Experience a rich and overlapping history, told from three singular perspectives. Three distinct outlooks, three separate national identities — one friendly welcome. Compare the royalty and pageantry of London with the very different majesty you will find in the rolling glens, lochs and highlands of Scotland. Of course, we think that Ireland holds the crown, with a landscape, a culture and a heritage that puts the Emerald Isle among the jewels of all European travel.

Our small groups guarantee Never more than 26 guests per tour
We always keep our tour group sizes small. That's because we want every guest to get the comfort, space and service they deserve. Although many other companies squeeze in groups of up to 50, even the largest of our tour packages are strictly limited to just 26 guests. That leaves empty seats on the coaches. So why do we limit our tours to such small group sizes? Here are six reasons.
Superior Service
Guests consistently list our small group sizes as a top reason why they would book with us again. See our reviews...
More focus on you
With a smaller group, our tour guides have more time to get to know you and your interests.
We deliberately leave empty seats on our coaches, so you can relax and spread out.
Experience each attraction up-close and personal, with more time to ask questions and see what interests you.
Speedier Check-Ins
Compared with many of our rivals, our smaller group sizes make checking in and out of the hotels a breeze.
More Relaxed Pace
Experience Ireland at your own pace. No rushing to keep up and no waiting around for large groups to assemble.

Ireland Tours
Touring Ireland is like being welcomed into the family and feeling like you’ve been a part of it the whole time. Sitting in an Irish pub, sipping on a Guinness. You can listen to the locals talk in their incredibly thick accents about something dramatic that happened to such-and-such down the road, who doesn't want to be a part of it? Good old Irish charm. Much like the locals, a tour of Ireland is full of stories and history. This is the land where giants carved the coastlines, fairies dwell deep in the forests, and luck flows through every landscape. Join our master storytellers on small group tours from Dublin , Belfast, or our newly launched depature point of Killarney . Dive deeper into this fascinating island, have some craic along the way, and uncover the tales of time gone by being brought to life. Simply choose the adventure that calls out to you the most. Will you try to count the basalt blocks at the Giant’s Causeway when you depart for a tour or Ireland from Belafast ? Follow in the footsteps of monks at Clonmacnoise Abbey? Or listen to the roar of the Atlantic along the rugged West Coast? Whichever path you choose, you’ll come back home a storyteller yourself, with a head full of souvenir stories and memories that last a lifetime.

Why you'll love an Ireland tour
Weird wonders lie in the landscapes
Giant’s causeway is 40,000 basalt columns. Cliffs of Moher is a 214m drop into the Atlantic Ocean. And the Dingle Peninsula is 75km of unspoilt beaches and jagged mountains. But the numbers don’t do it justice: you need to see it to believe it. And an Irish tour, led by knowledgeable driver-guides , can be just the answer.
Giants, leprechauns, and fairies
It feels as if every landscape you walk along on an Irish tour was crafted by a giant, ransacked by leprechauns, and traversed by a thousand banshees. So make sure to tune in to your guide’s tales. And who knows, maybe you’ll believe in some of them yourself.
Everyone wants to be Irish
Maybe it’s their accent, perhaps it’s their friendly nature, or it may even be their fantastic stories. But whatever it is, everyone loves the Irish. And after you tour Ireland, you’ll come home wishing you could be Irish too.
