What travelers say about our Canada tours
Travel tips for canada trips.
These are some of the sites you won’t want to miss:
- Banff National Park , home to beautiful landscapes rich in history, wildlife, and vibrant colors
- Lake Louise , where perfectly turquoise water greets every visitor
- Vancouver , a bustling cosmopolitan city on the water
Check out 5 unforgettable experiences you can have in the Canadian Rockies .
There’s no bad time for a trip to Canada, but our favorite time is from September through November. Throughout these months, the weather is cool, but still comfortable, and the foliage is absolutely stunning. In fact, if you’re seeking some leaf peeping, you’ll love our Fall Foliage Tour of the Canadian Maritime s.
If you’re traveling to Canada in the summer, you’ll want to pack sunscreen and a lot of layers, because the weather can vary between around 50 and 95°F. If you’re traveling further north it will be cooler. Up north, you’ll also experience exceptionally long days, so bring a sleep mask, too. If you’re looking to travel to Canada in the spring, fall, or winter, you’ll want to pack a lot of warm layers. It can get chilly walking along the glacial lakes and mountain trails!
As you plan any Canada tour, remember that while Canada has many similarities to the United States, it’s still a different country. That means you’ll need to bring your passport and exchange currencies when booking Canada tour packages from the USA.
Always carry cash. It can be difficult to find credit card machines or ATMs in more rural areas, so you’ll want to make sure you’re covered. Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is expected in the hospitality tourism, and service industries—so you’ll want to be sure you can leave some cash for people who help you, too.
When exploring Canada on a group tour, you’ll meet some incredible new friends as you experience a new country together. Second, our guided tours make it easy to see a country from a local’s perspective. Finally, when you take one of our all-inclusive trips to Canada, we take care of every detail for you. Just show up and have a great time.

Embrace the laid-back lifestyle of Vancouver
Awarded the title of the world’s most liveable city eight times since 2002, Vancouver is a haven of green spaces and mountain views. Explore the lakes, rivers and national parks, or take the ferry to Vancouver Island and Victoria, where you’ll find a slice of Olde England, with traditional houses, gardens and vineyards.
Explore the dramatic mountain wilderness of The Rockies
The Canadian Rockies are one of the most magnificent places on earth. We’ll take you on a journey through towering mountains, dazzling lakes and glittering glaciers, as we explore the natural wonders of The Rockies. From the turquoise waters of Lake Louise to the gorgeous scenery of Spirit Island, The Rockies are truly unforgettable.
Visit Jasper National Park
As the largest national park in Canada, Jasper National Park is a remarkable wilderness, with a wealth of natural treasures. We’ll take you on a specially designed Ice Explorer from the fairytale Athabasca Falls to the sheer limestone cliffs of Maligne Canyon, and to Spirit Island, the soul of Jasper National Park.
Go on an excursion to Moraine Lake
One of the most beautiful places in all of Canada, Moraine Lake is a glacial lake in Banff National Park. It transforms throughout the day, from a mirrored surface to an electric blue colour. We’ll explore its shoreline and take a walk to Rock Pile for incredible views of the Valley of Ten Peaks.
View the traditional kekuli built by people of the First Nations
We’ll show you the real thing on our Canada group tours, with a visit to the village of Chase. You’ll learn about the First Nation Secwepemc people (the Shuswap), and take a walk around their ancestral grounds where you’ll see a traditional kekuli homestead, used to survive the harsh Canadian winters.
Our top 5 things to do in Canada
Our Canada vacation packages include all the highlights, like the mighty Rockies and Moraine Lake, and all the intimate experiences like a visit to the ancestral grounds of the Secwepemc people.
Science World
With a wealth of indoor and outdoor interactive displays and live science demonstrations, Science World is one of the most fun things to do in Vancouver. See the Ken Spencer Science Park, watch incredible films and shows in the Science Theatre, or get lost in the puzzle room.
