safari windows accounts extension

What to Know

 • Go to Settings > Preferences > Extensions and flip the toggle On . Select the extensions and choose Install .
 • To update automatically, go to Settings > Preferences > Extensions and select Install Updates Automatically .
 • Safari extensions use the .safariextz file extension. Be cautious when downloading third-party extensions.

Apple discontinued the development and support of the Safari web browser for Windows in 2012. Edge , Chrome , and Firefox are better and safer choices for browsing on Windows computers. However, Safari for Windows still can be downloaded and installed on Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7. Plus, you can still find some third-party extensions.

Install Safari for Windows

To install Safari for Windows on a Windows computer:

While you can still download a copy of Safari for Windows, its final 2012 version, Safari 5.1.7, isn't supported or recommended for use.

Go to the Softpedia website .

Select the Download tab and then select the mirror site to start the download.

Choose Run to install the browser.

Clear the option to make Safari the default browser.

When the installation is complete, launch Safari for Windows.

Alternatively, download and run the Safari 5.1.7 setup EXE file .

Apple no longer offers extensions for Safari for Windows. Any extensions you find are written by a third party to expand the browser's functionality, personalizing the browsing experience, or adding features not built into Safari's default version.

If you discover any third-party extensions that you trust, here's how to install them in Safari for Windows:

When you install a third-party extension, follow the instructions provided with it. Those instructions may vary from the ones given here.

Select the gear icon at the top of the browser and then select Preferences > Extensions .

Or press Ctrl + , (Control plus comma) to get to Preferences quickly.

In the Extensions tab, toggle extensions to the On position.

Click to download the Safari extension you want to install.

Select the Install button when asked if you're sure that you want to install the extension.

Safari extensions have the .safariextz file extension . Be extremely careful when downloading a third-party extension from the internet.

To disable an extension, go back to the Extensions tab and toggle the extension to the Off position.

How to Make Safari Extensions Update Automatically

Some extensions may offer updates. If an extension you loaded offers updates, set the browser to install updates automatically. Apple no longer updates extensions for Safari for Windows.

Select the Updates button at the bottom of the Extensions tab.

In the center of the screen, select the Install Updates Automatically check box.

Exit the Extensions window. The extension updates on its own when a new version is released.

10 must-have Safari extensions

For most macos users, apple's safari browser is their window to the online world. these add-ons can make the browsing experience even better..

safari 11 mac icon

Among web browsers, Apple’s Safari is no slouch. But it still has bottom-of-the-pack ranking among desktop browsers worldwide – at least in part because of the dominance of Windows. Although it naturally dominates as the default browser on macOS and iOS hardware, Safari is the least popular of all the major desktop browsers , with just 3.9% of the global market share in August. (Safari can be downloaded here .)

Although its feature set may not be on par with Google’s Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Mozilla’s Firefox, Apple continually updates browser to patch security holes and roll out new features. According to Apple, the version included in the forthcoming macOS High Sierra will block ad trackers and stop autoplay videos by default.

While the 15-year-old Safari is packed with features to meet most users’ needs, its capabilities can be enhanced by installing extensions that unlock new options and direct access to third-party services. We studied Apple’s Safari extensions gallery and selected 10 of the most popular and fitting extensions for IT professionals who want to boost the power of Safari for work and at home.

Productivity extensions

Pinterest browser button

The Pinterest browser button is a visual bookmarking tool that helps users save links or images from anywhere around the web. Recipes, travel photos, shopping wish lists and inspirational memes can all be saved, or “pinned,” and categorized in boards that users create in Pinterest. Once installed, the extension can be accessed with a single click at the top of Safari. Users will also see a save button any time they roll over an image. (That setting can be turned off in preferences if it becomes too distracting.)

Pocket is one of the most popular and feature-packed bookmarking tools online. The Pocket extension for Safari extends the capabilities of the cloud-based archive by giving users direct access to save any content on the web that they want to view later. The free Pocket service should be enough for most users and the content they save is automatically synced so it can be retrieved and viewed at any time without the need for an internet connection. Pocket has more than 22 million users who have saved a combined 2 billion items to date, including videos, images, text and other content.

Evernote Web Clipper

The Evernote Web Clipper extension brings one of the most popular web-clipping and note-taking apps in the cloud directly to Safari. Users can clip entire articles to be saved and read later on any device that supports Evernote, and the extension can be used to share annotated images or text directly from the web. Evernote Web Clipper lets users search for related notes in their Evernote account and select specific content by clicking and dragging around the content most important to them. Evernote has an estimated 200 million users.

