Group B Series 2 Automatic Safari Watch

An extension of Autodromo’s successful, inspired Group B collection, the Series 2 Automatic Safari wristwatch incorporates semi-matte green plating that lends a shifting, iridescent finish in various verdant hues. The lightweight, 39mm timepiece features an integrated stainless steel bracelet and sapphire crystal and there’s a Miyota 9015 automatic movement within. This edition draws inspiration from East African Safari rallies and the Paris-Dakar rallies of the 1980s; whereas the entire Group B ranges nods to the rally car era of 1982 to 1986.

Love Goes to Buildings on Fire

Written by music critic Will Hermes, Love Goes to Buildings on Fire: Five Years in New York That Changed Music Forever explores the years in the mid-1970s when NYC was failing as a city, but punk, hip-hop, disco, salsa and jazz were thriving from block to block, borough to borough. Beginning with New Year’s Day in 1973 and ending with New Year’s Eve in 1977, the book is encyclopedic and detailed, and tells the fairytale of various music scenes and the fascinating ways they oftentimes converged in a city that was, in many ways, divided.

Lost Time Print

The brainchild of Alice Murray (Pentagram) and Lauren Priestley (Redwood), the Lost Time print acknowledges and protests the gender pay gap. In the UK—where Murray and Priestley are based—the gap is 17.3% which means women essentially work 63 unpaid days per year. The large-format, limited edition prints depicts these “lost” days, with calendar dates missing to indicate that, until 4 March, women in the UK have been working for free. The B1-size poster is available in an edition of 500, and all proceeds will be donated to non-profits that work toward gender equality within creative industries. There’s also the option to buy one and have another anonymously sent to your CEO. Price is in Pounds.

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead

Written by acclaimed author and activist Olga Tokarczuk and beautifully translated from Polish by Antonia Lloyd-Jones, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead blends a whodunit murder mystery with William Blake’s poetry, astrology, nature, gender and power. The confounding and dazzling tale centers on Janina Duszejko—its 60-something protagonist—and portrays a small, rural Polish town, but expands far beyond; becoming a kind of fairytale about humans and their innate capacity for cruelty. First published in 2009, the book was translated a decade later, the same year Tokarczuk won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

A limited-edition tribute to the traditional Irish pot still style, Kilbeggan’s Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey draws inspiration from recipes used at the historic distillery in the late 1800s. With a mash bill of malted barley, raw barley and 2.5% oats (a nod to Ireland’s oat-growing past), the liquid is only the second to be distilled and matured entirely at Kilbeggan Distillery since its restoration in 2010. From a light spice to an acidic, fruity crispness, the 43% ABV whiskey lingers through its creamy finish.

One of the Most Original Watch Designs Out There Just Keeps Getting Better and Better

Autodromo’s Group B Series 2 just got an all-green makeover in homage to the famed Paris-Dakar rallies of the 1980s.

Autodromo-Safari-gear-patrol-full-lead

By Oren Hartov

Editor’s Note: Watches & Wonders (formerly SIHH) and Baselworld 2020 are canceled but that hasn’t stopped watch brands large and small from debuting their new wares. To stay on top of this year’s best new watch releases, visit our tag page .

Autodromo’s Group B has long been amongst the best and most original “microbrand” watch designs — thoughtful and handsome, it seamlessly melds the worlds of cars, horology and design into a svelte package that looks killer on a fabric strap or on its more recent integrated bracelet .

Now the Group B is being reintroduced in the form of the Series 2 Safari. Inspired by the Safari and Paris-Dakar rallies of the 1980s , the new Group B is finished in dark green with an orange “Safari” logo on the dial. Interestingly, Bradley Price, founder of Autodromo, was able to finish the steel bracelet as well as the titanium/steel watch case in a matching shade of green, making for a uniform, unique look that you’d be hard-pressed to find in the boutique watch world .

With the exception of special green packaging featuring a drawing of the 1986 Paris-Dakar winning Porsche 959 rally car, the Group B Series 2 Safari is the same Group B we know and love, complete with a Miyota 9015 3-hand automatic movement, 39mm case and 50m of water resistance. Most notable, of course, is the watch’s incredible design language: based on the racing tachometer of the Lancia 037 Rally car, the Group B possess a instantly recognizable look that surely makes it one of the coolest watches in the world.

Tuna case and monochromatic designs, for cool urban prospex models..

Seiko Prospex Street Series Urban Safari SRPE29K1 SRPE31K1

When it comes to value for the money and efficient dive watches, Seiko is not an alternative, it’s one of the definitive choices. Mixing accessible prices with superior quality and entirely in-house construction, entry-level Seiko Prospex watches are never a bad choice. And while you can choose to go classic  with a Samurai or a Turtle watch , the brand has recently launched more urban alternatives … No less powerful and capable, but with a design and colours better fitted for the concrete jungle than the depth of the oceans. Let’s take a closer look at the new Seiko Prospex Street Series “Urban Safari” SRPE29K1 & SRPE31K1.