The Hockey Hall of Fame
Ice hockey is one of the best-loved sports in Canada, and they’ve even dedicated the Hockey Hall of Fame to the sport. With everything from themed exhibits and hockey artefacts, to games that test your hockey skills, this is the best place to learn all things ice hockey.
Redpath Museum
Set in the oldest building in Montreal, originating as a museum in 1882, the Redpath Museum houses an incredible showcase of natural history. You’ll find large collections of dinosaur bones, skeletons, rocks, minerals, gemstones and historic cultural items, all displayed in a grand old building on the McGill University campus.
Best museums in Canada
From live science shows to the complete history of hockey, our Canada vacation tours take you to all the most entertaining museums in the country.
Canada takes French fries to new heights with poutine, a dish of potato French fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy. Originating from Quebec, it’s now the quintessential Canadian snack across the country. The traditional version is delicious, but you can also add extra toppings like bacon and pulled pork.
Timbits & a 'Double Double'
Head to Tim Horton’s to find Canada’s favourite afternoon snack. A Timbit is a bite-sized doughnut ball, which comes in a range of flavours like apple fritter or lemon, while a ‘Double Double’ is a coffee with two cream and two sugars. Combined together, they make a deliciously sweet treat.
Originally hailing from Quebec, Tourtière is a classic meat pie made with minced beef, pork or veal, and potatoes, baked in a delicious pastry crust. It’s traditionally served for celebrations like Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but our Local Specialists will show you where to find it all year round.
Best food in Canada
With a blend of influences from First Nations, French and British cuisines, Canadian food is warm and tasty. We’ll show you our favourite places for a feast of meats, gravy, pies and coffee.

With temperatures ranging from -15°C in winter to 30°C or more in summer, and a range of climates across the country, it’s best to pack versatile clothing for your Canada trip.

#2 Travel tip: Cover more Canada on the train
For first-time visitors to Canada who want to take in as much as possible, a trans-Canada train journey is an ideal trip. Add time in terminal cities, such as Vancouver, Toronto, and Halifax to explore.
1. Daylight Train
The Rocky Mountaineer runs from April to the end of September during daylight hours. It follows this schedule to make the most of the amazing views in the Canadian Rockies. Guests are transferred to hotels for overnight stops, and do not sleep on the train.
2. Passenger Train
VIA Rail is Canada’s main passenger train. It connects the country from Vancouver to Halifax with four major train routes. It offers different classes of train cars. Business class gets lounge access, food and beverage service included, priority boarding, extra luggage and wider, comfortable seating.
3. Sleeper Train
There are two train routes in Canada which allow you to sleep on the train. The first is between Vancouver and Toronto on The Canadian. You can break up this route with stop-overs in Jasper or Winnipeg. The second route with a sleeper train is the Ocean train from Montreal to Halifax. Both sleeper train routes are available all year long. Some sleeper trains in Canada are equipped with special panoramic viewing cars to provide you with the best view of the scenery day or night.
Vancouver to Toronto
VIA Rail’s The Canadian connects Toronto and Vancouver. It stops in Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Jasper. This route can also be travelled in reverse. This train covers a total of 2762 miles, which takes about 86 hours. Enjoy sweeping views in the Panorama car, where giant windows extend up to the ceiling. Travelling from Toronto to Vancouver, the Canadian carries you from the forests of Ontario, through the expanse of the Prairies, and past the dramatic snow-capped Rocky Mountains.
Montreal to Halifax
VIA Rail’s The Ocean train connects Montreal to Halifax. The 839-mile journey takes approximately 21 hours. It has been running since 1904 and is the oldest continuously operated named passenger train in North America. You'll first travel through the French-speaking province of Quebec. Then past a backdrop of lighthouses and seascapes in the Maritime Province of Nova Scotia. As you relax onboard, you'll see tiny communities along your route, representing French Canadian, Acadian, Celtic and English heritage.