Grammarly is one of the most popular Safari extensions because it helps users write clearly without making embarrassing grammatical or spelling errors. Users are required to set up an account to install the extension, and the free service includes up to 400 grammar/spelling checks per month. Grammarly goes beyond a typical spell check by detecting missing hyphens, contextual errors and commonly confused words. Grammarly doesn’t work on Google Drive or Google Docs, but it helps many users write mistake-free on Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and almost everywhere else that requires you to write on the web.

Privacy and security extensions

DuckDuckGo is the search engine for users who’ve grown to distrust the business practices of Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engine firms. Safari users can install the DuckDuckGo extension and bring the search engine directly into the browser’s default search field. DuckDuckGo doesn’t track, collect or share users’ personal information or search history and doesn’t follow its users around the web with ads.

Safari users might find that DuckDuckGo is a search engine they can trust and still rely on for relevant results.

LastPass makes password memory recall and tedious password resets a thing of the past. The password manager safely stores user data with AES-256 bit encryption and automatically fills login info on sites around the web. LastPass is available for free and charges $2 per month for premium features like one-to-many sharing, advanced multi-factor options and priority tech support. LastPass can also generate passwords for sites, giving users the freedom and flexibility to maintain a master password for the LastPass service without having to create unique passwords for every site they use.

lastpass

LastPass can safely encrypt and store all of your logins and passwords.

1Password is another popular password vault that can automatically log users into sites, fill out personal information and generate strong passwords. 1Password costs $3 per month for individuals and $5 per month for families with up to five people. The service is more polished and has more features than LastPass, but isn’t currently supported on Windows or Chrome devices. 1Password also allows users to bypass the cloud and store their information locally, and it can generate one-time tokens for sites that require two-step verification.

1password

1Password is a more feature packed password vault, but it’s not as widely supported as LastPass and others.

Adblock Plus

Adblock Plus has a legion of fans and users who herald its ability to block annoying ads from showing up in your browser. The Adblock Plus extension for Safari can also be customized to allow unobtrusive ads, blocking only those that get in the way when surfing. According to the makers of Adblock Plus, the open-source extension is currently active on more than 100 million devices, blocking banner ads, video ads, pop-ups and other junk advertising.

Adblock Plus removes annoying ads of all types and is actively used on more than 100 million devices today.

Shut Up is the kind of tool that would be nice not to need, but the web can be a cruel and hateful place. Shut Up is a free Safari extension that simply blocks all comments from appearing in your browser. Users can toggle the feature off any time they want to step into the darkness and remember how quickly online conversations can devolve. The maker of Shut Up says the extension won’t track or spy on browsing activity, so that comment-free browsing experience won’t come at the expense of user privacy.

shutup

Comments can turn an enjoyable browsing session into a deeply painful and discouraging experience. Shut Up puts an end to that by hiding all comments by default.

Apple's Chrome extension will let Windows 10 users save passwords to iCloud Keychain

liam-tung

The new extension is for people who own an iPhone or iPad but use a Windows 10 PC.

Apple has released a new extension for Chrome that helps Windows 10 users save passwords created in Chrome to Apple's iCloud Keychain password manager.

The new extension is for people who own an iPhone or iPad but use a Windows 10 PC – who most likely use Chrome – instead of a macOS device with Safari.

Forget LastPass: Apple unveils 'Passwords' manager app at WWDC 2024

iCloud Keychain helps Safari users remember usernames and passwords, credit cards, and Wi-Fi passwords created on that browser. That's fine for iPhone owners who also use a Mac and rely on Safari for cross-device password management, but Apple's new extension addresses the population who have an iPhone or iPad but use a Windows 10 PC.

SEE: Top 10 iPad tips (free PDF) (TechRepublic)

"iCloud Passwords is a Chrome extension for Windows users that allows you to use the same strong Safari passwords you create on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac when visiting websites in Chrome on your Windows PC," Apple explains in its Chrome Web Store listing for the iCloud Passwords Chrome extension.

Apple's Chrome extension also saves new passwords created in Chrome to the user's iCloud Keychain, which makes them available to other Apple devices with the same Apple ID account.

The idea of this extension is appealing for iPhone and iPad owners who use Windows 10, but the extension appears to be broken for some users.

Launching the extension in Chrome merely presents six boxes that suggest a two-factor authentication code is required. But users report that nothing can be typed into the boxes.