Atmospheric live entertainment
Vibrant, loud and exuberant. Irish cities are full of character and jam-packed with live entertainment venues. Whether it’s a traditional fiddle or a heavy guitar riff, an Irish gig is an energetic experience you cannot miss when touring the beautiful emerald isles.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Ireland
I had an incredible week on the Overland Great Atlantic Adventure tour! I went as a solo traveller in my 20s and, despite being nervous at first as the rest of the group were all travelling in pairs, had the best experience I could’ve asked for. We all had a great time together - I found the tour perfect for couples, family, friends and solo travellers alike. Our tour guide David was amazing, very kind, friendly and knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure the tour worked for everyone. If you join an Overland tour, you’ll be lucky to have David as your guide, he’s the best! All of the B&Bs/hotels were of great quality with breakfast included every day. The van is very comfortable and has plenty of space for a small group, much better than a huge coach full of 60 people (in my opinion). There was a fair bit of driving but it is inevitable with how much ground is covered. The places we visited and activities were all incredible. The only slight negative I have is that sometimes there were activities on the itinerary that we simply didn’t have time for - e.g. a 2.5 hour hike at the cliffs of moher, and with so much packed in you really don’t get much time to see some places. For example, we arrived in Westport around 7:30pm and left before 9am the next morning, but again that is inevitable with so much packed into such a short space of time. My highlights of the trip were kayaking in Dingle (I absolutely loved Dingle in general and am very glad we had 2 nights there) as well as climbing Croagh Patrick on our last day! The climb was tough but I would definitely recommend it if you’re able - an amazing experience. All in all I’m so glad I booked this trip and truly had the time of my life, I would definitely recommend Overland!
Small Bus touring is the way to go!
Marcus our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable in the history and culture of Ireland. He was very kind and good company. Very quick witted and funny. He timed all of the stops really well so we always had a place to use the bathroom and to grab snacks. Very communicative about the plan for the day and what we were going to see along the way. We were blessed with excellent weather most of the trip but one day was rainy and he was very good about rearranging to make sure that we still had a good time and got to see a lot. Very thorough tour got to see a lot of Ireland, a lot of ancient sites and learn about the cultures and history of the people who live there. Would highly recommend any of rabbies tours. We will definitely be back!!!!!!

Killarney-Galway Today after breakfast we may take a tour of Ireland’s stony place – The Burren. Continuing to the Cliffs of Moher are stupefying impressive and staggeringly beautiful. Wild and rugged, in some places here, Gaelic remains the only spoken language. We travel first to Clifden, (An Clochan). Founded in the early 19th century by John D’Arcy, it retains much of its Georgian architecture. Placed at the head of a broad Atlantic Bay and nestled below the Twelve Bens, the town is blessed by it beautiful setting. 2024 Tour Itinerary
Passengers who purchase flights will depart 1 day before the tour starts and return on the same day as the tour ends.
You can find more details on the Before You Depart page.
Day 1: Arrive in Dublin
Welcome to Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland. This city combines a deeply rooted history and culture with a vibrant and friendly atmosphere. Travelers who purchased our air-inclusive program will be met and transferred to our hotel for an orientation walk before check-in. This evening our tour director hosts a welcome dinner.
Day 2: Dublin
Good morning, Dublin! Our guided exploration of this charming city features diverse experiences. First, we'll enjoy a panoramic tour of Dublin. Our first stop is the magnificent Christchurch Cathedral and its medieval crypt which houses, among other things, Ireland's first copy of the Magna Carta and a mummified cat and rat (locally known as Tom and Jerry). We'll visit Trinity College and the Book of Kells* before enjoying the rest of the day at leisure. Dublin is a walkable city and our Tour Director can recommend local parks, pubs, and other sights to explore during our free time or consider joining our optional distillery tour of the Guinness Storehouse.
*Towards the end of 2023, the current visitor entrance in the Old Library will be relocated to a new entrance and exit via the new Visitor Centre, improving both accessibility and amenities to exhibition visitors.
Day 3: Dublin – Belfast
En route to Belfast, we'll stop at a hands-on baking demonstration at a family home in County Down. We'll enjoy a warm Irish welcome and a cup of coffee or tea with some homemade sweet treats. Our session starts with a traditional Irish Fruit Soda Cake, a sweet treat made with delicious homemade Irish butter. While our soda cake bakes in the oven, we'll make potato bread, or fadge as it's known in these parts We'll take home a bag filled with our handmade breads and sweet treats and all of the recipes we learned here at this traditional Northern Irish house.