Seiko Prospex Street Series Urban Safari SRPE29K1

Many watches in this price range offer the look and feel of a sports/dive watch but not the performances. Often, accessible sports watches are design statements, without the specifications to make them truly capable. But here, we’re talking about Seiko, a brand that knows a thing or two about dive watches… The new “Urban Safari” watches are certainly less hardcore, less instrument-oriented, less rugged (visually, at least) and they come with a streetwear vibe. The Prospex for the streets, not for the ocean depths… Well, in fact, they are. Even though visually civilized, the new SRPE29K1 & SRPE31K1 are first and foremost diver’s watches from the Prospex collection and, yes, they still perform.

What Seiko has done here is to take one of its most emblematic and most robust design, the 1970s Tuna, and adapt it to a contemporary lifestyle, as a watch that is meant to be worn on a daily basis, with a pair of jeans and cool sneakers, and sized accordingly. But these watches remain Tuna-inspired models, with all the necessary equipment.

Seiko Prospex Street Series Urban Safari SRPE29K1 SRPE31K1

As such, these two watches are downsized editions of the classic Seiko Tuna style, meaning the ultra-protected shrouded case, the uni-directional bezel partially inserted inside this protective shroud, visible assembly screws on the casebands and a crown positioned at 4 o’clock. What changes compared to the more instrument-like Tuna watches is the size. A proper Tuna can easily go up to 48mm in diameter. Here, Seiko went for a 43.2mm diameter. And while this might feels big at first sight, the watches are far more compact than you’d expect and the lug-to-lug dimension is only 44mm – and that’s far smaller than most of the 40mm watches on the market. With a 12.7mm height, somehow classic for an automatic diver’s watch, the result is that the SRPE29K1 and SRPE31K1 are extremely comfortable and versatile, and can easily be worn on a 16cm wrist – Frank, who’s wearing the watches here, has an 18cm wrist. Compact, balanced, comfy!

Seiko Prospex Street Series Urban Safari SRPE29K1

The second aspect that makes these watches more street-friendly is the colour schemes, monochromatic and quite desirable in the flesh. The SRPE31K1, with its mid-grey colour for both the dial, the bezel and the strap, is more the “Urban” side of the collection. the SRPE29K1, with its Khaki beige dial, strap and bezel, is the “Safari” model. Combined with a stainless steel case with dark grey coating, these two models are very appealing and fresh.

Seiko Prospex Street Series Urban Safari SRPE29K1

One of the best aspects of these Seiko Prospex Street Series Urban Safari watches is to be seen on the bezel. Made from the same dark-grey coated steel as the rest of the case, the insert feels special, as made from transparent crystal with a 60-minute scale printed on the internal surface, with a 3D effect. Partially black for the first 20 minutes, with the rest of the scale matching the dial, the insert is, like the dial, filled with Lumibrite so the scale is luminescent in the dark too. For the rest, no surprises, with a dial that is typically Seiko – large luminous applied indexes, oversized hands and day-date display at 3 o’clock.

Seiko Prospex Street Series Urban Safari SRPE31K1

Powering these accessible watches is the Calibre 4R36, a classic movement found in most entry-level diver’s watches. This automatic calibre beats at a 3Hz frequency, can be hand-wound and features a stop-seconds. It features 24 jewels and stores up to 41 hours of power reserve.

Both watches are worn on accordion-style silicone straps with a leather texture and colours matching the dials. They are secured by a steel pin-buckle with the same dark-grey coating as the case.

Seiko Prospex Street Series Urban Safari SRPE31K1

Price and availability

The Seiko Prospex Street Series Urban Safari SRPE29K1 & SRPE31K1 are not limited in production and can now be purchased at retailers and boutiques. The price of each model is EUR 580 .

Ralph Lauren RL67 Safari Chronometer

Back when it debuted in January, we brought you a few photos of the Ralph Lauren RL67 Safari Chronometer live from SIHH 2013. We knew immediately that this was one we were going to have to get our hands on back in the United States, and the pieces are finally arriving on our shores. We spent some time with this relatively budget-friendly chronometer from Ralph Lauren and overall are very impressed.

In case you need some reminding, Ralph Lauren Watches is part of the Richemont group, meaning the brand has access to some fantastic movements that typically elevate these far beyond your typical "fashion watch." Plus you get that distinctive Ralph Lauren aesthetic and good attention to detail when it comes to design.

safari watch automatic

The RL67 Safari Chronometer On The Wrist

And that brings us to the RL67 Safari Chronometer. This watch starts with a rather large 45mm (44.8mm to be precise) aged black stainless steel case similar to the one you may remember seeing with the RL67 Safari Watch last year ( you can read all about that special gunmetal case here ). Inside though is a time-only chronometer movement. It is important to note that this is not a Richemont movement, but rather a "Richemont-modified" automatic movement called the caliber RL300-1. This is the first chronometer certified movement in a Ralph Lauren watch, so while you're not getting something in-house from IWC, Piaget, or Jaeger-LeCoultre, you are getting a COSC certification.

