Star Trek Timelines: The Best Crew Recommendations for F2P Players

Perhaps the best measure of your strength in Star Trek Timelines is your crew. Although you might be tempted to think that ships are more important in this strategy game, it’s actually the characters you obtain and upgrade that allow you to discover new content in PvE and defeat others in PvP.

The good news is that, even as an F2P player , you still have access to top tier crew that can be used to complete challenges and missions, as well as earn more resources. You just have to be smart about it because, remember, you only have 100 crew slots to work with.

An Overview of Cadet Challenges

One of the best ways to get ahead in Star Trek Timelines is to complete a Cadet Challenge every day. You have 6 attempts to do so per challenge, but you need a specific combination of characters to excel and reap the maximum rewards.

So far, there are 5 different challenges as follows:

A Certain Formality

Only common and uncommon crew with the Female trait can participate.

Adv: A Certain Formality

Only rare crew with the Female trait can participate.

Ex Astris Scientia

Only common and uncommon crew with the Starfleet trait can participate, regardless of gender.

The United Federation

Only common and uncommon crew who are Alien (non-Human) can participate, regardless of gender.

Adv: The United Federation

Only rare crew who are Alien or part Alien can participate, regardless of gender.

Overall, those characters who are Alien or part Alien, as well as Female are preferable for the purpose of completing Cadet Challenges. The Starfleet trait is a welcome plus, but quite rare in this combination.

The Best Uncommon Crew

As an F2P player, these crew members will do most of the heavy lifting for you, especially during the early- and mid-game. As such, you should aim to collect and upgrade the following characters for each skill:

Ensign Ro has a great command stat when maxed and is also an Alien, Female, Starfleet. Alternatively, you can combine Ensign Sito Jaxa (the best choice here) with Nurse Paris for most medical challenges and missions.

Lt. Tasha Yar is your best choice is terms of the Security stat, but she is obviously not an Alien. As such, you’ll likely have to pair her up for most challenges and either Security Chief Worf or his son, KDF Alexander, are good options.

Unfortunately, there are no strong crew members in Diplomacy that are also Female, Alien, and Starfleet. Nevertheless, a combination between Dabo Girl Leeta and Enterprise-D Captain Picard will do for most diplomacy challenges.

Engineering

Either Ensign Seska or Lt. Naomi Wildman have a decent Engineering stat, as well as all the prerequisite traits for Cadet Challenges. You can choose either one (or both) for your crew, but you might find it easier to gear the former.

Lt. Jadzia Dax is the easiest character to obtain that fits the profile here. Better, but rarer options include Ensign Pazlar and Festive Jadzia.

Play Star Trek Timelines on BlueStacks!

CMO Crusher is relatively easy to obtain and has a decent Medical stat, but she is not an Alien, so she must be accompanied by one. Ideally, you’d want to go for Nurse Kes, but, if you’re worried that she might take too long to immortalize, you can also use Dr. Phlox, which is slightly less attractive, but much cheaper to upgrade.

The Best Rare Crew

These four female crew members are absolute keepers because they are everything you need to successfully deal with advanced Cadet Challenges. Certainly, they can be a pain to obtain, but, once you have them, you should do your best to rank (use Honorable Citations), train, and gear them.

Sniper Ezri Dax + Dr. Selar

Ezri Dax has great stats for both Medical and Security missions and challenges. Because she is not a Nurse or Physician, though, you will sometimes have to couple her with one. Our recommendation is Dr. Selar because she’s also pretty good in Gauntlet rounds.

A fantastic Alien, Female, and Starfleet crew member, Lt. Saavik also has amazing stats for Command and Science challenges. If you ever find her, don’t let her go for anything in the world.

Vedek Winn Adami/Lwaxana Troi

Both of these ladies are fantastic for Command and Diplomacy challenges, but they can be difficult to obtain and upgrade. A third option is Senator Cretak, but her other traits are incomparable to those of Adami or Troi, so she might be less useful in campaign missions overall.

