“We had three adults and three children aged 10 and under to visit the museum. I bought the ticket and added the hidden gems tour as well. The children had an amazing time and thoroughly enjoyed hunting for the secret doors! They found, unbelievably, 26 of them! That said, for a first time visit, it's probably not necessary to do the add-ons especially since I had to pay x6 which increased the cost a fair bit. There's definitely enough to see and searching to do without adding on. For a second, third or fourth visit (and that would be fun to do!) adding on some of the other tours would enhance the visit. I'm so glad we stumbled onto this. I was looking for something fun to do with the children and this hit the mark for sure.”

For $33, one can spend all the time they'd like to find the 70+ secret doors throughout the 30,000 square foot mansion that consists of 5 row houses.It truly is an eclectic blend of items, rooms, and decorations, where almost anything and everything is on sale! Make sure to stare up at the ceilings!Famous musicians have visited this place, which explains a lot of signed guitars throughout the rooms. They have artwork hanging on the walls from artists in residency. There's a wine cellar, an Elvis Presley room, and a Rosa Parks room, who stayed here for 10 years.”

“Ted and his co-hosts were fantastic! We wanted him to accommodate a larger group for our time slot (12, compared to the max of 10), and they were very responsive. They made it easy to schedule, there were no problems, and our group had a lot of fun exploring! We split into many smaller groups and bumped into each other randomly through the hidden doors. It was a lot of fun, would recommend for anyone who has never tried this type of attraction before.”

The opportunity to find secret doors was an added bit of fun. Our group found 11. There were many rooms off limits during our visit, and it was crowded enough that we quickly started to feel claustrophobic. It made it very hard to get around and really look at much. We spent a bit over an hour there and had to leave because it was getting more and more crowded by the minute and we were uncomfortable. If the number of people in a time period were better managed we felt like we would get to see more and enjoy our time better. Otherwise it was very nice. Our your time was 11am on a Thursday.”

“OMG! This museum was the highlight of our visit. We came for the Cherry Blossom festival but made a point to visit museums and so very glad this one was on the list. It was the first stop of the weekend and nothing else compared. I have an 11 year old son and for him it became a competition of who could find the most secret doors. I think we ultimately tied but he was happy to tell other visitors when he was ahead. An additional highlight was meeting and chatting with HH. Talked to Ted as well but didn't realize it was him. He told me a funny story about one of the secret doors I asked him about and then shared a YouTube video with us to go with the story. They are so down to earth and it added to the experience. I also appreciate HH signing a couple books to me and the message she wrote.The staff we interacted with were great also. Great sense of humor and willing to provide a nugget or two of information about the mansion but they didn't give anything away.It is a must visit and will be on my list for every trip to Washington.”

“If you are trying to fit in everything when you come to DC, you can fit literally everything in one trip to the O Museum. Shopping? Just about everything you find in the decked out rooms is for sale. Games? They have a pool table, pinball tables, and more.... you just have to find them. Get a drink or snack? They have great cocktails. History? Yep! See Rosa Parks' room as well as a room dedicated to John Lennon. This is just a few of the 80 rooms you can see. We were hoping to blitz through them, but it was more fun to stop and look around carefully at all of the interesting things. There was even Judaica! The staff was warm, personable, funny, and helpful. This would be a fantastic experience for kids. There is also an elevator, making most everything handicap accessible. The direction video is also signed and available in multiple directions. They thought of everything! I couldn't recommend this highly enough. I couldn't believe they also have rooms available for reservation. Someday, I hope to do this.”

We arrived around 7:30 pm and spent several hours in the mansion, searching for secret doors and exploring all the eclectic rooms. After the museum closed at 9 pm, we had the entire museum to ourselves. We helped ourselves to the honor bar, played games and billiards, and did more exploring. There are 70 hidden doors, but most that tour only find a small fraction of them. The Rosa Parks room was fantastic, to actually be in a space that she lived for over 10 years was epic. The entire mansion feels like a huge thrift/antique store. It has a ton of books, toys, dishes, you name it. The space is fantastic. It is a lot of walking and a lot of stairs, although you can take the elevator to each floor. Overall this was the most enjoyable tour we took while visiting the Nation's Capital.”

Some doors are bound to be accidentally revealed to you when other people are also looking around, but it's no big deal. Would definitely bring a group back here to do this as a team building exercise or something with some friends. Also, highkey want to find more doors. If you're ever in DC or Alexandria, definitely check this place out. The seeming randomness of it this place is experience enough, and on top of that, you may really enjoy it!”

My relatives were in town visiting from TX and while they had already seen all the monuments, museums, and other historical treasures of DC, I still wanted to do something unique and fun in the city. The Mansion on O Street was perfect!! It's not the typical example of a museum or mansion that would come to your mind but if you want something that everyone can do together and laugh about afterwards try The Mansion on O Street! Yes, the rooms are crowded with anything and everything and most of the time you have no idea where you are but that adds to the fun! Good luck finding the hidden doors because that's not an easy task but if you want a wholesome adventure for the whole family while supporting artists I think this experience will be one for the books. It definitely was with our family! As a side note, I personally wouldn't be comfortable staying in the guest rooms; too much clutter and the fact that so many people had walked through my hotel room all day long wouldn't thrill me.