There aren't many reviews for Apple's extension yet, but all of them report that the extension doesn't work. Some are wondering whether Apple accidentally released a product that's still in development.

Another password management option for iOS users would be to rely on Chrome's built-in password manager for iOS , which lets iOS users autofill passwords saved in Chrome into other apps and browsers. And it works across devices.

SEE: Windows 10 toolbar: Here's how Microsoft is adding news, weather and traffic

As noted by The Verge , Apple accidentally revealed the extension in the update for the iCloud for Windows 10 app. The release notes mentioned "Support for iCloud Passwords Chrome Extension".

This note suggests that Apple's iCloud for Windows 10 app is required for the Chrome extension to work.

Some users are wondering whether Apple accidentally released a product that's still in development.

Web Authn from Microsoft Account on Safari

Safari support Web Authn for a long date. It can be used to login using passkey feature or even FIDO keys, which improves a lot the account security.

However, for some reason, Microsoft doesn't show the option to use FIDO/Passkey when try to open account when I'm using Safari. If I change the user agent to pretend I'm using the Edge, Chrome or any other browser, the option show up and I can use it without any problem.

Why Microsoft is limiting a security feature to Safari users? It works, but that's limited by Microsoft.

Hi VitorGomes N, Thanks for contacting us, I understand that you want to use Web Authn with your Microsoft account on Safari. According to Microsoft, Web Authn is supported for Microsoft accounts on the following browsers: - Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 version 1809 or later - Google Chrome version 67 or later - Mozilla Firefox version 60 or later - Apple Safari version 14 or later However, some users have reported that they are not able to see the option to use Web Authn on Safari, even though they have the latest version of the browser and the operating system. I'm not sure the reason for this, I can only offer suggestions: - Safari may have some restrictions or limitations on the use of Web Authn, such as requiring user gestures, user consent, or user presence. These may affect the availability or functionality of Web Authn on some websites or platforms. - Microsoft may have some technical or policy reasons for not enabling Web Authn on Safari for some users or regions. This may be related to the compatibility, security, or performance of Web Authn on Safari. You can contact Microsoft support or visit their online help page for more assistance or feedback on this issue. - You may need to check or change some settings on your Safari browser or your Microsoft account to enable Web Authn. For example, you may need to allow cookies, enable JavaScript, or disable extensions or add-ons that may interfere with Web Authn. You may also need to update your security info or your sign-in options on your Microsoft account. Let me know if this helps or if you need further assistance. Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It

Plus, why you shouldn't do this

Author avatar

If you use a Mac or an iPhone, it’s hard to pick a different browser over Safari. It’s incredibly fast, uses minimal resources, and respects user privacy. But if you also use a PC, you won’t have the luxury of installing Apple’s flagship browser on Windows since the Cupertino-based tech giant does not develop Safari for the Windows PC. That’s a major issue when your gear consists of cross-platform products.

What you can do is install an older version of Safari on Windows 10 or 11, although we highly advise against that due to compatibility and security-related issues. The best and safest option is to sync your browsing data from Safari to Chrome or Edge on your PC via iCloud for Windows. Setting up macOS on your PC and using Safari that way is another feasible option.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 1

Download and Install Safari on Your Windows PC

Apple halted the development of Safari for Windows in 2012. However, the final version of the browser (Safari v.5.1.7) is freely available on the internet, so you can quickly download and install it on your Windows 10 or 11 PC. The problem? It’s terribly slow and dated, lacks compatibility with most web apps, and poses security risks. You also can’t sync your browsing data, so it’s not a solution if you want to access bookmarks and passwords.

Regardless, the steps below will walk you through downloading and installing Safari on your Windows 10/11 PC. But unless you just want to have a feel of how Safari looked almost a decade earlier, we recommend you stay away from it.

1. Download the Safari installer from a software download portal such as Uptodown , Filehippo , or TechSpot . It weighs in at 36.7MB. Unfortunately, Apple no longer supports Safari for Windows, so you can’t get it from an official source.

2. Double-click the downloaded SafariSetup executable file.

3. Select Next on the Safari Setup’s Welcome screen.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 2

4. Accept the license agreement and select Next .

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 3

5. Specify if you want to add Safari as a desktop shortcut or not. Also, decide if you prefer it as the default browser on your computer (we recommend you don’t select this option). Select Next to continue.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 4

6. Pick an install directory (or leave the default folder path) and select Install .

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 5

7. Wait for the Safari installer to finish installing Safari on your computer. Then, select Finish .

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 6

After installing Safari, you can choose to open it by double-clicking the Safari icon on the desktop. Or, you can open it by selecting Safari on the Start menu’s programs list.