Maquis Takeover Torres

Phenomenal in Engineering and weekend challenges, this version of Torres is also not too difficult to obtain. You’ll be able to obtain one copy of her during Episode 2 on the Galaxy Map, so make sure you side with the Maquis on this one. You might not agree to their philosophy, but, roleplay aside, you really don’t want to miss on Torres over some galactic squabbles.

Once you have most or all of these Uncommon and Rare crew members, you’re ready to tackle most missions and all Cadet Challenges. Soon enough, you’ll be able to use your newly gained resources to find even better characters, which, of course, you will also need to prioritize for the sake of limited slots. If it ever becomes a problem, our recommendations for super rare crew include EV Suit Tucker, Augment Riker, Vic Fontaine DIP, Phlox SEC, Subcommander T’Rul ENG, and, of course, Ambassador Sarek.

If you already own the skeleton crew to successfully complete all Cadet Challenges, though, you no longer have to hold yourself to such a strict standard in terms of character choices. You can choose these super rares or you can use others. Like with ships, at this point, it’s more about enjoying yourself than min-maxing… unless, of course, you’re a big fan of min-maxing. SPECIAL CREW

Some crew you just can’t get in the time portal, from beholds, or even event packs. The following characters are available only by voyage rewards, gauntlet rewards or by fusing multiple others. Fierce Guinan is now available as an achievement award and Colonel Worf reportedly shows up in time portal packs now and then.

Dr. Simon van Gelder :  Probably very rare. Ranked #3 Medical Skill Base Maximum, #5 Medical Skill Average Roll, #9 Medical Skill Maximum Roll. Added March 12, 2024.

23.08.09- For the Dilemmas: Where Earth Meets Sky, The Cost of Living, Ladders and Chains, Blood-Red Tide, and The Buried Years – you now have a 1% chance to get a behold with Admiral Black or Vori Defender Chakotay (or a Random Legendary). There is also a 10% chance of a Super-Rare behold, and an 84% chance of a Ransom Super Rare.

For the Dilemmas: The Voice of the Prophets, A Higher Duty Part 3, A Life Alone Part 2, Champion of the People Part 3, Interference Part 2, and Off The Books Part 2 – when selecting the correct option (see above) you’ll get a behold featuring that Crew plus 2 other Super Rare Crew.

For the Dilemmas: First Author, The Tools at Hand, Friends in Need, and Burden of Proof –  you’ll get a behold featuring D’Kora Krayton and 2 other Legendary ships (now only at 500 schematics instead of 600).

Fusion Crew

So how to you max out The Duras Sisters? Just do what you did above three more times. Fuse all your 1/4* The Duras Sisters together for a Super Rare 4/4* THE DURAS SISTERS! Or you can get The Duras Sisters if you are super lucky at the Dabo Wheel.

So how to you max out Tuvix? You are going to need three more pairs of Ambassador Neelix + Security Chief Tuvok to make three more 1/4* Tuvix. You don’t have to level up Neelix or Tuvok at all, but one of them has to be 3/3* and the other 1/3* in order to fuse them. Fuse all your 1/4* Tuvix together for a Super Rare 4/4* TUVIX!

So how to you max out Evolved Janeway? You are going to need three more pairs of Captain Janeway + Mutated Paris to make four more 1/5* Evolved Janeway. You don’t have to level up Captain Janeway or Mutated Paris at all, but one of them has to be 4/4* and the other 1/4* in order to fuse them. Fuse all your 1/5* Evolved Janeway together for a Legendary 5/5* EVOLVED JANEWAY!

So how to you max out One Zero Zero One? You are going to need three more pairs of One Zero + Zero One to make four more 1/5* One Zero Zero One. You don’t have to level up One Zero or Zero One at all, but one of them has to be 4/4* and the other 1/4* in order to fuse them. Fuse all your 1/5* One Zero Zero One together for a Legendary 5/5* ONE ZERO ZERO ONE!

