trains to the North Caucasus pass through Mineralni Vodi in the Stavropol region to the north, so make sure wherever you are coming from, Mineralni Vodi is one of the stops.  Despite Nalchik having a train station, the city is about 45 minutes from the main railway route that runs diagonal through the North Caucasus, and as a result it’s a bit convoluted to get a train directly to Nalchik.  That being said, the town Prokhladni is a regular stop on trains going to/coming from Baku, Makhachkala, Grozny, Nazran, and Vladikavkaz, so you can always hop off there and find your way by public transport or taxi.

2.  What are the best places to stay?

This list could get exhaustive, fast. 🙂  Let’s first look at an overview of the republic’s geography, followed by hotel recommendations:

A. Nalchik – This is the capital city of Kabardino-Balkaria, with a population of around 250,000.  Nalchik is growing and new, modern hotels are being built regularly.  Here are some of our recommendations:

-Modern and comfortable:  Azimut , Butik Otel

-Budget with less frills:  Hotel Rossia , Korona

You could comfortably spend a week in Nalchik, while doing day trips into Kabardino-Balkaria’s beautiful mountain valleys.

B.  Baksan Valley – This is the most traveled road in Kabardino-Balkaria, the road to Mt. Elbrus.  If you have questions about its safety because of travel warnings, please see our detailed blog here of the drive to erase any doubts or fears.  Needless to say, because of the draw of Mt. Elbrus, there are a huge variety of lodging options at the end of this valley, from 4-star to mid-range to budget to hostel.  Here are just a few we’ll recommend from our experience:

-Modern and comfortable 4-star-ish:  Azau Star , Kristall 139

-Budget with less frills 3-star-ish:   Laguna , Povorot

If you’re a mountain climber with your sites set on the summit of Elbrus, you’ll have to spend at least 3-4 nights at Elbrus’s famous base camp at 13,000 feet.  The “barrel huts” are not easy to book directly with, and we highly recommend you do your climb (and hence, have your bookings handled) through a trusted climbing company.  Here are two shelters at base camp we recommend:

-Modern and comfortable:  Leaprus

-Budget with less frills:  Heart of Elbrus Lodge

If you’re interested in climbing Mt. Elbrus and staying in these barrel huts, click  here  to see our climbing itineraries, pricing, and group dates.

C.  Chegem Valley – Chegem Valley is the adjacent valley to Elbrus’s Baksan Valley, and is famous for its beautiful waterfalls as well as being Russia’s top paragliding location.  The “ Paradrome ” has modest accommodations for those wanting to get to know this beautiful valley for a longer period of time.

subaru cruise control symbol

D.  Upper Balkaria, or Cherek Valley – This is another beautiful mountain gorge not too far from Nalchik.  There is an authentic lodging complex in Upper Balkaria called Tau-El, with amazing local food for meals as well.

E.  Border Zone lodging – Several of Kabardino-Balkaria’s mountain gorges run into the border zone with neighboring country Georgia, i.e. an area that foreigners cannot enter without a special permit from the local government (often taking 2 months to receive).  There is a famous mountaineering lodge in Bezengi Valley, where several generations of Russian mountain climbers have honed their craft in the Caucasus Mountains.  Perpendicular to Baksan Valley (about 25 minutes from the base of Mt. Elbrus) is Adyr-Suu Valley, where there is a lodge for back-country skiers to stay, while trying their hands (and feet!) on the untouched snow of that valley.  Both these valleys require border permits for foreigners, but are possible to access for the more adventurous!

3.  Top cities to visit?

Most locals would agree that Nalchik is the main city of significance to visit in Kabardino-Balkaria, but let’s be honest, even more would say, “Just go to the mountains!”  Tirnauz is the capital of the Elbrus district, and is an interesting town to spend some time in, with its unique location in the mountains and place in Soviet history as a once-booming mining town.  The main thing to consider in visiting Nalchik and other cities in the lowlands, is the chance to experience Kabardian culture and food.  Whereas the deeper you go into the valleys, the more you’ll encounter Balkar culture and food.

4.  Best local foods to try?

There are 3 types of food that come to mind, when spending time in Kabardino-Balkaria:

A. Khychiny – This is one of the staple national dishes of the Balkar people, and what you’ll inevitably be served if guests of local Balkars.  It’s a thin buttery flat bread, sometimes cooked with fillings of cottage cheese, fresh greens, or potatoes.  It is often slathered in butter, but wow is that some tasty greasy goodness! 🙂

subaru cruise control symbol

B.  Shashlik – Shashlik is a MUST for any visit anywhere in the North Caucasus!  Most people would agree that it’s the national food of the entire region.  Shashlik is meat shish kabobs; while pork and turkey can be found in some parts of the Caucasus, lamb or chicken are the preferred shashlik meats of choice in Kabardino-Balkaria.