safari watch automatic

A Closer Look At The RL67 Safari Chronometer's Dial

The dial is appropriately sporty for the large, inky black case. There is a deep circular graining that catches tons of light, lending hints of green and khaki to the anthracite base color. And while it shimmers a bit, I wouldn't call the dial shiny or reflective in any way, which keeps things from getting flashy. There is a minutes track printed around the edge of the dial and luminescent printed Arabic numerals as well, including the oversized 12 and 6. This looked a bit strange to me at first, but after a day or two I got used to this and even began to like the little touch.

safari watch automatic

Orange Seconds Hand And Luminous Arabic Numerals

The "Ralph Lauren Chronometer" signature is down by 6 o'clock and is relatively subtle, matching the color of the minutes track and numerals. The simple three-hand layout has luminous hours and minutes hands that recall those on vintage pilot's watches and a straight bright orange seconds hand.

safari watch automatic

Case Detailing And Nicely Shaped Lugs

safari watch automatic

Olive Canvas Strap With Gunmetal Buckle

The details on this watch are really nicely executed. For example, the screw detail is carried from the bezel through to the lugs and this watch also comes on the amazing olive canvas strap that the other RL67 watches have come on (and that we've praised before on HODINKEE). There is no getting around the 45mm size, but between the lug shape and the strap, the Safari Chronometer wears smaller than you might think.

safari watch automatic

The RL67 Safari Chronometer

And the best part is that the RL67 Safari Chronometer comes in at $3,250, placing it on the more affordable end of the spectrum when talking about watches in this class. You get the aesthetic benefits of a Ralph Lauren watch with a Richemont-modified, COSC-certified movement. For what this watch is aiming to be – a well-built, casual, stylish watch for a guy looking for a little horological seriousness – it does a stellar job.

You can find more details on the RL Safari Chronometer here .

Also, don't forget to look back at all our amazing coverage from SIHH 2013 . It makes for great weekend reading.

The maxim that you get what you pay for is a beguiling conceit. In one stroke it denigrates inexpensive items as naturally inferior while extolling the belief that expensive goods are inherently of a higher quality.

But we know this is not always the case. Sometimes there is no genuine luxury contender (see smartphones). Sometimes a simpler, less overengineered option can be better ( Henry hoover versus a Dyson , or, for that matter, any human-powered vacuum over a robot one ). And sometimes scrappy smaller brands compete by offering surprisingly high-caliber products while undercutting respected global players. This, fortunately, has been happening in the watch world for some time now—yes, even with proper automatic movements.

Below is a selection of semi-affordable watches, all fully automatic, and all for less than $1,000 (and one for less than $100). All laudably punch well above their weight. And all should serve you well, from diving to fine dining, for decades to come.

Proper automatic movements, you say? What are those? Good question. An automatic watch, confusingly also known as a "self-winding" watch, is a mechanical watch where the natural motion of the wearer—you—moving their arm about (picking up a coffee, waving hello, or just walking around) provides all the energy needed to wind the mainspring (this is the watch's power source, a spiral torsion spring, but think of it like your phone's battery). This means if you wear the watch regularly you never have to wind. It just keeps going. How long it keeps going after you stop wearing it is called the power reserve (similar to when your phone is left on standby). Hand-wound watches can't do this, you have to remember to wind them at regular intervals. We explain more about types of watches at the end of this article.

A Lovely Diving Watch

Rotate North CEO Damien Cranney says that the reason he set up this Irish adventure watch brand in 2019 was “to develop a range of elegantly designed tool watches at an affordable price that were fit for purpose.” Having tried the German-engineered Atlantic diver, we can attest to its quality, with a solid screw-down crown (a feature that helps enormously with water resistance), toothed bezel, hardened mineral crystal (more expensive and more scratch-resistant than plastic or acrylic), and glow-in-the-dark Super-LumiNova hands and hour markers. The Seiko shock-proof movement supplies 41 hours of power reserve, and the piece is good for depths down to 300 meters (just shy of 1,000 feet).

Plus, the sustainably sourced vegan rubber straps arrive with half-punched holes, so you simply pick the notch that fits your wrist and leave the rest unbroken. Some brands selling at 10 times the price have not been as inventive. The new Seal Black edition comes with those rubber straps or a stealthy NATO strap . Rotate North also has a more serious 500m diver watch complete with a helium valve. Either variant represents excellent value. The clincher? Right now the brand is offering free express worldwide shipping.

Most Affordable

Seiko has considerable dive watch heritage. This is, after all, the only watch brand that has an association with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, established in 2016. If you are looking for a watch with a little more versatility, Seiko's 5 Sports range, all powered by an automatic movement, come in at preposterously low prices for what they offer.

Seiko has produced its 5 Sports watches in various guises for more than 50 years, but the latest collection has something for everyone—27 iterations, each in one of five styles: Sports, Suits, Specialist, Street, and Sense. You can see them all here .