Vancouver to the Rockies
Along with a segment of VIA Rail’s The Canadian route, The Rocky Mountaineer runs from Vancouver through the Rockies. There are three different routes to enjoy. The Rainforest to Gold Rush connects North Vancouver and Jasper, with stops in Whistler and Quesnel. The Journey through the Clouds also connects Vancouver to Jasper, but takes the Yellowhead pass, and stops in Kamloops. The First Passage to the West connects Vancouver to Banff, with a stop in Kamloops.

Canadian rockies and west coast.
Western Canada is known for its dramatic wild landscapes. This includes the mountains and glacier lakes of the Canadian Rockies. It also extends to the lush rainforests and Pacific Coastlines of British Columbia. It’s one of Canada’s most popular locations for a train vacation. Many remote areas are only accessible by rail. Spend an extra day or two exploring the city of Vancouver as well.
Across Canada
Make the journey across the country by rail. This coast-to-coast train trip connects Vancouver to Halifax, with stops in major cities, such as Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. If you only have one trip to Canada, this lets you see it all. Highlights include the Atlantic and Pacific coastlines, the Canadian Rockies, and the Prairies.
Eastern Canada and Maritimes
Along with amazing scenery, there’s lots of history and culture to explore in Eastern Canada. Visit the cities of Toronto and Montreal. Add a tour to famous places, like Niagara Falls, and the not-so-famous hidden gems, like the charming fishing towns of the Maritimes. There’s a lot to discover in eastern Canada.
North and Arctic
Taking the train to Churchill is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This community sits on the edge of Hudson Bay. It takes two days and two nights of travelling north on the rails to get there. There are no roads into this subarctic region.

Great road trips define Canada .
Every province and territory can lay claim to a rich selection of magnificent journeys, but at the top of the list are a clutch of big-hitting scene-stealers – epic strips of asphalt doused with glints of only-in-Canada magic. Expect massive glaciers, foraging fauna, stormy coastlines and the kind of raw, uncompromising wilderness that’s rare if you head further south.
In this modern and affluent country, roads are generally wide and well-maintained and drivers are scrupulously polite. However, you can often go a long way without seeing a gas station or decent food, especially in the north, so stock up on supplies and emergency gear.
To sample our favorite road trips in Canada, load up your playlist with Drake, Rush and the Tragically Hip, and kiss the urban traffic snarl-ups goodbye.
![scenic tours of canada Large RV driving along a highway that hugs the edge of a turquoise lake](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2022-12/Canada-Whistler-stockstudioX-GettyImages-464456664-RFC.jpg?auto=format&q=75&w=1920)
1. Sea to Sky Highway, British Columbia
Best road trip for families Vancouver–Whistler; 121km (75 miles); allow 4–5 hours
From the deluxe, hill-hugging homes of West Vancouver to the neo-alpine ski village of Whistler , the Sea to Sky Highway rarely lets you out of its rapture. Comprising the most spectacular section of Hwy 99, which runs for 377km (234 miles) from the US border to Cache Creek, this drive traverses the steep-sided slopes of Howe Sound before contouring north through the Coast Mountains to Whistler.
If you can take your eyes off the collage of peaks, forests and fjords, this winding thoroughfare has many worthy stops, especially if you're in the market for hiking, climbing or mining history. Horseshoe Bay is the city’s main ferry terminal and the starting point for a tough, rocky hike up to Eagle Bluffs for eagle-eye views over Vancouver.
Further north, Britannia Beach is a one-time company town whose former mining facility – now a museum and national historic site – concertinas down a steep hill. The small but growing town of Squamish is an obligatory stop for refueling (get gas at the local Shell station and coffee at the funky Zephyr Cafe ) and a ride on the finest gondola in BC.
Planning tip: Locals fondly recommend an extended stop at Function Junction a few kilometers south of Whistler. You can hike through the forest to a 1950s train wreck that has been turned into an inspirational art project and buy lunch at peerless Purebread , possibly the finest purveyor of baked goods this side of Paris.
