Whether you are travelling by bus or by train to Galway, chances are you will be starting your self-guided walking tour of Galway in Eyre Square . Galway train station as well as the city bus station are just around the corner from this popular meeting place.

At the heart of the city, Eyre Square is dominated by the Quincentennial Fountain , a piece of abstract art erected in 1984 for Galway’s 500th anniversary as a city. The structure represents the sails of the hooker boats, traditional fishing vessels that were in use in the area.

On its south side, the Hardiman Hotel has been standing proudly over the square since the mid-nineteenth century. The luxurious and grand-looking hotel has been hosting celebrities and dignitaries since its opening, starting with Prince Louis Napoleon of France in 1857.

West of the square, you will find the entrance to the Eyre Square Centre, Galway’s main shopping centre. Further up the street, the Skeffington Arms Hotel has welcomed hungry passers-by for some hearty pub food and drinks since 1850.

As you leave Eyre Square by Williamsgate Street and head towards Shop Street, you enter the medieval part of the city. The pedestrian neighbourhood stretching from Shop Street to the left bank of the river Corrib is now known as the Latin Quarter . Filled with craft shops, boutique, cafés, pubs and buskers singing their hearts out, it is the most vibrant part of Galway.

The name “Latin Quarter” refers to medieval Galway which prospered up to the 17th century thanks to successful trade routes with the Iberia peninsula. The name was officially adopted by the neighbourhood in 2009.

As you stroll down the Latin Quarter’s cobbled streets, enjoy the pubs’ colourful facades that compete for your attention. Bright red, green or yellow, their quirkiness attracts countless visitors each year and are the perfect background for your pictures.

The Quays, pub in the Latin Quarter, Galway

The area is also famous for its Claddagh ring jewellers. The traditional Irish ring, symbol of love, loyalty and friendship, is said to have been born in Galway some 300 years ago. Wander into some of the many shops selling the quintessential Irish jewellery, and you’ll perhaps be tempted to buy the perfect gift for yourself or a loved one.

Amongst interesting landmarks to be found in the Latin Quarter during your self-guided walking tour of Galway is Lynch’s Castle . Located at the corner of Shop Street and Abbeygate Street, the building’s architecture is absolutely striking. Lynch’s Castle is a great example of a 16th century fortified house. Adorned with magnificent carved windows and gargoyles, it was built by the Lynches, one of the 14 merchant families who receiving governing powers from Richard II in 1396. These powerful families were to be known as the 14 Tribes of Galway.

Lynch's Castle, Galway

As you make your way to the bottom of the Latin Quarter, you will find the Spanish Arch on the bank of the River Corrib. The extraordinarily thick arches, built at the end of the 16th century, were an extension of the town wall to protect the quays from attacks. The Spanish Arch is a vivid reminder of what Galway used to be in medieval times: a walled city under constant threat of incursions by Gaelic clans. Its name is thought to be a reference to the Spanish ships mooring there when Galway was an important trading post in the West of Ireland .

Galway Museum

Just a few metres away from the Spanish Arch, Galway Museum is free to explore. The museum holds long-term and temporary exhibitions. I had the chance to see their wonderful exhibition on the Gaelic society and culture of the Middle Ages. I highly recommend it.

Now that you are on the bank of the River Corrib , take a moment to admire the view over the water and Galway Bay. Across from the Spanish Arch, on the other side of the river, lies the Claddagh . This modern part of Galway used to be a fishing village with thatched-roof cottages. The village gave its name to the famous ring. The cottages were unfortunately demolished at the beginning of the 20th century to make way for modern housing.

The River Corrib, Galway

Only 6 kilometres long, the River Corrib is a short but powerful river that surges through the city and owes its name to Lough Corrib, a lake north of Galway. Three bridges span the river in the inner city. The first one is the Wolf Tone Bridge directly on your right.