Despite being almost ten years old, Safari for Windows doesn’t look too out of place. To the top, you have the familiar URL bar (you can’t use it to perform searches, however), a Bookmarks strip underneath, and a dedicated Search bar on the left corner. By default, new tabs display frequently visiting sites in thumbnail format—you can use the Top Sites and History tabs to switch them and your browsing history.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 7

Selecting the cog-shaped icon at the right corner of the screen reveals the Safari menu, where you can choose to customize the toolbar, access your browsing history, launch a private browsing window, and so on.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 8

Selecting Preferences opens the Preferences pane, which provides options to modify the homepage, pick a default search engine, adjust privacy settings, manage extensions (although extensions support is non-existent), etc.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 9

What the browser does not allow is to sign in with an Apple ID. That makes it impossible to sync your browsing data from an iPhone or Mac. Even if the functionality were present previously, Apple probably would’ve stopped you from signing in to it by now.

During our Safari tests on Windows, the browser started showing its age. Most websites took a long time to load, while web apps (such as YouTube and Google Maps) simply failed or prompted us to switch to a compatible browser. Other than for basic web browsing, it was practically useless.

Safari for Windows also hasn’t received security updates in almost a decade, so we recommend that you don’t attempt to use it for any sensitive activities such as banking or shopping.

Sync Safari Browsing Data via iCloud for Windows

If your gear consists of a PC and iPhone or Mac, you can sync your passwords and bookmarks from Safari with Google Chrome and vice-versa by installing iCloud for Windows. That’s the most convenient method for accessing your browsing data on each platform.

iCloud for Windows also offers password syncing for Microsoft Edge and bookmarks syncing for Mozilla Firefox. However, only Chrome receives support for both.

If you don’t have iCloud for Windows on your PC, you can get it via the Microsoft Store or the Apple website . If you already have it, make sure to upgrade it to at least version 12.5 or later (you can do that via the Microsoft Store’s Downloads and updates screen or by running the Apple Software Update applet).

With iCloud for Windows up and running, open the iCloud app and check the boxes next to Passwords and Bookmarks . You can also activate additional iCloud services such as Photos and Drive if you want.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 10

Follow that by installing the iCloud Passwords on Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. The former lets you insert and save passwords to the iCloud Keychain. You can also use the iCloud Passwords app (which installs automatically alongside iCloud for Windows) to manage your passwords in Windows. On the other hand, the iCloud Bookmarks extension syncs passwords between Chrome/Firefox and Safari.

Run Safari via a macOS Virtual Machine

If you want to use the most recent version of Safari on your PC (perhaps to test a feature or extension), the only way you can do that is by running macOS via virtualization software. However, the procedure is not convenient. For starters, Mac’s operating system is not natively supported by most VM software, so installation generally relies on workarounds relying on additional software. Also, it requires lots of free disk space and uses up system resources, not to mention that virtual machine guests generally run sluggishly compared to the host operating system.

If you still want to go ahead and install macOS, the easiest way to do that is by following the instructions within this macOS Virtualbox project on GitHub. It lets you install macOS Catalina as a virtual machine via a Bash script. We’ve condensed it into the following steps:

1. Download and install Oracle VM VirtualBox on your PC (it’s free).

2. Download and install Cygwin with the following dependencies (you can select them during installation).

3. Download the macos-guest-virtualbox.sh bash script from GitHub.

4. Open the Cygwin Terminal. Then, drag and drop the bash script and press Enter .

5. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up macOS as a virtual machine on your PC.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 11

After the setup procedure, you can open and use Safari by selecting the Safari icon on the Mac’s Dock. Before you do that, however, it’s a good idea to update macOS and Safari. To do that, open the Apple menu and select System Preferences > Software Update > Update Now .

iCloud for Windows Is the Most Convenient

Although it’s possible to download and install Safari on your Windows 10/11 computer, we recommend you stray away from it. The security risks alone make it impractical, and it’s not like you can use it for any serious web browsing anyway due to compatibility issues.

Since the most likely reason you would want to install Safari involves syncing your passwords and bookmarks, using iCloud for Windows is the only viable alternative. But if you do have the time and just want to try out the latest version of Safari, your best option is to set up macOS as a virtual machine on your PC.