Breaking up your drive with a hike or two? Here are 16 of Canada's best trails
![scenic tours of canada A car drives a highway heading towards a mountain with fall foliage in the surrounding woodland](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2020-11/GettyRF_636113862.jpg?auto=format&q=75&w=1920)
2. Icefields Parkway, Alberta
Best road trip for mountains and glaciers Lake Louise–Jasper; 230km (143 miles); allow 5–6 hours
The Icefields Parkway – or the Promanade des Glaciers, as it’s romantically known in French – is the crème de la crème of Canadian drives. This 230km (143-mile) trip links the nation’s two most emblematic national parks, Banff and Jasper , leaving even the most verbose travel writers flailing for adjectives.
Starting near the robin-egg-blue waters of Lake Louise , home to the elegant Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel , the route penetrates north through some of the most elemental scenery on the planet. Giant mountains, craning trees and powerful waterfalls are mere supporting acts to the gargantuan glaciers and abundant wildlife, which gets even more copious as you approach Jasper.
You'll pass a litany of potential stops en route, many offering access to superb viewpoints and short interpretive hikes. Headliners include cerulean Peyto Lake , Jasper’s “hanging” Skywalk and the Athabasca Glacier – a frozen tributary of the colossal Columbia Icefield.
Planning tip: Thundering Athabasca Falls is at its deafening best during the spring snow-melt.
Want to get away from the crowds? Here's where locals go on vacation in Canada
![scenic tours of canada A camper sits near a yellow tent at a campground in a moutainous and wild region](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2022-07/canada-iStock-1357056431-RFC.jpeg?auto=format&q=75&w=1920)
3. Klondike Hwy, Yukon
Best road trip for wilderness Skagway–Dawson City; 708km (440 miles); allow 2 days
Following the same basic route as the 19th-century’s greatest gold rush, this sealed highway starts in Skagway, Alaska , and crosses the Canadian border near the tiny town of Fraser, before passing through Carcross and the world’s smallest desert en route to Whitehorse . Here, you can wise up on territorial history and the nuances of the gold rush at the town’s McBride Museum .
Head north of Whitehorse for unadulterated wilderness. Be sure to stop at the Braeburn Lodge , a rustic roadhouse known for its sweet, soccer-ball-sized cinnamon buns and brusque backcountry service. Blink and you’ll miss the self-sufficient communities of Carmacks, Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing. Plan for a longer stop at Five Finger Rapids, where a wooden staircase leads down to a viewing platform over the choppy Yukon River. The rafts of numerous Klondike prospectors upended on this rough stretch of water.
As you approach Dawson City, mine tailings from century-old dredging operations dot the roadside, alongside gravel piles and small ponds. The town is an understated beauty, filled with authentic gold rush history and the literary ghosts of novelist Jack London and poet Robert Service.
4. Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia
Best road trip for a coastal drive St Ann’s Bay–St Ann’s Bay; 298km (186 miles); allow 1 day
One of the main reasons travelers come to Nova Scotia is to drive the Cabot Trail, the looping, dipping roller-coaster of a road that snakes its way around the northern tip of Cape Breton Island .
Offering epic views of rolling seas and thick forests, and – if you're lucky – the chance to spot a moose, eagle or even a whale, this maritime classic traverses the edge of Cape Breton Highlands National Park . The park is home to the province's grandest scenery, richest wildlife and best hiking trails .
Heading counterclockwise on this circular route, you’ll encounter Ingonish Beach , a long, wide ribbon of sand sheltered in a bay cocooned by gentle hills, and Pleasant Bay, Nova Scotia’s premier whale-watching hub. The Skyline Trail, the Cabot’s hiking highlight, meanders through evergreen forests and along windy cliff-tops to a spectacular ridge.