Walk along the River Corrib in Galway

From there, you can follow a walking path along the river that would lead you to the second and third bridge, the Salmon Weir Bridge . The path makes for a quick but exhilarating walk along the rushing water of the River Corrib. If you are lucky, you could even see some wildlife. I caught sight of a graceful heron standing still in the water, on the lookout for its next meal.

Once arrived at the Salmon Weir Bridge, your next stop can’t be more obvious. Standing on the opposite side of the bridge, the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas, also known as Galway Cathedral , is free to visit.

Built in the 1960s, the cathedral of Galway is one of the last cathedrals to be built in Europe. The Gaol Road at the back of the building is a reminder that it was erected on the site of a former prison.

Galway Cathedral

Its modern architecture has brought criticism, some calling it frankly “ugly”. Mixing different styles, the imposing building will certainly not leave people indifferent. Whatever your first impression is, don’t be fooled by its rather stern exterior.

Once inside, the nave is large and airy. Flanked by round arches drawing from the Romanesque tradition, the slightly curved, wooden ceiling contrasts with the grey limestone of the walls. The wooden pews echo the ceiling, bringing light and warmth to a building that could have been otherwise cold and joyless.

Galway Cathedral, Nave

Eyes are drawn to the magnificent Renaissance dome framed by four angels spreading their wings all around it. Above the northern wall, a colourful rose window is framed by a pipe organ spanning the entire length of the wall, a modern piece of art floating in the air.

From Galway Cathedral, follow University Road for just 500 metres, and you will soon catch a glimpse of the University of Galway ’s oldest building. Known as the Quadrangle because of its shape, it was built in bold Tudor Gothic architectural style. Its construction started in 1846, and the building welcomed its first students in 1849.

The Quadrangle, University of Galway

Founded as Queen’s College, the Quadrangle was modelled on Christ Church college at the University of Oxford. The rectangular building can be entered freely through an archway found on the East Wing, underneath a clock tower crowned by a green copper dome.

The Quadrangle, Galway

Inside the courtyard, you are left to face the stunning architecture surrounding you from all corners. The Aula Maxima , or Great Hall, occupies the centre of the West Wing, whose facade disappears under a thick blanket of ivy framing a splendid arched window. It is flanked with two thin octagonal towers crowned with copper, while arcades extend to both ends of the West Wing.

The Quadrangle, University of Galway

Wherever you look, the splendid building surrounds you with history, the ivy creeping around doors and windows, giving the place a timeless atmosphere. In keeping with its historic environment, an old lamppost borrowed from black and white movies, stands right at the centre of the courtyard, providing the final touch to this romantic place. Don’t miss it, even if you only have one day in Galway .

Now retrace your steps back to the cathedral and cross once again the Salmon Weir Bridge. Turn right after the bridge on Newtownsmith. Walk for another 5 to 10 minutes and take a right on Market Street. Here you will find the Lynch Memorial Window .

At first glance, what looks like the remains of an old house is in fact a monument to a rather spooky event that may, or may not, have happened in 15th century Galway.

Lynch Memorial Window, Galway

The story goes that in 1493 Walter, the son of James Lynch FitzStephen, mayor of Galway, was found guilty of murdering a Spanish merchant who has his eyes set upon Walter’s girlfriend.

Unable to find someone to carry out the death penalty, it is told that the principled mayor of Galway hung his son himself from a window of his own house. Although the house was not located in Market Street, the original window is said to be the one featured in the monument placed here in the 19th century. The ominous skull and crossbones carved under the window give the place a hair-rising touch that will stay with you for a little while.

True story or not, the fate of Walter Lynch, killed by his own father, gave us the well-known expression “to lynch someone”.

At the back of the Lynch Memorial Monument, you will find Ireland’s largest medieval parish church . Founded in 1320, it is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors. In 1477, Christopher Columbus prayed here as he visited Galway.

Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas, Galway

As you will see from the outside, the central part of the church has an unusual roof consisting of three pitched roofs. In the 16th century, the church was extended with two side aisles to the nave by the Frenches and the Lynches, two of the 14 Tribes of Galway, hence the church’s curious shape.