I have rarely written a review that I was so excited about. Our trip to the Mansion was an incredible afternoon of mystery and magic. It began with the sleuth hunt to find as many of the 70 hidden doors that we could, while prowling around 30,000 sq ft of incredibly outfitted bedrooms and bathrooms. The artwork, the prized guitar collection, and the vast array of memorabilia was like walking through a time machine of "stuff". And...its all for sale. We found 2 treasures we had to take home. But, that was only the beginning, the magic was yet to come. The Show, by Master Magician Rich Bloch was about to begin in a small intimate venue - perfect for magic. The magic was truly amazing - I was even part of the act - but that was only part of it. Rich's delivery was so well done and so amusing that it literally left me in tears of laughter. I have seen a number of other magic shows, but for sheer entertainment value this was the best. Come, take the house tour, have a cocktail, catch the show, enjoy!

• Cleanliness

My wife and I love to experience weird, local culture when we visit a place. And while the Mansion on O Street might technically fit into that category, it was a profound disappointment. First, the pros: Yes there are human-sized, secret doors and passageways. This is extremely cool. If you are a fan of Baby Boomer culture (Beatles and 60s/70s rock play a large part here) you might enjoy seeing some pop culture artifacts like signed guitars. The hosts were extremely friendly and engaging. The cons: It's not a mansion, it's an ex-mansion - stripped of all its original historical and architectural beauty - connected to a series of buildings...all of which have been transformed into a cluttered, fractured nightmare. There are literally piles of stuff in every corner, hallway, staircase, bedroom, shower and alcove. And "stuff" is being generous. It's like someone tried to cram a trashy antique mall into a large house. I was stunned that people actually want to sleep/live in this space cluttered with so much bad art, overpriced tchotchkes, Chinese knockoff products... but then again we paid to get in and look at this mess so I guess the joke's on us. I don't begrudge anyone their dreams. If your dream is to have 17 crappy paintings above your shower, great. If your dream is to fill a room with random resale-shop items until that room overflows into a hallway, super. But don't charge people money to come and look at it. Spend your money elsewhere in DC. There are many mansions that have been preserved or restored you can visit, many art museums that are free or low-cost that have actual art with historical significance. And if you're ever in Wisconsin and you want to see a TRULY weird & local house, I invite you to visit The House on the Rock which has a lot of the same qualities as Mansion on O Street but doesn't pretend to be anything but an eccentric's obsessive collection of random objects.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you missed seeing many of our gems like Bob Dylan’s guitar when he was inducted into the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, Miss USA's Crown, a Grateful Dead Rock Hall Induction Trophy, Prince's Purple Rain Jacket, the flag that flew over Merrill Lynch during 9-11, an original letter written by John Lennon, or Mrs. Rosa Parks room (she stayed with us whenever she visited for 10 years). We understand we have a LOT of things to look at and maybe that is not your style — but perhaps it would help you to know the majority of what you see has been donated by our neighbors, friends, and members who open their hearts and give us things to sell in support of our museum programs including Artists-in-Residence and Heroes. These programs support all those who are giving of themselves to serve others so it makes it especially joyful to see people find and connect with our eclectic exhibits. Normally when you go to Washington DC you see the usual. The Air and Space Museum. The Lincoln Memorial. Congress. Arlington National Cemetery. Looking for something different? Check out the The Mansion on O Street. It's a combination of hotel, pop culture, museum, and discovery zone all in one. The key is to try and find all the hidden doors and cubbyholes. We found less than 10. There are supposed to be 70. I'm guessing there are a lot of small hidden objects (not behind pictures, not under carpets, etc). Plenty of chandeliers. Lots of books. Eclectic doesn't even describe what we have here. We had a grand time and would come back again. We might even rent the wine cellar/dining room.

The Mansion on O Street is unique. It is a hotel, meeting space, and entertainment venue all rolled into a living museum in which virtually every item in the place is for sale. If the staff was so courteous and so very helpful, the place could be a bit overwhelming. But I tell you what- you won’t forget your visit there. Be it a stay in one of the hotel rooms, for a small concert or Magic show, or for one of the occasional weekend brunches. Recently, we brought 9 friends with us to a Monday night event that included martinis and a magic show. What a blast! We had so much fun. Check out the Mansion on O on your next visit to DC. Our History

Located in our Nation's Capital, The O is located in a series of five interconnected town houses that includes over 100 rooms and over 70 secret doors.

Designed in 1892 by Edward Clark, architect for the US Capitol two centuries ago, the buildings were interconnected and served as a home for himself, his brother James "Champ" Clark, Speaker of the House (during Teddy Roosevelt's Presidency), and a third brother, known as "the artist." Additional plans to replace the side garden with an adjoining home for their sister never came to fruition, although the archway to her house was one brick away from "being there".

Originally spanning three row houses (it now spans five), the residence was connected through the basement and main floor and contained separate sleeping quarters for each brother upstairs. As one of the last architects working on the U.S. Capitol between the 19th & 20th century, Clark incorporated left over tiles and wood from the Capitol into his new home - rich in detail, these items and detailed woodworking by August Grass (who also worked on the Heinrich Mansion) can still be found there today. A testament to the fine craftsmanship, it is believed to be the last, virtually intact, private residence of that period in Washington, D.C.