So how to you max out Indulgent Seven? You are going to need three more pairs of Indulgent Seven + Mobile Doctor to make four more 1/5* Indulgent Seven. You don’t have to level up Indulgent Seven or Mobile Doctor at all, but one of them has to be 4/4* and the other 1/5* in order to fuse them.

Fuse all your 1/5* Indulgent Seven together for a Legendary 5/5* INDULGENT SEVEN!

Considering the complexity of this character fusion, you may want to simply use Honorable Citations to make a 5/5* Indulgent Seven because it would be easier.

So how to you max out Reunion Spock and Kirk? You are going to need three more pairs of Anxious Kirk + Fal-tor-pan Spock to make four more 1/5* Reunion Spock and Kirk. You don’t have to level up Anxious Kirk or Fal-tor-pan Spock at all, but one of them has to be 4/4* and the other 1/5* in order to fuse them.

Fuse all your 1/5* Reunion Spock and Kirk together for a Legendary 5/5* REUNION SPOCK AND KIRK!

Considering the complexity of this character fusion, you may want to simply use Honorable Citations to make a 5/5* Reunion Spock and Kirk because it would be easier.

Gauntlet Rewards

LOCUTUS OF BORG : Strong in Diplomacy, Security / 7 traits

BARTENDER GUINAN : Strong in Diplomacy, Medical / 7 traits

THE CARETAKER : Strong in Engineering, Science / 7 traits

ARMUS : Strong in Science, Command / 5 traits. No longer on the Gauntlet HOT List. Replaced by Power Ransom.

THE RED ANGEL : Strong in Engineering, Science / 8 traits

BALOK : Strong in Command, Diplomacy / 7 traits

TRIBBLED KOLOTH AND KORAX : Strong in Security, Command / 7 traits

FIRST FLIGHT ARCHER : Strong in Command/Engineering / 9 traits

MIRROR MARINER : Strong in Diplomacy/Command / 8 traits. Mirror Mariner doesn’t even show up on the Gauntlet HOT List (but Admiral Black does). Seems like they have things backwards.

POWER RANSOM : Strong in Command/Science / 8 traits.

Omet’iklan : Strong in Security/Engineering / 10 traits. This is the first new Gauntlet Crew since July 2023, which I think is more reasonable. Mirror Mariner and Power Ransom were 3 months apart, and Mirror Mariner and First Flight Archer were only 2 months apart. That being said, it took me a year to get First Flight Archer and I have not seen Mirror Mariner or Power Ransom yet. I play every day as a considerably strong Captain, so what’s up with that. I guess we’ll see if I magically get Mirror Mariner in March of 2024. *** Close… April 12th, 2024.

I am not entirely sure if you can acquire these crew anywhere else, but I’ll tell you this: I have multiples of each, all from The Gauntlet… EXCEPT… I have no Locutus of Borg and he was discontinued from The Gauntlet before I started playing, so… *April 8, 2020 : I got an email from a Captain named James. He says that he has pulled a Locutus of Borg as a Gauntlet Reward, so there’s hope!

* * April 24, 2020 : GhuruDude  sent me an email that Locutus is the reward for completing 20K Gauntlet rounds. I have done the Gauntlet pretty much every day for over 2 1/2 years at this point, and I am no where near 20K. That might because I personally find the Gauntlet almost as annoying as the Arena, but at least it’s not required to complete your daily tasks.

***December 20, 2021 : it took over 4 years, but I finally got a Locutus in the Gauntlet – which is awesome, because it would take me like 7 years to get 20,000 rounds.

***December 13, 2023 : I am currently at 19,600. It will indeed take almost 7 years to get there.

STARGAZER PICARD : Common Honor Hall Crew

KAHLESS THE UNFORGETTABLE : Strong in Command / 7 traits

Original Honor Hall Legendary Crew. 100,000 honor.