You are welcome to take a peek inside the church, which is open every day. Avoid service time though, so as to not disturb the parishioners. You will find interesting monuments and memorials, including the church’s oldest tomb dating from the 13th century.

  • The Dingle Peninsula – It is a 30 mile long clockwise loop that takes about 4 hours to complete. The area is the bedrock of Irish culture with signs in many villages and towns indicating that Irish is the predominant language in the area. The picturesque landscape includes rolling hills, craggy shorelines and sandy beaches. The PDF map and attractions guide explores the attractions of the Dingle Peninsula

Galway is still known today as the City of the Tribes, the name referring to 14 important Anglo-Norman merchant families who lived there and dominated the life and trade of the city during the middle ages.

The families were: Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, D’Arcy, Deane, Ffont, Ffrench, Joyes, Kirwan, Lynch, Martin, Morris and Skerrett.

From 1232 when Richard de Burgo drove out the ruling Gaelic O’Flaherty’s, until the end of the 1600’s Galway flourished as a centre of trade. During the 15th and 16th centuries ships from Spain, France, the Carribean and South America crowded its harbour and the town was a wealthy one.

It all went wrong in 1692. The city gave its support to James II in the English Civil War. He lost. When the victorious William of Orange sent his forces to ‘restore religion and liberty’ in Ireland Galway was firmly in his sights. The city was taken, its families relieved of their power and influence and the city sank into an economic depression from which it only truly emerged in the latter half of the 20th century.

A. Eyre Square

self guided walking tour galway

Eyre Square by Night by ebby

This is the centre of Galway and the pivot around which the city moves. The land here was given to the city 1710 by Edward Eyre, then mayor of Galway.

In 1965, the square was officially renamed “Kennedy Memorial Park” and there is a bust of J.F. Kennedy in the park.

The square underwent quite radical change in the early years of this century, a process that was not without its controversies. In truth any change to a place with such a central part in the life of a city would have been controversial and overall the outcome has been better than expected.

There is often something going on in Eyre Square, perhaps some street performance as part of a festival, maybe an open air concert or possibly a protest about some controversial issue. There are plenty of places to sit for a few minutes and get a feel for the life and hum of the city.

It’s worth dropping into the Tourist Office here to pick up information about what’s on ( there is always something on in Galway !). The Eyre Square Shopping Centre, a modern mall, may be of interest for picking up some souvenirs.

B. Lynch’s Castle & Shop St

Lynchs Castle Galway

Lynch’s Castle

Lynch’s Castle  was once home to an  important family, one of the tribes, who supplied the city with more than 80 mayors between the 15th and 17th centuries. It  now houses a branch of the AIB bank.

The castle dates to the early 1300’s, though the current building was mostly built in 1503 following a catastrophic fire some years previously. It has been extended and altered often over the years, with the current doors added as recently as the 1930’s, so that different aspects of the building reflect various periods in Galway’s history. You can have a look inside during banking hours and there is a series of panels there which tell the story of the castle through all its changes.

The Wilde Chat, by Neil Carey

The Wilde Chat, by Neil Carey

As you continue down Shop St, you can’t miss the statue of Oscar Wilde, sitting on a bench in conversation with Estonian writer Eduard Wilde.

This is one of a pair of identical statues – the other one stands in Tartu in Estonia  – and was presented to Galway to mark the occasion of Estonia joining the EU in 2004. Though they share a surname the two men are unrelated and never actually met or chatted in real life, though they were contemporaries.

C. St Nicholas of Myra Church

self guided walking tour galway

St Nicholas of Myra Church by boocal

Towards the end of Shop St down a side street on the right is the 14th century Collegiate Church of St Nicholas of Myra , built from Connemara Marble and local limestone and named for the saint otherwise known as Santa Claus.