In the 1930's the home was converted into three separate rooming houses for FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover's G-men. To combat the rise of organized crime, outlaws, and gangsters J. Edgar Hoover formed the Federal Bureau of Investigation. These new agents became known by the name G-men (short for "Government Man"). Their operations were covert and the agents were so little known that they were often confused with Secret Service or Prohibition Bureau agents.

In the 1960's, the student leaders of the protest movement lived at 2020 O Street now home to O Street Museum. Norman Mailer wrote about them - and the house - in his book "Armies of the Night".

From 1977 to 1990 "America’s Black Forum", a nationally syndicated news broadcast, & "Sounds of the City", a black radio series both recorded at 2016 O St. "America’s Black Forum" is one of the longest running U.S. syndicated television series and is now produced and recorded at TV One.

UniWorld Group, Inc., (the parent company of Uniworld Entertainment, UniWorld Hispanic and UniWorld Healthcare) run by Walker Williams and Byron Lewis was also housed in 2016 O St. until it was sold to us and reconnected to the original buildings in 1990.  Walker was a Mansion on O Street Board Member for over 30 years.  

On February 14, 1980 the property was purchased by H.H. Leonards, with the intent to restore its original character by reconnecting the row houses. In 1985, nearly a century after its original construction, she transformed the garden site into a unique five-story companion annex - completing the Clarks' dream.

A resident of The Mansion and supporter of O Street for over a decade - Mrs. Parks was a mother figure and mentor to Founder, H.H. Leonards. She entertained friends, dignitaries and guests while she was with us and hosted a Sunday gospel brunch each month. You can see her room on the third floor along with many of her signed letters and artifacts in the museum collection.

In the spring of 1999, Jay Bothwell- architect, developer and good neighbor of The Mansion- donated marble pieces from the Washington Monument construction project that was going on at that time. These pieces can be found in the back of The Mansion.

Today, the property consists of more than 100 rooms of varying architectural, artistic and design periods, from the Victorian Age to Art Deco/Avant Garde. Highlights include hand painted ceilings (so you look up, and out of your self), original Tiffany stained glass windows, a two-story Log Cabin and the secluded Art Deco penthouse with private elevator.

Most of the artifacts in the collection - the signed guitars, memorabilia, documents, letters and more - have been donated by their original owners who support The Museum's mission and stay at The Mansion.

The best thing about any art form is that it provides an outlet to get your thoughts and ideas into the open. But the rewards of art don't stop with the creative process, for art is an expression of love that has a lasting effect. This effect is felt not just in the giving and receiving, but in the telling, the creating-and in the freedom to express one's feelings.

The O Street Museum Foundation was created for everyone to share and collaborate within - and then go out into the world, where anything is possible, and dreams can be made real.

People are often afraid to approach art (and we use the word in the broadest of terms to include one of the greatest forms of art, scientific discovery) because they feel inadequate and inferior to the "artist" and/or artistic creation. But as raw music demonstrates (the process the artist takes before it hits the air waves), art is the result of hard work and devotion to the process.

Mrs. Rosa Parks, The Mother of The Civil Rights Movement & The O

Mrs. Parks’ story, legacy, and connection to African American history in Washington, D.C. is little known — and yet, critical to the work she did. From 1994 to 2004 The Mansion on O and the O Street Museum was the place Mrs. Rosa Parks called her home-away-from-home.

On December 1, 1955, with one simple act, Mrs. Parks changed the world. She helped spark the civil rights movement by refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated Montgomery, Alabama bus. That simple act of courage made her one of the most important women in American history. A woman of few words, her action forever – and positively – impacted the lives of people all over the globe.

While Mrs. Rosa Parks was with us she met with dignitaries, heads-of-state, and leaders, including President Clinton, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Benjamin Hooks, and Dorothy Height here. Close friends of Mrs. Parks stayed with her while she was living with us, including Cicely Tyson, Mamie Till, Miles Davis, Angela Bassett, Artis Lane and her closest friend Mrs. Elaine Steele, Executive Director of The Rosa and Raymond Parks Pathways to Freedom, in Detroit, Michigan.

Mrs. Parks passed away on the 24th of October 2005 in her Detroit apartment. Her body laid in state at the Capitol Rotunda, the first woman to have ever been given this honour. She became the first African American woman to be honored with a life-size statue in the Capitol.

O Museum In The Mansion is a historic site on The African American Heritage Trail which identifies sites that are important in local and national history and culture. It recognizes the people and places that have shaped Washington, DC. A plaque commemorating Mrs. Parks was recently installed and can be seen when you visit.

Taylor Swift’s 2024 Eras Tour Setlist Features A Huge Change-Up

It’s me, hi, I’m the setlist, it’s me — and welcome to the Eras Tour , again . Taylor Swift resumed her record-breaking Eras Tour in Paris, France, on May 9, and it came with quite the twist. For the first time in the tour’s run, the singer significantly upheaved her setlist , rearranging the order of the show’s ten acts representing her landmark studio albums to squeeze in a new era.