The collection also has a range of straps and bracelets from steel mesh to silicone-leather hybrids. This classic Sports model has a 41-hour power reserve, silicone strap, and 100-meter water resistance.

A Masterful Modern Watch

Unimatic makes achingly stylish yet modern watches at ludicrously low prices, considering what you get. This is hardly surprising when you consider the Milan-based brand was founded by a pair of industrial designers in 2015. The 400 euro ($463) UC2 has a minimal brushed 316 solid stainless steel case that's waterproof to 300 meters (about 1,000 feet) and an anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Sapphire is better than plastic or even mineral glass for toughness, so no need to worry about scratches if you bang the UC2 against a wall or ticket barrier.

The black matte dial is finished with glow-in-the-dark, pale-green Super-LumiNova hour markers, while the automatic movement is good for a respectable 41-hour power reserve. The black nylon, two-piece strap finishes the package nicely. In a final flourish, at this price, amazingly, you also get the watch delivered in a Unimatic tough case.

A Military Look

The Hamilton Khaki Field is no stranger to lists of value watches, and rightly so. The military look is very much in style in the horology world (not that it ever really is out of fashion), but now the brand has brought in lightweight titanium options. This 42mm piece with a stealthy coating of black PVD (a process in which a solid material is vaporized in a heated vacuum then bound to a surface) houses the automatic movement, which offers an impressive 80-hour power reserve. The simple, clear dial will never look dated, while the tough canvas strap and 100-meter water resistance make this a watch that can serve for sports and evening occasions.

Looking for something less Bruce Wayne in demeanor? Try Hamilton's new Far Cry 6 collaboration with Ubisoft. Identical to the in-game watch, this piece, also in titanium, has a stylized 6 , red second hand, an additional leather strap, a strap-changing tool, and a leather carrying case. But take note: It's a limited edition run. Only 1,983 will be made.

Farer Pembroke watch

A Stainless Steel Wonder

Farer, a British brand, sells exceptional automatics under $1,000. Its 38.5mm Pembroke field watch with a 200-meter depth rating is made from marine-grade stainless steel (which has higher levels of chromium and molybdenum, so it's tougher and has greater corrosive resistance). Inside is a robust Sellita automatic movement with a 38-hour power reserve and built-in shock system.

This timepiece also comes with three quality straps: a marine-blue American Horween leather strap; a green waterproof NATO strap (NATOs are one-piece straps, originally made for the military, that are lightweight, quick-drying, durable, and simple to use); and an integrated “5 row” 316 marine-grade steel bracelet—all with quick-release fitting systems. Many high-end brands would not be so generous.

Sea Gull 9mm Thin Women's Automatic watch

We're not sure there is much need for the separation of watches into “men’s” and “women’s” categories. After all, if you like diving, a dive watch is the right choice for you. What makes this 38mm watch stand out is not that the manufacturer calls it a “women's” piece but that it's only 9mm thick yet still manages to be fully automatic. Sapphire crystal? Check. Water resistance? Check (to 100 feet). Leather strap? Check again. Then consider the price. This costs just $200. Then consider the sale price. Right now it's only $99.

Chinese brand Sea-Gull, a public company based in Tianjin, reportedly turns out 5.2 million mechanical movements a year, making it easily the world’s largest manufacturer. It also made the original and much-copied Seagull 1963 pilot’s chronograph, so don't let the low price fool you into thinking it's a brand to ignore.

Smooth and Battery-Free

Tech has, much like everywhere else, massively impacted the watch world. The arrival of quartz technology in the 1970s and early 1980s at the time largely replaced mechanical watches.

Mechanical: The items on this list are mechanical and fully automatic, so your wrist movements recharge them (no winding), and they have smooth hand movements. Generally, mechanical watches are designed to last lifetimes, if cared for properly. With an automatic, you're also paying for craftsmanship. This is unfortunately why “proper” watches cost so much. For example, an entry-level Rolex Submariner will set you back more than $8,000.

Quartz Watches: A quartz watch uses a battery to send an electrical current through a small quartz crystal, which electrifies it and makes it vibrate. Those vibrations keep the movement oscillating and power the motor that moves the watch hands. Quartz timepieces are more accurate than mechanical ones and are much cheaper.

But there is a trade-off. Unlike the smooth sweeping motion of a mechanical movement, the second hand of a quartz watch moves in jerking individual ticks. Also, that battery will need changing every year or two. Additionally, quartz watches are mostly mass-manufactured with the cheapest possible parts.

Boldr Safari GMT Hands-On Watch Review

Boldr Safari GMT

Boldr Safari GMT

Since the Miyota 9075 and the Seiko NH34 movements were unveiled, the latest microbrand trend has been GMT watches. Boldr has released quite a few GMT watches in the past, like their Globetrotter series, but those were much more expensive, and also much larger watches. The 9075, which is referred to as a “true” GMT has been quite popular, and is also a way for brands to offer this style of movement at a much lower price than what Rolex offers. But even more affordable are watches using the Seiko NH34, and that is what is in the Boldr Safari GMT I have in hand for review. This new model from the Singaporean microbrand uses a new 40mm case, comes in 3 different color combos and is pretty affordable at $469. The Tarangire model that I have here does have a Rolex Explorer vibe but still has that distinct style and aesthetic Boldr is known for.