CAPTAIN BEVERLY PICARD : Strong in Medical, Command / 5 traits

Once upon a time, you could purchase Captain Beverly Picard in the Honor Hall, much like Kahless the Unforgettable – but not for long. She is absolutely the most powerful in the combined Command/Medical skill for The Gauntlet. I don’t know if you can still acquire her at all, but I haven’t seen her since. She is available for 100,000 honor.

*Jan 10, 2020 – I got an email from a Captain named Mike and he says that Captain Beverly is still in his Honor Hall. I hope that’s true for everyone that doesn’t have her yet. – ek

*Feb 20, 2020 – an email from Captain James confirms that Captain Beverly is still in the Honor Hall. Why DB removed her once I bought her (and not Kahless), I have no idea.

NANOPROBE PHLOX : Strong in Engineering, Medical / 6 traits

Added August 4th, 2020 in the Honor Hall for 100,000 honor.

CAPTAIN TRIBBLE : Strong in Command (the strongest at time of release) / 6 traits

BORG QUEEN SEVEN : Strong in Command, Engineering (but not as strong as Assimilated La Forge or EV Suit Picard in the Gauntlet) / 7 traits

Build & Change Ship Swap your active starship using this screen. You can also see how many ship schematics you own and how many are required to build a new starship. Acquire starship schematics via the Time Portal, Faction Centers, and by completing Away Missions and Starship Battles.

Friends You can add or remove in-game friends and contacts via the Friends panel.

Fleets Fleets are groups of fellow players that you can join up with. For now, Fleets are a place for you to chat about the game. As we continue to develop new features for STAR TREK TIMELINES, Fleets will become an essential and important part of playing.

Messages When you need to read messages from Disruptor Beam, such as communications with Customer Support, you'll find them under messages.

Video (iOS 9 Only) Press this button to activate built-in screen recording on any iOS 9 device, and save some of your most impressive moments while playing STAR TREK TIMELINES.

Settings Adjust basic game settings via the Settings panel, such as game audio volume and your Disruptor Beam account login.

Contact Support Get in touch with Disruptor Beam's dedicated support team using the Contact Support panel.

Whenever an important piece of game info is available, a circle icon appears on the right side of your screen.

Sometimes there will be a character, like Captain Picard, who wants to speak with you. Tapping the icon brings up a dialog box with that character.

Tap the Galaxy Map icon to switch to a view of the galaxy, various missions, and the current story Episode. (When in Galaxy Map view, tap the same icon to return to a view of your ship – called "System View".)

Two-finger pinching and pulling gestures will zoom your galaxy map in or out. You can drag and tap around the galaxy map to explore star systems and points of interest like space stations and planetary bodies. You can also explore each story Episode on the galaxy map.

This screen gives you access to the Guardian of Forever, a living time portal capable of sending and receiving any person or object through space and time.

Use the Time Portal to acquire new crew, equipment, and even schematics to build starships. You can also spin the Dabo Wheel for a random chance at equipment, starship schematics, and more. Check the Time Portal regularly, as you can find daily and weekly offers plus deals on ships, items, characters.

A Faction represents one of the various political organizations, empires, federations, and groups from the galaxy and across all different universes. For example, the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance exists alongside the United Federation of Planets, the Terran Empire of the "Mirror, Mirror" universe, and the Cardassian Union.

With all of the different factions, it's no surprise many of them have frequent ideological and political disputes. As you become involved with various Factions through Episode storylines, you'll need to decide which sides to favor. Furthermore, each side will provide unique rewards upon reaching the maximum level of influence with them.

The Scan function of your starship allows for occasional daily scans to collect free salvage, which are items that can be used to progress your game in various ways. Rewards may include Faction Mission tokens and additional credits.

In STAR TREK TIMELINES, you assemble a dream team from Star Trek, including the original series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. As a Captain, you'll direct the action and choose crewmembers to tackle any given dangerous or tense situation.