As fans have suspected for months, Swift added a whole new section to the show including songs from her latest album The Tortured Poets Department , all of which are being performed live for the first time. Understandably, Swift had to cut a good number of songs, including “The Archer” and “Long Live,” to add seven Tortured Poets tracks into her show’s usual run time of three-and-a-half hours.

She’s also changed the running order of the eras significantly. While she started with the Lover era and transitioned into Fearless as usual, she then went into the Red era sooner than expected. ( Evermore usually had followed the Fearless act.) She even combined the Folklore and Evermore eras into one act. (They’ve always been called “sister albums” after all).

Swift has made the occasional change on the road, like switching out her Folklore track “invisible string” for “the 1,” adding “Long Live” to the Speak Now act, and performing “Nothing New” and “no body, no crime” at shows where duet partners Phoebe Bridgers and HAIM opened for her. How to complete the secret compassion task in ‘gray zone warfare’.

Solving this task is all about finding these boxes.

As you start to work your way through the early tasks in Gray Zone Warfare there is one that sticks out as a complete pain in the backside, and is Secret Compassion. Fortunately, if you know where you are going this task is fairly easy to complete, especially for owners of the more expensive editions.

The Secret Compassion task in Gray Zone Warfare is given to you by Lab Rat and tasks you with dropping supplies at three different locations around your starting town. When you accept the task Lab Rat will give you three boxes of supplies, which are each 2x2 in size, and you must take them with you when you leave the base in order to place them.

My advice, unless you are speedrunning, is to take one box of supplies with you at a time and keep it in your secure container. This way if you die before dropping the supplies in the right place you will keep them and won’t have to buy another. If you do lose one of the boxes of supplies you can buy another from Lab Rat for $50.

Once you have the supplies you will need to head to the correct locations to place them. There are three buildings on the outskirts of each of the starter towns, two farms and a logging shed, that have small stands outside them. You can see what the stand looks like in the images below, and this is where you need to place the supplies. As soon as you place it that portion of the task is complete and the supplies are removed from your inventory.

The second location for the Secret Compassion task.

Mortgage Fraudster Who Served 13 Years in $55M Scheme Now Helps Fight Scammers

In the late ’90s, Matthew Cox was 29 and starting a new job as a mortgage broker in Tampa, FL, when he committed his first act of mortgage fraud by erasing a borrower’s late payment history from a loan application.

His schemes multiplied quickly. From doctoring loan application information for clients, he went on to mastermind an elaborate series of schemes involving stolen and fabricated identities, phony appraisals, home title theft , and mortgage frauds totaling some $55 million in illicit gains.

After a stint on the Secret Service’s Most Wanted List and the national notoriety of a “Dateline” episode about his crimes, it all came crashing down on Cox with an arrest, guilty plea, and prison sentence in 2007.

While serving time in federal prison, Cox agreed to help the government train mortgage brokers and loan officers to spot potential fraud. Following his release in 2019, he hosts a true-crime podcast, “ Inside True Crime .” He also works as a paid spokesman for Home Title Lock, a company that monitors for deed fraud and helps homeowners respond.

In a recent phone interview with Realtor.com®, Cox said he regrets the disruption and expense his crimes generated in the lives of the everyday homeowners who fell victim to his identity theft and forgery schemes.

“That’s something that bothers me,” says Cox, now 54.

In one case, while he was on the run from the FBI, Cox stole the identity of his landlord in the Atlanta suburbs and filed forged documents claiming that the mortgage on the home had been satisfied. Using the landlord’s stolen identity, Cox then took out three new loans against the property totaling $329,000, maxed out credit cards he’d also opened under the stolen identity, and skipped town.

“Let’s face it, if Countrywide Bank lost $2 million … I don’t lose an ounce of sleep,” he says. “But [the Georgia landlord] didn’t do anything to deserve what happened to him. The biggest mistake he made was crossing my path.”

Ultimately, the landlord wasn’t on the hook for the fraudulent loans in his name, Cox says, but straightening out the mess probably caused him “two months of sleepless nights” and significant legal fees.

“I’m sure that the anxiety that he felt was overwhelming, and he’s just one of several people that that happened to,” says Cox of the fallout from his crimes.

From art student to con artist

Cox grew up in Florida and studied sculpture at the University of South Florida, where he graduated with a degree in fine arts.

After bouncing around several entry-level jobs without much success, he landed at a Tampa mortgage brokerage that catered to prospective homebuyers with subprime credit scores.

There, Cox was tasked with preparing loan applications for customers and matching them with a loan for which they qualified. In exchange, he charged a broker’s fee—and sometimes took points on the loan for charging borrowers a higher interest rate than the lowest for which they qualified.

That practice, known as a “yield spread premium,” has since been banned by federal regulation.

Raking in thousands in fees on every successful mortgage deal, Cox turned to fraud almost immediately. To ensure his clients’ loan applications were accepted, he began forging documents such as employment records and bank statements.

Eventually, Cox was creating entirely fictional identities, along with fake companies to employ them and phony banks to generate account statements.