C.  Soup – No matter where you are in Russia, you’re sure to find a local soup that people love.  Kabardino-Balkaria is no different.  Especially in the winter months in the mountain valleys, there’s nothing better than to come inside from the cold weather and warm your body up to a bowl of hearty Caucasus soup.  Whether Georgian kharcho or local Balkar lakhman, make sure to try your hand at one of these soups with a side of fresh baked bread/lavash!

5.  Top Hole-In-The-Wall restaurants:

Of course, for a republic of this size, we’re bound to leave at least a few great local joints off our list, but here are a few to get you started. ***Note:  Restaurants in the North Caucasus are much better known for their food than their service, so prepare for tasty food, but manage your expectations about service:

-Elbrus – Kogutai Restaurant at Mt. Cheget – While this isn’t a hole-in-the-wall restaurant per se, it’s one of many to choose from in the Cheget tourist village, and we have found them to provide consistently good food and service.  Kogutai has a nice interior, and maybe most important, an English-language menu with good pictures. 🙂  There also is a nice outdoor patio with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.

-Nalchik #1 – Tameris Restaurant – This is a cafe with a relaxed atmosphere in the capital Nalchik.  Local tour company Elbrus Elevation has taken foreign groups there on multiple occasions and always had good experiences.  Address is ul. Kuliyeva 3.

-Nalchik #2 – Cafe-Bar Oasis – You have to know where this restaurant is to find it, but once inside, you won’t regret it!  There is a unique cafeteria-style ordering process, that includes several dishes being cooked on the spot once ordered.  You can sample local Kabardian dishes here.  The seating area is very modern and a pleasant atmosphere to have a meal in.  Address is ul. Kuliyeva 2.

-Upper Balkaria – Tau-El Restaurant – This is the restaurant part of the Tau-El Tourist Complex in Upper Balkaria.  Whether spending the night or just passing through, make sure to stop here for a meal!

6.  Must-See Sites

This republic is so chock full of “must-see” destinations, it’s impossible to narrow the list down.  Here are just a few suggestions to get you started: (***Mt. Elbrus is a no-brainer and we’re assuming that’s on your list)

A. El-Tyubu and Paradrome – This is an amazing area towards the end of Chegem Valley.  Many tourists visit the famous Chegem Waterfalls and don’t drive any further down this gorge, which really is a shame.  El-Tyubu is a picturesque Balkar village with several historical sites to see, including some ancient mausoleums.  The real gem of the area, though, is the Paradrome , which is Russia’s premier paragliding destination.  The combination of the scenic surrounding mountains and constant winds produces almost daily conditions to sail through the beautiful Caucasus sky.  Highly recommend!

subaru cruise control symbol

B.  Upper Balkaria – Also known as Cherek Valley, the entire drive to the actual village of Upper Balkaria is one big destination.  First, you can spend time at the 3 consecutive “ Blue Lakes ”, one of which is one of Russia’s deepest lakes with an underground spring.  Then, the drive itself becomes an adventure, as you pass by steep rock walls with a huge drop-off on the other side.  If you’re able to walk this part of the road, that is a bonus!  Once you’ve made your way through the valley walls, the region opens up into a beautiful panoramic view.  Many years ago, there were multiple villages in this region, but they’ve since been condensed into one main village.  You can see some of the ancient Balkar towers that their ancestors used to live in as well.

C.  Djili-Suu – Although hard to pronounce and not easy to get to, Djili-Suu is one of those places in the North Caucasus that people rave about that you “have to” visit.  It’s actually on the North side of Mt. Elbrus, and more accessible from the Mineral Waters region (2 hrs. from Kislovodsk).  The base camp for Elbrus climbers summiting the mountain from the North side is at Djili-Suu.  This area is famous in Russia for its numerous natural healing springs, as well as unique climate conditions that make for beneficial, long holidays for seeking a respite from their daily grind.  There are wide swaths of land available for camping, with probably the most unrivaled views of Mt. Elbrus in the North Caucasus.  Make sure to check this out!

7.  Off-the-beaten path destinations

subaru cruise control symbol

A. King’s Waterfalls (Tsarskie), or Gedmisht – Probably the valley in Kabardino-Balkaria with the least amount of hype is the Malka Valley, which is the northernmost valley and mainly runs through the Kabardian lowlands.  At the point where the villages end, though (Khabas), the asphalt turns into dirt and the hills start to rise, culminating with the incredible King’s Waterfalls, or as one friend put it, Avatar Waterfalls.  These stunning waterfalls are best visited in the early summer, when everything is lush green and the water flow is strong, with many streams of water flowing down the earth’s surface.  The different colors are incredible and it’s hard to look away.  Once you’ve enjoyed the waterfalls, enjoy a meal of shashlik at one of the nearby lunch huts.  Having an off-road vehicle is ideal to visit these falls, but worth the time and effort!