We continue to historic Belfast where our tour continues. We'll see the curious "leaning" Albert Memorial Clock, the Opera Hosue, City Hall, Belfast's legendary pub, the Crown Bar; Queens University, and the Botanic Gardens. We'll also see Belfast's famous "peace wall," where murals illustrate the 30-year conflict called The Troubles. This evening we'll enjoy dinner at our hotel.
Day 4: Belfast
Today we'll learn more about a catastrophic event that has been captured in film, books, and television at the Titanic Belfast Experience. This must-see attraction uses special effects, full-scale reconstructions, and interactive features to bring the story of the ill-fated Titanic alive from its sinking to present-day exploration. After our visit, the rest of the day is ours to explore Belfast independently.
Day 5: Giant’s Causeway – Derry
We'll enter Game of Thrones territory today as we travel along the remote North Antrim Coast. Our destination: The Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and geological wonder. We'll learn all about the myths, legends, history, and geology of this amazing phenomenon before we continue to the picturesque port town of Derry. We'll enjoy a guided walking tour of Derry's highlights and stroll along wonderfully preserved medieval walls before our dinner together.
Day 6: Derry/Letterkenny – Sligo – Galway
Today’s journey takes us into County Sligo, where the contrast of calm lakes and rugged uplands inspired Nobel Prize-winning poet W. B. Yeats. We’ll visit the world-famous Belleek Pottery, housed in an imposing Victorian building. Our guided tour here takes us through the production areas where we'll have an opportunity to meet the craftspeople and watch them work on different handmade pieces. We'll continue to Galway, a harbor known for narrow streets, stone-clad buildings, and traditional pubs with live music. We'll enjoy an orientation tour of the city with a local guide and this evening we'll enjoy dinner together.
Day 7: Galway at Leisure
Today is ours to explore Galway at our own pace. We may consider a full-day optional tour to the breathtaking and utterly romantic Connemara region, where we'll visit the neo-goth Kylemore Abbey and take a scenic cruise on Killary Fjord to see why Oscar Wilde called the region "A Savage Beauty."
Day 8: Galway – Cliffs of Moher – Killarney
We'll start the day with a visit to Rathbaun Farm to see a sheepdog herding demonstration and enjoy freshly baked scones. Our travels continue through The Burren, a unique limestone landscape that will make us feel like we've landed on the moon, and along the Wild Atlantic Way to Ireland’s most iconic sight, the majestic Cliffs of Moher. Standing 702 feet above the ground at their highest point, the cliffs boast magnificent views of the Atlantic coast and provide nesting sites for thousands of seabirds. On a clear day, you can see the Aran Islands. Later, we’ll take the Shannon Ferry over to County Kerry and proceed to the lovely town of Killarney. Dinner tonight is included at your hotel.
Day 9: Ring of Kerry & Kenmare Excursion
Killarney is a great base for our expeditions in County Kerry over the next two days. Today we’ll take the Ring of Kerry route, stopping for panoramic views at Molls Gap and Ladies View. We’ll enjoy free time in the picturesque heritage town of Kenmare, which is set on the Ring of Kerry and known for its natural beauty, gourmet dining, and interesting craft shops. The afternoon is ours to further explore Killarney independently. This evening, consider our optional Kate Kearney’s Cottage traditional Irish night with dinner.
Day 10: Dingle Peninsula Excursion
Today we'll explore the Dingle Peninsula, quite possibly one of the most breathtaking spots in the world. Here, the Irish language and traditional ways are preserved, and we’ll enjoy a step back in time as we see mountains, beaches, dunes and the fishing village of Dingle. We'll enjoy some free time in Dingle Town before our scenic drive continues along the Dingle Peninsula, bewitching us with dramatic beauty and brightly painted cottages. We'll return to Killarney late this afternoon with the balance of the day free to relax after our day of touring or explore local shops. Our tour director is happy to offer suggestions for a pub or restaurant for our independent evening meal.