“The fine arts degree helped me create the illusions that I used to further my scams, whether it was the illusion that this person was a real individual, or he had a bank where he had accounts,” recalls Cox. “It helped me create documents, anything to support what I needed in order to get a loan from a bank.”

Cox was first convicted of low-level mortgage fraud in 2002 and sentenced to probation. But after being caught once, his schemes only grew larger and more elaborate.

“Instead of doing the right thing and going and getting a job selling used cars, I committed a much larger fraud,” he says. “It was a combination of identity theft, title theft, and bank fraud.”

A scammer repents

In 2004, Cox went on the run after again coming under investigation for mortgage fraud in Tampa. After a fraud spree spanning Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina, he was arrested in late 2006 in Nashville, TN.

Facing more than 400 years in prison, he negotiated a plea deal. His original sentence of 26 years in prison was eventually cut in half, due to his cooperation in a separate case and his agreement to help create fraud training materials for the federal government. Cox was released from prison in 2019 after serving nearly 13 years.

Since his guilty plea, Cox says he’s reformed and has turned his unusual talents to fighting fraud. Through Home Title Lock, he promotes a vital defense against the type of deed scams he used to perpetrate.

“This is going to sound like a shameless pitch, but have your title monitored,” he says when asked what homeowners can do to protect themselves from deed fraud. “They will help you contact the authorities so that you can specifically explain what happened, and they’ll hire a real estate attorney in your area to correct the problem.”

Home Title Lock, which costs $20 per month, is a service that monitors property titles for any transfers, and handles the legal fees involved in resolving any fraudulent transfer.

However, a growing number of U.S. counties and cities allow homeowners to sign up for free title monitoring. And the right kind of title insurance, which requires only a one-time fee, will handle the legal side of responding to title fraud.

Home Title Lock, which is marketed heavily to seniors, has come under scrutiny in several jurisdictions, including in Texas, where in January 2023 the attorney general’s office opened a civil investigation into the company for potentially misleading consumers.

“If Home Title Lock is misrepresenting its services or the need for its services, I will put a stop to its unlawful behavior,” said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in a statement at the time. It’s unclear whether that investigation is ongoing. Paxton’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

On the other hand, David Fleck , a real estate fraud attorney, tells Realtor.com that Home Title Lock deserves credit for raising public awareness about home title theft “better than any government-issued public service announcement ever could.”

“Every property owner in the United States needs to be aware of how easy it is to file fraudulent deeds,” says Fleck in an email. “As a former prosecutor who has battled this crime since 2003, I can tell you that every homeowner owes the founder of Home Title Lock, Harish Chopra , a debt of gratitude.”

Fleck, the founder of another deed fraud prevention service called Veritable Data Solutions, says that title monitoring of some kind should be “mandatory” for elderly relatives with in-home caregivers.

“The vast overwhelming majority of caregivers are good people, but as in any population, there are some unscrupulous characters, and they are often the people you least suspect,” says Fleck. “A title monitoring service, whether provided by the county or by Home Title Lock, will give you some peace of mind about your elderly relative’s property (i.e., your inheritance).”

Cox himself admits that title monitoring alone cannot prevent scammers from filing a fraudulent deed in the first place.

“With your credit, you can lock your credit so that nobody can pull it. You can’t do that with a title. … They can’t lock it down,” he says. “As long as the [forged] document looks correct, and it’s notarized and all the signatures are in the right spot, they have to record it. There’s nothing they can do.”

Money saving trends are constantly popping up on social media - but one in particular has been gaining huge amounts of attention.

Created accidentally by a comedian, loud budgeting is breaking down the taboo of speaking about money.

The idea is based on being firmer/more vocal about your financial boundaries in social situations and setting out what you are happy to spend your money on, instead of "Keeping up with the Joneses". 

On TikTok alone, videos published under the hashtag #loudbudgeting have garnered more than 30 million views - and that figure is continuing to climb. 

We spoke to Lukas Battle - the 26-year-old who unintentionally created the trend as part of a comedy sketch. 

Based in New York, he came up with the term in a skit about the "quiet luxury" hype, which had spread online in 2023 inspired by shows like Succession. 

The term was used for humble bragging about your wealth with expensive items that were subtle in their design - for example, Gwyneth Paltrow's  £3,900 moss green wool coat from The Row, which she wore during her ski resort trial...

"I was never a big fan of the quiet luxury trend, so I just kind of switched the words and wrote 'loud budgeting is in'. I'm tired of spending money and I don't want to pretend to be rich," Lukas said. 

"That's how it started and then the TikTok comments were just obsessed with that original idea." 

This was the first time he mentioned it...

Lukas explained that it wasn't about "being poor" but about not being afraid of sharing your financial limits and "what's profitable for you personally". 

"It's not 'skip a coffee a day and you'll become a millionaire'."

While talking money has been seen as rude or taboo, he said it's something his generation is more comfortable doing. 

"I've seen more debate around the topic and I think people are really intrigued and attracted by the idea," he said. 

"It's just focusing your spending and time on things you enjoy and cutting out the things you might feel pressured to spend your money on."  