Other favorite stops include Cheticamp, Nova Scotia's most vibrant and thriving Acadian community, and Baddeck, home to a museum dedicated to former resident Alexander Graham Bell, pioneer of the very handy device known as the telephone.
![scenic tours of canada A sheer rock formation just off the tip of the land where it meets the sea. A couple of houses sit exposed to the elements](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2021-03/perce%20rock.jpg?auto=format&q=75&w=1920)
5. Gaspésie Tour, Québec
Best road trip for French-Canadian culture Sainte-Flavie–Sainte-Flavie; 822km (511 miles); allow 3 days
Towering cliffs, freshly-caught seafood and Québécois sea shanties are all on the itinerary as you circle La Gaspésie , the lofty peninsula contoured by Rte 132 on Québec ’s eastern shores. Easing out of Sainte-Flavie, make time to stop near Pointe-à-la-Croix at the Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site , where a French-British naval clash in 1760 marked the death knell for French colonial ambitions in Canada.
The Parc National de Miguasha has the world's leading cache of ancient fish fossils, with a museum illustrating how prehistoric sea creatures evolved into tetrapods. The crown jewels of the Gaspé Peninsula are Rocher Percé , a huge offshore limestone rock formation with a seemingly gravity-defying archway, and blustery Forillon National Park , where mountains plunge directly into the choppy ocean and rugged cliffs stand sentinel over spouting whales.
Planning tip: After rounding the tip of the peninsula, you’ll head back along the St Lawrence waterway where it’s worth scheduling a lengthy stop in the Parc National de la Gaspésie . A short drive inland from Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, the park is a rough mountainous realm with fine hiking options.
![scenic tours of canada A huge iceberg floats by an island. A gull stands nearby, giving a sense of perspective to the scale of the 'berg](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2024-03/GettyImages-115755706.jpg?auto=format&q=75&w=1920)
6. Viking Trail, Newfoundland
Best road drive for archaeology Deer Lake–St Anthony; 434km (270 miles); allow 1 day
Imagine ancient indigenous burial grounds, 1000-year-old Viking remains, monumental icebergs, breaching whales and an almost supernatural national park whose trippy tablelands are a textbook guide to plate tectonics. Welcome to Newfoundland’s epic Rte 430, which links a patchwork of fog-cloaked coves, snow-capped mountains and stormy fjords.
Starting inauspiciously in the town of Deer Lake, the route plunges into Gros Morne National Park pausing at its waterside hub, Rocky Harbour, a nexus for trails and boat trips with a fun wildlife museum .
Further north lie two important archaeological sites: Port au Choix , a national historic site dedicated to the 5500-year-old burial grounds of three different indigenous groups, and L'Anse aux Meadows , where Leif Erikson and his Viking buddies arrived approximately 1000 years ago – the first known European settlers in the Americas.
Planning tip: The trail ends at St Anthony, a small fishing village with a rough-hewn charm that makes a perfect stop for whale- and iceberg-watching.
![scenic tours of canada Man standing in the water of a lake](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2022-03/Canada%20Lake%20Superior%20Shoreline%20Alexandre%20MOREAU%20GettyImages-114821794%20RFC.jpg?auto=format&q=75&w=1920)
7. Lake Superior Coastline, Ontario
Best road trip for lakes Sault Ste Marie–Thunder Bay; 700km (435 miles); allow 2 days
Even Canada’s most populated province can seem positively remote as you motor along the northern shores of the world’s largest freshwater lake, following a quiet segment of the Trans-Canada Hwy through a necklace of provincial parks.
Pancake Bay Provincial Park hides one of Canada's finest stretches of sugary sand, and if you pull up off-season, you might have it all to yourself. Lake Superior Provincial Park protects a more precipitous coastline punctuated with the exposed rock of the Canadian Shield.
There are indigenous pictographs in the area and fabulous opportunities for stargazing (the park was designated a dark sky preserve in 2018). Similar solitude awaits at Rocky Neys Provincial Park , where Lawren Harris of the Group of Seven came to paint amid craggy beaches and roaming caribou.
