In Corning, NY and Steuben County, the temps can get up to 2300°F! At least, they can at The Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG), home to the largest collection of glass art and historical glass in the world. Swing down through the Southern Finger Lakes and you can catch glass-blowing and breaking demonstrations all day long. Explore over 3,500 years of glass history at CMOG or participate in a Make-Your-Own Glass class and take a treasure home for yourself.

Steuben County is known best for its rolling hills, sprawling vineyards, glistening water, and for having the “coolest small town in America,” Hammondsport, NY. There is something for everyone here – wine tasting, boutique shopping, farm-fresh foods, award-winning breweries, scenic drives, and some of the best sweet and savory bites you’ll ever have the chance to enjoy.

Learn about the origin of naval aviation at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum or the rich history of boating at the Finger Lakes Boating Museum. Stroll through Corning’s famed downtown, the Historic Gaffer District, and find beautiful architecture and stunning design. Roam the Wild West at the Rockwell Museum, the finest collection of western art east of the Mississippi. Or simply ride down rural country roads and see where the path may take you.

Weekend Getaway

Have you ever wanted to hop in the car and get away for a weekend? To go somewhere that feels far removed from city life, yet is teeming with opportunity for exploration? Welcome to Steuben County, New York! Located in south western New York State, surrounded by 4 Finger Lakes and 7 state parks—it’s the perfect haven for people of all ages seeking their next adventure. From its charming small towns, unique waterfalls, local wineries and craft breweries, walking paths winding through its gorges, homey bed & breakfasts offering stunning views of sunrises over lakeside coves…the list goes on!

Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape or a family-friendly destination where there are endless outdoor activities – Steuben County has something special to offer everyone. So come step back in time and explore this truly remarkable corner of the world; let us introduce you to our little slice of paradise…Steuben County!

One area of Steuben county not to be missed is Downtown Corning.

The Gaffer District in Downtown Corning is a picturesque section of town named for the glass smiths that put Corning on the map. This downtown area is filled with walkable, picture-perfect streetscapes, small businesses, arts and culture and delicious opportunities to explore.

We were obsessed with the elaborate window displays and the most delicious scones at Laurabelle’s Bakery , we loved the cozy ambience and delicious lattes at Soul Full Cup Coffee House   and the homemade ice cream at Dippity Do Dahs …In between snacks, we recommend popping into our favorite Corning boutique, Heathered Gray where we stocked up on gifts and souvenirs from our visit.

Corning Museum of Glass

Have you ever seen something so beautiful that it took your breath away? That’s what you can expect at the Corning Museum of Glass . This world-renowned museum is home to the largest collection of glass art in the world, including pieces from some of history’s most famous artists.

We loved the live glass blowing demonstration for nerding out about the actual process and the interactive exhibits that bring you into the quirky science and unique history of all things glass! Whether you’re a glass enthusiast, a fan of Blown Away on Netflix or just looking for a fun day exploring on your own or out with your family, the Corning Museum of Glass is definitely worth your visit!

Where to Eat

Hand + foot.

If you ask locals for their recommendations, Hand + Foot comes up again and again! This one of a kind bar and restaurant takes pride in sourcing their food and beverages from local craft and micro suppliers and transforming ingredients into craveable and beautiful dishes.

Known in town for their unique and stunning cocktails and fun takes on fresh food, this community hub serves up so much more than a delicious lunch..but if you’re looking for a delicious lunch, we highly recommend you start here.

Nickel’s Pit BBQ

Also located in Downtown Corning is the 2nd location of Nickel’s Pit BBQ . With a flagship spot in Watkins Glen, the Finger Lakes region can’t get enough of the rock and roll vibes and local farm to table meats that Nickel’s Pitt is serving up!

With so many options we opted to share one of their signature platters so we could try ALL of the meats! The wings with their perfect texture and smoky flavor were a sure favorite but everything from the brisket to beers was made in NY perfection.

Where to Stay

Hilton garden inn.

The Hilton Garden Inn is the perfect landing place for groups of friends, families and travelers of all kinds. With gathering places throughout the hotel for groups to get together, plot and plan, we love the cozy atmosphere and the killer location. You can walk out of the front lobby and be in the heart of downtown with a quick and scenic walk across the pedestrian bridge.

Hammondsport NY

Another Steuben County destination is found on Keuka Lake in the small but mighty town of Hammondsport. Located at the Southern tip of the Lake We love the storybook setting that the scenic backdrop provides to this charming and historic area filled with shops, dining and wineries.

Glenn H. Curtiss Museum

This hidden wonder in upstate New York will take you on a journey through time. History buffs will tell you that although Aviation was born in North Carolina it grew up and went wild here in Hammondsport NY. Named for Hammondsport’s own aviation and motorcycling pioneer, the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum is an adventure in exploration for curious souls of all ages. In this Motorcycle and Aviation museum you’ll get to see some of the most impressive aircrafts and motor vehicles from the earliest days of transportation all the way up to modern times. Celebrating the innovation and evolution in transportation and the rich and storied history of invention, this museum is a treasure trove of life-sized artifacts and exhibits all collected under one roof for you to explore!