He has incorporated loud budgeting into his own life, telling his friends "it's free to go outside" and opting for cheaper dinner alternatives.

"Having the terminology and knowing it's a trend helps people understand it and there's no awkward conversation around it," he said. 

The trend has been a big hit with so-called American "finfluencers", or "financial influencers", but people in the UK have started practising it as well. 

Mia Westrap has taken up loud budgeting by embarking on a no-buy year and sharing her finances with her 11.3k TikTok followers. 

Earning roughly £2,100 a month, she spends around £1,200 on essentials, like rent, petrol and car insurance, but limits what else she can purchase. 

Clothes, fizzy drinks, beauty treatments, makeup, dinners out and train tickets are just some things on her "red list". 

The 26-year-old PHD student first came across the idea back in 2017, but decided to take up the challenge this year after realising she was living "pay check to pay check". 

She said her "biggest fear" in the beginning was that her friends wouldn't understand what she was doing, but she found loud budgeting helped. 

"I'm still trying my best to just go along with what everyone wants to do but I just won't spend money while we do it and my friends don't mind that, we don't make a big deal out of it," she said. 

So far, she has been able to save £1,700, and she said talking openly about her money has been "really helpful". 

"There's no way I could have got this far if I wasn't baring my soul to the internet about the money I have spent. It has been a really motivating factor."

Financial expert John Webb said loud budgeting has the ability to help many "feel empowered" and create a "more realistic" relationship with money.

"This is helping to normalise having open and honest conversations about finances," the consumer affair manager at Experien said. 

"It can also reduce the anxiety some might have by keeping their financial worries to themselves." 

However, he warned it's important to be cautious and to take the reality of life into consideration. 

"It could cause troubles within friendship groups if they're not on the same page as you or have different financial goals," he said.

"This challenge isn't meant to stop you from having fun, but it is designed to help people become more conscious and intentional when it comes to money, and reduce the stigma around talking about it." 

Rightmove's keyword tool shows Victorian-era houses are the most commonly searched period properties, with people drawn to their ornate designs and features.

Georgian and Edwardian-style are second and third respectively, followed by Tudor properties. Regency ranked in fifth place.

Rightmove property expert Tim Bannister said: "Home hunters continue to be captivated by the character and charm of properties that we see in period dramas.

"Victorian homes remain particularly popular, characterised by their historic charm, solid construction, and spacious interiors. You'll often find Victorian houses in some of the most desirable locations which include convenient access to schools and transport links."

Executive chef at London's two-Michelin-starred Ikoyi, Jeremy Chan, raised eyebrows when he suggested to the Money blog that Britons don't pay enough for restaurant food.

Ikoyi, the 35th best restaurant in the world, charges £320 for its tasting menu. 

"I don't think people pay enough money for food, I think we charge too little, [but] we want to always be accessible to as many people as possible, we're always trying our best to do that," he said, in a piece about his restaurant's tie up with Uber Eats...

From Sunday, eligible working parents of children from nine-months-old in England will be able to register for access to up to 15 free hours of government-funded childcare per week.

This will then be granted from September.

Three and four year olds

In England, all parents of children aged three and four in England can claim 15 hours of free childcare per week, for 1,140 hours (38 weeks) a year, at an approved provider.

This is a universal offer open to all.

It can be extended to 30 hours where both parents (or the sole parent) are in work, earn the weekly minimum equivalent of 16 hours at the national minimum or living wage, and have an income of less than £100,000 per year.

Two year olds

Previously, only parents in receipt of certain benefits were eligible for 15 hours of free childcare.

But, as of last month, this was extended to working parents.

This is not a universal offer, however.

A working parent must earn more than £8,670 but less than £100,000 per year. For couples, the rule applies to both parents.

Nine months old

In September, this same 15-hour offer will be extended to working parents of children aged from nine months. From 12 May, those whose children will be at least nine months old on 31 August can apply to received the 15 hours of care from September.

From September 2025

The final change to the childcare offer in England will be rolled out in September 2025, when eligible working parents of all children under the age of five will be able to claim 30 hours of free childcare a week.

In some areas of Wales, the Flying Start early years programme offers 12.5 hours of free childcare for 39 weeks, for eligible children aged two to three. The scheme is based on your postcode area, though it is currently being expanded.

All three and four-year-olds are entitled to free early education of 10 hours per week in approved settings during term time under the Welsh government's childcare offer.

Some children of this age are entitled to up to 30 hours per week of free early education and childcare over 48 weeks of the year. The hours can be split - but at least 10 need to be used on early education.

To qualify for this, each parent must earn less than £100,000 per year, be employed and earn at least the equivalent of working 16 hours a week at the national minimum wage, or be enrolled on an undergraduate, postgraduate or further education course that is at least 10 weeks in length.

All three and four-year-olds living in Scotland are entitled to at least 1,140 hours per year of free childcare, with no work or earnings requirements for parents. 

This is usually taken as 30 hours per week over term time (38 weeks), though each provider will have their own approach.

Some households can claim free childcare for two-year-olds. To be eligible you have to be claiming certain benefits such as Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance or Universal Credit, or have a child that is in the care of their local council or living with you under a guardianship order or kinship care order.