Browser restrictions and configuration when using Conditional Access on your modern workplace

This article is about a subject I covered before in my blogpost titled: “ Understanding and governing reauthentication settings in Azure Active Directory “. The reason I’m doing a more specific article on the subject is because I see a lot of issues when it comes to browser configuration which must be solved if you want to implement Conditional Access and use compliance as a way to grant access the environment.

Even though you are working in the browser on a compliant device, doesn’t necessarily mean that Azure AD can detect that. Therefore you must make sure that your browsers are configured correctly before you implement the Conditional Access policy. For an overview of my recommended set of Conditional Access policies see: Conditional Access demystified: My recommended default set of policies

Some examples I often encounter: End user is working on a compliant device, but cannot download or print files when using the web interface to connect to SharePoint online, this is caused by the App Enforced Restrictions policy being active (see: Limit Access to Outlook Web Access, SharePoint Online and OneDrive using Conditional Access App Enforced Restrictions ). Or, MCAS blocks the download of a file, even though the user is working on a compliant device. (see: Extending Conditional Access to Microsoft Cloud App Security using Conditional Access App Control )

Browser support

This all has to do with browser support and configuration, below is an overview of the requirements and what is, and what’s not supported. Currently Microsoft supports the following browsers :

safari windows accounts extension

Sign-in Logging

When users are using a non-supported configuration, this might reflect as followed in the Azure AD sign-in logging. As you can see the Conditional Access policy requires a compliant device before access to the resource can be given. And in this case, our test user Ferry was working on a compliant device (you have to take my word for it).

Mozilla FireFox

Mozilla Firefox isn’t a supported browser when it comes to Conditional Access. If you configure a conditional access policy enforcing App Enforced Restrictions for example, you will experience these restrictions even when working on a compliant device. Keep in mind that there are also other browsers who use the Mozilla engine, like Tor Browser, Waterfox, and SeaMonkey to name a few. All these browsers will not work in this scenario.

Update October 2021 : Mozilla FireFox is now supported, read the article below for more information

Using Mozilla Firefox as a browser when using Azure AD Conditional Access on your Modern Workplace

Google Chrome

In order for the Google Chrome browser to support the device authentication you must deploy the Windows 10 accounts extension in the Chrome browser to your devices. You’ll need this extension if you want to use the device compliancy within your Conditional Access policies.

Deploying extensions for Google Chrome using Microsoft Endpoint Manager

You can configure the Google Chrome browser running on a Intune/MEM managed Windows 10 device by using a Configuration Profile with a custom profile type.

In order for this to work, we first need to download the Google Chrome Bundle . Within that bundle you can find a folder called ADMX. From that folder you’ll need the chrome.admx file. Within the ADMX file we will use the ExtensionInstallForceList parameter to define the extensions we want to have installed.

safari windows accounts extension

Secondly we must determine the unique identifiers for the extension(s) we want to install. You can determine this by browsing to the chrome web store . From the chrome web store we need the Windows 10 Accounts extension, which at time of writing has the following id:”ppnbnpeolgkicgegkbkbjmhlideopiji” make sure that if you are configuring this yourself to doublecheck whether the id still matches.

safari windows accounts extension

After downloading the ADMX file and figuring out which extensions we want to install by their ID in the chrome web store we can define our Configuration Policy.

First make sure that the custom policy ingests the ADMX file, use the following OMA-URI settings to configure this:

Name: Chrome ADMX Ingestion (can be any name, but make it easy to understand what it does)

Description: <Your description if you prefer>

OMA-URI: ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/ConfigOperations/ADMXInstall/Chrome/Policy/ChromeAdmx

Data type: String

Value: Copy/Paste here the contents of the ADMX file.

safari windows accounts extension

Secondly we can define the setting we want to make as defined in the ingested ADMX file. Be very careful here.

Name: ExtensionInstallForcelist (can be any name, but make it easy to understand what it does)

OMA-URI: ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/Chrome~Policy~googlechrome~Extensions/ExtensionInstallForcelist

Value: <enabled/> <data id=”ExtensionInstallForcelistDesc” value=”1ppnbnpeolgkicgegkbkbjmhlideopiji;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx2bkbeeeffjjeopflfhgeknacdieedcoml;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx”/>

In the example above I also install another extension ( The Microsoft Defender Browser Protection ) as you can see the value must be carefully composed.