Day 11: Killarney – Blarney Castle – Limerick
Our first stop is the 5th-century Blarney Castle, famous for the Blarney Stone which is believed to bestow the "gift of gab" on those who kiss it. Our day continues to the Blarney Woolen Mills (where we can purchase a gorgeous heritage sweater!) and Adare, a picture-perfect village with pretty thatched cottages. We'll enjoy some free time in Adare before we stop for the evening in Limerick, which may have inspired the humorous verses of the same name. Enjoy our last evening together in medieval style with a farewell dinner at Bunratty Castle or Knappogue Castle. Featuring a piper in full regalia, grand period ambiance, and even goblets of mead, this candlelit feast with wine and entertainment is a fitting conclusion to our magical time in Ireland.
Day 12: Depart Limerick
Our tour comes to an end after breakfast this morning. Travelers who purchased our air-inclusive program will transfer to the airport early this morning for our return flight to the U.S., touching down later today.

About Booking This Tour
Travel Documents
If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Ireland; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.
If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Ireland to determine what travel documentation is required.
Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.
We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.
To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.
TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:
Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:
Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.
*Extreme Circumstances: In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.
Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.
This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

Travel Requirements For This Tour
Air Information and Luggage Restrictions
AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.
TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.
AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.
Checked Luggage – General
Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).
Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.
Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.
Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.
Carry-on Luggage - General
Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.
For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.
Health, Safety and Mobility
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.
If you are interested in sporting activities, many opportunities await you on this particular journey. Golfing is available at select resort hotels. You may rent clubs and purchase golf balls but you will have to bring your own footwear. If you would like to fully enjoy the exceptional courses at Ashford Castle, you may wish to schedule additional nights either before or after your tour. Experience has taught us that the earlier you book your tee time the better – even ahead of your departure! If you decide you would like to play once you have arrived, your Tauck Director will endeavor to honor your request. Tennis facilities are available at several hotels including Ashford Castle and Aghadoe Heights Hotel. Fishing is possible at Ashford Castle. Horseback riding is available at Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa and Ashford Castle. You will have the opportunity to swim in the pool at several of the hotels used on this tour. Any expenses incurred in conjunction with these optional activities are at your own expense.
Ireland has introduced a ban on smoking in all enclosed places of work in Ireland. This includes all bars, night clubs, restaurants and hotels. Although the public spaces within the hotel are non-smoking, you may request a smoking guest room at your hotel.
Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.
If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.
VACCINATIONS
If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Ireland. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.
If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of Ireland to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.
SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS
The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.
The Best of Ireland, Small Groups involves a considerable amount of walking. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. The visits to the Cliffs of Moher, Kylemore Abbey and Giant's Causeway are challenging due to the steep climbs and long walks involved in the sightseeing.
Most hotels do not have special handicap access rooms.
PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.
Reading List
We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!
You can view the reading list here.
The weather in Ireland can be variable, alternating between wet and cool days, and sunny and mild days. The climate is generally moderate throughout the country, tempered by the Atlantic Ocean Gulf Stream. Average high temperatures from April through October range from 55 to 65˚F (13 to 18˚C) and the average low temperatures range from 40 to 55˚F (4 to 13˚C). Ireland, like other European countries, has experienced unusually warm spells in recent summers. Ireland's greenery owes its notoriety to the frequent rainfall.
To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.
What To Pack
Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .
The weather in Ireland is moderate. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. The Emerald Isle owes its name to its precipitation, so rain is to be expected anytime.
In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket and tie for men are acceptable dining attire, although it is not required. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.
You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.
We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.
Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Ireland:
- Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
- An optional jacket and tie for men
- Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
- A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
- Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
- Insect repellent
- Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
- Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
- Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
- Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
- Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
- Daypack for camera equipment
- Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
- Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Our Driftwood Tour was amazing. Having a small group made the adventure so much more fun.
Having a smaller vehicle let us explore places that big buses couldn’t reach.
My only dilemma is what trip to book with them next.

Working Together with You
We are a small and tight knit team at Small Escorted Tours and in every sense it’s a family company. Because we are small we all work together on each tour, getting to know our guests in advance so that we can work with you to perfectly tailor your vacation and make it the experience of a lifetime.