Northern Ireland

There is no scheme for free childcare in Northern Ireland. Some other limited support is available.

Working parents can access support from UK-wide schemes such as tax credits, Universal Credit, childcare vouchers and tax-free childcare.

Aside from this, all parents of children aged three or four can apply for at least 12.5 hours a week of funded pre-school education during term time. But over 90% of three-year-olds have a funded pre-school place - and of course this is different to childcare.

What other help could I be eligible for?

Tax-free childcare  - Working parents in the UK can claim up to £500 every three months (up to £2,000 a year) for each of their children to help with childcare costs. 

If the child is disabled, the amount goes up to £1,000 every three months (up to £4,000 a year).

To claim the benefit, parents will need to open a tax-free childcare account online. For every 80p paid into the account, the government will top it up by 20p.

The scheme is available until the September after the child turns 11.

Universal credit  - Working families on universal credit can claim back up to 85% of their monthly childcare costs, as long as the care is paid for upfront. The most you can claim per month is £951 for one child or £1,630 for two or more children.

Tax credits -  People claiming working tax credit can get up to 70% of what they pay for childcare if their costs are no more than £175 per week for one child or £300 per work for multiple children.

Two big economic moments dominated the news agenda in Money this week - interest rates and GDP.

As expected, the Bank of England held the base rate at 5.25% on Wednesday - but a shift in language was instructive about what may happen next.

Bank governor Andrew Bailey opened the door to a summer cut to 5%, telling reporters that an easing of rates at the next Monetary Policy Committee meeting on 20 June was neither ruled out nor a fait accompli.

More surprisingly, he suggested that rate cuts, when they start, could go deeper "than currently priced into market rates".

He refused to be drawn on what that path might look like - but markets had thought rates could bottom out at 4.5% or 4.75% this year, and potentially 3.5% or 4% next.

"To make sure that inflation stays around the 2% target - that inflation will neither be too high nor too low - it's likely that we will need to cut Bank rate over the coming quarters and make monetary policy somewhat less restrictive over the forecast period," Mr Bailey said.

On Friday we discovered the UK is no longer in recession.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.6% between January and March, the Office for National Statistics said.

This followed two consecutive quarters of the economy shrinking.

The data was more positive than anticipated.

"Britain is not just out of recession," wrote Conway. "It is out of recession with a bang."

The UK has seen its fastest growth since the tailend of the pandemic - and Conway picked out three other reasons for optimism.

1/ An economic growth rate of 0.6% is near enough to what economists used to call "trend growth". It's the kind of number that signifies the economy growing at more or less "normal" rates.

2/ 0.6% means the UK is, alongside Canada, the fastest-growing economy in the G7 (we've yet to hear from Japan, but economists expect its economy to contract in the first quarter).

3/ Third, it's not just gross domestic product that's up. So too is gross domestic product per head - the number you get when you divide our national income by every person in the country. After seven years without any growth, GDP per head rose by 0.4% in the first quarter.

GDP per head is a more accurate yardstick for the "feelgood factor", said Conway - perhaps meaning people will finally start to feel better off.

Loaves of bread have been recalled from shelves in Japan after they were found to contain the remains of a rat.

Production of the bread in Tokyo has been halted after parts of a "small animal" were found by at least two people.

Pasco Shikishima Corp, which produces the bread, said 104,000 packages have been recalled as it apologised and promised compensation.

A company representative told Sky News's US partner network, NBC News, that a "small black rat" was found in the bread. No customers were reported to have fallen ill as a result of ingesting the contaminated bread.

"We deeply apologise for the serious inconvenience and trouble this has caused to our customers, suppliers, and other concerned parties," the spokesman said.

Pasco added in a separate statement that "we will do our utmost to strengthen our quality controls so that this will never happen again. We ask for your understanding and your co-operation."

Japanese media reports said at least two people who bought the bread in the Gunma prefecture, north-west of Tokyo, complained to the company about finding a rodent in the bread.

Record levels of shoplifting appear to be declining as fewer shopkeepers reported thefts last year, new figures show. 

A survey by the Office for National Statistics shows 26% of retailers experienced customer theft in 2023, down from a record high of 28% in 2022.

This comes despite a number of reports suggesting shoplifting is becoming more frequent. 

A  separate ONS finding , which used police crime data, showed reports of shoplifting were at their highest level in 20 years in 2023, with law enforcements logging 430,000 instances of the crime.

A privately owned used-car platform is circling Cazoo Group, its stricken US-listed rival, which is on the brink of administration.

Sky News has learnt that Motors.co.uk is a leading contender to acquire Cazoo's marketplace operation, which would include its brand and intellectual property assets.

The process to auction the used-car platform's constituent parts comes after it spent tens of millions of pounds on sponsorship deals in football, snooker and darts in a rapid attempt to gain market share.

The owner of British Airways has reported a sharp rise in profits amid soaring demand for trips and a fall in the cost of fuel.

International Airlines Group said its operating profit for the first three months of the year was €68m (£58.5m) - above expectations and up from €9m (£7.7m) during the same period in 2023.

The company, which also owns Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling, said earnings had soared thanks to strong demand, particularly over the Easter holidays.