First of all, the ExtensionInstallForceList will eventually end up as a REG_MULTISZ registry string. Which means that each entry must be separated by the Unicode character 0xF000 (or  when encoded). You can also see that the URL https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx is being used. That URL is needed in order for the browser to determine the download path once its ready to download the extension. Each extension is also numbered, so the Windows 10 Accounts extension is number 1 and the Microsoft Defender Browser Protection extension is number 2. If you want to add more use 3, 4, etc…

safari windows accounts extension

Once configured assign the policy to a group and you verify whether the necessary extensions are installed within the Google Chrome browser.

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge obviously supports device authentication, but whether this is being used is depending on the profile you are signed into. When you’re signed into a Microsoft Edge profile with enterprise Azure AD credentials, Microsoft Edge allows seamless access to enterprise cloud resources protected using Conditional Access. On a compliant device, the identity accessing the resource should match the identity on the profile. See: Accessing Conditional Access protected resources in Microsoft Edge for more information.

If you want to configure this sign-in for your devices you can use two settings using a Configuration Profile with an Administrative Template.

The first setting we must modify is the “Browser sign-in settings”, make sure that the setting is enabled, and that the option “Force users to sign-in to use the browser” is selected.

safari windows accounts extension

The second setting we must modify is called: “Configure whether a user always has a default profile automatically signed in with their work or school account”. Make sure that this setting is enabled.

safari windows accounts extension

Finish the Configuration Profile and assign it to a group of your choosing.

On a sidenote, installing extensions in Microsoft Edge is much easier, since it’s also part of the Administrative Templates, search for “Control which extensions are installed silently” and just supply the unique id or more in a list.

safari windows accounts extension

Before rolling out Conditional Access make sure that you have configured the browsers on your Modern Workplace to support your Conditional Access scenario’s. Also make sure that you explain to your users which browsers can be used for what scenario. In the end it shouldn’t matter if they use non-standard browsers, as long as they are aware of the consequences.

Hi there, Thanks for a great article this really helped on the Windows side with Chrome installing the extension. Does this apply to Chrome on Mac, as the issue we are seeing on the Macs is Chrome is prompting to choose the certificate from the keychain the first time you go to outlook on the web. I was wondering if there’s a way to auto select the certificate so our users on corp Macs dont have to. Thanks

For anyone struggling with implementation, when copying the sring value for ExtensionInstallForcelist policy, be sure to check if your quotation marks have correct format. ( ” ) is the correct one, but when copying, it will be replaced by ( ” ), which is not correct. I spent 5 hours figuring this out today, so I hope that this will be useful for others.

What ? Micosoft want to control which extensions im using and where i go browsing ? Have they gone mad ? They want completely control user on whole god damn internet ! Isnt that obvious !? I stopping all trackers by my self also i’m stopping almost all ads in chrome also ! Why the f… do i need Microsoft for that ? This isn’t MS glitch this mean war on software user choice to run and internet browsing control. Clearly Google has took some liberty’s way to lash too on user privacy invasion and ad serving enforcement, but those things can be prevented too by user himself. The truth is, that we cant live without MS OS, there is way to many software written to run on it, but we can run MS completely offline (no more enforced screw-ups from MS), for online we can run Linux on which being open source we have all the liberties and full control over OS. Also full control over chrome based browser free to use UBLOCKED extension every time all the time. I don’t like MS telling me how and what or even demanding and/or enforcing it ! Seems to me that Linux is the way to go for internet use and happily running isolated Win offline, u don’t even need active win security. U just create two isolated networks on your router with one shared file folder for “file pass trough” and setup full blown Linux security for online use. U can even switch of “file pass trough” if u don’t need it. U can do also isolated virtual environment with the same effect. Here u go Microsoft go and tamper win/or chrome browser if u can ! Well for Win laptop users there are two options either to obey MS or switch to Linux and there is also MAC ! (have enough of MS shit served from beginning of win).

Are you OK? I have no idea what this “rant” has to do with my article.

Microsoft's Windows 10 Accounts Chrome extension

windows 10 accounts

Windows 10 Accounts is a browser extension by Microsoft for Google Chrome that improves the sign in process in Chrome for supported websites and services.

Google Chrome is the world's most web browser, and the majority of Windows users use Google Chrome and not the Microsoft browser's Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge.

While Microsoft tried to restart the built-in Windows browser with the release of Microsoft Edge, the browser never managed to gain enough traction to threaten Chrome or even the company's own Internet Explorer browser.

That's probably the main reason why Microsoft published Windows 10 Accounts for Chrome and not for Microsoft Edge. Some may interpret this as a lack of confidence in the company's own browser, others that Microsoft wants to reach the largest possible user base.