As a roleplaying game, STAR TREK TIMELINES features characters with Skills [1], Levels [2], and Equipment [3]. However, your crew also have stats like Star Rating [4], Details [5], and level-cap advancement [6].

Star Rating [4] reflects the rarity of a particular crew member in STAR TREK TIMELINES, and roughly equates to their ultimate skill potential. More stars means overall higher skills, like Enterprise-D Picard's skills in Command, Diplomacy, and Science.

Each crew member has four Equipment [3] slots. Giving your crew the appropriate Equipment will raise their Skills [1] and capabilities in both Away Missions and Starship Battles. Once all four equipment slots are full, a crew can be Advanced [6], which raises their level-cap and opens up four new equipment slots. By improving crew equipment, you're able to increase their stats and overcome even more difficult challenges.

Your Daily Missions reset once per day, and include currency and item rewards for simply playing STAR TREK TIMELINES. They're also a good way to jump around game activities during quick play sessions.

You can chat with other players, send private messages, or talk with your fleet from anywhere in the game. Making new friends and talking with other players is a great way to earn more rewards and even learn some tips and tricks.

You can choose your name and portrait at an early Captain level. A small number of portraits are available to begin. It's possible to earn a crew member's portrait as your own Captain portrait by leveling-up that crew member.

Captain Experience & Levels Gain Captain experience and rise in levels to unlock new game features. You’ll unlock new game features like additional Captain portraits, access to Fleets (player guilds), and additional battle stations for your starships.

New Crew & Equipment To get new crew and equipment, you can buy and spend dilithium as well as earn and spend credits. Almost everything in STAR TREK TIMELINES can be earned by spending credits on crew and item packs, but dilithium packs have a better chance of dropping rare items, crew, and starships schematics. Captains earn credits by completing conflicts, fighting in ship battles and completing shuttle missions.

In addition, special "themed" packs have higher chances of dropping specific types of items — for instance, a Klingon or Romulan crew and item pack.

You can also complete Episodes to earn new crew and equipment. If you conclude an Episode in favor of a particular faction, you can recruit a crew member associated with that faction, like Worf (Klingon) or Bones (Federation).

• Green (Uncommon): 2-star maximum
• Blue (Rare): 3-star maximum
• Purple (Super Rare): 4-star maximum
• Gold (Legendary): 5-star maximum

Crew Advancement & Item Rarity Just like crew, items also have rarity. An item’s rarity is expressed by the number of stars on the item’s bottom border. For example, look at Picard’s favorite variety of tea, Earl Grey:

Each new crew member joins your starship with one star, at level one, and with an starting level-cap of 10. So where does item rarity come in? Let’s take a look at Enterprise-D Picard.

Advancing crew, like Enterprise-D Picard, requires all four items, which are consumed when the crew is advanced:

At each level of advancement, Enterprise-D Picard will either need a more rare Earl Grey tea or even a new item altogether. This is true of any crew in STAR TREK TIMELINES, and so you’ll often have several Earl Grey teas or Type 2 Phasers in your inventory.

Many of the most common items in the game are combined to make rarer items as well, which is another reason you’ll sometimes earn (or even want) several duplicate items. It can take quite a combinations of items to make a 3- or 5-star Earl Grey.

Starship Battles are real-time conflicts between two starships and their respective crew. Before each battle, as Captain, you assign battle stations from your pool of crew. Each crew, when placed in a battle station, is able to temporarily increase the tactical capabilities of your starship. Currently, this is represented by three core stats: Damage, Accuracy, and Evasion.

To be victorious, Captains must choose the right crew for each respective battle, and that can change depending on whether you're battling a Borg Cube or a Klingon Bird of Prey. Sometimes, your starship may need more damage for the heavily armored starships. And other times you may require incredible accuracy to hit more nimble vessels.

Winning a Starship Battle earns you Captain and Crew experience, including credits to spend on upgrading crew or purchasing packs from the Time Portal.