The prospect of a strike across Tata Steel's UK operations has gained further traction after a key union secured support for industrial action.

Community, which has more than 3,000 members, said 85% voted in favour of fighting the India-owned company's plans for up to 2,800 job losses, the majority of them at the country's biggest steelworks in Port Talbot, South Wales.

Tata confirmed last month it was to press ahead with the closure of the blast furnaces at the plant, replacing them with electric arc furnaces to reduce emissions and costs.

In doing so, the company rejected an alternative plan put forward by the Community, GMB and Unite unions that, they said, would raise productivity and protect jobs across the supply chain.

At a private donor event, Trump likens the Biden administration to the 'Gestapo'

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Donald Trump compared President Joe Biden’s administration to the secret police force of Nazi Germany in remarks at a private, closed-door donor retreat on Saturday afternoon.

The former president’s comments came as he was talking about his legal troubles, attacking the prosecutors in the cases and bemoaning the recent indictments in Arizona of several of his former top aides, along with 11 so-called fake electors from the 2020 election.

“These people are running a Gestapo administration,” Trump said, according to audio of the luncheon provided to NBC News. “And it’s the only thing they have. And it’s the only way they’re going to win in their opinion.”

“Once I got indicted, I said, well, now the gloves have to come off,” Trump added, saying Biden is “the worst president in the history of our country. He’s grossly incompetent. He’s crooked as hell. He’s the Manchurian candidate."

The former president added that he doesn’t let his legal troubles bother him too much.

“If you care too much, you tend to choke. And in a way, I don’t care. It’s just you know, life is life,” he said.

He did admit, however, that he was surprised when he was indicted.

“Once I got indicted, I said, ‘Holy s---, I just got indicted. Me. I got indicted,’” Trump said.

He also called Jack Smith, the special counsel prosecuting two federal cases against Trump, an "evil thug" and "deranged."

Biden campaign spokesperson James Singer slammed Trump and the retreat as underscoring that the former president's campaign "is about him. His fury, his revenge, his lies, and his retribution."

"Trump is once again making despicable and insulting comments about the Holocaust, while in the same breath attacking law enforcement, celebrating political violence, and threatening our democracy," Singer added later in the statement.

Trump made his remarks at his Mar-a-Lago Club on Saturday afternoon, as hundreds of donors are gathered down here for the Republican National Committee’s spring retreat.

The former president has had limited time to campaign as he's had to spend four days a week sitting in a Manhattan courtroom for his criminal trial there, related to hush money payments to an adult film star around the 2016 election.

Among the featured guests at the retreat this weekend are a number of potential vice presidential candidates , including Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem.

Trump has yet to move past the early stages of vetting a running mate, as NBC News has reported. Top contenders have not yet received detailed questionnaires or other requests for information to help finalize a shortlist.

At the luncheon, Trump brought all these guests onstage — except Noem, who left early, according to two people in attendance — along with a number of other elected officials, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La.

“By the end of it, there were a lot of people onstage,” one Republican source who attended the luncheon told NBC News.

Trump, according to the audio recording, praised Stefanik for her role in challenging former Harvard University President Claudine Gay, who resigned after facing scrutiny for testimony she gave at a congressional hearing on campus antisemitism and after allegations of plagiarism in her academic work.

“You destroyed her,” Trump said. “She did so well, everyone said … she’s going to be the vice presidential candidate.”

Vance, who had been a prominent Trump critic in 2016 while promoting his “Hillbilly Elegy” memoir, “turned out to be incredible,” the former president said. The senator is scheduled to hold a fundraiser with Trump this month in Ohio.

“You know he wasn’t a supporter of mine,” Trump said of Vance. “He was saying things like, ‘The guy’s a total disaster!’”

Scott, whose campaign for the GOP presidential nomination fizzled before the Iowa caucuses, “did a good job,” Trump said. “But as a surrogate He’s unbelievable.”

“And you know what he said to me? He said, ‘I never felt comfortable talking about myself.’ There’s something nice about that. It never bothered me to talk about me. I’m the opposite.”

Trump also acknowledged Rubio and Donalds, his potential VP picks from Florida, where he also resides. The Constitution prohibits electors from voting for both a president and a vice president from their own states.

Rubio, Trump said, is “a talented guy” and “absolutely” being considered, “even though we do have a little problem. It’s a minor Florida problem with these Florida guys, I have to be honest with you — including that guy right there, Byron.”

Burgum, a former software entrepreneur who became the first of Trump’s high-profile rivals to endorse him, drew raves for his personal wealth.

“He’s a very rich man, he’s made a lot of money,” Trump said. “I would always say, ‘That guy’s really impressive.’”

Trump also offered a shoutout to Noem, though she did not make it to the stage, calling the South Dakota governor — who has been under fire since revealing in a forthcoming book that she shot and killed a family dog — “somebody that I love.”

“She’s been with me, and a supporter, and I’ve been a supporter of hers for a long time,” Trump added.

Trump also said he’d allow anyone who donated $1 million on the spot to come up to the stage. Two people took him up on the offer, including one woman who declared: “Donald J. Trump is the person that God has chosen.”