Specifications:.

  • 40mm Stainless Steel Blasted Case
  • Lug to Lug 48mm
  • Thickness 12.5mm
  • Lug Width 20mm
  • Weight 151 Grams Unsized
  • California Dial
  • Japan LumiNova
  • Sapphire Crystal
  • Seiko NH34 GMT Movement
  • 200m Water Resistant
  • Blasted Stainless Steel Bracelet
  • Country of Manufacture- China (Hong Kong)

https://www.boldrsupply.co/collections/safari/products/gmt-tarangire

So yes, gmt watches are all the rage right now in the microbrand world, and that makes sense seeing how microbrands rely on readily available movements, and when new ones hit the market, it only makes sense that they incorporate them into their lineup. the boldr safari gmt uses the seiko nh34 gmt movement, which is what is referred to as a callers gmt, so if you ever used an eta 2893-2 or sellita sw-330, it operates pretty much the same, though don’t expect it to have the same accuracy or smoothness of the aforementioned movements. much like the nh35, this is an affordable movement and is very much a base movement as well, but like all the others, is considered a workhorse movement, meaning it does not do everything great, but should keep working for many years..

Boldr Safari GMT

As I mentioned earlier, there are 3 versions/colors of this Boldr Safari GMT, but actually, this new Safari model has a few variations in the lineup itself. This is the GMT model, but there is also a dive version and a field-style watch as well, all utilizing this new case from Boldr. If you do not care for this Tarangire version with the Explorer vibes, the other 2 models (blue or green) have color-matched bezels, so you can have something that looks less like a famous model from a big brand. I chose this model specifically because of the look though, as I just love the Explorer II, but I also liked how this was not a direct copy. The case is very different in shape and the entire case and bracelet is bead blasted, giving it that rugged look and feel. The knurled screw-down crown allows for a great grip and adds to that ruggedness and this is a beautiful case design from Boldr, with the flared case sides and semi-hooded lugs.

Boldr Safari GMT

The aluminum bezel insert, dial color, and orange accents are obviously what gives off the Explorer look here, but the Bolder Safari GMT Tarangire has a few details that keep it from being your standard clone. First, check out the numerals. This is a California dial, a dial not normally seen on this style of watch. On paper, it doesn’t sound like it would be a good fit, especially with the contrasting Arabic numerals on the bezel, but somehow it pulls it off and makes it somewhat unique. Then of course you have the broadsword hour and minute hand, which are nothing new or original but still different than the standard Mercedes hands used by Rolex. The dial is a little less cluttered as well, and one thing that I am not fond of here is the use of a date movement but a no-date dial. If the movement has a date, then you should go ahead and put it on the dial. Furthermore, I have seen a few complaints of lack of functionality of a GMT watch without a date on the dial.

safari watch automatic

The no date on the dial does not bother me as I have talked about in the past, I don’t really use the GMT complication, but on certain watches, I have just always liked the look. Now, this may seem crazy to some watch enthusiasts, but dive watches are the most popular style of watch sold, and I am willing to be over 90% of those buyers have never gone diving in their life. The no-date keeps the dial cleaner and I have grown to appreciate a dial without one, but I can see how this can be an issue for some. All that said, this is an easy-to-use GMT watch, and all you do is move the crown out to the first position move and set the GMT hand.

safari watch automatic

If you are someone like me who is not a big fan of high polish or reflective cases, well this Boldr Safari GMT will probably appeal to you, because there is not one part of the case or bracelet that is not bead blasted. Even that aluminum bezel insert has the same finish. For me, I love the looks, especially considering this is meant to be a watch to wear while on Safari, hiking, camping, or of course traveling, and not only will the finish keep down reflections, but it should also take a beating while still looking pretty good as this finish tends to hide scratches unless it really gets some major road rash. The case is smooth to the touch and the grey looks contrasts nicely with the stark white dial and just give it the tool-ish look and feel, a look I am very fond of.

safari watch automatic

Something I am not overly fond of though is the case back, or more specifically the cartoon etching of an animal on the sapphire window of the case back. When I first received this Boldr Safari GMT, I really had to look closely to try and figure out what this “Art” was on the crystal. Reading the Boldr Website , I realized this is an animal, one of four that are randomly selected and printed on the glass. Reading further, these are animals one would encounter in Tarangire National Park Safari tours, and I flipped the watch around and realized it was a Zebra. Now you may be sitting here thinking, are you dumb, how can you not tell? Well, I just told you what it was, but with how it was a transparent print, and looking at it upside down, I had no clue. Once I figured it out, I still didn’t care for it. Not only is it hard to tell what it is, and just looks like something you would find on the back of a $100 Swatch watch, but it also obstructs one’s view of the movement. While I have always maintained I don’t care for exhibition case backs for plain and mundane movements, if you are going to do a clear case back, make sure one can see the movement then.