Approaching Thunder Bay, you'll pass the jagged Sleeping Giant Peninsula – a series of flat-topped ridges that resemble a large reclining man. The rugged, forested terrain here is characterized by cliffs, hiking trails and plentiful fauna, including moose, wolf and lynx.

The essential guide to visiting Canada
Here’s what you need to know about the world’s second largest country—when to go, where to stay, what to do, and how to get around.
![scenic tours of canada A cityscape lighting up at dusk along a smooth, blue, body of water](https://i.natgeofe.com/n/507dacbe-d3ab-4c81-9e9f-8b7c5f14c6e5/NationalGeographic_1973840.jpg)
Why you should visit Canada
The majesty of Niagara Falls and Banff National Park . Champagne powder at British Columbia ski resorts. Dense forests, teal waters. Polar bears and spirit bears and loons. Poutine in Montreal , lobster rolls in Halifax. The most lakes of any country in the world.
![scenic tours of canada Reflections of rugged mountains and evergreen trees in a mountain lake.](https://i.natgeofe.com/n/443faaab-3d9b-4d6c-b49e-08bd34824df7/NationalGeographic_1758450.jpg)
Best time to visit Canada
Spring: Whale-watch at Clayoquot Sound (pronounced clack-what) as some 20,000 gray whales migrate past the coast, a UNESCO Biosphere Region. A million tulips bloom in Ottawa as part of a spring festival .
Summer: This is prime season for canoeing Ontario’s many lakes, driving the glorious Sea-to-Sky Highway from Vancouver to Whistler, rock-climbing at Squamish, and golfing at a world-renowned seaside course, like Nova Scotia’s Cabot Cliffs or Cabot Links . End of summer sees the stars come out at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Autumn: Polar bears gather in large numbers in Churchill , Manitoba , waiting for ice to form on Hudson Bay so they can hunt seal. For fall colors, take a boat trip up the Saguenay River, in Quebec.
Winter: Dogsled, ice-fish, and snowshoe at the Carnaval de Québec winter festival. Ski or snowboard at any of a score of high, steep, powdery ski resorts that populate the west, including Whistler Blackcomb , Kicking Horse , and Revelstoke , the last being one of the snowiest places on Earth. At Whistler, ride the bobsleigh track featured at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
![scenic tours of canada People on a whale/bird watching trip look to the sky with binoculars.](https://i.natgeofe.com/n/73a6c15b-3ed8-4f53-81f8-3622d88697e7/NationalGeographic_718624.jpg)
Lay of the land
Cities: Mountains and ocean sandwich outdoorsy Vancouver. Lakefront Toronto’s dramatic skyline is interspersed with museums and vibrant ethnic neighborhoods. Sophisticated cobblestoned Montreal is where Canadians go to let their hair down. Colorful houses cling to the rock of St. John’s while icebergs drift offshore. “Any boat ride that has you entering St. John’s Harbour at dusk is a divine experience,” says legendary Newfoundland folk-rock musician Alan Doyle .
West: In British Columbia, get lost among the islands of Haida Gwaii, home to some of the densest, most concentrated coastal temperate rainforest left on Earth. In Desolation Sound, cultural interpreter and bear guide Klemkwateki (Randy) Louie teaches visitors how to weave with cedar bark and to carve miniature canoe paddles. He also takes guests by boat up the Toba Inlet (Yekwamen), among whales, orcas, seals, and sea lions, to the Klite River to watch grizzly bears in their natural habitat. “I’ve been involved in my Coast Salish teachings for 30 years, singing, drumming, dancing, giving visitors some Klahoose history. We’ve handed this down to the younger generation and to our guests to help with building a connection in working together.”