It needs to be noted that automatic sign ins are available in corporate networks and Microsoft browsers already.

Windows 10 Accounts

Microsoft describes the Window 10 Accounts extension for Chrome in the following way:

Use this extension to sign in to supported websites with accounts on Windows 10. If you have a Microsoft supported identity on Windows 10, you won’t be required to enter your credentials to sign in to supported websites. You’ll need to use this extension if your organization has implemented conditional access policy. Currently, this extension supports Azure Active Directory identities.

The extension works with Azure Active Directory services right now, e.g. Office 365, Exchange Online or OneDrive for Business, and provides Chrome users on Windows 10 with options to sign in to resources automatically when they use Chrome and are signed in to a Microsoft Account on Windows 10.

The user is signed in to all supported services automatically if Chrome is used with the browser extension installed in the browser. This means that it is no longer necessary to enter the account password or user credentials to do so.

The Chrome extension requires the Windows 10 Creators Update. Up until now, automatic sign ins were only possible on corporate networks and Microsoft browsers.

One interesting feature of the extension is that it allows for evaluation of access policies. The extension may be installed forcefully on user devices using policies.

Windows 10 Accounts is not the first Microsoft extension for Chrome. In fact, Microsoft's Active Directory team alone has released three extensions for Chrome. The two other extensions are Access Panel Extension and Sign-In Helper Extension.

The first is required to access specific applications on the Access Panel, the second is a sign-in helper extension for the Access Panel. (via MS Power User )

Thanks. This article answered my question about why I couldn’t delete the extension when you wrote “One interesting feature of the extension is that it allows for evaluation of access policies. The extension may be installed forcefully on user devices using policies.”

Not regarding the contents of the article, I want to commend Ghacks that every article has a picture of the subject, not just a random stock image. The same article on Neowin has a Chrome logo on top of the Windows 10 default wallpaper, what a shame.

Thanks, I really try to get a “real” picture of the program, service, or whatever is described or reviewed in an article.

Google Chrome is the world’s most {missing word} web browser.

Dear Martin Brinkmann Every time i c ur article . and I look for ( Download Links) in the article and find it difficult . thank you

Software download links are always after the article, apps not necessarily. In this case, it is the first link in the first sentence.

I wonder why it needs access to all my websites. Why does it not scope its usage to Microsoft owned domains?

go to chromium.org/administrators/policy-list-3#ExtensionAllowedTypes

That’s not how chrome extensions work. The policy is driven by a content script.

“The extension may be/is installed forcefully on user devices using policies.” “That’s probably/surely the main reason why Microsoft published Windows 10 Accounts for Chrome.”

After reading reviews I just put the two sentences in the right order.

To remove windows 10 account extension from google chrome, I had to go in windows>google folder directory and removed few things using forceful (delete) method by Unlocker program. I also had to remove some chrome extension entries from the registry editor. Also this link may help you ==> https://chromium.org/administrators/policy-list-3#ExtensionAllowedTypes

Microsoft Edge identity support and configuration

 • 5 contributors

Microsoft Edge for Business is now available in Edge stable version 116! Learn more about the new, dedicated work experience with native enterprise grade security, productivity, manageability, and AI built in.

This article describes how Microsoft Edge uses identity to support features such as sync and single sign-on (SSO). Microsoft Edge supports signing in with Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), Microsoft Entra ID, and Microsoft accounts (MSA). Currently, Microsoft Edge only supports Microsoft Entra accounts belonging to the global cloud or the GCC sovereign cloud. We're working on adding support for other sovereign clouds.

This applies to Microsoft Edge version 77 or later.

Browser sign-in and authenticated features

Microsoft Edge supports signing into a browser profile with a Microsoft Entra ID, MSA, or a domain account. The type of account used for sign-in determines which authenticated features are available for the user in Microsoft Edge. The following table summarizes the feature support for each type of account.

How users can sign into Microsoft Edge

Automatic sign-in.

Microsoft Edge uses the OS default account to auto sign into the browser. Depending on how a device is configured, users can get auto signed into Microsoft Edge using one of the following approaches.