safari watch automatic

When it comes to fit, the Boldr Safari GMT is 40mm, and with a short lug-to-lug of 48mm, it is going to be comfortable on a lot of wrists. 40mm is usually the smallest I will go these days for watches, but I never rule anything out because I have learned that the written specifications do not always tell the whole story. Some watches just wear larger and others smaller, and that is due to many different factors. I would say this Safari wears exactly like I expected, a 40mm case, and as such, I found it to look good on my 7 1/2 inch (19.05cm) wrist, and it is very comfortable as well. One thing to note, the male end links do make the overall length a little larger, more like 50mm in overall length, so look at my wrist and see where it covers to determine if it would be wearable on your wrist.

Boldr Safari GMT

The bracelet is a Y or U-link-style bracelet, which is also a nice change from the standard oyster-style link they could have used. The links are held together with friction pins, not screws, so keep that in mind for those of you who are not adept at sizing this style of bracelet that you may want to bring it to a jeweler to do so. I find it easy to size though, and 3 links out is a perfect fit for my wrist size. The clasp, with its little safari adventure trail design, is pretty standard fare though, but very functional, so no complaints here.

safari watch automatic

Boldr Safair GMT lume

Boldr has always impressed me, especially with its more rugged design elements and the array of models you can choose from, both affordable and very affordable, such as this Boldr Safari GMT. I personally love the looks and design of this one but know it may be too close to the Rolex, so check out the others on their website, or if GMT watches do not interest you, give a look at the other Safari models. With the exception of whatever they were thinking with that case back design, I think all around this is a great piece, and a nice budget GMT watch, that doesn’t look budget. Even the lume is fantastic, just check the photo above. I do wonder why they did not do a black dial version of this Tarangire though, as I think I would have liked that one even more, but who knows what they have in plan for the future. You can see all of the Boldr Safari models HERE.

Another GMT without a date. Ya, I get the aesthetic appeal, but the utility goes from good to marginal for anyone that wants to utilize the GMT functionality across timezones and days.

I do agree. The more I thought about it, the more it doesn’t make sense to have a GMT function without the date.

Customer Reviews

Love the look of the Open Water Daybreak. And am blown away by excellent customer service! This is my first automatic and diver, and Chris and Kaine have been patient with, a very responsive to, my silly questions. My bracelet was too big - purely my incompetence at measurement - and they are sending me a new one! Vero has acquired a repeat customer. I think i will go for the Meridian next.

I have been wearing my Vero Open Water Broadway LE about 75% of the time since receiving it a week ago. The look and feel of this watch are exactly what I was looking for. The thing that impresses me the most, however, is the accuracy. I have had this same movement in other watches costing several times as much and they were nowhere near as accurate. Hats off to whoever regulated these watches. After one week mine is a total of 5 seconds fast.

Local Portlander here…also an avid watch enthusiast. The Broadway LE is a matte monster tool watch. Depth tested, adjusted, not just factory regulated, and it feels like a tool you could use, not just a pretty face trying too hard. If you’re looking for domestic assembly and real quality (10-year, no questions asked warranty), Vero is your US domestic tool brand. Sinn should watch out!

Watch Review: The Automatic Citizen “Tsuyosa” Small Second

safari watch automatic

At this time “Tsuyosa” (meaning “strength” in Japanese) is Citizen’s collection of affordable, albeit refined, mechanical daily-wear dress watches. The Citizen Tsuyosa watch family currently consists of two main model families, including the central second Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic watches , as well as the very similar Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second watch that I review here today. These watches all share the same 40mm-wide case and bracelet/strap options but are different in terms of the dials and movement.

Priced a bit higher than the standard central second automatic versions, the Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second watches feature a textured dial with a guilloche-style design, as well as an automatic movement with a subsidiary seconds dial placed above the 6 o’clock hour indicator. These changes give the Tsuyosa Small Second a slightly more decorative and retro feel, adding a bit more formality and grace to an otherwise very versatile dressier watch collection (made modern and fun with the availability of some truly spirited dial color options). This particular version with the khaki green is reference NK5010-51X, though the watch is also available in blue (NK5010-51L) and gray (NK5010-01H; sold on a leather strap).

safari watch automatic

For the money, there is a lot of watch here to enjoy. Citizen has an assortment of much more expensive mechanical watches, but what makes the Tsuyosa special is the focus on affordability for a customer who isn’t going to be able to spend over $1,000 on a wristwatch. Accordingly. most Citizen Tsuyosa watches have a “street price” of under $400 USD, making them very attractive to people wanting a classic mechanical watch of this style who don’t want to pay serious luxury dollars.