We LOVE learning about the roots and histories of modern day life and found so much nostalgia and fun.  If you’re looking for a unique travel destination, a fun place to explore indoors or just want to learn more about the history of travel and transport, this museum is definitely worth checking out.

Timberstone Grill

After exploring the lake and town square, we recommend you pop into Timberstone Grill for the cozy and inviting atmosphere and delicious regional cuisine. With a warm, natural and inviting space, this is the kind of place that makes you want to come in and stay a while- Craft cocktails, local beers and wines and a delicious farm to table menu make that easy to do! We loved the local tomatoes and creamy mozzarella, the brisket mac and cheese and a burger that requires a few extra napkins!

Finger Lakes Region

We’ve had so much fun and experienced so much wonder exploring upstate NY this season. From the Seneca Wine Trail to the surrounding small towns with BIG flavor, the Finger Lakes and Upstate New York regions offer so much to travelers and wonderstruck wanderers! 6 Must-Do Adventures in New York’s Southern Finger Lakes Region

Verdant rolling hills, shimmering waters, and a lively culture make New York’s Southern Finger Lakes the perfect adventure destination.

Soak up the sun while lounging on the shores of Keuka Lake , spend an afternoon sampling craft beverages, or get out in nature—you really can’t go wrong when it comes to how you spend your time here.

Known for its sprawling vineyards and wishbone-shaped lake, Explore Steuben is the perfect summertime playground for water sports, fishing, biking, hiking, and so much more. Start exploring with this list of the most iconic outdoor adventures and things to do in the region. (Don’t be surprised if you find a new summer tradition!)

1. Get on the Water at Keuka Lake

Almost endless opportunities abound on the clear, cool waters of Keuka Lake. Rent a motorboat and cruise the 22 miles of undulating shoreline or get the family out on water skis, boogie boards, or in a tube.

For a more hands-on experience, kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards are all widely available for rent .

2. Cast a Line in the Chemung, Cohocton, or Tioga

The fish are jumping and the waters are flowing year round for both experienced and novice anglers alike on the Chemung, Cohocton, and Tioga rivers. More than 30,000 stock trout are released into area waters, helping create some of the best fishing in the northeast.

The Chemung and Tioga Rivers are known for their muskie fishing, but the jewel of Steuben County fishing is the Cohocton River, which is home to both wild and stocked trout. A nice stretch of the waterway where you can drop a line is off State Route 415 and Wentworth Road, where there is a special angler footpath for river access.

3. Cycle Through the Countryside

The Southern Finger Lakes region features excellent cycling, with well-maintained roads and scenic views.

Breathe in the crisp air as you explore the lush, vine-covered hills while biking through the Southern Finger Lakes region. Of course, a couple of winery stops and a picnic along the way is always a popular option, but for a real heart-pumping adventure, try the Hammondsport Circle Tour. This 36-mile route takes you through some of the most breathtaking scenery in Steuben County.

If riding for a cause is appealing, sign up for the  Tour de Keuka , an annual charity bike ride around the lake region in July that benefits the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. There are several scenic routes and distances to choose from including 16-, 45-, 60-, or 100-mile rides.

4. Chase Waterfalls at Stony Brook State Park

Take a hike through Stony Brook State Park for some of the prettiest views in the region.

Stony Brook State Park  in Dansville is a go-to destination for waterfall lovers, and three moderately challenging  trails  are the best way to explore the park.

The Gorge Trail is the easiest, following Stony Brook as it winds past picturesque rock formations and three waterfalls, ending at a stream-fed pool at the North Entrance. Wear brightly-colored clothes during your visit to attract the grey petaltail dragonfly, often seen landing on arms and hats.

5. Tour the Craft Beverage Scene

It’s well-known that the Finger Lakes region produces great wine, period. But the area also has a thriving—and growing—craft brewing and distillery scene. With almost 30 brewers to choose from, you’re sure to find a beer, cider, vodka, gin, or whiskey to suit even the most discerning palate.

Four Fights Distilling in Corning is Steuben County’s oldest distillery and produces small-batch vodka, gin, bourbon, and a variety of specialty products, including the intriguingly named Imperial Apple Pie.

With eight craft breweries, five distilleries, and New York State’s most awarded farm cidery, you can tour and sip some of the most innovative craft brews and spirits on the East Coast.

6. Explore the Finger Lakes Trail System

A true labor of love, the  Finger Lakes Trail  system was born in the 1960s and has grown to almost 580 miles of trails winding their way across the Finger Lakes Region. (When you consider neighboring trails off the FLT, the total system reaches close to 950 miles.) About 70 miles of the trail twists across Steuben County, with the expanding network growing thanks to a dedicated band of volunteer helping to create and maintain trails. You’ll find multiple access points for getting onto the trail, including many hikes starting at most of the area state parks.

The trail system is perfect for day hikes or weekend-long adventures, and highlights include crashing waterfalls, treks through vineyards, a wide range of diverse habitat and ecosystems. The well-maintained and marked trails make access easy—the biggest decision will be where to start!

One of the more unique places is the Huckleberry Bog Nature Trail on the Bristol Hills Branch Loop near Hammondsport, which is great for families and anyone interested in the history of the area.