B.  One-seater chair lift at Elbrus – As the infrastructure at Mt. Elbrus has modernized, some of the more “authentic” experiences have gone to the way-side.  This is one experience still available, though!  From the 2nd (11,000 ft.) to 3rd level (12,500 ft.) of Mt. Elbrus (whether skiing, going to base camp, or just touring), there is a single-seater chair lift for 100 rubles each way (less than $2).  This is an amazing experience if you have the time.  It’s 8-10 minutes each way, and a surreal experience of the majestic Caucasus mountain range surrounding you, skiers silently passing you by underneath, and in general enjoying the silent expanse of nature all around.  The chair lifts are from the Soviet times and so it feels like something from a different era.  For mountain climbers, the newer group cable car gives better access to most of base camp, but several huts are pretty close to this chair lift, so it still may be a good option for you.

C.  Abandoned Mines above Tirnauz – Tirnauz is about 1 hr. from Mt. Elbrus, and a town everyone drives through to and from the mountain.  Although today it looks old and half-abandoned, it was a booming mining town in the 20th century.  About a 45-minute drive above the city with an off-road vehicle, you can see the remains of the mining operations.  Learning about this history combined with the breath-taking views of the Baksan Valley and even into Georgia, you’ll wonder why more people aren’t visiting this place.  This is a great spot to see eagles soaring in the sky, as well as admire the Soviet city plan of Tirnauz from above.

8.  What do I need border zone passes to visit?

In Russia, any area within 5-10 km of a neighboring country, without a clearly delineated border (i.e. in the mountains) is considered a special border zone, and patrolled by Russian border guards.  This area IS accessible to all Russian citizens with their passports, but is NOT legally accessible to foreign citizens UNLESS you have a special permit from the FSB (Federal Security Bureau).  These permits are accessible, either through a tour operator or local friend, but require you to submit your application 45-60 days in advance.

Areas in Kabardino-Balkaria that are worth a visit if you have a border zone pass:

A.  Bezengi Wall – This is at the end of the Bezengi Valley, and holds a place of lore among Russian mountain climbers.  Many mountain guides go through training in this valley.  Five of the Caucasus Mountain’ range’s highest seven peaks are a part of the Bezengi Wall, so you can imagine the draw it has for climbers. There are great areas for trekking and camping in this area.

B.  Adyr-Suu Gorge – This remote valley runs perpendicular to Baksan Valley and is about 25 minutes from the base of Mt. Elbrus.  It’s marked at the entrance by a relic of the past, a car lift from Soviet days that auto-cranks your car (and you) about 50 meters up the mountain.  After 45-60 minutes of driving on gravel road, the gorge opens up into a flat valley with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.  The Adyr-Suu Alpine Lodge is at the end of this valley and where back-country skiers base out of during the acclimatization phase of their Mt. Elbrus ski tours.  This is truly a place where you can experience untouched powder!

subaru cruise control symbol

C.  Mt. Cheget (Elbrus) – Cheget is a neighboring mountain to Mt. Elbrus and where many climbers will acclimatize, both at its base and while doing some hikes.  It also is famous in Russia for its free-ride terrain for more experienced skiers.  Standard access to the chair lifts and mountain are available to all (i.e. mountain climbers don’t need to worry about accidentally crossing into the zone), but anyone wanting to summit the peak of Cheget OR visit the beautiful Cheget Lake needs a border permit.

subaru cruise control symbol

Foreigners violating the border zone areas is considered a serious offense in Russia; make sure to do your due diligence if wanting to visit one of these areas!  We highly recommend using a local tour operator and always traveling with a local person if visiting one of these areas.

9.  Any cultural “do’s” or “don’t’s” to be aware of

subaru cruise control symbol

Kabardino-Balkaria is a fascinating republic with a combination of traditional and modern society.  The more you interact with local people, the more you’ll see a mixture of Muslim faith, post-Soviet mentality, and ancient local traditions all wrapped together.

Kabardians mainly live in the lowlands (Nalchik, Baksan, and lowland villages), while Balkars primarily live in the mountain valleys (Elbrus, Chegem, Upper Balkaria, etc.).  There is a large population of Russians in the region as well.  Foreigners visit every area of the region regularly, and so local people are used to and will welcome your presence.

Come with an open mind to learn about these peoples, their traditions, and their land.  You won’t regret your trip to Kabardino-Balkaria!