Anne is convinced that getting the little details right is what makes a vacation really special and nothing makes her day like an email from a happy client. She is famous locally for her warm hospitality (and her delicious scones!) and insists that we treat everyone who travels with us as we would a welcome friend.
Paul is also in charge of making sure our vehicles are always in tip top condition. He has two children, Luke and Lily.
Marian has two adult children, Katie and Paul and two grandchildren, Ellen and Hugo.
Tommy has enjoyed many holidays travelling around Ireland with his family over the years and really enjoys using this experience to help guests plan itineraries which meet and exceed all their expectations.
He is an Irish Tourist Board qualified National Tour Guide and knows all the best places to visit, including many hidden and off the beaten path gems. Our guests appreciate his easy good-humoured company and the way he always seems know instinctively how to make their tours that extra bit special.
She is the best girl!
Those who had the pleasure of touring with him were struck by Michael’s passion when talking about Ireland and his extensive knowledge of the country along with his story telling and his wicked sense of humour. Michael put up a brave fight against cancer but unfortunately passed away in January 2009.
We are all very proud of Small Escorted Tours of Ireland and know it would not be the company it is today without Michael’s hard work and dedication. He was a perfectionist and was driven by the desire to provide every guest with their best ever vacation. We miss him greatly.
We greatly miss her serenity and gentleness.

99+ Free Ireland Self Drive Tours (All Done For You)
By Author Keith O'Hara
Posted on Last updated: August 21, 2023
We spent 8 months and €16,000 creating the world’s largest collection of free Ireland self drive tours.
Why? Well, planning an Ireland itinerary can be stressful – especially if you don’t know the lay of the land.
So, we’ve done all the hard work for you ! Each of our self driving tours of Ireland:
- Can be filtered by length, how fast you like to travel + more
- Have been meticulously planned
- Have hour-by-hour itineraries
- Follow logical and scenic routes
Table of Contents
Some quick need-to-knows about our Ireland self drive tours
WAIT – please take 10 seconds to read the points below before you scroll. It’ll help when it comes to browsing our Ireland self drive tours:
1. They cover every possible angle
We’ve tried to cover every possible want or need with our itineraries. Below, you’ll be able to pick a free driving tour of Ireland based on:
- Trip length : From 2 to 28 days
- Start point : All major ferry terminals and airports in Ireland
- How fast you like to travel : Fast or slow
- Your fitness level: High fitness or medium-to-low fitness
2. Our free self drive tours vs what other companies charge for
There are countless companies that charge for creating self guided tours of Ireland. You’ll generally pay them a hefty fee and they’ll customise a trip based on your likes and dislikes. Some also help you book hotels along with renting a car in Ireland .
We don’t do any of this . We’ve simply created an extensive library of detailed road trip itineraries that we definitely could charge for – but we don’t.
3. Jump to the tour length you want
Right – time to get stuck in! The easiest way to browse our self drive Ireland tours is to select how much time you have and work from there. Select a trip length below:
3 day driving tours of Ireland
3 days in Ireland is a tiny chunk of time so you need to be careful – it’s easy to end up trying to do way too much.
With this trip length, the danger is that you’ll end up with a packed schedule, and most of your time will be spent in the car.
The best Ireland self drive tours for 3 days is one that uses a central base and that sees you explore around you on day trips.
4 day Ireland self drive itineraries
Those of you with 4 days in Ireland have the ability to explore a corner of Ireland in depth.
However, a word of caution – if you have the ability to choose when to visit Ireland , try and visit during spring or summer.
These seasons have the advantage of long and mostly bright days, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore.
These shorter road trips can be tricky to map out at times so, when it comes to planning a trip to Ireland with only 4 days to work with, take your time.
The best Ireland self drive tours for 4 days is one that uses 1 – 2 ‘bases’ max and that explores a specific corner of Ireland, e.g. Kerry and West Cork.