Each Away Mission and Starship Battle also has three difficulty levels: Normal, Elite, and Epic. Each difficulty will increase both your challenge and rewards, and can only be unlocked by achieving 3-stars on the previous difficulty. You can earn 3-stars on Away Missions by earning all Rare Rewards. And to earn 3-stars on Starship Battles, you typically must win without losing shields or by defeating your opponent with a specific amount of time.

New Starships Looking for a new starship? Captains need the appropriate number of schematics unique to constructing each starship. Each vessel will have a required total number of schematics, varied by the ship's rarity and overall battle power. Schematics can be obtained in item packs at the Time Portal, and also by completing various missions from Episodes.

Each crew member can have up to 3 skills from the six areas of expertise: Science, Diplomacy, Engineering, Command, Medical, and Security. As Captain, you must assign three crew members to overcome each Away Mission's skill challenge nodes [1] and successfully complete your mission.

Structurally, an Away Mission is like a branching storyline where each challenge node [1] is both a decision and barrier your crew must overcome:

As you build your Away Team, any skills they posses that are required for the chosen Away Mission will cause any corresponding nodes [1] to be highlighted gold.

Each challenge node [1] has an associated skill (Diplomacy, Science, etc.) By default, crew with higher skill values will increase your chances at success. However, each sequential challenge will wear down a crew member, reducing their effectiveness in subsequent challenges until they rest one turn.

If you fail the challenge on any node other than the final one, it will cause your final skill challenge to be more difficult. Overall success or failure on an Away Mission is determined at the final challenge, so try to save your best officers for the final challenge.

Every Away Mission has a selection of Suggested Traits [2]. Each crew member has their own unique collection of Traits reflecting their personality and background. These include racial associations (e.g. the Klingon Trait) as well as Traits associated with particular jobs like Pilot or Astrophysicist, and even attitudes like Innovator.

Traits provide boosts on certain nodes [1], typically ones with Rare Rewards as noted by the star symbol [3] below a node. For a chance at earning a Rare Reward, your crew must have a high enough skill to achieve a critical success on the node. Once you've earned a Rare Reward the star symbol will disappear, noting the reward has been acquired.

Aside from Rare Rewards, completing Away Missions can earn you credits, experience, equipment, and training items. Moreover, earning all of the Rare Rewards available on a specific Away Mission will result in an award of 3 stars. As you progress through STAR TREK TIMELINES it will only become more important to balance the progression of your crew with the growing challenges of each new Episode, whether it's Starship Battles or Away Missions.

Upon winning an Away Mission you'll often receive equipment for your crew, Captain and crew experience, Training Programs to further level-up your crew, and credits. Other rewards can include Starship Schematics and Transmissions to complete faction missions, which themselves can give the above items.

There are three difficulty levels for Away Missions: Normal, Elite, and Epic. Each level presents higher skill node challenges and also better rewards. To unlock Elite and Epic difficulties, replay an Away Mission to unlock all Rare Rewards.

Warp 1 & Warp 10 Once you’ve earned 3-stars on an Away Mission or Starship Battle, you can return to them in the Episode screen via the Galaxy Map and use the Warp 1 and Warp 10 buttons. You can also use the Crew Management screen to tap on any empty and unlocked item slots for a list of away missions, starship battles, and faction missions that give said item as a reward.

Warp 1 will instantly play through a 3-star Away Mission or Starship Battle one time, as if you had successfully played through it. Warping costs chronitons, but in exchange you will acquire Captain experience, items, and credits. Warping will not earn your crew members any experience points, however.

Warp 10 is similar to Warp 1, except it automatically plays through the Away Mission or Starship Battle ten times successfully in the background. Be careful, however, as Warp 10 also costs 10x the amount of chronitons that Warp 1 does.