The church has served its congregation, at some times Catholic, at others (as now) Protestant,  for more than 650 years. The only interruption to this came in 1652 when Cromwell’s forces seized the church and used it for a time as stabling for horses.

The one time importance of Galway as a trading centre is evident from the tombs in the church which have symbols of trades included in their decoration – with a stone mason, a wool merchant and a goldsmith among them.

More about St Nicholas of Myea Church

If you are in Galway on a Saturday the area outside the church will be a hive of activity as a weekly market takes place there. This is a good market with a lot of locally produced food and crafts and it’s well worth pausing for a rummage.

Lynch’s Window

self guided walking tour galway

Lynch’s Window by celesteh

Just outside St Nicholas Church, this rather ghoulish panel appears below a window in the only remaining wall of a building that was once another home of the Lynch family.

The story goes that in 1493 Walter, son of the serving mayor James Lynch, was found guilty of murdering a Spaniard and sentenced to death. However he was a popular and well regarded figure locally, few believed him guilty and nobody willing to carry out the sentence could be found. Determined that the rule of law would prevail, James Lynch hung his own son at this spot.

This act is said to have given the English language the expression ‘to Lynch’.

D. Home of Nora Barnacle

Nora Barnacle's House

It has been nicely restored and not only has some interesting material relating the Nora and her husband but is an interesting glimpse into how an ordinary working family in Galway lived during the early part of the 20th century.

The house is not always open outside the high season and opening times are unpredictable the rest of the time, but if possible do go in for a look around.

Your walk to the next point on the tour takes you though a street, Newtownsmith , which has undergone extensive rebuilding in recent years. It was once the location of a large mill and an important industrial area in the 19th century. All that remains now is a plaque on the facade of a building marking the location of the old mill.

E. Galway Cathedral

self guided walking tour galway

Galway Cathedral by Samuca

Galway Cathedral, completed in 1965 and built of local Galway limestone, is something of an architectural oddity. It mixes several architectural styles, with a Renaissance influence to the fore, a Gothic style to the arches in the nave, a Spanish look to the side aisles and a Romaneque tower to top things off. Yet it somehow works.

There is some very interesting art in the Cathedral, which is something of a repository for ecclesiastical art over the last 40-50 years in Ireland and well worth visiting. There is also a magnificent pipe organ and if you happen (or plan) to visit while there is a mass on you may be lucky enough to hear it in full voice.

More about Galway Cathedral

Nuns Island

On leaving the Cathedral you can walk to the next point of the tour via a part of Galway City known as Nun’s Island, so named because it was given by Galway Corporation to the Poor Clares, an order of nuns, in 1649. The Poor Clares convent is still there, but it is an enclosed order so the building is not open to the public.

self guided walking tour galway

Quay St by Barnacles Hostels

Quay St has many small craft shops and restaurants and also two famous pubs, The Quay’s which is famed for its traditional music sessions and Tigh Neachtain , where the old interior with its little ‘snugs’ or booths is a real beauty.

Both pubs serve very good lunches and are noted for their seafood – so a good plan would be to aim to reach this point on the tour at lunchtime.

Humanity Dick

Richard Martin, an 18th century Member of Parliament whose nickname was ‘Humanity Dick’, lived in the house which is now Neachtain’s pub. He was a well known animal lover and early animal rights activist who founded the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the RSPCA, the first animal welfare charity to be founded in the world

G. The Spanish Arch (and The Galway Girl)

self guided walking tour galway

Spanish Arch by sensoredmedia

Once an old and run down area this is now a modernised and trendy part of town, though some not very attractive new development takes away from the look of the area.

You’ll pass the Galway City Museum as you walk to the Spanish Arch – it’s worth a quick visit.

The arch was built in 1584, to give access to an extension to the Quays known, still, as The Long Walk. The origin of its name is something of a mystery, though it was probably named for the Spanish traders who frequently used the harbour.