The 47-mile backcountry West Coast Trail (WCT) crosses beaches studded with flowerpot rock formations, and passes through groves of old-growth trees. Down the Vancouver Island coast is the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail , a shorter but more hilly option. “Both trails zigzag through thick coastal rainforest with lots of muddy sections and ladders to help you up and down the steep slopes,” says Taryn Eyton, founder of HappiestOutdoors.ca .
![scenic tours of canada Theforest suspension bridge over Pete Wolfe Creek on the Juan de Fuca trail on the way to Mystic Beach on Vancouver Island.](https://i.natgeofe.com/n/71c42964-47cf-4b14-8dff-90cc3ed4fd57/GettyImages-1296575167.jpg)
North: In the Northwest Territories (NWT), paddle the Nahanni River through Canada’s deepest river canyons, along rapids, and past Virginia Falls, nearly twice the height of Niagara. NWT is also where you can canoe and swim in enormous Great Slave Lake and spot the northern lights , visible here 240 nights per year.
Prairie provinces: Elk Island National Park , in Alberta , is home to bison, elk, and more than 250 bird species. Nearby on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, Métis Crossing features a cultural center, historic exhibits, and dome accommodations with transparent ceilings for night-sky viewing. In early fall, Jasper National Park holds a Dark Sky festival with family-friendly events like night hikes.
Fly in by floatplane to lodges in Saskatchewan or Manitoba for trophy catches of northern pike, walleye, and lake trout. “Since there’s very little fishing pressure, the fish are typically giants, and more than willing to hit just about any lure you show them,” says Patrick Walsh, editor of Outdoor Canada magazine.
Ontario: Charter a boat and cruise the 120 miles from the capital Ottawa down the 19 th- century Rideau Canal (the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America), through a series of lakes, locks, and rivers. Drive west alongside Lake Ontario to Prince Edward County , one of the hottest vacation spots in Canada, known for its wineries, food, hip hotels, and historic small towns like Wellington and Picton. Climb the immense sand dunes of Sandbanks Provincial Park, the largest freshwater barrier beach and dune system in the world. Continuing west along the lake, a new Canadian Canoe Museum opened in Peterborough in May 2024.
Quebec: Montreal comes alive in summer with a series of events, such as the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal . In compact, French-speaking Quebec City, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in a charming town in northern France. Off the beaten path, drive the Gaspé peninsula, encompassing four national parks and iconic offshore limestone formation Percé. Stop in at the International Garden Festival at Grand-Métis, Quebec.
Atlantic Canada: A magical place of mountains and verdant coastline, Gros Morne National Park, in Newfoundland , is one of the few places where you can stroll atop the Earth’s mantle , exposed when two continental plates collided. Visitors can hike to the top of Western Brook Pond fjord for an iconic view , or board a boat . The oldest known European settlement in North America—beating Columbus by centuries—is at L'Anse aux Meadows . Windswept homes of timber, peat, and sod, the Viking site lay undiscovered until 1960.
At the Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Geopark in Nova Scotia marvel at the world’s highest tides in action.
Cape Breton Island is home to one of the world’s great drives, the 185-mile Cabot Trail. A few hardy types bike the steep winding hills. Offshore, visitors whale-watch or fish enormous bluefin tuna.
![scenic tours of canada Flower Pot rocks, Soley Cove, Five Islands area, Nova Scotia, Canada, Cobequid Bay, Bay of Fundy; Ocean tides](https://i.natgeofe.com/n/7db34066-a987-4c57-a424-50fe93fc7726/GettyImages-1280906535.jpg)
Getting around Canada
By plane: Leading carrier Air Canada has more than 900 flights daily. Floatplanes operated by small companies connect remote locations. U.S.-bound passengers can pre-clear U.S. customs and immigration at nine Canadian airports.
B y train: Rail is the time-honored way to see Canada, and operators run specialized services for tourists, like Rocky Mountaineer’s deluxe routes from Vancouver through the Canadian Rockies to Banff or Jasper. Regular train service by Via runs a limited number of routes.