Star Trek Timelines ’ v4.0 client update is here, and it’s Apple’s Game of the Day this week. As part of 4.0, the game’s designers are excited to announce a brand new feature, Cryostasis Collections, major upgrades to the Crew Quarters where you keep all of your favorite Star Trek characters, and full support for the iPhone X.

Cryostasis Collections

Work on Collections containing your favorite characters, such as the Vulcan-centric “Live Long and Prosper” and Borg-theme “Resistance is Futile” collections to unlock the in-game bonuses most valuable to you.

Crew Quarters Upgrades

Changes to the Crew Quarters in the v4.0 update:

• A new sorting option is available: use the "Immortalized" sorting option
• The Vault can now be accessed from within the Crew Management screen via a dedicated icon
• A Time Portal icon has been added to the Crew Quarters to allow players to quickly jump to the in-game store.
• Crew that can be added to the Cryostasis Vault will now display a "Freeze" icon

Star Trek: Prodigy has seen its young group of aspiring Starfleet cadets embark on some fantastic adventures, but when does the show take place within the Star Trek timeline? Following Dal R'El (Brett Gray) and his ragtag group of friends aboard the experimental USS Protostar, Prodigy is the first Star Trek series created specifically for a younger audience. Still, the show has plenty for adult fans to love, as it builds on previous Star Trek series, particularly Star Trek: Voyager, and has many connections to the greater Star Trek universe.

After escaping the Tars Lamora prison colony, Dal and his friends steal the USS Protostar and embark on a series of adventures, aided by a hologram of Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). The kids eventually set out for Starfleet, hoping they can become true cadets, as the real Admiral Janeway pursues the Protostar. At the end of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 , Admiral Janeway recruits Dal and his friends as Warrant Officers, and they set off to find the original crew of the Protostar, including Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran).

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 joins season 1's episodes on Netflix in summer 2024 so that all 40 episodes will be available on the streamer.

When Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Takes Place In Star Trek’s Timeline

With time travel involved, prodigy's timeline can be a bit confusing..

The main storyline of Star Trek: Prodigy begins in 2383, five years after the USS Voyager returned from the Delta Quadrant in Star Trek: Voyager's series finale. Triumphantly back Alpha Quadrant, Janeway was quickly promoted to Vice Admiral and attended the launching ceremony of the USS Protostar. Under the command of Captain Chakotay , Janeway's dear friend and former First Officer, the Protostar then set off for the Delta Quadrant to clean up any messes left by Voyager's interference in the unexplored area of space.

For reference, Star Trek: Lower Decks takes place in 2381, and Star Trek: Picard begins in 2399.

Soon after arriving in the Delta Quadrant, Chakotay and his crew encountered a temporal anomaly that sent them about fifty years into the future to the year 2435. The Protostar landed on the planet Solum, whose people, the Vau N'Akat, sought to destroy the United Federation of Planets to prevent the collapse of their own society. Although the Vau N'Akat managed to plant a weapon on the Protostar, Chakotay sent the unmanned ship back in time before the weapon could be used. The Protostar ended up on Tars Lamora in the year 2366, where it sat until Dal and his young friends stumbled upon it in 2383.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 Will Have Time Travel To An Alternate Future

The majority of the voice cast from Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 return in season 2, for a time travel adventure that will connect multiple Star Trek series. At the end of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, Starfleet discovered that the destruction of the Protostar had created a new wormhole to the same coordinates where Chakotay and his crew had been lost. As Admiral Janeway, Dal, and the rest of their crew take the USS Voyager-A in search of Chakotay, they will have to travel through this wormhole into the alternate future.

When the Protostar arrived on Solum in 2435, the remnants of the Vau N'Akat people saw it as a way to save their civilization and get revenge on the Federation for the decades of civil war caused by First Contact. The events of Star Trek: Prodigy's season 1 finale, however, altered the future, since the Federation now knows about these events. Plus, Gwyndala (Ella Purnell) travels to her home planet of Solum with the hope of reuniting her people and preventing the civil war, and it remains to be seen what effect her efforts will have.