5 day self driving tours of Ireland
5 days in Ireland is arguably the ideal length of time to explore a specific corner of Ireland, e.g. Galway and Mayo.
These 5 day trips our most popular self guided tours of Ireland. The reason for this is people often panic trying to squeeze in too much.
Chill! Each of our 5 day self guided tours of Ireland follow clear and logical routes.
6 day self guided Ireland tours
6 days in Ireland is a lovely amount of time that provides you with endless opportunities.
The best Ireland self drive tours for 6 days, in my opinion, is one that doesn’t stretch itself too thin.
If you’re starting in Belfast, for example, tackle the Causeway Coastal Route and then explore the many places to visit in Donegal .
7 day self guided tours of Ireland
If you’re spending 7 days in Ireland you’re in for a treat. A week gives you lots of options and a good whack of time to play with.
Longer Irish road trips like these give you loads of flexibility in terms of what you can do (even if it means the cost of a trip to Ireland increases).
If you’re visiting for 7 days, try and visit during summer or spring as the weather in Ireland tends to be better then and you’ll get more bang-for-your-buck.
8 day self drive tours of Ireland
Those with 8 days in Ireland have options, which is a luxury.
You’re not overly constrained by time, and 8 long days guarantee that you won’t need to hurry at any point (unless you want to, that is!).
With 8 days, you have the chance to explore multiple counties in depth. Or, if you like, you can go all-out and pack in as much as is physically possible.
The best driving tours of Ireland for 8 days, for me, would be starting in Dublin and then working down through Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford and then around through Cork and Kerry.
9 day Ireland self drive tours
So, you’re spending 9 days in Ireland . Wonderful! However, you want to see all of the ‘main’ attractions during this time and you’re worried it’s too much.
It’s likely (and I’m basing this on getting emails from endless visitors) that you’re trying to pack in too much to the point that you’ll spend all your time moving accommodation and travelling.
9 days is a lovely chunk of time. But don’t get carried away. You can see and do a lot during this time frame. You just need to decide how much travelling about is ‘too much’.
10 day driving tours of Ireland
Our 10 days in Ireland guides are the second most popular trip length and we first published them several years back.
Since then, they’ve been edited based on endless feedback and they have now been refined into tours that we’re proud of!
This is a mighty amount of time for an Irish road trip and it gives you a huge amount of flexibility.
For this trip length, you could easily pick 3-4 bases and fit a huge amount in while still taking it nice and handy. Or, you could go full whack and try and see as much of the island as possible!
11 day Ireland self drive itineraries
Those spending 11 days in Ireland are the envy of many. This is a lovely chunk of time and it allows you to really explore until your heart’s content.
You can pick one of our Ireland self drive tours based on your starting point (e.g. Shannon or Belfast), your fitness level and how fast you like to travel.
Many people doing a trip of this length tend to edge towards fitting in as much as possible. However, avoid going overboard if you can.
12 day self guided Ireland tours
If you’re spending 12 days in Ireland , you’re in for a treat. You can see a whole lot in 12 days, from the many castles in Ireland to islands, cliffs and lots more.
You don’t have to worry too much when it comes to picking a start point for a trip of this length, as you’ve a bit of room for error.
If I had the option, I’d start in Cork and drive the Wild Atlantic Way, taking in the likes of Kinsale , the Beara Peninsula , Doolin and Achill Island .
13 day self driving tours of Ireland
If you have 13 days in Ireland you’ll be the envy of many, and for good reason – you can cover a lot of ground on one of our 13 day driving tours of Ireland.
We’ve created 56 different self guided tours of Ireland for a 13-day trip (yes, 56) and they’ve been used by over 100,000 people in only a few short months.
The different routes take in everywhere from County Mayo and County Clare to some of the most charming small towns in Ireland . Check ’em out below!
14 day Ireland self drive tours
Our 14 day self guided Ireland tours were some of the most enjoyable to research, plan and write as we had a fair idea that this trip length would be popular.