By bus: Intercity bus service has declined across Canada.
By car: A car is essential for moving about within regions of Canada, but some top tourist spots—like Churchill for polar bears—are accessible only by plane or train.
By boat: Bounded by three oceans and with an abundance of lakes and rivers, a cruise or boat trip is a great way to see the country.
Know before you go
Cultural heritage: Native rights and the debts owed by settlers have become front and center in the public discourse, with land acknowledgements , which originated in Canada, now standard practice. Canada’s newest (1999) territory, Nunavut , is governed by the Inuit , and Torngat Mountains National Park , on the northern tip of Labrador, is owned and managed by the Inuit, the first of its kind.
The transcontinental railway helped establish Canada as a nation, but at the same time pushed aside Indigenous peoples and their rights. Blasting through the Canadian Rockies, untold numbers of imported Chinese workers died and were buried by their fellow countrymen, often in unmarked graves.
Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867, but when Great Britain declared war in 1914 Canada automatically joined too as it did not yet control its own foreign affairs. Canada gained legislative independence from Britain in 1931, an official flag of its own only in 1965, and constitutional independence from the U.K. as recently as 1982.
![scenic tours of canada Visitors arrive at Saglek Fjord's North Arm by boat and can fish for Arctic char. This site has been used for thousands of years as a summertime camping ground for the Inuit.](https://i.natgeofe.com/n/05a89ce3-31c8-4493-9b2b-6dfe4fdf2bce/NationalGeographic_2703632.jpg)
Hours: Bars in Canadian cities typically stay open until 2 a.m. Drinking age is 18 or 19, depending on province or territory, while some remote northern communities place restrictions on alcohol use. Marijuana is legal for both recreational and medicinal uses.
LGBTQ+: Canada is consistently ranked the world’s best country for LGBTQ+ rights and safety of travelers. The country legalized same-sex marriage in 2005—at the time only the fourth country in the world to do so. Pride Toronto (June) is one of the largest organized gay pride festivals in the world.
How to visit Canada sustainably
Greenpeace was founded in Canada and today the country ranks a respectable 14 th out of 76 countries on the Green Future Index . Keep your distance from wildlife. Bring your own reusable water bottles, coffee cups, and toiletries. Put all garbage and recyclables into designated bins. Support Indigenous peoples by taking guided walks and visiting Indigenous art galleries.
What to read and watch
Anne of Green Gables , by Lucy Maud Montgomery. This globally loved 1908 children’s book set on Prince Edward Island was adapted most recently into a Netflix series. November 30, 2024, will mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Montgomery.
Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands , by Kate Beaton. This autobiographical comic from Cape Breton’s Kate Beaton recounts her experience as one of the few women working in the rough-and-tumble oil patch of northern Alberta. Beaton’s story also captures the never-ending tale of Canadians from the Atlantic provinces migrating westward for work.
The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America , by Thomas King. This history of Indigenous peoples in North America has been turned into a 2020 documentary .
The Sleeping Car Porter , by Suzette Mayr. The award-winning 2022 novel focuses on a 1920s Black closeted gay Canadian working as a railway porter to save money to attend dental school.
The Hockey Sweater , by Roch Carrier. This 1979 short story about a Quebec boy who receives a hated Toronto Maple Leafs jersey in error has been an enduring favorite of Canadians, managing to capture the importance of both hockey and winter to Canadian children, and also serving as an explainer of relations between English and French Canada.
Schitt’s Creek. The pandemic’s surprise hit series was written by and stars Canadians, and more than anything has a gentle, Canadian-defining vibe to it. If these characters are your people, you’ll feel at home in Canada.
Kim’s Convenience. Written by Ins Choi, this sitcom about a Korean-Canadian family who own a corner store in downtown Toronto captures the intimate feel of the city’s many ethnic neighborhoods, as well as the common multi-generational immigrant experience in one of the world’s most international metropolises.