Star Trek: Prodigy is the first TV series in the Star Trek franchise marketed toward children, and one of the few animated series in the franchise. The story follows a group of young aliens who find a stolen Starfleet ship and use it to escape from the Tars Lamora prison colony where they are all held captive. Working together with the help of a holographic Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the new crew of the USS Protostar must find their way back to the Alpha Quadrant to warn the Federation of the deadly threat that is pursuing them.

I Don't Care If Modern Star Trek Breaks Established Canon

• Modern Star Trek should prioritize captivating stories over strict adherence to canonical details.
• Straying from established canon can allow for more creative storytelling and character development.
• Acknowledging Star Trek's inconsistent past can help future projects strike a balance between canon and originality.

It doesn't bother me when modern Star Trek strays from previously established canon. With its nearly sixty-year history, Star Trek has a vast and complicated canonical timeline that began in 1966 with Star Trek: The Original Series . Since then, numerous sequels and prequels have continued to build upon what began in TOS. Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and the USS Enterprise crew explored the stars, and I was captivated by their journey, not by the facts and figures of their various voyages.

Although Star Trek's various prequels and sequels try to uphold what has already been established, sticking too closely to canon can limit storytelling potential. When I watch Star Trek, I want to fall in love with compelling characters and embark on fantastical adventures; I don't really care when exactly the United Federation of Planets first encountered the Borg or when Kirk learned about Spock's Vulcan fiancée . That's not to say that modern Star Trek should intentionally contradict canon, but it's okay if it has to move some dates around or change an alien's appearance in service of a good story.

As prequels, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Discovery, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have already muddied the waters regarding canon.

Modern Star Trek Should Focus On Telling Good Stories, Not Strictly Upholding Canon

Besides, some of the plotlines that are considered canon are... not great..

With such an extensive history composed of numerous television shows and films, it's nearly impossible for any official canon to remain completely consistent, especially considering how many different people contribute to Star Trek . I think Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has done a particularly good job upholding the important elements of canon, while still focusing on telling good stories. I'm glad the Gorn no longer look like humans in bulky costumes, for example, and it doesn't bother me that Spock learned of the Gorn before he was technically "supposed" to.

I don't think Star Trek needs to explain and perfectly connect every single plotline.

With time travel and multiple universes, almost anything could be made to fit into canon, but I don't think Star Trek needs to go out of its way to make everything fit. Star Trek: Discovery , for example, ended with a connection to a Star Trek: Short Treks episode entitled "Calypso," and while it's nice for a story to come full circle, that connection felt largely unnecessary. I would have been perfectly content with the implication that "Calypso" happened in another universe, or even simply with that Short Trek remaining a mystery. The universe is full of mysteries, after all, and I don't think Star Trek needs to explain and perfectly connect every single plotline.

Star Trek: TOS Was Not Trying To Build A Consistent Canon Anyway

Establishing a franchise canon was not common in the 1960s..

Having an official canon for a franchise like Star Trek is a relatively new phenomenon. When Gene Roddenberry and his team were making Star Trek: The Original Series in the 1960s, they didn't have a show bible like modern television shows do. When a writer decided to give Captain Kirk a brother only to kill him off in the same episode, for example, they had no idea that someone would be telling stories about Lt. Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte) decades later. If they had, they might have let him live. TOS was not even consistent within its own continuity, making it impossible to uphold every established piece of information.

While I always appreciate when shows like Discovery or Strange New Worlds call back to Star Trek's history, I also don't mind when they veer away from it. I don't want Sam Kirk to be killed by weird flying parasites just because "Operation — Annihilate!" says he has to be. If the writers of Strange New Worlds find ways to make this plot point (or any other element of canon) part of a compelling story, then so be it. But I hope future Star Trek projects find a balance between sticking to canon and telling great stories. I mean, would anyone really be that upset if we all just pretended "Spock's Brain" never happened?