 • The device is hybrid/AAD-J: Available on Win10, down-level Windows, and corresponding server versions. The user gets automatically signed in with their Microsoft Entra account.
 • The device is domain joined: Available on Win10, down-level Windows, and corresponding server versions. By default, the user isn't automatically signed in. If you want to automatically sign in users with domain accounts, use the ConfigureOnPremisesAccountAutoSignIn policy. If you want to automatically sign in users with their Microsoft Entra accounts, consider hybrid joining your devices.
 • OS default account is MSA: Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (Version 1709/Build 10.0.16299) and above. This scenario is unlikely on enterprise devices. But, if the OS default account is MSA, Microsoft Edge signs in automatically with the MSA account.

Manual sign-in

If the user doesn't get automatically signed into Microsoft Edge, they can manually sign into Microsoft Edge during the first run experience, browser settings, or by opening the identity flyout.

Managing browser sign-in

If you want to manage browser sign-in, you can use the following policies:

 • Ensure that users always have a work profile on Microsoft Edge. See NonRemovableProfileEnabled
 • Restrict sign-in to a trusted set of accounts. See RestrictSigninToPattern
 • Disable or force browser sign-in. See BrowserSignin

Browser to Web Single Sign-On (SSO)

On some platforms, you can configure Microsoft Edge to automatically sign into websites for your users. This option saves them the trouble of reentering their credentials to access their work websites and increases their productivity.

SSO with Primary Refresh Token (PRT)

Microsoft Edge has native support for PRT-based SSO, and you don't need an extension. On Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and above, if a user is signed into their browser profile, they get SSO with the PRT mechanism to websites that support PRT-based SSO.

A Primary Refresh Token (PRT) is a Microsoft Entra ID key that's used for authentication on Windows 10/11, iOS, and Android devices. It enables single sign-on (SSO) across the applications used on those devices. For more information, see What is a Primary Refresh Token? .

Seamless SSO

Just like PRT SSO, Microsoft Edge has native Seamless SSO support without needing an extension. On Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and above, if a user is signed into their browser profile, they get SSO with the PRT mechanism to websites that support PRT-based SSO.

Seamless Single Sign-On automatically signs users in when they're on corporate devices connected to a corporate network. When enabled, users don't need to type in their passwords to sign in to Microsoft Entra ID. Typically they don't even have to type in their usernames. For more information, see Active Directory Seamless Single Sign-On .

Windows Integrated Authentication (WIA)

Microsoft Edge also supports Windows Integrated Authentication for authentication requests within an organization's internal network for any application that uses a browser for its authentication. This is supported on all versions of Windows 10/11 and down-level Windows. By default, Microsoft Edge uses the intranet zone as an allowlist for WIA. Alternatively, you can customize the list of servers that are enabled for Integrated Authentication by using the AuthServerAllowlist policy. On macOS, this policy is required to enable Integrated Authentication.

To support WIA-based SSO on Microsoft Edge (version 77 and later), you might also have to do some server-side configuration. You'll probably have to configure the Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) property WiaSupportedUserAgents to add support for the new Microsoft Edge user agent string. For instructions on how to do this, see View WIASupportedUserAgent settings and Change WIASupportedUserAgent settings. An example of the Microsoft Edge user agent string on Windows 10 is shown below, and you can learn more about the Microsoft Edge UA string here .

The following example of a UA string is for the latest Dev Channel build when this article was published: "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/80.0.3951.0 Safari/537.36 Edg/80.0.334.2"

For services that require delegating Negotiate credentials, Microsoft Edge supports Constrained Delegation using the AuthNegotiateDelegateAllowlist policy.

Additional authentication concepts

Proactive authentication.

Proactive authentication is an optimization over browser to website SSO that front loads authentication to certain first party websites. This improves address bar performance if the user is using Bing as the search engine. This gives users personalized and Microsoft Search for Business (MSB) search results. It also enables allowing authentication to key services such as the Office New Tab Page.

If you want to configure browser sign in after version 90, use the BrowserSignin policy. For Microsoft Edge version 90 or lower, you can control this service using the ProactiveAuthEnabled policy.

Windows Hello CredUI for NTLM Authentication

When a website tries to sign users in using the NTLM or Negotiate mechanisms and SSO isn't available, we offer users an experience where they can share their OS credentials with the website to satisfy the authentication challenge using Windows Hello Cred UI. This sign-in flow will only appear for users on Windows 10/11 who don't get single-sign-on during an NTLM or Negotiate challenge.

Sign in automatically using saved passwords

If a user saves passwords in Microsoft Edge, they can enable a feature that automatically logs them into websites where they have saved credentials. Users can toggle this feature by navigating to edge://settings/passwords . If you want to configure this ability, you can use the password manager policies.