Thankfully, it was! Those of you planning a 2-week Ireland trip itinerary are on the cusp of a bucket list road trip that you’ll remember for a life time.
Although I’d argue that there’s no best Ireland itinerary for a trip this length, we’ve created 56 different options for you to choose from at the link below.
15 day self guided tours of Ireland
15 days in Ireland poses an endless amount of adventure opportunities. You have a trip that’ll be the envy of many ahead of you.
Now, with 15 days you have a lot of flexibility. You could easily explore opposite ends of Ireland with this amount of time (e.g. 5 days in Donegal, 3 in Antrim and then remainder in Cork and Kerry).
We spent a huge amount of time mapping out our 17-day Ireland self drive tours and, based on initial feedback, they’re going down very well already!
16 day self guided Irish road trip
16 day Irish road trips give you the chance to see a huge amount of Ireland.
As was the case with all of our self guided tours of Ireland, we spent a lot of time planning our 16-day guides.
At the link below, you’ll be able to pick a trip based on start point, fitness level, mode of transport and how fast you like to travel.
17 day self drive vacations Ireland
Although we don’t encounter many people spending 17 days in Ireland , this trip length does crop up from time-to-time.
To be honest with you, we found the 17 day self guided Ireland tours tricky to plan out.
However, we published and then heavily edited again after 5 months of feedback and our 17-day tour guides have now been read well over 30,000 times.
The best Ireland self drive tours for this length of time are ones that use carefully selected bases and avoid moving accommodation too frequently.
18 day self drive Ireland itinerary
18 day Irish road trips are the stuff of dreams. It’s worth comparing our ‘Fast’ and ‘Slow’ 18-day driving tours of Ireland to see what’s possible with a trip of this length.
Those of you looking to see and do as much as possible will fit plenty into 18 days.
Those looking to explore at a leisurely pace might be surprised at what’s possible when following one of our 18-day self guided Ireland tours.
19 day self guided Ireland tour
A 19 day Irish road trip is hard to bate, however, and I know I’m like a broken record at this stage, it comes with pros and cons.
Planning self guided tours of Ireland of this length often lead people to think, ‘Ah, we’ve plenty of time – we can just head to Ireland and take it as it comes’ .
Don’t be that person as you’ll regret it when you get here. A trip of this length requires careful consideration and a lot of planning.
Luckily, we’ve 50+ 19-day driving tours of Ireland for you to browse at the link below.
20 days self driving tours of Ireland
Very few people, aside from those of us who live here, have the chance to spend 20 days in Ireland . This is bucket list territory.
This trip length provides you with two options:
- Explore a specific region of Ireland in depth
- Cram in as much as possible
For example, you could explore Kerry (the Ring of Kerry , Dingle Peninsula , etc.) and then progress through West Cork, Waterford, Wexford, and more.
The best self guided tours of Ireland for 20 days is one picks an adequate number of bases near key areas of interest and that avoids falling into the trap of trying to ‘fit everything in’.
21 days in Ireland self guided
If you have the luxury of spending 21 days in Ireland , you’re in for a treat. An unforgettable experience awaits.
This was one of the hardest of our Ireland self drive tours to map out as there’s a danger of doing either too much or too little with a trip of this length.
It took us 8 days to research these 21-day itineraries and twice that to write and edit them. Enjoy!
FAQs about the best Ireland self drive tours
We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from Ireland vacation ideas to detailed train itineraries.
In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, ask away in the comments section below.
Can I tour Ireland on my own?
Yes. Although many people tackle driving tours of Ireland with friends or family, many people go it alone. Ireland is relatively small which means that you can see a lot, even on day trips.
How many days do you need to drive around Ireland?
Although we have free self drive Ireland tours ranging from 2 to 28 days, the minimum we’d recommend for driving around Ireland is 7 days. Just keep in mind that you’ll be very limited in what you can see and do.
How do I plan a driving tour of Ireland?
Start with how long you have to play with and work from there. Once you have your trip length, move to when you can visit and then proceed to what part of Ireland you can arrive into.