The Tsuyosa case is 40mm wide in polished steel and water-resistant to 50 meters. The case is about 12mm thick, and the dial has a flat sapphire crystal over it. The case isn’t too long, 45mm long when measured lug-to-lug. That said, with the case thickness and broad lugs, this watch wears large despite the proportions. The case is designed for the bracelet or strap to have a quick-release feature. This is useful, but you will have to purchase special straps to fit this and other compatible Tsuyosa cases. Speaking of the steel bracelet: It is nice, but my one qualm about it is the lack of enough tapering links (there is a bit of taper right next to where the bracelet connects with the case). However, this would have increased the price of the watch, since it means just that many more part types that need to be produced. The mostly 20mm-wide bracelet feels a bit chunky when compared to the dimensions of the case. To keep the case elegant and the crown out of the way, Citizen designed the Tsuyosa case to have a smaller crown positioned at the 4 o’clock position on the case, reminiscent of the 1970s and 1980s watches this overall style is suggestive of.

safari watch automatic

This is probably my biggest compliment to the Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second: It very much feels like a positive emulation of Japanese dress watches from a few decades ago, only produced and styled for today’s generation of watch lovers. Mixing distinct homages to European luxury watches with Japanese construction quality and value, the Citizen Tsuyosa automatic watches deliver a trendy look in a serious package that enthusiasts can easily stand by as a “good deal.”

The appeal for many people in this particular Tsuyosa Small Second product family will be not so much the movement but the textured dial design with the subsidiary seconds dial. While this is not an authentic hand-operated rose engine guilloché dial (a high-end artisanal element available in more expensive luxury watches), the stamped guilloché-style dial on the Tsuyosa Small Second is nicely done and well-colored. The overall design of the dial is not only classy but also legible with lume-painted applied hour markers and hands. Let me also acknowledge the welcome design restraint at play by Citizen in keeping the dial functional and minimalistic without any unwanted text.

safari watch automatic

You can admire the in-house mechanical movement through the window on the rear of the watch case. This is Citizen’s caliber 8322, which is an interesting and still uncommon movement from Citizen. Based on the budget-friendly 8000 series mechanical movement family, it is going to be a bit more basic and operate at 3Hz. But Citizen has put more effort into decorating the movement and bolstering its performance. The “rear view” of this Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second is decidedly prettier than the movement view on the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic. More so, the caliber 8322 has 60 hours of power reserve. In a way, this is Citizen’s answer to the Swatch Group’s [slightly more expensive] Powermatic 80 family of mechanical automatic movements.

Most of Citizen’s watches with the more expensive 9000 series-based movements cost at least double the price (such as the Citizen Series 8 model family) of your average Tsuyosa timepiece. Citizen is specifically trying to enter the market at an affordable price point with the Tsuyosa watches, while offering value and fun, but also providing reasons for enthusiasts to look even higher at the more elite watches produced by the brand. A few years ago, I mentioned that mechanical watches were going to be a serious part of Citizen’s strategy moving forward (in addition to popular products such as its quartz Eco-Drive movement technology), and that has been proving true. Few major watch brands out there can offer this much mechanical dress watch for such a good price.

safari watch automatic

Refinement quirks aside (such as the thicker and wider bracelet), the Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second is a very competent and handsome timepiece. It is ideal for those who want a contemporary retro-style mechanical dress or smart-looking, daily-wear timepiece for just a few hundred dollars. Watches like this also tend to be more on the timeless side and will continue to be wearable and relevant years from now. What will be difficult for consumers to decide is which version to get. With multiple colors and movements now available, searching through the existing Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second and Automatic watches allows fans to find something that neatly suits their tastes and personalities. Price for the Citizen “Tsuyosa” Small Second NK5010 is $550 USD for the gray model on leather, with the two models on steel bracelets priced at $595 USD . Learn more at the Citizen website .

Apple makes it very easy to clear your browsing history on both the iPhone and iPad and we're here to show you how. Here's how you can make a fresh start in Safari and debloat your web browsing experience.

On the latest models, web browsing is smoother than ever before thanks to ProMotion in the iPhone 15 Pro and faster chipsets like the M2 found in the iPad Air 6 . If you're looking for a new Apple device, we highly recommend one of the following:

iPhone 15 Pro $999 at Apple

iPhone 15 Pro $999 at Apple

Grab the best iPhone available right now starting from $999. With a gorgeous titanium finish and the most powerful chip ever in an iPhone, you won't be disappointed with the 15 Pro.

iPad Air 6 13-inch |$799$754 at Amazon

iPad Air 6 13-inch | $799 $754 at Amazon

With an M2 chip and a 13-inch screen option, the new iPad Air 6 is one of the best iPads available right now. Normally $799, you can pick up the 13-inch model for nearly $50 off at the moment — don't miss out.

Viewing your web history in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is very easy to do, here's how:

  • In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button in the toolbar that's below the address bar.
  • Tap the History icon in the upper right corner. Here, you can view your entire web history.

To search for bookmarks, tap the Bookmarks button in the toolbar at the bottom of the app, then select the Bookmark icon.

  • Use the History search bar to find previously viewed pages.