Galway had very extensive trading links with Spain for many centuries and a Spanish influence can been seen in quite a few buildings around the city. It’s even said that the dark haired, blue-eyed Galway Girl of the song by Steve Earles (who lived for some time in Galway) and the many in the area who share her colouring, owe their looks to the ‘influence’ of Spanish sailors!

The song opens with the line ‘I took a stroll by the old Long Walk..’ and is performed below by Irish singer Mundy with the inimitable Sharon Shannon on accordion, accompanied by a lot of people having a very, very good time in Dolans in Limerick. Watch out for those Galway girls!

H. The Claddagh

self guided walking tour galway

Claddagh Docks by William Bereza

The area known as The Claddagh , from the Irish ‘ An Cladach ‘ which means ‘ flat stony shore ‘, sadly no longer has any visible trace of its interesting past.

The area was settled originally when the occupants of the city were driven there by Norman forces in Medieval times. They fiercely maintained their traditional culture through the centuries, maintaining their own customs and dress, laws and language and even had their own ‘king’, the last of whom died in the 1950’s.

Until relatively recently, up to the 1970s, it was not unusual to see ‘citizens’ of the Claddagh in the city wearing their traditional black dress and shawls.

In 1937 the old thatched cottages and buildings around the harbour were demolished and their occupants dispersed to various places around the city, breaking up this centuries old community. Modern housing was built, sadly leaving nothing of the Claddagh’s proud past. Still, it’s a nice place for a walk by the Claddagh Basin, a stretch of water that is famous for its resident mute swans.

The Claddagh Ring

Claddagh Ring by Athena's Pix

A Claddagh Coupling by Athena’s Pix

This well known style of ring has three motifs, symbolising Friendship (the hands), Love (the heart) and Fidelity (the crown).

Traditionally if worn with the crown towards the fingers it means that the wearer was married, if worn the other way it signifies the wearer’s availability for matrimony. More about the Claddagh Ring and where to buy one in Galway here .

I. Nimmos Pier

self guided walking tour galway

View from Nimmo’s Pier by jdiego_gr

This long pier stretches out into Galway Bay and is a favourite walking route for Galway residents. The park along side is regularly used for special events, concerts and so on during Galway’s many festival.

Not everyone will want to add this extra walk, but it is a very enjoyable one. Apart from great views across the Claddagh Basin and out to sea, it is a favoured spot for bird watchers, with many species of gull especially making regular appearances and a few swans almost always waiting to be photographed!

Alexander Nimmo

The pier is named after Alexander Nimmo, a Scottish Engineer who spent most of his working life in Galway. From 1821 until shortly before his death in 1832 he was responsible for building of government funded roads and piers throughout Galway and many other parts of the west of Ireland.

With pretty much complete autonomy to decide where roads went and where piers were built, he had the power to decide which towns would grow and prosper and how the area would be traversed. As a result his influence extends down the years into every aspect of life in the region today.

Footfalls Walking Hiking

Aran Islands Tour + Western Way Walk | Footfalls Walking Holidays

Self-guided aran islands tour + the western way (ireland), self-guided aran islands tour from galway.

Your walking adventure begins with an Aran Islands tour from Galway, taking the ferry to the largest of the islands: Inishmore. This part of Ireland is unique; it is rich in poetic roots and haunting history. The walking trail we recommend also offers some of the finest scenery that Ireland has to offer along the Wild Atlantic Way.

The Aran Islands have been dubbed “One of The World’s Top Island Destinations” by National Geographic. Describing them as an “Unspoilt, beautiful, and dramatic destination for archaeology, bird-watching, and spectacular hill walking.” We couldn’t agree more!

After your short but sweet Aran Islands walking tour, you will return to the west coast and enjoy walking part of the Western Way in beautiful, wild Connemara.

If you’re keen to explore more of that part of Ireland, take a look at our self guided Western Way walking tours in Connemara for a wider variety of route options.

We also offer a wide variety of guided walking tours of Ireland if you’d prefer the expertise and convenience of a friendly local professional leading the way.