To find History, tap the History menu. Then use the search to find previously viewed information.

If the time calls to wipe most or all of your web browsing history in Safari, here's how to do it on both iPhone and iPad.

To note, the below steps will be the same if you attempt to wipe your web browsing history on an iPhone 15 Pro Max or an iPad Mini 6 , all Apple devices require the same steps.

Master your iPhone in minutes

iMore offers spot-on advice and guidance from our team of experts, with decades of Apple device experience to lean on. Learn more with iMore!

  • In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button.
  • Select the History icon in the upper right corner.
  • Tap Clear and select how much history you'd like to clear: the last hour, the last day, 48 hours' worth, or all recorded history.

Safari iOS 17 Clear web history

One more thing… A feature no one talks about

Privacy on the web matters more than ever in these modern times. Websites store the pages you click on, especially when you sign into a page that can contain personal information about you.

It's great to have a feature like this in Safari — but it would be good to have this automated in iOS 18 . If Apple's web browser could automatically clear history after 24 hours it would be very useful, as you wouldn't leave a trail behind.

Regardless, it's still a good feature, and one you should use every week.

Swimming pool in Tata Safari: YouTube influencer in trouble after viral video

  • The man shot a video of setting up a swimming pool inside his Tata Safari SUV and was seen enjoying a splash with his friends.

Tata Safari swimming pool

A YouTube influencer from Kerala found himself in troubled waters after setting up a temporary swimming pool inside his Tata Safari SUV. The influencer, known as Sanju Techy on YouTube, shared the video of him and his friends enjoying a splash inside the SUV amid rising temperature along with a child. The video went viral on social media which led to the Motor Vehicle Department to take note and act against him. The registration of the Tata Safari has been suspended and Sanju has been booked under several sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The viral video shows how Sanju Techy used a blue tarpaulin sheet to set up a swimming pool inside the Tata Safari. According to reports, they were influenced by a recent Malayalam movie which also had such stunts. The influencer folded the rear two rows of the SUV to make space for the pool. The sheet was then filled with water to create a small pool inside the vehicle. The influencer and his friends were seen enjoying pool-time while sipping coconut water inside the moving Safari SUV. Sanju and his friends stopped the Safari SUV later to drain the water. This led to a massive traffic snarl as they blocked the road. The video garnered more than thousand views within a very short span of time.

A senior official from the Motor Vehicle Department said, “They released the water from the vehicle onto the road in a dangerous manner, creating serious safety threat to other vehicle users in the road." On Wednesday (May 29),Sanju was asked to appear before the Enforcement Road Transport Officer. The transport department also suspended the registration certificate of the Safari SUV and suspended the driving licence of the person who was behind the wheels during the stunt.

New ipod-like device turns a strapless apple watch into a click-wheel ‘phone’.

Avatar for Ryan Christoffel

Apple’s most successful product of all time, the iPhone, was at one point going to look a lot more like an iPod than the device we ended up getting. The iPod was such a hit for Apple that the company naturally explored making an iPhone that looked and felt similar to its then-biggest moneymaker.

17 years after the iPhone’s launch, that idea of an iPod-inspired phone has not been forgotten. In fact, there’s a company teasing that it has created one…kind of.

Say hello to the tinyPod .

The tinyPod is not what you think

The tinyPod won’t be fully unveiled until some time in June, but it has been teased on X/Twitter for several months already. A new teaser video today has provided the best look at the device yet.

This summer. Live different pic.twitter.com/7qvu5Sm3Xv — 𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆𝖯𝗈𝖽 (@thetinypod) May 24, 2024

Based on the name, I would have guessed that tinyPod was going to be a music-only device, but as the video shows, it will in fact be more capable than that.

Why is it more capable? Because it’s actually an enclosure for a strapless Apple Watch .

tinyPod is essentially a case for the core Apple Watch hardware that takes inspiration from the iPod to turn your Watch into something of a tiny phone. Oh, and instead of using your Digital Crown to navigate watchOS, you’ll use the included iPod-like click wheel.

Is it brilliant? Is it bizarre? Maybe a bit of both.

The iPod phone is actually an Apple Watch

tinyPod is definitely marketing itself as more than a case. The teaser ends with the clever tag line:

your phone away from phone

At a time when so many users struggle with phone addiction, the idea of taking an Apple Watch and turning it into a less-addictive ‘phone’ is a fascinating one.

With tinyPod, your ‘phone’ will still be part of the Apple ecosystem, with all the essential apps that come along with it—because it’s an Apple Watch. But it will also be much easier to not spend every waking minute browsing social media apps and YouTube, since most of those services don’t exist or function well on watchOS.

Count me intrigued. If it works well, I could see the tinyPod being an elegant solution to the need some people feel for a less capable phone in their life. In any case, it certainly looks adorable.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

safari watch automatic

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

safari watch automatic

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

safari watch automatic

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

safari watch automatic

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

safari watch automatic

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

safari watch automatic

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

safari watch automatic

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
